Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (June 29, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

javabeans

My Sweet Mobster: This show is a prime example of a drama that isn’t trying to be more than it is, but is spot-on and satisfying at accomplishing what it intends to do. Which is: Be silly and good-natured, embrace a little nuttiness, hit us in the tropes, convey a nice message about treating people well despite their past mistakes, and let its amiable spirit smooth out some of the rough corners. I’m not sure we would’ve gotten Han Sun-hwa in this bubbly, optimistic role if not for her aggressively chipper character in Work Later, Drink Now, but it’s nice to see a more toned-down version of that sunniness here. (Work Later‘s Ji-yeon was a memorable and impressive character, but took a bit of getting used to and definitely not for the faint of heart.) Six episodes in, we’re seeing a teensy bit of humor poking through Uhm Tae-gu’s deadpan mobster facade, but I have to say I really enjoyed the first couple weeks when everybody else was filming a slapstick rom-com while he was neck-deep in a noir gangster drama, which just made everything funnier. I actually worry that the more we head into conventional romance waters, the drier this drama will become, so I’m hoping this retains its simple, silly charm.

missvictrix

Connection: Every week with every reveal this plot just gets one notch tighter. So well done. So well acted! It’s kind of crazy, too, that with all the information that gets revealed and all the forward motion, the mystery still feels so deeply buried. Even more so than it did in Adamas, where I figured out the twist a few episodes before it was revealed. Here, I have no idea what’s going on, and I kinda like it that way.

Dare to Love Me: With one week to go, I think it’s safe to say I’m pretty disappointed with this one, and the dragged out pacing in the final quarter has made me lose my interest even more. There was not enough plot (well, ever) between our main leads, so now we’re in a bunch of side plot weeds that should have been better integrated all along. I don’t hate that I’m watching it, but I don’t love that I am either. One more week for the bean.

Hello!! It’s me! I’m sorry for dropping off the face of DB for a bit there, defs was not planned. I’ve not logged on in AGES mainly because I haven’t actually been watching anything (aside from idol variety show content on YT every so often) and life took over for a little bit. I’ve slipped back into it though with my annual rewatch of A Piece of Your Mind , this time with mum who is exasperated with the slow pace yet is also first one to press on ‘next episode’ 😆 Also started the C-drama Present Is Present which is an entertaining tropefest that’s hitting the required plot boxes well (and is also pulling off the comedic moments well? I’ve laughed out loud unexpectedly at the few funny scenes that have been peppered in). I’m keen to see what the next slate of K-drama offerings have in store, it’s been a hot minute since I’ve watched a live drama I think, and there’s a few new C-dramas I’ve got my eye on too.

I hope everyone’s been well, sending lots of love! And looking forwarding to hosting the book club on my wall soon (Sunday 14th for those wanting to join in! I’ve got a list of those that expressed interest in related threads, but I’ll post a reminder in the open thread the night before just in case!).

So good to see you, Lapis! Watching with parents can be so funny. I convinced my mom to watch one with me (from afar but at the same time)(she has seen multiple kdramas before this) and her first reaction was that it was “corny”! I was like, “Mom! It’s a kdrama! Of course it’s a bit corny!” But she’s happily watching anyway 😂

It's great to be back, thanks Unaspirated!! Watching with parents is very funny and sometimes makes me feel like I'm being observed under a microscope because they can see me reacting - and squealing - over scenes in real time hahahaha

My mum does that too! Or she's like, well that's unrealistic, and I'm like yes but mum its a drama ! What drama is your mum watching with you right now!

Lapis, my mom is joining me on Miss Night and Day (which is pretty polarizing on here) and she is enjoying it so far. I didn't ask what she found corny, but it's a drama so... a little of everything? 😉

I'm honestly glad I'm not watching with her in person because I think I would be self conscious about when I laugh and squee and gasp! Glad that is not a deal-breaker for you though!

And Hopeful, that is an amazing/hilarious thing to say about fantasy dramas! Literally the whole idea! 🤣

Looked up Present is Present and it certainly has an interesting synopsis! Seem to be a short watch too (for c-dramas) with only 16 episodes. Makes me want to check it out now!

Helloooooo Lapis!!! 🤗♥️ I missed seeing you here on DB!! I hope everything is going well and that you're doing well. Even if you're not watching anything, you can always say "hey" - no drama required! 😊 Ooh I have Present is Present on my Watchlist for when I finish The Double! It looks like the melo-makjang-Cdrama version of Lovely Runner?? Glad it's fun so far!! Hopefully some of the upcoming dramas are just what you're looking for! Related, if it's available in your area, I think you'd love My Sweet Mobster 🥰

Hello Hopeful, it's good to be back!! Thank youu and likewise, I hope things are well with you 🥰 ❤️ And yes, totally, I've got to learn to feel comfortable being active here without feeling FOMO or 'useless' if I'm not actually watching anything!

I've got the Double on my list after I finish Present is Present hahahaha - it is very much a makjang C-drama version of Lovely Runner, that's such a good description, and I think you'll like it too (plus it's short so plot won't drag its feet). I'm going to start Sweet Mobster too, was reading the comments in the recap thread and they seem to be 🌟

But YES, whether you're watching old, new, or nothing, this is such a nice space, and it's always nice to chat - about dramas or not! Ooh very excited for that mini review of Present is Present (and its short episodes), and you are going to have a BLAST with The Double!! And I think we're being blessed with some truly excellent MLs this year; I think I may like the ML of My Sweet Mobster even more than sweet Sun-jae! (I know!!!)

Currently Watching
Dare to Love Me: 🎭🪡 this drama has been simple and sweet so far. I can see why L was drawn to this sweet character. Yoon-bok and Hong-do's relationship has been so cute and nice... I loved how he comforted her, and how he vowed to follow her as she pursued her dreams. A+ boyfriend material.

My Sweet Mobster: 🍭🦞 I love this show SO MUCH. It's so sweet and heartfelt and meaningful. The ML and FL have great chemistry, and their characters click together like two puzzle pieces. Ji-hwan is such a fascinating character, and Uhm Tae-gu is bringing depth and warmth to the role. I'm looking forward to learning more about his story and how he made it his life's mission to help ex-cons stay on the straight and narrow. I've also come to really like the caring and empathetic Eun-ha, and I'm beyond thrilled for the Snow White and the Seven Ex-Cons direction things are taking. And helloooo "locked in a freezer and must keep warm" trope, I missed youuu! 😍

Miss Night and Day: 🌜🙇‍♀️🌞 Dropped. I already ranted about this on my fanwall, so I'll just say about week 2: the director forgot to tell the ML that it's a fantasy rom-com, and to tell the FL that it's an investigative thriller 😂

In other news... Mom loved Flex x Cop and said it was "very good." She forgot she hadn't finished Frankly Speaking, so she watched the last four episodes. After finishing one of the episodes: "this whole episode was a waste of time." 😂 She's enjoying Suspicious Partner now!

I'm still enjoying the heck out of The Double (16-29). This drama is top-tier!! All kinds of High Drama takes place during thunderstorms (yessssss), the action scenes are really good, the chemistry between the ML and FL ✨️SIZZLES✨️, and the FL is an expert strategist manipulating situations and outcomes as she systematically seeks her revenge. I'm not generally a fan of revenge tales, but this is gripping, and I can't wait to see her continue to burn it all down!!! 🔥🔥🔥 I'm forgetting his name, but her Jiang cousin is awesome (*and his pet turtle*), and he had better make it out of this unscathed. If anyone finds a link to the special 40.5 epilogue episode, please @ me!!

I’m getting Knight Flower female lead vibes now? Brains plus brawn minus comedy?

1

reply

Required fields are marked *

That probably would have been fun! Next time! 😄 This FL is all brains - sometimes some humor sneaks in, but this drama is all about the planning, maneuvering, and strategizing. It's really fun satisfying to see her best her enemies with just her intelligence, quick thinking, and understanding of their psychology. (So minus brawn and minus comedy 😅)

"The director forgot to tell the ML that it's a fantasy rom-com, and to tell the FL that it's an investigative thriller" 😂😂 that's funny. And disappointing. I was toying with whether to start it or not.

But I do want to try The Double. 40 episodes though! I can't get used to how long some c-dramas are 🙈

I would say Miss Night and Day is still worth a try - everyone's tastes are different, so the elements may work for you! Wk 1 and wk 2 did feel very different - I actually loved the first two episodes, while there were elements of the second two that weren't for me.

I'd highly recommend The Double! I have a hard time maintaining interest for long C-dramas, but this one is riveting. The action ebbs and flows, but the tone stays consistent, so watching the first episode will tell you if it's worth the journey or not. I hope you like it if you try it!

My Sweet Monster Episode 1&2 - Um Tae-gu's voice is husky and lullaby-ic at the same time. Is that how his voice is on a good day cause it is cool.

Seeing Im Chul-soo here is...a delight. It was a sweet surprise.

One thing I noticed and I'm looking forward to see play out is the character of Hyun-woo. It is clear that Jang Hyun-woo is one Hyun-woo. I'm subconsciously guessing our sweet mobster is also Hyun-woo but he changed his name. It has to be this cause I don't want another repeat of Start Up. It is Kwon Yul I'm (and/or we are) talking about here.

I do love the parental feeling I get from monster guy and Hyun-woo's granny.

He has to be the original Hyun-woo, right? All clues seem to be pointing to him but I worry it's a misdirection, because how can it be *so* obvious? As @javabeans says, I hope the show doesn't decide to complicate things by throwing in implausible twists right at the end.

Fingers crossed 🤞

Player 2: The hijinks are still happening and so are the cons, the major arc is just inching along though. The show needs an infusion of something new, it is getting repetitive. That being said cult scams are always interesting particularly when the leader is so nefarious. I want to see a cult episode or show where the leader isn’t all bad, but his/her followers suck.

My Sweet Mobster: AWWWWWWWWWW, Our OTP is so cute. Ji hwan is very obviously Hyun Woo from her childhood. Ji Hwan’s very very cute and respectful crush on Eun Ha is so GREAT. He isn’t pushy, he really tries not to be jealous, and doesn’t overcrowd her. I like that Eun ha is starting to realize she likes him back. Just Sweetness overload. I really enjoyed these two episodes. As for our hair dresser and legal counsel, good for you. I am not mad.

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale: I’m so sad it is gone. The penultimate episode had noble idiocy, so blah blah. However, episode 10, all the kisses, hugs, and loving. It was whimpering along, but ended with a nice splash.

