Beanie level: Rooftop room dweller

OMG fellow puppy fans,

What is What’s Wrong With My Mother-in-Law going to do now???

Option 1) Twin brother also gets killed by a gang
Option 2) Twin brother goes to study abroad once he’s fulfilled the mission in a month’s time
Option 3) Twin brother gets killed by the mother-in-law as she realises he’s not the twin brother, but the original brother pretending to be his own twin, who wasn’t killed by a gang at all

Other makjang suggestions welcome. We can send them to the morning drama director, who seems to be open to fan input.

@ToD will take up the job, but as he/she approaches our puppy, he/she will be stunned by the cheekbones and will lose control of the steering wheel and frantically try to steer the wheel and then the brakes fail and then all hell ‘brakes’ loose and hits a near by trash can and no one dies. Our puppy runs to save the driver and sees that it is the mother-in-law!! cue-music..

In my defense, I did say I am not watching this drama. Therefore, I did not know that the aforementioned twins were the adorable puppy/oppa that has plastered the fanwall lately.

I take it back. I remove the thought from the universe. And I”M SORRY. Please don’t hire a black masked assassin to get your revenge on my me @cloggie, @greenfields, @mayhemf, @oppafangirl,

Option 4 – Twin Brother gets struck by Truck of Doom. He was trying to save a puppy but didnt move out of the way , even though there were plenty of time. He survived but had anemesia. He finally came back, thinking he is the original brother, thinking the newborn baby is his (= original brother’s baby). But of course, the baby isn’t his (who is the real father?!).

      this…
the lack of TOD is sending me over the edge really~
But I didn’t want him to survived tho?
Imagine the close-up slow-mo when his lifeless body flying over the hood
His pained expression and then eerie calmness juuussstt before his body falls on that road
As if the world understands, rains start to drizzle down like tears as he took his last breath…

demmit…I’m too invested in this drama~

I’m imagining it being a 120 ep daily drama, which has issues when the ML goes into the army.

But I had the non-death Option 2 as a possibility. Or maybe WWWMMIL should just finish early like Let’s Eat 3

He has to go in the Army, so follow him in. Talk the Army into letting the drama show the softer makjang side of army life entwined with the plot of WWWMMIL. A hybrid reality and makjang show could set a new trend! Get out of the box, do something different!

Wow so many badass female characters on my screen these days. I’m loving Han Ye-Seul in #Big Issue – she’s beautiful, super-smart and grown-up. Oh and morally quite deeply charcoal grey.

6
7

I think I was one of 12 people that watched this show live. I just wished that they did not try to give her a moral compass. That did have a impact on her character on the back half of the series and it didn’t seem to fit.

    1
    1

I’ve got 3 episodes left and she still seems quite morally dubious to me, even if I’m enjoying her attitude to fight fire with fire.

I think it’s such an interesting drama. I nearly choked on my dinner when they mentioned a member of a idol group having a ‘golden phone’…

Timing is everything, isn’t it. This show was on in the mist of alllllll of that.

        1
        2

I actually went back to check exactly when this show aired – compared when all of that news broke. It seems really close to the wire… I’m surprised they got away with that. The depiction of beating girls up in VIP rooms and drugging them in clubs and taking photos, was all rather shockingly close to what we now know is reality

I understand @ndlessjoie. Ep 8 & 9 were particularly hard to watch and if I’d been live-watching, and had to wait a week plus reading all about how this was actually really going on, I might have dropped it too.

Cloggie\’s take on how #WWW got written:

KES (on one of her many shows): I\’ve fallen in love with my male lead. Screw whatever character trajectory I had for the woman. I need to give him more scenes.

KES\’ Assistant Writer (to herself out of KES’ hearing): I’m so fed up with this. My first drama by myself is going to have only kick-ass female characters.

51

In my head, this is what\’s taking place on set of #WWW:

Almost everybody: OMG this part is so much better than what I normally get, it’s allowing me to show JUST WHAT I CAN DO, and I\’m acting the shit out of it. (I’m loving this as a viewer and want to keep posting things on my fan wall)

One actor: this part is so much worse than what I normally get and I’m a bit bored.

5
13

Are you referring to the BTS video of the confession scene?

    0
    1

Is that one actor Jang Ki Yong? Because he’s literally the only one getting the short end of the stick here.

    3
    0

@outofthisworld and @greenfields – sorry, this response has become a bit of an essay.

I didn’t actually know there was a BTS video of the confession scene! I have to look this up now

I admit that I sometimes look at dramas from another angle because I’ve spent a lot of time in RL with professional actors (my ex in-laws were both quite famous at the heights of their careers).

