News bites: July 16, 2024

Kim Jung-hyun

  • Marking my calendar for this fall, KBS’s next weekender Iron Family has confirmed their lead, with Kim Jung-hyun (Kokdu: Season of Deity) playing the bumbling, local rich boy who has an unforgettable encounter with the dry cleaners’ daughter. Following Beauty and Mr. Romantic in September, the family drama also has me intrigued with writing by Seo Sook-hyang (Greasy Melo, Jealousy Incarnate) and PD Sung Joon-hae (Bravo My Life) directing. [News]

  • Im Se-mi (The Whirlwind) and Kwak Shi-yang (Flex x Cop) have been added to the cast of tvN’s He’s the Black Dragon, joining Moon Ga-young (The Interest of Love) and Choi Hyun-wook (Twinkling Watermelon) in our story’s office setting. Aiming to release in early 2025, production has PD Lee Soo-hyun (Delightfully Deceitful) at the helm with scripts by Kim Soo-yeon. [Osen]
  • Although I hoped for a little more story crumbs in tvN’s first teaser for Love Next Door, even my grumbling self can’t deny the cuteness that is Jung Hae-in (D.P. 2) and Jung So-min’s (Alchemy of Souls) friendship growing up. Also starring Kim Ji-eun (Branding in Seongsu) and Yoon Ji-on (My Lovely Liar), the rom-com will be launching on August 17. [Newsen]

  • After putting a hold on their Wednesday-Thursday drama programming following Bad Prosecutor near the end of 2022, KBS announced that they’re shifting gears and reviving the time slot for Perfect Family in August. Starring Kim Byung-chul (Doctor Cha), Yoon Se-ah (Sweet Home 2), Park Joo-hyun (The Forbidden Marriage), and Kim Young-dae (Moon in the Day) among others, production for the upcoming mystery is being led by Japanese filmmaker Yukisada Isao (The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese). [KBS]
  • Speaking of KBS, it looks like the 2024 season of Drama Specials is also in the works with Hong Jong-hyun (Race) and Oh Seung-hoon (Uncle Samsik) reportedly cast in the short drama, Look for Handsome (roughly translated). As fellow members of a disbanded, no-name idol group, the story will have Oh looking for the missing Hong in order to restart their music career. [iZE]
  • New character posters have dropped for U+ Mobile TV’s No Way Out: The Roulette (which will also be streaming on Disney+) showcasing the mystery-thriller’s heavy-weight main cast. Starring Jo Jin-woong (The Good Bad Mother), Yoo Jae-myung (Uncle Samsik), Kim Mu-yeol (Sweet Home 2), and Yeom Jung-ah (Cleaning Up) among many talents, the mystery-thriller premieres on July 31 this month. Hopefully the next weekender will not feature yet another awful, horrible mother.

After allot of complain from Knetize KBS have reduced episodes from 50 to 36 for weekends dramas starting with Iron family. Let see if this gonna tighten the story and move parts more quickly.

That's good news. I think even the best writing and directing teams struggle to fill so many episodes without resorting to filler, repetition, and poor characterization. I haven't loved a weekender in years, and have given up on them for the most part, but would be thrilled if this one finally brings me back. At the very least, I hope it's a good project for Kim Jung-hyun; he deserves one.

Couldn't agree more. Sometimes poor characterisation comes about because they're trying to fill the time! They get characters doing random things just for entertainment value rather than staying true to what that character would in fact do.

After what he did to soohyun and seo yeji lmao. His dramas will flop for sure

The premise ("bumbling, local rich boy") might be enough to get me to watch a handful of episodes and reducing # of episodes is a plus. But if they insist on the same stale format (stupid, brain-dead ML and FL, evil in-laws and evil SML or SFL, then it will be a drop.

That’s good news for the viewers but I bet it would adverselynaffect the salaries of the actors, the bulk of whom are unlikely to pull huge salaries anyway.

I wonder if they will gain by being able to do other dramas, promos for their brands etc which may have been an issue when they were unavailable for 6+ months of the year.

'Not moving the story' has not been the case with the current weekender, although perhaps we would not be seeing a reprise of mom selling her daughter if there were fewer episodes.

'Horrible mother syndrome' stems from and is due to a fundamental failure to understand the audience for weekenders. It has also meant sucking up time to the neglect of the side couples. Sometimes those are actually the most charming and endearing stories in the drama.

The problem isn’t just with the 50 ep count but the shortcomings are inter-related. The over-reliance on the shrieking and vile female arch-type (which should be banished from existence), the lack of an enduring story-telling framework, filling the eps with too many background actors with minimal depth and too many actors talking to themselves ad nauseam are some of these problems.

I whole heartally endorse your proposal to permanently ban Vile Shrieking Women from all dramas and weekenders in particular. Let me second your motion.

The thing is that the great weekenders of the past did not have Shrieking Vile Women and hair pulling was definitely minimal. In FIVE CHILDREN the FL comes close a couple of times but instead of hair pulling she dumps a lot of flour on people (mostly by accident on the ML) in what was a genuinely comic moment.

I cannot recall a single such woman in ONCE AGAIN- sure we get biases demonstrated and disapproval at times, etc. but nothing like a shrieking woman.

