You can only pick one: Sageuk

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one sageuk (historical drama)

quirkycase: My absolute favorite sageuk has to be Nokdu Flower. Beyond the high quality of the storytelling, acting, and production, it depicts a historical period that isn’t the usual focus for sageuks. I didn’t know anything about the Donghak Peasant Revolution before this drama, but it’s a moving piece of history that was fascinating to learn about. Unlike the usual 50+ episode count for sageuks, this one clocks in at 24 episodes, so it stays tight and well-paced. I sometimes find the palace politicking tiresome in sageuks, so I loved that Nokdu Flower is more social than political in nature. Think freedom fighting and social unrest as opposed to men in winged hats arguing. Be prepared to feel stirring emotions and to get that beautiful “Blue Bird” song stuck in your head for weeks.

mistyisles: I think this is the hardest You Can Only Pick One prompt yet! I can’t possibly name only one sageuk as my *favorite* over the others, so I guess I’ll just pick one to highlight that I haven’t written about recently: Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People. It’s an epic fairytale with a fabulous cast and a stirring OST, and I still catch myself thinking about some of its most powerful scenes at really random times, even years later! It also struck me as one of the only sageuks I’d seen at the time wherein the characters actually sing (and boy do they sing!). It does start off a little slow, but once the main story gets going the buildup and eventual payoff is so, so worth it.

solstices: There are a number of strong contenders, but the one that stands out the most to me would be Six Flying Dragons. From its stellar cast to its evocative soundtrack, this drama was polished from start to finish. I don’t think I can even begin to sum up the immense scale of the hope and tragedy that this show delivered; it was a deeply moving tale of humanity, loyalty, and a dream of a brighter future. Muyiyiya remains one of my favorite drama OSTs of all time — Byun Yo-han’s voice is as poignant as his acting — and Yoon Kyun-sang’s impassioned roar of “Warrior Moo-hyul!” will always bring a fond smile to my face. Plus, this drama was my introduction to the amazing Han Ye-ri — her layered portrayal and graceful sword fighting instantly turned me into a fan. I could sing a million praises about Six Flying Dragons and it still wouldn’t be enough.

Unit: Hands down, Empress Ki (which I think is Ha Ji-won’s finest work till date)! Whether as a “man” or as a maid, a consort and finally the empress, her journey wasn’t smooth. But if there’s one person who’ll use the stones that trip her feet to build a palace, it’s Empress Ki. And to oppose her at every turn, the drama gave us formidable villains in El Temur (and sons), the dowager, and Baek-an. Not these caricature kinda villains that now populate the sageuk space. I love almost everything about the drama from the plot to the palace politicking and scheming, to the OSTs and the costumes (the Goryeo era will always be superior to the Joseon era). My favorite character asides the empress was Tal Tal (I even shipped them at some point) and my least favorite was the spineless emperor. I only liked him because he was played by Ji Chang-wook. Heh. Btw, I’ve rewatched all 51 episodes of the drama three times. And each time, I relieve the pain of having spoiled the identity of the Eagle House boss for myself on my first watch. *Sob* I should probably add that it took me two weeks to move on when I first watched the drama.

Dramaddictally: At the risk of having pitchforks thrown at me, I’ll admit I don’t really like sageuk. Modern romance is more my thing, but there are a few historical dramas that have captured my heart and The King’s Affection sits at the top of that list. NGL, I went into this drama with my eyes on Rowoon and came out with them fixed on Park Eun-bin (which is probably true of everything I’ve ever seen her in because she always steals the show). Here, she portrays the prince with such complicated strength and beauty, it’s hard not to fall for her character — the same way Rowoon does, even when he thinks she’s a man. The thing I love most about this story of gender-role reversals is that we get a lead couple that seems highly modern in their egalitarianism. They’re equals when they sword-fight the villains, when they develop complex schemes, and when they confess their feelings. The heroine breaks the mold in this one — not only because she’s pretending to be a man — but because she’s dedicated to discovering her true self, no matter how long she’s forced to play the role of someone else.

