Sorry @shichybot, the clown has become uptight. I know you like the 2set boys. But this must be done. I must avenge for the PEB. 🤭

DISAGREE WITH YOU ALL. 🤭 this video sux. Disrespect for queen PEB!!! you are all 5th graders for laughing!!! I will have my vengeance!! (I say this half joking, half shockingly serious)
Cello Sonata No. 4 in C Major, Op. 102, Ludwig van Beethoven. This piece was pictured, rather than played, in a flashback that showed Hyunho and Jungkyung back when they were still happy together. Fun fact, this piece is one of a number of pieces that Beethoven composed and dedicated to Countess Anna Maria Erdody, who is a possible candidate for Beethoven’s ‘Immortal Beloved’! Make of that what you may 👀
Piano Sonata in B Minor, S.178: Grandioso, Franz Liszt. Played by Joonyoung in a lesson with Prof. Yoo. This is one of his pieces for the Tchaikovsky competition.
Etude Op. 25, No. 11 in A Minor (Winter Wind), Frederic Chopin. Also played by Joonyoung in the same lesson in preparation for the Tchaikovsky competition.
Episode 12
Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64, Felix Mendelssohn. Performed by Jiwon at the Seongju Daily Music Competition. This is the piece she practised with Jungkyung.
And that’s all! We’re still waiting to see which Tchaikovsky piece Joonyoung will be playing for the competition (if he even competes at all, poor guy!). If I’m not wrong, it can basically be any piece that the competitor chooses, until Round 3 when it’s a choice between two different Tchaikovsky concertos for piano and orchestra.
POLL: Brahmsies, who are we hating the most at the moment? Prof Lee, Prof Yoo, Jiwon\’s mother, or Joonyoung\’s dad? Feel free to suggest alternative candidates if you feel like there\’s someone else!
I wasn’t surprise, she only agreed to making her a student provided she makes the cut, never promised that position to her. It was nagging me in the back of my head. I am more than frustrated with Song Ah now. I am a grad student. You ask your professor clearly what he expects, what my role would be, what would be my future as their student. Did she have nay of those conversations. She is not naïve, she is soft spoken so why dumb her down all on a sudden?
All of the above, and add Hae Na! That girl is so spiteful! I even hate the taxi driver that drove JY and JK. He should have accpeted just one, making up social distancing reasons. Ha!
Ugh, Haena. Picking on Songah like that isn’t going to make you any less miserable, girl! Focus on yourself, PLEASE. You’re an adult, don’t act this way.
Oh man, that taxi ahjussi 😂 Classic case of don’t shoot the messenger!
For me, I just feel bad for Joonyoung’s mum. She’s caught in the middle and I think she just doesn’t know what else to do. I know she doesn’t want to do what she’s doing to Joonyoung and she clearly feels guilty. She needs to cut herself off from her useless husband!
hey beanies!! how was everybody’s week? it was a long and busy one for me! I had a mock trial yesterday that I basically spent the entire week preparing for (so no dramas for me until just now!). the session ended up going on for 5 whole hours, and by the end of it, I was dehydrated and battling a terrible migraine. I got home and almost immediately just crashed from the exhaustion. I’m all better now, thankfully. glad that’s all over!
in lighter news, here’s the cake I made for my boyfriend’s birthday:
it was a chocolate cake with hazelnut swiss meringue buttercream and decorated with toasted hazelnuts. inspired by ferrero rocher!
also, the DYLB playlist has finally been updated with this week’s new pieces:
1. Zigeunerweisen, Op. 20 by Pablo de Sarasate (ep. 10, violin sonata performed at the event hosted by professor song)
2. Sicilienne, Op. 78 by Gabriel Faure (ep. 10, cello and piano piece performed by a student at hyunho’s strings masterclass)
ahh, thank you so much! I’m nowhere near as skilled as I’d like to be, but I’m trying!! hahaha. I’m really happy with how it turned out. I don’t know why the photo disappeared 😂 5 hours sounds crazy to me even though I was literally there. thank god it’s over.
Ooh, mock trial? *shudder* Gives me law school memories (well, I mean law school just finished for me, but I’ve been fastidiously trying to pretend like those three years didn’t happen).
I’m glad the migraine is gone! Hopefully you’re feeling better and more energetic now.
HAHAHA. I feel ya. My law undergrad was four LONG years. I graduated in May and I wish I could repress all the memories, but I’m sitting for the bar exams in November and surrounded by classmates, so there’s no escape 😂
Thank you for the compliment! I’m happy with how it turned out 🥰
Thanks for the tag! Moonlight Sonata is so beautiful. Also, when did they play La Campanella? I do have a vague memory of it being played but I can’t quite remember which character it was??
