Perfect Marriage Revenge: Episodes 5-6
by missvictrix
With the drama hitting its halfway mark already, our heroine realizes the “marriage” part of her plan, but the “perfect revenge” not so much. For every step forward she takes, our antagonists up the ante with bigger machinations and bolder moves. But at least our heroine has a sexy husband that adores her now?
EPISODES 5-6
For some reason, the full-on soapiness of this drama didn’t fully hit me until this week. Is it all the wild plot reveals? The scheming? The fan-servicey romantic relationships? Either way, we have tons of plot happenings this week, and to top that off, some steamy moments between our leads.
We open up with our unconscious hero dragged to the ER and Yi-joo losing her mind when Do-gook disappears from his hospital bed. But don’t worry, he’s fine, and he grab-saves her in the hospital hallway. This is skinship #1 of about 431 instances this week, but it might be my favorite because they’re still so tentative around each other, and all this week’s episodes we see Do-gook trying to (somewhat respectfully) plow his way past Yi-joo’s immaculately constructed walls of self-protection. I love this dynamic; it’s making the show for me.
Yi-joo can’t hide her concern for Do-gook even when she tries, but he tells her that there isn’t a doctor in the ER who can help him. We learn (thanks to a bizarro intruding psychiatrist) that Do-gook’s been under treatment for his panic disorder and is doing loads better. Let’s just focus on getting married, he urges Yi-joo.
Well, get married they do! Do-gook’s mom Yeon-hwa — swiftly becoming my favorite character and possibly my favorite samonim ever — makes it happen. Before you know it, invitations are sent, the hall is reserved, and Yi-joo tries on dresses again (cameo by Hong Seok-chun). At this point I’m honestly perplexed why Yi-joo looks so miserable. She’s in a gorgeous dress with Do-gook staring at her all gaga, her wedding is coming up, and the miserable Se-hyuk is on-site to embarrass himself and get put in his place. Do-gook gently but firmly pushes him away from Yi-joo (Counter: 1).
Yi-joo is even more miserable when she meets up with Jung-wook — despite Do-gook earnestly asking her to stay away from him — and this scene is a giant mess. Do-gook gently but firmly pushes his hyung away from Yi-joo (Counter: 2). Then he punches his brother to the floor after Jung-wook mercilessly taunts him. Oh boy, these two.
Afterwards, our OTP has words as well, with Yi-joo saying she was only trying to help, and Do-gook kind of half-destroyed by the desire to protect her and the knowledge that she obviously cares about him. But, he says if he tells her the backstory of his hyung’s accident, they’ll be crossing the line (her line), and he can’t do that. So instead he offers the swoony, “Don’t touch me if you can’t handle it. I’m already holding back enough.”
As we near the end of the episode, though, our first round of reveals come into play. Yi-joo and the chairwoman (now “Halmeoni” by request, aww) visit a shaman and a whole wealth of old secrets come out around Yi-joo’s grandfather. Back in his loan shark days he was responsible for the suicide of a pregnant woman and he’s always felt haunted by that; Yi-joo was adopted as a sort of atonement. But it only gets weirder when Yi-joo and Grandpa’s tea (literal and figurative) is interrupted by Mom. Grandpa hides Yi-joo in the closet (poorly) and she hears a host of shocking things — viz., that Grandpa should never admit that Yi-joo is the true daughter of her adoptive father.
This shocking scene cuts off abruptly, and the next thing we know Do-gook’s own shocking moment is interrupted by a call about Yi-joo. She’s at the police station, shell-shocked and missing her shoes. Her feet are all cut up, and our hero carefully washes them at home, tucks her into bed, and comforts her, not asking for her to explain. Now, was this just a case of terrible post-prod editing, or are we going to circle back to what happened in that time gap? We haven’t yet, and I find that super bizarre. As for the near panic attack that Do-gook was called away from? He’d picked up Yi-joo’s sketch book and was paging through drawings of her fatal car accident. The driver in the car she hits looks an awful lot like him…
No matter, it’s time for their nuptials! But while Do-gook is on cloud nine, Yi-joo is ready to have a breakdown, presumably because of what she’s previously learned about her parentage. Mom comes in and harasses her yet again; this woman has a talent for cruelty. Just when Yi-joo has had too much and is about to attack her with a vase of wedding flowers (really?), Do-gook steps in to prevent the assault. He quiets Yi-joo. He tells her she needs to be happy and make everyone jealous. That’s the plan, right?
Their walk down the aisle is positively epic, and I love the time the drama lingered on nailing this moment. We see Yi-joo finally turn the corner from misery chick to determined and slightly wicked heroine. She is actually able to bow to her mother after the ceremony, and hand it right back when Mom taunts her for her dad not being there.
Our couple arrives home, and Do-gook’s ready to bond over some wine. Yi-joo, not so much. Into her cave she goes. And tomorrow? Off on the honeymoon by herself lol. We’re rewarded for our patience, though, and so is Do-gook!
He turns up on the beach in a classy white shirt and looks every bit the hero. They bond. He tells her about the childhood accident that birthed his trauma. He makes skinship at every possible opportunity. She makes him walk barefoot in the water as some kind of exposure therapy (not thrilled with that one). And every night back at their accommodations, he’s relentless in his pursuit of sharing a bed with her. And if he can’t do that, he’ll just tease her mercilessly, like he does with the extended scene of the glassed-in bathroom and who’s going to watch first when they shower. LOL.
But behind all the flirting and innuendo, Do-gook is there for Yi-joo, almost to a fault. She finally opens up to him and tells him that she’s just learned her father is actually her biological father and everyone hid it from her; Do-gook lets her cry and cry. Yi-joo doesn’t have any details about her past yet, but for now she’s too exhausted to even think about it anymore. And that’s where Do-gook can help.
After a romantic speech about letting her use him in any way she can, he offers what he can in the moment: I’ll make it so you can’t think about anything for a while. *Fans self* They start making out, and when Do-gook pins her arms back on the bed (excuse me, sir!) we get our next ginormous plot twist: Do-gook has the death date on his wrist too. BOOM!
Meanwhile, there’s other sex being had by way of Yoo-ra and Se-hyuk — the former who is most assuredly using the latter, and it’s kinda sad. But really, Yoo-ra has her sights set on Jung-wook now. Never mind the sexy cane and history of blackmailing boards and unions to do his bidding — he’s the man she needs to get one over on Yi-joo. And he seems pretty easy to convince, because when Do-gook and Yi-joo return from their honeymoon for a family meal, Jung-wok shows up with a very-much-gloating Yoo-ra on his arm. This is super fun because it’s a) ridiculous and b) pits both sets of siblings against each other in a way that will hopefully bring our OTP even closer.
In addition to all this plot, there’s also quite a bit more going on in the background — Yoo-ra and Mom have it out, and we see Mom starting to lose her iron grip a bit. Mom’s also been involved with selling Yi-joo’s original paintings. Imagine waking up and finding out you’re a famous anonymous artist in the New York art scene. This blows up beautifully in favor of Yi-joo, and she effectively takes the Hanwool gallery away from Yoo-ra. Yi-joo also learns more about her parentage, and how her adoption into the family was actually a coincidence — no one discovered till later that she was the true daughter.
Well, with all the lineage questions, love affairs, and siblings wars at hand, this is getting quite messy! Good thing the entire Taeja Group family is so bloody fun. Whether it’s Jae-ho weeping at the wedding, Yeon-hwa being glorious and taking Yi-joo under her wing, or Halmoeni and her kickass earring cuffs — they are making this ride even more riotous.