alathe: Favorite sageuk? Well, I don’t know… there are so many to choose from, and — okay, no, I can’t even pretend. It’s Six Flying Dragons, folks. It was never not going to be Six Flying Dragons. Have I mentioned that I really love Six Flying Dragons??? From start to finish — and boy, that’s a long journey — it’s a show practically tailor-made for me. It has convoluted political scheming and fraught ideological debates! It has impeccably characterized anti-villains for whom I’ll cheer till the bitter end! It has swords! But, above all, it has nuance. Of all the sageuks I’ve loved, it’s one of the best I’ve seen at grappling with the sheer hugeness of history. It juggles an immense ensemble cast, all of whom are constantly at political odds with one another, and most of whom are so very easy to adore. This isn’t a show with easy answers. In fact, as you’d expect from a story all about the ruthless rise of King Taejong, it takes moral absolutes and bludgeons them to death atop a bridge at night. And, what’s more, it’s entirely justified in doing so. (As was Bang-won. I will not be taking questions.) I gave this series fifty hours of my life, plus a significant portion of my soul — and, if asked, I’d do it all over again.

the Goryeo era will always be superior to the Joseon era
Very true words @unit . I most certainly agree with you.

My one Saguek pick will be Queen Seondeok. One thing I like about sagueks is the political play that's playing out. The moves and all. It's in Queen Seondeok I first learnt about the horizontal and vertical division of the world(And I read up on it more). Watching Queen Seondeok was like taking a class on how to survive in a cutthroat world, how to not get absorbed in power trips. And teach me it did. Queen Seondeok was a flawless production for me, and I've seen similar productions come close to that or even match it. However, the lessons I took from it is a league of its own. Others have given me lessons, Queen Seondeok's stand out more prominent.

I'm team Six Flying Dragons, too!!! Everything @alathe and @solstices said plus:
-it follows a very interesting point in Korean history (the establishment of Joseon, in case anyone's curious)
-it manages to both tell a great story and an excellent character study of Lee Bang Won
-they say history is written by the winner, but it showed how history is just life happening to people and how we try to make the best decisions based on what we believe is right. And that there are no villains, just people with different ideologies and objectives.
-it explores gray areas beautifully and spotlights the characters' morality without judgement, therefore challenging the viewers'. I spent a lot of time trying to decide right or wrong in this show! It would make a great subject in an ethics class where the students could argue one side and then another for hours.

Intelligent, heartfelt, heart-rending -- excellent production all around. Aaaaaaaah this makes me want to rewatch, but I don't know if I have 50 hours to spend!

@dramaddictally, I’ll take the heat off you and have the pitchforks thrown at me instead. I did not enjoy SIX FLYING DRAGONS. Admittedly, it’s probably because at the time it aired, my Western centric brain knew practically nothing about Korean history and I was lost. But I do remember the high quality production, and another stellar performance by Yoo Ah In.
Since then, I have come to really enjoy the sageuks (and I’ve brushed up on Korean history) and there are so many good ones that makes this difficult.
I know I’m still not doing myself any favors here, but I’m going with MR QUEEN. I know, I know, it was not perfect, and it blended genres, but it captured my attention and my heart. I think because the palace politics and intrigue were tempered with humor. I find that helpful, no matter the genre. Of course it goes without saying that Shin Hye Sun’s performance was brilliant, and the chemistry between she and Kim Jung Hyun was off the charts.

Thanks to this exchange, I finally remembered the real reason I watched all 50 episodes. I have a cousin who LOVES Yoo Ah In. At the time SFD aired - 2015? - neither one of us knew anyone else who watched dramas. So, she made me watch SFD and Jang Ok-jung with her so she could have someone to talk to about them. My lack of knowledge and search for understanding was what led me to DB, so full circle!

5

Besides DB, I spent a lot of time in WIKI learning about the real characters and other historical matters.

4

I had to stop watching last 6 episodes or so as it was getting too depressing, I knew the history. Otherwise, enjoyable.

I agree with all the love for Six Flying Dragons. Tight storytelling, despite the 50 episodes, with so many scenes that have stayed with me years later. Yoo Ah-in was fantastic and Byun Yo-han's singing still gives me goosebumps. Excellence from beginning to end.

