[Drama chat] Keep your bean, thank you very much

It’s December, the 2023 Year in Review is gearing up, and our first year-end themed chat is about which dramas you dropped this year. Consider this useful preparation for the Bean Count (coming soon, shhhh), and also a good time to look back and consider your year in dramas.

What made you drop these dramas? Would you consider returning to them on a rainy day, or was this a “bye Felicia” sort of situation?

Painstakingly review the dramas in our 2023 category, and then list the ones you dropped and why.

Y'all. I only dropped two dramas this year. (This is up from only dropping one the year before, so I guess that's a little bit of improvement?) They were Oh! Young-shim (dropped after ep 1) and Destined with You (dropped after ep 6). I followed both through weecaps to see if anything would tempt me to return but, despite the wonderful weecapping talents of our Beankeepers, nothing did.

Oh! Young-shim I dropped because of good old fashioned boredom. The first episode didn’t make me want to continue, and that’s a much easier time to drop for me because I haven’t invested much time (sunk cost fallacy is real).

Destined with You was a harder drop because it felt like everyone else loved it. But after six episodes of liking the female lead less and less with each passing one, I realized I needed to bail unless I wanted to hate watch. Which, as a rule, I don’t.

There aren’t that many dramas that I watched that I wish I would have dropped, so I think I did okay, but next year I hope to be a little more ruthless in defending my entertainment time from dramas I’m not (or am no longer) enjoying enough.

I had to watch it because... Donghae. I love him to bits but I hate a professional singer getting forced to sing horrendously in dramas for the sake of someone's imagined version of comedy. I doubt the hop, skip, jump watch earned me the bean. 🤣

Not that dropping or having a high drop count is bad in the slightest (self-love always!!) but it's cool that it sounds like you were able to more or less figure out which shows you'd vibe with and make good picks in general!

I like your resolution for next year as well, might take a leaf out of your book and follow suit - especially because I hate watch quite a bit yes, but I often also try to force myself to watch something purely because FOMO and I'd love to practice a bit more self-love but also not getting so frazzled over drama FOMO!

I feel this. For me, something @hopefulromantic said a few weeks ago was incredibly helpful - that if a drama is still affecting me in a negative way a while after the episode ending (whatever that time limit is for you), it's no longer worth it, and time to drop. I still definitely had some FOMO for the rest of DWY's run, but nothing in the weecaps themselves made me regret my choice. Plus, the weecaps were generally enough to let me understand all the funny fanwall content, so I could enjoy that to a certain extent without subjecting myself to a hate watch, or just constantly thinking, "I don't get what everyone loves about this!"

We should also have beans for dramas we dropped because that is totally a skill. So right we need to learn to cut and run from dramas that are boring (heinous crime), or don't gel with us or mindset or emotional state or just meh! "Not enjoying" a drama is a perfect reason to give it the hot potato treatment. ♨️ 🥔

I dropped Island and Celebrity - Island because even Kim Nam Gil couldn't get me to watch such an appallingly bad combo of B-movie horror and stale drama tropes, and Celebrity because one episode convinced me that few things make me want to run screaming out of a room more than the word "influencers".

Compared to the other years, I have dropped a lot this year. Actually, this is my first time dropping a drama. Usually, I stick it through despite anything, so this means those were terrible that I didn't look back.
Dramas dropped:
kokdu after the premiere
The Heavenly Idol with only 6 episodes left
Family after the premiere
Not Others only watchedbone ep
Longing For You after the premiere
Worst of Evil watched 5 episodes
Moon in the day watched 4 episodes

Oasis
Strong Girl Nam-soon

Both dramas wasted incredibly talented casts, who simply couldn't overcome bad writing and mediocre direction.

Destined with you
My Demon (currently airing)

I blame myself here, both male leads cant act to save their lives (but "visuals" i guess), im pretty sure if you placed either of them opposite a boiled egg as a scene partner, the egg would outshine them by a mile.

Uncanny counter 2
19th Life

I didnt hate these (they were ok) my interest simply waned and never came back, i doubt ill revisit them anytime soon.

Cough cough** if it were up to me definitely Lee Jae-wook, he's young enough for the FL. Now that I think of it, there's a shortage of good and young male actors so Yoo-jung will mostly get paired with terrible candy who can't act or ajjushis who CAN act

Oh, he was very good in what little I saw him in!
Idk much about acting or casting, but you do make a point.
Yoo jung is lovely though, loved her in moonlight! She's very bright (in the ray of sunshine sense) which kinnndof doesn't fit the role but I like her pressence anyway.

Visual acting actors are an instant drop for me. Pull your weight whilst oozing the aura. Is it so much to ask?

Required fields are marked *

These days I started a limited number of dramas (after verifying their credentials and they are my kind of things), so I didn't drop a lot.

And 'visual acting actors' are instant drop for me too. Sorry to their fans but I wouldn't go near Destined With You or My Demon for that reason. I can only watch Song Kang for non-romance like Sweet Home and Navillera. Never watch any drama with Rowoon or Chan Eun-woo (though the Dog drama may be an exception for Park Kyu-young but still pending.)

There are more than enough dramas to choose with limited time. To me, elimnation by the look is becoming a norm....

I dropped 4 dramas and 1 show this year. I actually tend to stick with series a lot longer than I should, so there are several more I SHOULD have dropped (especially The Real Has Come, ugh don't get me started).

On my dropped list this year:

Strangers Again
I barely made it through the first episode.

The Heavenly Idol
Gave it way more time than it deserved.

Jinny's Kitchen
Just not entertaining enough and the episodes were way too long.

Oh! Youngsim
What a disaster this series was despite its cute premise. Watched 2 eps and couldn't go on.

Glitch
I love the cast and decided to give it a try despite reviews that suggested I not waste my time. I love me some quirky, unusual shows, but I barely made it past the bedroom scene with a bored Jeon Yeo-Bin to know that this was NOT what I watch K-drama for.

