Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (June 17, 2023)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: I’m in denial that it’s over. The finale was appropriately and wonderfully outlandish and heartfelt. I loved everything about it, convenient plot devices and all. Like I’ve been saying from the start, the characters were always at the center, and so everything that spun around them was totally fine by me. By the end of the drama I not only loved Lee Dong-wook, Kim Bum, and Kim So-yeon more than ever, but I developed a two-part crush on Moo-young (he was always too warm to be evil) and Jae-yoo, the faithful puppy incarnate. I never say this, but: Season 3, please.

Bloodhounds: I only caught the first episode so far, and I only did it for a) the boxing b) Woo Do-hwan, but honestly the growing rapport between the boys was the highlight for me. The way they played off each other and interacted — from fighting in the ring to chatting at the BBQ restaurant — felt so humorous and so realistic. And so, the entire episode became enjoyable, because watching those two banter and switch levels of speech and discuss their training hacks left me having way more fun than I expected.

Currently covering: Delightfully Deceitful

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: So many things in the finale didn’t make sense, and I don’t care — this show was a blast from start to finish, I’m glad everyone got their happy endings, and I can’t wait for Season 3. That said, I did have to create my own rationalization for how in the world all the changes in the past didn’t impact the future at all. So until and unless Season 3 tells me otherwise, my interpretation is that the two timelines split off into two separate universes, one where Season 1 happened and one where it wasn’t necessary because Rang and Yeon (and the other mountain gods) stayed friends.

Unit

The Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: An absolutely crack-tastic watch! Loved every minute of the wild ride, and I’m having massive withdrawal symptoms. I’m tempted to check out the first season for more of the bromance of the fox brothers, but I don’t think I can handle seeing Rang die.

Happiness Battle: I honestly can’t tell why I’m still watching this, but I tune in each week.

Sunbae, Don’t Put on That Lipstick: Aside from the drama’s failed attempt at an English title (She Would Never Know… Never know what??) I enjoyed watching this. Loved the office dynamics, the OTP’s romance (that height difference!!), and the healthy sibling relationship between the male lead and his sisters. The drama also gets bonus points for having such a beautiful poster and a vibrant color palette.

One week without a K-drama watch. I found most current Korean variety shows overly repetitive (which may be the reason their overall ratings are in decline.)

THE MAXX (1995): This MTV “Oddities” series started mainstream acceptance of many stylish adult animations. THE MAXX was a graphic novel style anime with a gritty, psychological, and mysterious story line. It still works as the story reveals itself like onion peeling one layer at a time. The animation story board style is outdated by modern technology but it still retains a nostalgic vibe.

STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS (Season 1/Ep 1): After Roddenberry helmed series, the spin-offs have been hit or miss, but mostly disappointing to core fans (which I am one.) Paramount released the first full season of this prequel series for free as a bridge new viewers to the second season. Well, after the pilot episode, I am not going along for the ride. The story was not engaging, the acting was stiff and the dialog terrible. I don’t like how the show runners try to unnecessarily force younger versions of iconic characters on us.

It's finally King the Land and See You in My 19th Life day 🥳💃!

COMPLETED
Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 - Would never have said this before S2 but I'd actually love a S3 as long as we get more of Hong-joo and the fox brothers.

ONGOING
My Perfect Stranger - I'm really curious whether this will stick the landing with a satisfactory, plot-hole free ending 🤔.

Delightfully Deceitful - Slightly more interested in these characters now.

C-DRAMAS
Completed Here We Meet Again. Lots of cute and funny moments. Could have done with fewer misunderstandings. Vin Zhang is 🔥.

All caught up with The Youth Memories and will complete it this weekend.

Planning to watch the slew of new dramas starting this week - Destined, Hidden Love, and Snow Eagle Lord.

Sound Candy
The picture quality seems really hazy. I thought I needed an appointment at the opticians but I assume it’s intentional as the focus is on sound not vision.

The girl downstairs - anime Chinese
Watching in prep for Korean live action version due out later this year. The pictures used for the end credits are really nice and I prefer that style to the styling of the anime.

Romance by romance

Race
Loved it, drama of 2023 for me.

Oh! Youngshim

Pegasus market
Loved it. Really fun watch.

Miracle: Letter to the president Korean film 2021
Based on a true story where villagers campaign for a train station because the only way to get to town is to walk on the active train line. The danger comes from the tunnels, and bridges over the river because there is no where for them to stand safely when unscheduled freight trains come through. Really sad in parts but has a positive outcome and a love story family rebuilding element. The actor playing the teen genius was 34 when it released and unlike the pretty boys really did look like a man reminded me of the man in Thirty but 17.

Il Mare Korean Film picture quality was not good 2000
A beautiful fantasy romance of two people communicating via letters even though they exist in two different eras two years apart.

Nervous conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga a coming of age tale covering gender, class and cultural identity set in late 1960 before Zimbabwe got its new name.

For some random reason I thought this was a really old drama but it wasn't and now I see it as the Good manager the retail edition. The way they deal with the corruption and tackling supporting the community and various staff needs was brilliant. I preferred it to Gaus electronics and I enjoyed that a lot at the time. It was also a bonus when I discovered the male lead was the forgotten male from Reply 1988 as I had not registered seeing him in anything since then.

CRICKET - Summer - Test Cricket

World Test Championship - Australia won - bad batting one more time from indian batsman - good pitch

A S H E S - oh yeah - what nice start - flat pitches won't do - clouds and rainy days make match fun but pitch need to have something for bowlers too, especially these new duke balls are even more bat friendly

JOE ROOT - fab 4 - 10 100s behind -within 15 months has more 100s than 2 and same as smith - what a majestic run this has been for root.

JIMMY - 40 - still doing medium fast - fast bowling puts so much pressure on body - so 20 years test bowling - is a huge huge achievement

i only provide information from official profiles whether sns or video media platform -

BAZBALL - it's not vibes - it's not ODI run rate in test cricket - because Australian team at top usually score 3.75-4.25 in test cricket - 2005 Ashes - both teams were scoring more than 4. Ashes in enland hv days when runs come freely n fast - look at 2007 - look at all ashes happening in australia

BAZBALL - be no fear - take decisions with confidence - be daring but not be a fool.
1st test - 1st day - 1st ball - 4 runs - 1st day declare - is daring with confidence.

one loss, one defeat in ashes will be the real test of bazball

Australians tried to test patience of England with wide field - good strategy but it also question your character

Ahh - TEST CRICKet the real cricket is now up - i won' hv much time for anything except JUN HO

The Way You Are (Taiwan)
This feels like a good old melo including Family Tragedy and Loan Sharks and Heroine becoming poor and turning into a Candy (on a scooter). Caring Hero has a trauma, of course, and coincidentally meets Heroine, a lot (=FATE!).

My Marvellous Fable, 3eps
This one is interesting and quite atypical for a cdrama - a meak Hero is hired as an editor to a famous eccentric writer (Heroine). They embark on a long journey to Heroine's hometown (some measly 2000 km) and Heroine starts telling (and Editor taping) her new book during the ride. The first story she tells reminds me of Poe, but there must be also hidden a real snippet of Heroine's past as we later see some of the characters existing in real life. Is it this time the Heroine who has a trauma? 😁

Oh no! Here comes trouble (Taiwan)
I watched the second episode and still don't know whether I like it and/or am in the right mood. Sometimes it's interesting and sometimes I want to drop it, but then there is a moment which totally grabs my heart, like the glimmer of grief in Mom's eyes.

Still continuing with The Real Has Come... and CAN'T WAIT for the new weekend dramas!!! Finally!! 🥳

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D+ / C- / C- / D+ / D+
It’s funny how at one point I was absolutely confident that we had a sequel that was better than its predecessor, but then it all spectacularly imploded as the show inexplicably decided to drag its main narrative arc into a teased third season? Even without the lacklustre Japanese imperialism backdrop, the main characters left much to be desired. Fan service is no story.

Oh! Young-shim (Series review) - Mood progression: D / D / D- / D- / D-
We all wished that this was the show Love is for Suckers ever wanted to be but of course there was only bitterness and disappointment waiting for us. Not even my affection for Lee Min Jae’s developing career could salvage this: it was just nonsense. I guess the one good thing about this show is that it’s only 10 episodes, even if it’s 10 episodes too long.

