Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (June 17, 2023)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: I’m in denial that it’s over. The finale was appropriately and wonderfully outlandish and heartfelt. I loved everything about it, convenient plot devices and all. Like I’ve been saying from the start, the characters were always at the center, and so everything that spun around them was totally fine by me. By the end of the drama I not only loved Lee Dong-wook, Kim Bum, and Kim So-yeon more than ever, but I developed a two-part crush on Moo-young (he was always too warm to be evil) and Jae-yoo, the faithful puppy incarnate. I never say this, but: Season 3, please.

Bloodhounds: I only caught the first episode so far, and I only did it for a) the boxing b) Woo Do-hwan, but honestly the growing rapport between the boys was the highlight for me. The way they played off each other and interacted — from fighting in the ring to chatting at the BBQ restaurant — felt so humorous and so realistic. And so, the entire episode became enjoyable, because watching those two banter and switch levels of speech and discuss their training hacks left me having way more fun than I expected.

Currently covering: Delightfully Deceitful

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: So many things in the finale didn’t make sense, and I don’t care — this show was a blast from start to finish, I’m glad everyone got their happy endings, and I can’t wait for Season 3. That said, I did have to create my own rationalization for how in the world all the changes in the past didn’t impact the future at all. So until and unless Season 3 tells me otherwise, my interpretation is that the two timelines split off into two separate universes, one where Season 1 happened and one where it wasn’t necessary because Rang and Yeon (and the other mountain gods) stayed friends.

Unit

The Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: An absolutely crack-tastic watch! Loved every minute of the wild ride, and I’m having massive withdrawal symptoms. I’m tempted to check out the first season for more of the bromance of the fox brothers, but I don’t think I can handle seeing Rang die.

Happiness Battle: I honestly can’t tell why I’m still watching this, but I tune in each week.

Sunbae, Don’t Put on That Lipstick: Aside from the drama’s failed attempt at an English title (She Would Never Know… Never know what??) I enjoyed watching this. Loved the office dynamics, the OTP’s romance (that height difference!!), and the healthy sibling relationship between the male lead and his sisters. The drama also gets bonus points for having such a beautiful poster and a vibrant color palette.

Finished
Race and liked the drama overall as a whole but it dint have much of impact other than YoonJo whome i loved being the unconventional self reliant female lead... who doesnt depend on male lead or second male lead for her life decisions.

watching
i started Something in the rain (cause i liked Encounter upon my rewatch so thought to pick it up too) and i am kind of liking it... its way too slow for my liking and i tend to stop a day or 2 in between and then start again... but i find it decent drama. just hoping it wont let me pull my hair by the end.

waiting for
King the land, See you in 19th life
but not sure if Netflix will show in my country but fingets crossed that it does.

and till then i am just staring at my Netflix homepage if King the land drops soon.

It is so good in the early stages for showing the passion and excitement of new love and how much better this relationship is over her previous one but then…..

This drama is not a rom-com. It showed the women condition in Korea society with their family, at work, etc. So not a light watch at all, even if the couple was really cute in the beginning of their relationship.

Love it. I will tag you into a fan wall post so you can say why. That way we can have a full chat without putting spoilers in this thread. I need to know if the same things wound you up as much as they did me. I will say on here as I say everywhere the mistake of adding two country and western songs on the OST will not be forgiven.

One Spring Night was supposed to be better so if you didn’t like that one its probably best to back away quietly and then sprint off in the other direction.

4

I liked One Spring Night but wholeheartedly agree with @reply1988 that if you didn't, you should run away from SITR like your socks are on fire.

5

I didn't like the time share element, where she had not properly accepted her dry relationship was over from her perspective before acknowledging that something was in the air with the next man. They were two separate issues and I don't like it when there is unnecessary overhang leading to messiness and often hurt. The dumped person thinks it is connected with the new person when it was over long before the new person was on the scene.

3

I think I'm in the minority of people who didn't like One Spring Night, which I watched after Something in the Rain. I found the FL insufferable.

3

Hahaha… your description of SitR is savage. I think I’ve only watched it until the hand holding under the table scene. I don’t know… I didn’t feel anything so I did not continue. There were times I thought I should try to pick up again, but then I could not. Your comment tells me my lack of will to continue is right.

SITR holds a special place in my heart. It was my gateway into dramaworld, which until then I just didn't get. But, oh that crackly chemistry in the first half, swoon, I was sold. And then, to borrow from a better writer, things fell apart.