Especially this drama has been interesting in terms of casting and what it can do for the careers of the people in it. It’s basically taken a standard corporate/chaebol drama and gender-swapped every single character. This has meant that for the three female leads, they got the parts that normally the male actors get. Actresses in their (late) thirties often have a hard time getting good roles, as they move out of the traditional ‘female cute lead’ age and before the ‘mother’ age. So I would have expected our three leads to work hard and nail it – to show that there should be more gender-neutral casting, and that they can play General Managers just as well as the next guy. And they absolutely do not disappoint.

Then there is a potentially career-changing role for Ye Soon-jung, because she basically plays the evil gangboss, and if she doesn’t get more parts as a cold psychopath in the future, I’ll be very disappointed. This is her chance to break out of the artistic grandmother/wise woman stereotype and she’s nailing it. She scares the hell out of me.

Lee Jae-Wook should be very grateful to his agent for landing him this part. He gets to play two different parts in one (as the baddy in the makjang drama, as well as the cutie) and is really showing off his skills in being very believable as both of them. It’s a gem of a part for a rookie actor. And who knows what they’re going to do with the twin, he might get to play three different parts within one drama. It’s an eye-catching part and he’s great in it.

So for five actors in the cast, this could be a super-important role and they’re working extremely hard to get the most out of these parts, as they know what it could mean for their future career.

I’ve also been very impressed with Ji Seung-Hyun as the husband, giving a very layered vulnerable performance as the guy so in love with his wife that he’s willing to divorce her.

For Jang Ki Yong in contrast, his part is like ‘just another day in the office’. I’ve seen other actors do very interesting things with very similar parts (Gong Myung in Happy Loner comes to mind) but JKY doesn’t go there. There have been a few moments where he’s absolutely nailed it – like that look of deep desire when the elevator doors opened – but the rest of the time, he’s not that different from other parts he played, which is a real shame.

    10
    1

Wow! Thanks @cloggie what an interesting read!

I agree with almost everything you’ve written here. I don’t have that much issue with Jang Ki Yong but admittedly he’s the least interesting in here, both character and as an actor. There are some who shine only when the role is a more dramatic one. Give them something more mundane and quieter, they can’t quite deliver the nuances or layers. He’s not doing a bad job but it could be better.

It’s funny, I loved his dreamy smile in Go Back Couple but I am getting an overdose of it here. Lately, I’ve been having a difficult relationship with ‘smile’, LOL. Some are driving me nuts in not a good way 😛

      6
      2

Oh, I agree, he isn’t doing a bad job but he’s being upstaged because everybody else is doing an AMAZING job.

I loved him to bits in GBC and also thought he was great in Come and Hug Me. It’s probably why I’m harsh on him XD

        5
        1

        I have to agree!
        1. Thank you @cloggie for this lovely post. You’re so right re the roles women are given and again, it’s one of the many, many reasons I love this drama. As I said elsewhere, it may just make it to my rare 10/10 just for how unconventional it is.
        2. Jang Ki-yong. May I be honest and say I wasn’t particularly impressed with him in TLAHL, Go Back Couple or Kill It? And I remain unimpressed. I know he comes from a modeling career and very frankly, I still see a model. I don’t see an actor.

        2
        0

This drama sadly doesn’t showcase Jang Ki Young’s talent. There was a reason why Baeksang awarded him a New Actor for his performance in Come and Hug Me despite its lacklustre rating. He was stellar in Come and Hug Me and for little appearance he made in My Ahjusshi, he left a lasting impression to me and I appreciated that he took on a disturbing, uncomfortable, yet pitiful role.

Morgan doesn’t have a story outside his relationship with Ta Mi. That’s the gripe I have of this drama. He’s not fleshed out and he’s got more scenes than the other two male characters, but we still don’t know much about him other than he’s willing to string along whatever floats Ta Mi’s boat. Well he’s starting to have a backstory now, but I I think it’s a bit late for me to bother to me invested in his background (yet…)

I feel like, except the family couple writer didn’t intend to write any loveline here. The main loveline is there probably due to pressure from producers. Like in Alhambra, writer doesn’t seem to even try to make it work.

Thought I\’d share that only 2 weeks ago @waadmay and I had a conversation about why the guy playing the actor in WWW was so high up on the cast list.

In addition to squealing about the cute, I also want to give a shout out to Ye Soo-jung being effortlessly badass as the Evil Ganglord (sorry, I mean chaebol mother-in-law at a funeral of course, my mistake) who rules her people with an iron fist.

This role is quite the departure from the usual roles I’ve seen this actress in. She is definitely something else in this drama.

