Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (August 10, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

The Auditors: I take back whatever I thought or said out loud. Jin Gu looks amazing with long hair.

DaebakGrits

Serendipity’s Embrace: I can’t decide if this drama is moving too slow or too fast. Parts of the story are boring and drag at a snail’s pace, but the actual romance feels like it’s progressing faster than our characters’ emotional development, especially since Hong-joo’s ex — and Hong-joo’s lingering feelings and trauma associated with her first love — is coming off like an unwanted third in their supposedly monogamous relationship. Meanwhile, Hoo-young is diving head first into this romance without checking to see how deep the water is because at any moment his mommy might show up to drag him back to the U.S. In short, I don’t find their romance (and the pacing thereof) all that appealing, but there isn’t anything else airing in the Monday-Tuesday slot so…*shrugs*

Miss Night and Day: I didn’t mind that there was a serial killer on top of a magical element on top of a romance, but the lackluster execution of all three ingredients is where this drama lost me and caused my enthusiasm to slowly dwindle each week. The identity of the killer was implausible and with poorly conceived psychological motives, the dual day/night identities was better used as a plot device when it was helping Mi-jin infiltrate night clubs, and the second male lead had better chemistry with Mi-jin. Disappointed this wasn’t the banger I was expecting, but that’s far too often the case in dramaland.

The Auditors: I was not expecting to like this drama, but I think I needed something a little formulaic that I could passively watch while doom scrolling on my phone before bed. I can’t say that I’m in love with the younger cast members all that much, but the tension between Cha-il and the morally gray Dae-woong is terrific. Loved their team up, and I’m rooting for Dae-woong to lead the family empire.

My drama week is so barren and with two ongoing shows ending by Tuesday, it'll be even more so 😫. All the new shows can't start soon enough!

COMPLETED
Miss Night and Day - Didn't live up to potential for me. Mostly because I never warmed up to Mi-jin and her mumbly silences. Would always prefer the Lim Soon scenes - Lee Jung-eun is a star.

ONGOING
Good Partner - N/A

The Auditors - The buddy cop comedy vibes of the last two episodes were weird but entertaining.

Serendipity's Embrace - The mom, and the ex, are disrupting the mildly sweet feel of this. I think it's good this ends next week.

WATCHLIST
Planning to try out Romance in the House.

C-DRAMAS
Couldn't get into Dashing Youth at all so have put that to the side for now.

Started You Are My Secret, a sweet little workplace/marriage drama. Am up to Ep. 13 and the romance seems a bit one-sided so far but hopefully it'll get better. Not sure why this needs 32 episodes though.

YAMS: I am upto ep 16. They are cute but like you said it feels a bit one sided. He is too perfect and too thoughtful making it feel unreal 😂😂
I do enjoy scenes with Zhao and Rao though. Totally on board that ship!!
Yes, This should be a 24 episode drama. Totally.

YAMS haha! I hadn't thought of the acronym before. I like this and I think it gets better as it goes along. The most unreal part of the story for me so far is how she lands her first client.

T-minus 1 day until ATEEZ!!!!

Currently Watching
Love Andante: 🎹 it feels like a made-for-tv movie in terms of quality, and uses the goat sound effect. The episode was short and required little attention. Not sure if I'll continue. Probably a drop.

The Auditors: 🏗📈 I liked these episodes much better. I LOVE Seo-jin - she's thoughtful, serious, and competent, and I'm glad she got more focus this week, along with VP. I'm continually fascinated with VP and his motives and choices. And we finally got more backstory!!! Seo-jin may not be his actual niece, but he still does Dad Stuff and treats her like a daughter, which I love. This drama really missed out on not making Seo-jin and VP the main characters. Without personal connections and agendas, the cases can feel hollow. Two more to get my bean! 🫘 (P.S. if Shin Cha-il is Batman and Han-soo is Robin, then VP is Nightwing 😂)

Miscellaneous
75% done with both River Where The Moon Rises and Hwayugi. Both are slow going; reviews will be forthcoming. Started Welcome to Samdalri and loving it so far. Will try Romance in the House for the plot, and Perfect Family for the cast.