Only later did I understand it was a much more complex drama as @kurama stated. It's just that the show was too successful in selling the giddy romance that many felt ambushed by what came next even tho in rewatches you can see the writers trying to lay the groundwork. And that ending... Oof.

So I loved and hated it both, a lot. I wish I'd live-watched it with the Beanie community. But I only saw it last year.

I still watch the early episodes now and then, and pretend the second half didn't happen.

TALE OF THE NINE-TAILED 1938 was far better than I would have expected. My wife loved it. She is a big fan of nine-tailed foxes and mermaids so the writers definitely catered to her tastes with this one.

This week saw me hang in there and complete my watch of OH! YOUNG-SHIN. I am not quite sure why I did so other than that many other dramas simply did not appeal to me right now, which should change with the start of SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE and KING THE LAND. Both start today! (that is worth at least a Yippee)

Fortunately, I have a weekender to watch as a continuing part of my drama life. Last week’s episodes of THE REAL HAS COME had some surprises. Whoever would have expected to see our FL and her older sister in law crying in each other’s arms? What a delight seeing our 2FL suddenly out of balance with the reappearance of the 2ML. This Weekender does not lack for intertwining plotlines- if anything there are so many that some of our potential side romances, like the story of Macknae and the Young Father, are getting only a little screen time right now. When tonight’s episode ends we will be at exactly the halfway point for this drama and it will be interesting to see where things stand then.

I have also been watching the daily APPLE OF MY EYE. So far it is a pleasant watch.

My wife completed her recovery from the Chinese Costume fantasy TILL THE END OF THE MOON by starting the Chinese Historical Costume drama RUYI’S ROYAL LOVE IN THE PALACE. This is a serious undertaking in itself- it has 87 episodes. She has watched long costume dramas before so that does not necessarily faze her and so far, already twenty plus episodes in (in two days) she says it is really good. She was not quite ready to start a fantasy again so a historical drama is a good alternative. She is watching it on Amazon Prime, but it can also be found on Viki. It may be a struggle to tear her away to watch SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE and KING THE LAND with me.

RUYI’S ROYAL LOVE IN THE PALACE is a brilliant drama but the poor woman endures too much so it’s a real rollercoaster ride of emotions. I really enjoyed it and because it’s one of my early Chinese historical drama it holds a special place alongside Eternal love. I am surprised with your wife’s extensive watch list she didn’t have it on the watched already list as it is an older one. I think I saw it on Prime.

She is now at episode 27 and already has the same feeling that you have about the poor female lead.

This is a show that she has had on her watch list for a long time- and is finally getting to. Sometimes that is just the way things go- and in particular with so many Chinese Costume dramas out there to choose from it is little wonder is little wonder that some really good simply languish on the list. Many Beanies had seen both THE UNTAMED and NIRVANA IN FIRE before my wife had (she recommends both very highly).

She is also watching it on Prime. I would note that Prime has apparently made some sort of deal with iQIYI to carry some of their shows so many more of these will be available on Prime in the future. Come time to renew my iQIYI subscription next year I may have to think about whether or not I still need it.

@oldawyer, A recommendation perhaps for your wife.
I have been on hiatus from the current crop of kdramas working in some crime cdramas on iQIYI.
On a lark I tuned into the cdrama comedy AN ACTOR’S RHAPSODY (2023). It is a comedy/spoof on cdrama production that happens to take place on the set of a historical drama.
There are 24 ten minute(ish) episodes so they can be worked in here and there. The set up is that the major and only investor in the project is a young guy (Chen Teng Yue) who has cast himself as the lead. He has total control over the thing and is constantly telling the female screenwriter (his foil) to change story lines. It is wacky but that is the point. Every trope in the book is thrown in. By the end CTY winds up playing 10+ characters. A sort of tour de force performance for the young actor.

My Perfect Stranger This drama could have maintained the suspense until the end! The couple is super cute.

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3 The last episode was very frustrating. The strike didn't make sense, so every character involved made me angry. Protecting their rights? He didn't make them overworked or something like this. He just gave one rule to follow. If they disagreed when he did, they could leave the Trauma Center and switch places with somebody.

Race It was a nice drama. I prefer She Would Never Know from the same PD because the characters had a better evolution but the office part was really interesting in Race.

The Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 It was entertaining and beautiful.

Waiting for King the Land and See You in My 19th Life!

The Good Bad Mother : Overall, it was quite decent for me. It wasn’t a heavy drama though it has some tears jerking moment and the ending was kinda okay too. The best part is the twins for me. They are the only accident that is beautiful ever happened to the lead couple.