I can’t remember the episode number (might have been 5 or 6?), but it was played by that awful violinist Jo Sooan (a former classmate of Haena), who borrowed Songah’s shoes for her concert. She was accompanied by Joonyoung’s piano teacher, Prof Yoo!
Thanks a lot for the tag and the link, tomorrow Sunday I will enjoy it to my delight. Today I worked 11 hours and am totally destroyed….
And yes, I can’t wait Monday and Tuesday (well, until Wednesday, taking into account I have to wait for subs) in order to watch and know what will happen☺🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😅😆😅😄
Thank you so much for your hard work! Really appreciate it 💕🤗
Q: sometimes there is some music playing in the bg while the characters talk, I can’t clearly distinguish classical music so i can’t really tell if some of them are part of the ost or some piece 😅
Example: the bgm when jk & hh had that big fight & jy came in & it got worse.
There were a few others like that I can’t remember now.🤔
You and I on the G-String is a nice Japanese drama about music. It’s about 3 adults who start to learn violin for different reasons. They have their lesson together and they help each other in their own life.
our kibum has been discharged from the army as of yesterday (almost 2 weeks early because of covid-19 protocols)! he’s still not officially done until the 7th of october, but he’s back at home and no longer needs to report to the base. not long now till minho is discharged and shinee are together again ❤️
I hope key picks up more roles, but until then, here’s a little throwback to my ultimate scene stealer, the iconic noryangjin idiot!
SECONDED. There are rumours about a Jinki comeback floating around, I wonder if it’ll actually happen… 👀 I kind of want to see Key back on Amazing Saturday. He had such a good time there!
Record of Youth #3: This drama is really let down by its execution and some of the writers’ narrative choices. I don’t think the fact that its set in the modelling/entertainment world takes away from its potential to be relatable. In Fight For My Way, Aera wanted to be an announcer and Dongman wanted to do martial arts, neither of which I would consider to be extremely relatable to a lot of people. In fact, wanting to be a celebrity is probably something more of us have dreamt of before, whether casually or seriously.
The difference is that Hyejun supposedly already made it to the top at one point and then… fizzled out? People recognise him when he picks up shifts at Subway, but he doesn’t have a good pool of social media followers, even though he’s directly associated with the wildly popular Haehyo? And somehow, no one thinks that he has star potential, even though he was already big at one point, and again, is directly associated with Haehyo? I don’t know much about how the entertainment industry works, but it just seems a bit forced to me, like they have to come up with reasons why someone as handsome as Park Bogum isn’t successful and therefore is relatable to us common folk 😂
It doesn’t really feel like we need to root for him that hard because the writers will just find opportunities for him that will eventually lead to his success. There’s no good sense of any legitimate stakes or consequences if Hyejun fails, because we already know things will be fine, and I think therein lies the issue.
I also question the purpose of Jungha being Hyejun’s fan. That, in a vacuum, is relatable. We work hard to make ends meet every day, and fangirling is a nice escape at the end of the day. But once the fangirl meets their idol and becomes fast and good friends with them, the relatability is just lost, and it becomes hard to connect with the character, which is kind of the key point of coming of age/youth dramas.
I think they laid that out early on..
Its HY’s mom.. she has actively sabotaged it while furthering his son’s career..
there is more to it than meets the eye..
but i agree this could be more gripping..
and i can’t get a read on what director or how pBG is interpreting this character..
for now, he is too confident of his decisions and strongly believes that he is the most rationale person around.. there is borderline judgemental trait as well
someone please get this man some comfortable clothing… I know he\’s about to go for an event but he\’s also worn this same outfit like a million times… classical musicians can wear jeans too @wardrobe department 😩
I actually like it that he’s wearing the same outfits. It tells us that he’s not interested in fashion, and that he lives a simple and frugal life. Maybe he will start to wear more colorful clothes as he grows closer to Song-ah. 🙂