What a fantastic set of episodes!!! We had so much plot movement, reveals, angst and then the delightful OTP scenes.
….This OTP is 💙
So much swoon, so much kilig, so much feelings.
I absolutely loved all the OTP scenes. The wedding scene was beautiful.. Sung Hoon looked devilishly handsome in that ‘fitted’ suit.. damn you PD, give the man good clothes!!
His confession was so heartfelt.. Him telling her his story made it all ‘real’. And then her telling him her worries and being herself in front of him..
I can’t think of a better way to bring them together.. just so beautiful.
And the bed scene, hubba hubba, made me feel things… phew!!!
I really like how the show goes back to how our leads deal with the emotions rather than focus on just the twists and turns. That’s what makes this show so enjoyable and makes us root for them.
Also, the sly face jaw man, whatever his name, will be seeing another girl of his getting engaged to a different man.. lol.. its a revenge that keeps on giving.. love it.
Do Guk is goals! 💙💙💙
He is teasing, flirting, kind and understanding. Even though he makes a lot of moves to get close to her, he always lets her choose. She can choose to see him take bath, she can choose to sleep with him, she can choose everything. He just stays by her side. And even participates in her revenge. The way he called Yura as sister in law and asked her to find a fine man for herself 😂😂. BURN!!
I understand a lot of it comes from this being his second chance but still love his character a lot.

I want to add another point.
When the show started it seemed like a standard story where the damsel is in distress and the chaebol ML came swooping in to help her. But as the story progressed we learn that both the leads are equally broken, have problems of their own, have their own family issues. So the way they take turns in caring for each other make us realise that they are more of less equal and it is nothing like a chaebol-candy relationship. They both need each other for comfort and trust.