Bloodhounds : Characters 8.5/10. I really like the brothers. Both have different personalities and fighting styles yet they complement and supporting each other. Sang Yi with his footwork and fast jab is more calculative and realistic as a person and Do Hwan with his powerful blow is so pure and an idealist but both are brave, selfless and strong they are willing to sacrifice for other people. I’d give the directing 7/10 because the action was good but sports car and ninja bike for tailing? Nah. Also, I think they should have present the 2 main lead stories equally instead of leaning heavier toward WDH’s character. They underplaying LSY’s. I think they could show us more about LSY’s character especially in the action scenes. I really like his style and want to see more of him. The writing? 2/10. Really, if not because the acting and action scenes the story is as holey as donuts. Rich guy with no alarm system in his house? Or gangster attacking cafe and no report to the police by neighbors? Wine after attacking enemy? Jeez. Also I hate the writer for killing half of the team in one episode. I can fully enjoy the drama only after episode 6. Last 2 episodes is the same drama with different genre which I can handle better because of the additional comedy and I know it’s winning time for the heroines. Up until 6 I was having a hard time binge watching because I have low tolerance to suspense and I know some good guys would die. I don’t mind season 2, but can we have different writer, please? Also, who else thinking the sashimi ahjussi is hhoott? He reminds me of Park Hee Soon in My Name.

Delightfully Deceitful : I like how the FL sometimes (or most of the time) is so unpleasant and kinda hard to tolerate. The writer is staying true to the character she created which is a psycopath and don’t justifying or sugar coating the ugly traits the character have like narcissism and lack of emphaty. So far this is a fun ride though this show still not gripping me while it moving forward deeper into the story. As if the drama itself have a big picture of where the story will go or unfold, yet they don’t have clear destination yet. Something is missing.

I also like how the Delightfully Deceitful writer is sticking with creating a character who doesn't have a heroine type of personality. She's is not fighting for justice. I don't think the FL is a psychopath completely lacking empathy either.

I'm looking forward to this drama every week, but since the drama is a bit off-kilter, I feel like it could probably work better as a release-all-the-episodes-at-once thing instead of the traditional weekly release.

I finally finished TILL THE END OF THE MOON and it was a gloriously beautiful ride. Without LYX I've wouldn't have liked it half as much, not even sure if I'd had finished it. He is absolutely magnetic and deserves award upon award for this performance. The FL was by far the biggest problem of the show and if it wasn't for Bai Lu, I'd hate her instead of rolling my eyes at her. But I loved how everything was connected.
Ah! The eyes rolls, the side eyes. The eyeliner. Great make-up artist, that.

THE LOVE YOU GIVE ME is cute and has the cutest little five-year-old spouting way too clever lines for someone his age. I couldn't care less about the side couples but the leads are great together.

CIRCLE OF LOVE: This is nonsensical and I'd never put up with it if it was a regular length drama but the leads have great chemistry.

GRANDMASTER OF DEMONIC CULTIVATION (audio drama): Gaah! The voice actors are incredible. It makes it all worth it having to get up at 5.30.

Viewers wow have a problem with the FL may forgot that she was the ONLY one who witnessed the carnage caused by the ML first hand. Even ML's teacher who later so guided and trusted him so completely only got a glimpse of the damages done by the ML through the FL's memory. With that, the FL was very likely to have PTSD every time the ML did something beyond the realm of the FL's moral compass, such as the time when FL saw the ML absorbing the fox (Pian Ran)'s spirit. With that in mind, plus the fact that the ML schemed to use the FL to kill the SML, how could any rational-think one dare to bet the lives of millions on the mind of 1 unpredictable ML? It is always a question of 1 versus millions. And here the FL chose to sacrificed her life (she though she was going to perish, not knowing that she was go home). Yes, maybe later whe the ML pretend to go to the dark side, the FL could believe his more, but the ML did everything he could to make the FL cut all her emotional tie to become the goddess capable of killing him. The FL finally was ready to die with him saying that without hims, the world no longer needs a goddess. The problem with the drama is that in order to please female viewers, it depicts the ML much much better than the one portrayed in the book (who torture and had borderline necrophile and cannibalism regarding FL) and gave many good deeds done by FL to the ML, which is a pity. Ultimately, I felt more for the FL than the ML as I always feel that the abuse, the misery a person carries is not an excuse for all the wrongdoing he would do, it could serve as mitigating factors, otherwise, why should ordinary people suffer because a person is miserable and in pain?