Ah me too, me too, @alathe. I was just thinking about SFD today so this came at a perfect time. (Then again, it's not a rare day for me to be thinking about SFD) :)

It's my choice too, though there are many I haven't gotten to yet! So appreciate all the picks here. God, I love a sageuk. Not sure I'd give an arm but I'd definitely give *something* for them to start making more of them in the realm of the epic ones listed here.

I know I’ll love Nokdu Flower, and in fact I already started it, however the subject matter makes it hella depressing to watch, still it has such a superb cast and will undoubtedly be a favourite once I actually finish it.

For now I have to say The Princess’ Man, I watched this a long time ago, before finding out the male lead actor is a horrible person. Tho I can’t deny it was a gripping watch from beginning to end.

The Tale of Nokdu
It wasn’t tonally consistent but gosh darn did I love the martial art fight scenes! Also a big shout out to actually having a complex villain! Which has become something of a rarity in kdramaland recently.

A great performance by Kang Tae-oh, funny his image has been that of a soft boy when his performance of Cha Yool-moo was a ruthless but very compelling villain. Who I must say was still very darkly charming and charismatic. Maybe that’s the problem kdramaland has been having recently? Are they too scared to make their villains complex because that could humanise them and making them appealing?

Cha Yool-moo is probably one of favourite villains of all time. Dong-Ju was never engaged and was always disinterested when it came to him. The drama not only showed the horrors of unrequited love/abuse from men who can’t seem to let go but show also didn’t put the onus or burden on her to change him. The fact his ‘love’ was never going to override his power hungry ambitions was the whole point and something a certain massive western franchise couldn’t understand and got completely wrong and instead romanticised *sigh*

The Tale of Nokdu is a fave of mine too (points to my username!) :) You're so right about the difference having a complex and interesting villain makes in shows like these and Kang Tae Oh NAILED it. And I agree recent kdramas (and fusion sageuks in particular) are realllly lacking that.

Not a sageuk but I always think about how this was a major issue in the hugely popular Alchemy of Souls—the villains were so cartoonish and unbelievable. And in the recent crop of sageuks (Joseon Attorney, Our Blooming Youth, etc.) the baddies have just been baddies...pretty blah.

I want some more villains I can love to hate, not hate to hate 😛

@nokdudu: You’re so right about the Alchemy of Souls. Not only the villains were conceived and written poorly but it looked like the actors were told to consistently overact and chew the scenery. It was ridiculous. But I still miss Mudeok. What a great job Jung Somin did in bringing her to life.

I think they could have had a compelling one in the shaman. Like at the end of part 1, we had her calling out the characters on their hypocrisy of bending the rules for themselves. But the show kept on shoving Jin Mu down our throats and then tried to sell us on the vain queen.

Great point!! I totally forgot about that honestly. Jin Mu was fun for a little while but impossible to take even slightly seriously. And the vain queen storyline was as shallow as a kids' pool—didn't like that at all 😓

For the first half of the drama, he really did seem like a second male lead in a rom-com who gets hilariously entangled with the male lead dressed as a widow, so it was extra surprising that he was a baddie. I guess some may have been suspicious of him since he was a historical figure with an unflattering reputation.

It's just harder to make villains complex, because then the heroes and the plot have to be complex too. Also, I think we're approaching an increasingly polarized world in terms of the positions we take on what is right and moral and acceptable. We're boiling people down to just a handle of things they've said or done.

MY TIME HAS COME.

As someone who's been watching kdrama's since a wee-babe... and grew up in a history-loving household... SAGEUK's were a must watch every week. One of my first k-dramas EVER was actually Taejo Wangun. ^^

my top faves:
1) Damo - a masterpiece in my book. the OST is still my favorite to this day. the only CD version OST I ever bought in my life too. LOL
the acting, the story, the directing, the cinematography (for its time) was just *chefs kiss*

2) DaeJangGeum - I still rewatch this once a year. Just for funsies. It's just such a classic and the food porn is top notch LOL

3) Tree With Deep Roots + Six Flying Dragons - I think this one is a no-brainer. But I absolutely love MooHyul in both versions <3