This year I had the luxury to consume a lot of dramas, but next year will not be the same. So I'm sharpening my dropping skills right now in order to keep myself sane and focused when the inevitable tide of temptation rises in January 😀

That show was a mess🫠

1

You know, I wouldn't say this about any other of your drops, which demonstrate you have excellent taste! but if you indeed like quirky interesting shows, you should have stuck a few more episodes with Glitch. I understand with the sex scene--I myself only watch kdramas for hot, not bad sex scenes (joking!!) --but it was brief and nothing like that was repeated (although there was a vague suggestion of same sex attraction between the 2 female leads--nothing acted upon.)
Overall, I found it not a great show, but a thought-provoking and kind of interesting semi-sci-fi exploration of cult religion and mystical experiences. In fact, I think most reviews suggest it is worth one's time, IF one likes unusual shows, that is.

I'm just replying to your comment not to argue with you--we all have our own reasons for drops--but because I think Glitch was much different from your other weakly written drops.

Required fields are marked *

Hmmm... well, I'm open to reconsidering Glitch based on your comments as I do indeed like quirky and different stories as an occasional counter to the predominately non-quirky k-drama framework. Most of your points were the very things that drew me to Glitch in the first place. Perhaps I gave up too quickly. I'll put it back on my possibilities list for 2024. It's short and I could probably squeak it in somewhere. Thank you for your thoughts @hacja!

Glitch episode 1 is very much different from every other episode, it's basically the setup of how her life kind of sucks and she's stuck in a rut. Episode 2 when Nana (and crew) show up is when it starts getting the goofy higher energy vibe the show goes with

Required fields are marked *

I really liked Glitch in the end, but I thought the first episode was rough. Just totally depressing. But it got better and better as the drama went on, and it ended up being more fun that I was expecting early in the run. I can see how it was a drop for you though.

I had the same experience with Glitch; I was a little surprised at how grim the first episode was but determined to make it past that for the FLs. I loved it, and them. The sex scene was actually what sold it to me - it made me laugh like a loon and I have no intention of exploring what that says about me.

I'm shocked to see Jinny's Kitchen on here because I did not expect someone else to feel the exact same way I did!

I started the series cuz of the wooga squad (Woo-shik & V omg) but it was so bland. The premise was so interesting but everything was so repetitive and virtually nothing happened. I was so confused as to why they weren't given any challenges or something to pull off instead of just reaching the sales.

Very interesting to put my viewing into numbers... this year, to date, I've watched 50 dramas (this counts K- and C-dramas, pre-2023 dramas, and rewatches). I'm on track to finish 15 dramas from 2023. I thought this was a fabulous year for dramas - three 2023 dramas made it to my top-ten! But I did more live-watches this year than any other, which meant more drops. 2023 dramas I dropped this year:

Brain Works
Kokdu: Season of Deity
Delivery Man
Bora! Deborah
My Perfect Stranger
Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938
King the Land
My Lovely Liar
Moving
Behind Your Touch
Destined With You
Han River Police

(*Shhh, I'm coming back to finish Destined With You and My Perfect Stranger*). My drops fall into two main camps: can't stand the characters, or can't handle the violence. Most of my drops are a "hmm... nope" :(
But Kokdu was a "HAHAHAHA LOL BYEEEE" 🤣

In my 9+ years of Kdrama watching experience, the first (and hopefully last) drama I dropped at penultimate episode was The Heavenly Idol I know, I should get wiser with experience, but Kdrama writers/PDs are even more deceitful than me and in my defense, I was running low on Jan/Feb kdramas and ended up sticking with it. Well, I learnt my lesson and will never again stick to low quality crap, if I get stuck in a kdramaland drought.

I did follow along with the recaps and don't really have a major complaint against the show apart from the boatload of annoying and stupid secondary characters so I think I'll maybe continue it someday at 2x speed.

Apart from those two all the other shows I dropped or paused were shows that aired before, but I only started them in 2023 (Our Beloved Summer, Shooting Stars, Shopping King Louie, While You Were Sleeping.)

I dropped five dramas this year (which for me means watching at least one-quarter of the drama before proactively deciding never to return) .

Strong Woman Kang-nam Soon
I wrote a Fan Wall post about the moment this drama turned me off so hard that I walked away.

Castaway Diva
This show has such love in other corners, and I'm very happy for the show and its advocates. I'm in the camp that felt that both the main character and the pervasive theme of abuse are being handled in ways that keep me uncomfortably unable to watch.

Han River Police
Started for Lee Sang-yi...he didn't keep me there. I worry that this may also happen in My Demon, but at least that latter show has more characters going for it!!

Moon in the Day
@ladykrueger's gif-ssays on "Instances when Kim Young-dae gives the viewers something/anything" are enough for me. Here's a funny example of the genre.

Race
I really wanted to finish because of @reply1988's devotion, but Hulu was taking so long to release the episodes that I said, "I'll wait until it's done and then go back..." but never ever did because I heard how it ended. Grr.

Kim Young-dae is that actor I like in A but I can bet I will not like in B. After Penthouse and his cameo in Undercover I've not seen anything he did pre-2023. If I did, I dropped them. In fact, I think this one is "on hold" and someday I'll finish it. I watched the first six episodes in a few days but I got tired of so many fights.

To my utter shock, I, an infamously habitual dropper, this year finished significantly more kdramas than I dropped. Mostly by not starting at all shows I was doubtful about, but still, that's crazy! What will happen to my reputation at this point? *worries* Anyway, let's go on with my 2023 Shame List^^

JOSEON ATTORNEY: The most interesting thing about it was pretty pastel outfits.
HEARTBEAT: I didn't find it as good as everyone else from the get-go and FL was super annoying. Life proved I wasn't wrong to run for the hills.
MY DEAREST: Does it count as a drop if I've finished Part1 but did not even touch Part2? Reasons... *sigh* I liked the show initially, I really, really did. But finale of Part1 let me down hard and upon reading that Part2 only doubled down on things I wasn't happy with instead of correcting them, I knew it's time to nope out. Writer-him, how could you? I don't have much faith in humanity left in me overall, and you just killed yet another bit of it!
STRONG GIRL NAM SOON: Actually I only bothered with this drama for that one time OG leads cameo, but I did press play and then didn't continue, so it's a technical drop.