Required fields are marked *

No, it's not that.

Her reasoning came through quite well and her hate of the future ML was justified. It was that she was so utterly devoid of reason though depicted as wise and so made bad decisions.

The story was the depiction of nature vs nurture and the fact that the ML never turned evil was in spite of everything the FL did, not because of her. That is, unless you count his obsession with her as enough of a distraction to steer him off of greed for power (which he never veered towards in the first place). All she ever did was betray him and subvert his efforts to stay good and doing good. While this might be explained by her hate it doesn't negate the stupidity of it. He was innocent at the time and she failed to understand that.

It doesn't even stand to reason that she was too disgusted by him to pretend at being his love interest, she could very well have matched him up with someone else.

How I wished he'd turn bad just so she would have that lightbulb moment and go "Ah! I and the people around him caused this, not some obscure bone. Karma bites"

Maybe Disney has seen the light? Several unavailable dramas have popped up on Hulu. I’m finally watching Link and they even put Dr. Romantic 3 in progress there. Might even try Family. If Disney could just have a consistent policy about showing kdramas internationally, I would forgive them for buying up so much of the market.

Link is very watchable although it feels so last year to have so much murder and secrets. Pretty sure I have picked out the sister and the friend who told on his dad. Not that it’s hard when there are only so many characters. Not sure what is the point with the stalker’s sister (she seems to manic to really be his sister?) so I’m curious to see where that goes.

I am rewatching BRAIN WORKS and loving it even more this time around.
Apart from the baddy whom I'm completely fast-forwarding, (his scenes are unfortunately very crucial to the story and Haru's storyline so I didn't ff any of it the first watch. But this time I know what is happening and I'm not tolerating that beast again) , most of the leads are so complete and alive that I want to rewind and rewatch every scene. Even the characters involved in the cases which are all deliberately unconventional feel very real. I truly love this show.

I also watched IL MARE after seeing some beanies mentioning it. The Lake House has always been a favorite movie of mine so I have been rather hesitant to watch the original. But I did and I'm so glad that I did!
Now I know why @javabeans is obsessed and smitten with Lee Jung-jae! I have seen him act many times but never fell for him like I did in IL MARE!
The actors, the characters, the sets, the relationships, the story telling, the timelines, nearly everything was so so SO better than the American remake, EXCEPT the ending.

Time travel and similar tropes are my catnip but I always have reservations when the story ends with one of the leads already completely in love and the other one not remembering anything. I don't have a problem if this happens in the middle or beginning of the story (like in W, or Familiar Wife) where I can watch them tell the other one their past, and start a new story. My problem is when this is where the story ends. In some of the stories I can make myself believe that the other one will suddenly dream or remember their past. But I can't do that with IL MARE. Especially because at that particular time she was going through an emotional vulnerable time and I didn't like seeing him appearing in front of her home. So I very much prefer The Lake House's ending, where she tells him to meet her in 2 years. But still, the rest of the movie was BEAUTIFUL!

I feel the same way about the ending of Il Maré. I wished they met two years in the future as earlier planned.

But I kinda gave thought to why it ended the way it did : at the beginning. All this while, he was the one waiting for her. He's the one who had to wait two years one week for them to meet which is so so 🤭 when I think about it. So why not make the future come to them instead of they walking into the future. So even though he still has to wait for her now in the present time, they're doing it together, not separated by time.

I still agree with you that a meeting in the future would have struck the most perfect landing. I know there is a wait, but that wait was all a part of the well-woven romance and will make their relationship have more air of mystique to it.

I’m so glad you both enjoyed Il Mare! I haven’t seen the Lake House so I have no idea how it ends there. Though I think the ending in Il Mare is a bit confusing (for me, it opens for interpretations), but somehow it makes sense for me.

When the FL runs towards the mailbox to put in her last letter, somehow the movie shows us her running towards it three times. I chose to interpret it that she has been doing this thrice (like in parallel multiverse of some sort) and the universe agrees to grant her the desperate wish in this last time, making it possible for the ML to get the letter in time. And when the story ends with the opening scene for me it means the destiny of both has changed because the ML got the letter in time this time.