I love how 'kilig' has become a popular word in DB, kind of like Beanies inside joke or inside words (?) xD

It’s a term from Philippines.
“The sudden feeling of an inexplicable joy
One gets when something romantic or idealistic occurs. A sweet rush of warmth and utter soul filing elation. “
It’s mostly used in all romantic situation. Feeling kilig! So many kilig moments etc.

This show shines in so many ways, but I'll highlight just one: The breakneck pace of the plot does not overshadow the viewer's emotional investment in the characters. Somehow PMR has managed to stuff into six episodes the plot points that another show wouldn't even dare cover in 16, and yet, checking the trope boxes doesn't mean we don't also feel for Yi-joo, sympathize with lonely Do-gook and long to be taken under the wings of Halmeoni and the glorious MIL. It's an achievement of writing (dialogue is on point) and acting (doesn't it seem that the cast is having as much fun as we are?) that should be celebrated.

It’s like the saying about putting lipstick on a pig. The most sumptuous costumes and intricate set pieces, and even stellar acting, won’t be able to compensate for a poorly written script, especially in the latter half of a show, when the faults become more evident.

Can we talk about the "bizarro-intruding psychiatrist" (@missvictrix's amazing phrase) for a moment, y'all?? Let me get straight/remember what happens in this scene:
1. She barges into a client's home, identifying herself only as "a friend."
2. She then reveals said client's diagnosis to someone else, just because she assumes this other person is his fiancée. What?
3. When she is correctly called on this gross negligence with regards to patient confidentiality by her client, she says to him (basically) "Yeah, whatever, the moment called for it!" Oh, is that how that works?
4. So, in response, he then physically takes her by the elbow and throws her out of his apartment? Hunh, what??
5. Her response to this man-handling is, "Hey!!! Don't be like this!?!" as he slams the door in her face. What-the-whatty-what??
6. He then re-opens the door so that he can toss her shoes back at her, and after re-slamming the door behind him, he shouts, "I'll see you at the clinic!!!" Um, 왜, WHY????
7. To which statement, and I'm NOT making this up, this so-called mental health professional replies, "Don't bother (coming to the clinic)!!!" Whaaaaat in the name of all that's good and holy???
Guess what? I don't care! I laughed and laughed at this scene. God, I love this show.

What made it so funny to me is so often in kdramas people go straight to other peoples' doctors and get their medical information no questions asked. This show found a way to take that, make it over the top and hilarious. I don't think we'll ever see that woman again, but they made her two minutes of screentime count.

If this is that actress's only appearance, I have to respect the hustle. She saw her one opportunity and took it with gusto. Love that for her.
Speaking of dubious doctors, I have long stated that nearly every doctor in dramaland should have their licenses revoked on the basis of the privacy violations alone - before even getting into the countless deaths on account of godawful medical inaccuracies. One weird counterexample; I didn't care for the drama Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha at all, but one thing I appreciated (and still remember because its so rare) is the FL's stubborn insistence on NOT sharing patients' confidential medical information. I was shocked.

Thanks @missvictrix for a recap that matched the whirlwind of developments this week, especially bringing up that weird shoeless scene that came out of nowhere, but did allow a very romantic footwashing—was that some sort of Christian imagery at work?
In fact, I was wondering for an episode and a half why Yi-Joo was so glum, given how well her revenge has been working out. Plus, though I admire her principles in at first denying Do-gook’s lustful impulses, in the name of not really loving him enough--still, come on, you have an expiration date flashing on your wrist! What’s wrong with a little roll in the hay with your putative husband, especially when he is exceptionally good looking and clearly is head over heels in love with you. ! I hope she doesn’t regret that she submitted in the end, although what’s with this “I can no longer hold back” from Do Gook. Of course you could have controlled yourself, buddy, you just don’t feel like it—although I understand, if he’s feeling his own expiration date!
Anyway, one might think from my comment that I am watching this just for the romance and the passionate kisses, but I want to assure everybody again that no, it’s the insight into the art world that is keeping me interested. I did notice that these episodes began with her dabbing paint on to on some sort of Jackson Pollock like abstract drip painting (but shouldn’t she have been working by pouring paint onto the canvas on the floor?) but then ended with her “anonymous” works being what looked like Georgia O’Keefe or Matisse influenced flower paintings.
Clearly, the underlying theme of this show is her searching for her artistic métier, taking “revenge” on the establishment art world of galleries run by evil Moms who try to exploit her by confining her into conventional paths, and then try to “kill” her creativity. I’m hoping for more erotic undertones in her work next week-- maybe with her husband as artistic muse!