Delightfully Deceitful (Episode 5-6) - Mood: C-
Of course, everyone and their father are tied to this evil organisation: it wouldn’t be a k-drama otherwise? The writer seems intent on dragging out said connection for the probation officer but especially the psychiatrist in particular: could be one of the biggest payoffs or one of the biggest letdowns, we’ll find out soon enough, if not, the show will start to lose my interest.

My Perfect Stranger (Episode 13-14) - Mood: C+
There has to be some point in showing an angry Yoo Seob especially if they were going to reveal Hae Joon’s dad anyway: it might have to do with Soon Ae’s feelings of betrayal in the future? We assumed she was talking to her killer but maybe not? Anyway, the killer being the person who repaired the time travelling car does complicate things: let’s hope the finale sticks?

Sh**ting Stars -- Finished. This is one of the most ✨️adorable✨️ rom-coms ever, and now my second favorite rom-com! I'm surprised at how much I liked all the secondary and side characters. What a delight to enjoy so many nice people in one drama! It felt like the cast enjoyed themselves, too. One of the things I really appreciated with the writing was how straightforward the main characters were, and that so many things were dealt with head-on by talking them through. Two thumbs up!👍👍The angst felt appropriate to the setting of the story, and it provided depth to what would otherwise have been only saccharine-sweet. And the ending was very sweet. A really enjoyable watching experience!

Bring It On, Ghost -- Finished. I wasn't prepared for how cute the romance is in this! While Taecyeon's ML character initially tries to deny it, he's adorably pleased to have the ghost FL as a roommate and confidante in his lonely life. As icing on the cake, Kang Ki Young's chaotic ghost club bro duo is hilarious. The self-defense and karaoke scenes in ep. 14 were GOLD. Can Kang Ki Young just be in everything?? (*Disclaimer: I used FF through all the murdery stuff and anything else too scary for me, which was roughly 30-40% of the drama, and this affected how cute I found this - i.e., very*).

Dealing with Call it Love withdrawals by listening to the OST on repeat (still upset that D+ REFUSES TO RELEASE instrumental OSTs 😠). Excited to start See You In My 19th Life and King the Land!!!! WOO!

C-dramas --
Sword Snow Stride: Finished. Wow, what a cool show. The ML is a fantastic character; complex and nuanced. When he's pushed into making a choice, he asks, why not both - or neither? The final battle that brings all his awesome siblings together is great. While set up for a second season that will likely never happen, it's still satisfying. Also, I don't think it was dubbed? I highly recommend if you're up for a martial arts/wuxia drama.
Back From the Brink: Ongoing. Oh my goodness, I'm really enjoying the dynamic between our steady, stoic, earnest dragon, and his feisty FL. He's more wise and she's more street-smart, but they're both endearingly naive. It's cheesy in the best possible way.

I hope you like it if you try it!! The politics part (beaurocracy and petty corruption) felt more realistic to me than some dramas, but the cute romance and quirky comedy stay strong throughout!! The politics part is really just the playground for the characters to shine.

2

I don't like dramas about politics (well, I try to avoid them), but "Into the ring" is so funny and the characters so endearing that I really enjoyed it.

5

The politics is more like local politics in a small city, whichI feel like is more interesting and satirical in an almost mundane, but quirky slice-of-life way.

2

I tried Into The Ring, but the politics proved too much. With your comments, I'll give it another go.

4

Based on all the good things I’d read about it, I gave it a try, but couldn’t even get through the first episode. For me it was the sitcom vibe, not the politics. I’ve dropped quite a few shows for the same reason, including the much-beloved Gaus Electronics. Not my cup of tea at all.

4

@babylilo I know it’s hard to get what everyone sees in some dramas and when you have to work to get through the first episode it can feel like it’s best to drop. I have tried different approaches some, I slog through and it was worth it because it got better within the 4 episode grace period, some I dropped and watched months later and some I just follow the weecaps.

4

it's about the RELATIONSHIP!!! they are so sweet, he is so sweet, she is so cute and genuine...

I’ve had to put most dramas that I was watching on hold because I’ve started a new course and things are ramping up at work, so when I’m not studying or working, I’m sleeping because my body hasn’t gotten used to this new routine just yet.

Because of that, the only drama I’m currently watching is F4 Thailand (14/16) - which I promise I’ll shut up about eventually, but I really, really, REALLY (really!!) LOVE this show and will hands down recommend it (just trust me!!!) to everyone and anyone, regardless of whether or not you’ve seen the other BoF adaptations. My favourite part of this experience, aside from the stellar drama itself, is the experience of getting used to the rhythm of a new language. I’m not sure how to express this properly or if it sounds stupid, but the process of understanding the tones, sound and musicality (is that a word?) of a new language just makes my brain tingle. It’s like going to a new country and learning how to orient yourself and understand the vibe and feel of the place, and that whole process just stimulates your brain in a good way - or at least it does for me. Thai isn’t a language that I’ve heard often around me and the only other Thai media I’ve consumed is a movie (Crazy Thing Called Love - get on it & watch if you haven’t already!!), so I’ve really liked this process of slowly becoming acclimatised to the flow and expression of Thai (I also really like the way the language sounds, it’s quite pretty and musical!). I don’t know the technical terms for this because I’m not a linguist or anything close, but yes I just really like hearing new languages and understanding their unique forms of expression in the sound and rhythm, and being able to do that through this drama has been a really refreshing and enjoyable experience!

I wish I had the superpower to just learn languages in an instant though - every time I hear a new language for the first time, I fall in love with some aspect of it and wish I could learn it instantaneously but then I’m too lazy to put in the effort. BUT in saying that, I have actively been trying to learn Korean for a while now, trying my best to not give up when things get a little hard, and it’s been going pretty good so far! So if I can reach this goal, it’ll give me some confidence for other languages too!

That's such a cool way to describe becoming familiar with the sounds of a new language!!! I started using apps to learn Korean last year... it's very slow going, but rewarding. I realized that since I'm familiar with the sounds of the language because of watching dramas since 2018, it feels easier, even if I'm not making lots of progress!😁

It really does feel easier to pick up when you've been immersed in listening to it for ages (and therefore are familiar with the sounds)!! For me, compared to learning French in a very academic way in school, listening and repeating to just Korean dialogue even taught me a lot more and was easier to pick up. I came to the most dumb lightbulb moment of 'ohhh is this how children learn languages initially? listening, memorising, repeating??' though in the process of learning Korean this way 😂

A virtual high-five with your Korean learning efforts too 🙌I'm cheering for both of us to achieve our language learning goals - go team!!!

I love how you've described that experience of trying to catch the rhythm of a new language! I also started watching F4 Thailand this week, thanks to fellow beanie recommendations. They've done a great job of dialing down some of the more annoying aspects of previous versions and just sticking to the meat of the story. It really makes the characters feel more dimensional, and not just manga replications.

Hahaha we're twinning! I hope you enjoy the drama, would love to hear your thoughts at the end when you're done! I agree v much with what you said about this version dialling down on the annoying bits, sticking to the heart of the story and giving the characters more dimension - I'm kind of impressed that they did all this and still kept in some of that manga feel to it with certain aspects. I'm always a fan when an adaptation plays around with creative choices and changes but doesn't loose the essence of the original story - I feel like it's v much a sign of a production team that not only did their homework but really understood the story and was clear about their vision going forward.

"I feel like it's v much a sign of a production team that not only did their homework but really understood the story and was clear about their vision going forward." - Yes, that's exactly it. You can tell they respect the original material, but found their own way to tell the story.

I'm stuck on episode 14 right now. We have kids and grandkids in town visiting, and it's tons of fun, but I haven't had much time for drama watching. I'll definitely check in with my final thoughts!

I'm watching all the behind the scenes and 'making of' content right now and hearing the director talk about how much work they put in and how they approached the story & the actors talking about their process and method, is really reinforcing that point about just how much careful consideration and thought went in to this.

And ep 14 honestly a good point to 'pause' I think, then you can enjoy the final two episodes properly! I was initially drip-feeding episodes, doing 2 a day, but then I got impatient and binged the final lot back to back, which I kind of wish I hadn't?! 😂 I hope hanging out with kids & the grandkids is going swell and I can't wait to read your overall thoughts soon!

My Perfect Stranger: Goodness, the whodunit really gave us a conundrum. I still kind of think it is his mother, but who knows. I am kind of annoyed they waited until the last two episodes though. That being said I am glad the leads haven't had a kiss, they don't have that kind of chemistry, but I think their slow and warm friendship to romance fits beautifully in the story.