Dishonorable mentions from cdrama pool:

ASHES OF LOVE: Blergh story, curtain shop visuals, insufferable leads etc. Perhaps one day I'll finish it as a hate-watch for LYX's sake, but man, 500 years of acid waters torture in Nether River sounds less painful in comparison!
DESTINED: It wasn't bad per se, but somehow my interest just waned before I've got to the finish line.
LOVE YOU SEVEN TIMES: I had big expectations, but crappy script and directing killed it with fire. Stop blaming actors here, you cowards!
MY JOURNEY TO YOU: Spoilers of trash ending taught me to not bother finishing, but overall it was very pretty to look at, 10 it's-raining-hot-wuxia-men out of 10!
STORY OF KUNNING PALACE: Doomed attempt to stomach a genre I hate unsurprisingly failed.

Pretty sure I forgot some other, but alas... Will there be another one, this time for "I've earned the bean, pls take it back in exchange for my wasted time"?

2023 BIWBG (BEANS I WON’T BE GETTING):
1. ENA’s STRANGERS AGAIN. Dropped after eps 7.
2. tvN’s OUR BLOOMING YOUTH. After eps 14.
3. ENA’s BORA! DEBORAH. After eps 1.
4. ENA’s LONGING FOR YOU. After eps 2.

I guess ENA’s dramas just didn’t click with me this year.
Dropping No. 2 OBY was difficult because I am a Park Hyung-sik fan and loved the original Chinese historical mystery novel (“The Golden Hairpin” by Qinghan CeCe) which was supposed to be the source for the kdrama version but for a lot of reasons the kdrama version was not a true adaptation. I couldn’t make it to the end.

Our Blooming Youth is in a category of mine I call "skimmed." These are the dramas that I've seen hours of but only in 2-3 minute chunks as I skim for things like: OTP scenes (My Dearest), particular characters (Tae-ho/Ha Joon, LYOL or Park Hyung-sik, here), or other things (Bloodhounds 😇).

My favorite skim was for Gong Yoo in Silent Sea when I also didn't even have the sound on, because 왜? WHY? 😉

@linarrick I wish I could distribute fractional beans in the "official tally!!" That's what the no-rules Fan Wall Roundup is for, tho ;) I can count what I want to count!

3

I don’t really keep a tally of my dropped dramas as I always feel compelled to finish shows if I do. I also don’t count dramas as ‘dropped’ if I only watched one episode.

From what I remember:

HEAVENLY IDOL - I liked the leads but even they weren’t enough the save whatever trash fire hell this drama was

BAIT - Waaay too dark to see anything

OUR BLOOMING YOUTH - Dropped at the halfway mark, preferred the second leads over the insufferable main leads

DOONA - Wasn't my cup of tea, still this one hurts as I was so close to finishing it, buuuut the ML annoys me to no end

STRONG GIRL NAM-SOON - I gave this drama multiple tries and I just couldn’t get into it. The screenshots and gifs looked fun so I was experiencing a lot of FOMO with this one

MY DEAREST - I’ve been stuck on episode 16 for weeks now, I don’t know if I’m deluding myself that I’ll finish or not but after vaguely reading spoilers about double amnesia…

I'm so very new to K-Dramas (having on started getting into this in the late summer this year and so I've been bingeing here and there to find out what I like or dislike... and there are a few I've dropped:

1. NEVERTHELESS - I am not a fan of seeing toxic relationships and a F***boi as the ML in dramas I watch unless there are other elements balancing things out.

2. CINDERELLA AND THE FOUR KNIGHTS - Everyone in this series is just unlikeable.

3. OH MY BABY - The FL's desperation for a child is just cringe. A lot of women hear their biological clock ticking and dealing with women's reproductive health issues and it's great to see a drama attempting to address all that. But the execution is exactly the best and I would have liked to see the story handle it differently. Instead we see the FL trying to make the best of choosing between 3 crappy potential sperm donor candidates.

4. SONG OF THE BANDITS - I really wanted to like this one but it seemed... off.

I'm proud of myself, I've dropped more dramas this year than last year. Mostly because they bored me.
These include The Heavenly Idol, The Secret Romantic Guesthouse, Moon In The Day, Island and Oh! Young-shim. I usually gave up after the first two or three episodes.

Delightfully Deceitful started well, but at some point the steam was gone.
Somehow I never got round to watching the last two episodes of Stealer: The Treasure Keeper and at some point I forgot all about it.
I liked the first few episodes of Heartbeat, but later the magic was lost.

I should have dropped My Lovely Liar much earlier, ML was dull and boring, but I kept watching because everyone else was so into it and wondered why I wasn't seeing it.
In Joseon Attorney it was FL which I just found bland so I didn't want to keep watching.
In Strangers Again, I found both ML and FL unbearable towards the end.
Real Has Come: actually all were unbearable.

2023 - dropped All English speaking dramas
I watched zero English speaking dramas (does it count as a drop if I don’t even start)

ZERO

If I’m not reading subtitles- I’m not watching it. I find this revelation kinda weird.
I racked my brain for why this is and here is what my 2nd voice said:
With English speaking dramas you watch 50 shows hoping for 1 great one. So many are forgettable. The last great English show I remember watching was The Queens Gambit from 2020. I can’t think of another great English speaking show I watched in 2021 or 2022.
With Kdramas the expectation is that the show is great and the exception (dropped shows) is that the show just isn’t for you for whatever reason.

I have barely watched any English-language dramas since I start falling down the K-Drama Rabbit Hole (TM) this summer. And even any English-language ones I watch are dubbed shows.

My Netflix algorithm definitely reflects this and I am contemplating paying for the premium version of Viu as well.