My favorite scene was him coming up to her on the beach, if that wasn't a perfume advert come to life, idk what is. Sung Hoon was bringing his A game to this drama, he isn't the best actor, but I believe he loves him some Yi Joo.
The "Her love" will heal his trauma trope was in full display, but at least they show he goes to therapy, so baby steps.
The bed scene was ESCANDALO, I can't breathe, I can't stop myself. Breathe into these lips, 😂😜. Perfect combo of passion(watch throwing) and time stamp reveal.

Give this drama an award for pace. It's not enough. It won't be enough. And once again, I'm so sad that this is a 12-episode drama while also agreeing that 12 episodes might have just be the right fitting for this, irrespective of their choice to not give Sung Hoon a fitting wardrobe.
A wedding in episode 6😱. Color me gobsmacked. I was thinking the wedding would be the creme de la creme, the icing to crown it all in the finale after everything and everyone has been vanquished. Perfect Marriage Revenge is just on point.
I really don't understand how Do-guk became overwhelmed with guilt. Or was it that I wasn't paying enough attention to the story behind his trauma. His brother's property, which also doubles as the only keepsake he has of his mother, fell into the body of water - most likely when Do-guk and Jung-wook were having a disagreement and the push and pull sent the keepsake into the water. Jung-wook holds Do-guk by the collar and continually shakes him to go retrieve his keepsake, but somehow it's Jung-wook who fell into the water and not Do-guk. So why, why did Do-guk assume responsibility for something he didn't do. It reminds me of WWWSK where the younger brother decided to live a lie because his older brother refused to live the truth or was suffering from a victim complex (he didn't want the fact that he left his brother unattended to to be revealed) and so he feigned a selective memory loss just so his brother can finally have the memory he so desires. At least in WWWSK's case, the brother did rewrite the scene in his head. But in Jung-wook's case, he isn't confused about the events of that day. He is very much aware of the events of that fateful day. He knows that Do-guk lied. I might be wrong but he also knows that Do-guk assumed responsibility because of the damage to his leg. So I don't know why Do-guk is the one reeling in trauma the most from all this when he can call Jung-wook's BS in a second and all his carefully crafted machinations come crashing down.
It has to be that Do-guk feels guilty over the damage to his leg cause from all that I saw in the flashback and Do-guk's explanation, everything that happened was of Jung-wook's design. Jung-wook cause what happened to himself.
The wedding date discussion had me in stitches.
Halmoni : Have them married in a month.
Halmoni's Son : Isn't a month too much(I'm sure he meant too soon).
Yeon-hwa : Yes. A month is too much.(Husband sighs in relief that his wife agrees with him). Lucille Hall has an opening in 2 weeks. Let's have them married then.
So she's the real daughter. I wasn't expecting that. I had honestly thought she was her father's daughter but from another woman so they adopted her into the family at the death of her mother who was estranged from Mr. Han at the time( or her dad married Lee Jung-hye after her mom died). The drama surrounding her entry into the family really is makjang-ish.
However however, Yi-joo used her...

...newfound knowledge to wrist Han gallery out of Yu-ra and Jung-hye's hands in one swift moment.
So he also has a time machine on his hands. Wow! His statement in episode 2 where he said he wasn't strange to Yi-joo's identity now carries more weight.
But then the accident🤦🏽♂️.
It was only a matter of time before Do-guk works his way back into Taeja group. And with a wife out for blood and her evil sister wanting to integrate herself into her husband's family, then I'm sure the drama will be upped once again. Add in Jung-wook trying to rope Taeja construction into another financial debt with Hanwool, it can only get more interesting.
Yu-ra and Jung-wook are a nice pair. It only makes payday more sweet if you ask me. Kill two birds with a stone.
Do-guk's sweet talking...🤭🤭. This man can woo to save his life over and over again.
And the wedding photograph scene...Yi-joo jerking Yu-ra's hand off her was not enough for me. I'd have preferred they sent her to the back or to the end of the line so she can be cut without any regrets or loss to the other guys in the picture. I was thinking I'd see Se-hyeok in the order of photographs though 😅. But, anything to suck color off Yu-ra's face is fine by me, however minute.
So Yi-joo's mom is the cooking class madam. Talking about cooking class, we didn't have a scene there this week🙃. Need I remind them that we haven't confirmed if Yi-joo can now make eatable 'brick' for Yeon-hwa's son.

I was a little confused about the backstory too. I think Do Guk felt guilty for making his Hyung lose his precious possession, the only connection he had to his dead mother. But when the folks in the ship said he pushed him, it didn’t make sense. Are they making up stuff?
To me it seemed like Do Guk denied pushing his brother but no one believed him. And the family never really asked him what happened and kinda let it fade.
Also looks like the family is not aware of the harassment he was going thru because of Hyung. I can’t imagine them knowing and not standing up for Do Guk.