Delightfully Deceitful: It is getting better, but it is still missing a reason. They are trying to make the FL a psychopath, but honestly she just seems focused on revenge to the exclusion of all else. Everyone has betrayed her most of her life, why should she trust anyone. I get it. However, her easy adaption to conning and her 4th wall breaks are still terrible and I want them to stop.

Race: All is well that ends well. I wish the romance had been better though. I think the show stuck the landing in terms of the office part, but gave really short shrift to everything.

King the land: Junho😍😍😍😍.

See you in My 19th life: Shin Hye Sun 😍😍😍😍.

Oh! Youngshim - I wanted something I can turn my head off and watch and that's exactly what this was. It could have been better though. I thought "not to compete is to compete". O! Y didn't even bother to be anything, just waltzing through everything as they pleased.
Moon Woo-jin's cameo = something I liked in the finale.

Tale of the Nine Tailed : Had Rang be left without his loml, I'm come to the network armed with "pitchforks and tears".
I'm scratching my head around everything Moo-young and I'll just leave it be.

My Perfect Stranger : I like it when there are checks and balances, or when there exists an external influence holding a body of government *fondly remembering why I watched Undercover* or corporation accountable. I'll watch anything having that premise. MPS did that this week with the press forcing the police to be accountable.
Yeon-woo being the culprit is equal to Swiss cheese so imma simply wait. Monday is not far away anymore.

Delightfully Deceitful Ep 4: Here I was, worried for Moo-young. Alas! Mr. Moo-young has it under control.
Bonus point - a Moo-young I can root for.

Happiness Battle Ep 5: So they were sisters by marriage. Wow! Just wow!
I like that Mi-ho doesn't give a damn to the moms. But her subordinate really needs to dial things down a notch.
Sowon-omma gives me more eerie vibes than all the other moms.
Someone get Lee Kyu-han back into the story as soon as possible.

I'll be critically deciding whether to jump on King the Land's ship while counting down to See You in My 19th Life.

On a beanie's fanwall mention, I checked out Il Maré. It was a gripping watch. And, Lee Jung-jae looked really good in his younger years.

Rewatched :

Kiss Sixth Sense Ep 5-12: I was only going to watch snippets here and there but ended up watching it scene by scene, episode by episode. That last episode remains chaotic even though it's a rewatch.
The ending though. Did she regain her ability after that final kiss? Her eyes and countenance changed immediately they kissed and that's where the show thought to draw the curtain. I'm left guessing whether or not she gained hers back.

Monthly Magazine Home Ep 8 : That mid-season kiss. "I'm glad. Thank you for being home". How much I must have missed that line.

This one is not a rewatch. I had unordered snippets of Seo Hyun-Jin in You Are My Spring and used that time to sneak at Kim Dong-wook. That dance to Leslie Cheung's piece doesn't fail to get me giddy anytime. And, thier break-up was sad to watch.

Past Projects:

Family : The Unbreakable Bond : I don't know where this should be since it only recently it aired. The subs after ep 2 were perfect, so it wasn't so bad after all. I think the initial subs made me think the writing and direction was haphazard. Big thanks to those who subbed it into English.
Every other thing was perfect.
One pet peeve though. Did they really have to kill Kim Nam-hae's character. My...

...personal bias, plus I really grew fond of his character. The way he bonded with Jangs Hyuk and Nara's kid was totally reminiscent of a father. And to think they did that on his way after visiting his daughters ashes...I'm not forgiving you show.

Grid Ep 8-10 : Finally. Finally I completed this drama. While watching this one live before I tapped out(I followed with the recaps to the end though), I called it a complex convoluted watch at the end. It still is a complex watch, but not so convoluted as I thought it was then. I hope it has a second season in the works cause I'll be sitting in once again. Besides, that ending must mean something right?
About the AB building getting blown up, I had no issue with it. They had it coming. They hurt my Sae-ha and they were gonna pay. But, Eo-jin, Chae Jong-yi and Security guy Han Wi-han(what a nice name play) were in the building as at when it blew. I guess they became collateral damage in top management's schemings.
That thing about Sae-byuk being a maternal ancestor to Ghost has me at wow! like wow!
Plus point - A Yoo Jae-myung cameo🤭
Major plus point : Kim Man-ok was played by Kim Sung-kyun. Good thing I watched Divorce Attorney first before completing Grid cause he'd have gone undetected on my radar. Didn't have much lines but was one helluva headache for the Administration Bureau.

I'm thinking of picking up Apple TV's Dr. Brain, and Hometown for my next past projects. Hometown starring Yoo Jae-myung, Han Ye-ri and Uhm Tae-gu, not Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha.

FIGHT MY WAY (Ep 1)
So seeing this drama popping up on dramabeans lately made me curious to rewatch it. Gotta say so far it still holds up, but lol after recently watching BO-RA! DEBORAH where we actually see a normal(ish) timeline of a breakup, FIGHT MY WAY is definitely on steroids.

Not only do we see our FL being cheated on, we find out her cheater boyfriend and the ‘other woman' are expecting. This is peak kdrama and I’m loving every minute of it! Obviously if not for the comedy this would be sad, but hey the show doesn’t let you linger or even let you think, in the next scene our FL is getting pats from our ML so yeah all good I suppose 😉

TALE OF THE NINE TAILED (Ep 12-16) & TALE OF THE NINE TAILED 1938 (Ep 9-12)
The difference between the ending of S1 and S2 is astounding. I had to force myself to finish S1, it shouldn’t have been 16 episodes and the final episode dragged, the fact it was 80mins didn’t help.

So yeah I was a little concerned when I saw the final episode of S2 being around the same length. But oh boy was I wrong! It was such rollicking good fun and I smiled so much it physically hurt! I don’t know how they created this magic and I’m not even sure if this can be replicated for S3 but everything just worked. Yes there are plot holes and inconsistencies but none of it matters, the characters are iconic and have great chemistry, the story is super super fun and it’s fucking gorgeous and very aesthetically pleasing okay?

I mean the scene where Rang goes full fox mode is a sight to see, Kim Bum being sexy as hell and imo overtaking Lee Jae-wook’s performance in ALCHEMY Of SOULS S2. I’m just gonna say it TOTNT1938 far exceeds AoS S2 and is in my top 2 kdramas so far this year.

Yeon being Yeon is also by far one of my favourite things, he is charming and very very sly. Honestly, Yeon being a free agent in S2 really gave him the depth and complexity that was missing in S1. Sorry but the whole fated romance didn’t work for me and weakened the more compelling aspects of Yeon.

Hong-joo is perfect and I have nothing else to add other than Kim So-yeon was a standout and that’s a feat considering everyone else was also amazing!

Rounding out our trio, I would be remiss to not mention Moo-young, a softie who has no problem killing but he really is a softie and I say this with no sarcasm

Anyway thanks TALE OF THE NINE TAILED 1938! You were a blast!

Yeon being blunt, then exasperated then cute, he has a vibe thats like ... he is super annoyed yet super into living. everything is too much and... i think it was bc there was no mint ice cream. cause if i think about it, there were withdrawal symptoms in Future Yeons' impatience and hastiness. even tho past Yeon was the opium addict.... no mint ice cream = he wants to spend more yime with Rang, but he doesnt want to be there.
Yeon would also make a great school teacher. he can shut people up in one sentence. and him beig super annoyed and eye rolling his pastself LOL.
i can see where it comes from. the whole world is too much but you got no choice.

Delightfully Deceitful: Getting the backstory now and wow, the title is waaay off the mark. Anyways, the hour always goes by fast when I'm watching this and it has been entertaining and riveting. And I set a higher bar when I have to seek a drama out from unofficial streaming source. I'm enjoying the heck out of this.

Back from the Brink (cdrama, up to episode 36): The journey is almost over. That really flew right by. 36 episodes in and it is holding together really well as an action adventure fantasy romance. I feel like this is a case where the sum is greater than its parts.

To Ship Someone (cdrama binge up to ep 15): I think this works better as a binge with a bit of FF-ing as the FL can be irritating sometimes. The drama is riding a nice tension between supporting the need to give it your all to and recognizing that sometimes things don't work out. I really enjoy the meta references to the cliches in the fictional world while the leads' "real" world is also chock full of cliches.

I'm behind on The Real Has Come, so will be catching up on it today and more binging for the long weekend.

I'm feeling tempted to pick up Tale of the Nine-tailed 1938 after feeling sort of blah about the first season. Sounds like it's a lot more fun!