C-dramas
Snow Fall: (10-15) Decided to drop this after 15 because I got emotionally invested, read about the ending, and didn't want to feel depressed. To wrap up, our mature vamp paid visual homage to ALL of the vampire tales that came before, and FL doesn't bat an eye at any of the weirdness, which (hilariously) nonplusses our vamp. He has been falling against his better judgement, and she's already there. ML and FL are both excellent. That reveal in ep. 13 was paced very well, and the events of ep. 15 were an emotional high point. The drama turned into an examination of what it means to be human (along with cartoonish levels of violence and moody emo vibing), which is great until all the consequences + censors lead to the inevitable ending 😅

In other news... Mom finished watching Go Ahead and said "It was just excellent, but very intense emotionally." I think she'd recommend it, but with the caveat that it can cause anxiety. My Sweet Mobster is next!

Are you going to see ATEEZ live?

I've heard Go Ahead is a tough watch so I've been wondering about the upcoming Korean remake as well. Sorry to hear about Snow Fall. I've seen enough difficult endings for right now so I've been focusing on upbeat stories. Mom is going to love MSM!

Yes I'm seeing them live (and taking my mom!)!!! I'm very excited, as this will be my first boy group concert! 😄✨️🙌

Yeah we talked about Go Ahead (I haven't watched it) and she explained about how realistic the angst was, which gave her anxiety. So even though she said it was very good, she wasn't sure about putting it on her favorites list. I'm curious about the Korean remake as well... since the cast is familiar to me, I may try it, but I watch dramas to avoid REALISTIC angst, so I'm not sure 😅

I'm also in a space right now where I need upbeat stories and endings! Yes I think she's going to love it - I can't wait to hear her reactions!!!

Live Watches
Miss Night and Day: I hear all the criticism and acknowledge that you are all correct and I still don’t care that much. Apart from the noble idiocy I was reasonably happy with how it wrapped up. I wish that Mi-jin had a different reason to need some distance (“I need to figure this situation out” “I’m trying to focus on studying right now” etc) but at least it was short. I’m also applauding the show for only having a six month time skip at the end - usually dramas are absolutely married to that one year mark and I have no idea why. I liked that they took time to focus on the central relationship of the show - Mi-jin’s relationship with herself - and was glad that they gave it time to breathe.

감사합니다: It seems like we are supposed to think Se-ung killed his hyung (and maybe he did) but I’m interested to see if hyung’s wife ends up being a baddie. Maybe she’s the one who’s been stealing from the company forever? Or murdered her husband? We’ll find out soon!

Is it fate?: I don’t really mind that our leads got together without knowing each other super well. There is mutual attraction and interest, and they have fun when they are together, which is enough for me. I do sort of wish the show would show them talking and getting to know each other more - I’m starting to get uncomfortable whenever they are in the car together. Sickness/disease noble idiocy is my least favorite type, so I was cheering when Mr. Vice Principal told his nephew to keep walking. I was absolutely on Gym Teacher’s Team until the very last interaction and now I really need him to get his words in the right order. I’m still having fun though - it’s nice to have a chill drama once in a while!

Recent Dramas:
Welcome to Samdalri: (4 episodes in) I love the flashbacks of the friend group so much! My heart hurts for Sam-dal and Yong-pil though. The scene at the end of ep 4 when he was practicing asking her out was adorable and I’m going to need them to get back together immediately.

K-action Movie of the Week
Mission: Cross: This is a brand new offering from Netflix and I thought it was super fun! Definitely a Mr and Mrs Smith type story, but cuter. It was fun to watch both sides of the pair circle around the same case, and the eventual team up was just as good as I was hoping! Special shoutout goes to the cop underlings when they acted out what they imagined was being said at the bus stop between the husband and “his girl” - definitely the funniest moment of the whole movie! They should be makjang writers! It’s fun and light and stick around for the Narco Saints reference during the credits!

I'm three episodes in to Welcome to Samdalri and am loving it!! It's a standard setup with standard themes, but a veteran cast of all-stars who are knocking it out of the park. And it's touching my heart, too, which is what I was looking for.