Perhaps as you said Do-guk did deny pushing his brother and no one believed him. His insistence on his innocence immediately died when the crowd pointed to Jung-wook's broken leg. I don't know what noble idiocy came into Do-guk's head in that moment, but I don't think it should result in him having to surrender his stake as a board member of Taeja group for Jung-wook. He basically let go of all his rights because Jung-wook broke a leg in an accident he inflicted on himself. And if we look at the timeline when Do-guk's father slapped him for the accident, it was after the leg injury was pointed out. So any strength to speak for himself one more time might have just left him and he resigned to whatever it was. And he might have just been reacting to the fact that a fall into the water body broke his brother's leg that it sent his brain and mouth mum. If the italicized is the reason for his trauma, I'd take it. But if it is as a result of something not close to this, I'll keep asking why he is living with the trauma in that sort of magnitude.
Furthermore, what I don't understand just like you is why he's traumatized by it and Jung-wook is living his own life sweetly. Do-guk still unsettles Jung-wook with respects to the incident but the way Do-guk rattles Jung-wook pales compared to how Jung-wook rattles Do-guk. Do-guk should be the one confidently holding the leash here and not Jung-wook, especially when they both know the truth of the incident.

Or he was being held in a position facing the deep water by Hyung which caused him the trauma. It’s possible that they both were dangerously located and Hyung was forcing him to go fetch his possession, while all along Do Guk is scared fearing he might fall into the water. A possible reason to be traumatized?

Do-guk was screaming for his hyung who was submerged in the body of water. I don't think his hyung held him in that position. I think Do-guk was transfixed in that position by the shock of perhaps seeing Jung-wook struggle in the body of water.
But I don't think that's the focal point of his trauma even if it might have contributed a bit, I think the crux of his trauma was seeing Jung-wook's broken legs. Everything might have culminated to that point but I'm definitely sure that was the defining moment and the beginning of his trauma.

I went back to the scene. Ep 6.
“He told me to jump in the water and find it. He held me by the collar and shoved me. I hung on for dear life. “
Hard to tell how he hung on for his dear life.
Yeah. I think the handicap of Hyung will never let him forget that moment.

Jung-Wook has anger issues because his father abandoned his mother and drove her out (or so he believes). For that he hates the step mother and her children especially Jung-Guk and abused his step brother every chance her got. The incident that hurt his leg was an attempt by him to kill his brother during the family cruise. Jung-Guk actually loves his brother and felt guilty and the trauma he has was the guilt that his bother almost died because of him. His recall of the incident was very hazy at best but since a number of people said he was the one who pushed his brother may he accepted it.

I knew it! Do-gook is a time traveller as well! Ha!
Finally a drama which has a fast paced plot, interesting characters and even some humour.
Another plus: the actors are not in "parallel dramas". It irritates the hell out of me to see Lee Seung-joon as the weak husband in Strong girl Nam-soon and the evil child-/wife-tormentor in Castaway Diva at the same time (the same goes for Lee Joong-ok who is in SGNS and CD as well).

This show continues to deliver to which I say thank you.
This OTP working with each other against their enemies is so satisfying. But even better, watching their relationship develop through caring and communication is so touching. There is no extended misunderstandings through blind trust of enemies or lack of communication. Their interactions give so many feels--Do Guk always making her feel safe with her food, her understanding that the boat incident was something traumatic for him instead of being suspicious of him, him telling her outright that he came because he missed her and that he liked her a lot, him placing her hand softly back on his face, etc. Their chemistry is amazing even though they are not bickering with one another, which is often how dramas create chemistry between couples. Here, it is precisely because they are honest with one another and have each other's back that their chemistry shines. Even when he tells her to use him, it's completely different than the Hyena "use me" scene. It doesn't seem sad; rather it seems generous and romantic. I love them.
Let the makjang of the show villains provide the dramatic tension, and let us have moments of satisfaction each show as one plot or another is foiled or exposed by the dynamic duo. And continue to prove that we can root for and be entertained by a main couple that is winning both against their enemies and with each other.

The couple scenes are nice. She's lucky to have him because she almost failed her plan at the wedding. For someone who said nothing in the past, trying to knock out her "mother" with a vase is a new step and not in the good direction. It's more a thing her sister would do. Being happy is her way to get revenge.

I've been laughing about the supposed fear of water, too - I wonder if they gave his character this preposterous back-story as an inside joke, or if the ultimate resolution of the trauma business will be one of his patented swimming scenes. It was hilarious how often he forgot to *act* traumatized while he was splashing and wading. I think he made a face once and then the rest of the time he was happy as a clam.

Somehow, these obligatory childhood traumas for (male) leads are hardly ever really believable - but that’s also the fun part. (A smile trauma? 🤣 A human contact allergy (with those symptoms)? 🙄) So, it would make sense they used an inside joke to set this up perfectly!