4) Jumong - I would religiously wait every Mon-Tues to watch this with my family. and yes we watched all 80+ episodes without skipping a SINGLE episode... #priorities LOL also, I never knew how invested I would be in the storyline with how to advance sword-making XD

Honorable Mentions:
Queen Seondok - Lady Misil is still hands down, the best villain ever. & Bidam was hot. LOL 'nuff said.

does... KINGDOM count? cuz it should :D
I could write a freaking essay just on that series LOL

You might be interested to know that there's a similar list to yours on the OST thread. It's almost always a guarantee that great sageuks will have an equally great OST.
"Kingdom" qualifies as a sageuk, it's not quite the typical sageuk that we're used to seeing.

The Princess’s Man, most definitely. I lived for this drama when it was airing, and it’s the only Kdrama I actually own on dvd. Yes, it had a lot of palace politics and talking hats sitting around plotting, but it did such a great job of making me invested in the outcome of the plotting and how it would impact the characters I cared about.

It left me with an appreciation for Moon Chae Won that still exists to this day, even though I honestly haven’t enjoyed many of her dramas since. I haven’t watched the drama in years, due to the ML ‘s disgrace, but it’s still the first Sageuk that came to mind for me.

So many great ones to choose from. I might think differently if I had been able to watch SIX FLYING DRAGONS but it just is not available.

So, among the many that I have watched one stands out for the sheer quality of its drama: KING OF TEARS: LEE BANG WON. This show is historical tragedy as Shakespeare would have written it if he were writing Kdramas (think HAMLET as an example of what I mean). To me this story of the founding of Joseon actually shows the reason why it was such a dead end as dynasties go- it was totally flawed from its very beginning. If other shows like THE RED SLEEVE CUFF show us anything it is that in Joseon everyone, up to and including the king himself, were like flies caught in the amber of Neo-Confucianism

QUEEN SEONDEOK is a great Pre-Goryeo drama that people should see - definitely another great one, as is Empress Ki (which is set in the final years of the Goryeo era- and with most of the story is actually in China).

I do hope that we will get more Goryeo and pre-Goryeo Sageuks (QUEEN SEONDEOK is set in Silla- she was one of three queens who actually ruled over that country- and her Astronomical Observatory still stands- the oldest observatory in all of Eastern Asia).

I don't know if I can just pick one, and there are so many I've still yet to see (Six Flying Dragons). When a Sageuk is good it somehow transcends all other dramas. I'm going cheat and go with two, Painter of the Wind and Return of Iljimae. Both older dramas yet both quite daring particularly in how they approach female roles and sexuality. The older dramas seem much more daring then the newer works. Both of these dramas when distilled are really about making/experiencing art which is why I think I am so partial to them. So many other great dramas have been mentioned including Chuno and Empress Ki. I'll add that Dong Yi has one of the most romantic scenes I have watched in all of dramaland. Just today I started a rewatch of Haechi because I was too tired to start a new drama---a very underwatched drama that has much depth. So many dramas to watch, so little time!!!

It hurts my heart to choose! But nothing can beat Six Flying Dragons. The moment the people lifted up Sambong and started to sing, I knew it would be a favorite. I was so moved, and it was such a powerful scene.

The actors did such a fantastic job, and every performance stood out. Every character was interesting >> Gil Tae Mi and Cheok Sa Gwang!!

And then the production! 50 episodes, more than twenty weeks of tuning in, and I never got bored. Every episode was well crafted. I think there was one episode in the middle that dragged, but that's all. Unbelievable quality!!

Runner Ups: Seven Day Queen! 100 Days My Prince. And among fusion, Mr Queen and Sungkyunkwan Scandal (though I can never rewatch it again).

I feel like AoS shouldn't count since it had zero ties to any real historical dynasty. It took place in a fictional country. Gu Family Book may be able to count if they've mentioned Joseon or Korea at least once.

This is a post that's giving me serious FOMO. My sageuk allergy (*ducks from all pitchforks*) has meant that I've hardly watched any, and enjoyed even less. I guess I will have to try some of these again.