The exception is if I go to the cinema to watch a show with friends and the odd streaming movie here and there. But that's it. And I find that I'm not missing much at all with the state Hollywood is currently in with the exception of a few very well-done shows like ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING.

My Netflix profile is 90% Korean recommendations. In fact I have created a fake profile where I never save anything to 'My List', nor watch anything at all, just so I can go there and see what else is on offer for the vaguely normal people. If I find something interesting I switch back to my real profile and search for it (joking that NF will probably have a heart attack to discover I've watched something in English!).

I do watch the odd English language drama but am so used to Korean/ Spanish/ German/ French/ Polish/ Scandinavian and reading subtitles now, it's a momentary shock when I hear my own language coming from the TV. 😄 I also notice a lot more background, like train and bus stop destinations, advertising hoardings, etc because I've developed the habit of reading words on screen so my eyes just go straight there.

If one English language drama sticks in my mind it's Silo (streaming on Apple), a dystopian sci-fi series that keeps the viewer in the dark and constantly guessing, never really knowing more than the characters (who have no knowledge of history, of technology, of anything we know and take for granted today) and are beginning to wake up to the possibility they have been deliberately kept in ignorance of human progress. If there's one thing I really love it's working out what happens next, why, and where the whole thing is going, and Silo is great on that score and very well done.

Real Has Come and Live Your Own Life: Maybe I’m not cut out for weekenders, or these two failed to offer the right combo of appealing characters and plot progress.

My Dearest: Found it hard to get back into the torture, separation and angst after the break.

King the Land: Lost interest once the romance ramped up. I’m not sure why — I just stopped looking forward to the show.

Strong Girl Nam Soon: Dropped when it became evident it wasn’t the show I’d hoped it would be. The best parts of the early episodes were more like happy accidents rather than indications of script quality or depth.

Here's another "Drama Chat" idea based on your KTL experience, Peach.

So many times, dramas are grippingly fascinating as the romance between the lead (and even secondary!!) couples ramps up, but then once the episode 8 kiss (or whatever consummation) happens...sigh, the drama drops the ball, and we lose interest. Which dramas maintained their narrative excitement after the couple, couples, and how did they DO IT??

This loss of interest once the couple IS is exactely what happened to me for Touch your heart. I found it very sweet at the beginning, and pushed my romance-loving friend to watch it. But I could not finish because for me the story was finished. You need to have something else at stakes (or very very intense chemistry such as Hidden love or Fake it till you make it).

This will significantly change my Bean Count because I was going to give A Good Day to Be a Dog, like, 5 beans (no, I don't care how it ends).

Oh, you got me where I live. I am a serial dropper, so prepare for... A LOT.

*WORST OF EVIL* - great style and the best the JCW has ever acted, but the plot was just not all there. Rom-com esque plot points, a total waste of a secound lead, and, overall, a very boring narrative execution of the premise.

*SECRET GUEST HOUSE* - At first I didn't feel like watching it 'cause it looked to kitch-y. Then I was semi intrigued by the mystery - but, as I told a friend - the moment I know who the crown prince is, I'm OUT. I was wrong. I couldn't handle the kitch and the whole bubbly shebang (which is a me thing, tbh), so I dropped it the moment I had a SOLID SUSPICIOUCON about who the crown prince is and checked online to confirm. Also I donno why they did the solider character dirty with his wig. His head looked like a turnip. I was like, what are you hiding under that WIG? SECRETS?

*ISLAND* - at times a Drama tells you what it is during the first ten minutes and you gotta listen.

*LONGING FOR YOU* - could have been a decent show (if a little bit out there) had the leads were not insufferable. My patiance is running thin to cop characters showing police burtality and the drama being like "ohhh he's such a scamp!"

"BATTLE FOR HAPPINESS* - good one, I liked it - however, the central mystery was solved a TAD to early (ep 14 or 15) and I lost intrest in seeing how it wrapps up. IT IS SUPER FUN, though, with great character progression.

*TAXI DRIVER* - Was I the only one bothered that our quirky group of misfits vigillantees was *Checks notes* taking criminals to an offsite location where they are imprisioned by an organ trafficar loan shark under unbeliveably inhumane conditions? Also, the show was carried by the OST and the ML bomber jacket + sunglasses + fingerless outfit look.

*MY LOVELY LIAR* - I fogrot I dropped it, which should tell you more than enough how little I cared. My faves were the tarot reading girl and the baker guy. I would watch a show about them.

*MOON IN THE DAY* - the description of FL as a "firewoman who never lost a life" (sometimes it's out of the firefighter control) alongside the too sweet moment of dramatically resuracting that dog told me it was not for me.

TRUST that I have dropped quite a few more. However I don't really have anything interesting to say about most of them.

Oasis I liked the casting but the story was way too cliché.
The Uncanny Counters 2 It didn't have the magic of the first season.
Strong Girl Nam-Soon It was worst than the first season.
Queenmaker I don't remember 😅
Cold Blood Intern I didn't like the characters.
Oh! Young-Shim Everything was bad.
Good Bad Mother The story of the worst mother in the world.
Arthdal Chronicle 2 I'm still in the deny and kept the episodes on my computer thinking I will watch them one day.
Bloodhounds Abs can't save everything.

Well, that was interesting. I printed out your list and using MDL realized I well on my way to a decent bean count. My dropped list falls roughly into two groups: early drops and well-underway but can't stands-no-more group.
Early drops for "can't connect/ho hum" include Heavenly Idol, Divorce Attny Shin, Secret Romantic Guesthouse, A Time Called You, Han River Police, Strong Girl Nam-soon. Special mention goes to The Glory for over the top torture, My Lovely Boxer for the grifter ML who tricks, bullies & gaslights the FL and sadly Song of the Bandits that I wanted to love but couldn't (study Sergio Leone again director-nim).
Harder to drop were shows at the middle or near end. Crash Course in Romance just revived my parent-teacher PTSD and Jinny's Kitchen</b simply stopped being fun with all the corporate male hierarchy . Lastly Borah! Deborah was a disgusted hard drop after the FL was degraded/shamed for the 10th time. I see My Dearest appears twice so I get a bean for season one but nothing could induce me to finish the angst fest of # 2. Amnesia twice, seriously?

