You can only pick one: Platonic drama friendship

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one platonic drama friendship

mistyisles: My catnip. My kryptonite. I’ve written an entire essay about how beautifully dramaland does friendship, and now I’m supposed to pick only one of those friendships?? I agonized over this one, but the more I thought about it, the more I kept coming back to one platonic pairing in particular. Because while I shed many tears over the romance in Twenty Five Twenty One, for me the central relationship of that show will always be the complicated, ever-shifting relationship between rivals-turned-best-friends Hee-do and Yoo-rim. From the very first episode, Hee-do’s #1 goal was to become Yoo-rim’s officially recognized fencing rival, and their final match against each other ranks among my top K-drama scenes of all time for its intensity and unforgettable emotional impact. Their relationship runs the gamut from idol and fan to enemies to lifelong friends — and everything in between — and I laughed and cried and cheered them on throughout the entire journey.

DaebakGrits: Oh, look! I’m writing about Hospital Playlist again. Is anyone actually surprised, though, that I’d pick Joon-wan and Song-hwa as my favorite platonic friendship? For starters, these two foodies are absolutely hilarious whenever a meal is placed in front of them, and it amuses me to no end that the rest of the 99 Crew has to keep them in check or else they won’t get a bite in edgewise. But, the thing that really makes this particular friendship stand out to me is how the writer/director used them to specifically ridicule the absurd belief that men and women can’t be “just friends.” As someone with a lot of male friends, I’ve always found that idea silly, so when Joon-wan caught Song-hwa’s ex cheating on her and the ex responded by accusing Joon-wan of harboring feelings for Song-hwa, I applauded the way Joon-wan put ex in his place.

solstices: Simply say the word “friendship,” and I immediately think of the bone-deep bond that Lee Jong-seok and Kim Woo-bin shared in School 2013. As Nam-soon and Heung-soo, these two displayed such visceral despair and unwavering devotion from their devastating separation to their poignant reunion. They may not have been the most eloquent at expressing their feelings — “dumb bastard” is pretty much bro-speak for “you’re my best friend, please always stay by my side” — but their mutual concern, loyalty, and love always shone through in their instinctive desire to defend and protect each other. Beyond just our main pair, I also loved the web of friendships in the classroom, connecting diverse personalities (including the bully trio!) over the simple joys of adolescence.

Unit: Dal-li and Won-tak’s friendship in Dal-li and Gamjatang is my fav platonic friendship yet. In the beginning, I thought it was going to be a one-sided crush on his part, and I seriously dreaded that because after everything Dal-li had been through, she did not need to worry about yet another man’s feelings. I was relieved to see that Won-tak was a genuinely supportive big brother-like figure in Dal-li’s life, and he did not try to take advantage of her or sway her emotionally even after she moved in with him. I loved the zero awkwardness and how comfortable they were around each other in that tiny apartment of his, and it was really refreshing to see two non-siblings under one roof without anyone catching feelings for the other. Unlike the case with some other dramas I know… *Coughs* Her Private Life *coughs*

Dramaddictally: I have always loved the friendship between the characters played by Junho and Kang Hanna in Just Between Lovers. When I originally saw the drama, I remember it being the first time I noticed a mature relationship between a man and a woman that remained platonic. Apart from the maturity, I love that they start out as enemies and end up supporting each other as friends. It’s a nice transition to watch. They also have a natural and easy rapport that in another drama would make them very shippable. Here, though, the leads are so obviously meant for each other that it never even entered my mind for the friends to be anything more. Although, being a fan of both actors – and finding them individually so pretty to look at – I certainly wouldn’t complain if they appeared together again in a non-platonic way.

alathe: Look, if there’s one thing I’ve learned from binge-watching two seasons of Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim and recapping a third, it’s… well, it’s that a bovie is an electrosurgical device used to prevent blood loss in the operating room. But, also! I have learned that the friendship between Teacher Kim and Nurse Oh is eternal and unbreakable. These two are the very definition of platonic soulmates. Nurse Oh was the very first Doldam recruit, and since then, she and Teacher Kim have worked seamlessly together. Not to spoil Season 3, but one of my favorite moments of the entire show was that heart-to-heart they had in the final episode, where Nurse Oh gently knocked some sense into a despairing Teacher Kim. They just get each other — and, what’s more, they inspire each other to be better. Plus, at heart, they are both a) hyper-competent, b) unafraid to call each other out when needed, and most importantly, c) deeply unhinged. May they continue to save lives, deliver brutal verbal smackdowns, and be utterly terrifying together forevermore!

You took the words right out of my mouth.

What Hwang-Han have is unique because what they have isn't like any other. There's mutual respect and understanding and they aren't afraid to call out on each other when needed. A friendship that makes them a better person. How beautiful and precious is that.