The Whirlwind: And what a Whirlwind it is. I am 6 episodes in and the back and forth is so much fun. I love the pressure Dong Ho has to avoid corruption, it is so ubiquitous and ever present. Luckily for him, he has people around him who are always trying to do the right thing. He would sink otherwise. Meanwhile, Su Jin is already mired in the s(^t and just can’t get out. It is such a great juxtaposition to watch.

Miss Night and Day: I love how cute our OTP is together. She is a different person, while old, but still so adorable. I also appreciate her competence and her gratitude at having a job. I’m glad the serial killer is on the back burner and isn’t prominent.

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon: Hye Jin and Jun ho are almost through to the other side. I am sad this is ending; it has been a lovely ride. WHJ has been a fantastic and swoony leading man and JRW as always is fantastic. Hopefully it ends well. I have become an even bigger fan of So Joo Yeon who has a fantastic turn as Chung Mi and her cute little boyfriend.

Older Dramas
Scholar Who Walks the Night: *light spoilers but I kept it vague* What a weird/hilarious/entertaining/sincere ride this was! Lee Joon-gi remained great throughout, but I was impressed by how much Lee Soo-hyuk made me care about the vampire overlord by the end. The show reeeeaaaally slowed down for a few episodes - was it around 12-15 or so? But then eps 16 and 17 brought me back with their increased pace and return to action sequences! Lee Yoon and Hye-ryung ended up being the most interesting couple in this show (and not just because the FL was a bit boring). They were both complicated characters who had to deal with their own baggage regarding their respective families, who both made really bad choices at various times, and who both came to pretty satisfying conclusions.

I wish the FL could have gone on a journey of growth or realization too, but she was a bit static while everyone else evolved around her. I liked her relationship with our Night Scholar better early on, when it was more cute stolen glances and secret gifts, and less mindless devotion and arguments about what was too dangerous. They never seemed like they were equals in their relationship, and it didn’t help that basically everyone called her “that child” the entire time. Ah well. What I will remember fondly are Gwi wearing a dragon robe better than everyone else, Kim Sung-yeol being saved by the little girl he saved earlier (one of my fav things in dramas!), and everyone’s flawless eye makeup.

Live Watches
Miss Night and Day: I really loved Mi-jin’s interactions with her mom and Ga-young this week. It’s been so great to see her finally be given a chance and really be good at something after struggling for so long. My money is on the idol to discover her secret next - he’s all but seen her transform - but I hope they don’t wait too long for some of the other characters too!

Just Started
The Atypical Family: Only one episode in and I’m pleasantly surprised to be intrigued so far! I don’t dislike anyone as much as I was expecting too, and Gwi-ju in particular seems like someone I want to know more about. Granted, he’s doing a pretty awful job being a father, but he’s trying more than I was expecting to see at the beginning of this story. Onward!

What I’m NOT watching
Freaking Fairy Tale Show: But not by choice! 😒😩🤬 If this isn’t somewhere legitimate by the time I finish TAF I’m going to find a way of watching it anyway.

It's... somewhat scary, ngl. Blood, dead bodies, discussion of poor prince Sado and his horrible fate in detail... But otherwise camp is so strong you won't stay scared for long. Plus massive amount of vampire abs to lighten the mood even further!

Tbh, I was THIS close to drop it despite my huge love for LJG at Ep2 - horrendous sound editing and everyone's overacting shocked me greatly at the time... I forced myself to continue only to stop few episodes before the ending. That second pause lasted couple of years. Gives me hope that someday I could also finish AGAIN MY LIFE... ahaha, probably not^^

2

Really?? HUH..I'm gonna push it back to watch list then..I also like LJG but it will be hard if it's like this😭😭😭

0

@skiee it's fine as long as you think of it as vampire comedy and don't expect anything more. Also the hanbok game is gorgeous - ML's were among the prettiest I ever saw in sageuk. And OST is quite lovely, esp BEAST's and Jang Jaein's songs.

3

Okay I'll keep that in mind 😇😇

2

Oh yes @gikata the hanbok game is so strong with this one! I was trying to pick a favorite - the white with green flowers? But it’s too hard. They are all beautiful.

1

This is one that I REALLY recommend you watch with someone else - it’s way more fun to have someone to laugh with at all the ridiculous sound effects and reactions and overbearing soundtrack. And then when you hit the super slow points it might be more engaging. I honestly would not call it horror at all, though there is a good amount of blood. No jump scares or anything, and hardly even anyone looming out of the darkness. I had a lot of fun watching it, but I wouldn’t classify it as a “good” drama. Does that make sense?

Brace yourself for the commercials though they are very annoying after the first couple of times, the same advert runs through twice. This type of commercial break was the main reason I ended up paying the fee for Spotify because being trapped in a car you can’t escape the room while they play. The other more important reason I paid less begrudgingly was hearing the story behind one of the water charities and how the owners of Spotify invested at a crucial point for the charity.

DROPPED: MISS NIGHT AND DAY (Ep. 3-4)
I think I talked myself out of watching this. I genuinely do like the scenes with Lee Jung-eun, she has magnetic screen presence but sadly that’s not enough of a reason for me to stay. I promised myself this year I’ll be dropping dramas that frustrate me. Also I want to let beanies who enjoy the show, enjoy it in peace without my ranting 😅

MY FROZEN LOBSTER (Ep. 5-6)
Seo Ji-hwan has shot up to being one of my favourite male leads! The comedy is on point and while I had my reservations about the plot not being able to sustain sixteen episodes, I take it back! Yes Eun-ha can be considered a typical Candy, however I view her more of a Mary Poppins like figure, especially with her being tasked to tutor our ex-mobsters. I also like with every episode we get to learn about their backstories, it’s kinda similar to FRUITS BASKET, which is my favourite manga/anime ♥️

DREAMING OF FREAKING FAIRYTALE (Ep. 9-10)
Sadly not a favourite, I couldn’t connect with the characters for majority of the drama. While I did appreciate Jae-rim’s development, which in my opinion was the best part of the show, a lot of the side-plots and characters felt juvenile, especially the second leads. That said, it seems kdramas are going in the right direction, with comedy making a comeback and hopefully maybe zero serial killers in rom coms?!

🙋🏼‍♀️ I'm still in it, although side-eying the ML's ageism and "old people" aversion very, very hard. I suspect the writer/PD think it's just a clever variation on the usual ML trauma device, like rainstorms or dogs 🙄, which is depressing but not surprising. I've lowered my expectations for the writing accordingly but still want to see what Miss Day and the idol can make of it.

Yay! While I’ve been giving the ML a death stare rather than a side-eye, I admit I am partial to CJH so I may be able to indulge in amnesia if he atones. (Yes, I am weak that way like an old school kdrama female lead. I’m working on it.) In the meantime, Miss Day, keep living your best life!

Very little to watch on weekdays…when are we getting the next batch of kdramas 🤨?

COMPLETED
Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale - The show made me doubt it through most of Ep. 9 but I guess they thought they needed the last-minute draaammaaa. I'm glad it redeemed itself in Ep. 10 with a good 'moral of the story', lots of kisses, and a happy ending for all. Sweet show 🥰.

ONGOING
Dare to Love Me - One more week…

My Sweet Mobster - Been a while since I've found a second male lead THIS annoying. Thankfully, the rest is SO GOOD esp. UTG's extremely nuanced performance. The thirsty deers continue to be adorable - love Jae-soo!

Miss Night and Day - The ML turned super-annoying suddenly. Mi-jin's personality also varies wildly - feels like she's extra mumbly and can't grasp a lot of simple things in the younger version 🤔?

C-DRAMAS
Completed The Double. So tired of the non-ending + money-grab 'special' episode trend in c-dramas. Still overall it was a fun, if slightly overdramatic, watch.

Started Follow Your Heart (up to Ep. 8) - Had a slow start and meanders quite a bit plot-wise but the leads are good together. Always refreshing to see leads who are simply nice and respectful to each other.

Also started The Princess Royal (up to Ep. 4) - Sticking pretty close to the book while cutting out the faff, I liked this immediately. Zhao Jinmai is doing a great job as usual.

I haven't finished The Double yet, but I hear ya on the non-ending + money-grab "special" episode trend. As a viewer outside of China, having to dig around the web for the special episode is really annoying.

I love Follow Your Heart so far. I agree with you about having leads who are nice and respectful to each other.

Yup most online spaces on finale day end up just being a series of comments asking "does anyone have a link for the special episode??" 😅.

Follow Your Heart is definitely making some subtle but important points about gender respect and equality too. It's nice to see.

Seriously, it's surprising how rare it is for leads to just be nice. I think it's why I liked Crash so much because, even though it wasn't a romantic OTP, the leads together were very respectful of each others' skills and competence and mindful of their needs.

Midnight Romance in Hagwon (13-14): So, like, what is this show trying to tell me at this point? What is it even about? Because somehow this show devolved into the same old battle of good vs evil, where everybody is on a clear side, and the middle ground in non-existent. What happened to the realism? Everything is so black-and-white that most of said realism went out the window around episode 12. I am just so disappointed…

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale (9-10): Sigh, another disappointment. These last 2 episodes left me so cold? The plot was going in circles, the comedy was lacking, and I found the way everything resolved itself to be very underwhelming. I like the message of the show, and everything with Jae-rim's family this week was a highlight, but everything else just left me very disappointed.

The Player 2: Master of Swindlers (7-8): Finally a guest star I recognize! Though saying that I prefer Heo Sung Tae's character in Crash is an understatement. Seriously, the villain of the cult case might just be the most despicable villain of the entire show so far. He's guilty of literally every crime under the sun, including the ones you really don't want to think of. He disgusts me, and I can't wait to see him go down next week.

Hospital Playlist (S1: 7-12 & S2: 1-2): Last week I said I found this to be a hard show to binge watch. So, obviously, that's exactly what I did this week, because that's just how my mind works. Anyway, I basically love everything about this. Whether it's the friendships, the main and side characters, the music, the medical cases, the romance, I pretty much love it all. The show is just so calm, relaxing and funny, and somehow manages to be both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the exact same time. This is really making me wanna watch one of the Reply shows next, because somehow, I still haven't watched those.

My Perfect Stranger (7-8): I was really hoping we saved those 2 women… Episode 8 was pretty heartbreaking in that regard. However, I do think the show is avoiding some basic questions. The killer seems to hate women, but then seemingly after decades of doing nothing, he kills the FL's mother and then the ML a year later? Shouldn't our leads at least question the logic behind all this? Also, the ML's father seems fun, but since every young guy in this show turns out to be shady, I don't trust him. Or maybe I have trust issues.