Current/recent:
My Perfect Stranger: It’s frustrating that we can’t yet see the future effects of all this 1987 mucking about. I’d prefer a time-travel plot with more time travel. Hae-joon’s dad seemed suspicious from the start. Did his mom disappear because she traveled forward in time, and stayed there? Or was she kidnapped to 2021 (by Dad?) and killed there?
Divorce Attorney Shin: I clicked ‘play’ on this accidentally - fumblefingers on the TV remote - and to my surprise I liked it enough to keep going. I expected to hate the drunken trot singing, but (maybe it’s the pain meds) it made me laugh instead. I paid no attention to the cases other than the first and last, just enjoyed the characters and the bro banter. “Talk to me in emojis if you find Korean too hard.” 😆
King the Land and See You in My 19th Life: starting these right after breakfast.

Older stuff:
Eun-joo’s Room: Pleasant enough, but a bit underpowered.
Nine: Nine Time Travels: Finished this and loved it. Not that it’s perfect, but the central time-travel conceit, which is my catnip, very nearly is.

Giant: I'm at the end of this on episode 57. Now I have to decide on what to watch after this. So much withdrawal and transition issues after long dramas! This has been a really good watch for me. I feel like it sets the stage for a greater understanding of so many drama themes---particularly something I see in historical dramas all the time which is the theme of good governance and "working for the people".

Honestly, I'm just waiting for KTL and SYIM19L to drop. And is there a better shorthand than SYIM19L? It's longer than some full drama names.
Race a really solid drama with a somewhat underwhelming end. I know Disney frustrates a lot of folks, but if you like plucky heroines and slice-of-life office dramas, solid friendships and slow burn friends to lovers arcs, I'd recommend a watch. One of the better ones this year.
My Perfect Stranger Oh, that mystery plot twist was good. I have no idea how they're going to resolve this satisfactorily. Romance continues to be lame, much to the lament of my KDW-loving heart.
I tried watching Shopping King Louis. I read old Beanie rave reviews, but I just wanted to tell the FL to run girl. Otherwise you'll end up spending half your life like Dr Cha taking care of this man-child.
Now, back to the wait.

In the “Other Language” thread someone mentioned not only does Teo Yoo speak English well, he can actually act in it.
I’ve loved the sound of many actors in kdramas but I know I’m missing an essential part of their performance by reading their dialogues, not hearing them. So another reason I want to see this is to gain the full experience of his performance.

FYI, Yoo Teo’s character in this is 100% Korean and he speaks very little English. It was super interesting hearing him speak accented English in this after his perfect English in Love to Hate You!

The movie was super good, everyone in my theater really enjoyed it and got pretty emotional. I’m glad I live near one of the largest US cities and was able to see it!

@mindy Oh dang. I thought they picked him for his English.

But glad to hear the positive review. Will wait till it's available globally.

I wonder if I'd watched SKL the 7 (8?) years ago when it came out, would I have recognized what @hopefulromantic called the emotional immaturity of the characters, esp. the ML. Or is it that times have changed and women are less likely to accept that behavior?

I think dramas of certain eras have tropes that don’t carry as well as others. But if you watch a batch of them at the same time you can get acclimatised. It doesn’t make it more acceptable it just makes it easier to see beyond the annoying. However, we all have certain traits we can’t handle. For me it’s the mother in law who demands the lead comes over and then subjects them to, it is usually the female lead, outrageous levels of emotional abuse before trying to buy them off etc. The fact the lead does not either refuse to go or tell their partner about it straight away drives me mad.

In defense of SKL, you can't really blame Louis for his immaturity, as he was raised in an environment totally sheltered from the real world. He seemed to grow up a bit over the course of the series once he left his grandmother's cocoon. And I cut Louis some additional slack because... Seo In-Guk!

Finished Fight For My Way. Solid drama, great acting all around. Did FF through some of the second couple’s scenes but loved the main romance. PSJ knocked it out of the park AGAIN. I did get a bit frustrated when Ae Ra forced him to choose between her and his dream, but then again I could understand where she was coming from.

Started The King: Eternal Monarch. This is one of those dramas where I think I’mma have to see for myself.
Episode 1 - I am SO CONFUSED.
Episode 2 - Dude. A bit too soon to be proposing.
Episode 3 - I am still SO CONFUSED.

Spoilers Ahead.

Back from the Brink
Overall I’m of two minds about this drama: on one hand, I couldn’t help comparing it to the novel and I found areas of the drama lacking. On the other hand, I also couldn’t help loving the drama to bits in spite of its flaws. I don’t mind when a drama deviates from a novel if the deviations make sense, but I feel the drama would’ve been more solid with a few tweaks.

What I liked: Adored Neo Hou as Tian Yao. Took a while for Zhou Ye to grow on me, but she did. Liked all of the side characters, especially the phantom spirit queen - her counterpart in the novel was irritating. While I prefer the ultimate big bad from the novel, I didn’t mind the changes in the drama in that regard. I also appreciate that Su Ying and Fu Yin were not given redemption arcs and died unrepentant.

What I didn’t like: Like most viewers, I disliked the out-of-character behavior of Tian Yau in episode 16 and thought it was just a cheap plot device used to extend the drama. And like most others, I didn’t care for Bai Xiao Shengs’s sudden infatuation for Yan Hui; it felt forced.

A minor gripe is that the story of Su Ying and Mu Sheng was handled better in the novel. In the novel, the two were a couple many years ago. When she found his reincarnation, he was a scholar and already married to the nine-tailed fox princess (and knew what she was). That’s when Su Ying becomes obsessed. The drama failed to provide an explanation for their separation and Mu Sheng losing his memories and marrying someone else. I wish the drama hadn’t changed their story, but since they did, there needed to be some kind of dialogue or flashback or something to explain what happened between them.

It sounds like I didn’t like the drama but I enjoyed it a lot. I just see where it could’ve been better, and that makes me a bit sad.

Find Yourself
Spent too much time annoyed with the SML. To be honest, at times he was funny and had chemistry with the FL, and I did like his relationship with his niece. But let me expose my hypocritical self here…when it’s the ML acting this way to win the FL from another guy, I totally root for him 😅 I think the main issue I had with the SML was that I just wanted more Song Wei Long 😏

I appreciate that the drama tried to give a comparison to the main noona romance by pairing up the FL’s brother and Esther Yu’s character, and while I could...

The second male lead was out of order playing mind games with the female lead because he knew she was inexperienced in relationships and she genuinely trusted him and his judgement. That made me dislike him immensely. The female lead’s brother’s attitude towards his girlfriends when he was ready to end the relationships was also trashy especially as he knew about women having been part of his sister’s friendship group for years. He had been out of order disrupting his sister’s love life when they were younger so again was annoying as his love life was fine during that time.

.....and while I could totally buy into Esther Yu’s crush on her professor, I saw no change in him to make me believe he suddenly liked her enough to risk his career and reputation (and hers) in order to date her. It seemed that he suggested dating secretly because he didn’t think she would agree, not because he actually liked her. I never did buy into his supposed feelings for her. He found her cute, yes, but I couldn’t tell that there was any attraction to her; however, I wonder if that may have been deliberate on the director’s part because of Esther Yu’s age at the time.

This week was a low week for dramas. Foxy ended and nothing excited me after that. Dropped almost most new dramas I tried.

The Way you Shine (twdrama) : Tropey yet had me interested. A devastated FL, divorced by husband, traumatized male lead, nice SML but is somehow linked to FL devastations etc etc. I will be continuing. I hope the ML grows on me. This is the first time I am seeing him.

Love is Sweet (cdrama) : I just watched for the leads Leo and Bai Lu had great chemistry. I FF-Ed the workplace details. I dropped once the noble idiocy started to show its ugly head. Still an entertaining watch just for the leads.

Long Night (cdrama) : Great start. Paused at Ep 3. Will continue.

Will be starting two dramas today as the rest of the folks here.

I liked the earlier episodes of Bloodhounds. I think the boxing scenes were very impressive. I expected the show to be brutal (and I thought I can handle gory just fine), but it was hard for me to continue by episode 6. The thought of our good bad guys and haraboji in looming danger gives a heavy feeling. It is stressing me out, but I’m just 2 episodes away, so might as well endure it and finish it (after pausing for a break every now and then for a brighter drama).

Hot Stove League - My stress reliever from Bloodhounds! I am so happy I started this drama right after finishing Misaeng. It saved me from a drama slump. It is sooo good! And I’m not even a baseball fan. (Heck, I’m just learning the basics of baseball as I watch this show.) Another drama added to my favorite list.

