Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (August 31, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Currently covering: Love Next Door

No Gain No Love: What a fun premiere! I love when dramas lean into the cheesiness with the onscreen graphics, sound effects, and imagined scenarios. Shin Mina’s tablecloth wedding gown + dry heaving when the bride and groom kissed was gold. Also, points for this drama having our leads already know each other and skipping the introductions. So rare for a romcom of this nature.

Love Next Door: I wasn’t thrilled by every turn we took this week, but I like our leading couple so much — and am so invested in their individual journeys — that I can overlook the parts I’m less excited about long enough to get back to the good stuff. I did catch myself tuning out a few times, though, only to be drawn back in by the next big satisfying emotional moment.

Live Watches
Mom’s Friend’s Son/Love Next Door: Bickering between our leads? Yes please. Bickering between our second leads? Hard pass. Still loving this though. I’m in a place where I’m identifying hard with the FL as she tries to figure out what she’s looking for in a career, and hoping they stay clever with the title/ending title switches.

Recent Dramas:
High School Return of a Gangster: (4 eps in) Well this is an absolute hoot! I love how absolutely terrible Deuk-pal is at pretending to be a high school student and how much he could not possibly care less if people find him different from before. I feel so awful for the real I-heon though - Sae-kyung explaining why the school violence committee is dead in the water was so heartbreaking. I can’t say I’m 100% sure of what is happening in his former gang, but I trust I’ll figure it out sooner or later. Meanwhile I’m having fun watching Yoon Chan-young strut around like he absolutely owns this school, terrible grades and all.

Older Dramas:
Happiness: (5 episodes in) I knew I was going to be more scared of the apartment people than the zombies and here we are. Scariest moment of ep 5 definitely goes to the phone filming in the supermarket - that lack of peripheral vision really freaks me out! I can’t decide if I want the crappy influencer son to die immediately or have a glorious redemption arc, but he better start on one of those paths soon!

Yoon Chan-young was clearly having so much fun playing gangster in High School Return of a Gangster - he was great at balancing the ahjussi + gangster vibe. I also liked Lee Seo-jin's special appearance - very different role for him.

This drama made me realize that Lee Seo-Jin has been miscast in the wrong roles and genre for much of his career. He shines as gangster. Imagine how good he would be in action thrillers. He has been wasted playing romantic leads in melodramas his whole life. What a shame for everyone involved. He should have been playing police officers or gangsters instead. Just my own opinion. I mean, imagine if Lee Seo-jin played the lead in Vincenzo! Imagine how glorious that would have been...

Yup I think his real-life personality and background have also tended to slot him into elite, educated, serious roles when he seems to have a flair for the comedic.

His first great role was as a gangster in Lovers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovers_(TV_series)
and he was incredible, unfortunately it's rare to see this role because it's not available anywhere online. But the passionate kissing scene in the last episode is unforgettable and the envy of many women. He ended up having a relationship with his costar who, at the time, was significantly more popular. They had a very public relationship for two years which was incredibly rare at the time because of Korean netcitizens ownership of celebraties. When it ended he never again had a public relationship. He was blamed by Netcitizens but only because he refused to comment when his lover/actress went onto a tv program months after the relationship had ended and tearfully related the breakup. He had to get body guards for this mother and left Korea for a time. She didn't lose a single pound - he on the other hand lost over half his body weight coming back to Korea emaciated and the thinnest he's ever been in his life. He has never criticized her - she on the other hand . . .

@jls943 I am happy that you also enjoy High School Return of a Gangster . You will also notice Deuk Pal is so kind towards I-hyeon's mom (so proud of him for being overprotective over her) and the friends he made during school, and how they changed in the end of the drama. It could be nice if we get to see him more as the gang leader that his gang loved so much (before getting switch) and what made him that way despite of being in a shady world.

The title/ending switches in MFS/LND caught me by pleasant surprise and I loved seeing them continue so I am hoping along with you.

Amen to Happiness. The influencer son is scary in how much the world revolves around him to the point that a pandemic is just a source of fame.

Currently Watching
No Gain No Love ⚖️ 💍 The opening week was a hoot!!! I love the ML and the FL, and it's a delight to see Shin Min-ah again. I also love Kim Young-dae so far... it's an odd pairing, but it works!!

Romance in the House: 🏠❤️ WHOA PLOT TWIST!! Still on the fence about dad. Mom and daughter are the best and deserve only the best. Minho is lovely, his romance with the FL is ADORABLE, and they make my heart flutter. My friend caught up with this and we're having fun speculating about dad's fortune.

Love Next Door: 🙍‍♀️🙍‍♂️ I think I'm done. My favorite characters were the paramedic best friend and the journalist. I did like the vulnerable moment between the leads in the pool at the end of ep. 3, but I wish they spent more time (quietly) talking with each other, instead of loudly sniping, being mean to each other, and getting into physical altercations (that it NOT the basis for a healthy relationship). My friend is in it for the paramedic and journalist... But I think I'm out. Maybe I'll revisit it once it's done airing.

Miscellaneous:
●56% done with Welcome to Samdalri Love it. This is my kind of healing drama. (Friend loved it, too).
●38% done with The Producers aww the ML! He makes so many mistakes, poor lamb 😂
●43% done with A Good Day to Be A Dog it's so weird, and so dark, and so cute! I love Park Gyu-young in this!! I even love CEW in it! 👍
●PSA: The OST for The Starry Love, my favorite xianxia, is FINALLY on Spotify in a fan-made playlist!! I'm obsesssssssed with it!!!
In other news... Mom watched Modern Farmer and wasn't too impressed; now she's watching Serendipity's Embrace and is also not impressed. We both find the FL pretty chilly in romance.

Finished
Like Flowers in Sand: A beautiful masterpiece and my new #1 favorite drama. Everyone so completely disappeared into their roles, including the supporting roles of residents, that it felt like watching life unfold as real people went about their lives in a real town where ssireum is the lifeblood. The cast is fantastic, as is the group of friends who connect (and reconnect) as adults...

...The sea itself is also an ever-present character, with waves creating a wash of background sound in many scenes, echoed by the rustling of leaves further inland. The cinematography is gorgeous, creating a sense of expansiveness and space - you can sense how the coastline, scenery, and town stretches out past the frame, and that life is happening even where the camera doesn't have time to show us. The child actors were so good, and so in sync with their adult counterparts, that they look and FEEL like the younger versions of our grownup leads, giving us insight into their adult choices through their young eyes. Jang Dong-yeon's performance was magnificent. He became his character, right down to his walk, mannerisms, and gaze. Baek-du is not completely naive, but his complete sincerity and genuineness made him seem that way to others. His lack of guile sometimes gives him clear insight to see through people, but can also keep him from recognizing guile in others. Watching his character, sportsmanship, and skill shine through his ssireum matches was a joy, as was seeing him realize that it is not selfish for him to use his skill to seize wins from his opponents. In a drama full of moments I loved, one of my favorite things was that from the very moment Baek-du saw and recognized Du-sik, even as she protested her identity, she unconsciously dropped her Seoul accent and slipped back into satoori to argue with Baek-du. His ability to see through her facade brought back the Du-sik he had known. In many ways, this was a drama about (late) blooming and renewal: renewing your strength to follow your dreams, renewing the bonds of friendship, the tentative beginning of a new romance, and renewing trust by getting to the root of an old tragedy. And what a lovely, lovely ending - one of the most triumphantly perfect final episodes I've ever seen. I cried happy tears. I LOVE THIS DRAMA!!! Highly recommend!!!

My favourite is him being SO happy on sportsday, feeling it is really a teambuilding experience that everyone enjoys, and completely missing the other voices of that day, and the agenda of most of the participant. ❤️ And I love that they let a grown woman say she doesn't care for sportsday. LOVE NEXT DOOR (Ep 3-4) More background from high school with no unexpected reveals. Apparently the SUV of Doom only causes loss of dreams and not life. The show remains an average rom-com. I think the secondary characters and support cast (including the now tempered mom’s group) are carrying a lot of the show as I am just not invested in the leads or their current lives. Mo-Eum’s encounter with a version of her younger self, park girl Ji-Yoo, was great.

THE FROG (Ep 1-4) Inspired by the Korean saying "A carelessly thrown stone can kill a frog," the newest Netflix Korea series unfolds the stories of "frogs," or ordinary individuals, who are suddenly faced with terrible misfortune. It takes a while to realize that the show is edited by weaving two parallel 20-year old time lines into one story. The tension is real, the pacing has been described as “a slow burn” and the pauses bring home the gravity of their situations. The location shoots are a breath of fresh air. The show is a good example of the merger of film cinematography with k-drama formatted storytelling even though Yeong-Ha’s inter-spliced hallucinations can miss a story beat. Go Min-Si is a very good femme fatale as Seong-A.

At the halfway point, there have been a few bloody, horrific scenes and some disturbing images but I think most of it is psychological thriller. I think I know how the parallel story lines will merge if the writer based this off a US news story.