Am I the only one that screamed during their intimate moment in episode 6? The sheer chemistry between the 2 leads is the bedrock of this drama. This is what I have been looking for all year. While Destined with You came the closest, it still missed the mark as the FL did not match Rowoon’s energy.
Aside from the romance which is taking my breath away, the cast as a whole is doing a great job. A lot of minor characters tend to grate on my nerves but not here. Even the exchanges with the half sister are enjoyable because the FL rises to the occasion. The I’ll enjoy my married life with my love while you continue to live that pretend social media life has to be the k drama burn of this year!

I am in no way, shape, or form as enthralled or delighted as other folks watching this haha.
I continue to not be able to define this show aside from fast paced. So many times during these episodes I was "like did we get here?!". One such moment was they finally did the deed. One minute there's tears and next they can barely get undressed fast enough.
Yura showed up for the wedding picture, wearing white, posts it social media, and NO ONE calls her out on it? The big "oneupmanship" is the bride saying "you have your online life but I have the real thing" fast forward to Yura now with the big brother. What. Even?!

You guys!!!!! Du- Guk is the greenest of green flags! He is forest green, kelly green, dark green, light green, mint green, chartreuse green...all the greens!
It's how that man can be so tender and considerate yet smouldering sexy at the same time. The sweetest moments were when he was struck speechless upon seeing her in her wedding dress, him tending to her after her breakdown, his confession of love to her on the beach and the empathy and pain in his eyes when he hears her reveal her family heartache.
But when he is naughty he is oh so wicked and I love it. He has this smile that he does when he knows he is being bad and I am weak for it. Like when he teases her about wanting a preview of his body before he takes a shower. I even burst out laughing when he covered up his chest and had the audacity to accuse her of wanting to pounce him. I dunno how Yi- Joo has any defences against him at all!
She knows her walls are crumbling down any way. It struck me when she apologises for not reciprocating his feelings that she says "I can't love you" and then backtracks to say "I shouldn't love you." To me that says it's too late, she already does (her drawings are another indicator) but she's denying herself and him by suppressing it. Perfectly understandable though given her trauma.
But now they've crossed the line and I am excited to see her be more open about her love for him in the episodes to come.
My other fav moments:
"I can't hold back any more" Enough said🦋🦋🦋
They've both time travelled 😍
Du-Guk's Mummy giving Yi-Joo those big hugs at the wedding and family dinner💖
Halmeoni insisting that she be called Halmeoni 🥹
I actually like Yoo-Ra showing up to family dinner on Jung-wok's arm. Game. Set. Match. According to one of the other Beanies, the makjang is makjanging and I am here for it.🤣

Do Gook was super swoony this week. He was very patient in waiting for her to open up to him about what has been bothering her. And of course their skinship was hot.
Yi Joo made the right decision of partnering with him in her quest for revenge. Its about time this two level up their relarionship. Make them all jealous to your perfect marriage!
Yeon Hwa is my favorite chaebol mom/MIL atm. I can't wait for her to face off with the evil stepmom. Its bound to happen later.
I can't believe the Hanwool family stick treated Yi Joo so horribly when they found òut she is the true daughter. It must've grated on Jung Hye that she chose her to adopt. Karma!
I hope Yi Joo's father will be saved in time. Jung Hye is planning to poison him so she can gain all the money of the family.

But at least we now know she is the actual bio daughter and Yu Ra isn’t.

The first series I saw him in was Faith (also called "The Good Doctor"). I didn't love it, but I remember thinking that the best part about it was Sung Hoon's character. Although, admittedly he didn't talk much, so it didn't take much acting. But he stole every scene he was in with his presence and unusual costuming, omg.
The other series I saw him in was I Picked Up a Star on the Road with Kim Ga Eun (also called "I Picked Up a Celebrity on the Street"). It was intended to be a black comedy, but I found the story and the acting to be uneven.
Both of those shows are on Viki.
My Secret Romance is the series he may be the most known for. I think that's also on Viki.
This is the third series I've seen him in, and as someone said earlier, he's bringing his A game to this one!

The only other show I've seen him in is My Secret Romance and I would get so confused when the FL lead looked so startled at times when he kissed her. How ? WHY? Look at him...how could you have a problem??!!!
I am so glad that now k-dramas are turning the page on that practice of FLs being surprised and restrained during romantic, intimate scenes. It used to send me beserk.

I didn't mind in My Secret Romance because it was a part of character, with the hipcups.
It's more frustrating when the FL are described as strong and independant but suddenly become super shy.