That said, I must mention BLOODY HEART from 2022 (and was - surprisingly - my kdrama of the year), which I enjoyed from start to finish, for Kang Hanna and Hang Hyuk (will ignore Lee Joon because he shouldn't have been there).

I've watched a lot of sageuks and I don't generally like Chinese dramas but the 70 episode Chinese historical drama The Legend of Yanxi Palace and the 87 episode Ruyi's Royal life in the Palace are my favorites. Both tell the story of a different Empress married to the same Emperor, Qianlong. They are both on Viki and both share great acting, cinematography, attention to historical accuracy, and story telling. Yanxi Palace is more comedic, Ruyi's Royal life more touching. Give either a chance -- you won't regret a single episode.

I agree Ruyi's Royal life is an epic drama in the truest sense. The poor woman was subjected to so many things during her time in the palace and the emperor really betrayed her love for him once too often by listening to others when he should have listened and trusted her more. I think it was quite sweet in parts but also a sad tale.

I haven't watched that many sageuks tbh, so for me there's nothing more powerful than the "muyiya" scene in Six Flying Dragons. Just iconic.

But Rookie Historian, Rebel and Mr Queen (don't know if we can call it a sageuk tho), are also favorites.

PS. I wonder what's my mom favorite sageuk. She's always talking about Dae Jang Geum and Faith, so one of those most be it. 🤔

There is a beanie who plans their year’s watch list by sageuk release dates and I picture them with a league table with key points of interest; the era and accuracy, story telling etc. I don’t think they have commented yet and I don’t know if that’s because they are rocking in a chair somewhere because of the stress of choosing just one.

I dislike sageuks because I hate tension inducing scenes (aka what makes a drama a drama) and sageuks seem to be palace politics personified 90% of the air time. I also hate betrayal, attacking the weak and second female leads who can’t read the room and just walk away gracefully. So that leaves me with the much lighter sageuks Mr Queen because the humour outweighs all the things I hate and has the squad going on a mission to find the King, Love in the moonlight because Bogummy 😊 Rookie historian strong female, 100 days my prince childhood connection that works.

I like sageuk but I have kinda issue with the length from the classic ones aka the authentic ones. There are a lot of characters too. But I always loved the part with the kids, those children actors are really great. I think it's why I really like the faction or fusion ones, they're shorter. I would be happy to get an authentic sageuk with 25 episodes and not 50. I really liked Six Flying Dragons or Nokdu Flower.

In faction sageuk, I really liked My Country.

In fusion sageuk, there are many but I will choose The King's Affection.

First of all I have to say that I have only watched these sageuks, all of them in 2022:

_ Rookie Historian (the first one I watched).
_ Queen Seon Deok.
_ The Nokdu Flower.

And there are other dramas I watched which are not pure sageuks as Live Up to your name, Rooftop Prince, My only love song or Splash Splash Love.

Now I'm halfway of Six Flying Dragons, Saimdang and finishing Secret Romantic Guesthouse (on air).

So... I pick Queen Seon Deok. I watched this on YouTube, segmented in lots of parts (few minutes each part), with subtitles a little bit delayed... And however I loved it to pieces and I finished its 62 episodes in three-four weeks.

Good acting, wonderful music, clever script (I had to take notes of my favorite dialogues and speeches)... and Bidam (Kim Nam Gil), who made me laugh, and cry, and get desperate, and admire him, and get mad with him, and definitely swoon over him. One of my favorite male characters in dramaland. Maybe the number 1.

Runner Up: The Nokdu Flower. So so good!! Another masterpiece.

I loved the Kings Affection. So much so I watched it twice. It was my very first Kdrama and I’ve been a mad consumer ever since. I sometimes get tired of the palace politics and the portrayal of helpless females in these types of dramas. I love seeing the everyday day stuff. How they grew things, sold things, the family dynamics what sort of buildings they lived in. How intelligent women survived these times without being poisoned or dealing with difficult marriages, high mortality rates and creating relationships with men who they have limited interactions with before marriage.
I also enjoyed the following so much that I’ve also watched twice:
100 days My Prince
Bossam Steal the fate
Faith the great doctor
Love in the moonlight
The Crowned Clown
My Sassy Girl

