Thank you Beanies!

Your favorite kdrama cast is?

3
17

The Goblin ensemble, The Matchmakers ensemble, The 25-21 ensemble, Healer’s ensemble and Faith’s ensemble.

I would have included the Moon Embracing the Sun ensemble but for one small problem (Han Ga-In) 🥹

    4

Extraordinary You’s ensemble, for all of them it was their first important role, they were around the same age and they did well. It was grea to see Kim Hye-Yoon and Lee Jae-Wook in the episode of House on Wheels with Rowoon.

Hospital Playlist’s ensemble for the music band, they did so well and were very supportive with each other.

I really liked The Matchamkers cast too.

        I agree!

You know, I love the cast from Hospital Playlist, but I don’t just know why I can’t see them as a cast in any other drama 🥹🥹

Oh my days, thank you for reminding me! Be Melodramatic is a must as well. Everything about that cast just works on me, I mean everything, including cameos! 😌

Beanies, who are your favorite drama characters of all time?

I have many but I’ll go first.

7
34

Let’s start with winter dramas (because why not), male – Kim Shin (Goblin) and female – Kang Dan Yi (Romance is a Bonus Book).

Kim Shin is obviously depressed but hopeful, loving, cute, petty, reverent. What’s not to like?

Dan Yi is hopeful, joyful, curious, intelligent, non-judgmental, cute, helpful.

    Let’s hear yours

    7
    0

Cheon Song-yi in You From Another Star.

Followed closely (and not in order) by
Kim Boong-do in Queen In-hyun’s Man
Kim So-hyun’s characters in School 2015
K and the inspector in Inspector Koo
    Cha Yeon-jin in Girl K

Spike in Buffy and Angel (it didn’t say KDRAMA characters)

But give me a while and I’ll think of a few more.

    7
    2

Kim Boong-do in Queen In-hyun’s Man is still among my favorites.

      5

Reading this makes me realize I totally butchered Cheon Song-Yi’s spelling in my own post haha I just couldn’t remember exactly what her name was I guess TT TT it’s been too long

      1
      0

If we’re just talking about K-dramas, then I have 2:

    1. Ji Eun Soo (portrayed by Eugene Kim, “Save Your Last Dance for Me”, 2004/05)
    2. Kang Hye Soo (portrayed by Uee, “Marriage Contract”, 2016)

Both women exhibit, grace under pressure, grit, an inner and quiet strength that propels them to keep going despite their outer circumstances and surroundings

    Non K-dramas— then C-drama characters:

    1. Wei Ying/ Wei Wu Xian (Xiao Zhan, “The Untamed”, 2019)
    2. Shi Ying (Xiao Zhan, “The Longest Promise”, 2023)

Both exhibit grace, kindness, an inner strength, genuine compassion— not simply sympathy— and a love for those in need and the marginalized, despite their own personal circumstances and struggles. They think less FOR themselves but don’t think less OF themselves and what they can do so that those around them are happy and well and loved

    6
    2

Oh my gosh I totally wasn’t expecting to see 2. Kang Hye Soo (portrayed by Uee, “Marriage Contract”, 2016) on someone else’s list as well!!

And I agree SO much with all your comments about her. Just a lovely character to watch.

      2
      1

Yea, I’m an old-timer— meaning, I’ve been watching Kdramas since I can remember, msince before it became popular— and not very many Kdramas or characters have stayed with me throughout the years—not even the classics, like “Winter Sonata”, “Dae Jong Geum”, or even “…Sam Soon”—but she is one of them that have stayed with me and in my heart ♥️ And probably forever will

        2
        0

Kang Hye Soo! I still think she’s UEE’s best work till date. Great choice. 👏🏽👏🏽 👏🏽

      2
      1

Agree 💯!! I’m waiting on the day that Uee will get the role in which it will top her role of Kang Hye Soo. I also liked her in “Golden Rainbow”, but for sure, her role in “Marriage Contract” is the best I’ve seen of her so far

Jang Geu-rae (Im Si Wan) from Misaeng (2014) YAAAS

So happy to see some from Prison Playbook made your list. They all did so well in that drama, really.

