[Drama Chat] The most underrated drama, according to you

Last week, we ranted and raved about what we felt were the most overrated dramas.

This week, we do the opposite, and share that one drama (or twelve, no one’s counting) that we feel is grossly underrated. Underloved. Underappreciated. Underwatched. It didn’t get enough love — whether that’s from ratings, from viewers, or anything else — and now you’re here to tell us about it.

Mine will come as no surprise: A Piece of Your Mind. A beautiful, strange, comforting little drama that got largely panned, got episodes chopped while it was airing, and yet still managed to weave a story I’ll never forget.

What’s the most underrated drama, according to you?

Let the chatting begin!

1. Dear,My Friends (a show centered on old people, though Go Hyun-jung, Jo In Sung and Lee Kwang Soo are in the drama). It went on to win the Best Drama and the Best Screenplay Award in the Baeksang Arts Awards).
2. Recipe for Farewell (A slice-of-life where the hubby learns how to take care of his sick wife).
3. Would You Like to Have A Cup of Coffee? (A drama where a young man learns not about making coffee, it also talks about family, friendship and community).

Mother
A ridiculously high IMDb score
Lee Bo-Young’s incredible performance
Emotional scenes that hit harder than a white truck of doom that will have you screaming “Daebok!”
Probably the best kid actress performance from Yool Heo that I’ve ever seen- right up there with Kidnapping day.

And nobody talks about it nor brings it up.
Maybe it’s the lack of romance, or lack of comedy. Maybe it’s the non-typical plot. It’s has received very little fanfare.
Even Dramabeans does it dirty. If you sort by rating, Mother doesn’t show up as a top rated show despite having a top rating. It’s like the show is invisible.
It got pulled from Viki right after I watched it, so now it’s near impossible to watch.
Mother deserves more praise and adoration- much more.

Yeap, I agree whenever it is a non-romance, it will be treated rather "differently". But I am glad that it won Best Drama and Best New Actress at the 54th Baeksang Award. Additionally, Lee Bo Young won the Best Actress Award at the 13th Seoul International Drama Awards.

I didn't watch this one because I'd already watched the j-drama it's based on, and while that show is also fantastic, I didn't think I could go through this particular story twice. If it follows the original at all, I'm guessing it's both excellent and extremely difficult to watch. That being said, I believe the j-drama (also called Mother) is currently available on Netflix if anyone wants to check out the story but can't find the k-drama version.

Off the top of my head, an underrated drama is one that I enjoyed but was not popular or appreciated for the acting or story. The one that comes to mind had its episode count cut mid-production from 16 to 12 which made the ending rushed. It was not the best drama but I like it: BEST CHICKEN.

I know and I laughed heartily. 😊
I'm honestly ready to talk it out for hurting anybody's feelings.

The thing is, it's not "this show is terrible, why do you even like it!”
It's just that I don't live-watch, so when I start a show I'm acutely aware of the insane hype it's getting on DB. So when the show falls short of that hype for me I kinda sit scratching my head thinking what did I miss. I even rewatch some of them to see if I was mistaken.

The hype might honestly play a role in my feeling underwhelmed. But when there has been that hype and being underwhelmed the show sticks with me. I can't shrug and forget about it like other shows I didn't love. It remains in my memory as the show I wanted to love but didn't. That is why I mention it when these type of posts are up, not at all wishing to bash a show or its fans.

Ask me how I felt about Flex X Cop... Hmmm, I didn't love it... I remember it felt kinda juvenile maybe? I don't remember it really... And I only watched it a few months ago.

Now ask me how I felt about Signal. I can tell you exactly how. Because I LOVE timey-wimey dramas, I love crime shows, but it kept letting me down and I kept being unhappy with it.

I'm just sorry that quite a few beanies were hurt with that post and how my answers came out.

King of Pigs - As someone who is easily drawn away from dramas centered around modern violence, I loved this one to the moon and back. It was so good that OCN re-ran the series on last time as an independent network before OCN became no more. It was the only one they re-ran. But it got no noise from here. I do acknowledge one beanie who was consistent in the WWWs when the re-run was ongoing.

Family: The Unbreakable Bond - Yes, the premiere week is enough to kill any buzz it might want to garner. But as it continued, it proved to be one gem a few enjoyed.

Iron Family - I fear this might become an underrated weekender thanks to the disappointing predecessors.

My Holo Love was my 6th drama. And I found that it has a lot of similarities (tropes and scenes) with Healer. So it suffered more from the comparison than if the viewing were more spaced.
It almost convinced me that falling elevators were very frequent in dramas.