If you are talking about traditional sageuks, or better, straight up sageuks, then without question Six Flying Dragons. It is just superior in terms of script in my opinion, as it deals with profound themes, namely politics and philosophy, in a very nuanced and intelligent way. Add to that production quality and acting.
Second to me is Nokdu Flower. I learned a lot about that period of Korean history, which is not often depicted.
I haven't yet seen Dae Jang Geum ( Jewel in the Palace), which is on Viki but not available in my region. I have a feeling it would be on the top 3.
There are others I like for the crack factor, but among those tbh, none of them really stand out in terms of consistency or higher level of quality.
An often overlooked sageuk I really enjoyed was The return of Iljimae. It had a consistent melancholic tone, quite particular in fact, and a fantastic score and cinematography. And my favourite Jung Il Woo role to date (but I haven't watched Bossam). That said, I haven't re-watched it in a long time, so not sure how it holds up now - it's from 2009. I don't think it's easily available unfortunately.
Another overlooked sageuk and a personal favourite is an old daily (!), The King's Daughter, Soo Baek Hyang (2013). Centering on Baekje kingdom, I just loved the journey of Seo Hyun Jin's main female character.
Lastly, I quite liked was My country; although I hated the love story I fell for the tragic bromance.
Now I suppose I need to see The Red Sleeve...

I watched Return of Iljimae around 2017/2018 and didn't find it dated at all. I think historical dramas benefit by not having modern technology and fashions that can give a dated feel. Some of the older historicals were filmed in a way that does look older----has the video feel. But, Return of Iljimae did not feel that way to me. It is a very modern story as well with very free-thinking independent female characters that live outside of traditional society and roles. Jung Il Woo was mesmerizing in it. There are some great character actors giving very quirky and interesting performances including the actor who plays number 1 in Squid Game. He plays a monk in this one. I think those quirky characters turn off some viewers, but I like quirky.

@isagc, thanks for the reminder that Yoon Shi-yoon has appeared in three sageuks. For the record:
1. JTBC’s SECRET HEALER (2016) (20 eps)
(available on VIKI US under the title MIRROR OF THE WITCH),
2. TV CHOSUN’s GRAND PRINCE (2018) (20 eps) ((Viki US), and
3. SBS’s NOKDU FLOWER (2019) (24 eps) (Viki US).
A few thoughts:
1. I have not seen No. 1 so now I have an incentive. SECRET HEALER (though fictional) also takes place in a specific historical time fame which is great for learning;

2. Re GRAND PRINCE: If you would like to view something pre-pandemic sweet, go to my fan wall and scroll down to the ninth post. You will see a video from May 9, 2018 of GP’s 3 leads: YSY, Jin Se-yeon and Joo Sang-wook after the final episode at a ‘hug session’ in downtown Seoul to fulfill a ratings pledge they had made. The three were good sports and looked great. I am assuming (with Covid etc.) there will never be another one;

3. The Yoon Shi-yoon one encounters in his sageuks is very different from what one usually expects from him, his vivacity for example is usually suppressed. In NOKDU FLOWER (imo) he was cast totally against type and gave a fantastic performance; and

4. Good luck on your quest to watch all his work. Have you finished his recent 50 episode weekender KBS’s IT’S BEAUTIFUL NOW? I didn’t attempt 50 episodes.

3

@bongsoon

I agree Yoon Shi Yoon was great in Nokdu Flower. I think he was nominated to some award for this role.

One thing I find interesting is that Yoon Shi Yoon's character in Mirror of the Witch (I'll watch it soon) is a famous medicine man from Joseon. Just as Kim Nam Gil in Live up to your name. So it's funny my favorite actors played this kind of characters. In fact, is Yoon Shi Yoon's character the same medicine man that Uhm Hyo Sub (Heo Jun) played in Live up to your name? I think he is.

About It's Beautiful Now I have only watched 13 episodes so far. I'll finish it but I think I will skip some parts because there is so much filler content...

Those were the days.
It would be great if MBC made again available.

5

Good times!!! Likewise Toki. I wouldn't trade those years and the sageuk/history club for anything. Come back when you have time. We are still here:).

