You can only pick one: Jang Nara drama

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one Jang Nara drama

missvictrix: While I automatically love Jang Nara as the cute and bubbly heroine, it’s Sell Your Haunted House that’s my favorite of her dramas. I’ve waxed poetic about this show before, but despite not loving ghost or occult-type stories, this one sold it all to me. And that’s because the world-building was so dang good! Jang Nara is our scarred, prickly, and motorcycle-boot wearing badass of a heroine… but she’s also hiding deep wounds. And so in the middle of the exorcisms and butt-kicking, it’s the rare moments of vulnerability that poke out in Jang Nara’s portrayal here that sold the whole thing for me a hundred times over.

mistyisles: Hmm I’m torn between I Remember You and School 2013 — or, at least, I was at first. But if I’m really honest, none of the reasons I’d pick I Remember You have much to do with Jang Nara specifically, despite the fact that I did like in her in that show. Her character and performance in School 2013, however, had nearly as much emotional impact on me as its iconic bromance did — and that’s saying something! She was a teacher learning alongside her students, making mistakes and trying her best to do better, struggling to reconcile her idealistic hopes with the reality of her and her students’ limitations, and just generally being an imperfect but warm and caring person who did a lot of growing and learning over the course of the show.

DaebakGrits: I’ve only watched a small sampling of Jang Nara’s filmography, so I’m going to pick one of her more recent dramas Sell Your Haunted House. I started watching this drama because of the ghostly premise, but I stuck around for Hong Ji-ah’s stoicism and angry spirit butt-kicking skills. I’m not normally into a gothic vibe, but Jang Nara really sold the character and the darker mood. In order to keep it from becoming too depressing, though, Jung Yong-hwa’s con-artist character Oh In-bum softened the story with some humor. The two were nice foils for each another, and I enjoyed their dynamic. Overall, not a drama that’s at the top of my recommendation list, but if I know anyway wanting to watch a story with ghosts, this would be one of the first I’d mention.

solstices: As much as I love School 2013 and I Remember You, I wanted to pick a drama where Jang Nara is front and center, so I’m going with Fated to Love You. Despite not being familiar with the original source material, I was utterly charmed by this gem of a drama that shone in its own right. As the meek but winsome heroine, Jang Nara imbued the character of Mi-young with such earnest sincerity that you couldn’t help but root for her, no matter how downtrodden she was. Though her romance with Gun (played with extra flair by Jang Hyuk) began in a whirlwind, their commitment was undergirded by their mutual kindness. And of course, the highlight of the show was its hilarious use of special effects — the rice cake-pounding animation! The CGI snails! So cute, and so good.

Unit: I’m picking Fated To Love You because aside from the Jang Nara × Jang Hyuk pairing — which is always a winner in my books — I really, really loved the OSTs, especially Ailee’s “Goodbye My Love.” That song brings me to tears almost every time!

I think I will pick ‘Go Back Couple’. There was something raw about her acting while missing her child or when she meets her mother again.
It tugs your heart. So that’s my a choice.

Definitely my choice too. Although she is not a favorite character of mine (she actually makes me extremely angry in this show), but if I am to choose a Jamg Nara drama it is definitely Go Back Couple.

I never saw this but may give it a try. The synopsis didn't make the narrative sound very appealing, but it'd be interesting to see her raw acting earlier in her career.

The best raw acting role she's done recently is VIP br far, which I highly recommend. It's a very deep drama, so I'd only recommend it if you want to watch something thought-provoking. I don't want to include any spoilers since some people hate them, but she really conveys a woman's loss of heart with such conviction that you can't help feel for her. This one was a real heart-wrenching one for me because of the culmination of a strong narrative, great cast acting brilliantly, and the whole package coming together to really draw the viewer into the emotional rawness and devastation thereof. Definitely not a feel-good or one to take on if you're in a down mood, unless you want to wallow in it.

I'm going to really go out on a limb and say The Last Empress. The show was so over-the-top it could have easily become a one-note parody of every makjang ever, but Jang Nara kept it grounded with her earnestness and emotion. Because she believed in this world, we could believe in it. The Last Empress was campy and fun and predictable and unpredictable, but because of Jang Nara it was also sweet and had heart.