I don’t mind reusing outfits, for sure. It’s just, there seems to be a lack of distinction so as to when he wears the suit that seems kind of funny to me 😂
I also likes that he commutes. I’m not sure how much freedom a famous musician like him actually gets, (cuz wouldn’t he get groupies too?) but it’s nice to see him being able to walk freely on streets.
I guess classical musicians are famous in smaller circles. They’re not as widely popular as idols and actors, fortunately for them.*is suddenly reminded of a chapter of YY’s story where a raging fangirl threw herself against LMH* 🤣
That makes sense. Glad to know they’re able to get their freedom
😡😡😡😡😡 @yyishere is posting libel about me!!!!! After I gave her my love And I supported her idea of publishing a book about how great and a wonderful man Lee Min Ho is, this is what she does to me in return! 😭😭
So glad he told her. As much as he might have liked her, I think he treasures the friendship he has with Hyun Ho more. I am curious has to why Jung Kyung suddenly had a change of heart…
I was SO happy when he told her directly. She deserved it. I hate the way she’s been acting towards both him and Hyunho. It’s so selfish and manipulative.
Record of Youth #2:
I liked this episode more than the premiere! I’ll wait for the recap to discuss more, but I guess the things that I’m thinking about the most here were:
1. Do you guys think Haehyo is genuinely naive or more wilfully blind about his privilege? Also, I deeply dislike his mother.
2. As much as I’m rooting for Hyejun, I kind of want him to just go to the army, but I can’t tell if that’s what’ll happen based on the preview for ep 3. Correct me if I’m wrong, but we’re still in the past (2018) now, right?
1. I quite like Hae-Hyo’s mother. Although she’s pulling all the strings, she’s so earnest in doing so. And she’s not hateful of vindictive. She’s definitely classist, but I don’t hate her for it. She acts like many rich people act. They want their kid to be successful too. She doesn’t apologize for it. I don’t like her because she’s indirectly against Hye-Jun, but that’s not her fault. I’m sure Hae-Hyo will have a “come to Jesus” talk with her when he realizes how much she’s doing behind the scenes. And I wouldn’t doubt that Hye-jun’s mom wouldn’t be doing the same if she had the means.
2. I think he does go to army. And we’ll have a time skip where he’ll come back in 18 months-2 years. That would make sense with the time line. I’d like to imagine that he met Du-Jun in the military who encouraged him to continue and becomes his mentor when he gets out. He is the nation’s boyfriend after all. 🤣
Yoo Doo-joon is an idol who is part of the band Highlight (formerly Beast). He’s also a pretty well-known actor; he’s been in shows like Let’s Eat and Radio Romance.
do you think we are going to get the track that
ML to FL: “Now, that i am famous, you have become my fan” .. if she tells him she has been his fan always ?
I think it’s the classicism for me. I don’t doubt her intentions are sincere, I just wish she didn’t have to look down on Hyejun/his mother. That kind of thing always rubs me the wrong way, no matter how realistic it is 😂
My ideal army scenario is for Hyejun to become an army sunbae to SHINee’s Key (who enlisted early in 2019). They become bffs and Key recommends Hyejun to tvn for Drinking Solo season 2 (filmed and produced in much more ethical circumstances) and Hyejun becomes part of the Noryangjin trio, LOL.
I’m wondering what is in this character that made Shin Ae ra come back to the small screen. There must be sth special but when she’s onscreen I just keep thinking she’s so pretty.
I couldn’t either, had to search but I kept thinking that I’ve seen her somewhere. That was in Master in the house and just generally when I’ve searched about Cha In Pyo.
I think Hae-hyo is just naive. I think he probably means well, but, as with most people who have privilege, he doesn’t realize the advantages he has and is so set on believing he earned his success that the thought of his background probably doesn’t even enter his mind as a reason for why he is accomplishing things while Hye-jun isn’t.
It is probably the most frustrating thing about rich kids. When someone doesn’t see all the privileges they had, it makes them indirectly disregard other’s efforts.
“I achieved all this by myself. He didn’t. Thus, he didn’t work as hard as I”
@smaltwalt@nerdy I think the reason I was wondering is because he did seem to ask his mum if she knew anyone at the production company or something like that… but then he accepted her shifty answer so easily so, yeah. I believe that he cares about Hyejun and genuinely considers him his best friend. But still, naive.
I think it’s part wilfully blind and part naive. He suspects the mum might be up to something but he doesn’t want to bother about it, and he genuinely likes Hye Jun so he wants to be successful together. But if HJ ever found out how he got the Arena job he’d probably be mad at HH.