Dr Romantic S3
I haven’t seen the final episodes yet, but we are building up for a grand finale. I’m already sad to let go of this drama and have to remind myself that I can rewatch any drama anytime!
My Perfect Stranger
The bets are on: is the currently teased culprit really the murderer? I don’t think so…
Finished Race
The most realistic office life I’ve seen in a drama, and the best thing about it was that it was centered around women. The romance was lukewarm for all the pairings… sealing being a couple with a handshake? And being a couple consisted in going out to eat or for walks a couple of times? Well, all of these people put their career way before their personal life and relationships, so I guess that’s fitting.
Bloodhounds
This was different from my expectations (sports/boxing), and I enjoyed it more for that. The bromance was wonderful to watch! Small complaints: again, the revenge was way too easy in the end, and the happy ending was cut too short.
Finished 25, 21
Since I was prepared for the ending, I didn’t mind it at all and actually could enjoy it. My favorite things in this drama were the girls’ friendship, the OST and fencing.
KDrama friend project:
Finished Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 - that finale had way too much of everything, that would have been enough for 4 episodes! But sooo much fun… even without BTS clips or the actor’s social media, it was tangible how much everyone enjoyed filming this show. Manifesting a season 3!! Besides that, we watched lots of BTS content since it’s their 10th anniversary this week, so we had no time for other dramas.

Love it. I will tag you into a fan wall post so you can say why. That way we can have a full chat without putting spoilers in this thread. I need to know if the same things wound you up as much as they did me. I will say on here as I say everywhere the mistake of adding two country and western songs on the OST will not be forgiven.

One Spring Night was supposed to be better so if you didn’t like that one its probably best to back away quietly and then sprint off in the other direction.

I liked One Spring Night but wholeheartedly agree with @reply1988 that if you didn't, you should run away from SITR like your socks are on fire.

5

I didn't like the time share element, where she had not properly accepted her dry relationship was over from her perspective before acknowledging that something was in the air with the next man. They were two separate issues and I don't like it when there is unnecessary overhang leading to messiness and often hurt. The dumped person thinks it is connected with the new person when it was over long before the new person was on the scene.

3

I think I'm in the minority of people who didn't like One Spring Night, which I watched after Something in the Rain. I found the FL insufferable.

3

Hahaha… your description of SitR is savage. I think I’ve only watched it until the hand holding under the table scene. I don’t know… I didn’t feel anything so I did not continue. There were times I thought I should try to pick up again, but then I could not. Your comment tells me my lack of will to continue is right.

SITR holds a special place in my heart. It was my gateway into dramaworld, which until then I just didn't get. But, oh that crackly chemistry in the first half, swoon, I was sold. And then, to borrow from a better writer, things fell apart.

Only later did I understand it was a much more complex drama as @kurama stated. It's just that the show was too successful in selling the giddy romance that many felt ambushed by what came next even tho in rewatches you can see the writers trying to lay the groundwork. And that ending... Oof.

So I loved and hated it both, a lot. I wish I'd live-watched it with the Beanie community. But I only saw it last year.

I still watch the early episodes now and then, and pretend the second half didn't happen.

TALE OF THE NINE-TAILED 1938 was far better than I would have expected. My wife loved it. She is a big fan of nine-tailed foxes and mermaids so the writers definitely catered to her tastes with this one.

This week saw me hang in there and complete my watch of OH! YOUNG-SHIN. I am not quite sure why I did so other than that many other dramas simply did not appeal to me right now, which should change with the start of SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE and KING THE LAND. Both start today! (that is worth at least a Yippee)

Fortunately, I have a weekender to watch as a continuing part of my drama life. Last week’s episodes of THE REAL HAS COME had some surprises. Whoever would have expected to see our FL and her older sister in law crying in each other’s arms? What a delight seeing our 2FL suddenly out of balance with the reappearance of the 2ML. This Weekender does not lack for intertwining plotlines- if anything there are so many that some of our potential side romances, like the story of Macknae and the Young Father, are getting only a little screen time right now. When tonight’s episode ends we will be at exactly the halfway point for this drama and it will be interesting to see where things stand then.

I have also been watching the daily APPLE OF MY EYE. So far it is a pleasant watch.

My wife completed her recovery from the Chinese Costume fantasy TILL THE END OF THE MOON by starting the Chinese Historical Costume drama RUYI’S ROYAL LOVE IN THE PALACE. This is a serious undertaking in itself- it has 87 episodes. She has watched long costume dramas before so that does not necessarily faze her and so far, already twenty plus episodes in (in two days) she says it is really good. She was not quite ready to start a fantasy again so a historical drama is a good alternative. She is watching it on Amazon Prime, but it can also be found on Viki. It may be a struggle to tear her away to watch SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE and KING THE LAND with me.

RUYI’S ROYAL LOVE IN THE PALACE is a brilliant drama but the poor woman endures too much so it’s a real rollercoaster ride of emotions. I really enjoyed it and because it’s one of my early Chinese historical drama it holds a special place alongside Eternal love. I am surprised with your wife’s extensive watch list she didn’t have it on the watched already list as it is an older one. I think I saw it on Prime.

She is now at episode 27 and already has the same feeling that you have about the poor female lead.

This is a show that she has had on her watch list for a long time- and is finally getting to. Sometimes that is just the way things go- and in particular with so many Chinese Costume dramas out there to choose from it is little wonder is little wonder that some really good simply languish on the list. Many Beanies had seen both THE UNTAMED and NIRVANA IN FIRE before my wife had (she recommends both very highly).

She is also watching it on Prime. I would note that Prime has apparently made some sort of deal with iQIYI to carry some of their shows so many more of these will be available on Prime in the future. Come time to renew my iQIYI subscription next year I may have to think about whether or not I still need it.

@oldawyer, A recommendation perhaps for your wife.
I have been on hiatus from the current crop of kdramas working in some crime cdramas on iQIYI.
On a lark I tuned into the cdrama comedy AN ACTOR’S RHAPSODY (2023). It is a comedy/spoof on cdrama production that happens to take place on the set of a historical drama.
There are 24 ten minute(ish) episodes so they can be worked in here and there. The set up is that the major and only investor in the project is a young guy (Chen Teng Yue) who has cast himself as the lead. He has total control over the thing and is constantly telling the female screenwriter (his foil) to change story lines. It is wacky but that is the point. Every trope in the book is thrown in. By the end CTY winds up playing 10+ characters. A sort of tour de force performance for the young actor.

My Perfect Stranger This drama could have maintained the suspense until the end! The couple is super cute.

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3 The last episode was very frustrating. The strike didn't make sense, so every character involved made me angry. Protecting their rights? He didn't make them overworked or something like this. He just gave one rule to follow. If they disagreed when he did, they could leave the Trauma Center and switch places with somebody.

Race It was a nice drama. I prefer She Would Never Know from the same PD because the characters had a better evolution but the office part was really interesting in Race.

The Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 It was entertaining and beautiful.

The Good Bad Mother : Overall, it was quite decent for me. It wasn’t a heavy drama though it has some tears jerking moment and the ending was kinda okay too. The best part is the twins for me. They are the only accident that is beautiful ever happened to the lead couple.

Bloodhounds : Characters 8.5/10. I really like the brothers. Both have different personalities and fighting styles yet they complement and supporting each other. Sang Yi with his footwork and fast jab is more calculative and realistic as a person and Do Hwan with his powerful blow is so pure and an idealist but both are brave, selfless and strong they are willing to sacrifice for other people. I’d give the directing 7/10 because the action was good but sports car and ninja bike for tailing? Nah. Also, I think they should have present the 2 main lead stories equally instead of leaning heavier toward WDH’s character. They underplaying LSY’s. I think they could show us more about LSY’s character especially in the action scenes. I really like his style and want to see more of him. The writing? 2/10. Really, if not because the acting and action scenes the story is as holey as donuts. Rich guy with no alarm system in his house? Or gangster attacking cafe and no report to the police by neighbors? Wine after attacking enemy? Jeez. Also I hate the writer for killing half of the team in one episode. I can fully enjoy the drama only after episode 6. Last 2 episodes is the same drama with different genre which I can handle better because of the additional comedy and I know it’s winning time for the heroines. Up until 6 I was having a hard time binge watching because I have low tolerance to suspense and I know some good guys would die. I don’t mind season 2, but can we have different writer, please? Also, who else thinking the sashimi ahjussi is hhoott? He reminds me of Park Hee Soon in My Name.