Required fields are marked *

I never watched Healer (*cue communal gasp from multiple Beanies 😅 I KNOW!! Lol) so there was never that comparison for me. If nothing else, I remember liking it for it’s relatively low-key casting but all whom are still really talented actors/actresses and should be celebrated 😊

LOL I remember the falling elevators and the perpetual rain oh my goodness 😱

5

Required fields are marked *

My case is the same because I have not watched Healer yet, so I couldn't see those similarities. Interesting.

2

Well, we all have one (or several) popular drama(s) that we do not want to watch for reasons.
I liked My holo love, and it's music. The actors are fine. It is just that, for me, there is a gap in charisma.
Also, I am much more familiar with the tropes so maybe the stories would look less similar now.

2

I completely agree about Marriage Contract. It stole my breath at times. A rather young Uee pulled out all the stops for an incredibly mature performance. The OTP had such growth.it was a beautiful, painful and yet hopeful story.

5
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I went into it thinking that I’d cry my eyes out for the saddest reasons (and I mean, who wouldn’t think that to be the case, considering the drama’s premise and topic of choice), but I remember coming out of it having crying sad AND happy tears and gaining a sense of HOPE and rejuvenation more than anything, even more than the sad things.

To this day, I still think that this drama and this role is THE role of Uee’s acting career thus far, and I am ready to die on this hill saying so, until I encounter another performance of hers which will top this one— which is a pretty daunting task, imo. I absolutely love, love, love this OTP and didn’t feel their real life age gap at all (18 years). I thought the amount of gravitas and maturity level needed for this ML at this point in his life made sense in how Lee Seo Jin portrayed said ML character.
This drama and this OTP is one I will love and standby forever and ever. They gave me everything I ever want in a (Korean) drama OTP:
Love, going through life together, growth, experiencing very true-to-life situations which are not written for drama’s sake, understanding, compassion, sympathy, empathy…. the list goes on 💕 So I’m not sure why it feels like such an underrated drama, especially here on DB 😅

I'm not sure this technically counts as underrated, but I'm gonna say it anyway: Arthdal Chronicles. It had mixed reviews, low viewership compared to it's massive budget, and I don't really see anybody talking about it. It was apparently popular enough to get a second season (thank god for that, even if S2 really flew under the radar), though it had to deal with lots of recasts, a reduced budget, and the writers clearly having to pick and choose what they wanted to focus on because it was literally impossible to wrap everything up in 12 episodes. Both seasons are great though, and it's among my favorite KDramas. I genuinely loved the massive world the show created, and the characters & stories that inhabited it. Mind you, S1 didn't exactly do itself any favors sometimes, especially with it just not resolving anything and instead ending on massive cliffhangers (not to mention the break between part 2 and 3, and then part 3 not even paying off the very thing the ending of part 2 was teasing). I deliberately waited to watch it until S2 finished airing, and I think this is one of those shows that really works best when you binge watch it. I probably would've been very frustrated otherwise.

Also, I'm not the only one that's just going through these comments looking for what dramas to add to my list, right?

My wife watched ARTHDAL CHRONICLES while I was working and loved it. She was thrilled that there was a season two. I did watch the first couple of episodes with her and thought that they were good.

Dramas I think that are underrated and unknown, at least outside Dramabeans (where practically nobody talks about them):

_ My Unfamiliar family.
_ Live up to your name.
_ Mirror of the witch.
_ 9 end 2 outs.
_ Seasons of Blossom.
_ Racket Boys.
_ The Matchmakers (outside Dramabeans of course).
_ Miraculous Brothers.
_ Into the ring.

Weightlifting Fairy Bok-joo

Its a cult classic for a reason, the performances by the cast are fantastic, the characters are charming, likeable and symathetic.

It does a great job at capturing just how awkward it can be to "grow up", and the joys and difficulties of navigating school, friendships, family and romance as a young adult.

I loved Return of Iljimae which I found when I first came to Dramabeans (around 2016 give or take) because it was on a list of favorite shows for a few of the DB writers. Otherwise, I would have never known about it or found it. Truly the definition of underrated. A bit artsy, and hard to categorize especially since the female characters break some k-drama molds.

Required fields are marked *

His beauty is a theme that runs through the show making for a very sensual drama. And, the female characters are rendered fully as complicated, independent women that live outside of "good" society. But, that characterization is also probably one of the reasons that it is underrated. So few dramas handle women's desire so well. Painter in the Wind comes to mind. So nice to talk with one of the few other watchers out there!!!