No gain no love: I think I am one of the few who didn’t particularly care this. I was kind of bored to be honest. I am going to give it the 4 episodes count and continue or give up after that.

Queen Woo: I haven’t the faintest how accurate this drama is, probably only vaguely. However, the acting is solid and the storyline isn’t too bad. I won’t say I loved it, but it was watchable. So I will finish it out. For those who haven’t seen it, it would probably be rated R in theaters, but if you have seen anything on HBO or Starz, this is about the same, not even as bad as I have seen there. Also, still not as graphic as the show The Boyz.

Black Out: So, it is actually looking like Jung Woo didn’t do it. It seems based off Sun Oh’s painting, 4 people killed Bo Young. I believe Da Eun was killed later by the creepy doctor. I thing Jung Woo was just a casualty of coincidence. I don’t think the murders are connected at all. As for the four who killed Bo Young, I don’t think the cop was there, but I do think the nurse was there. The plot thickens, I am really enjoying the whodunit aspect of this drama. Also, all the freaking secrets coming out, smh.

Good Partner: Man, karmic punishment. The writer went all the way in this last episode. Poor Jae Hee. My heart utterly broke for her confronting her dad, and that was a hell of a punishment for both him and Sa Ra. Also, Ji Sang still kept lying to Jae Hee, smh, sir say Sa Ra had a miscarriage and that you messed up. Emotional. I liked the case of the episode too, I wish she had been able to get a divorce, but I hope that man treat Soon Rye like the Queen she is.

Romance in the House: We are in the back half. Although both Na Eun and Min Ho are average at best actors, they are totally charming me in this drama. I am enjoying their burgeoning relationship. I am also glad that Moo Jin is understanding that he needs to be a better father just as much as a better partner.

Love Next Door: So now that Seung Hyo realizes his crush has not disappeared, what will he do? Probably nothing, Lol. I wonder when Seok Ryu will realize? Here we go.

Remember when we were moaning the lack of dramas? Almost too much of a good thing with the drama overload now 😅.

ONGOING
Good Partner - Yu-na living up to her talent here but this is definitely Jang Na-ra's show. I liked the apology vs compensation debate.

Black Out - I was so frustrated with all the villagers this week. As for the mystery, right now I'm assuming 2 separate sets of killer(s).

Romance in the House - The resolution to the story with the hairdresser was actually quite moving. The ending was kinda hilarious.

Mom's Friend's Son - The Greip scenes were illogical and unnecessary but everything else - the pool scene, the bickering, the K-superstition..🥰

Your Honor - The body count for this show is off the charts. I don't know how many more massacres I can take. I guess we were all right about the Judge's wife's death.

Perfect Family - I like how the show is making us doubt everyone, including Sun-hui, esp. with scenes where you're not sure if they are memories, imagination, or reality.

STARTED
No Gain, No Love - How quirky and charming and FUNNY was this! The side characters were entertaining too. I'm SO in.

C-DRAMAS
Way behind broadcast schedule with Are You the One (up to Ep. 14) but loving it so far. Zhang Wan Yi is so wonderfully expressive.

Go East - Watched 2 episodes and it reminds me a bit of Judge Di - a motley crew coming together to form a team and triumph. Will continue.

Melody of Golden Age - Also 2 episodes in with this. Nothing particularly new in the story - bold FL vs cold ML, contract marriage, palace intrigue, etc. - but it's engaging enough to continue.

Love Andante (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D / D- / D-
Did they really plagiarise that ending from Crash Landing on You? To be fair, a fictional show would never show an unification arc given the reality. But of course we had that weird wild boar arc, and a classic kiss by the supporting couple?

Black Out (Episode 3-4) - Mood: C
Interesting: it seems like we were misled into thinking that Go Joon was the outsider character when the true one’s Kim Bo Ra but still, the new detective in town is still poking everything in sight despite his biases. The plot remains underwhelming as an affair, politics, harassment, obsession and guilt come into play but the characters keep it interesting.

Love Next Door (Episode 3-4) - Mood: C-
Ok, so there was a Truck of Doom in the past, the ML has had feelings for the FL for the longest time ever, the reporter had taken photos of the OTP in the past without their consent and there’s that whole Greip storyline which I think was designed in order to get the OTP into some compromising position for the cliffhanger. I’m still waiting for something interesting, y’all?

Romance in the House (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D+
We’re at the halfway mark and pretty much nothing has been revealed about the dad’s actual past as the show drags it on with the Thailand arc. I was hoping that the 2ML’s dad was an atypical CEO but the writer simply lifted from makjang book.

Good Partner (Episode 8-9) - Mood: D+
It took us half the show to finally see the male leads actually work even though they’re both lawyers but of course there’s a teaser of the next makjang arc with Woo Jin’s birth secret, foreshadowed by the procedural. Hopefully the divorce is soon?

DNA Lover (Episode 3-4) - Mood: D
Two weeks in and the show really only has one shtick up its sleeve: having its characters trying to out-crazy one another. It is kinda lame to see multiple family traumas influencing the OTP’s personalities, also, the DNA pseudoscience is just crazy.

Bad Memory Eraser (Episode 7-8) - Mood: D-
They really went there with making the little bro the villain, huh? But it’s not the glaring police incompetence that grinds my gears this week, it’s the fact that the FL’s supposedly falling in love with the ML. Really, Show? To the point of noble idiocy?

Queen Woo (1-4): Really liked these first 4 episodes. The first 2 episodes were a bit on the slower side, but I feel like the stakes really started to rise in episode 3. To say the third son is messed up is an understatement. Also, the flashbacks really make the story of the King & Queen pretty tragic, because I think they did very much care for each other (it's especially obvious from the King's side), but them actually becoming King & Queen didn't do their relationship any good (though he obviously still cared for her in the present). Can't help but wonder what could've happened if they didn't end up on the throne, and how Woo might've actually realized her dream. Anyway, really looking forward to the next 4 episodes, where we'll hopefully see the Queen accomplish her goals. I'm certainly rooting for her.

Good Partner (9-10): Honestly, aside from those last 30 seconds, episode 10 could've perfectly served as a satisfying albeit open ended closing chapter. The show suddenly got very determinded to wrap up all of the main storylines in episode 10, so I'm very curious to see what's gonna happen in the remaining 6 episodes.

Perfect Family (5-6): Funny how the parents become less suspicious while everybody else gets more suspicious. They're still creepy though.

No Gain No Love (1-2): Can the ML just be a normal guy, please? As in, please don't be secretly rich or come from a rich family. Also, please no childhood connection. I know these things are very likely to happen, but I just don't want them to happen.

Love Next Door (3-4): I really need this show to turn things around because it's losing me fast.

Be Melodramatic (1-5): Interestingly, the first 15 minutes really didn't grab me, but everything after that? Oh, yes, I love it. This show is hilarious, but it also has a lot of heart. I love these friends, and the people around them, and I really just want the best for all of them. Did I say I love this show already?

Come and Hug Me (27-28): Can the dad stop hammering people? It's stressing me out.

ARE YOU THE ONE/HIDDEN CHARM (13) —Still intelligent and still shinny and wonderful, but I think I am enjoying it a lot because I recently watched STORY OF MINGLAN, which gives me perspective for the time period. This drama is more period realistic in the portrayal of gender politics, and the way both the main leads think about gender roles is certainly not contemporary. I would not consider this a so-called “idol drama”, and this may turn off some watchers.

That said, the writing is fantastic particularly of the female characters. I cannot wait until our dear heroine takes control of her life fully and chooses forgiveness or revenge or both. Either way I am following her and hoping the ML redeems himself for the choices he made—-the initial practical reason has changed to more personal and more selfish reason.

HAPPINESS( 5)—Loving this community watch! It has been a stressful workweek and watching our pair taking down zombies and the crazies in the apartment has been relaxing. The slow build is delicious, both in the main story and romance. Still one of the best CP out there.

LOVE NEXT DOOR (2)—I am always first in line for a good bickering couple with attraction lying right under the surface, but I was surprised that the themes drew me in even more. Such as the exploration of wanting to be loved through our weaknesses, the societal expectation of perfection particularly in South Korea and parental expectations, pride vs. honesty, and the fact that child-parent relationships never end really. And then the tensions within the families and friendships that point to old wounds left festering. Let’s just say this hits me in just the right place to be entertaining and reflective.

GO EAST (9)— I knew Tan Jianci could act, but I didn’t realize his range. He is anchoring this drama for me right now and I can’t get enough of his expressions or his willingness to go there for the character. Heroic he is definitely not. 🤣

Pretty unusual premise following the bureaucratic organization responsible for being the liaison between the kingdom and foreign nationals and visitors. I get the sense that the scope will widen into inter politics too pretty soon.

I really enjoy Love Next Door's non-romance themes and I think it's a good idea that they put time into those things (even though the Greip scenes were awkwardly executed) since bickering romances cannot sustain a 16-episoder.

