Beanie level: Chaebol’s poor doppelganger

Umi no Hajimari is perfect for fans of \”Silent.\” I\’ve only managed to watch the first four episodes so far, but this might become one of my fav Asian dramas of the year…

For people who are watching it right now, what are your thought? Here are my spoiler comments on the first two episodes, I really needed a place to share:

** SPOILERS AHEAD**

I think this drama wouldn\’t work so well if it weren\’t for Umi and Natsu. Umi is the cutest, and she is a charming character. She\’s also been forced to be mature at such a young age, it\’s a bit heartbreaking. Natsu is a very a passive character I feel so bad for her, but I respect how he at least attempts to be in his long lost daughter\’s life.

I\’m not sure if my feelings on Mizuki will change as we go forward but her decisions were extremely selfish, with such wide ranging effects on her family and friends. I get that it comes from a place of not wanting to be a burden, to hold backl Natsu back… but still.

I love how every group of characters has their own story and motivations. I get why Mizuki\’s mom is so hostile to Yayoi but it still hurts to see. She\’s also hostile to Natsu at times, but I respect the fact that she still manages to find some empathy with his situation.

I wonder if the writer will delve deeper into Yayoi\’s situation with her own mother. Seems like a very cold and unloving situation that\’s had a major effect on her pysche. And ofc, there is the fallout from her abortion. It seems like Yayoi wants to adopt Umi as a replacement for her own child, not for Umi\’s sake. She also keeps pressuring Natsu into a role he doesn\’t feel ready for… ah, it\’s a complicated situation, cause I do genuinely feel bad for her.

I am so glad you made this post. I look forward to hearing your views when you finish it.

Yes I think Umi is a special little girl and throughout the drama you can see why she has charmed all who meet her.

I really struggled with Mizuki’s way of being, I don’t think she changed her approach at any point during the drama. She is consistently doing what she wants often at the expense of others and I feel for those who love her because she really does seem oblivious to her impact. It was how she had been since she was little and it’s a shame she didn’t learn to reflect as she aged. I agree with your thoughts that she could have had a discussion rather than assume the worst. Natsu is a slow and methodical person he takes his time to make a decision but comes in strong. His personality is not a good fit for everyone and maybe they just weren’t compatible and would have broken up at some point but I do think he would have been a good dad to Umi regardless. I also wonder about why Mizuki wanted Umi to know her dad if she was going to wait so long to let him know she existed.

Yayoi is 100% creating the ready made family she thinks she would have had if she had been able to make a different decision. I did like how they showed the choices different people made through the comments in that book in the waiting room.

Natsu’s mum seemed to make a point of assuming she knew Yayoi’s situation but I wonder if she just wanted to create a space for her to think about what she really wanted.

This is my standout J normal length drama. Tora ni Tsubasa (Tiger with wings) is my first ever daily and I loved it, so upset it ended today hopefully the episodes will be subbed and available soon. Hikaru Kimi e is my first Japanese year long weekly and I am loving it because of my journey with The Tale of Genji so it has been a great year for me J drama wise.

I liked Silent and you sold me on this show. But I can’t find it streaming anywhere in the USA.

I wish Gyu-hyun was a good person, because these two are insanely cute together aah

I adore their social media presence, like how they comment on each other’s photos in character.

    I don’t agree that Gyu-hyun isn’t a good person, though! He’s very flawed, but I wouldn’t say he’s bad either.

Also, this really makes me want them to star in a real romance drama together as the real main leads (and hopefully in a less controversial pairing)

      why is it controversial?

A lot of people are very upset with or actively dislike Gyu-hyun, the character Lee Sang-yi plays, because of his behavior in NGNL. So they are not supportive of him in a romantic pairing with Ja-yeon. I’m a major Gyu-hyun fan, but even I will admit that he’s incredibly flawed and that Lee Sang-yi is doing a lot of heavy lifting with the character to make him more likeable than he might be if played by someone else.

I hate how he treats his secretary. Secretary could report him for power abuse to labor law people. I don’t think CEO is deep down a malicious person, he’s just so socially awkward he makes weird/unethical demands.

I like CEO with Jayeon though. Because they look good together and he seems smitten by her.

Like I said elsewhere l, I think we’re supposed to find Ha-jun’s and Gyu-hyun’s relationship cute, and think that Ha-jun gives as good as he gets. The drama may not be thinking of the power imbalance as seriously as we are.

RIP Lee Sun-kyun. Your amazing acting in My Mister and Parasite was got me into Korean and Asian dramas in the first place. My entire family was enchanted by you. You will be missed.

I disliked ep. 8 of Good Day to be a Dog so much. needlessly melodramatic, with all the changes just removing Hae-na\’s agency. they\’re negating what made them so pure & wholesome.