Underrated in general :

- The Matchmakers : The Art Director deserved the Beaksang award!
- Into the Ring : It was a nice rom-com.
- A Piece of Your Mind : I will be angry against TVN until I'm 90 years old!
- Extraordinary You : I think EY was a better drama than True Beauty (same PD), the themes were more interesting and the story more original.
- She Would Never Know : It was a nice office /slice a life romance.
- On the Verge of Insanity : It was a great drama without any romance!
- Through the Darkness : I don't get how Kim Nam-gil didn't get all the awards for this show. He was so good.
- Tomorrow : the theme was very difficult but this drama addressed a lot of subject and gave us a tragic love story.
- You Are My Spring : the whole part with the twin wasn't really interesting but the ML was my favorite psy in Kdrama world!

Just from a SK ratings point of view and NOT considering how many comments were generated here at DB a few of my personal favorites with poor ratings would include:
From my early kdrama days:
1. tvn’s CHICAGO TYPEWRITER (2017). Nationwide average rating (NAR) 2.27%. (Cable drama ratings have traditionally been lower than the terrestrial networks.)
2. OCN’s DUEL (2017). NAR: 1.732%
3. MBC’s I AM NOT A ROBOT (2017/18). NAR: 3.2%
4. tvn’s A POEM A DAY (2018). NAR: 1.011%
Jumping to 2024:
5. KBS’s DARE TO LOVE ME: NAR: 1.3%
6. Channel A’s CINDERELLA AT 2AM: NAR: 0.48%

Side note re INAR. When the ratings for the first 4 (30 min) episodes were released: 4.1%, 4.5%, 3.0% and 3.1%. ML Yoo Seung-ho was shocked and (from an article I read at the time) said on set he could not look the Director in the eye. My personal opinion is that blame for the poor ratings went squarely on the shoulders of the writers who introduced the main characters so poorly. Folks got turned off early and said: ‘see, ya’. I stayed with it and it became an all time favorite of mine. (Nowadays, perhaps those ratings would be considered ok.)

One thing I can say about CA2AM is the OST punched way above its weight (in relation to its ratings). I am not a music person but there are 6 tunes that are all terrific. Chicago Typewriter and I Am Not a Robot are two of my favourite dramas, I am stunned at the low ratings. The wig of glory deserved 5% on its own.

It’s that time of year again! The time when I bring up for the zillionth time how ridiculously underrated Never Give Up/There is No Gu Pil-su was and is. Y’all, it doesn’t have an English language wikipedia page - that’s how under the radar it flew. It was ENA’s first drama if I’m not mistaken, approximately 4 people watched it as it aired in Korea, and there were no legal streaming services offering it internationally. Netflix picked it up (I’m assuming for peanuts) a few months later and I started watching without much expectation. But then! I fell in love with the kind and goofy ajusshi ML, the earnest but cynical younger ML, and the community they built around their found-family and fried chicken shop. It’s such a feel-good story that centers an intergenerational bromance but leaves room for explorations of marriage, parenting, following your passions, and letting go of your past.

Also, a young Trot-singer-turned-actor (he does great)...as well as A LOAN SHARK WITH A HEART OF GOLD.

I watched it from a Beanie rec (probably yours) and it is amazing! This is the one that came to mind for me too.

I'm here just to get recs and remember which dramas I've had on my watchlist for years. 🙈

But I would say that I feel like Reply 94' became an underrated drama after it finished airing. No one mentions it anymore. It's like only 88 and 97 existed. I particularly liked it better than 97, even tho the extension of episodes made the ending weak.
Even Viki forgot about it, apparently. It's the only Reply that isn't available on my region. 🙃

Anyway, I would say that this friend group, and just the drama in general, does not deserve to be forgotten. It was lots of fun and very heartwarming.

'97 has the best closure, '94 has the best love story (regarding OTP), '88 has the best package.

I feel like the previous Reply series are rarely mentioned, I only see Reply 1988 discussed or recommended, which is a shame. They are all great.

88' is definitely the most beloved one, but I still see and hear about 97' from time to time, here and there.

But for 94' is almost zero, especially here on DB.

Me too. I love the families in 88 but the romance in 97 is my favorite.

I know, that's why I'm here asking for 94's appreciation, because I know everyone likes the other two more.

2

LOL sorry my reply sound kinda cold, I should've used emojis. 😂

2

Honestly I avoided watching 94 because I witnessed the shipping rants and disappointments and I kinda felt scared 😅😄
Then I watched 88, and yeah, we know how that went! 🙄🤣
After that there was no way I was going back to watch 94! 😂

Ohh. That's understandable.

I always figured out who the "husband" was since the beginning, and I was always happy with it, so I got to enjoyed all of them without problem.