Delightfully Deceitful : I like how the FL sometimes (or most of the time) is so unpleasant and kinda hard to tolerate. The writer is staying true to the character she created which is a psycopath and don’t justifying or sugar coating the ugly traits the character have like narcissism and lack of emphaty. So far this is a fun ride though this show still not gripping me while it moving forward deeper into the story. As if the drama itself have a big picture of where the story will go or unfold, yet they don’t have clear destination yet. Something is missing.

I also like how the Delightfully Deceitful writer is sticking with creating a character who doesn't have a heroine type of personality. She's is not fighting for justice. I don't think the FL is a psychopath completely lacking empathy either.

I'm looking forward to this drama every week, but since the drama is a bit off-kilter, I feel like it could probably work better as a release-all-the-episodes-at-once thing instead of the traditional weekly release.

I finally finished TILL THE END OF THE MOON and it was a gloriously beautiful ride. Without LYX I've wouldn't have liked it half as much, not even sure if I'd had finished it. He is absolutely magnetic and deserves award upon award for this performance. The FL was by far the biggest problem of the show and if it wasn't for Bai Lu, I'd hate her instead of rolling my eyes at her. But I loved how everything was connected.
Ah! The eyes rolls, the side eyes. The eyeliner. Great make-up artist, that.

THE LOVE YOU GIVE ME is cute and has the cutest little five-year-old spouting way too clever lines for someone his age. I couldn't care less about the side couples but the leads are great together.

CIRCLE OF LOVE: This is nonsensical and I'd never put up with it if it was a regular length drama but the leads have great chemistry.

GRANDMASTER OF DEMONIC CULTIVATION (audio drama): Gaah! The voice actors are incredible. It makes it all worth it having to get up at 5.30.

Viewers wow have a problem with the FL may forgot that she was the ONLY one who witnessed the carnage caused by the ML first hand. Even ML's teacher who later so guided and trusted him so completely only got a glimpse of the damages done by the ML through the FL's memory. With that, the FL was very likely to have PTSD every time the ML did something beyond the realm of the FL's moral compass, such as the time when FL saw the ML absorbing the fox (Pian Ran)'s spirit. With that in mind, plus the fact that the ML schemed to use the FL to kill the SML, how could any rational-think one dare to bet the lives of millions on the mind of 1 unpredictable ML? It is always a question of 1 versus millions. And here the FL chose to sacrificed her life (she though she was going to perish, not knowing that she was go home). Yes, maybe later whe the ML pretend to go to the dark side, the FL could believe his more, but the ML did everything he could to make the FL cut all her emotional tie to become the goddess capable of killing him. The FL finally was ready to die with him saying that without hims, the world no longer needs a goddess. The problem with the drama is that in order to please female viewers, it depicts the ML much much better than the one portrayed in the book (who torture and had borderline necrophile and cannibalism regarding FL) and gave many good deeds done by FL to the ML, which is a pity. Ultimately, I felt more for the FL than the ML as I always feel that the abuse, the misery a person carries is not an excuse for all the wrongdoing he would do, it could serve as mitigating factors, otherwise, why should ordinary people suffer because a person is miserable and in pain?

Required fields are marked *

No, it's not that.

Her reasoning came through quite well and her hate of the future ML was justified. It was that she was so utterly devoid of reason though depicted as wise and so made bad decisions.

The story was the depiction of nature vs nurture and the fact that the ML never turned evil was in spite of everything the FL did, not because of her. That is, unless you count his obsession with her as enough of a distraction to steer him off of greed for power (which he never veered towards in the first place). All she ever did was betray him and subvert his efforts to stay good and doing good. While this might be explained by her hate it doesn't negate the stupidity of it. He was innocent at the time and she failed to understand that.

It doesn't even stand to reason that she was too disgusted by him to pretend at being his love interest, she could very well have matched him up with someone else.

How I wished he'd turn bad just so she would have that lightbulb moment and go "Ah! I and the people around him caused this, not some obscure bone. Karma bites"

Maybe Disney has seen the light? Several unavailable dramas have popped up on Hulu. I’m finally watching Link and they even put Dr. Romantic 3 in progress there. Might even try Family. If Disney could just have a consistent policy about showing kdramas internationally, I would forgive them for buying up so much of the market.

Link is very watchable although it feels so last year to have so much murder and secrets. Pretty sure I have picked out the sister and the friend who told on his dad. Not that it’s hard when there are only so many characters. Not sure what is the point with the stalker’s sister (she seems to manic to really be his sister?) so I’m curious to see where that goes.

I am rewatching BRAIN WORKS and loving it even more this time around.
Apart from the baddy whom I'm completely fast-forwarding, (his scenes are unfortunately very crucial to the story and Haru's storyline so I didn't ff any of it the first watch. But this time I know what is happening and I'm not tolerating that beast again) , most of the leads are so complete and alive that I want to rewind and rewatch every scene. Even the characters involved in the cases which are all deliberately unconventional feel very real. I truly love this show.

I also watched IL MARE after seeing some beanies mentioning it. The Lake House has always been a favorite movie of mine so I have been rather hesitant to watch the original. But I did and I'm so glad that I did!
Now I know why @javabeans is obsessed and smitten with Lee Jung-jae! I have seen him act many times but never fell for him like I did in IL MARE!
The actors, the characters, the sets, the relationships, the story telling, the timelines, nearly everything was so so SO better than the American remake, EXCEPT the ending.

Time travel and similar tropes are my catnip but I always have reservations when the story ends with one of the leads already completely in love and the other one not remembering anything. I don't have a problem if this happens in the middle or beginning of the story (like in W, or Familiar Wife) where I can watch them tell the other one their past, and start a new story. My problem is when this is where the story ends. In some of the stories I can make myself believe that the other one will suddenly dream or remember their past. But I can't do that with IL MARE. Especially because at that particular time she was going through an emotional vulnerable time and I didn't like seeing him appearing in front of her home. So I very much prefer The Lake House's ending, where she tells him to meet her in 2 years. But still, the rest of the movie was BEAUTIFUL!

I feel the same way about the ending of Il Maré. I wished they met two years in the future as earlier planned.

But I kinda gave thought to why it ended the way it did : at the beginning. All this while, he was the one waiting for her. He's the one who had to wait two years one week for them to meet which is so so 🤭 when I think about it. So why not make the future come to them instead of they walking into the future. So even though he still has to wait for her now in the present time, they're doing it together, not separated by time.

I still agree with you that a meeting in the future would have struck the most perfect landing. I know there is a wait, but that wait was all a part of the well-woven romance and will make their relationship have more air of mystique to it.

I’m so glad you both enjoyed Il Mare! I haven’t seen the Lake House so I have no idea how it ends there. Though I think the ending in Il Mare is a bit confusing (for me, it opens for interpretations), but somehow it makes sense for me.

When the FL runs towards the mailbox to put in her last letter, somehow the movie shows us her running towards it three times. I chose to interpret it that she has been doing this thrice (like in parallel multiverse of some sort) and the universe agrees to grant her the desperate wish in this last time, making it possible for the ML to get the letter in time. And when the story ends with the opening scene for me it means the destiny of both has changed because the ML got the letter in time this time.

The reason I said it seems to be open for interpretation is that sometimes I just think that maybe the ending is what could have been had the letter got to him in time. Because the movies begins differently from that ending, I sometimes doubt if the ending is a dream of what could have been instead of reality. In fact, the ending makes the show an even better show for me. It is like a piece of art, which one can interpret the way one likes. 😊

The movie begins differently because in the beginning that scene is in the fl's timeline, in the end it is in the ml's timeline, two years later. He got the letter right when he was coming out of his house and didn't go to her, so he stayed alive.
A paradox is created, which is normal in time-slip stories, that the house still needs to remain empty for the fl to rent it, so we don't know how that happens if the ml doesn't die.
In the American version, the fl writes for him to stay away and not go to her on that day so he doesn't die in an accident, wait two years, and then meet her at the lake house. She sits down by the mail box crying, not knowing if he has gotten the letter or not. And after a short while we see the ml walking towards her. He got the letter, waited two years, and came on the same date. For her only a few hours have passed.
This has the benefit of both of them loving and remembering each other, but still leaves the paradox, which as I said is normal.