Unlock The Boss - My favorite character died.

Big Bet 1&2 - I began this solely for Sohn Seok-ku. I began watching the episode his character was introduced in season 1. By the time season 2 aired, I thought the whole show in general dragged even though I love love some performances in here.

Trolley, Lies Hidden In My Garden - Despite the beautiful start and or perfect momentum it built up, I had to give them up for my peace of mind.

Red Balloon - I will and always remain team Seo Ji-hye. But, at episode 18, I just didn't bother anymore as it seemed like it lost steam. This however isn't Bye Felicia, I'm going to complete it before the end of the year or when the spirit gingers me.

Brain Works, Behind Your Touch - I loved the first episode, no doubt. But it was one those dramas where if I missed a week or a beat, I'm gone.
If anything, I followed BYT faithfully with the recaps.

Triple KKKokdu - I'm so sorry Kim Jung-hyun, Cha Chung-hwa, and Kim In-kwon. The trio of you couldn't save this collosal mess from a drop.

Oasis - That time in Korean history is not a palatable setting for me. I just couldn't keep up.

Queenmaker - Dropped at ep 1. Powerful as it was, I thought it was simply a makjangfest without an aim.

Queen of the Mask Ep 5 - I'm just done with bad blood dramas that were airing at the time and this one especially was not satisfactory. I loved the revenges that were dished before I dropped it though. I have to give it that credit.

Delightfully Deceitful - I just couldn't stand the female lead. No offense. It is so sad cause it's the first Kim Dong-wook drama I'm dropping.

King The Land - I'm surely not a Jun-ho fan. King The Land helped me realize that. Somehow I enjoyed him in The Red Sleeve Cuff but it just wasn't clicking here. I look forward to his next project though and hope he's actually acting in there.

Revenant - Ghosts...I could only survive the premiere week. Any other follow-up was via recaps.

Heartbeat, My Lovely Liar, Han River Police - This is one of the dramas that excite me in the premiere but I drop like hot potato once I'm done with the two episodes. Also the kind of dramas i watch out of solidarity for the leads but I'm sure I'm not going beyond two episodes.

Not Others - The recaps already made me know mother and daughter remained in their loop. However loving it is, i also find it parasitic. So i just wanted to leave it ending as palatable as it did at Ep 10. I'll forever love the Golden Poop episode. It is my highlight of the drama. The tough conversation between mother and daughter was pure gold and the writing was pure sex.

The First Responder 2 - Premiere week drop.
I thought they had repented from their disservice to Sohn Ho-jun in season 1. Alas! They were just about to top it.

Destined With You - Dropped at 14. Continued with recaps to the end.
At this point I was already tired of Hong-ju. Aeng-cho should have the center of the story and Hong-ju...

...the back story. I loved it, but I just had to drop it.

Dang! The list is long.

Of all this, the drop that really hurt the most was Unlock My Boss. It hits harder when I drop dramas because my favorite character died in it. I'm sorry but no charismatic male or female lead, or even the fanboy service I have for the leads is saving that drama from a drop once they do this.
Taxi Driver suffered it in 2021, The Good Detective 2 suffered it in 2022. Unlock My Boss was the one taking the blow this year. All of them are superb dramas. That, is not in doubt.

Kokdu: Season of Deity
Strong Girl Nam-soon
Forbidden Marriage
The Real Has Come
Poong Season 2
My Lovely Liar

May come back to it:
Love to Hate You.
One Day Off
Moving
Perfect Marriage Revenge

Still airing and may drop:
Live Your Own Life. I've made it further than expected. The "will we finally see her live her own life?" carrot-dangling is working I guess...

DROPPED:
THE HEAVENLY IDOL: I started it because I like Go Bo-Gyeol's performance in HI BYE MAMA and this was going to be a lead role. The idol part was terrible; the heavenly part was horrible and Kim Min-Kyu's acting was a fail; the whole premise and execution was a train wreck.

FAMILY: THE UNBREAKABLE BOND: Again, I started it because of the FL, Jang Na-Ra, but right off the bat the characters were unlikeable and the story line was dead body stinky bad.

The two shows I dropped (never fully watched) but lurked about in the comments were the weekenders:

THE REAL HAS COME: Repetitive drivel at its worst

LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE: How much emotional abuse and Uee's "deer in the headlights" expression can one viewer take every weekend?

A bunch in my dropped list is because I lost interest, disliked characters or storylines, not my genre, disappointment and just had too much dramas on my list I couldn't be bothered to care for the rest of the story. 😅

Oh gosh, it's almost that time of year! O:
I'm usually patient with my drama watching or I'm pretty bad at dropping shows. 🤷

DROPPED:
Castaway Diva 8/12 = Just did not enjoy this after the first few episodes, but I tried. Coming into this show, I was not expecting the domestic & family abuse. I do not care about the evil dad or his outcome at all.

Delightfully Deceitful 2/16 = Probably didn't engage me enough at the time and I was busy with other dramas. I was perplexed about the vibe of the show. I want to go back and give it another try though....

Family: The Unbreakable Bond 2/12 = Lack of Eng subs was the main problem and then the reviews seemed bad, lacking comedy, etc. so I never gave it another chance.

The Heavenly Idol 9/12 = Gahhh... I tried. Kim Min Gyu was handsome and cute. I think he did well in his role. I barely remember the story though. It was bland and the villain was boring. Not scary.

Almost dropped???
Arthdal Chronicles.... I'm not feeling much for any of the characters or the story. I paused on it because I was busy with My Dearest and stuff. Might drop... I still have time! And my current drama plate is small. XD *signs of a delusional fan*

The Escape of the Seven = Only two episodes left! I'm disappointed at some of the direction, but I want to finish and see what happens in the end.

Random note: I was reading the drama list and comments here and I was blanking on Joseon Attorney. I knew it was familiar and I had watched it....
Then I remembered.
This was one hard-earned bean!!!!