I know Paka was having issues with her vision, and I was also worried during Covid, like @bbstl. I should have asked for a way to contact her. I just thought she'd always be here when we needed to talk to her.

JUMONG is still among my faves and worth the re-watch. I can't believe it's been 17 years.

4

For a long time it was 100 Days My Prince for me - it was the first sageuk I watched, and only my second kdrama ever. Plus, DO’s eyebrows. And I really haven’t watched that many of them over the course of my drama career so far, but I was so captured by Our Blooming Youth recently. I can’t even explain what it is about that show, but there was something so addictive about it. I loved that the FL stood up to the ML (even though he’s the crown prince) immediately, repeatedly, and they both drew out the best in each other. I loved the crown prince’s trust issues, and how they were slowly broken down by the steady people around him. I loved the refusal by the show and the characters to accept superstitious explanations for things (even if the actual explanations got shaky toward the end). I loved the emphasis that history is easy to rewrite in favor of powerful people and the attempts to correct that. I loved the ambiguity of all the villagers who had been lied to, led astray, and exploited in their desperation, and the difficult emotions and conversations the other characters had regarding them. And I loved the slow-burn (and forbidden) romance that was sweet and sad and aching. It was my first Park Hyungsik drama, but it won’t be my last.

For now I am going to take the easy way out and hang in to your coattails @kiara.

I have been traveling for over a week (in NYC) so I just returned home and am a bit beat and this post caught me by surprise. Maybe I will have some further thoughts later.
My kdrama time frame starts with 2016. For overall quality I don’t think 2019 can be beat. A great ‘vintage’ year for sageuks. The four that I watched that year were (imo) terrific: THE CROWNED CLOWN, HAECHI, NOKDU FLOWER and MY COUNTRY.

For the record I choose as my favorite sageuk: HAECHI (24 eps) (Viki US). It was Jung Il-woo’s first post military drama and my first JIW drama. I became a fan for life. It was a total package: writing, acting and directing. Side bar: Jung Moon-sung (recently playing nice guys) gave an incredible performance as the evil Prince Tan (nasty personified).

If I had to choose favorite sageuk episode(s) it may be in the same year episodes 7 and 8 of THE CROWNED CLOWN (16 eps) (Viki US). Yeo Jin-goo in those episodes (playing the cray king) gave the best performance I have seen him give (in the dramas I have seen him in). Outstanding performance. I am still in awe of it.
Apologies for rambling.

Thanks @kiara and @reply1988.

(@reply1988, compared to many here my sageuk knowledge is rather limited. A quick scan of my log tells me (not including films) I have watched 25-30 sageuks since 2016. The first time I saw anything sageuk ‘like’ was the Joseon (historical) scenes in THE LEGEND OF THE BLUE SEA (2016/17) (Viki US). Lee Min-ho looked great lol. Some sageuk aficionados would consider my first live watched saeuk a rather inauspicious introduction: HWARANG (2016/17) but I enjoyed it, was introduced to the Park brothers (Hyung-sik (hyung) and Seo-joon) and a bunch of other actors and decided that I liked the genre and carried on from there. Thanks for letting me go down memory lane.)

It's more sageuk fantasy epic, but Legend: Tae Wang Sa Sin Gi. It takes during the Goguryeo era. I haven't rewatched it, but it's one that had made the most impression on me. There hasn't been anything like it. I guess there probably shouldn't be anything like it because despite great ratings, the cost had put the PD into debt. Also the childhood section in that drama were played by Yoo Seung-ho (who was already impressive), Shim Eun kyung, and Park Eun-bin.

Rookie Historian also made a good impression on being not like other sageuks. It's serious, but chill at the same time. I would recommend this to folks who are tired of sageuks. Palace politics were refreshingly delivered.

I've also been very impressed by Hwang Jini. It was so enthrallingly beautiful and really centered on women and the gisaeng world. To be a gisaeng was really to become a master craftsman.

Six Flying Dragons has been on my list forever. I should really get to it!

