Misty: Episodes 1-6 (Open Thread)

mary: We’re trying something new! (Or rather, reviving an old thing and making it new again!) We’re kicking off weekly Open Threads for shows that we absolutely want need to talk about and dissect with the Dramabeans community, but don’t have time to write complete recaps for.

odilettante: Or for shows where it’s too late to go back and pick up, yet deserve love and attention. While we wish we’d thought of this sooner (*cough*Just Between Lovers*cough*), we’re creating this space to squee, speculate, and generally discuss JTBC’s current Friday-Saturday drama, Misty.

mary: This first post is just to catch up with Episodes 1-6. Next week, we’ll post another Open Thread for Episodes 7-8, and the week after that is for Episodes 9-10, and so on until our angsty power couple reunites in the end or Go Hye-ran runs out of gorgeous pantsuits.

odilettante: GASP. Don’t even think about Hye-ran running out of pantsuits! It’s impossible! I’m pretty sure are three things Hye-ran cares most about: power, passion, and pantsuits. Not necessarily in that order.

mary: We may do this format for other currently airing shows too, depending on how much y’all like it. So let us know in the comments below what you think. Oh, and friendly reminder that the No Spoilers rule still applies here, so if you’re reading this after watching Episodes 7-8, please wait for the next Misty Open Thread to talk about it. Thanks!

odilettante: Now for a quick weecap of the past six episodes, addressing the highlights of what’s happened so far (while hoping that Hye-ran doesn’t question our journalistic integrity).

EPISODES 1-6 WEECAP

Misty is about a top news anchorwoman, GO HYE-RAN (Kim Nam-joo). She’s come from nothing, working hard all her life to win her coveted spot as the main nightly anchor on JBC News Nine. Now, the station keeps trying to fade her out in order to bring in a fresh, younger face, but Hye-ran skillfully takes down her opposition by proving she’s still the best — or at least the most craftily manipulative — and that no one should underestimate her.

Her next goal is to become the spokesperson for the Blue House, and it’ll take her husband’s political connections to make that happen, even though she’s currently estranged from him.

KANG TAE-WOOK (Ji Jin-hee) is the kind of perfect guy born with a silver spoon who has everything handed to him. The son of a Chief Justice, he graduated top in his class and easily got a job with the best prosecution team. But he is also a Man of Integrity, and eventually chooses to become a public defender, taking on impossible-to-win cases in order to help those who are unable to fight against the rich and powerful.

He and Hye-ran still try to keep up appearances as a couple, but at home, they barely speak and tensions are high ever since Hye-ran aborted her baby years ago, because it would conflict with her (then) budding career as news anchor.

As if that wouldn’t make their marriage rocky enough, added to the mix is KEVIN LEE (Go Joon), a famous golf pro who has returned to Korea. Hye-ran, desperate to prove to the network that she’s still the best anchorwoman, youth be damned, promises to snag an interview with the mysterious sports star.

Only she discovers that Kevin is really Lee Jae-young, her old boyfriend from years ago, back when she was young and passionately in love (so passionately that JTBC had to rate some episodes as 19, instead of their usual 15). He’s the man she dumped so she can marry Tae-wook and his political background. Another surprise: that man is now married to one of Hye-ran’s old high school acquaintances, SEO EUN-JOO (Jeon Hye-jin).

Kevin insists that the only journalist he wants to work with is Hye-ran, which means they end up working closely together. More closely than Hye-ran necessarily feels comfortable with. Cautious and cagey, Hye-ran knows Kevin is up to something, but despite her inner struggle, she’s firm that it’s just business between them.

She even sets up her younger rival, HAN JI-WON (Jin Ki-joo), to be caught in a scandal with him. Not that there’s any evidence that Hye-ran is involved — she knows Kevin’s a playboy and Ji-won is attracted to fame and power, so Hye-ran merely exploits their weaknesses for her own gain. The potential for a scandal causes Ji-won to be demoted, effectively removing all of Hye-ran’s problems.