The reason I said it seems to be open for interpretation is that sometimes I just think that maybe the ending is what could have been had the letter got to him in time. Because the movies begins differently from that ending, I sometimes doubt if the ending is a dream of what could have been instead of reality. In fact, the ending makes the show an even better show for me. It is like a piece of art, which one can interpret the way one likes. 😊

The movie begins differently because in the beginning that scene is in the fl's timeline, in the end it is in the ml's timeline, two years later. He got the letter right when he was coming out of his house and didn't go to her, so he stayed alive.
A paradox is created, which is normal in time-slip stories, that the house still needs to remain empty for the fl to rent it, so we don't know how that happens if the ml doesn't die.
In the American version, the fl writes for him to stay away and not go to her on that day so he doesn't die in an accident, wait two years, and then meet her at the lake house. She sits down by the mail box crying, not knowing if he has gotten the letter or not. And after a short while we see the ml walking towards her. He got the letter, waited two years, and came on the same date. For her only a few hours have passed.
This has the benefit of both of them loving and remembering each other, but still leaves the paradox, which as I said is normal.

Finished DR CHA. It's a fantasy that a woman could simply pick up where she left off in medical training from 20 years earlier, so why not fantasize as well an ending that she could have romantic love as well as self-actualization and career? Kdrama's recent trend toward career as holy grail and cynicism about the possibility of romantic love does not appeal to me. If I wanted that, I could watch western shows and not have to bother with subtitles. Other than that, I liked DR CHA. I liked her husband's journey toward becoming a near-mensch and even liked his whiny selfish mother. The breakdown of Dr Cha's marriage was painfully realistic and moving. Uhm Jung-Hwa is wonderful in this.

ONCE AGAIN (2020) It starts off very well, but at ep 10 of 100, it's ff time. I'll stick with it for a while and see. The episodes are short and I like these actors a lot.

ONCE AGAIN is actually one of the best weekenders that you can watch but does have a fairly slow start that can even be a bit off-putting because that is the part of the story where things are falling apart. That just sets the scene for what follows, which is the real story.

BLOODHOUNDS. Great Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi bromance.
For me the boxing display of both these guys was excellent. Tremendous physicality. Obviously they trained hard. The prominence of knife fighting in the drama was a detraction to me. Unnecessarily gory. There are weak points in the plot that @wise, Wise points out in comment #30. However up and down the cast the individual performances were terrific.
A few odd observations:
1 BLOOD HOUNDS seems to have been a PPl for the Ford Mustang. (I recall the prominence of the Chevy Camaro in LAWLESS LAWYER).
2. The ROKMC (Marines) had much better public relations in this drama than lets say the ROKA (Army) did in D.P. (2021).
3. I am smiling thing about Kim Min-jae’s cameo. (He is detective Jae-min here). He may have told the producers ‘I can give you one day’ and they took him up on it. All his part probably was filmed in half a day.
4. One good thing about BLOOD HOUNDS is that there was no love triangle. For some reason though and I am not really sure why but overall I think I would give Jang Dong-yoon’s OASIS (Viki US) the edge if I had to choose which was better between the two 2023 tough guy/action dramas that I have watched so far this year.

Finished Oh! Youngshim and Bloodhounds. One was considerably more entertaining than the other. And so many muscles! And so much blood! The fight sequences were awesome. Kim Sae-Ron was good in her reduced scenes. I hope she's able to make a comeback.

Movies: Seducing Mr. Perfect (2006), with an adorable Uhm Jung-Hwa and a very young Daniel Henney. Enjoyable fluff.

The Dude in Me (2019), with Park Sung-Woong as a considerably more redeemable gangster than in Bloodhounds. Best part was a fat-suited Jinyoung as his alter ego, taking care of the high school bullies with attitude and smarts.

This is Not What I Expected (2017, Chinese). Indeed, this was a delightful surprise. Classic romcom with delightful characters and an unusual setup. Great for foodies as well as romantics.

Seducing Mr. Perfect is an oldie but goodie. I recently watched it and wonder what happened to Daniel Henney--he always gives off a good-natured vibe, regardless of the type of characters he plays.

I really like PSW as an actor. He plays interesting roles like The Dude in Me (whole-heartedly agreed on some of the hilarity), but also one of my favorite of his roles, the devil in When the Devil Calls Your Name. When comparing the two parts, his acting range is pretty impressive.

Daniel Henney is actually an American actor whose mother was adopted from Korea and knew no Korean. (his name is about as classically Irish as you can get). he started his career in Korea as an actor- before that he had modelled in Taiwan and Hong Kong. When he played Dr. Kim in the classic MY LOVELY SAM SOON he had not yet learned Korean although he did do so afterwards. After doing several memorable roles in Koea he returned to the US in 2009 where he had landed a role in X-MEN "WOLVERINE" which is one of the best films in that franchise and also the TV series THREE RIVERS. He has been a part of US television and film ever since. He does occasionally make appearances in Korea, you could have seen him in a cameo role in DEAR MY FRIENDS, to give an example.
His last significant Korean role was in THE FUGITIVE: PLAN B.