CONNECTION (Ep 9-10) This week had a lot of throwing shame and shade at the main characters as the ethical, moral and evil story edges begin to unravel. This week really hit home that all the characters except Joo-Song have moral character issues or worse. Some, like Tae-Jin and Yoon-Jin, are not as smart as they think they are. Others like Chang-Soo, continue to harbor ugly secrets. It may also lead to Joon-Seo not having a grand plan but a means to “push” paranoia and greed onto his friends and associates to backstab each other for a pirate treasure that does not exist.

BITTERSWEET HELL (Ep. 9-10) Another week of No and MIL outsmarting themselves trying to trap Se-Na but she is always three steps ahead of them. Se-Na’s master plan includes eliminating her own pawns in deadly fashion. We don’t know how much more damage she can inflict on the Choi family but so far they cannot stop her. The writer and director have thrown so much dirty family laundry at us it is hard to see how any of them come out clean. Is this going to be a series where the villain actually wins? Going into the finale, we have not seen much No and MIL working together to save their family. MIL is now in prison martyr mode. No thinks she has the upper hand but I think not.

Yes! That was some unravelling happening on Connection. I came away feeling the same- who can be trusted here? I do like Ji Sung's character even with all his prickly self righteous bits. I have a feeling he's beginning to see himself a little more clearly. I've given up on Yoon-Jin. I get her motivation but still her obsession with money makes her so untrustworthy in my eyes!!

THE LONG BALLAD (CH) —Leo Wu was the draw initially, but now the story has me on the edge of my seat. The story! It has been a long time since I have been mesmerized by the story of a drama specifically (Forrest of Secrets was the last one). Usually I care more about characters than plot, but in this one I keep watching because I want to know what will happen. The story tension is well-crafted.

And oh I have not cried for a drama character like for the Sui General, who sacrifices himself to keep his people and family safe, The scene where he says goodbye to his wife and little daughter gutted me because while he never says “good-bye” his meaning is clear to his wife and everyone else who can read between the lines.

MY LOVELY BOXER (7) —It was my cup of tea, and I drank it up happily. Though I wish it had had one more episode to wrap it up—their reunion and the wrap up was rushed for me.

WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI (7)—I enjoy Ji Chang Wook and Shin Hye-Sun together, but I am not invested in other storylines. Yet? The drama has settled in a bit, but I think it has a lot of unmet potential so far, let down by writing and directing of characters. However, I do enjoy that this second chance romance is not taking the typical route and I love that Cho Young Pil is not bitter or hurtful toward Cho Sam Dal. Was everyone yelling at their screens for her to take him back? I missed the live watch.

Edit: I have since watched more episodes and I am fed up with his father and that his grudge and inability to forgive is the reason they broke up. Get over yourself, sir.

The Long Ballad. What I liked a lot was how ambitious it was, the vision was so big. I also liked the artwork integrated into the live action (even though that may not have been their original intent, it's beautifully done). Also admired performances of Leo Wu, Wa Er, Zhao Lu Si and Liu Yu Ning. The series didn't fire on all cylinders, but what did work was admirable.

You're the first person I know who genuinely liked manhua bits - pretty much everyone else were either ??? about it or simply thought it looked cheap/lazy for a big scale production. Personally I wasn't all that bothered - perhaps too many anime irreparably damaged my vision, heh - but I can see why people would've want at least some of those epic battles to be portrayed in flesh, so to speak. Not everyone can get fully emotionally engaged in drawn forms of media. Or maybe editing could've done better at blending the two styles together...

I also very much prefer this newest trend of making drawn intro/outro for cdramas over more traditional "heavy spoilers music video montage", it's a wonderful upgrade. And many artworks are really beautiful.

Hello again. This goes back to cinema art director's storyboard sketches of a scene. I've seen some of these storyboards from older films. It's a pretty amazing experience because you know what the final product looks like on film, and in the storyboards, you are seeing the original vision for a scene. Much of the artwork was beautifully rendered, full of action and highly skilled.

So, today when I see the artwork being used in these drama series like THE LONG BALLAD and others, I feel like I know from whence it came and I am in awe of the artistry.

Here's an example, visuals that you will probably readily recognize:

Ahaha, such a cute drawing style))) Good thing they hired designer(s) with better skills to work on costumes/makeup/hair...

I think the main difference here is that artists, being literally people with above average imagination and artistic vision, can more easily take those doodles for (fictional) people going through human-like events. But not anyone is like that. As my father once put it: "When I'm reading, I see the plot fully animated in my head". For those who physically cannot do that due to different trajectory of individual brain development, suddenly encountering a cartoon page depicting an important scene in the middle of live-action series with real actors must be confusing, to put it mildly.

When it comes to cdramas specifically, they also do this thing their k-counterparts don't - sharing concept sketches with audience, often in the middle of production or even before filming starts. It can be posters, character designs (final and not), storyboards as you said etc. I find this promotional tactic very interesting because it gives viewers the illusion feeling of being involved in creative process of drama making rather than just buying final product to consume in one go and then move on.

WATCHING AS IF THE WHOLE KDRAMA WORLD IS ON HIS WiDE SHOULDERS THAT CAN STILL HUDDLE

My Sweet Mobster This is a such a great show on so many levels—from the purely nice to look at level to meaningful themes beyond the OTP. The love story is not in a bubble insulated from the world and other people; instead, you see how the couple relate to each other and to other people (and how that also informs how the couple view one another) in the world. How many shows have one or both OTP act one way in the world and another way to the romantic interest? This show with mature gifted and charismatic actors is delivering from giggles and swoons to social commentary—all in an entertaining, brightly colored package. So good.

COMPLETED

Dreaming of A Freaking Fairy Tale This show at 10 episodes of less than 45 minutes each was like a great children’s picture book. It was short and succinct with bright colors, had characters who were quickly but adeptly presented, and still presented a story with a message and with heart. It managed in a short amount of time to entertain and be touching. Good night, Moon Cha Min and Shin Jae Rim. Thanks for a great run.

Non-Kdrama
The Bear, Season 3 Wow. I needed this. Such good dialogue writing— how can a scene with half the words being “F**k you” say convey so much—history, tension, love? I also was reminded how showing the individuality (sometimes considered flaws) in skin tones, wrinkles and marks can reveal how beautiful people are in different ways. I don’t even realize how much the glossy filtering of people making them “perfect” can be exhausting for me until I see a show doing something different.

And the director wasn't holding back on those close ups. Haha.

I especially loved how natural everything looked in Nat/Sugar's episode. Not only because of the situation itself (giving birth), but also because I feel like that episode was all about making contact with Nat and Donna's broken selves/identities and their imperfect mother-daughter relationship.
So I like how messy they looked. I remember one shot that made me think they looked alike, and I think it was all because of the tired eyes with wrinkles and the messy blonde-ish hair.

I have talked about before that the sexiest most beautiful pictures of Jang Hyuk is when you can see his wrinkles, the layers of his smile and the "crow feet" by his eyes. [wistful sigh]
Mostly they are hardly there, because of botox, I was informed.

I am enjoying this and hope the second leads ‘Mr All about the assumptions’ and ‘Miss I think I am all that’ get over themselves sooner rather than later.

My Name is Gabriel
I came for Bogummy and stayed for the Comedian who is the other victim on the show where they have to move in to someone else’s life for a few days. The challenges really do suit the celebrities personalities, the Comedian’s perspective on his situation is so funny. Looking forward to seeing what they did to Wookie in later episodes.

It’s sad that there were people who were literally seen as collateral damage while the power games being played in the name of politics were ridiculous. It’s not sad in the sense that I was crying like often happens in certain types of dramas. Knowing it’s based on true events and seeing the original news reels you know real people died fighting for democracy and yet you also know they were the innocent ones and the corruption still played out long after that day and for years into the future. It was tinged with that kind of sadness like watching the fictionalised versions of the Soweto riots or the Freedom riders, it hits differently.

It was a fast paced drama that will be a great binge watch. I look forward to hearing how you find it when you do decide to watch it.

Dare to Love Me Nothing is goof but nothing is totally bad neither...

My Sweet Mobster Ji-Hwan deserves every sweet, lovely, delightful, nice, precious, etc. adjectives that English subber can find.

Miss Night and Day I'm not convinced by the story with the serial killer and the actresses playing the same character yet. The ML's behavior is not helping...

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon I can't believe it's already the end...

The Whirlwind On my watch list.

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale At the opposite of the Beanies, I didn't like at all this drama. It was between a rom-com and a parody but neither of them and it ended being just a lot of clichés. I didn't specially like the actors in these roles because there is nothing new. I wish Jun finds a simple role where is not acting the biggest jerk and the rich and cold guy...

Starting:

Just Between Lovers/Rain and Shine: This drama is so good it’s very hard impossible for me to stay in Community Watch tempo. Way the best thing I have seen with Junho yet. I have seen some old pictures of him where he looks super cute, but being constantly angry seems to bring out the best in him. This time I really got why he is a star. Being angry, and eating – hence Chief Kim the next best thing I’ve seen with him. (It’s not like he is the only good thing about this drama, but he is the one I know the best).

Miss Night and Day: I am still enjoying this a lot, even if I agree with those who are disappointed that the ML is such and *-hole towards a woman based on her age alone, as if it was a crime against him to have to work with a middle-aged woman. I had hoped he would get the kind of relationship where you rely on an older person’s wisdom – protecting her (as he actually does) while also asking her advice. Only more fun for her actually being young. But at least she has a lot of experience of hardships that he doesn’t know of.
… Okay, that’s not how this goes, apparently. [Sigh]
Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale: Found out Friday night it can be watched at Dailymotion! Oh what crazy marvellous fun it is!
Rewatching:
Destined With You: I have been revisiting those sweet beginnings, with that (literally, but also) haunted rich-kid boy who is more than anything offended at being in love, at being hopelessly, helplessly lovesick, in love, pining. And who is doggedly, whiningly, pettily, steadfastly following his new owner around. (While also being unfaithful, but to whom?)
Finished:
Sh**ting Stars: Fun and nice. I too enjoy have so many couples to ship. I did not enjoy the amount of aegyo. I liked the turn of that at the end, though, and giffed about it on my wall.
Not a K-drama:
Sweet Tooth: Finally gathered the courage to watch this and binged it in two days. I just had to get to the ending. And when I got there, it was a kind of “choose your own adventure” in the way that I could decide how much of the happy ending actually happened and how much was just a story Gus told to the next generation and to Big Man. In any case, I needed to get to the end so that I could breathe again.

yes I was dismayed at the ageism thing in Day and Night because it seemed so out of character with the ML being a stickler for meritocracy and work ethic. Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D / D / D / D-
Did you know that Kim Hyun Jin is actually older than Lee Jun Young in real life? I was quite surprised that the former looked younger while the latter carried himself older. Anyway, the show ended on an absolute whimper as all the nonsense from the 2nd leads piled once the ML got past his trauma. Classic nice 2ML and treacherous 2FL, it’s giving zero.