      Ditto on Chief Kim

I also thought about Dong Sik in Psychopath Diary!

Prison Playbook and Misaeng are full of memorable characters 😊

And Dong Sik (Psychopath Diary) is unforgettable too. One of a kind.

        2
        1

I just had this thought – it kind of feels almost like “A Paradox Killer” is the more serious version of Psychopath Diary in a way. Everyday worker actually becomes psychotic killer instead of just thinking he is one.

          1
          3

You are right, it reminded me of Psychopath Diary when I watched the trailer.

I’m not very interested in A Paradox Killer right now, even though I loved Psychopath Diary. I guess I’m not a fan of the style of many dramas produced by Netflix 🤔
I have already read about a sex scene in the first episode. Squid Game also had a gratuitous sex scene.

You have two of my favorites here: Louie from Shopping King Louie (one of my autumn picks) and Kim Sung Ryeong from Chief Kim (one of my summer picks).

I actually love them for the same reasons: they both have the kind of background that they will be justified to be assholes but they are not. They are helpful, friendly, slightly crazy, adorable and smart in their own way.

      1

      👏 👏 👏
      Impressive list. 🥰

      1
      1

I can’t name them. Too many to recount.

    5
    1

but maybe just one? One where you remember both the actor’s name and the character’s name without having to look up the drama? (just to help narrow it down perhaps)

      4
      1

        Ok let me try then:

Ho-im and Seo-kyung (Live Up to Your Name) Kim Nam-Gil and Kim Jong-ah

Ja-eun and Tae-hee (Ojakgyo Brothers) UEE and Joo Won

Jin-woo and Mo-eun (Tell Me That You Love Me) Jin Woo-sung and Shin Hye-bin (is that her real name?)

Eun-seob and Hye-son (When the Weather is Fine) Kang Tae-Joo ? (Can’t recall the exact name of the actor) but normally can and Park Min-young

Kang Dan-o and … (Romance is a bonus book (Lee Na-hye and Lee Jong-suk)

Da-li and … (Dali and the Cocky Prince) Park Gyu-young and Kim Min-jae

        Dalmi and Han Ji-pyeong (Start-up) Suzy and Kim Seon-ho 😍😍😍 (I really can’t recall NJH’s character’s name)

Kang and Cha-yeon (Chocolate) something Kyu-sang and Cha Ji-won (?)

        3
        2

    Tragic swordsmen:
    Bidam (Queen Seon Deok)
Lee Dae Gil (The Slave Hunters)
    Gu Dong Mae (Mr. Sunshine)
Ddang Sae/ Lee Bang Ji (Six Flying Dragons)

So messed up, but so memorable!

    3
    1

Hmm… More than liking Gu Dong Mae, I love the bromance of the three male leads in the drama and how they play with each other 😂😂😂

      2
      0

Off the top of my head?

Chief Kim [Namgoong Min] in “Chief Kim”
Cheong Seong Yi [Jeon Ji Hyun] in “My Love From Another Star”
Ji-Sung in “Kill Me Heal Me” (because all 7 are my favorite)

After looking at MyDramaList for their names:
Lee Kang Du [Won Jin Ah] and Ha Moon Soo [Jun Ho] in “Just Between Lovers”
Kang Hye Soo [UEE] in “Marriage Contract”
Yoon Na Mu [Jang Ki Yong] in “Come and Hug Me”
Lee Jae Han [Jo Jin Woong] in “Signal”
Kim Je Hyuk [Park Hae Soo] in “Prison Playbook”

🏆 There are no bad reasons to watch dramas! Are you willing to tell us what it was?