I most recently saw him in the role of Lan Mandragorian in the Amazon adaptation of THE WHEEL OF TIME. He is still extremely good looking.

SEDUCING MR. PERFECT was one of the first Korean movies that I ever watched. It is a classic.

I actually watched him in most of the roles you mentioned, including the terrible US TV series, Three Rivers, which I sat through because he was in it and the last significant thing he's done that I've seen. I thought his Kdrama characters were much more interesting, so have been hoping he'd do another more substantial one despite the smaller market (SK vs US). He's attractive but not my eye candy type, so I actually liked his American take in acting interpretation in Kdramas that I found more interesting.

We have Amazon prime and so we got to watch him in the first season of THE WHEEL OF TIME where he plays a major character- he was quite good there.

Truthfully, I have seen very little of his American work- he mostly does shows that I did not watch even when I was watching American TV.

What I'm watching:

_ Shining inheritance (24 out of 28). I thought this was a rom-com but I quickly realized it was a makjang without almost any comedy element. Makjangs are not my favorite genre, in fact the only makjang I had watched (and liked) was King of Baking.
I have developed a bit of SMLS in Shining inheritance, by the way, and I'm someone who usually roots for the male leads in love triangles.

Western shows:

_ Queen Charlotte (3 episodes so far). Stunning production, but too many sex scenes, which I'm not a fan of. But it's not a surprise, having watched S1 and S2 of Bridgerton.

Waiting for King The Land and See you in my 19th Life, but I don't know what to do: live watch or waiting yo binge-watch? That is the question 🤔

Looking at the feedback it depends; a binge watch may be the way to go as you can ride out the early episode issues and get into the main story. However, if you love the banter in the comments when people have strong opinions and I think we will get lots of feedback on both shows due to the very high expectations after a long period with very few good shows, then live watching is the way to go.

I am a binge-watcher, but I sometimes check the comments while I watch a show, and I'm always amazed at how much people miss or forget when they live-watch.
Sometimes I see comments being angry at a plot hole, wondering about a new character, confused about a point, when I have seen it clearly explained 4 episodes back. It is understandable to forget after a few weeks, or even miss it completely when you are watching many shows, but on the whole, this has proved to me time and again that binge-watching is the way to go for me.

Yes in Race I saw a pregnancy test and remembered at the time thinking who knew you had a partner I wonder why they are introducing this line with a minor character and then promptly forgot about it. So even when I saw her acting pregnant later and I vaguely remembered a pregnancy test but still assumed it was another drama!

Lol at assuming it was another drama! 😄

1

A lot of young Korean adults still live with their family. So at work would be a better place to do it.

I guess it's about the flow too, once she got the courage to buy a test, maybe she didn't want to postpone it and make it fast.

2

I'm a confirmed binge-watcher—I haven't live-watched a show since the only available option was network tv. I like to become totally immersed in a show, and therefore only watch one show at a time.

I read the recaps the day after watching. It avoids spoilers, while filling in some details I might have missed that would add to my enjoyment of subsequent episodes.

Binge or live-watch depends on the type of drama, for me and it might for you too.

Like, I knew right off the bat that the slow-burn Call it Love would have to be a binge for me because I’d go mental with it dragged out for 8 weeks. I even thought about counting back the days from the live finale and binging the first 14 shows just in time to live-watch the end :).

I didn’t hesitate to live-watch Tale 1938 though. I knew that’d be easy to wait the week. I live-watched Dr. Cha no problem too.

For now, I’m putting these two in this latter grouping—I think that they’re going to be tropey enough for me to live-watch and trust the writers not to string my heart out too badly. However, I will wait until both weekly episodes drop and watch them each in two+ hour stretches. I could never-ever do just one hour/day.

If, however, these shows start to mess with my feelings too much…believe it or not, it’s better for me to just stop watching and wait until I can finish the show all the way to the end.

That was about me, and you asked about you…but I hope you can find a parallel or two!!