Totally! Their friendship is truly amazing. There was one scene, where all the girls went to take over a shift in the convenience store for Jin-myung, and she didn’t even ask them for it (at least as far as I remember)! They just noticed she was late, so they all went to her pat time job instead, because they all knew she depended on the income and couldn’t lose the job. Left me in awe! 👏
Plus how they all took care of Ye-eun (season 2). The list goes on…

Also in season two when Jin-myung suggests that all of them go apple picking! As much as Jin-myung tries not to show it, she’s very caring and throughout the episode she tries her best to cheer up her housemates, who are all going through their own stuff. It was such a lovely episode and at the end when all the gals go look around for Ji-won, all of them concerned and worried but putting on a brave face…made me cry😢
I love them all, they are all so precious

Dang. I will never be able to pick. Be it the growing up together friends of Reply1988 vs the friendship that has stood the test of time in Hospital playlist vs a friendship that is forming and showing signs of lasting in Weightlifting fairy vs a friendship that feels like home in Be Melodramatic , I will never be able to choose. So I pass.

For this prompt, the first one that entered my mind was the platonic friendship between Shim Woo-joo and Yoon Joon in Call It Love.
During the drama, I sort of lived in fear that it would turn out that he had feelings for her (it was clear that she would not for him), but happily no.

The scene near the end of Episode 7 where Woo-joo is figuring out what love feels like to her, and he's being sort of a jerk about it because he can tell "what's wrong" (both in terms of how bad she has it, but also the complications that will arise from who she has it bad for), but she can't tell what it is--until she raises her emotions to fight him about it--is friendship gold.

He's not always the nicest to her, and sometimes I felt that he was a bit too protective of a family that isn't his (although that has an eventual justificaiton), but he's her bedrock in many ways by being her sounding board, punching bag, and shoulder to cry on, all rolled into one.

Required fields are marked *

Such a good answer. I didn't even mind his protectiveness of the family, because it was so apparent from so early on that it really was his family, in a much more real way than his biological family was. Yoon Joon was like a true sibling Shim Woo-joo, fighting with her and supporting her and calling her out and letting her lean on him.

Mixed-Up Investigation Agency, by the same screenwriter as Age of Youth and White Christmas, is probably my all-time favorite example of this, and I keep hoping it will become legally available some day. The first few episodes feel silly and cheaply made, but by the end it becomes something weird, unique, and wonderful.

I will say that some of the examples mentioned by the DB staff strike me as not so much "platonic" but as queer couples with a bit of "straight-washing" (School 2013, 25-21, cough, cough).

Required fields are marked *

In the queer-couples-with-a-bit-of-straightwashing category, I'm nominating Nam Han-joon and Han Jae-jung from Cafe Minamdang. Their "friendship" had the most chemistry of any couple in that show, and I'm still waiting for the rewrite that gives us Seo In-guk trying to get justice for his lover.

I have a theory that the Twenty-Five, Twenty-One writer (who also did Search: WWW) REALLY wants to write us the lesbian romance kdrama we all deserve but she knows it would be a hard sell right now so until the day she can do it she’s gonna toe the line as close as she possibly can.

Oooh great prompt!! I'll go with the duo from Navillera Sim Deok-cheol and Lee Chae-rok. I just about died crying at that absolutely heart-touching ending scene. The trust and bond they developed between each other was unparalleled.

Sneaking in a second choice - the three MLs from Welcome to Waikiki - they're a hilarious comedic trio but also a wholesome found family.

There are so many, so it's difficult to say this is my actual, for real, die-on-this-hill favorite, but I'm going with Ga Mo-tak and Chu Mae-ok from The Uncanny Counter. Yes, they are part of a larger found family dynamic, but I think they count in their own right also. They are the older generation of Counters, both in seniority and age, and they function as confidants of each other in lots of different situations. I was sort of worried as I watched season 1 that the writer was going to introduce a love storyline between two of the counters, but they resisted that (I think) to the show's benefit. They are the beautiful, supportive parents of the found family, but in a platonic life partner sort of way, which just makes it more heartwarming.

Kwak Dong-yeon and Kim Yoo-jung - Love In The Moonlight.
Kim Nam-hee and Nam Gyu-ri - You Are My Spring.
Hae-soo (IU) and the 13th prince(Nam Joo-hyuk) - Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. I still can't understand the fate that befell the sweet 13th prince. Like why?
Lee Ji-an(IU) and Park Dong-hoon(Lee Sun-kyun) - My Mister.
Go Ah-in(Lee Bo-young) and Jung Jar-hoon(Lee Ki-woo) - Agency. It surprised me at how they didn't write a romance between this two. They clicked. Beyond clicking, they had a mutual respect and supported each other.

Was there a romance between the leads in On The Verge Of Insanity? If there isn't, I'm naming Choi Ban-seok(Jung Jae-young) and Dang Ja-young(Moon So-ri).
I don't know if this one counts. Jung Rosa(Kim Hae-sook) and Ju Jung-su(Kim Gap-soo) - Hospital Playlist.

A particular favorite that I desperately wished transcended into a romance...
Yeom Ki-jung(Lee El) and Park Jin-u(Kim Woo-hyung) - My Liberation Notes. I made them a pair in my own MLN ending. If Park Hae-young ain't making them a couple, I'm not hesitant to make a couple out of them.