She always plays these kind, artistic, wise characters. Like in On The Way to the Airport, or Twelve Nights.

Here: tattoo gun. Mind blown. She’s obviously having a ball with this part.

The suffering of kdrama fans… We all need Scarlett\’s super powers to bring our favourite actors back to live. More twins!

So I just have to ask… If you were Scarlett, who would you bring back?

Ji Soo from He is Psychometric. Kim Kwon posting a recent picture of him and Da Som opened up the wound that I thought already healed.

      1
      1

Those wounds can go a long time. I still refuse to believe there was an 126th episode to High Kick Through the Roof. It’s one thing if a magnificent story requires a sacrifice to the drama gods; it is something else entirely to kill off two characters for no reason at all!

        2
        0

      I’ve got two.

      1) the traffic cop from Possessed. She didn’t deserve to die. In an alternative universe she had a kick-ass twin sister who single-handedly brings down the baddy
      2) Baek Soo-Ji in Let’s Eat 3. I loved her so much from season 2. Why drama? Why?

      3
      2

Number 2, Baek Soo-Ji. Exactly! Why????

        1
        0

So, a question. Jang Do Han from The Guardians. Did he have to die for the story to work?

        0
        1

I’m okay with him dying – but there could have been a much better way for him to die.

That said, I watched it knowing that he wasn’t going to make it out of the drama alive, so maybe … but … well, it was Kim Young Kwan, so I’m very open to him reappearing as Jang Do Han’s nice twin brother.

          0

Let’s hope there’s no need for triplets!

The twin idea would make the brothers 2x KYK + 1x Shin Dong-wook.
Which is probably all I can handle.

I think I’ve spotted a new kdrama trend that’s giving a whole different meaning to SLS. Anybody else notice the absolute awesomeness of the second female leads recently? They’re not interested in stealing the ML. It’s obvious that they aim higher and just go and steal THE WHOLE F*CKING DRAMA

I’m loving it kdramaland, long may it continue.

Really great second female leads! Scarlett stole my heart in ep 5, Bae Ta Mi asked her for help and she came in a heartbeat and beat that crap out of that car with her! Watching Scarlett is like peeling off skin of onions. She’s so layered and the different sides of Scarlett are so interesting and lovable. I love all her sides especially the one who has a love-hate relationship with makjang dramas! 😂

I really like the direction we are going with them second leads. Hope to see more of them in Dramaland. I saw Kim Ji Won’s article popped up here and would like to add her character in Descendants of the Sun! Loved her character there; she’s got no interest in the main love line and has a story and love line of her own! 😍

When characters take on a life of their own, that’s the best testimony for any actor’s prowess.

I just started watching this and I like it so far.

Does it get bad after 12 eps? And by 12 you mean 12/18 or 12/36?

    1
    2

The trio were great and I love this show so much so I could be biased but the first twelve episodes were full of fun and surprising stuff that after episode twelve some viewers felt the villainy is getting repetitive (not for me though HAHA I still enjoyed this show so much from beginning to end)

      1
      0

No, it doesn’t get bad! 12 eps is my kdrama shorthand for: watching all the nice/cute/fuzzy stuff and stopping before Angst kicks in. I’m rewatching it and loving it all over again.

I’m also feeling nostalgic for this time last year when it aired and I was totally obsessed with it and spent soooo much time discussing this show with other Beanies

      2
      1

That’s great to hear. I took a peek at the drama thread, there’s so much discussion. That’s usually a sign of either a good/thought provoking or really bad drama. Obviously in this case, it’s good not bad.

        1

There was a lot to talk about! Not everybody liked our tsundere heroine in the beginning (I think I spent 6 recaps just defending her – because she’s awesome) and then there’s the whole AI/human discussion…

Ah…yes, now that you are back being So Bong, I remember this was your profile pic for a very long time. You must have loved her. I’m starting to warm up to her too after a rather uneven start.

Truth is I picked this up because My Absolute Boyfriend is a letdown and I wanted to see if this show does it better.

Ah yes, I seem to have dropped MAB for an AYHT rewatch.

I liked that the drama did a gender reversal of the traditional rom-com male/female roles: she gets to be difficult and prickly at the beginning, and he’s a smiley beam of sunshine.