That is, until Hye-ran’s caught in Kevin’s trap. He orchestrates an interview/trip to Thailand and barges in her room, pinning her down and trying to remind her of the chemistry they once shared. Hye-ran fights him off at first before kissing back in a moment of weakness, and unknown to her, Kevin’s lackey captures that moment on camera.

Kevin threatens to share those photos in retaliation for her ruining his image, thanks to her report on the corrupt corporation he’s modeling for. (Conveniently, it’s the same large corporation that Tae-wook is fighting against with one of his poor clients.) Hye-ran grudgingly agrees to meet Kevin. As they sit in Hye-ran’s car together, a heart-broken Tae-wook watches them from afar, realizing his wife lied to him about her involvement with Kevin.

That’s the same night that Kevin is found dead, his car run off the road. Around the same time, Hye-ran’s brooch — the one Tae-wook bought her to celebrate the pregnancy, but that she accepted as a congratulations on her new anchorwoman position — goes missing, only to be discovered in Kevin’s car.

It ties her to Kevin’s death, and DETECTIVE KANG (Ahn Nae-sang) believes that not only was Kevin’s death not an accident, but that Hye-ran was personally involved. Of course, that means her role as the News Nine anchorwoman is suddenly on shaky ground. No one wants a suspected murderer telling them the news.

Like a knight on a white horse, Tae-wook sweeps in to insist that Hye-ran is now his client, invoking her right to remain silent. But Hye-ran speaks for herself and is adamant that she didn’t kill Kevin.

Maybe she didn’t, because suddenly there are so many others on the scene who might have had reasons to get rid of Kevin. Such as his wife, Eun-joo, who despite her cheerful and naive appearance, is fully aware that her husband has been cheating on her ever since they got married.

Plus, Hye-ran met Eun-joo that night, showing her the photos that were taken when Kevin forcefully kissed her. Hye-ran warned Eun-joo that if the photos of Kevin’s sexual assault were leaked to the public, his career would not only be over, but both women would also be ruined. Perhaps Eun-joo, desperate to make sure her unborn child would have a good life, decided to get rid of the problem by getting rid of her husband.

Or perhaps a mysterious man just released from prison (with an equally mysterious connection to Hye-ran) killed Kevin for reasons that are yet unknown.

Or perhaps it was Tae-wook, wanting to protect his wife like he’s promised to do since he asked her to marry him. The list of suspects grows with each episode, but as we learn more about Kevin’s true nature, the real question isn’t “Who killed Kevin?” but rather “Who didn’t want to kill Kevin?”

The truth of what happened that night and the proof of Hye-ran’s innocence could be found on her car’s black box recording. Except it’s disappeared from her car, only to be found later by Eun-joo in her dead husband’s clothing.

But the black box video turns out to be even more damning as it shows Hye-ran and Kevin kissing — and perhaps doing something more, judging by Eun-joo’s reaction. Eun-joo meets with Hye-ran to tell her that she hopes to repay Hye-ran for all the kindness Hye-ran has shown her since her return to Korea. Eun-joo’s words may sound pleasant, but there’s an ominous tension when Tae-wook suddenly joins the two women.

mary: Look, I am here for Go Hye-ran. She’s a very flawed heroine, but she has set rules and principles for navigating the world and she sticks to them. She’s never lost by following her instincts so far. She just seems like someone who’ll always win, y’know? It’s the way she carries herself, like being accused of murder seems like a minor inconvenience.

odilettante: I’ve been ride-or-die for Hye-ran since the first episode. Maybe she didn’t kill Kevin, but if she told me to do it, I would have, without question. So I can’t blame Tae-wook, who knows that Hye-ran isn’t being completely truthful about her and Kevin, for being ready to face all comers to defend his wife’s name.

mary: Yup. I can totally see why Tae-wook stares at his un-filed divorce papers and sleeps in the office for years but chooses to stay and support her ambitions anyway. Even if her half-truths are killing his puppy eyes (and my heart).

odilettante: I also want to mention that, beyond the charisma of its leading actors, Misty has a gorgeous production value. The cinematographer and the lighting director both previously worked on Forest of Secrets, and you can totally tell since there’s a rich cinematic vibe to each scene. Finally, while we’re creating space to discuss this amazing show, I think we should take time to focus on the important questions. Such as, how many pantsuits does Hye-ran own?