Miss Night and Day (Episode 3-4) - Mood: D+
I don’t get it, the ML’s already telling the FL explicitly that she’s under witness protection, so why hide the tracking software when you were open about saving your number in her phone? I’m surprised the ML’s ageist given his workaholic personality but maybe that’s the character development he’ll undergo? The killer seems obvious: will the new intern be the red herring?

My Sweet Mobster (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D+
The chasteness of K-drama leads never fails to amuse me, but seriously, the juxtaposition couldn’t be more severe with the random makeout scene they gave to the supporting couple, who despite having minimal scenes actually form a convincing OTP, more so than the leads. But it’s not like they’re so great either, though I think it’s a low bar with the freezer cliffhanger.

COMPLETED:

1. BRAIN WORKS - Jung Yong-Hwa and Cha Tae-Hyun nail it as the Odd Couple duo of psychopathic brain specialist and super empathetic police detective solving mind-bending crimes together. The drama's open-ended final episode leaves room for a second season and I hope there is one.

I actually cackled aloud when the psychopath brain specialist terrorised a boy (who had framed the detective's daughter for bodily harm of another student because she wasn't interested in him) into saying out loud the equivalent of "If a girl says no, I will not bother her" 100 times. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

2. SECRET INSPECTOR & JOY - This is very entertaining Fusion Sageuk nonsense hahahahahhaha! I really do like Kim Hye-Yoon and this is the first time I've watched Taecyon in action. Looking forward to watching more of their other dramas.

3. LITTLE FOREST - Stumbled across this little gem of a K-movie on Tubi starring Kim Tae-ri. It's so healing and I love the food scenes and the quiet contemplation about life choices and learning where one belongs.

CURRENTLY WATCHING:

1. DOCTOR SLUMP, A GOOD DAY TO BE A DOG and BLACK - Onwards we go with the lunchtime viewing rotation.

2. THE X FILES - This is a comfort watch. Very few long-running Horror/Sci Fi series can be considered classics. Mulder and Scully make it so.

3. MILITARY PROSECUTOR DOBERMAN - It's quite interesting, especially Jo Bo-A's character. I still don't like Ahn Boh Hyun (he kinda irritates me with his f*ckboi smirk) so it's like me watching movies with Tom Cruise in them - I dislike Cruise intensely but I sit through an otherwise good movie/series if I like the rest of the cast.

Happy Saturday, Beanies! MASSIVE wall of text below, you've been warned)))

THE DOUBLE: So I didn't have time nor energy to finish it yet, but heard it ended with no surprises, except maybe Youku chickening out the last second and hastily doing HE special to evade fan rage over another wtf finale. Huh, where did this wisdom was last year? Yunno, someone's got to finally open cdrama writers' eyes to the hard fact that “fresh take” of turning happy novels into half-backed tragedy dramas has long lost all its freshness and shock factor... We've had enough!

THE PRINCESS ROYAL: Watched half of Ep1. Good news – show's rather loyal to the book. Bad news - that means FL is gonna be insufferable for far too long for my patience. Drop, good luck to yall who remain!

HISTORICAL CHAEBOL ROMCOM (FEAT PURPLE WEED) FOLLOW YOUR HEART: Oh boy, this is a bipolar mess. Don't get me wrong – it's a very pretty (sets, costumes, camera work), cute and light (so far) show where leads and at least some supporting actors are doing really well... Too bad script is hardly on par. There are so many issues here – pacing, annoying characters (gosh, ML's sister is a real abomination!), ridiculously overdone conflicts, sometimes off-hitting humor, simply moronic bits (burning the whole field of toxic hallucinogen at night? next to village with people? wonderful idea!) etc. Also not sure how I feel about making it basically anti-drugs investigation story – not the theme I prefer in my procedurals. Action scenes are fire though – after the clownery that was wire work in THE DOUBLE my eyes were blessed by the smooth elegance of fighting here. As much as I find OTP sweet together, this show being full action detective instead of romance wouldn't be half bad either. Oh well, I just need to wait some more until SHUI LONG YIN...

LYX is great as usual and only coughed blood ONCE in 20 episodes, can you believe that?!, but his TTJ-esque satanic laugh takes me out sometimes))) FL is fun, even tho I find her writing a bit too emotional sometimes. Chemistry is more soft/warm than scorching, which I can accept as long as there's less of usual romcom BS keeping OTP separated... Futile hope, I know. Second leads are facepalm-inducing – in sister's case it's just character who needs to grow tf up asap, but CL's Commander-in-chief, while finally became a lot more palatable in latest episodes, still needs a lot of work on his acting, esp in subtlety department – all that eye bulging and constant shouting really grates on my nerves. Same with his mountain girl future OTP. Slave boy is decent at least, slightly creepy toothy smile aside. Mom just needs to chill, all things considered.

Plot... eh, is there. FL'swerewolfing shapeshifting is funny and cameo actors are all riot, esp the very first one – boat scene lmao! ML's prosopagnosia leads to both comedy and sweetness (FL trying to copy his view of the world via veil to eyes was very touching), but I must agree with other people that crazy premise is slightly underutilized so far. Do we really need that much of ML's family drama here? As I said, it IS a chaebol romcom by all means, just in Tang era gorgeous aesthetic. Truly gorgeous – wedding#1 was breathtaking, I'd stick around if only to see the next 2!

“Drama news” segment – sit comfy because that's gonna LAST:

- did yall know that Taecyeon and Japanese actor I'm not familiar with are doing gay romance drama – SOULMATE, iirc - on Netflix together? That certainly wasn't on my Bingo card...

- wait, that's not all! The most important to me personally reveal from that conference was Tencent listing long-suffering THE PRISONER OF BEAUTY (!!!) among their “To air in 2024/future” dramas – with a wisely chosen concept poster (no need to remind everyone of controversial FL's face, hah! sneaky) and no specific date, but still! Show's PD, our fellow “let it be released!” enthusiast, even went online right afterwards to tease fans about “believing in fate”, whatever that means... Can we really hope? *sobs*

Yes, I learnt it on DB @miso2019. I am so, so impressed. It's a huge risk seeing how SK audience can go after celebrities, and I hope it's successful for his sake. He does have that 'don't care what people think' attitude which I love and might have stemmed from growing up in a progressive town of MA. No matter the reason, it's a brave brave choice so kudos to him ❤️

I'm in awe of the breadth of your interests here. Your posts are a goldmine for drama fans. Keep it up! Grateful.

5

@cliosservant1846 thank you, I'm trying)))

Now if only DB also also stopped to log me out every other second...

3

Many. many thanks for all of this. I really appreciate all of the work that you put into this. You are much appreciated.

1

The dramas I looked forward to that had been aired turned out to be average or less—nothing to write home about.
So, here is round 2.

BIRTH - Zhang Ruoyun knows how to pick good projects.
PRISONER OF BEAUTY - I'll believe it when it airs. So unfair to the rest of the cast and crew. Is she even trying to fix the problem?

1

@kiara all I can say about BIRTH is that ZRY's ML is in it for a bumpy ride - never understood why would anyone in their right mind want to search for the parent(s) who abandoned them... Even when there's no cinematic dark mystery involved.

Good question. Latest rumor says her personal studio quietly closed down, but this info holds as much credibility as previous ones about her being ready to return but struggling because no producer wants her anymore or her retiring to get married - zero. One thing for sure is that Tencent clearly hasn't given up on the show and all the money they burned for it yet, unlike iQiyi, who already written off her other drama - xianxia with RJL - from their upcoming list and seemingly moved on. Even if she is truly done for good, they might still try to salvage the project somehow - by AI-swapping FL's face with another actress or refilming the whole thing from the scratch... Afaik, Yuning isn't 100% booked for Q4 onwards (or he just lied to us... again) yet and might be available for whatever crazy idea they get. I still feel like the drama could just air-drop one day, like EB and HEROES did - technically it won't even be a legally risky move since she has never been formally banned in the first place...

1

@gikata
At this point, I'd watch Zhang Ruoyun in anything. 😀
*Sigh* The sooner, the better.

1

@kiara hope yous loyalty pays off.

We'll have to wait and see. Probably not in summer though...

1

@minniegupta1 Taec had a stable career AND great reputation for ages, so at this point he has nothing to worry about as long as he doesn't break the law. And this isn't even gonna air on conservative TV, so why not? BL web dramas are all rage now despite everything - few of my other faves starred in those too and I don't recall any big negative fuss about it... If anything, Japanese co-ML might be a bigger issue than drama's genre. Ahem.

My VIXX boys Han Sanghyuk (Hyuk for kpop crowd) was in COLOR RUSH2 and Jung Taekwoon (Leo) was in... *checks notes* HAPPY ENDING ROMANCE. For latter it was also his drama debut - he only did musicals for decade+ at this point, as his stan I've long given up to ever see him in a show/movie and then out of nowhere... Lol. But this isn't something uncommon - rookie actors and idols often start with web dramas, including BL ones. It's simply easier to get casted on a prominent role there.

Cannot name anyone else - I'm not really familiar with the genre - but surely there were a few before that. Not Taecyeon though - but he's been acting in "real" dramas for a long time, and as a lead at that, so he's certainly not doing this project due to lack of other offers.

Unfortunately, yes, there is, as Japan still adamantly refuses to admit they once wronged Korea (and China too) big time, let alone properly apologize and make amends. Every once in a while someone with more political weight than brains says something insensitive and it sparks another round of heated mutual insults both offline and online. These last years things has gotten a lot worse, imo. So news of multiple cross-countries drama projects as of late surprise me greatly, I so did not expect that in the current situation.

1

I've only seen a handful of BLs but the ones I know offhand are:
Jaechan, who is in both My Sweet Mobster and Bitter Sweet Hell right now, was one of the leads in Semantic Error (probably the best BL out there). The other ML in that show, Park Seo-ham, has been cast in Rowoon's upcoming drama. Kim Kang-min, who's been in a bunch of well-known dramas including Family: the Unbreakable Bond and Hospital Playlist, was one of the MLs in To My Star.