She's a great actress, and this is a hard one for me because she's done so many good dramas. I had a hard time choosing between Happy Once Again and Baby-Faced Beauty. I'm going with the former because I thought her acting was better in the former, but I enjoyed the narrative of the latter more. I'm considering a rewatch of this drama in light of this post.

I like Happy Once Again a lot because the Jang Nara - Jung Kyung-Ho coupling is so swoony and winning. If without the annoying 2ML, this would be such a lovely piece.

(Sorry, Kwon Yul, I wish you never have to play those pathetic 2
ML again. You deserve to be the ML.)

I am a huge fan of Jang Nara. FATED TO LOVE YOU was that rare re-make that was better than the original- it remains my favorite among a great many Jang Nara shows which I have loved.

Go back couple is the only one of the dramas I have seen her in that stands out. Fated to love you, I could not get past the male leads laugh so although I stuck with it I had second lead syndrome big time. Oh my baby the second lead wound me up as he was playing a role normally in-line with the second female lead character and it was beyond irritating. So, my difficulty choosing a drama is based on the annoyance factor of the other characters rather than her acting skills or the story itself.

I've dropper IRY mid-way of Ep3 (yeah, I know, that's where it's supposed to start for real, but flashback story infuriated me so much I just couldn't proceed any further) and SYHH was not as exciting because of ML (I only like the Yonghwa when he sings, sorry), so FTLY for the win. She gave so much heart to her initially over-the-top tropey character, which is no small feat. Goth exorcist styling in SYHH was fantastic though. She really should do a vampire/gumiho drama with Lee Joon Gi, they'd look divine in total black together in one frame!

Her and Lee Yoo Young are the two actresses I wanted him to work with the most since like forever. It looks so perfect in my head that I'm genuinely baffled why no casting director ever had similar idea yet.

Lee Yoo-young!! Yes, that's perfect. Honestly, I just need her in all the things. She's such a chameleon of an actress with amazing versatility. Her and Lee Joon-gi would be amazing together.

I don't mean it in a negative, bashing manner at all, but these are the sort of pairings I'd much rather see LJG in than with the likes of Kim Ji-eun.

I love her eyes so much, they're magical in their beauty and expressiveness. There are quite a few male actors I can give such praise, but among ladies she's the first one that always comes to mind.

You mean the - if we can even call her that - FL in Again My Life? I'm convinced he could've achieve livelier overall result and certainly better chemistry if he co-starred with a mannequin there instead. If this counts as me being negative and bashing, so be it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2

@gikata: She does have incredibly expressive eyes! Even when she plays cold and silent women, you can always tell the depth of her emotions through them. It's beautiful to watch.

Lol yeah, she was the FL in Again My Life. I tried not to be too harsh just in case there was someone who liked her, but man she was just unrelentingly bad in that drama. And nearly everything else I've seen her in. I can't believe she keeps on getting extremely high profile lead roles alongside veteran male stars? It's mind-boggling.

3

@ladynightshade, not the first case like that for sure. Remember Jin Se Yeon? Girl's even got some huge awards (Daesang nomination ffs! I still can't believe it actually happened) aside of working with so many actors miles above her caliber - all while being completely unable to make even one facial expression that's not obviously forced. KJE's case is probably even worse though 'cause she can't make ANY expression whatsoever...

3

@gikata: Jin Se-yeon having a Daesang nomination is absolutely insane, what were the awarding committees on?!? I wasn't really a believer in the internet rumours that she comes from a loaded family that funded her career, but seeing the sorts of dramas she managed to get casted in despite her string of mediocre performances, not to mention the ridiculously high-calibre award appearances, does make me wonder if there's some truth to the chatter...

If that's the case, then it proves once again that nepotism is a hindrance on the industry.

Originally made a whole post, but messed up the formatting so I unfortunately had to delete it. My perfectionist brain refuses to let even tiny hiccups slide by.