I agree that Are You the One isn't your typical idol drama. For once, they've made a male lead who is flawed enough that the audience could be turned off. And not in that fake "oh he's so arrogant" flaw that audiences love. Usually, idol dramas make the male lead the competent, calm one and the female lead is the more reckless, animated one. We have a bit of a personality reversal. And I love how while the FL plays the dutiful wife, she also carves out a space to show off her intelligence and bravery within her role as wife.

My Mom's Friend's Son
I admit I expected more from the writing. The scenes leading to some major events are too simplistic and I often have to employ my suspension of disbelief (like overhearing colleagues across the corridor, cartoonish gaslighting boss... and did we really have to have a CoD on a cross walk?? 🙄🤦‍♀️). I'm even losing interest in Paramedic Friend and Reporter (and his Alien Searching Daughter) what is a shame.
What still keeps me in is Seokryu and Seunghyo and their dynamic... and how they can (and sometimes can't 😄) read each other. I liked when Seokryu was getting Seunghyo from his deep low point after his accident. And that pool scene was great (even if I was constantly thinking that the actors must be getting terribly cold 😆).
I also liked the two dads talking together... and actually even the two moms together in the car. I hope that will become more focus of the story.

No Gain, No Love
I have not been entertained this much for a long time by a first episode!! 😄
Shin Mina shining, Kim Youngdae being (beautifully) sarcastic and then they brought the Chaebol Family with (always) fantastic Lee Ilhwa ruling them all!! 😄😂
But you know when they really got me? With that Kim Hae Sook cameo. 😪❤️

I watched it shortly after No Gain, No Love and that was probably a mistake, such a stark difference. I forced myself to continue only because... Yoon Park was in it.
I tried to tune in and I finished the episode, but I'm not sure I will continue. There is an interesting topic of whether the leads' relationship can work long-term given they come from different socio-economic classes. The rest, however, didn't convince me (including the acting) and the last scene on the stairs only reminded me how much better this was done in Freaking Cinderella.

No Gain No Love I really liked Shin Min-ah's scenes but didn't really care for Kim Young-dae's ones without her.

Cinderella at 2AM I like the idea of the plot but this kind of drama rests a lot on the actors and they're not the best...

Romance in the House I'm behind. No character makes me excited to watch it.

Black Out It looks like everybody got a fixed black out.

Good Partner I liked the last client, let this poor woman being her own person and not the slave of her family!

Love Next Door It's a rom-com mixed with a healing drama. The focus is really on the characters' growth.

Queen Woo My first time I liked JCW's character in a sageuk!

Where do you go to pick up an item you need right now? The convenience store. What if you quickly need to get married to advance your career? Where do you find a bridegroom? The convenience store, of course. Thus commences NO GAIN, NO LOVE with all the trappings of a proper screwball comedy- including the satire, irony, parody and sardonic dialogue which are actually necessary elements to that long-neglected art form. We saw that in DREAMING OF A FREAKING FAIRY TALE and now we have it in this new comedy. I hope that the show can keep it up. Even more, I hope that this is a trend.

Did I mention that part of the deal that our FL has made in NO GAIN, NO LOVE involves agreeing to take in and care for a feline named Baby? Ring any bells? (hint: the original Baby was just a tad bit larger)

CINDERELLA AT 2 AM has started well with a trope busting premise that might also become another generally funny romcom.

DNA LOVER has very interesting characters which actually make it a better show than you might have expected. This too is a romcom that understands that comedy is supposed to be part of the show.

For something closer to a standard romcom we have LOVE NEXT DOOR. Friends to lovers is always a good story, maybe because it actually makes emotional sense.

My wife has really loved the currently airing Chinese Costume drama ARE YOU THE ONE? When Episodes ran out, she re-watched the Pre-Joseon Sageuk THE GREAT DOCTOR this time around as a binge watch- it was still really good. In any case she is staying current with ARE YOU THE ONE? Which is a really good show. But what to watch until the next episode becomes available? Try MELODY OF GOLDEN AGE where we have essentially a ‘temporary’ contract marriage of reluctant partners- who both like to solve mysteries and bring evildoers to justice. Will their shared interests bring them together? (OK we know the answer, but the fun is in getting there).

Our weekender has definitely entered its final story arcs. More makjang to come. I am hanging in there just to see how this all wraps up.

GOOD PARTNER has gotten even better.

Yes I am. If you are too then here is how to work it:

Hit play for an episode of your video.

Move your cursor across the picture as it plays- icons appear in the upper right corner. You will see a volume icon, an 'options' icon and, to the left of the options icon a squarish icon which actually says "subtitles and audio" - this is what you click to get the menus, one for subtitles and one for 'audio' by which they actually mean the language that you will be hearing. The show is being dubbed into English, Portuguese, 2 kinds of Spanish, German, Japanese, and one language whose writing I do not recognize. Each language is listed in its own writing system. That means you will have to select the language option which is actually shown in Hangul.

2

You actually won't see the words 'Subtitles and Audio' until you actually hover your cursor over the squarish icon that I mentioned.

I forgot to mention that you can also listen to the show in French and Italian if you so desire.

LIVE WATCHES:

1. LOVE NEXT DOOR - The romance is finally taking the lead and the bickering between the ML and FL is ADORABLE!

2. ROMANCE IN THE HOUSE - I am still watching for Mi-Rae and Tae-Pyong's awkward yet warm-hearted romance and the flashes of well-timed comedy.

3. ARE YOU SURE? - I'm still mightily amused by the youngest three members of BTS on their Jeju Island holiday. And boy oh boy can Jung Kook EAT! All the hollow legs right there!

OTHER WATCHES:

1. KAOS - I'm about halfway through this modern reimagining of the Greek gods is quite entertaining. The script is sharp and the social critique is handled well. I'm saving the other half for next weekend.

2. WITCH IN COURT - I keep seeing this pop up when people ask for recommendations for feminist K-dramas that tackle the issue of violence against women. I'm on to episode 2. Not bad so far though I'm not too impressed with Writer-nim making false rape accusation by a woman a plot point in episode two because in reality, those are very much in the minority and only serves to make it even harder for rape victims to come forward without being victim-blamed and disbelieved.

OTHER NOTES:

I have a whole bunch of K-dramas I've watched and paused halfway and at some point, I will go back to them at some point. There's absolutely nothing wrong with any of them but I'm finding that these days with the limited amount of time I have outside work, it really depends on my mood.

Love Next Door - When Seung-hyo said he expected Seok-ryu of all people to understand when they had that discussion about privilege, I thought they were referring to the privilege Seok-ryu enjoyed that Seung-hyo didn't - present parents in his life. I feel that was a better contrast to the privilege Seok-ryu said he had that enabled him to want to do the swimming pool project instead of the housing home. I'll minus the ethical violation and bias against some class of people so as to be able to weigh both on an objective lens.

The accident that cost him his swimming career could have been a secondary comment, hence land a stronger impact without it (the privilege) being an entirely emotional attachment issue.

Happy Saturday and last summer day, Beanies! I'd really love to have more time for dramas this week, but alas...

ARRANGED MARRIAGE PROCEDURAL CHANG LE QU/MELODY OF GOLDEN AGE: All hail Viki for giving the show not only proper subtitles, but also a proper title! I've had careful expectations for the show, and them were bot met and not – for starters, it IS watchable (with Viki subs – don't even try Mango version, do not repeat my mistake) and even somewhat fun, but... could've been better easily? Let me explain.

Leads – all of them – are dubbed, apparently due to rush to get TV airing spot, which is a crime against humanity because DYX's manly voice would've certainly add a lot of rizz to his character. Second, plot is a bit too silly sometimes when it shouldn't be – I mean, I get FL's reluctance to see her long term crush marrying her own sister, but surely she's old enough to understand that one cannot simply walk away from imperial marriage edict citing “I don't love the bride” as a reason? That was just dumb of her, writers, you've done poor girl dirty! The trope of childhood sweethearts (but he has amnesia or something and as result falls for her all over again) doesn't bother me much, but it's kinda disappointing that FL's feelings for her eventual husband only lasted like 2-3 encounters with his grownup (admittedly far from nice, tho he has his reasons) personality and now she doesn't fancy him anymore – just when I thought it'll be more original than usual “he falls first AND harder”... Pity. Plus cases and political web are a bit wonky. But!

It's a fun show. Leads have chemistry – both actors and characters. Comedy is not stellar, but decently funny – FL's family, esp mom, are a riot. Costume designer of AJTL fame (couldn't find further info, but I'm sure drama also got the same fight choreographer – and wind machine lol) does a good job at making everyone look good, even if the difference in budgets and not enough fit men to fill those nice armors here is glaring. Angst part is still ahead, can't comment on that yet, but I trust DYX to deliver it when time comes – he's doing decently so far, even if his natural mischievous charm is still visible under Cold Broody Period Hero demeanor. FL, despite being very young, is holding her own, tho I wish her role was written more WISE as opposed to “drama smart”. I do like that everyone is super scheming – ML may be not winning “perfect hubby” award anytime soon, but he PRETENDS to be one as if his life depends on it because it does - and so far it's hard to tell who's gonna be the big bad. Not the most brilliant palace intrigue, but I've seen worse. Oh, and music is nice!