          1
          0

    Wait wait wait
    Lemme tell you a story.
I have always thought it would be fun to open some kind of game room like this. But instead of an escape room or Lazer tag, there’s just cubicles filled with different shit and you pick your choice of weapon, from broadsword to axe to baseball bat or whatever, and then you just full on destroy everything in the room. Crystal, cardboard, styrofoam, maybe even have a fruit ninja room.
    You’re in protective gear obviously.
The only difference is I didn’t plan on having it as uh violence management centre, my original idea came because coming up to and during one’s period one typically feels like committing several first degree murders and also breaking every plate in the house and I think it’d be cool if there was a place you could actually do that.
I feel there’d be a lot of legal and mental concerns if released commercially BUT I STILL WANNA DO IT.
You wouldn’t be attacking anyone real. The plates could be stuff that needs to be recycled anyway.
I feel like sometimes some people need a healthy controlled release of their anger and destroying a table with a broadsword would be just the thing … That or it’d promote even more violent behaviour… Anyway. I want a broadsword now.

I’m doing a course in writing a Radio Drama at the moment. It’s a lot of fun, but I thought I’d share this experience.

There are about 10 people in the class, in the first half we wrote stuff, and we’re now in the second half where we actually perform and record 4 of the written small scenes. It’s all radio so you don’t have to look the part, but still, I’m not an actor so this is a bit out of my comfort zone. However, going out of your comfort zone is a good thing every now and then. There are also more men than women in the class, so I get to do more parts than some of the guys. It’s a really nice group of people, a fun atmosphere and everybody is very supportive.

The part that I had to play in one of the scenes basically involves a woman being restrained to stop talking so that the baddies wouldn’t find them. It was hard to get the sounds of the struggle right by just rustling with clothes, so the teacher basically said: you’re going to have to get physical with each other to get this right. Yeah, this was so far out of my comfort zone that it needed a whole new postcode but hey, I was up for doing that. Plus we only had to make the right sounds and I was quite comfortable with the guy I was doing this scene with.

Only, what I hadn’t counted on, was that my body found it a lot harder to appreciate the difference between real and acting and my inner monologue pretty much went like this:
Cloggy’s body: fight – fight
Cloggy’s brain: this is fake. This is fine
Cloggy’s body: struggle struggle
Cloggy’s brain: do not damage your fellow-actor. You actually get on with this guy
Cloggy’s body: I can feel he’s quite skinny. We can totally take him down
Cloggy’s brain: do not pull his face away from the microphone. (poor guy still had to say his lines too)

Then my next lines – a bit after this struggle – were: thank you , you saved my life. I was surprised by how much I didn’t want to say that. I wanted to say something very very very different. Mind won over yet again.

Cloggy’s brain afterwards: that was totally fine
Cloggy’s body: yeah not a big fan of that

So even though I have to give my body a pat on the back for totally being up for the fight, I was really intrigued by how strongly that Fight or Flight response was activated by something that I knew was fake and I have a renewed respect for the (mainly) actresses who have to go through that as a job.

And yes, yet again I’m seeing certain scenes in a whole new light.

Thank you for a very enlightening post. You made me wonder, do they have nightmares occasionally??

    1

They must have. I can’t believe they don’t, especially as they have to get into character as well: look fearful, crying etc. That must make it so much worse.

This course sounds fascinating! I love radio dramas! Although the only radio dramas I’ve heard so far are the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and the BBC’s adaptation of A Suitable Boy. Do you have any radio drama reccos? Thanks!

The BBC did a radio adaptation of A Suitable Boy? How interesting! I keep waiting for someone to make a movie of it but of course it would be impossible.

The radio adaptation is Fab. Speaking as someone who can’t decide on favourite books, but if I could, A Suitable Boy would be at the top. The radio adaptation is voiced by some really good Indian actors who’ve done no-mainstream films. A film based on it would be impossible, yes, but maybe a series? (but they’d butcher it i’m sure – _-)

Yes, let’s have a series! It’s one of my favorite books as well 😁

It’s hard to recommend something as things that the BBC does (and they’re pretty much the only place where radio drama gets made) are only available for 30 days after. They did a great adaptation of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park for example, but that’s no longer on their website…

Hitchhiker’s Guide is an absolute radio classic.

Ah that’s too bad! the BBC iradio player isn’t available where I live either so… sigh. Not sure if your class might have touched on this but I’ve heard a few audiobooks where they add in background sounds, and read it in a dramatised way, with different actors for different parts. Would this be considered an audio-drama? Is there a difference between such dramas and radio dramas apart from the medium for which they’re made?

There are two different ways of doing books. If they read out the entire text (including all the descriptions) and add sounds, even if they use different actors it’s still considered an audiobook.

If it’s partial text, descriptions have been cut out or cut short, and it’s dramatised, it’s considered a radio/audio drama.

Not sure if I explained that very well…

This is really interesting and enlightening. Add in youth, power imbalances, and for many, past traumas, I imagine that that response could be even stronger and more difficult to restrain. I’m glad Hollywood is beginning to bring Intimacy Coordinators to sets to prevent abuse and coercion of vulnerable actors during intimate scenes, but perhaps that needs to extend to all scenarios that place actors in physically (and psychologically) vulnerable positions.