So uhhhhh, the gist of it was that I refuse to adhere to the 'only pick one' rule of this game and will therefore be bending things to suit my own criteria: picking one drama per whatever arbitrary category I made up on the spot. Call it cheating, call it breaking the rules, I don't care I do what I want.

- Best Wardrobe: Sell Your Haunted House. I may not be head over heels for this drama like the rest of you fine folks, but that certainly doesn't stop me from obsessing with the fashion choices of the one and only Hong Ji-ah. Those tousled raven-black locks, those perfect classic red lips, those understated touches of gold jewellery, those all-black ensembles... masterful, brilliant, groundbreaking, stunning.

- Best cry session: Go Back Couple. Made me want to run to my mother and clutch on to her, ugly-sobbing. 'Nuff said.

- Best OTP: Fated to Love You. Honestly, this is less about the drama itself, which is still objectively perfect and I love every bit of it (except for some parts that I don't, but will steadfastly ignore to maintain the facade of this being the perfect comfort watch), but more about dramaland's best OTP - Jang Nara and Jang Hyuk. The have everything going for them - the acting skills, the crackling chemistry, the looks, the crackling chemistry, the screen presence... did I mention the crackling chemistry? But how can I be so confident of their superiority over all other iconic OTPs, you may ask? Well, just look at the quantitative evidence: this lovely, beloved pair will soon be reuniting for the fourth time to save the very fabric of dramala— I mean, star in a heartwarming romcom. Seriously, nobody does it like them.

- Best actual drama: I Remember You. Okay so, this one isn't so much just about Jang Nara, but the show overall; although I would say that Cha Ji-an is a pretty awesome female lead. Especially in the second half when the writer gets their shit together and finally starts to develop her character as a multifaceted, complex human being with real contributions to the plot beyond being a clumsy, somewhat cringe 2010s kdrama heroine. I'm serious, please watch this drama if you haven't, it's one of the best I've seen even to this day. The acting from every actor involved, leads and supporting, is stellar. Highly, highly recommended.

In conclusion, I cheated and I have no regrets. Stan Jang Nara!

That is a pretty hard one. Nara deals with any role she takes on in an impeccable way. I love her Hong Ji-ah in sell your haunted house the best. Being a powerful heroine suits her better. But her roles in school 2013, go back couple, oh my baby, fated to love you, or the last empress aren't any less. Can't wait for family drama to air.

Sell Your Haunted House was really good and the fact there was no romance didn't bother me.

I liked Oh My Baby. The theme was interesting and she had a great chemistry with Ko Ju. 12 episodes would have been a better choice.

In Oh My Baby, I was really rooting for her to pick Park Byung-Eun's character, even though I knew it wouldn't happen. I think I may have been picking up the same vibes as I did from the lovelorn oppa-puppy (is there such a thing?) he played in Because This Is My First Life. In that show, his car scene with Esom made me cry cathartic tears—and I'm generally not a cryer!

I want to say 'VIP' (2019) but, oddly, I actually recall very little of the drama. All a remember is I was very impressed with Jan Nara in it at the time. I just now went back and watched the old trailer. Again, I can't recall the details, only that Jang was riveting in it.

This made me think back to when I first saw her. It was 2008, in a C-drama called "Good Morning, Shanghai" on a U.S. cable channel called AZN, which is no more. I thought she was cute & perky -- didn't know then she was a Korean actress who'd spent some time acting in China. I think I'd pick V.I.P. as the one drama of hers even though her self-righteous wronged wife in that drove me crazy at times the way she dominated every conversation with the husband & then complained that he didn't talk to her.

The Jang Nara dramas I’ve watched to date are: Fated to Love You, I Remember You, Go Back Couple, The Last Empress, Sell Your Haunted House, and Oh My Baby. With the exception of OMB, I loved all of them, and I would be hard pressed to pick just one favorite... but Fated to Love You is the one I remember most vividly.

Looking at the above list, I’m struck by the quality of her work overall. Among all the shows I’ve watched, I couldn’t find another actor with such a high proportion of gems to duds—and there are still a number of JN’s well-received dramas I haven’t gotten to yet. Some of my other favorite actors have appeared in some really bad or mediocre shows (off the top of my head, I’m thinking of Seo In-Guk and So Ji-Sub, but there are others).