Yeah. I think trying to dig deeper into his mum’s dealings is just too much of a hassle for him at this point, and really, what would be in it for him? He’s riding high right now, so might as well carry on.
He seems genuinely clueless and no that doesn’t make me warm up to him to the least bit or make him like me. At least a moderate amount of self awareness is a good thing and can come in handy. The mother at least knows that and is doing everything that she can to help her son succeed which isn’t too off mark. I don’t hate her for that. It happens in reality. She is classist and fake though and don’t like that part.
Yeah I’m not sure how I feel about him tbh. I think he’s a good friend and all, but eh. There’s nothing overly wonderful about him right now, to me at least. Agree on his mum as well. I don’t blame her for wanting to make use of everything she can to help her son out. She’s a mother, and that’s normal. But it’s the classicism and the condescension towards Hyejun and his mother that rubs me the wrong way.
1. HaeHyo is blind to his privilege and a bit naive on how the world works due to that privilege.
2. I sorta want Hye Jun to get the enlistment out of the way and come back to prove all his naysayers wrong.
Shin Aera is really pretty and I understand why her character is the way she is. It doesnt mean I like her classist attitude though.
Record of Youth Premiere: I\’m on the fence about this. I don\’t think it was the greatest of all premieres, but that\’s okay with me. Sometimes shows need a bit of time to warm up and I’m keen to keep going because I really like Park Bogum and Park Sodam.
Off the bat, I really like Hyejun, but I\’m not sure I would agree with all of his choices. I can empathise with where he’s coming from, but at the same time, I also understand what his dad and hyung are saying too (although I know my delivery would probably be vastly different 😂).
It’s not easy to chase your dream when the odds are stacked against you. Sometimes bowing out is just the best thing that a person can do, especially when they’re balancing the reality of having certain duties relating to e.g. filial piety (a big thing that I definitely relate to as someone who was raised with certain Asian values common to those underpinning the family setups in this drama). That’s probably the position that Hyejun’s family members are taking right now, so it’ll be up to him to resolve those things. Right now I’m feeling like his family members’ concerns are totally valid. Our boy only has 85,000 won in his bank account and he’s working what? Three jobs? Something needs to change.
I’m in my early twenties myself, so the coming of age theme is one that I do enjoy watching even if it can get a bit tropey/overdone. I just question the execution/some of the dialogue that we saw in the premiere. Interested to see where it’ll go from here.
Agree. He’s been at it for 8 years and from the looks of it his family did give him a chance and supported him at the start. Which is why I don’t dislike dad. He’s being a dad and doing what parents do. Worry about his son’s future in the long run. Of course, like you said, maybe he just needs to discuss it a lot more calmly. But disregarding the fact that we are suppose to root for our ML, he does come off a little snarky when speaking to his dad. I would never be sarcastic to my parents lol! I think the writers are doing it on purpose though and one of the biggest things I’m looking forward to (and that I’m a bit apprehensive about) is how Show is going to deal with the whole follow your dreams vs reality dilemma. Here’s to hoping it’s a little bit of both.
I hope the show does tap into the dreams vs reality part because what I’ve seen of yet seems like the parents are valid but he is too attached to his dream. That in itself is part of a reality that most dramas ignore but it is shown here. However, usually dramas don’t show the dreams vs reality divide and I’m apprehensive that it will go the “since he persisted his dream came true” path.
I think it’s very likely that he will succeed, but I’m hoping his success is more realistic that just success because he’s the ML. They did that really well in 2017’s Fight For My Way, where the characters “achieved their dreams” so to speak, but not in this picture perfect way that other dramas tend to rely on.
I’m going to hazard a guess and say the way he talks to Dad is probably a product of a. years of putting up with Dad’s harsh manner and b. resentment born out of Dad’s alleged favouritism towards Hyung. Not that that necessarily excuses it, but on that point, I kind of understand him.