Also, that sounds like a cool class.

It’s a really cool class and I’ve learned that telling a story when all you’ve got is sound, is very hard.

As I’m waiting for my other dramas to be subbed, I randomly picked up Unkind Ladies on KBS’ YouTube channel. I’m totally loving it. This cast list probably explains why…

A cast full of experienced actresses jumping at the chance to play another role than ‘the cute one’s mum’ or ‘the evil aunt’

Just changing my look for the weekend, to celebrate the Errand Boys Cat Extravaganza

Here are two pictures of my cat Boswell. In the first one, he\’s proudly modelling one of the t-shirts that @ChinguMode made – if anybody is wondering how she became a Loan shark so quickly, well, I guess now the cat is out of the bag.

This video shows my cat at his worst behaviour: his obsession with string. This has led me to believe that maybe in a previous life he was a physicist but now, as a cat, the only theory he can come up with is: if I pull it something happens.

It’s been a while since the Errand Boys were asked to run some errands, but @YYishere called on all of us to adopt a stray cat, in the Handbook for Errand Boys – please check it out here. http://www.dramabeans.com/members/yyishere/activity/787617/

I think we should all do this – it is for a good cause after all – and post the image of the cat we’ve adopted. Here’s my new cat.

This can – of course – also be a picture of your real cat

You have to turn it into a gif and then you can post it.

Or you can post a picture on your fan wall and just tag me

By reply section I meant comment section. I know you understood. I just felt like explaining my brain fart to you…

          I’ll try to gif trick.

Ah thanks @cloggie – I don’t have any cats right now but I’ve had three that I loved and were with me for many long years. I’ll get their photos made into gifs and load them later. Mickey, Kato and Bert.
I miss them, but I don’t miss the cat hair and litter boxes…. but I still miss them.

I love my 2 cats but I will NEVER miss the rude and obnoxious way they wake me up at ungodly hours of the morning. n e v e r.

I’m now using an interactive cat feeder for my cat’s dry food and that has stopped him from waking me up. It’s been such a good result! I’m not a fan of meowing at 4am

First I got a Petsafe timed feeder, which meant that Mr Cat got fed at 4am, as he liked. Then I moved to Doc & Phoebe’s mouse shaped feeder, where you fill fake mice with food and hide them around the house. I think it’s amusing, Mr Cat thinks it’s fine and no longer meows for his food

I currently have 2 strays. Well, not strays any more, but you know what I mean. And they are tired of me being gone to do errands and are looking forward to the view from the rooftop 🙂

There have been a couple others — you are looking at my first one in my avatar.

I’ve posted about the 2nd here
    http://www.dramabeans.com/members/lordcobol/activity/234594/

BTW, he eventually settled down and became to closest I’ve had to a normal cat. (1st was abnormally affectionate, intelligent and polite, 3rd is dumb and uncoordinated, 4th is unusually timid even by cat standards).

      That’s a great cat story!

I posted a picture of my real cat (a stray who I’ve had for just over a year) in the response to YY’s post.

@lordcobol – thank you for a big laugh this morning! How did I miss that? You are a very funny writer…
Now I’ll have to write about my cats that kept me company for a total of 22 years.

Yes, I think it’s perfectly fine to adopt a stray rabbit too

Stray no. 1 is 8 years old and was spoiled to the max for the first 4 years of her life ‘as the only child’. Now that she has a little human around and another stray she is moody and grumpy. However exactly at 8pm each night she will jump on the sofa to stare with ‘the most affectionate eyes’ at her dad and me, asking for pats. She prefers to sit on my hip, with half her body of top of me and the other on the sofa while I watch my kdramas.

Stray no. 2 was picked up from the shelter as a skinny, underfed and a super tiny kitten. I had to nurse him 24/7 to bring his weight to an acceptable limit. He is now 4, larger than an average cat, and has the nickname of ‘wanna be puppy’. He likes to bring his 12 kilos of fur muscles atop my chest, nose touching my nose, while I lie on the sofa and watch my kdrama’s.

My stray (from a shelter) likes to sit half on my lap and half on the sofa too! He’s obsessed with food and therefore on a strict diet

I would love to adopt a cat, but my bird would probably kill me in my sleep.
I did adopt a dog this year from the pound. They forgot to mention her severe anxiety and Houdini skills so it has been interesting. Plus, and hate to say this about a fellow female, but pretty sure she has been getting by on her looks. Lol. But she is mine now 🤷‍♀️