Maybe there are some stinkers on JN’s résumé that I haven’t seen yet, so it’s possible I’m giving her too much credit for her savvy choice of projects. I’d love to hear from other Beanies who have seen a greater sampling of her shows. How would you assess her overall body of work?

"Fated to Love You" was what led me down the k-drama path, so I choose Jang Nara's Mi-Young. That heartbreaking scene in the hospital made me do an ugly cry. Also, I wish I have Mi-Young's neighborhood oppa! :-D

I am always convinced by Jang Nara; I believe in the characters she plays & forget that it's acting. I will always give a show that she is in a try.
Of the recent Jang Hara shows that I watched, I especially enjoyed her in VIP. It was gripping, quite beautiful, & thought provoking.

For me it’s Fated to Love You hands down! I love her pairing with Jang Hyuk, great chemistry. This is one drama that I really empathized with the leads and truly fell in love with the couple. It’s not a perfect drama, disliked the noble idiocy. In general it was a compelling drama with a lot of heart.

Fated to Love Me was the second kdrama I watched and it caught me line and sinker. I skimmed it through as fast as I could and then watched sections over and over. It’s why I fell for kdramas. I have seldom felt so much while watching a tv show before or since.

That being said, as a person, I have outgrown identifying with the Cinderella trope, so my current self totally dug Sell Your Haunted House. Save yourself, with some help from friends, while making a difference, is what my older adult self wants and Jang Nara totally sold the role.

The two shows representing such emotional touchponts for myself over almost a decade has made me feel like Jang Nara has been growing up with me.

Voting for Fated to Love You...one of my very early dramas which is still on my top 10 list. The exquisite overarching view of a 'lifetime love' showed us that relationships are a graph of early jagged lines, straight paths leading to blissful peaks, which then plunge into deep dark valleys of pain and loss...followed by a halting upward recovery arc in which both leads find each other again after splitting into separate paths. Jang Nara's character in this was so frustrating at the beginning, but then watching her growth from being everyone's ping pong ball, to a confident artist and strong business woman was so satisfying. Even better was to witness the compassionate and courageous step she took back towards her past to look at love again. Jang Nara interpreted each step in that drama with agonizing but inspiring skill.

This is a very hard question because Jang Nara has developed such a wide range over her long career. Each drama represents the stage of her growth journey (and us too). She is so cute and spunky in the earlier dramas but becomes layered and disappearing into the role she plays in the more recent dramas. Her longevity is rare but a delight for me as a fan.

So, if I have to choose, the picks are Fated To Love You as my favorite and Go Back Couple as the best. At times when I want to ugly cry to release stress, these are my go-to.

Now, I’m just waiting impatiently for Family!!

Agree with beanies who mentioned Go Back Couple!!! It works for me coz of the relatability factor, luv for your mother & the chance for a do-over. The simplicity of JNR's acting during the bus ride, for those who've seen the show, they would definitely remember that scene as well, was lovely :)

JNR is a personal fave of mine. Her characters varied depending on what's asked for, she doesn't blow you out of the park, but she makes you feel the vulnerability of each of those ladies she has portrayed. She has slayed in comedy for the 1st half of One More Happy Ending (with another fave JKH!), mystery/detective in I Remember You & Sell Your Haunted House, dramedy Fated to Love You & a competent worker in VIP. I could name some more but that's the best of it. Sorry for cheating, heh!

Ah, Jang Nara. One of my go-to favorite actress in kdramaland.. This is a tough pick as I love all of the shows I've watched her in! Off the top of the list would most probably be Go Back Couple - since it also is in my top 10 most recommended dramas. Another favorite would be One More Happy Ending since it's the first I've watched of hers AND my other favorite, Jung Kyung Ho. Plus I love their love, though the lack of skinship still got me hungry for more. Well, at least it's not as lacking as Oh My Baby! Which I also actually love despite its flaws. Ah. And who can forget the hilarious insanity of The Last Empress? 😂