Thank you!

I’m glad you mentioned SoulMate. I was going to ask about it. I didn’t know if this is the first BL for Taecyeon? I find it interesting but not surprising that it’s Japanese. I appreciate him taking this opportunity. And being willing to forgo the SK criticism he may receive to have the experience. I have not ever seen him in a show or on stage but he definitely has my curiosity now and I will be cheering for him 🌈

I think it's his first BL indeed - granted, I haven't seen all his dramas, but surely the news of celebrity of his caliber doing one before would've been too big to miss.

He's not a stellar actor, imo, but his comedy skills are quite good. Liked him in BRING IT ON, GHOST and more recent HEARTBEAT was loved greatly here on DB by nearly everyone (until finale, but that's not on him). One point of worry is that I cannot remember him ever being convincing in romance, but maybe he'll do better with a male partner... Some actors do^^

I think it's a series, not movie - with 8 or 10 episodes, can't remember the exact number. Wasn't there also a k-movie of the same name not so long ago? With 2 girls and a guy in a teen love triangle... But that one was already released. U sure you're not confusing the two?

I can name some, but you're right - most of them did such role prior their stardom, usually in movies: Kim Jae Wook in ANTIQUE BAKERY, fetus Yeon Woo Jin (or was it Ji Hyun Woo?) in a film I forgot the name of, LJG (along with his 2 veteran male costars) in THE KING AND THE CLOWN... and then there is full of stars FROZEN FLOWER ofc in all its bi erotica gone tragically wrong glory.

I meant the drama that you mentioned. I wrote the wrong word (I also forgot the movie Soulmate which features the male lead of Lovely Runner existed haha)

Lee Je Hoon also played a gay character in a movie but I forget who his co star was and again, I think it was early days of his career. He might've still been considered an unknown at the time.

1

@britney and I totally forgot it was BWS in that movie lol! I think I heard there's plan to re-release the film given his current popularity... So insane, just like in good old Hallyu days)))

The hardcore tonal difference between sanitized kdramas and utter zero-brakes wildness of k-movies never stops to amaze me. Like I didn't get to watch most of those iconic old films to be more specific, but even I know that sooo many of current established and respectable stars have some daring stuff buried deep down in their filmography^^ Wonder if we're about to lose that edge and contrast for good with how movie industry in SK struggles rn...

0

@gikata gay portrayals was actually a topic I wanted to talk about on the Open Thread but I didn't know how to broach it cause it can be a hot button topic. But after weeks of seeing the back & forth arguments when High School Return of a Gangster was airing, I had it on my mind.

One thing I wonder is why do the gay dramas almost always, if not always, have idols as the leads?

Why is "artistic" for queer content to happen in movies but not in dramas?
Then again, I suppose generally dramas aren't considered artistic

1

@britney BL dramas usually cast idols/rookie actors not for some mysterious "artistic" reasons, far from that - it's simply a matter of status. Respectable actors rely on general public's goodwill - yunno, conservative, narrow-minded, easily triggered general public... Esp those who mainly work on TV. For them doing such role is a risky move. But idol actors - vast majority of them who are yet to establish themselves in the eyes of the said general public - have little to no respectability like that. No one treats them any seriously from the get go, they have no high class reputation to preserve. Same with green rookies - they simply have nothing to lose here. So might at well dare and try to gain a fanbase by doing a popular genre.

To put it simply, SK has long figured out exactly what they want to see on their TV during family dinners every day - and BL dramas with freshest crop of questionably skilled kpop kids in lead roles is NOT in that list. Such stuff makes rounds on streaming platforms though, but that's a whole another demographic.

Happy Saturday, Gingu!! I hope you are feeling better.👩‍⚕️
DOUBLE - Good example of, if you are going to be mindless, then pace it better so it doesn't get boring. Good acting from the murderer ex and psyco princess. I have liked WJY since her first breakout, so I'm glad she's back to her roots with another successful drama.
FOLLOW YOUR HEART and everything else C-drama have been stretching my suspension of disbelief past the limit, yet here I am at episode 20. The actors are not terrible, and I feel the need to support Song Yi after JOY OF LIFE. Cheng Lei's character does not do him any favors. I get that he is a grumpy general with his nose cut off, but the shouting is not working. I can't wait for the plastic surgery performed by the FL so that the shouting would stop. LOL
I tried the PRINCESS drama but couldn't watch the male lead, so I dropped it.
TALE OF ROSE—A slice of life I could not relate to, so I skipped a lot. I'm still allergic to Lin Geng Xin, so I hit the FF button too often. I should have dropped this show earlier.

Thanks, I'm almost fine))) Unlike certain someone, who probably needs to get checked for a possible infection asap because no simple cold lasts 2+ weeks without getting even slightly better...

Shovel hubby x Princess Crazy were the sole reason I stick with the drama for so long - as much as leads were "not bad at all" acting and chemistry-wise, characterization for them was abysmal both individually and together, so at some point I simply stopped caring. Also I've seen screencaps of a certain non-death battle scene in finale circulating online which gave me strong plagiarism alert painful flashbacks, if you know what I mean...

Re: FYH - brace yourself: the very first thing general angry bird (nickname not mine) does after recovering his nose in Ep21 is to yell at people as a thanks)))

Actors of TPR do not bother nor excite me much, but novel left such a sour taste in the mouth bc of FL character and drama did not sugarcoat things enough for me to continue.

@gikata,
Shoot me. He is probably a good actor to a lot of viewers.

1

@kiara why tho? That's Shen Li's problem that you aren't impressed by her man, not mine lol)))

I wouldn't go as far as judging his overall acting level by just one show, but I do think he was perfectly casted in TLOSL at least. Imagine getting some overhyped young liuliang in that role instead! *shudders* Whatever man's skills limitations may be, I haven't noticed them much. Well, except maybe kissing technique so flatlined that Ning-ge can be called an onscreen makeout guru in comparison...

1

@gikata,
I've watched him since he was a newbie in "Scarlet Heart" (2011). I'm not basing it on one drama.
I'm not into Xianxia, but I have had a soft spot for Zhao Li Ying since MING LAN. This year, I've been trying to watch more Xianxia dramas, even if I don't pay attention to details like I would with the likes of "Heroes" or "Joy of Life," which are my type of historical dramas.

1

@kiara I meant I only saw him in one drama so far - as long the performance wasn't eye-bleeding horrendous, I always give actors a second chance at least.

This year wasn't all that in terms of xianxia so far - there was SHEN LI, FOX SPIRIT and... that's it? Ah, all the SWORD & FAIRY remakes ofc. Nothing to really write home about. Even SHEN LI, however fun it was, didn't go far beyond simply being a satisfying love story - worldbuilding? Ha! Solid supporting characters except ex-fiancee and Snake Demoness? Ha-ha-ha!

1

@gikata,
I'm currently binge-watching some of Luo Yun Xi's costume dramas. His fight scenes remind me of Lee Joong Ki's, and I appreciate that they mostly do their own stunts.

1

@kiara ooooh, now that's what I call having a true quality time))) Yes, they are one of the best when it comes to stunts and wirework. Unfortunately, I found all his costume shows pre-TTEOTM real torture not exactly watchable due to plot/other actors, but those action scenes, mmm! Still nothing beats that ~1 hour long battle in TTEOTM - my jaw is still on the floor 15 months later... Esp the fact that he's done it all while still recovering from injury and with real 16kg bronze spear (per his own request "for authenticity"). Perhaps I need to set everything else aside and just go rewatch it for -nth time... The money I'd give for 100+ episodes prequel-spinoff about God of War and his two besties just beating up demons daily for millennia...

Can't wait for SHUI LONG YIN which is supposed to be 70-80% of insane action. Plot? What plot? Who cares whether it's even there?)))

I loved the comedy of DREAMING OF A FREAKING FAIRY TALE including the running commentary by our Narrator- which we had too little of in the ninth episode. Of course a show that used all the tropes could never be any sort of self-respecting Kdrama romcom without having an appropriately idiotic Noble Separation. In the end though we did get our perfect Happy Ending- complete with happily ever after. In a way it is a shame that we only got ten episodes but dramatically that was perfect- we were spared a lot of unnecessary filler and the story was truly complete by the end.

My wife continued her slow watch of the Chinese Costume drama THE DOUBLE- anyone else who is watching it knows why she has no choice in that. It is a super good show, so slow watching is inevitable. In fact, in stark contrast to her binge watches that kept her up into the wee hours of the morning now she has been waking up early to catch the newest episode (and confusing our cat). Those who depend Netflix should be pleased that it is coming there within the week (a sure sign that this is a eally successful show). When I asked her if she thought that it might be as good as NIRVANA IN FIRE her response was a solid “Maybe” but she noted that we will not really know until it is over.

She also watched DIVINE DESTINY which was entertaining. Then she finally went ahead and watched INEXTRICABLE DESTINY which has been on her watchlist for a while- and has a really odd, if not misleading, name: Maybe it was supposed to by INEXPLICABLE DESTINY? It is pretty crazy according to my wife but fun. Then on to LOVE BEHIND THE MELODY- which my wife says is simply fun- and has great music too.

Our weekender BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC seems to have moved into a new chapter with our FL now unfortunately “Reunited” with her mother and older brother after our ML’s truly nasty Grandmother essentially kicked her out during the ML’s brief absence and now we are also treated to a painful separation between our leads as well- and the promise of more angst to come. The story is certainly moving along- and the wider reveal of the ML’s birth secret may be about to occur- but not (despite two solid head fakes) from his half-sister who may have captured the hearts of the Korean audience: We have seen at least two vignettes which suggest that a decision was made to switch the secondary love story away from Do-ra’s older brother and Pilseung’s aunt to our endearing Ma-ri and the FL’s younger (and nicer and way better looking and much more mature and responsible) younger brother. Ma-ri has not actually realized her interest yet and younger brother will undoubtedly have to see her in action before he realizes that she may be ‘other abled’ but she is also all woman.

The Woman Who Plays With Her Deer: this show is like ice cream. It gives me energy and puts a smile on my face.

Midnight Stress In Hagwon: I am very nervous about the ending.
And I don't want this to end, but I also want to be free from all the stress.

Dare to Love Me: ?

Sadly, I haven't watched Cinderella's finale yet.

BONUS
The Bear (S3): if this was the only TV show on earth I wouldn't complain. I hope it never ends (let me be delulu). This is my therapy. This is what I call healing.

