Jung So-min reunites with Mom’s Friend’s Son Jung Hae-in

Jung Hae-in, Jung So-min

tvN has announced the full lineup for its romantic-comedy Mom’s Friend’s Son, starring Jung Hae-in (D.P. 2) and Jung So-min (Alchemy of Souls) as the friends-to-lovers leads. The upcoming drama is touted as an “around the neighborhood” romance and will showcase not only the main pairing but a whole slew of colorful characters that live in the town.

Jung Hae-in will play architect Choi Seung-hyo, the titular “mom’s friend’s son” (a colloquial term that references the perfect son who is good at everything). Handsome, well-mannered, and accomplished, Seung-hyo is the definition of flawless, but the only stain on his otherwise spotless life is childhood friend Bae Seok-ryu, played by Jung So-min.

If Seung-hyo is the “mom’s friend’s son” of the town, then Seok-ryu is the “mom’s friend’s daughter.” On the road to success, Seok-ryu worked as a product manager for a large company, but one day, she broke. As she tries to reboot her life, she crosses paths with Seung-hyo, and both their days of peace turn into a clash of embarrassing childhood secrets and budding new emotions.

Playing the third musketeer in the friend group is Kim Ji-eun (Branding in Seongsu) as Jang Mo-eum. As a huge Spider-Man fan, Mo-eum followed in her hero’s footsteps and became a paramedic who saves people’s lives. She gets her own love interest in the form of fact-checking, responsible journalist Kang Dan-ho, played by Yoon Ji-on (My Lovely Liar). He moves in next door to the unpredictable Mo-eum, and the two of them experience a sudden change to their routine.

The rest of the cast include veterans such as Park Ji-young (The Matchmakers) and Jo Han-chul (Gyeongseong Creature) who will be playing Seok-ryu’s parents as well as Jang Young-nam (Captivating the King) and Lee Seung-joon (Doctor Slump) who will be Seung-hyo’s parents. The moms, in particular, are polar opposites of each other and have a bit of a rivalry themselves.

The upcoming show will be a reunion for the creative team behind Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha with PD Yoo Je-won (Crash Course in Romance) at the helm and writer Shin Ha-eun penning the scripts. While no official date has been released, Mom’s Friend’s Son will air sometime later this year.

Left to right, top to bottom: Jung Hae-in, Jung So-min, Kim Ji-eun, Yoon Ji-on, Park Ji-young, Jo Han-chul, Jang Young-nam, Lee Seung-joon, Jeon Suk-ho, Kim Geum-soon, Han Ye-joo, Lee Seung-hyub, Shim So-young

Now I understand the title better.
The casting is spot-on all round. Park Ji-young vs Jang Young-nam. I feel satisfied with this aspect of the casting. After CCIR and Sejak, I know JYN can take PJY's heat with ease.

Also excited for Yoon Ji-on. Be better than My Lovely Liar for him. chebal

So is ‘mom’s friends daughter’ is perfect or not?
Why is she a stain in his life?
I love a good friends to lovers trope! Love the casting.

I hope it doesn’t undergo multiple title changes before end of year and become ‘Lovely son’ 🙃

Regrettably, it looks like they've already renamed it "Golden Boy" 🙄

Mom’s Friend’s Son is such a to-point Korean term. Golden Boy sounds just like any other titles.

LOL As a Chinese-Canadian with a super traditional (extended) family— regardless of how much the elders INSIST they’re very “open” to some things— I feel like this term is actually quite ubiquitous to most, if not all, (South) East Asian cultures 😅😅😂😂

There’s even a song about the subject

Lol, of course there's a song! So funny!

@zindigo
The saying goes is that “There’s an app for that…” for most—if not all— things in civilization and city life now, but think the same could be said about life situations that “There’s a song for that” LOL

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't actor Lee Seung Gi declared as the quintessential 'Mom's friend's son' for all this while, eh? I love this phrase!!

As a South Asian, we have our own version too.... something equivalent to, & along the lines of 'The son of Mr. Smith' who's good at everything under the sun. Nonetheless, rather than being a matter of pride for the community... this proverbial son is often the one making the rest of us feel inferior, because nasty aunties just would not shut up about our inadequacies next to this Golden Boy. Good ol' times! :P
Ah.... Asians are the same everywhere! xD

Once again the English title is pointlessly changed. I've become quite the rebel in refusing to use the bad titles! 🤨

Really love the cast but seriously hated Cha Cha Cha... ugh!
Infact this worries me a lot: "The upcoming drama is touted as an “around the neighborhood” romance and will showcase not only the main pairing but a whole slew of colorful characters that live in the town."
I usually hate "colorful characters" in dramas.

I reluctantly agree with your last sentence.

Too many "colors" definitely spoil the palette. 🎨

I like colorful character dramas when done well, which Cha Cha Cha, I agree, was not. But I'm in for the cast if nothing else on this one!

Love the leads so its a will watch for me. Maybe each pairing will have their own story so we'll have more love to go around instead of a triangle angle!

1. Good that we won't have a love triangle. 🔺️ 🤞
2. Too many characters are too confusing! And if they try to make them "colorful" - it's time to face palm. Smh ... wait and watch then. Hope the drama is not too "healing".

Yes, please no “healing” through ridiculous amounts of alcohol drinking, screaming, fighting, and characters making nonsensical decisions. I’m sure there will be too much alcohol, though, that’s a given for a neighborhood drama.

I love the title now that I understand its meaning. Brings back memories of annual Christmas cards featuring my mom’s friend’s sons and all their impressive accomplishments.

I’m not excited about the premise. It seems that the small town/neighborhood romcom is becoming a trend, but we haven’t had a great k-drama one yet. I liked Hometown Cha Cha Cha ok, but the second half felt soulless. I think the problem with this kind of premise is it doesn’t have enough starting tension. However, I do love the leads. Their acting is not bland, so I think they are the best choice for a bland plot. I am so happy to see Jung Hae-in in a drama. I think she’s fantastic, and I’ve been worried to not see her in a project lately.

So true re: no great kdrama with a small town theme. I thought finally, maybe Samdalri would be amazing (it’s not).

I can think of a lot of mediocre, boring or downright horrible small town dramas. But nothing amazing. And it’s not just recent. Like I can go back a decade and still not remember a good small town kdrama? At least the women revenge drama trend is providing some ratings but (I dislike this trend too)

This is so exciting! But yes. Keep those expectations in check, etc., la-dee-da … but it’s another JHI romance drama!!!

Been on my watchlist ever since the first news about Jung So Min's appearance - she is my all-time favorite kdrama actress.

I'm not a fan of "healing" neighborhood dramas but from what little I have read, this will be focused more on the comedy and the romance. Hopefully the parents are the type you love to love rather than the ones who are buffoons and harridans.

I’ve always wanted to see Jung Hae-in to be a romcom lead instead of a sadboi as usual, so I’m happy! And yay for Jung So-min!

And wow, maybe this will be a redemption arc for Kim Ji-eun. Hopefully she gets a better storyline and romance with the Lovely Liar guy and erase all memories of Branding in Seongsu.