As much as I agree with what Dad is getting at, I think the frustration and fear he has re: making sure Hyejun doesn’t waste his life on a pipe dream sometimes manifests itself in the wrong way, i.e. right message, wrong delivery for the intended audience. Then again, where would we be without the whole Asian Dad Who Can’t Communicate trope 😂
I’m with you on all of this. I’m mid-twenties – sometimes I say I’m in my early twenties, even though technically I’m straight in the middle of the third decade of my life – and I understand the “coming-of-age” theme and usually don’t mind it. I think my problem with this show is that the first episode seemed to strongly push a certain message about individuality, authenticity, and chasing your dreams without including enough complexity. As a result, it came off as a bit childish and naive to me.
I don’t want to make it sound like I hate young people trying to carve out a place for themselves in the world or that it’s bad to pursue goals. But I honestly think a dose of realism is appropriate in a youth drama as well. Real people have responsibilities – to themselves, to their families, to their friends, to the broader society – and these have to be balanced against the pursuit of individualistic goals. What that means in practice is that compromises are inevitable. Now, I’m not saying that the drama has to be make Hye-jun give up or something like that. However, I would like it if the show tries to get Hye-jun to properly grapple with this stuff and tries to portray his family’s concerns a bit more sympathetically.
I definitely agree with what you’re saying, although I do feel like his responses to his family, though somewhat immature/naive/selfish, are not wholly unrealistic/unbelievable. It’s probably a very natural thing to feel resentful of the fact that the people you believe should love you unconditionally seem to be antagonistic towards the idea of you going all in on your dream, even if your propensity to fail is high. It may not be a fair response, or a responsible one, but it’s one that I feel does happen in reality. Not everyone will feel as though the duties they have to others take precedence over the duties they owe to themselves, and I just happen to be on the side of the fence where that kind of attitude is not one that I can really sympathise with a great deal.
Having said that, I do hope the drama goes in the direction where he does realise where his family members are coming from so that they can reconcile/get to a place where they’re more willing to understand/communicate with each other. After all, that’s kind of what coming of age is to me—growing as person and realising how to be better, as opposed to just, success in a vacuum.
Lets be honest, I am 29…and I am doing things vastly different than I imagined when I started a career. Life is not predictable. Your aspirations are far more attainable when paying your bills, medical bills, saving is not plagueing you. We all have to fend for ourselves first and chasing your dream while doing that takes a lot. I hope they can send a realistic message here without you know being negative. I think Go Back Spouses did that super well while Itaewon class was the worst in terms of that. So, lets see.
ok I\’m totally on board for Do You Like Brahms? but I have to echo @callie\’s sentiment and question those weird clothing choices… especially Jung Kyung\’s wardrobe omg those weird dull outfits age Park Jihyun so much…
Lol. It’s too conservative right? Ironically, old K-dramas I would see more exposed shoulders/arms and low cut shirts and short skirts with high heels all the way up to 2013/14. It’s crazy how K-dramas seem to be regressing back now then compared to the 2000s with fashion/etc.
It’s so odd! And there’s no consistency either. Songah’s office wear is fairly youthful and has her wearing brighter colours, e.g. that yellow jacket from the first day, baby pink, etc. But then on the flipside at home—where I would imagine you would want to be comfy, e.g. shorts/tights and an old t-shirt—she put on that odd ankle-length off-white monstrosity with the huge sailor collar. What??
Meanwhile they’ve got Jungkyung in outfits that look like they belong to her widowed grandma.
In 2007, the Korean Television Committee enacted a law that strongly against depicting scenarios like that (bare shoulders/arms/chest/etc). I mean IOTNBO got fined (huh?!) for that scene with Moon foundling KSH’s chest. Its crazy seeing shows from the late 00s to early 10s, with actresses wearing short mini dresses/heels/exposed shoulders. Ex. Kim Suh Ah in I Do, I Do looked amazing (2012) but I feel like now she would be covered up. I also heard the Hallyu wave in Middle East (which is more conservative) plays a role? Although the kiss scenes have gotten much better lol?