HBO MEETS CHUNGMURO QUEEN WOO: Wow, so graphic! Just like good old k-movies that made unpleasant in-your-face erotica into an art form. I'd prefer a bit more plot-relevant smut, but at least acting delivers – except FL, who is still stiff, graceless and displays zero spunk she had as a teen. Reminds me of another queen sageuk which I had to drop after lively tomboy FL grew up into morose actress... Btw, teen actors were so cute! Wish we had more than 3 seconds of them and their once happy marriage. Boys are killing it tho – both literally and figuratively. It's great to have a King who's not a pushover for once, even if joy didn't last long. JCW should do more sageuks (while working on his speech/commanding voice which was uneven). Pace is lacking, visuals boringly grim, everyone sucks (that's historically accurate at least). Didn't expect her to try marry evil bro first, now that's a twist! Can't believe they've done poor King dirty by offing him so unheroically...

HAPPINESS (community REwatch): Ep3 (namely its ending) is where I properly fell for this story, its OTP and FL. See, giving your characters vulnerable, emotional moments DOES advance the characterization instead of ruining it! We're witnessing the start of leads famous family teamwork and it's glorious. I still think Yihyun should've listen and beat the maritricidal doctor up for greater good – remember, guys, wife is RARELY wrong! To this day I cannot understand how HHJ and PHS were able to portray this “we've been a team for years” vibe so convincingly, that's some great acting right here.

“Drama news” segment :

- Makjang Of The Week award goes to THE PRISONER OF BEAUTY and its FL. Sit tight, it's gonna be a wild ride! So, the events unfolded like: first the rumor she was found guilty and just when I was going for a strong drink to mourn the project with, her agency issued a statement that she was actually 100% cleared. Then the person behind first rumor kept insisting and also accused her of bribing her way into college, which was also swiftly refuted as “investigated and cleared”. Now that account is banned and her company stated they're going to sue the hell out of accuser, with additional rumors circulating about it all being smear campaign by her former company/mom's ex (wait, what?!). Everyone awaits what's next – get your popcorn because this mess is juicier than any script! And that's how c-web went absolutely rabid with hope to see her shows out of dungeon now – demand is still 100% there, let's wish it indeed reaches the finish line soon. #freewilly2024

https://x.com/LYNThailandFC/status/1829548186597544143

- to further amuse us, new rumor about LYN doing Ming dynasty drama with Yang Zi. This is most likely fake or at least wrong about dates, because alleged schedules don't match, plus Ming fashion for men is utterly tragic he's gonna look like a scarecrow!, but otherwise it's an interesting pairing - I recall he expressed enthusiasm to work with her previously. He also fits her main criteria for ML – none of his body parts are smaller/slimmer than hers))) Plot seems nothing wow tho – yet another period businesswoman saga *yawns*

- ADWAD is almost done – 1 of 2 crews has already wrapped. Getting ready to say goodbye to our crazy “romcom” royal couple, their funny sidekicks and giant horsey (who is apparently a girl, which explains infatuation with her rider, heh). But nearing end doesn't mean plot calms down – this scene particularly got me on the floor))) Working hard to serve the kinky crowd, I see. Mind you – this is the same guy who used to scoff at the idea of him doing a mere kabedon because he's "too cute and sweet for that”... Acting career REALLY broads one's horizons))) That's me asking Tencent NICELY to open their shelves

It's more outrageously makjang than actual makjangs, oh my! I only saw her in THE TRUTH S1 myself, and she was quite bland there aside of serving looks (but I do get why producers saw her and Yuning together in one frame there and went "this is it!"), but people more knowledgeable say she's a really promising actress and it would be a loss if she was cancelled. Hope we'll be able to form a proper opinion on her once TPOB airs, don't care which Monday or any other day of the week it will be, just make it happen, dramagods!

QUEEN WOO—I've only seen the pilot episode, so I'll try to finish it sometime this weekend. I'm having more fun reading about the different interpretations of this era's "vague" history.
Storywise, I'd say they tried to follow what was written on both China's and Korea's sides. They have several Chinese props since the Han dynasty was one of China's golden eras with tech and inventions. (yay for toilet paper).
"..everyone sucks (that's historically accurate, at least).." Haha
I guess I haven't gotten to the NC 19+ stuff. We had been warned since it was first announced. TVING is not like our regular cable Tvn and jTBC. It's the equivalent of a movie channel.

I'd love to see Wookie in more sageuks. He was much better in this one than the last two sageuks he was in.

POB has so much drama outside the drama, but I'm still looking forward to it.

That's one good point of pre-Joseon sageuks - not everything is documented in excruciating details, so it's probably easier to get away with creative liberties taken too far. Was surprised by lower-than-expected budget too - that palace hall looked really small and claustrophobic, hardly an upgrade from army camp tent)))

I actually liked his acting in EMPRESS KI - granted, it was not really a tall order since I did NOT like other 2 leads performances, and that's to put it mildly, but I still think he was good there. Wonder why he stayed away from the genre for so long I know quite a few actors who should've done that instead.

TPOB has gotten so much buzz for all the wrong reasons at this point that Tencent should really just drop it, no need for any extra marketing or warnings.

The same thing happens in Woo?

No, I didn't meant TKA, which was a show so silly with its basic premise - princess with PEB's looks pretending to be a man while surrounded by Rowoon-sized guys to make it even more hard to buy - that I couldn't even care for things like acting there)))

In QUEEN WOO we have a FL, titular queen, who walks like she was in cavalry since birth, slouches more than average office worker after all nighter in front of monitor and has a wide range of 3 facial expressions total - scowl, tearful scowl and awkward smile. Interestingly, there are Beanies who, unlike yours truly, greatly enjoyed her portrayal, smartly edited to make it look like she's actually doing cool action scenes screen presence and Badass Aura, so mileage may vary. Give it a try and see for yourself.

I'm through ep 9 with Melody of Golden Age and am having a blast! It's cheesy and the writing/ editing is quite odd at times, but I really enjoy the characters of the leads and the CHEMISTRY is working for sure (as is ML's unhinged crazy eyes and snark). Formulaic but fun 👍

When I balance the pros and cons of Love Next Door … 🥁 jun-jun-jun 🥁 … I’m still here for the Jungs!

I’m loving the onslaught of rom-coms. And Cinderella at 2AM might become my low-stress watch after work. Just don’t become too low stress and put me to sleep, OK?

After many a years in dramaland, I’ve realized I can predict nothing. Despite liking Shin Min-a since she was a cheeky gumhio and finding Kim Young-dae rather charismatic (tho not particularly skilled), No Gain No Love wasn’t on my radar. Yet I really enjoyed the premiere episodes. While it’s too early, fighting!

Of course, I am human (or a candy?) so I hoped Queen Woo would have been a good watch. But it’s not available in my region. Boo-woo. Still, I just read background notes from @kiara. Fabulous. Thank you for tagging me. I never would have found that otherwise.

Hi beanies! I hope you are having a nice start of September.

What I am watching:

_ K-drama Cinderella at 2.am. I didn't like the first two episodes, I found them quite boring and the script didn't grab my attention. But I'll watch episodes 3 and 4, maybe it gets better.

_ K-drama Goryeo-Khitan War (7 out of 32). I know it got mixed reviews here, but I'm really enjoying it so far. I missed this kind of epic sageuks.

_ C-drama Are you the one?/Hidden Charm (31 out of 40). This show has all my heart and I don't want it to end. I love the main characters, especially the male lead (Zhang Wanyi, pleased to meet you 🤩), but she is great too. The secondary couples are not annoying (in fact they are quite charming too) and even though this drama had a very slow start, I never got bored watching it.
Episode 31 was pure Jane Austen style. This year the butterflies in my tummy are all from China.

I'm slowly watching the Japanese gourmet series Wakako Zake (2015), and the Chinese masterpiece The story of Minglan (29 out of 73).

The Frog: 6.0 (ep 3 / 4) Meh.

Bad Memory Eraser: 6.5 Meh.

Romance in the House: 6.5 Meh.

DNA Lover: 4.0 Meh. Likely drop after day 3.

Cinderella at 2 AM: 6.0 (ep 1 only) Meh. How many times can one person trip in a single episode?

No Gain No Love 7.5 Surprisingly non-horrid considering how tired of Shin Min-ah I got from Cha-cha-cha and Tomorrow With You. Meanwhile, supporting cast includes Ok-hui from Behind Your Touch, plus the lead from Cheer Up, who seems to have different ways of cheering up here.

Love Next Door: 6.6 Meh. (ep 3 only)

Queen Woo 7.0 Well, I understand the age restrictions. Forget PG-13, try PG-31. But it would have been nice to turn the lights on so we could see more of the stuff we're not supposed to see.