Interview with the Vampire: "My coven is Claudia." Damn, that hurt. But I'm also happy she got to hear that.
I think I like the dialogue in this show more than Hagwon's. I love what they say and much as I love what they don't say.

The Boys: Stan knows how to be a villain with STYLE.

Gentleman Prefer Blondes: pretty sure this was our Cinderella's favorite film.

Girls on Fire: I'm happy with the final group.

Hi beanies! And welcome, July!

What I'm watching:

_ Sweet Mobster (6/16). Fortunately I didn't drop it because this show is getting better week after week. Episode 6 was the best one, and very funny. The ML is so endearing.

_ C-drama Joy of Life 2 (27/36). I'm finishing it and I'm sure I'm going to miss these fabulous characters.

Western shows:

_ Finished My baby reindeer. Well acted, hard sometimes, but never boring. Great selection of songs.

_ Finished Italian mini-drama Generation 56kb. Nice rom-com, beautiful Napoli/Naples locations, enemies to lovers, childhood connection...Quite predictable, but I liked it.

Next watch: probably Racket Boys 🏸

The title almost made me skip MY SWEET MOBSTER and I came late to the drama, but, wow, I do love it so much and could binge watch the first few episodes. Best of all is the deadpan mobster who can chase away gangsters alone through his presence, but who is suffering from low self-confidence regarding FL. Thank you writer for giving us a wide-shoulder penguin-hug and the worst restaurant date with SML. I almost felt sorry for him.

Another light hearted favourite was FREAKING FAIRYTALE and the realisation of FL that she is not really a Cinderella (or really a gold digger in this case), but a warrior is a good turn for the ending. A nice mix of comedy and drama.

I find it harder and harder to press the play button on the HAGWON drama, something is missing, maybe the dialogues are just a touch too long with little other scenes in-between. It is still a good drama. The former school teacher is my favourite character now.

CONNECTION is so well written and directed. Love how ML never answers any questions from others. I knew the stolen gun would be a problem.

The cast of MISS NIGHT AND DAY and especially Lee Jung-Eun are what makes it watchable despite the set-up and the serial killer. The attitudes shown by the characters in the drama towards middle aged ladies are somewhat sobering!

Agree with so much of what you said here, especially regarding "Mobster" (so unexpectedly charming and fun!) and "Hagwon" (undoubtedly a great drama with fantastic dialogue, but one has to be all in to sit through those long, ponderous scenes).

With "Miss Night and Day," I was truly taken aback by the ML's intense ageism. It's not like I don't know that society in general is ageist and favors the young, especially when it comes to women. But I was shocked that a character presented to us as coolly rational, highly educated, and ultra practical would be so blinded by prejudice that he wouldn't realize almost immediately that his new secretary is crazy good at her job. The show definitely dragged out his ignorant stubbornness for longer than necessary to milk laughs (which weren't really there after the first scene or two), and this ended up turning me off the ML for a while. The show overall is pretty mediocre, but Lee Jung-Eun is delightful, especially in those scenes with the Idol, so I guess I'll hang in one more week.

That gun was *always* going to be a problem. He's going to have his hands full when his druggie situation gets out into the open and said gun is MIA. It will be interesting to see how it all comes together.

My Sweet Mobster (through Ep. 4): Ji-hwan (if that's his real name) is truly the sweetest mobster imaginable. I'd love this show wholeheartedly if not for the prosecutor, who is my least favorite kind of SML: prejudiced, know-it-all, disrespectful of FL's intelligence and agency, and smugly self-righteous. On the flip side, I can't remember the last drama ML who was as careful with his actions as Ji-hwan. Of course it's with good reason -- he knows how harshly society judges him and his crew. How meaningful it was when Eun-ha told him he was a good man. I wonder -- if he is indeed the missing childhood friend -- if he's not revealing his identity because he wants her respect, friendship and love (someday?) to be based not on rose-colored memories but on the man he has become, flaws and all.

Freaking Fairy Tale (through Ep. 5): Late to the party but thoroughly happy to catch up on the laughs and squees I'd been missing. Even though I knew what to expect from the recaps (yup, no self-control here), the princess-carry bathroom emergency was still hilarious. And then the show hits you with moments of real connection that have you rooting even harder for Chae-min and Jae-rim's happy ending.

Dare to Love Me (through Ep. 14): I'm sensing a theme running through these three rom-coms of main couples upending "the social order." Hong-do and Yun-bok are as considerate and supportive of each other as ever, although it's unclear in which world they'll end up. I wish there had been a deeper examination of the Seongsam Village structure -- have the residents really never questioned the class hierarchy that separates them into nobles and workers from birth? Also, Jun-ho better not be dead.

Beauty and Mr. Romantic (through Ep. 28): I need more Ma-ri and Do-jun! The last two episodes were tough to get through, just because Do-ra is getting screeched at by the harpies -- again -- and is the target of her mother's exploitation -- also again. I'll consider this stretch the darkest hour before dawn, part 2, but it would be nice to see some light on the horizon.

The Player 2 (through Ep. 7): Relatively stress-free summertime fare. My current family watch show.

And then C-drama The Double threatened to elbow all the other shows out of the way (until I ran out of new episodes) by being addictively watchable. I can't imagine anyone other than Wu Jin Yang, who was absolutely electric in Yanxi Palace, in the title role. She draws your attention and you can't look away (and neither can the men in the show).

The bathroom emergency scene was hilarious! Though during the princess-carry, I couldn't help by think all the bouncing could make the bladder situation worse...but then there was no other choice.

This is why I'm always super careful about liquid consumption without a bathroom nearby.

I had similar concerns, but at least gravity wouldn't be working against her in the princess-carry position.

On a more serious note, the lack of safe, clean public bathrooms is a serious health and hygiene issue in so many places. It shouldn't be so stressful and difficult for people to take care of basic bodily functions.

On BMR we all need much more of Do-jun and Mari and I have a serious hypothesis that we are going to get it. I base this on several things:

First, for several episodes Mari has actually been a significant element in moving the story- when something happens, she does not stand by- she reacts immediately and before anyone else. She has already shown that she has a mind of her own - makes decisions (not always the best ones) and takes action on them. Very few other side characters, if any, are her match in this regard.

Second, Do-jun has turned out to be a truly likeable character and now we have reason, just as Ma-ri does, to think very highly of him beyond just the fact that he is a brave and good young man (with a great body- already noticed by Ma-ri). Because we now know that he was an Architecture student and plans to complete those studies.

Ma-ri and Do-jun are probably the most popular and endearing characters in the show after our two leads and I strongly suspect that a major change in their story was put in place as part of the midcourse corrections for the show. Originally Do-ra's older brother Do-shik and Pilseung's aunt were going to be the main side romance, but my guess is that no one in the audience ever expressed any desire to see her end up saddled with that idiot (I know I sure don't). But a vignette near the beginning of episode 27 clearly seemed intended to change our perceptions of both Mari and Do-jun. I actually had to go back and re-watch it because when I first saw it, I felt that it was just a foreshadowing of Mari soon spilling Pilseung's birth secret.

But then the end of episode 28 happened and it turned out that I was wrong. That earlier scene in episode 27 was just a head fake as far as the reveal of Pilseung's birth secret. I then went back and re-watched that earlier scene and realized that it had really served the dramatic purpose of making us see both Do-jun and Mari differently:

As an Architecture student not only is Ma-ri more impressed with Do-jun but he now looks like the kind of guy that her parents could approve of as a son in law.

What the director did with Mari was even more startling in retrospect. She was not dressed like a little girl in that scene but like a woman in clothing which flattered her figure- and with her hair up, showing us a very lovely neck. But even more than that during most of that vignette the director obviously had her posing to show these things off- mostly in profile. But they went even further than that during the moments when Do-jun's face is framed in the center of the screen because what we saw on the right-hand side of the screen was a profile of Ma-ri's chest- and this happened several times. The message to the audience is to change the way we see Mari from a 'disabled' Eternal Child to 'Childlike Woman' with an emphasis on the 'woman' part.

Of course, neither of them yet has any conscious romantic interest in each other...

I'm not watching any currently airing dramas. I found a source to watch some older dramas that I have had a hard time finding so I've been watching those...

MOON LOVERS: SCARLET HEART RYEO: So I nearly fell off my chair at that opening scene in the bath with all those half naked princes, their luxurious long hair flowing and adorned with jewelry. I didn't know anything abut this drama except that many people seemed to like it and that it was hard to find. I had no idea it would be so campy and kinda silly. Well, I'm only 3 episodes in, and I know it will be more tragic as we move forward.

Spent the week in drama mourning, having finished NIRVANA IN FIRE. Every lead performer in this show was superb, every one. What an impressive feat of storytelling, great vision and direction, profoundly beautiful character arcs. Timeless and deserves the praise.

Was rescued from drama mourning by news that Hu Ge's performance was recognized in another intriguing drama, BLOSSOMS SHANGHAI (2023). Any Dramabeans contributors who have seen this series? It joins my list of dramas I'd like to watch but unavailable on any platforms accessible to me (SCARLET HEART RYEO, MY SECRET TERRIUS, SECRET AFFAIR, SIX FLYING DRAGONS ... NIRVANA IN FIRE 2). I could go on and on...

Meanwhile, our canny, bighearted hero continues to rescue MINGLAN from one vicious villain after another, all the while his respect grows for his very clever wife. There sure are a lot of shrews in drama land.

Other watches worth note:
A DREAM OF SPLENDOR. Slow to gel, but the leads Liu Yifei and Chen Xiao are wonderful together and the music is fabulous.

MY SWEET MOBSTER continues to tickle me, especially our wonderful cast of reformed gangsters. This is a delightful k-drama.

OH MY VENUS rewatch was my happy watch of the week. This is like watching four Hepburn-Tracy movies back to back with THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (1940) thrown in for good measure. Shin Min-a and So Ji-sub, where are you?

I believe BLOSSOMS SHANGHAI isn't available translated anywhere at all - in fact, production's hardcore gatekeeping of the show from international audience led to a lot of raised eyebrows. There were talks about selling exclusive broadcasting rights to a global platform earlier, which would explain the fact at least, but I think it fell through somehow - or was never true in the first place. Honestly, I think drama already earned enough of money and acclaim/buzz for everyone involved even with local broadcast only, so no one - except ignored intl viewers lol - craves for more at this point.

Other shows you listed can be found subbed on darknet at least...

