Thankfully i still haven’t watch yet The Confidence Man JP. So i still have a chance to watch him in a good drama!
AND, LIVE – seems like we 3 r d only 1s who r passionately watching this @mango@coolgirl
here is new short teaser – same 4 episodes with 1-3 seconds of episode 05 and 06
Okay – I found those. It’s such a shame that hardly any legal sites pick up jdramas. I watched a couple on VIU and am loving the different tone of story-telling.
Netflix and Prime Video have few of them.
I recommend strongly on Netflix Million Yen Women and Erased (a must watch for me) and i heard a lot of good thing on Midnight Dinner (2015) and Switched (2018)
I read Netflix is interested in buying more but Japan for reasons that escape everyone is not willing to sell them and made copyright laws more complex to discourage buyers.
I didn’t think we would follow the guy’s life in the Philippines and the events that occurred there for this week’s episode. About the girl, what happened to her in the beginning was a shock for me as I thought “you-know-what” would become the (re)connection between her and the guy.
I caught up with the first 3 episodes because of your convo with @mango !
Ep 3 was stunning visually: everything shot in Philippines felt like an indie film, and the story took really a dramatic turn!
I loved that i saw though i felt irritated by Toko’s decision: it didn’t make sens to me how she treated Kyiotaka and how she reacts when her adoptive father/uncle tries to learn more.
But everything else was pretty good: it took me out of my jdrama slump!
I was pleasantly surprised with Philippines scenes and the budget must be higher for this drama than the regular ones. It could totally be an indie film!
All of the “keeping everything for herself” from Toko is indeed frustrating because it will add more of dramatic effect later.
It’s not only the beauty of Philippines: it’s also the way the camera stayed quite focused, without movement during the scenes filmed outside Japan, as if time freezed and things weren’t real, which made the brutal return to reality through the shocking twist even more unexpected and violent.
I feel more and more that Toko is supposed to be frustrating: we’re not privy to her thoughts and she seems an enigma most of the time.
Also, it seems to me most of her reactions and actions are motivated by selfishness only, but she managed to do it in a way that doesn’t make her irritating (except maybe for her father).
I thought first that her decision to keep things secret was noble idiocy (and i found it to be lazy writing) but actually it seems more that she didn’t want to rely on anyone but herself (though she couldn’t leave her father) and made a conscious choice to keep Kiyotaka out of her life.
What happened to him was already hundred times more traumatic, so i hope he will never learn what she tried to hide. It might end up breaking a little more what’s left of him and he lost already so much.
On another note, his relationship with Justin was heartbreaking: i wish the drama spent more time on it.
Anyway, the main actor is doing a fantastic job: he really gave depth to his character.
Toko’s mindset makes me think she’s adding unneeded troubles
and stress for her and her father who seems like he’s going to have a disease. I can understand wanting to keep her pregnancy a secret but keeping everything piled up isn’t good for her mental health. She’ll break down at one point and that will happen at the same time as her father won’t be healthy I suppose. There’s her junior who could become a good support but it will be frustrating from a viewer’s pov.
I agree the main actor is doing a wonderful job! His interactions with Justin and his time in the Philippines are good enough imo. In such a short time, we have seen the two of them bonding and witnessed this traumatic experience. I love the contrast between the warm colours in the Philippines compared to the cold ones in Japan. You’re right about the dream comparaison. I think this is to accentuate the far away, foreign and dream-like (that became a nightmare) journey that was showed to us but that the main lead will have a hard time to wake up from.
Last week for some reason I looked this up after reading the posts here on DB (found so many good shows and movies that way) and really liked the first episode.
Are they only posting one ep a week?
@catocat thank you for posting this!
I was curious about this and so off I went to find it and watched the first episode. WOW.
just love when beanies recommend shows and movies as I always look them up.
The police needs to take this issue more seriously. What’s with the “call next time the man appear?” She might be dead. CCTV don’t prevent assaults, so patrols like the woman in red suggested should increase.
The thriller Door Lock starring Gong Hyo Jin portrayed this issue.
I’m aware that you liked it a lot, but since I can’t see it working in a live action format, I didn’t watch it. I guess it must have been popular if it’s getting a second season?
Haven’t watched the raw yet, but it seems bad.
I really hope they have a good ending, I mean even Love and Fortune had a happy ending (according to mydramalist spoilers)