The mother in FATHER IS STRANGE is nothing short of a saint.

IN looking back at these shows it has become apparent that the insertion of awful mothers is causally linked to the decline in the side relationships- their evil ways simply suck up too much time. At least in BMR we have the sociopathic mother balanced by the equally sociopathic 2nd male lead. Thay is good if only that it cancels out the idea that women are bad by transmuting it into a more equal 'some people are bad' but it does not really improve the story as a whole and only contributes to keeping what should really be an ensemble show into one that is out of balance.

What we are seeing here is essentially a fad and probably one encouraged by the executives at KBS. This is apparently what they want, and the way weekenders are now supposed to be written. Which is undoubtedly true if your goal is to bleed audience share.

1 is definitely not a weakender. Casting is never a guarantee for top acting so I'm besotted by the writer and director. This one is not to be missed.

Calenders marked.

3. Not the uniforms please. Jung So-min, yes. But Jung Hae-in? I have to unsee that.

4. A Park Byung-chul and Yoon Se-ah reunion is a treat. Those two complemented each other in SKY Castle.

5. Kim Mu-yeol. I do hope he gets space to flex his chops here. I scramble to find his scenes in many of his previous works of late, save for Grid.

A part of me wanted them to cast younger actors for the high school parts. Both at Doctor Slump and Love Next Door, the main cast isn't so convincing in playing 18-year-old students.

As previously promised this Jung So Min fangirl is eager for any and all crumbs for this drama. Thank you for sharing the teaser.

I think the problem with KBS dramas isn't the slot but the plot. Love Song for Illusion, Nothing Uncovered and Dare to love me have a weak plot in common. Even if we take a look at last year's dramas, most had a good beginning but went downhill along the way (Oasis/ My Perfect Stranger/ My Lovely Boxer), some where already weak from the start (Brain Works) and only The Matchmakers ended up being a hit.

For KBS epic sageuks, I watched King of tears, Goryeo Khitan war, and River where the moon rises. For king of tears, the ones who stole the show for me were Queen Min and the one who played the step mother. I couldn't wait for Goryeo/khitan war to end. And as for the last one, while I cut the show some slack for changing the main actor out of the blue, I don't find it satisfying.
BTW, I forgot to mention in the first comment "Heart Beat" that is a major disappointment for almost everyone.

For the first time in ages, I am excited to read about a new weekender, as it badly needs a good script, a better female lead (she is the main reason I couldn't watch the recent one, and also one of the reasons I gave up watching Doctor Lawyer and Kokdu: Season of Deity.

• He's the Black Dragon might be worth checking out

• Still pained that they changed the great title Best Friend's Son to the bland and unimaginative Love Next Door

• Think I'd like to see No Way Out

The problem with me is that for a long while now I've seen dramas I've been interested in watching, then when they start airing I can't bring myself to watch them. The few I start I lose interest in very quickly.

And still I persist in keeping an eye out for upcoming dramas. Tsk tsk

I am super excited for Iron Family! And Seo Sook-hyang is the reason as she has written numerous dramas that I love / like - from Lawyers of Korea in 2008 to Pasta, Miss Korea, and my favorite romcom of all times: Jealousy Incarnate. I tried Wok of Love but honestly cannot stomach Jang Hyuk losing the girl to Lee Jun-ho (sorry to all his fans). Then I’ve been waiting and waiting for her next drama - the space sci-fi one with GHJ and LMH which still has no airing date.

She could do family weekender well if you look at how successfully her blending the multi-families and generational relations as well as workplace dramas so seamlessly in in JI with fun and aplomb. I think JI can certainly have room to fit in another 4 episodes - in addition to its 24-ep run - to ‘complete’ the relationships outside the main couple. It’s therefore good to know Iron Family is 30 eps.

I hope KJH could recover his career here. He is a good actor and what happened personally sounded like a victim himself of the circumstances, bearing in mind that we have no way to know the true story.

*rolls eyes* People thinking that KJH did not suffer enough for whatever happened between him and SYJ must've been living under a rock of the size of Everest. Granted, I don't think she deserved such a terrible fall from grace either, because celebs personal mess should stays private and not affect their livelihood this much, imo. If throwing a fit or few on filming set was a valid reason to ruin actor's career with no chance of revival, 90% of them would've have to retire asap lol. In conclusion, I am no moral police and cringe hard at everyone who think themselves all that knowledgeable and holy to throw around insults and wish people they never met to get jobless. Imagine yourself being suddenly left with no work to pay bills AND booed by the entirety of internet on top of dealing with a particularly bad breakup...

Back to the news, I'm not sure I'm in any shape to attempt a weekender (even with reduced episodes number), but hopefully it will be a nice one. Bumbling rich boy meets cleaner's daughter - ah, the BOF flashbacks! - sounds like a good brainless fun if done well.

Ah! BoF was my exact thought. I was wondering why specifically a dry cleaners' daughter and then I remembered. While we don't know about the rest of the F4 or if they are any but yes, if done well, good brainless fun is a perfect weekender.

At least leads sound like adults, not high schoolers, so no hardcore teen bullying, hopefully.

Idk about F4 - would 3 more cute guys fit the budget? - but I bet ML's bitchy disapproving mom will be presented)))
