Beanie level: Rooftop room dweller

Cloggie’s worlds collide (once again)

Cloggie’s male friend who lives in the US: Korean imports are everywhere these days
Cloggie: Oh, you’ve seen BTS?
Cloggie’s friend: What’s a BTS?
Cloggie: Not what – who. Weren’t you talking about kpop?
Cloggie’s friend: I was talking about cars
Cloggie: I’ll get my coat.

3 easy steps to drama addiction: Angel’s Last Mission case study

Step 1: I’m not going to watch this until ep 4. Evidence of this smart decision http://www.dramabeans.com/2019/05/premiere-watch-angels-last-mission-love-one-spring-night/#comment-3463966

Step 2: see that some beanies like it and press play. Think it’s the best thing I’ve seen in a while http://www.dramabeans.com/2019/05/team-dramabeans-what-were-watching-157/#comment-3466488

Step 3: watch all the episodes that are subbed & cry when there’s no more (because Shin Hye Sun is amazing and L looks like an angel)

My parents: enjoy your birthday with all those that are near and dear around you.
Me: me, my cat, a book, two new games, some drama watching and a bottle of wine. Excellent. Result!

When Cloggie met @hotcocoagirl

Unsurprisingly, @hotcocoagirl was delightful and we had a lot of fun talking kdramas.

Here are the evening’s highlights:

Best moment: Introducing Coco to the culinary delight that is Kimchi pancakes

Not surprising moment: forgetting to take a photo of the food until @hotcocoagirl said the word ‘picture’ and that reminded me. So yes, there was (even) more food to begin with

Most embarrassing moment saying kamsahamnida to our waitress and her not understanding me. Made only slightly less embarrassing when it turned out she didn’t speak Korean at all (apart from annyeonghaseyo which she’d said to me when I arrived). Turned kinda sweet when she said it back to us when we paid the bill. And yes, I am amused by the fact that the US/UK combo taught the Thai waitress in the Korean restaurant a word in Korean. That’s the true global power of kdrama. Plus, I think that being able to say that will come in handy, so we did something useful.

Most secretive moment : the eagle-eyed amongst you might have spotted that there are three plates. There may or may not have been a third person there. That may or may not have been Coco’s sister. As the two of them are potentially plotting a take-over of their place of work, which will only work if nobody knows they’re sisters, it would be wrong of me to talk about Coco’s sister.

Ep 13 of My Fellow Citizens and my favourite Loan Shark (not with a heart of gold) is still in fine form.

Apart from the awesome female characters, it\’s the physical slapstick humour that makes My Fellow Citizens such a fun watch.

(keep an eye on the guy with the braces going in for the hug)

Lee Min-ho and Kim Go-eun in a KES drama is a hard-miss for me. Kang Ha-neul and Gong Hyo-jin in a drama written by the Fight My Way writer and Are You Human Too PD on the other hand…

For @katakwasabi here’s my favourite Hoo Ja outfit: ep 6 & 7’s Evil Head Schoolgirl look

I\’m slowly catching up with My Fellow Citizens. I love dramas that have such a wide range of fun characters…

Okay, this is a tough one for me to admit, but maybe I\’m loving Kim Min-Jung even more than Lee Yoo-Young.

Reposted it without the screencap which I realised was a bit of a spoiler for people who hadn’t yet watched ep 4

But is it a good show? I didn’t particularly like eps 1 and 2, but I’m waiting for beanies’ views on this

I’m not watching, but from everything I’ve read on here that’s a good thing.

Out of the 4 eps I’ve watched, I’ve enjoyed ep 3 most.

I don’t think it was translated to the characters at all. The words appeared for viewers. That’s my interpretation at least.

Oh really? I thought that the characters got to see it as well… You could well be right.

The good thing about the bots randomly commenting on old posts is that I get to see things I had no idea existed. Like photos of Song Il-kook getting into shape back in 2010

Having finished my Marriage Not Dating rewatch, it struck me how good the final quarter of the drama is. I know, not words I say a lot.