I bet Hwang Jung Min couldn't hold his laughter when the credit ending scene with Joseph is done 🤣🤣🤣. The cop underlings are definitely hilarious to watch as well (the way they reenact with their own dialogue was gold!). Even the comedy by Jung Ah is cracking lol 😆😆😆😆

One Spring Night (13-16): Really loved this, despite some problems and annoyances. As for the problems: the way the show treats Seo-in's sexual assualt. Ever since the pregnancy reveal, the show seemed afraid to actually mention that huge elephant in the room, until they finally mentioned it once, before basically forgetting it again. Seriously, why is it ignored 99% of the time, like the show is afraid to even mention it? Another annoyance is how Jeong-in kept apologizing to Gi-seok, when I don't think that was necessary? Yes, she should've been more proactive, but he should've actually listened when she asked for a break, or break up. Calling it a betrayal is a bit of a stretch. But anyway: I loved the leads, the romance, the sisters, friends and families (except the dad obviously).

Come and Hug Me (20-21): The evil reporter is dead! But the other annoying reporter is back, because we can't have good things. Also, that kiss was bad, I'm sorry. It was also so short that it felt like show just wanted to get it over with (though maybe that was a good thing).

Twenty-Five Twenty-One (1-4): Full disclosure, I know the leads don't end up together, but I decided to watch it because I wanted to have trust that the writer from Search WWW had more to say beyond just a sad ending. And I really like it, and I can definitely sense the writer from Search WWW at work here: it has great (female) characters, interesting stories, great dialogue & humor, and of course a good amount of queerbait! All the elements are there, and so far so good.

Bossam: Steal the Fate (1-4): I avoided this show for a long time, mostly because I saw the kidnapping premise and was like "yeah, nope", but my curiousity finally got the better of me. And… it's worse than I imagined, because I certainly didn't expect the ML to sell the FL off into prostitution. I certainly hope the ML grows over time, because my respect for him is basically non-existent. Despite that, it is good though.

Hot Stove League (1-16): I do love a good sports drama about a sport I know nothing about (all of them), and this was exactly that. It had heart, good stories & characters (though admittedly, I would probably hate the ML in real life). Also, was Se-young the general manager at the end? Because I love that idea.

Alienoid: Return to the Future: Just as crazy, stupid and fun as the first one!

I loved both One spring night too and I'm glad you mentioned the dad because i hated how much his awfulness got glossed over. He was a genuinely horrible person and the worst father, i wanted the nice mom to kick him out so we didn't have to keep seeing his spineless hypocrite face and see how daughters try to pacify him. Lol, that apart, i really enjoyed the rest of the drama, it had a really interesting streak of realism to the pace and dialogues and the relationships, platonic and romantic were nicely done.

Hot stove league is such a gem. I don't care about baseball, I'd probably find the ml irritating in rl, but the charm of good writing and good acting is i was still so completely into it. It was my introduction to Park Eun Bin and I'm so glad i found her. I'm pretty sure she was general manager at the end. It was also really funny because i watched it right after i watched Good manager/Chief Kim, so the Namgoong Min character whiplash was amazing, he's so good.

THE AUDITORS (Ep 9-10) Audit in this show is far afield from official financial examination of the organization’s accounts. It is a corporate cartoon crime fighting unit that has bulldozed through various departments (construction, bidding, subcontracting, HR) to exterminate “rats” (the bad guys.) Maybe it should have been called the Exterminators. I was hoping for more and better use of Seo-Jin in these episodes. The show could have been better centered with Shin and VP sharing more airtime together in designer suits and man buns.

The show’s final approach is a well worn trope of corporate fratricide. The final “audit” is going to be a murder investigation because that is . . . what superhero accountants do.

THE ZONE SEASON 3: The new season with two new cast members seemed to be a walk through even though the execution of the premise was good. The chemistry seemed lacking and their actions weak.

VOLCANO HIGH (2001/MTV dub) A wonderful cast (Jang Hyuk, Shin Min-A, Kim Soo-Ro, Kwon Sang-Woo, Kong Hyo-Jin, Jung Sang-Hoon, Heo Jun-Ho, and Byun Hee-Bong) in a Korean version of a classic 1970s kung fu movie. It has the basic elements of high school angst in a fantasy setting to be a cult film. The dub was funky because in 2004 MTV had to shift programming since the music labels were pulling MVs and demanding royalties. MTV golden age of counter-programming including strange movies and anime series.