[geolocator_show for=”SG”]

[/geolocator_show]

mary: Oooh is it question time? Because I want to ask if any beanies know why the show is called Misty.

odilettante: Is there actual meaning behind the title, or is it just one of those “because this English word sounds cool” drama titles? Then there’s the most important question of them all: when will we get another rated 19 episode? C’mon JTBC, you’ve raised our expectations — don’t disappoint us now!

Hye Ran is such a badass though she's created a lot of the problems she's currently facing. She's adamant about reporting the truth, but she's a master lies and half-truths in her personal life. I never know how much of what she's saying/doing is genuine and how much is manipulation. I don't always like her, but she's a fascinating character.

Tae Wook is an interesting character as well.

I can't wait for them to show more of Tae-wook as well. I think he'll play a larger part once the trial starts in earnest.

Also, being a rational Hye-ran fan, I totally agree that she created some of the problems she's facing right now. And I also couldn't tell if her emotions are genuine or not, or they ARE genuine but she uses them to manipulate people anyway. I probably won't be friends with her in real life, but as a character, she's fascinating.

Hye Ran's lies are 2nd nature to her and will be her doom, I feel. A loooot could have been resolved already between her and Tae-Wook if she would j u s t open up to him truthfully all ready !!!!!

and you know what? I was deeeply hurt by her "random" abortion announcement at dinner. I am pro-choice and for women being in control of their bodies etc... but to not even discuss the matter privately with your husband? to just toss it at him casually at a fancy restaurant? DAMN! I shed a tear for Tae-wook right there...

Yes I have no problem with her wanting an abortion. That's her choice. But to do it behind her husband's back was pretty inexcusable. Actually, no qualifiers needed - it was inexcusable. No wonder her husband hasn't forgiven her.

I'm really not sure what makes in inexcusable - it was obviously a choice he was going to make anyway. It does warrant some of his anger as opposed to, you know, her telling her beforehand that she was going to do it, but it was still her own body and choice. It's her own career and ambitions at stake, he doesn't really have a say in that.

I agree in spirit, but to be fair she made it crystal clear to him that her career is super important to her, and it felt like he had this idea he'd make her fall in love with him and want a more traditional marriage. So... in that aspect, well...

I feel like up until that moment when she chose abortion because she finally landed her dream career, they had a solid relationship. It was just the breaking point when they realized that maybe they weren't on the same page after all. He seems like the one who pulled away first, and Hye-ran refuses to be hurt by anyone so probably built a wall around her emotions because she has goals, dammit, and a broody husband is not going to derail her.

(But HOT DAMN they definitely to kiss more and mebbe try a lil' harder to make another baby, I'm just sayin'. JTBC, gimme my 19 rating again. *lustily weeps*)

[comment I just posted somewhere else but that I wanna share with you, @odilettante :-) ]

I was deeeply hurt by her "random" abortion announcement at dinner. I am pro-choice and for women being in control of their bodies etc... but to not even discuss the matter privately with your husband? to just toss it at him casually at a fancy restaurant? DAMN! I shed a tear for Tae-wook right there...

it's a bit unfair to dismiss Tae-Wook's feelings as "a broody husband" and toss him off as "meh, he pulled away 1st". Imagine if having a child had been his life-long dream? (even without his meddling family's pressure) How devastating it would be for an abortion to be so casually announced at dinner AND for her to end said announcement with "I'll take this brooch as a gift for my promotion" !!!!

naaaaaah! that just doesn't sit right with me at all...

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I don't blame him for pulling away, and Hye-ran should have definitely discussed it with him first. But I understand that the schism happened them as they both realized that their goals in life aren't going to be currently met with their expectations for the marriage. There's nothing that says Tae-wook pulled away first, that's just my interpretation based on the fact that he was deeply hurt by what she did, and probably threw himself into his own work to distract himself, and might have been a reason he decided to open up his own law firm instead of staying a hot-shot prosecutor (Hye-ran's been at Nine News for seven years, he's only had his law office for four).