Shows I dropped because I found at least one of the leads creepy AF
19th Life
Destined With You
TOT9T 1938

Got bored (sometimes it was a "me" thing, sometimes the show was really bad)
Kokdu
Oh Young Shim
CEO-dol Mart
Live Your Own Life
The Heavenly Idol
Delivery Man
My Man Cupid

Just not for me
Doctor Cha
The Worst of Evil

I don't remember why I dropped them (I'll give them a second chance in the future).
Unlock the Boss
Brain Works
Our Blooming Youth
King The Land

At least one of the leads was extremely annoying or except for the leads everyone else were just plain awful (or both?)
Family
Love to Hate You
Bo Ra!
Strangers Again
The Interest of Love
The Real Has Come
Castaway Diva

Other reasons
The Matchmakers: the show is great but the pace is killing me. I have that problem with historical/costume shows. They have to give me big drama or big comedy, otherwise I can't focus. I'll try again in the future.
The Glory: too much. I almost got sick watching it.
Perfect Marriage Revenge: I didn't get the motivation for the revenge. I'll probably try again in the future for the comedy.

Reading the comments, I realized I haven’t watched as many 2023 dramas as I thought I had. But it sounds like I’m not missing too much. As I’m still playing catch up from previous years, here is my list:

Melo Is My Nature - the quirky was just not the right kind of quirk for me
A Dream of Splendor (China) - It’s so beautifully filmed and has strong female leads, I tried to push through, but I just couldn’t get past the fact that it bored me.
Chuno - I made it to episode 8, but kept thinking, do I really wanna watch another 16 hours of this? The answer was no.
Be My Princess (China) - Despite good reviews, I couldn’t get past the very dull male lead.
Personal Taste - I admire Son Ye Jin, but hated how her character was written.
Bora Deborah! - I tried so hard to finish out of my loyalty to Yoo In Na, but finally called it quits two episodes from the end.
Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 - Just too over the top for me.
The Moon Embracing the Sun - I made it a bit further in my third attempt to watch this classic, but I think I’m done for good.

Dramas I SHOULD HAVE DNF’d:
Dine with Love (China) - I loved the food segments, but never warmed up to the male lead
About Time - Such wasted story potential. And I didn’t find the hero remotely appealing
Moonshine - a train wreck of a show which cemented my disinterest in Hyeri
Joseon Attorney - I only finished this bc my best friend is a huge fan of Woo Do Hwan. The female actress just about put me to sleep with her performance.
Doctor Stranger - love the characterization of the lead, but everything else was a disaster
Ending Again - even though it was a short series, it was still too long.

I have dropped more dramas than last year, but only one from 2023 : Numbers.
I though that my love for Choi Jin Hyuk could make me see it. But the bad acting, the overpresent music and the nonsense plot were an ordeal. I was watching while reading, and cut 2 eps before the end. I tried for so long because on paper this drama should have be my jam: case of the week procedural (or similar) with Choi Jin Hyuk.

I learned a lesson: if I do not like the male lead and really want to hurt him everytime he appears, its better to drop fast. When I do not feel a drama, it will not get better.

I dropped only two dramas this year. There were a few that I slogged through for an actor but in hindsight, should've dropped (Kim Jae-won in King the Land, Shin Jae-ha in Taxi Driver 2), and a few I don't know why I didn't drop as they were a combination of terrible and/or boring (The Heavenly Idol, Our Blooming Youth).

-My Dearest, which was polarizing -- some Beanies who watched it, wished they hadn't, while others thought it was the best drama of the year. I just had no motivation to catch up, and because of my lack of motivation, I couldn't focus on the plot and history.

-Daily Dose of Sunshine, which I dropped for my mental health. It was depressing (already depressed) me. Before dropping, the patients' stories were told in a series of flashbacks, and I had to force myself to finish each flashback because I knew if I paused in the middle, I wouldn't be able to press play again.

I do think both dramas are worth watching, but I can't see myself returning to them just because of the sheer volume of new shows to watch.

As an ex-mental depression patient before, I was in wary position to watch Daily Dose of Sunshine as well. I did found a huge struggled especially when PBY starting to get into depression mode (so much related to this and those triggered all my memories during the dark times)....

But, I was so glad and proud of myself that I managed to watch it until the end. And I did overcame my depression after few years. One thing that I love this drama is that I can show it to my husband of what I am not capable to speak to him before. This drama bringing the some important highlight, which my husband did not understand my situation/ position during my dark hours.

I wish all good for you, my dear beanie @panshel...as I am in better position now and move forward, I hope you will find one as well.

@fydea I applaud you for your courage 👏🏻
I liked Daily Dose of Sunshine because I felt like I learned so much and it made me a better more empathetic person.
I wasn’t sure I could finish such a serious show, but I’m glad I did.

While there were some shows I dropped just because they were incoherent, bad or boring--Kkkkkkdu, Island, Oh, Young Shim, Uncanny Counter 2 are among those, I stuck with most I started, but 4 I dropped stand out to me as ones that I actually felt some animosity for by the time I decided to drop them.

1. Delightfully Deceitful. Neither delightful, nor really deceitful, a story of abused child geniuses turned into a criminal gang. Made it through to the point where I started making up songs about the Jeokmok kids (the child gang) and realized that I risked losing my empathy for abused child geniuses being turned into criminals and I should stop.

2. Behind your touch: A pants-rip roaring comedy about grabbing people's buttocks, abuse of women, and brutal serial murderer. Made it through 2 of the brutal murders. Wasn't laughing my a** off.

3. The Good Bad Mother This had stirring elements of revenge and child abuse, but I couldn't make it to the part where it showed that parental abuse could be continued if the adult child was in an incapacitating accident, which is, I guess, a valuable thing to keep in mind, but I didn't necessarily need a show about it. Also apparently included a moving depiction the suffering of pigs, but I'd quit the show before the second pig burning episode.