Ahh, PHILADEPHIA STORY is yar even at more than 80 years of age.
Been looking through my notes to recommend C-historicals on par with NIF. Sadly I missed NIF2 when it was available but those two shows are on avenueX's list (youtube cdrama vlogger). She also loves Joy of Life 1; The Long Night; The Bad Kids. I agree with JoL but haven't hit play on the other two.
Fellow Beanie Old Lawyer & Mrs like Legend of Fu Yao, Weaving a Tale of Love 1 & 2; Imperial Coroner; Wrong Carriage, Right Groom original version. These are all unfamiliar to me and may be less historical.
My personal fav Cdramas include a very hidden gem An Ancient Love Song which is written Momento style and is super low-budget but wonderful. Also enjoyed the absolutely NOT historical Legend of Shen Li; Sword Snow Stride; Lost You Forever; Fake It Till You Make It.
If you can subtract out the political bather You Are My Glory is a fun romp. Happy watching!

I would day say that Dali and Cocky Prince felt like a screwball comedy rom-com, and the ML of Her Private Life brought the Cary Grant charm (a'la That Touch of Mink). I loved watching older movies, too - mom would let us get the DVDs from the library, so we had a good foundation in the classic rom-coms 😊 I'll think if I know of any other parallels! @oldawyer would also have some good ideas for this - I think he was the Beanie I heard calling Dali and Cocky Prince a screwball comedy!

Ok here we go, adding to the already mentioned above Tracy/Hepburn films and PHILADELPHIA STORY, a short listing but I'm sure others can add on...

IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934) Claudette Colbert & Clark Gable setting the standard for everything that followed.
MY MAN GODFREY (1936) Carole Lombard & Wm. Powell with a great supporting cast. Great Depression comedy.
BRINGING UP BABY (1938) Incomparable. Katherine Hepburn & Cary Grant & Baby the Leopard
BACHELOR MOTHER (1939) Ginger Rogers & David Niven. A Christmas story with a Department Store "chaebol", still today a great setup for a K-drama remake.
BALL OF FIRE (1941) Barbara Stanwyck & Gary Cooper & Dana Andrews & all the lovely profs. Echoes of this setup in MY SWEET MOBSTER.
TALK OF THE TOWN (1942) Jean Arthur & Cary Grant & Ronald Colman. This is a brilliant script, ever timely.
MORE THE MERRIER (1943) You just cannot go wrong with Jean Arthur & Joel McCrea. Wartime housing shortage comedy.
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE (1944) Cary Grant & Peter Lorre & Raymond Massey & two great character actresses. This was successful adaptation of a smash Broadway play.
FARMER'S DAUGHTER (1947) Ginger Rogers & Joseph Cotton & the great scene stealers Ethel Barrymore & Charles Bickford. If you want to see the opposite of over-acting, watch Barrymore & Bickford in this film. I watch this whenever I get truly blue. It's fabulous.
PLEASE DON'T EAT THE DAISIES (1960) Doris Day & David Niven & the upside down playpen
PARENT TRAP (1961) Hayley Mills, Brian Keith & the "illegally beautiful" Maureen O'Hara. (Patrick Wayne quote. John's son.) This is the original and the best.

Dream of a Freaking Fairy Tale What a fun and adorable ride it has been with some breathtaking kisses! They squeezed in the unlikable kdrama interfering 2nd leads+parent tropes in episode 9 - almost as if they felt obliged to. But as the episodes are short, that nonsense didn't drag on like in other dramas. Then they got us a nice ending that doesn't feel rushed for our characters.

Crash (episodes 1-2) Wanting something procedural with interesting cases. I'm liking it so far, but not sure if I will like it enough to finish it.

Revenant (episodes 1-2) Been on my list for awhile. Though after watching these episodes, I'm a little afraid of my shadow when my long hair in loose and it gets windy.

The Double (cdrama, up to middle of ep 19 ). I get teary-eyed thinking about how our heroine is not only getting revenge for herself, but for the real Jiang Li. Not just the revenge part, but making her name be known as an elegant and talented young lady and protecting the family that actually wanted her. The real Jiang Li is never forgotten.

Follow Your Heart (up to ep 20) Cdrama costume drama. My new obsession. I love it when the leads, especially romantic leads, feel like they can be good friends and can smile and laugh with each other. The FL is bold and friendly, but ML is not her cold and domineering opposite. He's actually quite nice and approachable. It's got a great cast of supporting characters too. It's not breaking barriers, but it's got a down-to-earth charm. Just lots of scenes that make me laugh and smile. Also the few fight scenes there have been are really well-choreographed.

A very emotional and heartbreaking first 2 episodes with the promise of hope and love between the two lead characters.

Under the Queen's Umbrella
As a mother I feel a kinship to this queen who literally will do anything for her sons, the Grand Princes. In Episode 3 I felt a particular closeness to this mother who while stunned by her sons actions, did not give up on him. She found a way to make him feel heard and important. Her actions were not only out of the ordinary but instilled confidence and love into her son which he desperately needed.

Young Actors Retreat
"This came highly recommended by my fellow beanies. Only 2 episodes in and I am enjoying seeing these famous and not so known actors in a casual setting. This is the first ""reality, variety"" show that I have watched. Lots of laughter and friendship which is needed to offset the emotional dramas I am watching."

Finished:
Military Prosecutor Doberman 9.5/10
The Good: Everything!! Such an interesting gritty story about the Korean Military. Mystery, revenge, corrersion, literal Monster of a Mother and corruption everywhere. While this is never a show I would have thought I would be interested in, Ahn Bo-hyun is a reason to watch any show. He was perfect in this role. Never knew if you could trust what he was doing, but in the end his good heart would always win out. Looking fantastic in a military uniform was another great thing about this watch. His partnership with Jo Bo-ah as detectives, avengers and prosecutors was flawless. While they had chemistry and no would would be sad about the ending, the trust and friendship that they developed was really the highpoint of this show. And add a great cast- even if many of them were despicable- made this a highly emotional show.
The Bad: It is rated M on Netflix and that is for the many fight scenes. But considering you had the expert ABH throwing the punches it was something I could tolerate. There also was some graphic violence and an unshown rape scene. None of it did not hold a place in the story line.
Would definitely rewatch, maybe using the FF button this time through some of the rough scenes now that I know the story.

Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale ep 7-8 Seriously love this two episodes. Each had a hand in helping resolve each other past traumas so he/she can move on and love themselves a little more. I love this development to their story since fixing their past traumas will make them better individuals to accept and nurture the love each wants to give.

The Double ep22- 28 i will keep it vague to avoid spoilers. the baddies are getting more brazen and desperate. Our good guys come prepared as best they can but still take hits. The latest hit made me so sad. I sure hope the princess and her minions will get the coneuppance they deserve. Jiang Li and Xiao Heng's short scenes are my fave as always.

Connection ep9-10 All the pieces are slowly coming together. I am really happy that Yoon Jin called out Ji Yeon using the word "shameless". That sure stopped her victim act. How dare she call out Yoon Jin when there is a valid reason why her husband would not leave her with anything.

b>Life on Mars ep10 skipped a week. Will try to catch up next week.

My Sweet Mobster ep5-6 I like the Co-habitation and tutoring the boys since they did not finish school. I enjoy their interactions together that it feels like Hyun Woo is an interloper on her time. I rather see her spend more time with the Thirsty Deer crew. Looking forward to the result of Man-Ho's misguided "romantic" entrapment.

Follow Your Heart ep1-6 I started this with no expectations other than I liked Luo Yunxi in TTEOTM. His appearance is more of a normal nobleman and not the grandiose evil one so it took a bit of time to adjust. I havent seen Beauty Inside but it does have a similar storyline. I like it so far and we shall see if I can stick with this.

I believe production had no other choice but to hastily write out a character because of real life circumstances, which are pretty hilarious if you want details))) In the novel that character lives, as far as I know.

... few other non-canon deaths in the finale were 100% for moar angst though.

I'm going from emergency surgery to doctor betrayal in D-Day. The villain is beyond redemption. One suspect choose honesty, while the politician reveals more and more his greediness.
I'm well behind for Connection to participate in the discussion. This drama is dense.

Lovelly runner is totally opposite these two. Very cute, but the FL is starting to go on my nerves. She is so childish. That's why I don't usually watch school dramas. Well, I'll just focus on Byeon Woo Seok smile and heart eyes.

My friend had nothing to watch since finishing Frankly speaking and Knight flower, and Would you like a cup of coffee is a bit too slow and Dare to love me was not the right mood, so she started The 8 Show, City hunter and Oh my baby with the latter having her preference.

Finished: Frankly Speaking and Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale. Once I remembered I hadn't finished the former, I made an effort to get through the last two episodes. Kind of like cleaning or doing laundry, unmentionable but necessary for the reward, in this case 🫘. I would have preferred the satire I initially thought this would be, but it gave us some charming characters and gentle laughs, a sweet love story or three, and a wonderful performance by Joo Jong-hyuk, who is definitely ready for primetime. So glad his character wasn't the villain some early viewers had predicted.

Fairytale was more cohesive, and painless to get through, yet it didn't quite click with me either. I didn't emotionally connect with either of the leads for some reason. Highlight for me was the screaming fury fiance and her mobster dad.

Ongoing: Still dreading the last few episodes of Midnight Romance in Hagwon, so no progress there.

I've caught up with Connection. This is so tightly plotted it might have been better to binge the whole thing, but I can't deprive myself of my weekly dose of Ji Sung's cheekbones. The grey morality of so many of the characters is refreshing and intriguing. Will be interesting to see which side they come down on.

Miss Night and Day has become my weekend delight. I loved how our ahjuma blithely and obliviously crushed her work assignments, and how her younger version is getting back her confidence and joy. She was delightfully sexy in her undercover spy clothing. Our hero is bemused by both versions of our heroine. So looking forward to the hijinks as he tries to reconcile the two in his brain. I'm also shipping Ko Won and...Cheon-hui? Whatever the name of the stern prosecutor lady is.

My Mobster is the show that currently holds most of my heart though. Eun-ha's sweetness with a spine of steel (that girl knows how to look after herself) is the perfect match for our crispy tender hero. His mumbled pettiness followed by his mumbled bragging about his shoulders was hilarious, as were Jae-su's attempts to hide Ji-hwan's impressive pecs from Eun-ha's view. Too late bro, she's already had a glimpse of his manly torso! This show is chock-full of delightful characters and moments, I highly recommend it to anyone who's not already on the wagon.

C-drama: I reserve episodes of Wonderland of Love for just before bedtime, when I can fall asleep to discussions of how the Ministry of Rites found the precedent to allow our heroine to make a court appearance. Riveting stuff. I get through about half an episode a night. That said, the interiors, costumes and cinematography remain gorgeous, and the instrumental score is wonderful.