Man, how many more twists do they have under their sleeve for them to stack twist upon twist in these last two episodes? All my previous bets are confirmed except for the cooking mom being Yi Joo's mom, so here are my new bets:
1. Do Gook's mom is going to return. I think I heard, his parents got divorced?! So, she isn't dead?
2. Evil mom was friends with cooking mom before she schemed and married Yi Joo's dad.
3. Yi Joo's ex's family are going to find out Yu Ra slept with their son and going to be a nightmare to Yu Ra or the evil mom
4. Yu Ra's real dad will show up sometime to help Yi Joo in her plans.

As I remember it, Do Gook's mom is the current wife and Junk Wook's mom was the first wife. Hence Jung Wook is the Hyung (older brother).

Cooking lady had a fire scar on her arm. I don’t think we can rule out her being the OG mom. A fire accident probably made people think that both mom and daughter died (yup, it can happen in dramas, we don’t need bodies) or muscle man secretary lied to evil mom about the death.

I am absolutely loving this show (it’s my first makjang!), and am finding myself counting down the minutes during the weekend until a new episode comes out.
That said, as sweet as this episode was, I seem to be only person who didn't love the way the show handled *that* scene... wondering if anyone else feels the same way??
What I was most put off by was Do-guk basically ignoring Yi-joo when they were making out and she said “I can’t breathe”. Everybody seems to find the whole thing hot but I can’t understand why he’d basically dismiss/ignore her wishes by saying “I can’t hold back anymore” and then grabbing her wrists to move them out of the way. The wrist grabs are getting too much and it bothers me how he can’t just hold her hand properly!
Anyway, I felt like he should have let her have a moment of hesitation (completely understandable given her emotional state and how fast they were moving) and let HER resume the kissing, or at least indicate she was ready to keep going. That would have been so much more romantic imo - instead it came across like he only cared about his wants. I get that he’s overcome with emotion and has probably been in love with her for years, but you can’t just ignore your girl like that!! What happened to his patience/attentiveness? Was there something lost in translation, perhaps?
And yes, I get that the wrist grab was necessary to get that shot of both of their wrists, but there are so many other ways they could have gotten there. It’s not like they were having a mutual (!) sexy, need you now, pushing on walls type makeout session, they were supposed to be having a deep, emotional, loving makeout sesh.
Rant over … all said, I did squeal at the date reveal. It makes total sense looking back - how he recognised her, told her how long he’s loved her, the car accident drawing, and even just the way he so willingly agreed to the marriage.
I also have a small hunch about the brother, though I could be totally wrong… what if his leg actually works now (maybe he recovered over time), and he’s been faking it in recent years?? Not too clear about the intricacies of nerve damage, but I wouldn't put it past him to lie about it...

I think the "I can't breathe" was her asking him to slow down, not stop. She was the one who took the initiative to unbutton his shirt, so he knew she was completely into it. And she was kissing him back quite enthusiastically even with her hands pinned back. If she hadn't been into it, he would have stopped.

Yeah. She was overwhelmed and needed a moment. She caught her breathe when they took a short break. And she liked it when he continued. She was totally into it.
Oh yeah. Brother is totally capable of manipulating everyone by lying about his leg.

That's totally a fair read, and clearly what most people are seeing 😂 I did like that she took initiative, I guess I just wish there was a longer pause/ a bit more acknowledgement there to let her think and avoid the possibility of her feeling any sort of ambivalence, esp since people can make impulsive decisions when they're in an emotional state. Though, in the context of impulsive decisions, this is a good one to make lol

I guess in a situation like that consent is not always verbal, it is conveyed physically too. She didn't give the impression physically that she didn't want him. She just wanted a moment to catch her breath.

I got the impression in the 1st episode that DoGuk had been in love with YiJoo well prior to the car accident that sent them both to hospital / back in time. First, he calls the family photo of 'happiness' "fake", including the implication that SeHyeok's love for YiJoo was "fake"; he then takes YiJoo's side in her definition of 'love'; and then says something (through a bit of clenched teeth and a lingering glare at SeoHyeok) to the effect of 'any man should be envious of the love a woman shows for her own man by portraying her own man so handsomely in the portrait'; and finally, YiJoo's bumping in to DoGuk in the hallway later where at the end of the discussion, he realizes he's a bit irritated with YiJoo's naiveté, he's too emotionally--invested in YiJoo, and he leaves quickly feeling like he may have revealed too much of himself.

I really like your take on the beginning of the show.
I also love the writing of PMR because the more that is revealed in subsequent episodes, the more it makes you want to go back to the beginning to find all the nuances you missed before!
I feel like I will complete the whole season and then binge watch it again to rediscover how layered the dialogue and acting were.