DYLB Ep 11-12 Classical Music Round-Up 🎻🎹🎼✨
Four (!) new pieces today! Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7HsPK8BtFMfoFf8N8DnP6s?si=O0Jiz5m1RtOXSuBl1w0qpA
Episode 11
See you all next week!

It’s gotta be Prof Lee for me… The way my JAW DROPPED when we got the reveal that Songah isn’t even PLAYING FOR THE CHAMBER PERFORMANCE.

She is not naïve, she is soft spoken so why dumb her down all on a sudden?

hey beanies!! how was everybody’s week? it was a long and busy one for me!

September 15, 2020 at 3:27 AM
I think they laid that out early on..
Its HY’s mom.. she has actively sabotaged it while furthering his son’s career..
there is more to it than meets the eye..
but i agree this could be more gripping..
and i can’t get a read on what director or how pBG is interpreting this character..
for now, he is too confident of his decisions and strongly believes that he is the most rationale person around.. there is borderline judgemental trait as well

3. I miss my grandfather 🙁 hahaha.
Ally
September 9, 2020 at 5:03 AM
3. I miss mine too.

@smaltwalt @nerdy I think the reason I was wondering is because he did seem to ask his mum if she knew anyone at the production company or something like that… but then he accepted her shifty answer so easily so, yeah. I believe that he cares about Hyejun and genuinely considers him his best friend. But still, naive.

September 9, 2020 at 8:02 AM
I think it’s part wilfully blind and part naive. He suspects the mum might be up to something but he doesn’t want to bother about it, and he genuinely likes Hye Jun so he wants to be successful together. But if HJ ever found out how he got the Arena job he’d probably be mad at HH.

September 10, 2020 at 1:42 AM

September 10, 2020 at 1:44 AM

Here’s to hoping it’s a little bit of both.
wapz
September 8, 2020 at 9:32 AM
I hope the show does tap into the dreams vs reality part because what I’ve seen of yet seems like the parents are valid but he is too attached to his dream. That in itself is part of a reality that most dramas ignore but it is shown here. However, usually dramas don’t show the dreams vs reality divide and I’m apprehensive that it will go the “since he persisted his dream came true” path.

September 9, 2020 at 4:29 AM

We shall see!