Oooh, sageuks are what brought me to k-dramas in the first place so there are many I love, but the one show to rule them all is Six Flying Dragons. Others have already mentioned this, but what I loved was its refusal to be "easy". It never whitewashes the brutality of the history, but it also shows exactly why the characters make the choices that they do. It's one of the few works I've seen that dares to grapple honestly with both the benefits and costs of revolution, and it does it while juggling seven protagonists and a gazillion secondary characters. I could go on and on about the craft of the show - the way it slips in set ups that pay off hours down the line, the extraordinary ensemble cast, the music, the fight choregraphy - but it's ultimately its willingness to fully emotionally engage with both the hope and the horror of the characters and their choices that impressed me most. It also has some of the most amazing individual episodes I've ever seen (ep. 18, 25, 49 - and yes, I still remember the episode numbers 8 years later).

Sageuks got me hooked on K-dramas and movies - that's the main reason I love them so much! I actually watched "Jeong Do-jeon" before SFD, and even though I was skeptical at first since it was a more historical version of that era by Jung Hyun-min (Nokdu Flower), I ended up really enjoying it. I've also recommended The Great King Sejong to fans who wanted to continue with Taejong's story, and watching Tree of Deep Roots beforehand helped me connect with the non-historical parts of the plot. You've listed some great ones here! Damo stayed with me for weeks after I watched it, so did Conspiracy in the Court. I can still feel a hit to my heart today just remembering them.

Same for me. The ending of Damo is one of the best scenes in all kdramas. Just the wind and the poem...

ONLY ONE = A Jewel in the Palace also known as Dae Jang Geum.

It was very difficult to choose just one from my top favorites: The Red Sleeve Cuff, The Princess' Man, The Crowned Clown, Slave Hunters.

Sageuk LITE:
--Romance=100 Days My Prince, Tale of Nokdu, Love in the Moonlight, Moonlight Lovers , Sungkyunkwan Scandal
--Time-travel=Mr. Queen, Moon Lovers Scarlet Hear Ryeo, Queen In-Huyn's Man

Does it bother anyone else that the costumes for sagueks seem to come from the same wardrobe closet? Usually, the fashions and set are the same, no matter time which historical period the drama takes place, from Three Kingdoms -Silla (42-936BC), Goryeo (936-1338BC) to Joseon (1338-1896BC).

LOTS more on my list....thanks for the suggestions fellow Beanies!

They're not though. I don't know what dramas you're watching, but if a 3K or Goryeo Sageuk has the same hanbok as a Joseon Hanbok, something has gone terribly wrong in the costuming department lmao.
There are key differences in the different eras of Korean Hanboks and I have found them to be pretty well defined in style between them, for costuming at least, even if they're not always as accurate to true period dress. (I would say Joseon is most accurate, has the most written history and remaining artifacts to work with, and is the cheapest to acquire, then working backwards).
There are similarities, because fashion was heavily influenced by China, and historical shifts in fashion are often gradual rather than all at once, and it can blur for background characters for many reasons too, but they are there.

I am not sure what sageuks you have been watching that made you think this. Can you give me examples?

Sets are harder, due to like, what is available to shoot at, and also what is still standing, but also architecture styles didn't actually change drastically between the three major eras.
Bulguksa Temple and Anapji in what is now Gyeongju (then Seorabeol, Ancient Capital of Silla) are good examples of this.

My Country.

Just a all around great drama and a cast that made it all work.

This one’s pretty easy and it’s not even remotely close. For me, it’ll always be The Princess Man. Nothing before or since has ever made me feel the way that drama did. I lived and breathed that drama. It was so epic on so many levels and there were certain scenes I still remember every second of until today. Don’t even care that one of the lead is a crap person - I’m tempted to go ahead and rewatch it right now lol. The drama does such a brilliant job of making anyone believe that these characters were real.

JB and GF wrote a fantastic review for this drama. Not sure if it’s still here but everything they wrote about it was so spot on.

Adding yet another vote to the Six Flying Dragons brigade. It's stellar, 50-episodes of perfectly tailor-made television for me. I don't think I've seen another sageuk yet that's quite captured my attention quite like it. Just phenomenal.

Also yes, more non-Joseon sageuks!