Good Partner 🥰 ep 8-9 Random comments about the show: Divorce is really messy. Jae Hui is mature beyond her years. Ji Sang is really a dirtbag and I hope he ends up alone. Choi Sara is just a piece of work. I feel bad for Jung Woo Jin, he has a shitty father. Eun Kyung needs a hug. Yu Ri is very lucky to have such competent sunbaes to teach her the ropes. I dont mind Eun Ho as much. There were just so many complicated feelings in these episodes. I think I feel the most for the father who want to keep the relationship with the son he raised.

Perfect Family 🌞 ep3-4 there is more to the story that what happened in the past and the present timeline fire. There is another family mystery that Seon Hui need to investigate. I honestly do not want to think that her parents are bad. There must be more to the story even. Su Yeon went missing but I just do not understand her actions prior to her disappearance. She is the most suspicious person for me.

Love Next Door ep 3 First few minutes of ep3 and I recall similar theme on other dramas. Not a good sign. I read the recaps so I skipped watching this two episodes (ep3 &4)

Joy of Life S2 😊ep11-15 The fight between Fan Xian and Cheng Ze is heating up. They are both doing their best to investigate and rally support against the other camp. Of course their manuevering and actions are not as clear cut since there are other factions that they have to deal with in court. The best is the triple lunch dates in Waner's place. I am warming up to Cheng Ruo who seems smitten with his bride. The said bride seems naive to the ways of the world but she is very likeable.

Story of Kunning Palace ⭐️ep11-14 I still find this show interesting. I just put it off since I am watching other dramas of the ML. I just get whiplash seeing him here and in TPR and LR. I like how smart both the FL and ML are. The court manueverings from both sides is interesting to me.

Love Next Door: Love it. I really like how it's more than just friends-to-lovers, but about seeing the main leads as individuals trying to forge their way professionally in this next chapter of their lives. Also, I stand by Mo-eum having the right to the drink and lollipop first. I hope they'll do something more with the secondary romance than making Dan-ho rude.

Are You the One (cdrama, up to episode 13): I have a love-hate relationship with the ML and his lies, whereby he is selfishly trying to have his cake and eat it too. But I also find it pretty comical to see how the FL's sincerity and ingenuity always complicates his lies and then he has to make a mad scramble, while she sits there placidly.

Love's Rebellion (cdrama, up to episode 6): Will have to pick up the iqiyi subscription sometime to continue. I'm really enjoying this the leads, the supporting characters, color palette, and the whole dynamic. Also I love the actor (Chang Long) who plays the the young dragon lord. Whenever he shows up, I know I'm in for a fun time.

Trillion Game (Japan) : This was a lot of fun. Its manga roots are clearly visible, so you'll need your suspension of disbelief at max settings, but Meguro Ren and Imada Mio dial their screen presence up to 11 and it strikes a nice balance between gleeful amorality and earnest sweetness.

No Gain No Love: Went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. It's a romcom leaning more on the "com" for now, but I like the FL's character and am looking forward to seeing her open up to the possibility of nontransactional love and romance. Somehow NGNL is taking a lot of tried-and-true tropes and making them feel fresh.

Love Next Door: So ... got through the first two episodes and haven't pressed play on the next yet, although I'm meaning to. I liked the opening week although it was a little, um, frantic? But it's a show that probably needs more attention than the fast-forward-heavy viewing style I use for ...

Beauty and Mr. Romantic: Has there ever been a pair of more delusional villains so certain that they're the righteous victims? Still waiting for Jin-dan's downfall. Surely it's about to happen. Kudos to Ma-ri for demonstrating how to have a conversation with your BF after being insulted by his mother. You tell him about it, he reassures you that he's on your side, and the two of you move on. Mature youngsters for the win!

Hidden Charm/Are You the One: Latest (and maybe greatest?) in a stretch of fantastic C-drama heroines this year (following The Double and Blossoms in Adversity) and the MLs who admire them.

Melody of Golden Age: Not breaking new ground, but completely watchable costume drama with another appealing FL.

Catch the Ghost: Stumbled into this one when it started autoplaying on Amazon after NGNL (algorithm doing things right, for once). It's slotting in nicely as my crime-show palate-cleansing watch with an endearing team and socially relevant cases.

_Romance in the house: I like the parents but not the kids, daughter is so full of hate that it's getting on my nerves, I don't expect her to easily forgive his father but I can't feel her emotions too, they lack background story I think?
I will keep watching though I'm not in a drop mood
_Love next door: love the actors and I keep watching because they're so cute, but whenever they mention their ages I feel uneasy, they are acting so childish, they can't be 34, can they? I think writer wanted to make a character like oh heayong in another miss oh, someone who cover her failures in life with being silly and childish but it doesn't work in this drama imo.
But I will keep watching, I want to see their love blooms!
_No gain, no love: liked it so much so far, plz stay good! Shin minah and Kim yongdea are not my favourite actors and not a match I'd recommend to any drama but magically it works, the actors and the couple both are good in this drama, how?!
_Like flower in the sands: I'm waiting for the magic to happen, 2 eps in and it's good but still not brilliant, I have high expectations.... sth like reply series or lingerie girls generation plz!

A stellar week of drama watching!

Loving LOVE NEXT DOOR, and it's all because of the main leads. Gotta say, these writers must have been squirming when LOVELY RUNNER unfolded.

I cannot recall ever seeing a Shin Min-a performance I didn't like. If she was a color, it would be the color of honey. She brings a unique warmth to the screen, and it's here in NO GAIN NO LOVE. Kim Young-dae is interesting here too, unexpected and vulnerable. Very much enjoyed the first two episodes.

MELODY OF A GOLDEN AGE has captured me, and I'm watching new episodes daily -- which is saying something. Agree with Gikata that this drama should have ditched the dubbing, but I like the leads so much I'm putting up with that.

So many on Dramabeans like ARE YOU THE ONE, that I returned after initially being put off and it was worth it. Sixteen episodes in. The leads are wonderful, as are the second leads -- and are these not a creepy Empress and baby Caligula Emperor?

My happy watch of the week goes to the exuberant 2015 cdrama GO PRINCESS GO! This is the original of the wonderful remake kdrama MR. QUEEN (2020). GO PRINCESS GO! tackles a whole range of challenging issues head on. The ending, while not for everyone, is grounding and personally, I liked it very much.

Finally, NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY (2017); up to episode 8. Oh my goodness Sun Li, now I know what all the shouting is about. One of my top watches this year was A DREAM OF SPLENDOR (2022), so here I get to once again enjoy Chen Xiao. This drama is special.

My wife really liked NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY and loved A DREAM OF SPLENDOR which was based upon a classic play from the Yuan Dynasty (a play written more than a hundred years before Shakespeare), with much of that drama being the "continuing story" after they evets in the play have passed.

Oh Wow, that's ... wow. SPLENDOR was a surprise for me, but I found it admirable they took on that story, and it was so handsomely rendered. And, anytime Mrs. Old Lawyer loves a drama, it's pretty much a sure bet I will too.

I forgot to mention, I'm so impressed with the opening and closing themes for NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY. The closing theme "Walking in the Midst of Moonlight" is so very lovely. Sung by Tan Wei Wei (what a clear, bright voice!) it echoes for me "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables. Both songs have unusual structure.

I know I have a long way to go with GOLD, clocking in at 74 episodes -- that's a lifetime. Sun Li just has this drama in her hands; but I'm also impressed with Peter Ho, and I know that watching what Chen Xiao can do with this role should be a worthy journey.

QUEEN WOO: I've only watched two out of four of the available episodes, but this one is really a vibe. I'm not sure why it's captivating me so much right now, because if you break it down, there's nothing original so far sageuk-wise. But Jeon Jong-seo has incredible on-screen presence, great chemistry with JCW (who also boasts tremendous presence--even when he's fully clothed), and manages to make her character seem believably capable and utterly overwhelmed. As to the sex, ep. 1 was pretty PG-13, but then with the extended Sapphic scene, ep. 2 clearly crossed into hard R territory, but we're not at "Game of Thrones" or HBO more broadly level yet. Of the sexual scenes we've been provided so far, only the rather tame love scene between the King and Queen actually developed the plot or characters. The first one in ep. 1, with the King clearly using the nymphs-in-loin-cloths to push the Queen away, attempted to serve a purpose, but I was mostly confused as to why he thought making the Queen jealous and sad would keep her safe (and props to her for seeming to know what he was doing). The scenes with the Queen's sister and the shaman were hella weird. I mean, the sex itself was well choreographed, I guess, and the women are beautiful so there was some sensuality to be had there. But I couldn't get over a couple of things. First, I do not understand the shaman's motives. To kill the King? (maybe, but she only advised one drop of the love potion, which wouldn't have killed the King--see the still-living-fish after sister put one drop in their water), to sincerely help the sister in the hopes of finagling a promotion? (ok, but if your goal is to help the sister have amazing sex with a willing King, why seduce her first?), or simply to seduce her because she wanted to (plausible but if the sister herself was drugged by this love potion poison, and clearly fantasizing or hallucinating by the end that she was really sleeping with the King, this raises some disturbing consent issues that will likely go completely unexplored). So, in short, although I have no objection at all to kcontent (or anyregioncontent) including sex scenes (or simply acknowledging that people have had and continue to have sex and it's fine and good), so far, again with the exception of the short love scene between the King and Queen, the scenes don't feel organic to the plot and are therefore more distracting or confusing than compelling.