We are still watching Sell your haunted house but the storyline is becoming slow and bland. I do not care for the construction-corruption scheme. And though it is nice to have a respectful ML, this one is much more a follower.
We have started One spring night. One ep is too short, so I'm not into it for now. (even if I'm into Jung Hae In)
I found myself watching parts of cdrama A date with the future for the bright smile and dimple of William Chan. But this seemingly light drama is very toxic. In so more as it is the main characters behaviours that are problematic, and not the one of an identified bad person. She is a stalker, and pursue/harass him until he falls for her. Despite her telling him that she only loved him for 10y, he is jealous. And he asks her to tell him everything that she does. Also, he encourage 2ML to go on pursuing 2FL after she repeatedly said she was not interested. Such "romance" shows worse behaviours than police drama explaining crimes...
I might have a different view on morality, since I enjoy at lot the twisted and twisting Police Unit 38 (who is not the police but a criminals team working with a tax agent). This drama is a delight. Acting and script are stellar. Seo In Guk is excellent as a swindler, and does not overdoes it like in Minamdang.
Somehow it correlates with a sentiment from Numbers, King the land and Can you feel my heartbeats trailers that the current humour is not well aligned with mine... Well I still have a lot of dramas on my watchlist, so I'll have time to see how these turn.

Totally agree with you about Police Unit 38! I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, their relationships, and twisty plot.

I have a particular affinity for shows that depict morality and integrity as gray areas—not black and white. Is it ever okay to break the law if it's for a good cause? Should you feel guilty about rooting for an assassin who kills someone even more evil than themself? I love shows that make me question some of my core beliefs and convictions.

Shall I worry that I've never felt guilty to root for Dexter or Vincenzo ? They are the (anti)-heros so aren't we supposed to root for them ?
I appreciate shows bringing new questions. Luckilly for me, my mundane life is far from killing considerations and the country I'm in has mostly laws that are just.

No need to feel guilty; these characters are not real, and—as you say—we’re supposed to root for them. The subversion of the “knight-in-shining-armor” trope is part of what makes them so much fun to watch. I’m not so sure I’d feel the same way about a real-life Vincenzo or Dexter, though.

Like you, I’m lucky to live in a safe and secure environment. I’m also able to enjoy the privileges that come from my social class and skin color. Unfortunately, one look at the prison population in my country makes it apparent that our laws are not applied fairly and equally to all citizens.

I would be terrified by a real-life Vincenzo or Dexter.
And sadly I'm not sure there is one country where the law is applied fairly to all (even if it way worse for some).

I had no interest in watching King the Land (the leads look like siblings to me, I'm not interested in romance, etc) but then I saw the first episode got a lot of criticism which piqued my interest considering I was JUST talking about "bad scripts" which is apparently the criticism of the first episode: the writer didn't do a good job and it seemed like a cliched problematic '00 drama (which I don't understand what that means). Does that mean a male lead being a jerk to the female but the woman interested in him anyway? Would all that happen in a 1st episode?

I must not know what subversion means because it often seems like people shows to subvert tropes but then they also want the tropes. You *want* the "tortured, emotionally empty guy who comes alive because of the bright eyed, optimistic guy" but then you don't want it that way.

I have no idea what the show is about but I took a guess haha
How off base am I with that description?

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 FINALLY an ending to a drama that deserves the name (i.e. no cliffhangers - yes, I am looking at you, Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist and Vagabond!). Except for an unnecessary venture into Zombie territory in eps 9 and 10, this drama was perfect in every way.

Bloodhounds I did not expect to like this as much as I did. The bromance kept me (binge) watching. Heo Joon-ho was my favourite actor in the "Missing 1 and 2", and Park Sung-woong is one of my favourite villains (although he was super funny in "The Dude in Me" and "Yes, Madam", too).

See you in my 19th life Shin Hye-sun is one of my favourite actresses. Thankfully, this drama really looks promising. The child actors were just so sassy and cute!

*******Spoiler alert*******

The ending of ep. 1 had me in stitches: "If you do not want to give me the job, why not date me?" Man, I wish I had that chutzpah.

*Fight For My Way*: After the long winded discussions on Seo Joon's dramas last week, decided to take a plunge to watch this one. Right off the bat, Choi Woo Shik is giving me all kinds of tickles hahaha! I see both of them (Seo-Joon and Woo -Shik) in the frame and get reminded of the rib tickling real life chemistry of these two best friends in 'Friendcation' and start smiling like an idiot. I hope they have lots of scenes because I have a feeling I will sit with a popcorn pack just to see these two rib each other.

*The Empress*: Started this German series. It's impressive in its scale and textured presentation. But its characters and their body language feel too modern, a pet peeve I have with almost all modern actors who don't get the body language of the people living in bygone era right.