Finished DR CHA. It's a fantasy that a woman could simply pick up where she left off in medical training from 20 years earlier, so why not fantasize as well an ending that she could have romantic love as well as self-actualization and career? Kdrama's recent trend toward career as holy grail and cynicism about the possibility of romantic love does not appeal to me. If I wanted that, I could watch western shows and not have to bother with subtitles. Other than that, I liked DR CHA. I liked her husband's journey toward becoming a near-mensch and even liked his whiny selfish mother. The breakdown of Dr Cha's marriage was painfully realistic and moving. Uhm Jung-Hwa is wonderful in this.

ONCE AGAIN (2020) It starts off very well, but at ep 10 of 100, it's ff time. I'll stick with it for a while and see. The episodes are short and I like these actors a lot.

BLOODHOUNDS. Great Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi bromance.
For me the boxing display of both these guys was excellent. Tremendous physicality. Obviously they trained hard. The prominence of knife fighting in the drama was a detraction to me. Unnecessarily gory. There are weak points in the plot that @wise, Wise points out in comment #30. However up and down the cast the individual performances were terrific.
A few odd observations:
1 BLOOD HOUNDS seems to have been a PPl for the Ford Mustang. (I recall the prominence of the Chevy Camaro in LAWLESS LAWYER).
2. The ROKMC (Marines) had much better public relations in this drama than lets say the ROKA (Army) did in D.P. (2021).
3. I am smiling thing about Kim Min-jae’s cameo. (He is detective Jae-min here). He may have told the producers ‘I can give you one day’ and they took him up on it. All his part probably was filmed in half a day.
4. One good thing about BLOOD HOUNDS is that there was no love triangle. For some reason though and I am not really sure why but overall I think I would give Jang Dong-yoon’s OASIS (Viki US) the edge if I had to choose which was better between the two 2023 tough guy/action dramas that I have watched so far this year.

The Dude in Me (2019), with Park Sung-Woong as a considerably more redeemable gangster than in Bloodhounds. Best part was a fat-suited Jinyoung as his alter ego, taking care of the high school bullies with attitude and smarts.

Seducing Mr. Perfect is an oldie but goodie. I recently watched it and wonder what happened to Daniel Henney--he always gives off a good-natured vibe, regardless of the type of characters he plays.

I really like PSW as an actor. He plays interesting roles like The Dude in Me (whole-heartedly agreed on some of the hilarity), but also one of my favorite of his roles, the devil in When the Devil Calls Your Name. When comparing the two parts, his acting range is pretty impressive.

Daniel Henney is actually an American actor whose mother was adopted from Korea and knew no Korean. (his name is about as classically Irish as you can get). he started his career in Korea as an actor- before that he had modelled in Taiwan and Hong Kong. When he played Dr. Kim in the classic MY LOVELY SAM SOON he had not yet learned Korean although he did do so afterwards. After doing several memorable roles in Koea he returned to the US in 2009 where he had landed a role in X-MEN "WOLVERINE" which is one of the best films in that franchise and also the TV series THREE RIVERS. He has been a part of US television and film ever since. He does occasionally make appearances in Korea, you could have seen him in a cameo role in DEAR MY FRIENDS, to give an example.
His last significant Korean role was in THE FUGITIVE: PLAN B.

I most recently saw him in the role of Lan Mandragorian in the Amazon adaptation of THE WHEEL OF TIME. He is still extremely good looking.

SEDUCING MR. PERFECT was one of the first Korean movies that I ever watched. It is a classic.

I actually watched him in most of the roles you mentioned, including the terrible US TV series, Three Rivers, which I sat through because he was in it and the last significant thing he's done that I've seen. I thought his Kdrama characters were much more interesting, so have been hoping he'd do another more substantial one despite the smaller market (SK vs US). He's attractive but not my eye candy type, so I actually liked his American take in acting interpretation in Kdramas that I found more interesting.

What I'm watching:

_ Shining inheritance (24 out of 28). I thought this was a rom-com but I quickly realized it was a makjang without almost any comedy element. Makjangs are not my favorite genre, in fact the only makjang I had watched (and liked) was King of Baking.
I have developed a bit of SMLS in Shining inheritance, by the way, and I'm someone who usually roots for the male leads in love triangles.

Western shows:

_ Queen Charlotte (3 episodes so far). Stunning production, but too many sex scenes, which I'm not a fan of. But it's not a surprise, having watched S1 and S2 of Bridgerton.

Looking at the feedback it depends; a binge watch may be the way to go as you can ride out the early episode issues and get into the main story. However, if you love the banter in the comments when people have strong opinions and I think we will get lots of feedback on both shows due to the very high expectations after a long period with very few good shows, then live watching is the way to go.

I am a binge-watcher, but I sometimes check the comments while I watch a show, and I'm always amazed at how much people miss or forget when they live-watch.
Sometimes I see comments being angry at a plot hole, wondering about a new character, confused about a point, when I have seen it clearly explained 4 episodes back. It is understandable to forget after a few weeks, or even miss it completely when you are watching many shows, but on the whole, this has proved to me time and again that binge-watching is the way to go for me.

I even wondered who does a pregnancy test at work!

1

Lol at assuming it was another drama! 😄

1

A lot of young Korean adults still live with their family. So at work would be a better place to do it.

I guess it's about the flow too, once she got the courage to buy a test, maybe she didn't want to postpone it and make it fast.

I'm a confirmed binge-watcher—I haven't live-watched a show since the only available option was network tv. I like to become totally immersed in a show, and therefore only watch one show at a time.

I read the recaps the day after watching. It avoids spoilers, while filling in some details I might have missed that would add to my enjoyment of subsequent episodes.

Binge or live-watch depends on the type of drama, for me and it might for you too.

Like, I knew right off the bat that the slow-burn Call it Love would have to be a binge for me because I’d go mental with it dragged out for 8 weeks. I even thought about counting back the days from the live finale and binging the first 14 shows just in time to live-watch the end :).

I didn’t hesitate to live-watch Tale 1938 though. I knew that’d be easy to wait the week. I live-watched Dr. Cha no problem too.

For now, I’m putting these two in this latter grouping—I think that they’re going to be tropey enough for me to live-watch and trust the writers not to string my heart out too badly. However, I will wait until both weekly episodes drop and watch them each in two+ hour stretches. I could never-ever do just one hour/day.

If, however, these shows start to mess with my feelings too much…believe it or not, it’s better for me to just stop watching and wait until I can finish the show all the way to the end.

That was about me, and you asked about you…but I hope you can find a parallel or two!!

We are still watching Sell your haunted house but the storyline is becoming slow and bland. I do not care for the construction-corruption scheme. And though it is nice to have a respectful ML, this one is much more a follower.
We have started One spring night. One ep is too short, so I'm not into it for now. (even if I'm into Jung Hae In)
I found myself watching parts of cdrama A date with the future for the bright smile and dimple of William Chan. But this seemingly light drama is very toxic. In so more as it is the main characters behaviours that are problematic, and not the one of an identified bad person. She is a stalker, and pursue/harass him until he falls for her. Despite her telling him that she only loved him for 10y, he is jealous. And he asks her to tell him everything that she does. Also, he encourage 2ML to go on pursuing 2FL after she repeatedly said she was not interested. Such "romance" shows worse behaviours than police drama explaining crimes...
I might have a different view on morality, since I enjoy at lot the twisted and twisting Police Unit 38 (who is not the police but a criminals team working with a tax agent). This drama is a delight. Acting and script are stellar. Seo In Guk is excellent as a swindler, and does not overdoes it like in Minamdang.
Somehow it correlates with a sentiment from Numbers, King the land and Can you feel my heartbeats trailers that the current humour is not well aligned with mine... Well I still have a lot of dramas on my watchlist, so I'll have time to see how these turn.

Totally agree with you about Police Unit 38! I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, their relationships, and twisty plot.

I have a particular affinity for shows that depict morality and integrity as gray areas—not black and white. Is it ever okay to break the law if it's for a good cause? Should you feel guilty about rooting for an assassin who kills someone even more evil than themself? I love shows that make me question some of my core beliefs and convictions.

Shall I worry that I've never felt guilty to root for Dexter or Vincenzo ? They are the (anti)-heros so aren't we supposed to root for them ?
I appreciate shows bringing new questions. Luckilly for me, my mundane life is far from killing considerations and the country I'm in has mostly laws that are just.

No need to feel guilty; these characters are not real, and—as you say—we’re supposed to root for them. The subversion of the “knight-in-shining-armor” trope is part of what makes them so much fun to watch. I’m not so sure I’d feel the same way about a real-life Vincenzo or Dexter, though.