LOVE NEXT DOOR: This week was a little quiet, contemplative, and slow, but still enjoyable. I continue to like the dynamic between the leads, where we can see they both know there has been and continues to be attraction but they're consciously trying to cut it off before it can go anywhere real. The English is a little cringey though. As I've said before, all these casting agents need to do is fly to LA or NY or Pittsburgh, for that matter, and stand on the corner for an hour and they're bound to find unemployed actors who could...

more adeptly handle a line reading in their native tongue than any of these people who end up with the job. I don't mean to be petty, but this kind of thing really takes me out of the scene and is so easy to remedy.

NO GAIN, NO LOVE: Here I am, absolutely shocked that I'm not minding KYD in this role. Yes, if I put my mind to it, I can still think of several other actors who might've been just as good or better in the role, but there's no urgency or bitterness to those thoughts. He's good in this! Everything is good in this! The writing is fun, consistent, and witty; the characters are interesting with clear motivations; and even the ridiculous premise makes sense in the hands of a writer who knows what she's doing. I mostly can't wait for the SLs' love story, and I'm dying to find out why the third sister knows her BF is a cheating cheater who cheats (and is sloppy about not making sure there is no evidence left behind on the couch) but is choosing to ignore it for now. I love all these actors and actresses, too. So far, the best romcom I've seen this year.

PERFECT FAMILY: This is a mainly a masterclass in what strong directing can do to overcome a weak story. Plus, I like the music. The whole thing is tense and sad, but also surprisingly and oddly funny at moments (the friend dancing for the dad to distract him from noticing his daughter on a ladder; the mean, screechy grandmother throwing down a huge vase to get her grand daughter to leave). I'm not sure I'll watch this one until the end, but I'm enjoying it in 15 minute intervals when I need a break from work.

I watched only one episode of Queen Woo and can't say much as it was a setup episode, but I somehow thought the sen/xual scene when they were treating the king was part of the treatment, something like that the excitement would help to overcome the pain.
Though... I'm not sure I needed to see it. 😅
I also was not always following all that politicking... and why King and Queen just couldn't have kids and be happily together, they clearly loved each other.
(Well, a romcom girl trying to watch a saguk 😄 ....because of Jeon Jongseo, she is indeed great here.)

Required fields are marked *

I got that it was part of a treatment to distract him while undergoing a painful procedure. But as far as a story or plot purpose, it didn't seem to have one. And it was totally overdone with the swaying and the women passing the crystal (or was it ice?) to each other from mouth to mouth.

As for why they didn't have kids, I'm guessing that one or both of them had a fertility issue; they clearly had a loving and passionate marriage. Why they couldn't be happy together, I don't know, either. Maybe that'll be explained later. But certainly, after two years apart, there didn't seem to be any real reason why the King had to try to trick her into thinking he didn't want or love her any more in order to somehow protect her.

I have to say, as a fellow lover of romance, I was glad to see that there was real love between the King and Queen, and it rested on genuine affection. I was worried that because we know from the beginning that the King dies, they wouldn't want the audience to get too attached to the pairing. But I appreciate the little we did get. I just wish it had made more sense.

I can only speculate on that one episode... and my patience with the guys in pointy hats was not great, nor was my attention to who belonged to which faction and had what interest... so I probably misremembered that someone persuaded the royal couple/Queen Woo/Somebody that it would be safer not to have kids now (why? No idea).

I also thought that that strange healing show was also meant for OTHERS (to send gossips), as a preparation of sending the Queen away. And I thought King was eye messaging it to the Queen. That he Has A Plan.... I think I read too much into it. 😆😆

LOL at "eye messaging." :)

0

I think it's safe to say that Queen certainly does have fertility issues - real history proves as much. Maybe in drama they'll spin it by keeping her second marriage on paper only, who knows. For King... we'll never know, I guess.

And OF COURSE they couldn't just be happy together - no one can while sitting on the throne in any somewhat serious sageuk, there is no bigger surefire killjoy and romance downer than palace intrigue in that realm!

JCW (who also boasts tremendous presence--even when he's fully clothed)

Now that's a generous praise!)))

There are many murky plot points indeed - why would King put THAT show to seemingly push his wife away if he was already planning to divorce and sent her away regardless? So that she won't argue with his decision? Not that she could've, since he is a King after all. He even admits his whole plan and noble reasons behind it to her face shortly after - so what was the point then? Seems like an overkill to make poor woman's worst day in life even crappier.

I think shaman was sent by someone who wanted King dead. She foresaw him dying shortly after that winning battle but did not warn him - surely she also knew that Sister Moron would/could mess with potion (which I suspect was meant to conveniently kill them both if they indeed banged - one drop is not lethal, but if you combine bodily fluids of two people who ingested one each... go figure) and achieve the desired result one way or another. Why sex tho? Idk, maybe just for kicks - sleeping with people you're planning to murder seems like a popular sport over there)))

Yeah, in both cases, the plot or story reason for the sex isn't strong enough to suggest it exists for any other reason than to show sex. Again, I'm not necessarily outright opposed to this, but it does fit the definition of gratuitous.

I'd also REALLY want to know why King didn't just take a concubine and try to have that badly needed heir with her before divorcing his clearly beloved wife in such a cruel and dramatic fashion. From history spoilers I got her eventual husband #2 did exactly that and it worked out fine. So, again, WHY? It cannot be that this show being a kdrama at heart under all smutty shell couldn't allow its guest starring non-ML to actually engage in some polygamy, even if for a very good reason, right?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have seen mature content in kdramas and (especially) kmovies, but a lot of what I saw in Queen Woo didn't seem to serve any purpose. The story has so much potential, but I wonder if things will get better in the second part.

No Love, No Gain: Seems to be the right sort of funny. Thank you!
Flowers in the Sand: Yes, this really is a good show, as everybody has said. I am a few episodes in. Can’t help wondering why people choose to stand in COVID safe distance outdoors, shouting secrets at each other?
Wonderland: Story seemed to be coming from something extraordinarily strange to something more like many other stories. But it was not bad! Especially not the Park Bo Gum part. (Had me really confused … I had to go agoogling read someone’s explanation). Uncanny Valley.
Bad Memory Eraser: I’m shipping the colormatched couple. And I repeat everybody are good and bad. I hope they fix 2FL’s alcoholproblem, though, but LOVE usually cures all. Though I got really annoyed with Shin this time.
Good Partners: Fine show.
Love Next Door: Hm. It doesn’t seem any writer is going to make it a real problem that FL’s mother is violent and on top of that also punishes her child by giving her the silent treatment, and also not putting food in front of her. I mean, after having been really nasty in front of others to her child, she is ashamed enough to give her food and allow ML to fix up her room. But it does not seem to be a major issue in this story, not even how the ML reacted to knowing that the FL would be beaten up by her mum. Gif’s on my fanwall.
The story itself moved on to cooperation with FL’s former employer, consisting mainly of bad guys, it seems. And a “work hard even when they are p*ssing at you” ethics leads the road to success.
Community Rewatch:
Happiness: : I have been a bad girl and am two episodes in front of the community. So I will try not to say very much, so as not to spill any dramabeans.

Not a K-drama:
The Dragon Prince: Exciting story. I am pretty tired of people being seduced to the dark side and I am happy there is only one season left. Stories need to end at some time, unless they are just cozy episode dramas, mostly comedies. Hurray for the one-season dramas!
Pippi Longstocking clips: Because I am copying her sweater, in the show it’s size xxxxl, while I am just making a size 3-4 years for a 2½-year-old redhead. But I have kind of winged the pattern, so have to ask a friend how to do the sleeves.
Go Precinct is supposed to be a follow-up to Marry My Dead Body But it definitely lacks the charm of that movie. When the first alive, but torturously pieces-cut-out-of teenage girl dragging herself over the bloodied floor - showed up on the screen, I opted out.
Duique: [dju:i:k]: New word I made for a good quality that only two persons have. A guy on the www said Josh Johnson had a unique quality in common with Chapelle. I protested, mainly because I don't like Chapelle, he is funnier than Bill Maher who I really detest, but he has the same relaxed use of privilege to make fun of others and feel good...

Some of you older commentators may remember that when offices were filled with typewriters, there was a fun thought experiment. If there was a roomful of monkeys, banging away randomly on typewriters, would their typing eventually produce great literature, say, the complete works of Shakespeare?

Old time kdrama viewers also know that back in the day, when budgets were tight, writers were scarce, and series ran for 759 episodes, this roomful of monkey typists was actually employed in real life to generate scripts. Results were mixed. Hangul being the most perfect language in the world, the monkeys from time to time produced some moving dialogue. But plot development was difficult to sustain, and storyline continuity was nonexistent. At least, however, the monkey written scrips were not full of sex and violence like today’s Netflix era kdramas!