That was definitely the breaking point for him, whereas Hye-ran was happy and confident that she was on track with her career goals that she's had for years.

So there's been at least 4-7 years of them drifting apart to the point where they barely speak, despite keeping up appearances, where Tae-wook sleeps in his office instead of the bedroom. There's a lack of communication there between the both of them, since I'm not sure Tae-wook ever made it clear to her what his hopes were for their marriage or how much it hurt him that she was definitely more focused on her career than wanting to raise a family with him. (He'd probably be a great stay-at-home dad, tbh.)

Maybe they could have tried to have another child once Hye-ran was well-situated in her anchor position and could claim maternity leave (not that I feel Hye-ran is intrinsically the type of person who would even want to take that amount of time off, anyway.)

It was the breaking point in their relationship, no doubt, which is why that brooch has so much more meaning than being tied to a potential murder. (Although I feel more like her accepting it as her promotion was a way of helping Tae-wook to save face and avoid the awkwardness of "well, I can't accept as a congratulations on being pregnant, but I can accept it for this, which is also very exciting and important to me!")

Again, the issue is communication. Hye-ran didn't communicate her plans to end the pregnancy, and Tae-wook didn't communicate the level of hurt he felt about it. So they've just been drifting in their own separate spaces for years, until now, when he's chosen to stand by her side and defend her against a murder accusation. Which is totally the angst-ridden stuff I'm here for.

What does it say about me that I don't care if Hye ran killed Kevin Lee or not?I'm just on her team, #TeamHyeranFortheWin LOL!! I have always had a thing for flawed heroines, I loved the evil Lady Mishil in Queen Seondeok. When I'm down, depressed, or having some issues my family knows QS is one of things to get me in gear. Yea, its that bad. I also love Annalise in 'How to get away with murder' even with how messed up she is, and she really is for me to say so myself.

Its just something about this flawed badass women with so much class and intelligence going to get what they think its really theirs that gets my admiration every time. And yes I know, my moral compass is pretty messed up.

I'm in love with Hye Ran's wardrobe ( a rarity in Korean dramas),like modeled after '30-'40's costumes worn-pantsuits especially- by leading ladies like Marlene Dietrich,Greta Garbo,Lauren Bacall etc.
The writer is IMHO, much too involved with the Hye Ran character and has neglected other characters like Kevin Lee,Han Ji Won and the director guy who is at cutthroats with HR. They are too shallow and two-dimensional cartoon characters without any depth.
I have a love&hate relationship with HR by the way.

YAY!!!!!
Right now, all i can say is: "The murderer better not be heroine, her hubby, deceived betrayed wife, or hottie assistant to heroine." Anybody else is fine. I wonder if it's heroine's childhood oppa working in cahoots with someone on the outside. I hope not. I hate when some innocent person is put in prison then ends up committing a crime when he is released. Like a doomed puppet of Fate. And i don't want pregnant wife to end up being the murderer because murderous cuckolded wives are rampant in kdrama also.

Or murderer could hero's dad working with someone else. Cause that ahjusshi is often up to no good in dramas. I totally feel as if heroine is guilty of the past crime young oppa (now parolee) was imprisoned for. Or maybe she had some problem with some big corporation who is behind all this. It'd be easy to make the murderer be some big corporate conspiracy so i'm hoping they don't go that route.

I was so glad to see my big ahjusshi crush playing the news chief. He always brings such gravitas to his roles.

Oooh I want a thread about News Chief too. At first it was annoying that he was going with Jiwon pitch for ratings. But when he grudgingly told Hye-ran that she IS the best and he regrets having to give her to the Blue House, I was like "Awww... mutual respect!" And then he put his career on the line to get her back on News Nine and I thought "This man is nice." But it turns out he's really just good at what he does (pushing the limits of broadcast), and he'd still drop Hye-ran if there's a sure threat.

I... I don't know how to feel about him now. I hate (love) that this show won't let us rest.

2) Thanks, Dramabeans, for (re)launching this thread. Honestly, I don't think you even have to do a light recap or a blurb -- unless you want to. I think a simple line like "Misty, Episodes 9-10: Discuss below" would be fine. Folks just need a dedicated space to gather (to chatter).