Like you, I’m lucky to live in a safe and secure environment. I’m also able to enjoy the privileges that come from my social class and skin color. Unfortunately, one look at the prison population in my country makes it apparent that our laws are not applied fairly and equally to all citizens.

I would be terrified by a real-life Vincenzo or Dexter.
And sadly I'm not sure there is one country where the law is applied fairly to all (even if it way worse for some).

I had no interest in watching King the Land (the leads look like siblings to me, I'm not interested in romance, etc) but then I saw the first episode got a lot of criticism which piqued my interest considering I was JUST talking about "bad scripts" which is apparently the criticism of the first episode: the writer didn't do a good job and it seemed like a cliched problematic '00 drama (which I don't understand what that means). Does that mean a male lead being a jerk to the female but the woman interested in him anyway? Would all that happen in a 1st episode?

I must not know what subversion means because it often seems like people shows to subvert tropes but then they also want the tropes. You *want* the "tortured, emotionally empty guy who comes alive because of the bright eyed, optimistic guy" but then you don't want it that way.

I have no idea what the show is about but I took a guess haha
How off base am I with that description?

I have seen the first episode and I liked it.
And I'm not ashamed to admit that 😊
Parachuting and (literal) toilet humour included. 😁

(So far male lead is not a jerk and Heroine is not interested in him.)

Which subverts the tropes right there. Another trope subverted: What Chaebol Heir gets himself fired from his internship on the first day? (even years pass before he returns to the hotel).

This is actually looking promising: There may be some actual comedy in this romcom.

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 FINALLY an ending to a drama that deserves the name (i.e. no cliffhangers - yes, I am looking at you, Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist and Vagabond!). Except for an unnecessary venture into Zombie territory in eps 9 and 10, this drama was perfect in every way.

Bloodhounds I did not expect to like this as much as I did. The bromance kept me (binge) watching. Heo Joon-ho was my favourite actor in the "Missing 1 and 2", and Park Sung-woong is one of my favourite villains (although he was super funny in "The Dude in Me" and "Yes, Madam", too).

See you in my 19th life Shin Hye-sun is one of my favourite actresses. Thankfully, this drama really looks promising. The child actors were just so sassy and cute!

*******Spoiler alert*******

The ending of ep. 1 had me in stitches: "If you do not want to give me the job, why not date me?" Man, I wish I had that chutzpah.

That ending sold the show to me, too; and that is what I call a good ep thank makes a show promising!

What else can we expect from a woman having all her past life memories who just met her most recent past life crush? It’s reasonable and understandable and adorable.

*Fight For My Way*: After the long winded discussions on Seo Joon's dramas last week, decided to take a plunge to watch this one. Right off the bat, Choi Woo Shik is giving me all kinds of tickles hahaha! I see both of them (Seo-Joon and Woo -Shik) in the frame and get reminded of the rib tickling real life chemistry of these two best friends in 'Friendcation' and start smiling like an idiot. I hope they have lots of scenes because I have a feeling I will sit with a popcorn pack just to see these two rib each other.

*The Empress*: Started this German series. It's impressive in its scale and textured presentation. But its characters and their body language feel too modern, a pet peeve I have with almost all modern actors who don't get the body language of the people living in bygone era right.

*Suits*: My son is big into original Suits and is mighty curious on its Korean take (I suffered through Season 1 of original Suits and didn't like it). I felt Korean suits did a lot of things right. So that's on the plate this weekend as well (yay for long weekend).

Update on *Fight for my way* - Episode 11 and I am losing steam, my fingers itching for the FF button. I was right about Seo Joon - intimate chemistry is does not raise a storm from him. It did peak at some point and then went flat. And I liked Kim Ji Won better in 'Heirs'. And the other pair is so annoying. Seriously, what's up with them, the guy's behaviour makes no sense. Seo Joon is fab in the fight scenes though. They should have focussed on that more, it would have made for a grittier drama.
Choi Woo Sik was an absolute delight while he lasted hahaha! What a sleazeball and such a cute one that! He played the pathetic entitled jerk so so well LOL! The scenes with him and Seo Joon together were the best.

COMPLETED:-

*Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938* (12/12) - What a thrilling ride from beginning to end! Funny yet heart-felt, macho yet full of kickass women! I hope Season 3 comes soon. 10/10 Stars

*Star Struck* (8/8) - The most disappointing KBL of the year till now. Started so well but ended so badly. 4/10 Stars

WATCHING:-

*Delightfully Deceitful* (6/16) - This one has the most unpredictable Kdrama FL ever. Not that our staid ML is as predictable as he looks either! It's a bit too fast paced at times and also seems to be deliberately confusing the audience, as a result of which the characters don't seem as real as they should. But the show is definitely engaging and I'm in for the ride.

*Bitch x Rich* (6/10) - A high school bullying drama where the good FL is as unlikable as the bad FL. Hope the upcoming clashes are more interesting than the story set-up till now.

*Battle For Happiness* (6/16) - This makjang-style murder mystery is all tensions and undercurrents and shocking revelations. I'm loving it!

*Queenmaker* (7/11) - How is it that every Kdrama I'm watching these days has strong, badass women? This is another one where the men stand around quietly while the women run the world. The political backdrop is a bit dry and the nasty chaebols are as cliche as they come. The show isn't anything outstanding as yet, but the actresses are too compelling and I'm gonna watch till the end.

*Love Tractor* (2/8) - Cute beginning though nothing very exciting till now. The rural backdrop is a sight for sore eyes though.

Three different dramas in a week! Maybe kdramaland is trying to get back my love!

The Real Has Come 01-08 A weekender! And it's kind of decent! I don't even remember why I gave this a chance probably the contract marriage trope and somebody's recommendation. The main couple is likable, it's not draggy and some of the misunderstandings were actually funny. I'm surprisingly addicted to it and curious if it will keep me interested for the long run.

King the Land The title itself is absurd so I should have known the drama would be silly. It's not offensive in the craziness but this kind of absurd comedy is not my style, the crazy just takes you away from the drama. Well it got a chance for the entire first episode which is more than most previous dramas from this year.

See you in my 19th Life This was one of the best first episodes in a very long while. Maybe the secret is to go in with low expectations! I like the cast but was waiting for the crazy to begin and instead caught myself very emotionally invested on the kids and the older niece. I didn't even remember the adult actors and wish they had been only after this first episode. The premise was fantastical enough that drama seems interested in exploring it instead of throwing some killer just to spice it up, at least in the beginning. The reincarnation trope is a better too. That silly idea of past lives with the same face? Not here. Superficial encounters between children that lead to obsessed adults? Far from it. It was so natural and nicely done that I didn't even mind when the girl turned into a stalker. Keep up the good work drama!

My 19th Life - an absolute stunner giving you so many feels!!!!

I can’t help but tearing up throughout once the story is set up - which is clear and clean storytelling with all the reincarnation rules conveyed succinctly and back story told charmingly and sensuously. Love, love it - will rewatch today before Ep 2 comes tonight.

What an intense 12 hours drama watching! Finished Dr Kim S3 Finale which is as great as it can get. Will there be a S4 now that the WHOLE team is back at Doldam? I will watch it for sure.

Then I started King The Land but, unfortunately, Ep 1 is pretty ordinary. I think the trailer has all the best bits making this premier less than lackluster. It looks like a long road to catch up.

My 19th Life is on the other hand so winning that it might be the best drama this year. And, how lovely to see the reunion of our Queen and her Court Lady! I almost screamed when their scene came up even though I know they are both cast here.

I watched all of Bloodhounds this week. I don't like violence but I do love a good bromance, and this was definitely one! I also got caught up on the weekender The Real Has Come!
I went to see a friend who asked me to recommend K-dramas! It was amazing. I showed her a couple I really like on Netflix, but she was sold immediately on Because This is My First Life. So that was neat!

Is she a newbie to K dramas. I find it can be hard to know what will make sense for a newbie once you are steeped in the world you forget how different some elements can seem. The wrist grabs, the prevalence of teen suicides or school bullying, violence and explicit sexism in the work place, the love triangle and money envelop threat can become background noise once you have seen a few dramas.

She's a newbie. It felt similar to the time I tried to show my then-toddler (now college student!) some videos of animals we were reading about in children's books. First I showed them penguins, then I wanted to show them hippos and bears. NO! MORE PENGUINS! That's how my friend R. felt about the snippets of dramas I was sharing. "But I liked that first one!"