I'm totally with you on the “I can’t breathe” part. I had to stop a moment and decide if I wanted to keep watching this. It is not okay. I don't care who started what or if it was hot. If the girl says stop, you stop. And wait for her to decide. You don't impose your needs. It's absurd to still see such stuff happen in dramas. Very diappointed.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but this might just be the most concise, well-written drama of 2023. Take that, "serious" dramas. Using the trappings of genre prestige to shove your shoddy writing down our throats has backfired spectacularly. To think that right around the end of the year, a low-budget, badly costumed (Sung Hoon's stylist deserves jail time) makjang from a barely-known, c-tier network has dethroned the esteemed programming from well-known names. Well, at least in the entertainment factor. Just look at how enthusiastic we all are about this! This is the kind of show to indulge in, to savour. A true gift for me after a truly awful year of epic proportions.
And I need Jung Yoo-min to become a goddamn superstar. She's drop dead gorgeous and talented?!? Where has she been all this time??

I agree.
I'm enjoying this so much more than a few of the bigger budget, big name actors shows from earlier this year that seemed like they would deliver and just failed.
Each to their own obviously of what people like and maybe it helps that I have zero expectations but this has been really good.

Time went by so fast while watching this set of episodes. This is how good it was and how invested I was in it. I can't wait for next week's messiness with Yu Ra and Do Gook hyung. Favorite scenes this week were the improvised honeymoon, especially when he told her how he can just be there for her, and when she finally opened up to him. That was an endearing moment. And what followed was hot 💥💥. The OTP has so much chemistry. I might rewatch those episodes while waiting for the weekend.

A few things: 1) I feel like the explanation of DoGuk's trauma / PTSD and JeongWook's animosity / leg issues was really lame, if you'll pardon the pun (explanation in manwa was better); 2) romantic / sexy times scenes with Hunk Swoon ... er, I mean Sung Hoon, need to come with a warning, like "AFTER WATCHING, DO NOT OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY!", or "NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE WITH SERIOUS HEART CONDITIONS"; 3) from the Ep 7 preview, I feel like we are going to get details on how / why, and since when DoGuk has been in love with Yi Joo; and finally, 4) ERMAHGAWD, Sung Hoon!! ... that is all.

I really enjoy this Kdrama for the most part, but recent episodes have the male lead exhibiting some possessive, controlling and aggressive behaviours - writers have a nasty habit of romanticising and perpetuating harmful/toxic/abusive behaviour. Eg. ML offers sanctity of his home, only to show up unannounced, enter without permission, then refuse to leave - no, let's not ignore that and focus on the brownie! ML invades privacy of FL, then follows her without her consent - no, ML, the FL didn't leave notepad in shared space, it was left in her private space. Nor did she ask for you to enter her private space and pencil shade your way to discovering her whereabouts. ML gaslights FL and refuses to sleep on floor. ML grabs wrist of FL, yanking her close/restricting her movement, while refusing to let go despite repeated requests. All these behaviours are romanticised, not addressed as harmful/toxic/abusive, and, worst of all, are followed up with grandiose gestures/rhetoric that result in romantic beach walks, passionate kisses and lovemaking. I recognise it's important to understand cultural differences, and after reading the recap and majority of comments I'm probably in the minority here, but harmful/toxic/abusive behaviour shouldn't be brushed aside as a matter of culture. Many Kdramas continue to teach young girls and women all over the world that such behaviour is romantic — in a country already rife with misogyny and patriarchy, in a country already known to have one of the highest rates of gender-based violence in the World, and in a country with the highest suicide rate in the OECD. Statistics for suicide amongst young girls and women are particularly staggering. Sigh.

I agree with the romaticized toxic male behavior. I can't STAND it when they grab the woman and pull her roughly. Unless you're doing a very dramatic twirl to save her from an oncoming truck, BE GENTLE DAMMIT. I was yelling at the screen during those scenes! And the thing where men think that saying NO NO NO is an invitation to change their mind!! Having been in situations where my NO was taken as a challenge and then things were done to me, it's especially traumatizing.

Yes, and it's only acceptable behaviour if it's the ML - second ML would be crucified by Netizens for identical behaviour. My first foray into Kdrama was Business Proposal, then hearing Netizens screaming "ML was greenest flag ever in a Kdrama". I was left wondering if we watched the same series. Don't get me wrong, he obviously wasn't all bad, but let's keep it real: ML chased FL like a psychopath through an office building, threatened her employment, forced her into a dating contract, threw her out of his car in the pouring rain without so much as an apology, and also told her to brace herself until her "no" became a "yes". There is nothing attractive about this toxic behaviour, but all of these actions combined apparently led FL to swoop in for a first kiss. Greenest flag ever? Nope! Thankfully, we've had a stream of genuine greenflag ML's in Kdramas of late - refreshing.