3) I'm behind on the Misty episodes, so I can't really contribute to the conversation right now. However, I am really impressed with the story and cast, esp. Kim Nam Too. I've never seen her act but she is a master.

Stupid Theory Time #2!

I know it’s completely absurd but I keep expecting Kevin Lee to pull a ‘Gone Girl’ on us.

I know it’s a stretch to assume that all the events that occurred so far were all part of his intricate revenge plan, but when I look back on all the ‘coincidences’ they all seem rather suspicious.

Firstly, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Kevin married Hye-ran’s childhood friend. His marriage to Eun-joo was purely to form a connection back to Hye-ran.

Secondly, I think he was always good at golfing but never had the passion to pursue it and/or lacked the funds to do so. The trigger of course was Hye-ran dumping him for his lack of ‘potential’. Thus forever traumatising him and setting in motion his intricate revenge plot whereby he becomes one of the world’s most successful pro golfers all so he can get his revenge on his ex for dumping him! (You know, something no one in the world experiences 😂)

I know y’all are cringing at how absurd I’m being but consider this, when he started screwing Hye-ran over, he had no motive or zeal to go back to golfing, golfing therefore had already fulfilled its purpose.

Thirdly, he deliberately avoided any interviews with the media and news outlets just so Hye-ran could get the scoop. I mean look at the timing, he came back to Korea only when he was the most sought out celebrity! Also I’m not buying that he ‘accidentally’ bumped into Hye-ran at the airport, the guy obviously planned it all, wheeling his luggage back and forth to coordinate the perfect surprise ‘reunion’.

Lastly, this is where Kevin started making mistakes, sleeping with Ji-won, obviously thinking it would make Hye-ran jealous and trying to undermine her self worth, but of course our Hye-ran knows how badass she is and prances on his idiocy, and then he sexually assaults her and takes pictures for blackmail purposes and then she so fucking brilliantly gives him the middle finger in her news broadcast. This obviously becomes too much for Kevin’s little brain to handle to the point where he fakes his own death à la Gone Girl and tries to frame Hye-ran as the murderer.

Well that’s what I thought for first four episodes anyways. Regardless episodes 5&6 throughly debunks this theory, but it was fun speculating while it lasted.

Especially considering the fact that Kevin was in a deadly car accident and yet his corpse looks surprisingly immaculate & undamaged but yanno drama logic I guess, you can’t refute the results of an autopsy bruh😔
Well only policemen can apparently... 😏

I'm not cringing. I agree. I don't think he is alive though, I think he made a fatal mistake. He miscalculated her love for her husband or her love for her work. Either works. However I agree with all your other points. I believe he was obsessed with her.

I don't think he's still alive, but i TOTALLY AGREE that his marriage to HR's childhood friend is SUPER SUSPICIOUS. Hey guys, thanks for bringing back this feature. It is the answer to the needs of us busy K-drama addicts.

The teasers of the dramas you show are more than enough so I know what dramas to watch out for BUT methinks your "blow-by-blow" recaps can be pretty tedious, but again, maybe it is just me. hehehe

What I actually look out for are your comments at the end of a recap.
Presenting WEECAPS is I think the best option. Glad you took it.

The OPEN THREAD is ideal because in the past I used to just skim through the veeeeerrrrry looooong recaps and head for your comments.... THEN I go on and read the comments of other beanies.

Having said that, MISTY is I think one of the best dramas that opened in late January and I am looking forward to seeing every single episode.

I am up to date watching it, so I won't say much now to avoid spoilers. I will be back for next week's "thread" and comment more extensively on Episodes 7 and 8.

Thanks much for reviving OPEN THREAD and the WEECAPS.

I haven't caught up to episode 6 yet but had to drop by and mention the music. The soundtrack of this is just lovely. I can't think of another drama that had such good music in recent years.

I'm also wondering why the series is called, "Misty"..so, Sounds like Mystery? Everything unclear, as in a misty environment? The characters' misty looks for/at another?