    10
    1

      That’s exactly my embarrassment 🥹

If it was for a great drama like Goblin or Stranger (which I totally binged in 2 days 3weeks to my exams. NO REGRETS here), I will be loud and proud of myself.

…. It was for From Now on Showtime 😩
And average drama at best. Well, I’ll just crawl back into my thinking cave, thank you (because bear, get it? Too much? I’ll stop now 🥹🥹)

      4

As far as I’m concerned, many here liked that show! Actually, it is in my list of good shows to watch, so no embarrassment there! Actually, everybody likes different things, and many shows that I. Or others like don’t receive positive reviews from Beanies either. But to each their own, they’d say.

I was one of the beanies who liked it though I felt the finale to be lame. So agree with @mmmmm If anything in DB we don’t judge beanies on their choice of drama.

Yes as @seeker said I LOVED this drama!! I loved its joy, its sweetness, its focus on love and forgiveness, and its sweet, sweet ending ❤️

        2

I used to read books like that … even Agatha Christie ones. 🤣

    5
    2

You are like my mother! My mom always look at the ending first, and if she likes it, she will read it from the beginning. I just don’t understand this. 😅

      5
      2

Agatha Christie murder mysteries were one of my coping mechanisms during the last throes of my PhD, and I would absolutely look up who the murderer was at least a good 35% of the time. It makes it fun to find the clues, ensures you don’t start liking the bad guy too much (usually), and removes the stress from the read. 10/10 good strategy.

      5
      3

Wow, this is new to me, but it also sounds good! Thanks for sharing your tip about reading mystery-thriller books.

        4
        1

Wow that’s so cool @jls943!! I think there’s something comforting about Agatha Christie, even if her books are about murder, because there’s a strong sense of formula (the comfort of the familiar), and we know that good will prevail (the comfort of justice). Fortunately, by the end of my PhD I had dramas for comforting escapism, but Christie is such a good strategy – especially when removing the stress of an unknown culprit!!

        3
        2

Yes, the formula, definitely! I grew up with murder mysteries and whodunits because my dad has always loved them, so there is almost always something weirdly comforting to me about them, but especially Agatha Christie. I also mainly listened to the audiobook versions, and the same couple of people read most of them, so that was another source of stability and comfort when I really needed it.

          2
          0

@jls943 that’s such a cool memory and association you have for her books!! And the rhythm of the right narrator can be SO soothing. I love listening to P.G. Wodehouse books on tape narrated by the same person – I love his voice!! 😊

          3
          0

What should be wrong with that? I suppose you also watched it because it was good – at least I hope that for you.

Hi Beanies.

Join me as we plead with the drama gods for good (read as memorable) dramas this year. I\’m tired 😩

My favorite dramas of all time list has not changed since 2020. Help!!!

7
12

I join you in earnest prayer! But I think your list not changing is not a bad thing. It means you are a loyalist 🙂. I am discovering old dramas myself these days. And they are SOOO worth it even today. I think it’s okay to watch/ like/ finish dramas sparingly. It keeps you from becoming jaded 🙂.

    5
    1

I respect this, a good outlook on things this is 🤔

I’m being watching dramas since 2013, thankfully I’m not jaded yet although some dramas have tried (looking at you Blood 🥴)

      1

My all time favourite Chinese drama is from 2019 (“The Untamed”) and I have 2 older all time favourite Kdramas— “Save Your Last Dance for Me” (2004/2005, it aired over the New Year) an “Marriage Contract” (2016)… All is good!! But I feel ya— overall, I only finished 10 dramas in 2023 and dropped 3

    3
    1

    Have you watched The Matchmakers?

Honest opinion about Park’s Marriage… Cute couple, decent actors, needed a better script. I only stayed because the CP worked on me.

Like Flowers In Sand is great so far. If it sticks the landing, it would be a perennial favorite.

I love sageuks and most of my favorites are older dramas. The most recent non-fusion masterpiece I have watched is from 2019.