4. Castaway Diva: The first four episodes of this one were a moving story of male abuse and male abuse victims + a song from a young woman who was also abused and on an island for years, but, in a classic misdirect, only a minor plot point to get into the story of the male abuser and male victims. I think this show should have been called Castaway Diva: The Tragic Story of Abused Sons and then I might have been able to finish it.

Good Bad Mother Those poor pigs 🐷 🐷 🐷 ‼️
Also on my Bean list was this one too

Castaway Diva Stabbing Dad made it to Episode 12 ‼️
It’s a good thing that Diva was only 12 episodes, other wise he’d still be out there stabbing and stalking ‼️
Stabbing Dad is now my 2023 RoundUp most annoying character. The writer relished in torturing the kids, the audience, a pox on that person, a ban of their works ! Where’s my torch , my pitchfork, I’m table flipping mad at this jerk. ‼️ j/k 🙄

I was thinking of writing a roundup of this kdrama year: Horrible Husbands, Despicable Dads" but then I thought that these guys were necessary to highlight the heroines, which I do like! I don't know about Castaway Diva, though, since I quit it for exactly that reason.

MY LOVELY LIAR, DESTINED WITH YOU
Same issue with both of these shows -It became hard to watch when the 2ML was obviously the better actor and out acted the ML too many times.
Also in regards to DWY, I did't find it cute or romantic when the ML flirted, tried to kiss or pledged his love to the FL, who repeatedly told him to stop, while simultaneously being in a relationship with his girlfriend/fiance.

DELIGHTFULLY DECEITFUL
Started out with promise and then went downhill. Also victim to false advertising with promo posters that looked nothing like the overall show.

SONG OF THE BANDITS
Watched for the wonderful Kim Nam-gil but unfortunately there was something about it that didn't work for me.

RACE
This has to be the quickest drop for me. There was a scene in the first episode which was depicting an event where people would participate in the Last word Challenge- the latest "craze" in which people take pictures of their mock funerals and share what they want their last words to be.
I'm aware that this is just a tv show and should be taken lightly but to associate the subject matter of death with a "craze" for entertainement fodder in such a trivial manner, let alone in a country with the 4th highest suicide rate in the world, I find irresponsible and offensive to the families and friends who have lost loved ones.
Sadly, two weeks after this episode another Kpop idol took their own life.

Onwards and Upwards to a better 2024.

This year I attempted a few live watches instead of one or none, and I dropped four of them.

Unlock the Boss No special reason, although I was beginning to get restless and bored and the whole nonsense of him being trapped in the phone became less entrancing than annoying.

The Heavenly Idol I lost patience with it and even the Idol scenes were fatuous and boring. Maybe I thought some interesting characters would show up, but they didn't. Dropped at ep 5.

Celebrity This took me less than 20 minutes. I'm obviously too old to consider influencers fascinating.

Castaway Diva Not what I had hoped. Childish FL who seemed to have regressed in her 15 years on the island, plus a childish washed up superstar (I'd have gladly dropped them both overboard tied together) ghastly boring ballads (to my western ears), tedious mystery over which brother is her childhood friend ...

I know a lot of people were unhappy about the abuse in ep 1, but frankly, those two teenagers stole the show for me, and the plastic shiny mess it turned into once the adults took over was a disappointment. Dropped after ep 3.

I also tried watching some older shows I had missed, and dropped One Spring Night about 2/3 through because I couldn't stand one second more of the stupid, selfish, childish, dense FL. I did relent for a few hours and announce I would finish it, but alas I lied.

Interestingly, I can put up with most MLs but can never forgive an irritating FL. They are too often annoyingly clumsy, childish and capricious while the ML might be a boneheaded dullard but that grates less on me. When I think of how far women have come in the past decades, it drives me crazy to see k-drama FLs acting like bratty children with no self-control.

Listen sistah! I started work in the 70s before equality was enshrined in law and we were paid less than men, treated as an irrelevance, undermined and not taken seriously. So when i see you silly FLs purportedly holding down important career positions but acting like stupid babies it really rubs me up the wrong way!

At the other end of the scale, if we aren't portrayed as silly children, we are evil conniving snakes - but that's another discussion. 😄

This year I dropped:

Vincenzo 4 eps. I can't watch shows with too many unlikeable and too msny unreadable characters. I need something to hamg on.

The Good Detective 4 eps. Very boring.

Tell Me What You Saw 3 eps. If it can't make me care for anyone after 3 hours, it's a drop.

The Dark Hole 3 eps. I can't do horror. Even for Lee Joon Hyuk.

Are You Human Too Passed the halfway mark. It got to unreadably angsty and simplistic. Finished by reading the recaps.

My Perfect Stranger 2 eps. Very balnd and very badly directed.

Love All Play 4 eps. Too much bitterness.

I'm not a live-watcher, so only one is from 2023.

As a long kdrama fan and Dramabeans reader here, I am totally super picky on my drama watchlist 😅😅😅...
Since I have few more days left in December, I did have few drama that dragged to be finish 😬.

Destined with You: I finally finished after wayyyyyyyyy to long.
The Devil Judge: almost there...
Shadow Detective S2: almost there as well
Arthdal Cronicle S2: even LJG could not pursue me to finish it yet 😭
The Squid Game: do I have to finish it this year? 🤨😂
Cafe Minamdang: forgot where I left it last time 🙈
Hometown: no idea (whether to finish or to drop)
Song of Bandits: I'll find another time for you then...

There are too many drama in my watchlist, but after reading comment here, I decided to not proceed with play button 😆.

Woah. Dropped 12 dramas of that list - and not counting dramas from the reserves I tried to watch this year - and then didn’t. I’m a fast dropper (one episode is sometimes enough). I’m pretty sure that some of these could have grown on to me if I gave them another chance, but life’s busy and the watchlist is long. 😅 So here goes, categorized by drop reason.