Anyway, for those who are nostalgic for the random monkey typing era, may I recommend Bad Memory Eraser. Its free spirited and chaotic, in that characters completely free to act any way they want, and scenes chaotically pop out of nowhere. There is a love triangle, at least I think its a triangle. It might be a quadrangle, or maybe a pentagon involving a small dog. Its hard to say for sure.

But, of course I’m exaggerating—you know it isn’t really being written randomly by a roomful of monkeys, because there are some serious themes throughout. One important one, featured last night, is poop. In fact the way this show handles poop sets it above and beyond most recent shows. Last nights episode was quite poignant, and ended patriotically. In fact it was a poignant portrayal of poop, promoting patriotism!

In fact, now that I think of it, this show is only on the surface old school, randomly typed by a roomful of monkeys. Its nothing like the works of Shakespeare. Instead its likely a product of AI. So watch Bad Memory Eraser, both to recall an earlier era, and to say hello to the future of kdramas!

'DNA Lover' - dropped after five minutes & ran away screaming. This drama murdered Science.

'Love Next Door' - quite enjoyed the first two episodes of this, thanks to the snappy dialogue. But once the back-stories of the characters started to be introduced, it all just got tireder and tropier. Dropped at episode 4.

It feels like everything that is being written at the moment is all broad brush strokes - stock characters, stock settings, stock romances - and nobody cares to paint in any detail with a fine brush....

But having said that, I really enjoyed the first two episodes of 'No Gain, No Love'. It is not subtle - it is not remotely in any way subtle (cf. "the chairman's vigorous crotch") - but it had me laughing out loud. I hope it can keep up the energy when the male and female lead stop being mortal enemies and start drifting towards romance.

'Melody of Golden Age'. This would probably have been quite watchable, but I couldn't stand the way they voice-dubbed the male lead with such a generic cartoon-character voice. Dropped at episode 3.

'Go East'. Just not my cup of tea.

So I'm rewatching 'I Am Nobody'. I'm not usually one for superpower dramas, but the characters in this are just charming, the fight scenes are spectacular, and the soundtrack is fabulous.

It's Okay To Not Be Okay. I can see why folks got awards. So many good performances. I don't understand why Kim Soo Hyun is the highest (or one of the highest) paid actors but I can see why people like him. (Especially when watching BTS video of the filming. It's really cool seeing the collabrative nature of filming). It's a shame that Seo Yeji kept getting involved in controversies cause she's clearly a good actress (though knowing about her real life issues made the scenes when she was manipulating the guys weird to watch). Oh Jung Se was good as well. I'm sure I've seen him in other works but I couldn't think of anything but this. I went into this not knowing anything about it and was surprised how much it made me feel. I laughed and cried. It made me reflective. I'm glad I watched it. It's an interesting show for me because it's not like an all time high for me but it's made feel alot more than other dramas (especially in recent memory)

No Gain No Love. This wasn't on my radar until I saw that it's being recapped here and then I saw that it was available on Prime. I liked the first 2 episodes. I am always surprised when it's acknowledged that folks actually have sex in kdrama. Even more surprising was the talk of orgasms (or lack thereof). Oh man, it reminded me of a conversation I once had with my sister haha. I'm not a fan of the "glasses make you unattractive" trope. I'm not even saying that as a person who wears glasses, I just genuinely like the look of folks who wear glasses. He didn't look any more or less attractive with them (to me) and yet once he took them off it's like "who gave you the right to be hot?!" This is the first time I've seen a drama that features a foster mom; usually it's orphanages and this type of complicated family dynamic. I didn't like the host guy (or whatever he is but I suppose his purpose is to be unlikable). I like the back and forth. I like the graphics and look of the show. It's not a standout to me but it's an entertaining, fun, easy watch to me so far. I hope the voice actress can find an actual good guy and if not, I hope she can find happiness in being single. Oh, I hated that job interview so much! It just made me think of discrimination and how they weren't gonna hire them anyway (for being an orphan and for being a woman). Even if it was said it was just hypotheticals, I still felt it would probably be a toxic environment.

Mission Cross (Netflix movie) I've always wondered what a Mr & Mrs Smith type kdrama would look like haha. It's definitely not a great movie (to me) but it's an easy and fun watch. I love me a badass pair who fight together. I just learned Lee Sun Kyun's wife was in this. Never seen her work as an actress, I only learned of her after what happened.

Love Next Door. I wasn't expecting the realization of feelings to happen so soon so now I don't know what to expect for the rest of the season. Isn't something...

I can't seem to get into any dramas lately, so decided to do something I rarely ever do (because there are so many new dramas waiting to be watched) and that is re-watch an old drama. I am currently watching Fiery Priest and loving it all over again. Had the same experience with rewatching My Secret Terrius. They're just as good as they were the first time. Maybe I can appreciate the social justice/anger/corruption aspect of Fiery Priest a lot more now, now that I've been through some situations these past few years. Oh, the humor is just as wonderful and unexpected. So much wacky humor. Park Jae-bum is an incredible screenwriter. Waiting for his next masterpiece. Please just please get the casting for both leads better next time, okay? I can't help but want to see born to be gangsters like Lee Seo-jin playing the ML. Big, sad, regretful sigh. With dramas like Fiery Priest, how are there dramas like DNA Lovers? The difference in quality of the writing, man. I wasted a few hours training AI to write a script for DNA Lovers. What I did was add in elements I wanted, my favorite tropes, etc. The scripts AI churned out were not bad. AI came out with some decent scenarios and lines. I had my favorite tropes like friendly caring neighbor and grandma hurling insults, and the lines AI came up with were pretty funny. So sadly yes, AI could write a better script than the writer for DNA Lovers with a few hours more of training.

No Romance in the House: Blood is thicker than water, that's why you die faster when you drown in it. 😒
With brothers like him who needs enemies.
And Moo Jin is still Moo Jin. Mom could have a better story line than spending two episodes trying to figure out what her ex was doing in another country ten years ago.
I would've dropped it if it wasn't for Tae Pyeong and Mi Rae. They're too pure.
Sus Family: relative or detective, I don't care, I know you're the culprit!!
And mom, stop smiling and talk to your daughter, please.
And dad, why are you scared of your kid??? Finish your sentences man.
Love Next Door: This show seems to have no idea what to do with so many tropes and characters.
I hope it starts feeling more natural this week.
Zero Losses aka. No wedding, no work equality: Loved it so much I'm already preparing myself for the future disappoinment.
Cinderella at 2AM (dropped): I'll just enjoy the recaps.
I Picked Up A Sung Hoon On The Road (rewatch, E7): before The Kidnapping Day, this was my number one drama about kidnapping.
I miss shows this crazy and self aware.
Flowers That Bloom At Night (finished): LOVED IT! But we were robbed with that ending. Why cut it there??

BONUS
Night of the Living Dead (1968): the ending... 😂😂 Poor Ben.
This is the most fun I've had with a horror movie in a while. Loved it.
Bad Memory Eraser (recaps and comments): it's hard trying to figure out how much is sarcasm/jokes and how much I should take seriously. 😂😂 But that only makes it more fun to read. 😆

This drama is a tricky one. Depending on the person it either gets better every episode, or it gets worse every second. 😂

I love how unhinged and extra it is, but it also gets real deep. And what I love the most is that, unlike most dramas in this land, it doesn't pretend it isn't problematic and insane. The show knows it and talks about it (and in the funniest way of course).

Plus, this drama gave me a new perspective in Sung Hoon (I've never liked his acting that much).

Mom's Friend's Son: I don't think I can read recap comments because I love this show. I love the actors, and sure, there are moments when it's not perfect, but this is a good kdrama (so far). I like the variation on the trope for the characters--FL is jobless, but she could get a job if she wanted, she just wants to find something less soul-sucking. ML is accomplished and privileged, but he's not a chaebol, and his career ups and downs are really realistic.
Good Partner--caught up from 5-9 this week, and I am really appreciating the shows delicate exploration of custody.
(I have decided chunking may be my preferred method when we are in kdrama feast mode. I find it easier to watch 4 a week and alternate dramas than keep up with all shows.)
Bittersweet Hell--I really enjoyed this, although my binging habit of rushing at the end kicked in. Female leads were tremendous, the scenery was amazing, and high marks for handling some issues better than any kdrama I have ever seen, including self-love (I'd gush more, but don't want to give spoilers.)
Cinderella at 2 am--guilty pleasure that helped me survive the first days of school

Now that both seasons are out and the drama is complete, I’d say the best approach is to watch it as a single drama and don’t approach it/look at it as a drama split into 2 seasons— the watching experience may be better that way. Those of us who watched it live had no option but to wait, so we felt the break in-between the 2 seasons, so it didn’t feel the best and the editing woes of Season 2 felt more apparent, but for those who haven’t watched and plan to do so, I’d say— yes— approach it as a single drama (63 episodes total)

Right? I’m not sure why the drama has been overlooked and didn’t gain the love and hype I think it should have when it aired.
Zhang Jing Yi (FL actress) has always appeared on my screen in celeb news, but I’ve never paid any attention to her works until I read about her casting for the upcoming Zang Hai Zhuan (ML actor, Xiao Zhan, my C-ent. Actor bias), and then I was told time and time again that this “Blossoms…” is a good one so I just jumped the gun and I’m glad I did!! All I did yesterday was sit in front of my tv and watch this ☺️ And I’ve loved every minute of it, didn’t FF anything.
Oh yea, right off the bat, the Emperor gave off eery and creepy vibes, definitely kudos to the actor. So far, I’d say the weakest link for me is the ML actor, but it’s not so bad that I FF or eye-roll at him, he’s just…. there lol XD

WATCHING
Love Next Door
Despite the Jung-Jung chemistry, this continues to feel too something-something. Disjointed? I can't believe this is so meh with such an all-star cast.