Honourable mentions:
1) Grim reaper and ji Eun tak from Goblin
2) Our two female leads in Mr. Sunshine.
3) Gong myungs and Han ji eun's characters in Be melodramatic. I am seriously shocked that they didn't end up together.
4) Go mun young and Sang tae in it's okay to not be okay
5) Cha hyun + Bae ta mi + Song ga kyung. *Chef's kiss
6) All the friendships in my roommate is a gumiho. Jae jun and hyeri's character as well as Kang Hanna + jang ki yong's.
7) Park bo young + Lee Soo hyuk in Doom at your service

I'm kind of sleepy so I can't remember all the characters names all now.
A good platonic friendship is 100 times better than a lackluster romance

Law School showed that different people with different personalities can come together for the same goal. This is true to real life where your group of friends will not always share the same values, interests, and perspectives as you. You may be extra close with one or two of them but you will still hang out and be there for those that you are less close with.

I hope you enjoy it. Being a fight guy I thought JDY’s physicality in this drama was outstanding. Right up there with Jung Hae-in in D.P. (2021) (Netflix) and the BLOUDHOUNDS (Netflix) boys Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi.

I almost offered BLOODHOUNDS as an example of platonic friendship. Those two guys were terrific together. It was LSY’s character that really pushed the friendship at the beginning. In BLOODHOUNDS the ROK Maine Corp (as band of brothers) comes off much better than the way the ROK Army came did in D.P.

That is really a hard one. Just like kdramas has set the bar high for romantic relationships, it did the same for friendships. I would go with the one from prison playbook. For me the central relationship was the loyal-to-bone friendship between Je-hyuk and Joon-ho, it was heart-melting to see Je-hyuk greet Joon-ho that warmly when they ran into each other in a restaurant and Je-hyuk comment of "not being busy when it comes to Jun-ho@ speaks volumes of the deep bond those two share even though they haven't met in years.

It always surprised me how the mothers could remain friends without Seungwan’s mum calling Jiung’s mum out for emotionally abusing her son throughout his childhood. It is a pity that Zombie Detective stayed platonic but then it was one of the bestest Die-Hard-Ally dynamics of all times where they would have pulled the other out of tar and mud if need be. I love friendships that are so strong they feel more like family than anything else.
Those four were a beautiful family, especially Ae Ra and Sol Hee with their mother-daughter dynamic.

More family-like friendships I love:
—Reply 88, Be Melo and Hospital Playlist (do I need to explain this? Hahaha)
—Just Between Lovers (Gang Doo and Sang Man. If family isn't someone that would give you their organs, Idk what is)
—Oh My Ghost (the restaurant's staff. They had such a love-hate relationship. That's real real family lol)
—Still 17 and IOTNBOKAY (both in my top ten found families. Moon Young x Sang Tae, and all the kids from Still 17. The high school kids and the adult kids).
—Mr Queen (Bong Hwan-ah and his girls. They would die for each, that's family)
—Reply 94 (Na Jung and Haitai were practically siblings. Super cute)
—Ho Gu's Love (in this case, one of the friends was really his family. Ho Gu and his sister were amazing).

One of the many things I love about Kdramas is how well they write community, whether that is family, neighbors or friendships.

So many favorites have already been mentioned here by others so I'll just add a few more:

The ladies of Sh**ting Stars have such great camaraderie and I love how well they support each other.
Baek Seung Soo and Lee Se Young's grudging co-worker relationship in Stove League that turns into one of admiration and support.
The high school boys of Still 17 - just adorable!
The Fight for My Way foursome, friends for life.
Kim Seul Gi is always great as the perennial best friend/sister but she has really good chemistry with Oh Yeon Seo in Love with Flaws. Their friendship was one of the few redeeming aspects of that series.
Jung Shi Hyun and Kim Hyun Soo's inspiring and heart breaking bromance in Heartless City.

I could probably name more, but we'd be here all day.

Many come to mind... But if I had to pick just one, I'll go with P.K. and Buja in Korean Odyssey because this spans throughout the entire plot line. While P.K. remains faithful to his character's personality from the actual book (aka someone who can't be trusted and would consider betraying Monkey at the first occasion), he is very protective of Bu-ja and he remains someone she can count on, even long after her body's been taken by an evil priestess. There is nothing to gain from this friendship from his perspective, and he's never wanted to gain anything from it. So, I've always liked the special bond he's got with her.

I loved them too. In fact, I shipped them, before I realized that it was a beautiful platonic friendship.

@mistyisles This is the first time U have been really intrigued about TWENTY FIVE TWENTY ONE. I just might start it soon...

@daebakgrits I loved the friendship between Joon-wan and Song-hwa so much that I wasn't really sad at Ik-Jun's lackluster romance.

@dramaddictally The friendship between Junho and Kang Hanna was the only thing I liked about JUST BETWEEN LOVERS.

I have to go with Dear My Friends.

It's ridiculous how much I love this show. How people can know each other so long and still be friends into the second generation is so amazing.

Of course, I look Hospital Playlist and Doctor Romantic, but Dear My Friends is it for me