Where lesser dramas would have glossed over the deeper issues with the couple and their families (they confessed! It’s all puppies and unicorns!) Marriage Not Dating turns it into a very satisfying emotional ending. When the dating becomes ‘real’, it’s clear that this relationship isn’t going to be all clear sailing. But, they actually discuss their problems (her character growth) and instead of ignoring them address them heads on ( his character growth) and they mostly work through them TOGETHER. That’s right, together. No Noble Idiocy, no Running Away, but dealing with stuff like a couple. Even if brushing someone else’s teeth might be going a step too far.

See that, kdrama-land? That’s how it should be done. Loved it.

    Maybe I need a rewatch.

The first time round, I really liked the first half: the cute, the set-up, the hilarious antics and (I’ll admit it) the amount of skinship.

On this rewatch, I still liked that but I loved the other parts of the drama so much more. I think there’s nothing like having seen a lot of dramas mess up, to make you appreciate it when a drama does it right and avoids the cliches.

This is one of my most favorite shows with one of my most hated second male leads.

I especially loved the ending they gave his family members.
I liked her character growth, which made the misunderstanding at the wedding more eye-rolling to me. I get that they wanted to get to this everything-is-ruined-shot again, but the way they did it was so cheap.

Maybe I should watch it again. Because I *whispers*….hated it….

This was like the 2nd or 3rd k-drama I ever watched. I loved Han Groo and Yeon Woo Jin. I miss Han Groo. She got married and dropped off the map.

I thought there was a touch of noble idiocy and running away, wasn’t there? I think it’s time for a rewatch.

I love Han Groo. Didn’t she have twin babies? I hope she comes back because she’s such a good actress.

I wasn’t sure about eps 1 & 2 of Abyss, but ep 3 redeemed itself by giving me a Scooby Gang Love Triangle.

Really? I’ve been putting off episode 2, but Scooby Gangs are one of my favorite things.

I started liking it once Se-yeon took over Mi-do’s life and meets the police detective ex-bf. Because then there was a Scooby Gang and a great moment when Se-yeon insists on driving the police car.

I was waiting to start it until I had four episodes. And now I definitely will.

Just to warn you: ep 2 wasn’t great – especially a couple of side characters commenting on Park Bo-Young’s character not being beautiful or pretty enough to date someone like Ahn Hyo-seop really rubbed me the wrong way. As if it’s all about looks! Plus, if they wanted her character not to be beautiful, they should have picked another actress, instead of having all characters around her comment on how not-pretty she is.

Anyway. Ep 3 was much better. They styled her more like ‘ordinary girl’ and her character is so hilariously kick-ass that I couldn’t help enjoying it.

Thanks Netflix. I was waiting for them to have lunch in a well-known sandwich place, ever since I saw that Product Placement warning at the start.

TotM Post: how kdrama influenced my food.

Exhibit A: my dinner, rice with 4 side dishes
Exhibit B: 2 kg of kimchi that I made yesterday

    Yummm..that kimchi.

I wanted to make kimchi, so far didn’t have time, made only fermented cabbage 10 liters but there was an asian shop, actually 2 next to each other, in Cork in Ireland, so I bought there everything I needed, but now is gone, I was so disappointed, because here in Brittany there’s non.

Do you use little crevettes as well?

I skipped the little prawns. My recipe called them ‘optional’.

I just mentioned Kimchi on another post, but I eat eat almost everyday now. The one I eat is very mild and no shrimp so not sure how I’d do with other kimchi.

Anyway, this looks good. What are the side dishes?

    1

From left to right: Beansprouts with sesame & garlic, seasoned garlic stems and cucumber kimchi (on the same plate) and honey and soy Lotus roots.

I always have a batch of pickled radish in my refrigerator, usually have some sort of cucumber side dish, and whenever I can find bean sprouts (which are shocking difficult to find here because the grocery stores are afraid of salmonella and listeria) I make them with sesame oil and garlic. Korean side dishes are lovely.

Feel free to share your kimchi, I haven’t tried making it yet.

yeah the bean sprouts came with a huge ‘MUST NOT BE EATEN RAW’ warning label.

I’ve written a full TotM post about the miracle of side dishes.

Whenever I see that the latest Beanie Comments are from someone new, who\’s purely come here to rant about the ending of a drama, I want to give them a (virtual) hug and say: welcome to kdramaland