*Suits*: My son is big into original Suits and is mighty curious on its Korean take (I suffered through Season 1 of original Suits and didn't like it). I felt Korean suits did a lot of things right. So that's on the plate this weekend as well (yay for long weekend).

Update on *Fight for my way* - Episode 11 and I am losing steam, my fingers itching for the FF button. I was right about Seo Joon - intimate chemistry is does not raise a storm from him. It did peak at some point and then went flat. And I liked Kim Ji Won better in 'Heirs'. And the other pair is so annoying. Seriously, what's up with them, the guy's behaviour makes no sense. Seo Joon is fab in the fight scenes though. They should have focussed on that more, it would have made for a grittier drama.
Choi Woo Sik was an absolute delight while he lasted hahaha! What a sleazeball and such a cute one that! He played the pathetic entitled jerk so so well LOL! The scenes with him and Seo Joon together were the best.

COMPLETED:-

*Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938* (12/12) - What a thrilling ride from beginning to end! Funny yet heart-felt, macho yet full of kickass women! I hope Season 3 comes soon. 10/10 Stars

*Star Struck* (8/8) - The most disappointing KBL of the year till now. Started so well but ended so badly. 4/10 Stars

WATCHING:-

*Delightfully Deceitful* (6/16) - This one has the most unpredictable Kdrama FL ever. Not that our staid ML is as predictable as he looks either! It's a bit too fast paced at times and also seems to be deliberately confusing the audience, as a result of which the characters don't seem as real as they should. But the show is definitely engaging and I'm in for the ride.

*Bitch x Rich* (6/10) - A high school bullying drama where the good FL is as unlikable as the bad FL. Hope the upcoming clashes are more interesting than the story set-up till now.

*Battle For Happiness* (6/16) - This makjang-style murder mystery is all tensions and undercurrents and shocking revelations. I'm loving it!

*Queenmaker* (7/11) - How is it that every Kdrama I'm watching these days has strong, badass women? This is another one where the men stand around quietly while the women run the world. The political backdrop is a bit dry and the nasty chaebols are as cliche as they come. The show isn't anything outstanding as yet, but the actresses are too compelling and I'm gonna watch till the end.

*Love Tractor* (2/8) - Cute beginning though nothing very exciting till now. The rural backdrop is a sight for sore eyes though.

Three different dramas in a week! Maybe kdramaland is trying to get back my love!

The Real Has Come 01-08 A weekender! And it's kind of decent! I don't even remember why I gave this a chance probably the contract marriage trope and somebody's recommendation. The main couple is likable, it's not draggy and some of the misunderstandings were actually funny. I'm surprisingly addicted to it and curious if it will keep me interested for the long run.

King the Land The title itself is absurd so I should have known the drama would be silly. It's not offensive in the craziness but this kind of absurd comedy is not my style, the crazy just takes you away from the drama. Well it got a chance for the entire first episode which is more than most previous dramas from this year.

See you in my 19th Life This was one of the best first episodes in a very long while. Maybe the secret is to go in with low expectations! I like the cast but was waiting for the crazy to begin and instead caught myself very emotionally invested on the kids and the older niece. I didn't even remember the adult actors and wish they had been only after this first episode. The premise was fantastical enough that drama seems interested in exploring it instead of throwing some killer just to spice it up, at least in the beginning. The reincarnation trope is a better too. That silly idea of past lives with the same face? Not here. Superficial encounters between children that lead to obsessed adults? Far from it. It was so natural and nicely done that I didn't even mind when the girl turned into a stalker. Keep up the good work drama!

My 19th Life - an absolute stunner giving you so many feels!!!!

I can’t help but tearing up throughout once the story is set up - which is clear and clean storytelling with all the reincarnation rules conveyed succinctly and back story told charmingly and sensuously. Love, love it - will rewatch today before Ep 2 comes tonight.

What an intense 12 hours drama watching! Finished Dr Kim S3 Finale which is as great as it can get. Will there be a S4 now that the WHOLE team is back at Doldam? I will watch it for sure.

Then I started King The Land but, unfortunately, Ep 1 is pretty ordinary. I think the trailer has all the best bits making this premier less than lackluster. It looks like a long road to catch up.

My 19th Life is on the other hand so winning that it might be the best drama this year. And, how lovely to see the reunion of our Queen and her Court Lady! I almost screamed when their scene came up even though I know they are both cast here.

The wrist grabs, the prevalence of teen suicides or school bullying, violence and explicit sexism in the work place, the love triangle and money envelop threat can become background noise once you have seen a few dramas.