The romance just wasn’t working for me:
*See You in My 19th Life
*Crash Course in Romance

The “ummm” category:
*The Good Bad Mother (to be fair, I tried this knowing it would most likely not be for me)
*Behind Your Touch (but very glad I watched the final minutes as proposed by Mindy!)

I couldn’t connect to main characters/didn’t like/would have liked them to behave differently:
*Dr Cha
*Castaway Diva (I’m sorry, PEB, it’s not your fault!)
*My Dearest (I feel bad about this one. I didn’t even get to episode 2, also because of the looming devastation, which was actually the main reason 🤔)

Toxic or plain frustrating lead/secondary characters (former category, but amped up):
*The Interest of Love
*Strong Girl Namsoon

I just lost interest in these/forgot I could go on watching:
*Moon in the day

Will try to finish sometime, just couldn’t go on watching because of time management/silly reasons:
*Agency
*My Lovely Liar

Phew. 😅

2023 shows I dropped:

The Heavenly Idol - incoherent
Island - unintentional, just didn’t go back to it after the break
Kokdu - intense stupidity
Oh! Youngsim - noisy and cheap, no likable characters
The Real Has Come - turns out weekenders just aren’t for me
The Uncanny Counter 2 - repetitive; over-the-top villains
Behind Your Touch - offensive; hated the FL
Doona! - Suzy
Castaway Diva - false advertising; didn’t like either FL

Last year I only dropped a handful of current shows and it should have been more. I’ve gotten better at dropping when a show goes south, but also much better at not starting something I’m likely to dislike.

The Heavenly Idol - incoherent

That show is getting a good old fashioned gang of thugs with pipes and boards beatdown in the reviews. Somehow I managed to finish it.
I do wonder who is able to pass off scripts such as this. Is there no oversight ? Editors ? Someone with one shred of an idea on how to tell a friggen story ⁉️
I suspect most scripts involve drunkeness on the part of the writer, it would explain much.

When I first looked at this list I was like wow it’d be easier to name shows I didn’t drop than the ones I dropped. But on closer inspection, I don’t think I dropped that many, there’s actually more that I didn’t start at all because I read comments and reviews and decided to go 🙅🏻‍♀️. The ones I did drop are:

Our Blooming Youth : I didn’t technically drop this because I watched the ending but I did drop a lot of episodes in the middle/sped through another few. I think the plot was just dragging its feet and also going in circles at the same time, and there wasn’t enough in terms of romance to keep me afloat through the narrative mess.

The Real Has Come : I don’t even remember why I dropped this, it was so early on - it was probably because niether the story nor the characters made me interested enough to want to push through the long weekender schedule.

Good Bad Mother : same as OBY, did see the ending but I didn’t exactly watch the show in full 🤷‍♀️ The revenge was questionable and the mum’s character arc was even more frustrating.

Bitch x Rich : didn’t really feel inclined to root for anyone in the show, especially not the FL, so dropped early on.

King The Land </b: I feel like this was a paint by the numbers rom-com classic and despite being a rom-com enthusiast, I just found this one boring 😭

A Time Called You : I think I just wasn’t in the mood to deal with the slow pace and melo vibe so quit this one rather early too.

Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun : literally no clue what was happening here plot wise, dropped after first week.

Live Your Own Life : another weekender I couldn’t hack - not enough OTP development, really frustrating family members everywhere and it was even more frustrating just seeing the FL be stepped on :(

Strong Girl Nam-soon: every plot line I found uninteresting, the OTP crumbs were the only thing I stuck around for after a while and even then I wasn’t getting enough/ I somehow became more interested in the villain.

Ok, I totally get you with your take on Our Blooming Youth, but did you watch episode 13? I think that was the single strongest episode, and it has an absolutely thrilling (and long, and very well choreographed) action scene culminating in some very very good emoting from Park Hyung-sik. That episode is worth it if you have a spare hour 😉

I dropped most things this year. Even Arthdal Chronicles even though Teacher was mesmerising on screen. But my head hurt and it was dragging. I dropped King the Land because it felt like they didnt even have a script.
I dropped Moving 3 times. I just didn´t care about those characters at all, so even if I tried to get into it, it wasn´t meant to be.
Destined with you had so much potential to be a goofy black comedy with the red hand as a storyteller and take a completely different funky direction. but they had to stir up the mud. My suggestion to writers, that if you have a cringy camp element, play it up and you´ll have something irresistable that will be remembered for years. See Kill Me Heal Me or Zombie Detective.
I do wish Tot9T had ended when it was cute and funny, because all that japanese litter was unnecessary and the stakes didnt feel as high as the drama had wished they would seem. But I didnt drop, I just deleted all the stuff after ep 8.
I didn´t have time for My Dearest, I´ll find a peaceful moment at some point. It is not something to watch while constantly being distracted.

I have no qualms about dropping a drama. Someone once told me that if you don’t finish a book you are reading for pleasure, then perhaps it’s not the right time for you and the book. I think the same applies to dramas. Depending on what is happening with my life or my mood, the timing for a drama and me may not be right—also, I don’t have time for a drama that doesn’t do something for me like make me laugh, think, or feel. For me, watching a drama should spark something positive precisely because it’s my choice, not my job or my homework to watch; if it doesn’t, I will Marie Kondo a drama and say thanks and goodbye.

I dropped a lot of dramas in 2023.
DROPPED after trying them out and didn’t get past the first episode:
Kokdu (How could a doctor be so dumb?)
King the Land (Pretty but felt like a very long product placement)
Oh! Young-Shim (What was that?)

DROPPED due to lack of interest to continue on after a few episodes:
The Heavenly Idol (diabetic or dialogue imbalance—either too much sugar or not enough—don’t know, but ended up not caring)
The Matchmakers
Moon in the Day

DROPPED because if the drama makes me feel more putupon than the lead, then I’m out.
Live Your Own Life (Funny, because I gutted out The Real Has Come, but I think it was because the FL had some real spark in the first half—as exemplified by the ridiculous, but effective wedding interruption, but the writers didn’t give Hyo Shim even one tiny vertebrae to stand up against her awful family by the time I left)