I wanted to write reply94 too but didn't because it had high ratings when it aired. Comparing it to reply 88 and 97, reply 1994 is my favourite.

I think there are a few shows like that. They had a great reception when they were airing, but then people forgets of its existence.

Extracurricular's subject matter was dark (prostitution, drugs), but its story was enthralling and well-written. I think the show is mostly underrated because it's a high school drama with a young cast, but it's definitely not your typical high school drama.

'Lost/Human Disqualification'. A quiet, understated, melancholy drama, so I can see why it flew under the radar.

'The One and Only'. One of my all-time favourite "damaged character" romances.

'My Lawyer, Mr Jo'. A lot of fun. And I love the cuddly loan sharks!

I second "Human Disqualification." Such a understated, poignant, yet somehow hopeful drama. The romance is nuanced, subtle, yet extremely compelling. I still think about that almost kiss in the tent.

Queen Of Tears which was not just the story we were told, but also a story about acting; about acting skills, and about authenticity. And about "Life" as opposed to narrative.
I talked a lot about in on my wall, but it seems some of the things that were extra funny because they thematised pretending and acting were seen as boring because it seemed the plot was repetitive. But it was looking at yet another angle of the subject - yet another reason and another way to pretend something.
I am sure that if you went back in with that perpective, there would be stuff for a thesis, - and for more wonder and laughs, as Kim Soo-hyun cries first hilariously, then heartbreakingly, or needs to act sad, then happy, loving, but then cold, then hot, then drunk ... either to make his wife love him, or to set her free.
That aspect is at one time so awesome, funny, and chilling, and I don't think it is appreciated enough.
THere are lots of other K-dramas that I like, but they are liked by a lot of other people, too, so I wouldn't call them "underrated".

I wouldn't call it underrated because it was highly viewed. But I agree I think it was very good and didn't deserve all the criticism. I enjoyed the way the story unfolds.

There is, but speaking for myself, I try to limit my interactions about Kdramas strictly to DB, because most other sites/platforms are either too intense or too huge or too modern for me to be able to leisurely enjoy my hobby.

Case in point, King the Land, which I know zero about how it was received on other platforms, and I had absolutely no intention of picking on you for choosing.

It just made me laugh seeing it as overrated when not a day goes by without someone criticizing it on DB.

I understand that to people who know more about dramas on other platforms these types of posts and comments come out weird, which feels similar to how beanies feel on the Weekly ratings posts seeing how the Koreans react to the dramas.

For me Dramabeans, it's just the opinion of people. For me, it's easier to "judge" unrated and overated with the ratings, the buzz and the awards (except the channel's ones).

Not everyone shares the same thought and interest, as you. If you had a different interest/different genre/different platform I don't really care and bother cause I really believe

And I don't find it weird, my first impression is someone who is trying to belittle others, particularly someone who don't like dramas with chaebol romances.

Oh...it is not the same as the ratings.

It was really good for a specific set of good; as Cecile touches on, it was a drama that highlighted emotions. So anyone that wanted something plot/narrative heavy was disappointed. People often criticise shows and (and endings) because it is not the show that they want. It can be hard to separate criticism/how you feel about a show between the thing that You Want and the thing that the Director Made.
Also, many shows make an effort to give you bits of everything- See Shakespeare, tragedy with interspersed comedic scenes-and people get used to this form of narrative and are surprised when a play form more similar to that of the Ancient Greeks is used. (See Euripedes use of psyshological dramas)

The one for me is the dramedy Incarnation of Money (2013, yikes). First time I ever noticed the name Yoo In-sik, director; and writing team Jang and Jung. First time I ever saw loveable, quirky senior actress Kim Soo-mi, may she rest in peace. It was one of Kang Ji-hwan's and Park Sang-min's last successful dramas. I was crazy about IoM then even though it didn't set the world on fire, and it's stayed high on my re-watch list. I recognize some of the same elements now in Kim Jae-bum's hit dramas like Chief Kim and Fiery Priest.

Was On the Way to the Airport underrated when it was on air? It aired a year or two before I began watching kdramas. When I finally watched it, I loved it. Melancholy, sad, frustrating, lovely. Lots of depth. I never see it mentioned at all anymore. I highly recommend.

I am also a diehard "A Piece of Your Mind" fan! It is one of my fav Asian dramas of all time and I will never stop talking about it lol. I think it just came at the right time in my life - it was so soothing and calming and beautiful. I would say that despite some tough material in the plot, it's a healing peace.

The characters were charming and their stories so moving, the cinematography was gorgeous and the OST is still on "On Repeat" playlist to this day.