No Gain, No Love
So fun! Honestly, I had no interest in it originally. But the cast is so good (incl. Joo Min Kyung - love her!) that I had to give it a try... and ended up really excited about the first 2 eps.

Hidden Charm c-drama
This drama is just so well written and produced. I love the story, the characters, and the pacing. And have I waxed poetic yet about the stunning costumes?!

Go East c-drama
As a new Tan Jian Ci fan I had to give this a try. He doesn't disappoint (at all). The story is different, the dialogue clever, and the comedy sophisticated. Great ensemble cast.

Melody of a Golden Age c-drama
This is working because of the leads. Ding Yu Xi is a PRESENCE, and Deng En Xi is surprisingly quite a mature actor for her age. The trope-heavy story is good enough.

Wishing everyone a beautiful week!

I’m waiting for Under the Skin season 2 and can’t wait to see what sort cases we will get (it’s sort of mind blowing that this drama is produced based on true cases/crime) despite the rumours of all of the writing woes of Season 2 🤔 I’m holding onto them all just being rumours until I see how it all is for myself when the drama comes… Whenever that’ll be

I'm watching 3 main dramas:

ARE YOU THE ONE - Aside from our captivating main leads, I hqve found myslfe slowly falling for the Bandit turned Emperor guy and his lovely Empress. I like how that 'love story' is unfolding. It feels realistic and true (and this, dear Beanies, is why I cannot watch too many rom coms, they mess with my radar 🙄 I'm not good at suspending reality for too long).

GOOD PARTNER - I'm just about to sit down with my cup of tea and Sunday brunch to watch this week's episodes. It is, without a doubt, one of the best shows on TV at the moment. No one can tell me otherwise.

NO GAIN NO LOVE - I keep wanting to call it 'no love no gain.' The first two episodes exceeded my desperate hope for them to be good and for KYD to do well. I like the entire cast - no one feels dispensable, even the high school kids who get an earful from our FL in the convenience store or the crying foster babies. Everyone fits. The humour is in the dialogue and that is so delicious to me. Let's see how next week goes 🤞🏿

I'm reducing my drama watching so I can get back to my writing and reading. I'm making my way through:
MAAME by Jessica George
THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO by Taylor Jenkins Reid
PIRANESI by Susanna Clarke
THE WAY OF INTEGRITY by Martha Beck
THE LIFE & AFRICAN EXPLORATIONS OF DAVID LIVINGSTONE by David Livingstone

Have a wonderful week, Beanies, and may your drama watching (and reading!!) this week bring you joy.

I wanted to watch No Gain No Love, but for some reason Amazon Prime won't let me watch it in Korean. I have to wrestle with it. One of the things I like about watching K-dramas.

Because I have been loving Good Partner, I decided to take the advice of a true-hearted beanie and watch Sell Your Haunted House. Right now I'm watching episode 11 of Good Partner and thinking, "Jang Nara's acting is wonderful and subtle in the later show, she shows professional growth," and "the 2021 show is more my speed, I really like the humor better." I wonder whether I will finish both of them. Maybe.
Tomorrow I will try to find time to watch both new episodes of Love Next Door, which I've been enjoying.

I had to adjust mine. There are separate settings for audio (as in language) and subtitles. If you stay through the credits, you will actually see who is 'voicing' each character in French, Spanish, Japanese (but you need to read Kanji), etc. I adjusted to what I want: Korean with English subtitles- but it is actually two separate menus to do that.

The Amazon settings for NO GAIN NO LOVE were goofy, but tech-challenged me figured it out without blowing up the TV. I'm watching in Korean with English subtitles also, as OldLawyer describes. Live watch:
No Gain No Love. 2/12 Entertaining and it’s clear that there is a bit of enemies to lovers to this story. Or else a strong dislike due to misunderstanding by both which will likely clear up quickly.

Love next door: currently on pause awaiting hubby’s return but it wasn’t captivating enough for me to want to cheat on episodes 3 and 4

Community watch- Happiness has been so fun and look forward to more discussions as the episodes so go. I can’t believe I am still seeing things in new lights after so many rewatches.

Cdrama- You are my secret. Very similar in idea to No gain no love of fast fake marriages but this one sold me on the heart when I discovered the umbrella he used protected her from the rain was the same one she gave him in high school. The man has been smitten since then and she has no clue. Hmmm wait! Similar to Happiness? Totally different spin though.

How many ways can 2 people end up in a marriage of convenience? Apparently I can watch 3 different ones all at once and still not be bored.

I hope you enjoy You are my secret. It's a very nice romance (the second couple -or is it the third one?- was great).

I like the trope of fake couples or newly weds who don't know each other so much, so I started a Japanese minidrama called Shanai Marriage Honey (the plot is very similar to You are my secret), but I dropped it halfway the second episode. I wasn't enjoying it at all.

4

reply

Required fields are marked *

SHANAI MARRIAGE HONEY has very little in the way of plot if you are looking for a regular romcom. But there is more to it than at first appears once you really understand what the story is really about: It is really about what happens after the wedding as our young couple figure out how to be married- and that they can really love each other. It is an important question in real life but one generally ignored by most dramas. It turns out that 'Happily ever after' involves some real work and, even if it is presented in about the fluffiest way possible that is what the show is actually about.

1
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think a reason why I wasn't enjoying it was because everything was moving too fast, so I didn't have time to understand the main couple.
And I found them FL's non-stop voice-off quite annoying, to be honest. There were too many cringey situations, and the ML was trying to make her nervous just for fun...

Maybe I'm not used to J-dramas style yet (even though I have watched many animes since I was practically a baby).

2
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

It does move very fast- it is a show that literally dispenses with the entire romance before the wedding.

Live action J-dramas are much different from anime.

2

But in this case, the series is based on a josei manga (manga for adult women) and the FL and ML's behaviour is very "anime" and unnatural. That was a little shocking.

But I'm sure there are other J-dramas I could enjoy.

*mystic pop up bar* got left in the lurch somehow. i was really enjoying it and want to know what happens, but then i started *the double*, so yeah. might try and finish it.

finished *the double* (c-drama) and started it again LOL this time paid attention to the beginning. what can i say, i'm low-key obsessed with the male lead and with pretty much everything. it's weird to see that while there's a lot of tea drinking, hardly anyone eats LOL so used to k-dramas having a meal scene every 5 minutes, i actually miss the eating!

almost done with *star trek voyager* this one was a slow burn for me. i watch it before bedtime and fall asleep with the show going and i don't care *too* much about what i missed.

Vying for the title of the year's worst comedy seems to be 'DNA Lover', the first episode of which was just plain appalling. I may settle down to watch it just to see the actors embarrassing themselves.

Of course back last March we had the truly bizarre comedy 'Chicken Nugget' which defied description. Can you call in 'bad' if the final product was exactly what the director wanted? I saw Junk Hoyeon on an interview show and she seemed a bit traumatized it. 'It was my first comedy... but did anyone watch it?' she seemed to be saying.

I’m only watching one drama consistently at the minute, and that’s 엄마친구아들. I am absolutely loving it. The tension is building, and I can’t wait for it to hit a fever pitch (you know, unless the train falls off the tracks, which dramas want to do). Of course, I watch anything with 정해인 because my crush on this human is eternal🥰 There is something about his presence that is all at once gentle and affecting. The subtlety he brings to his craft is always a joy to watch and feels especially apt for a role wherein he has to exercise such great restraint. Oh. My. Days. There are moments when a scene ends, and I realize I haven’t been breathing. I also watch most things with 김윤지 because she’s just so lovely to me (and 이번 생은 처음이라 was/is everything to me). Her character’s arc is giving me what I wanted Doctor Slump to give and has been arousing deep reflection on my own career plans. Episode 6, and particularly 조한철’s performance, moved me to my core. My tears were on the edge throughout that entire scene and collapsed when he did. Truly, give that man all the awards 👏🏽👏🏽
I keep flirting with other dramas, but nothing else seems to be sticking, so I won’t force it.