Still hooked on 'Connection'. Wonderful plotting and pacing. The episodes just fly by...

Tried 'The Whirlwind' but the characters just didn't draw me in.

'The Double'. At episode 30 I thought the writing wobbled and that the drama was going to hit the final stretch doldrums, but luckily it picked up again. Having a lot of fun watching this one...

Re-watched contemporary romance 'She & Her Perfect Husband'. Tropes: younger man / older woman, fake-marriage-becomes-real. For some reason this is a romance that I really enjoy. The dialogue is sharp, and the central relationship never feels forced. And then there's the bonus of the FL's extraordinary outfits (some of which are hilariously inappropriate for a lawyer). But this time I fast forwarded through the cutesy secondary romance scenes, and through most of episodes 31 to 40, because the writing quality nosedives at the end.

I've loved the FL in Midnight Hagwon ever since Wok of Love, so it's been such a joy to see her again in a drama. I like that the love story is pure and uncomplicated, for example, they could have easily made her a married woman having an affair with a former student. But I still spent most of the drama half squealing and half dry heaving/shuddering at the scenes between teacher and former student. I think this genre has traumatized me ever since Majo no Joken. But their age difference in Midnight Hagwon is quite palatable in that he was a high school senior and she was college age (I think). However something is still off about them being cast together. They both have charisma but there's not much chemistry as a couple, if that makes sense. Also, I wish I felt more affection for the ML but it feels like he's not really owning his character. There's not enough depth to his acting and/or character to satisfy me. I'm just not seeing the chemistry between them besides him being a swoony fresh faced young hunk with a husky voice. He's kind of like a stereotype/caricature of "the younger man". Maybe bland is the word I'm looking for. The ML's acting and the character is bland. So when Miss Day and Night started, I was easily wooed and left Midnight Hagwon, satisfied and no longer that interested in what happens next and how their story ends. I am now fully onboard with Day and Night from the very first episode. Wow, that was one of the most fun first episodes I've seen in a while. It's fast paced but I was able to follow along without any trouble. I'm so thankful that I finally found a drama that I can't find anything to criticize. It's just so enjoyable. I'm one of those simple creatures who don't mind how often the psychopath trope gets deployed as long as they do it well. Day and Night is a comforting yet refreshing mix of my favorite genres: investigation and fantasy. I am also very relieved that Choi Jin Hyuk's acting is still watchable. Backstory: I was an ardent fan of his just a few years ago until his salon room scandal and disasterous appearances on Ugly Duckling (reality show) I was afraid that show and that scandal ruined any shred of admiration I had for him. But thankfully, his acting has remained mostly intact. He's still an effective actor, although looks-wise no longer so youthful. But it's just hard to fall for him the way I did before, knowing from the reality show that he spends most of his free time playing video games at home. Which is very hypocritical of me, I admit, considering that I probably spend as much of my free time watching dramas... so what I'm saying is that never look up your favorite actor online if you want to maintain that same love and passion you have for him/her. You'll find a very normal person with faults haha. I feel like Choi Jin Hyuk is not completely back yet, he hasn't had many projects the last few years and you can see some awkwardness in his stance. But I'm still glad they...

...gave him a chance because he does work very well on screen with his deep voice and slow thoughtful gazes. I'll never be able to worship him the way I did before, but at least I won't have to avoid his dramas. Actually, the same reality show he was on also had the supporting actor who plays the FL's dad. And while Ugly Duckling caused me to fall out of love with Choi Jin Hyuk, I ended up developing a totally unexpected crush on the guy who plays FL's dad. He was so witty and down to earth on Ugly Duckling. He might not have movie star good looks but his personality is very attractive. Like, if I had to choose any of the bachelors on Ugly Duckling to marry, he'd be the one. So imagine how delighted I was to see him cast in Day and Night! And such a fun role. I'm so thankful for this drama, the mix of young and old actors is just wonderful. I'm also really happy for both FL's they chose. I really liked the younger FL in Blind, and thought she had a way of owning her role in a way that most actresses of her age group hasn't. I haven't really found an actress her age that I've been impressed with besides her. And the older FL is so perfect for this role and she's doing such a great job acting in a natural way without going overboard for comedic effects. And yes as everyone says, the ageism bit was out of character and didn't belong in the drama. It was supposed to be funny but it just came off really badly on the ML. That's a bad call that the screenwriter made unfortunately because it took you out of the drama. I also did enjoy the first episode of Freaking Fairytale very very much but it didn't last very long. By the time the leads were sitting by the Han River bantering, I was like, "hey this is unrealistic that a CEO would be doing this" The scenario was so unrealistic that it ruined all the magic for me. I lost trust in the narrative and didn't continue past episode 2.

Live watching nothing although considering starting Jinny’s Kitchen S2 since I did enjoy the first.

Ongoing old stuff:
Lovely Runner- not super old but I am behind. On episode 6 and it’s going ok. Not super loving it but waiting to see what reason she has to go back in time again.

Cdrama Joy of Life. After traveling got hit by jet lag or something which wiped me out every evening so we’re still on 26/32. That king sure makes me feel stupid. I can never predict why he makes FX do the things he does like carry all those flowers up to that temple. I am sure he has some 3D chess reason I can’t fathom. Did FX really have an open thoractomy done while on chloroform? I am not sure that tiny incision will do.

Still debating if I want to join the CW with the infamous bad hair Junho. I remember it was good but really emotional show and I am not sure I am mentally/emotionally prepared for the emotional ringer. However I do highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it and don’t need light and fluffy right now.

“My Sweet Mobster” is the breath of fresh air that’s needed after a long and harsh winter. The next episodes can’t come soon enough!

Since “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon” is nearing the end, I started watching. I’m one of the precious few who loved “something in the rain,” even to the frustrating, bitter end. But based on that experience, I didn’t want to compound any possible agony by watching in real time. I’m only 5 episodes in so the love story is barely getting off the ground, but the story is super engaging to me. One beanie said they can “feel the exhaustion” from the screen and I aggressively co-sign. Eeshhh how is this living? Anyway, there’s something about the work of this trio of director, composer, and cinematographer that really moves me. I’ll probably watch whatever they create.

CURRENTLY WATCHING 👀 😌
Chief Detective 1958
This has been the show I put on when I'm writing or working from home so I've been taking my sweet time with it. I have one more episode to go! Lee je-hoon knows how to carry a show. I do love a squad of do-gooders and justice fighters. And I like these period dramas that do a good job merging fiction with historical facts or at least some version of real history. I'm nervous about the ending, now that Mrs. Detective (Hye-ju) has what she has been wanting! I worry something is going to happen to her. Dramas have made me suspicious of good news just before the ending. We know it doesn't always last. I know this is a spin off of a Korean classic. I'm not tempted to track it down but I do feel ready to tackle Uncle Samsik.

My Sweet Mobster 🦞
Or as @indyfan called it, "my delicious lobster" which it shall henceforth be known as 😍 This little show has my heart. It makes me happy. It's sweet and fun ✔️ The leads have palpable chemistry *and* all the side characters are doing such a stellar job in their roles ✔️ It gives me a lot to chew on vis a vis themes of redemption, found family, societal values and what it means to love and be human ✔️✔️ It ticks all my boxes 💗

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨
I love this show. Some people doubted WHJ as leading man material but I think he did an awesome job. I find him charismatic as an actor. I will watch JRW in anything, literally anything. I adore her. I'm sad it's coming to an end but I'm ear-marking it for a rewatch before the end of the year.

Connection 💊
Wow. Every week ups the antes with this one. I am convinced Sung Eui is the baddie of all the baddies! That smirk he gave when he was watching Jun Seo destroy the music room was so creepy and 😈 That said, I can't really tell where the plot is going and that's a good thing. It was hard to watch Jae Gyeong struggle for that pill 😫 I felt for him and I was 1) relieved when he mustered up the energy to resist and 2) shocked that he had the pill in the first place! 😢 So all this time he's been walking around with it and *I* didn't know?? Can I trust him? Yikes.

Gosh. If I hadn’t seen your comment in the stream I wouldn’t have seen the tag as I didn’t receive the tag notification. That happens sometimes. 🤷🏽‍♀️

What’s funny is that I can no longer recall why we started calling it Lobster. I often end up calling it Lovely Lobster because of the recent spate of other lovely and not so lovely dramas we’ve had. 😅

I never doubted WJH. I’m a huge fan. And I’m terribly sad to be a wee bit disappointed. I mean, he’s not bad (unlike LJW’s recent outing). But nothing compares to Shoulder Thug if you know what I mean.

Absolutely nothing compares to Shoulder Thug 😅 We're putting him in a league of his own.

I know what you mean about being a little disappointed! It's hard when one of your faves is "made to look" like they suddenly don't know how to act. It's why I avoided the impossible heir.

I knooow! Everything became "lovely" for a while there. Boxers. Liars. Runners. Did i miss anything? Lobsters 😅

I've been very busy this week watching a lot of kdramas 😭😝

1) MySweetMobster : I'm loving it..officially full in..Loving the OTP so much and also handling the other messages. Loving the family trope and the side bickering.

2) CW: Just Between Lovers : I love the CW, as it increases my perspectives and hidden details. Despite weekly 2 episodes on a whilm I've reached 10. I'll keep my thoughts for the CW.

3)Dreaming of Freaking Fairytale: Unlike beanies I didn't enjoy it. I knew the subject they were handling and how it will end. I expected a good execution but it was all just underwhelming throughout.

4) Sh**ting Stars : Watched 1st episode, will probably continue, as @minniegupta1 posted African stuff underwhelmed me, but I'm gonna ignore it continue watching and hoping someday kdramas writers will recover from this.

I'm still enjoying the heck out of THE DOUBLE, and now with a few episodes to go, it's safe to say this is my favourite drama of 2024 so far. There are some intriguing that is too much makjang but the show is cleverly written so none of that hangs around for more than a couple of episodes before the FL deals with it. It makes the 40 episodes flow with ease and I've never fast-forwarded. My favourite character by far is the ex-husband. He is so vaguely written I never quite now how he's going to react. Least favourite character is also the most useless character in the show, the father. No matter what, he always needs a strong female character to tell him how he feels about certain matters. The disdain for him shines through the screen and it's terrible and doesn't make sense seeing how he's supposedly a strong individual in court.

THE MATCHMAKERS (ep10): Rowoon and his comedic timing is everything.😂