Miss Night and Day (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D+ / D+ / D / D / D / D / D
Oh hey it’s Yoon Park! I’m looking forward to his next drama even if he’s playing yet another 2nd lead (but I hear he is already married so that’s promising). As for this show, I wished it used the fantasy concept to explore ageism or even the fragility of life, but the writer just went serial killer childhood trauma parent death random romance deus ex machina, yeah.

Love Andante (Episode 1-2) - Mood: D+
It’s nothing tragic but it’s clearly nothing more than a show to pass the time as the Olympics conclude and shows resume. I don’t see anything beyond the awkward cohabitation romance and a few clumsily assembled side plots but who knows, I’m always up to be surprised? But I hope I won’t be disappointed by the usual political drama, even if I can’t help but expect it.

Bad Memory Eraser (Episode 1-2) - Mood: C-
Ok, this is better than I had envisioned it. Yes, there is still an outlandish setup and the drama is already teasing some stuff that’s underwhelming like the little bro being responsible for the accident or the first love being related to the FL (implying it might be true that the FL might be some childhood love for the ML) but it’s kinda fun to watch? And Lee Jong Won!

Serendipity’s Embrace (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D
I mean, how do you expect me to like the show when you toss in such a lousy and lame cliche in the ML’s overbearing mom, whose sole job is to drag out the romance (mind you, the show is ending next week). It’s also telling that they’re rushing the 2ML’s arc because two romance obstacles in the finale would be too much. Is the solution to just toss in two shirtless guys?

LIVE WATCHES:

1. THE AUDITORS - What in the heckin' heck? Are these still auditors? It's still entertaining but logic holes everywhere LOL!

2. SERENDIPITY'S EMBRACE - The romance has finally properly kicked in but 2ML please get your act together before 2FL writes you off.

OTHER ONGOING DRAMAS:

I've paused LACK, BRING IT ON GHOST, and THE CURSED for now as I'm dealing with a huge post-sabbatical pile of work. I've return to them once I'm gotten everything back on track.

OTHER WATCHES:

I've been in a Studio Ghibli re-watch roll this week - they are really good for falling asleep to during bedtime. So I've had the following on while I get ready for bed: HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE, MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO, WHISPER OF THE HEART, OCEAN WAVES, THE WIND RISES, and ONLY YESTERDAY.

I've also watched 18x2 BEYOND YOUTHFUL DAYS which is a Taiwanese-Japanese romance drama with a Taiwanese ML and Japanese FL. It's very autumnal and is all about lost second chances and treasuring real love when it's right in front of you. It's pretty subdued and poignant.

Overall, I'll be watching fewer dramas now that I'm back at work with priority given to the two live watches which I now watch during lunchtime. Hopefully I'll be able to fit in 1 or 2 more dramas to be watched on Fridays and Saturdays.

Hi Beanies!
I hope you all are having a great weekend.

What I am watching:

_ C-drama You are my secret (16/32). On air on Viki. It keeps being entertaining, the chemistry between the main leads is very good, the ML (Miles Wei) is a huge green flag, the FL (Karlina Zhang) is a flawed but nice and hard working woman, her parents are great, co-workers are interesting enough (their scenes are never annoying)... Recommended if you are looking for an unpretentious and slide-of-life romance.

_ C-drama The Story of Minglan (27/78). I keep watching it but slowly. It's not very bingeable, because some episodes (like 27th ) are very hard.

What I have finished:

_ The Red Sleeve. If only all the show had been like the last two episodes, which were very good... But the whole drama is very inconsistent. It's like three dramas in one, one after the other. It never moved me, but at least the last two episodes were how I thought all the drama would be, and the script improved noticeably.

_ Drama Special KBS 2023 "Love Attack". Cute and simple in a good way. A feel-good watching. A pure, whole rom-com condensed in 63 minutes.

_ Anime Wakako Zake (12 episodes. 2 minutes each). It's very simple. A young woman likes to endulge herself trying foods and drinks everyday after work, in her way home. If you are very interested in Japanese gastronomy, this is a must watch.
There is a live action drama too. The first season (there are seven) was released in 2015. I have watched two episodes (23 minutes each) and it's exactly like the anime, but better (more informative too. All the restaurants are real).

Western shows:

_ The Umbrella Academy Season 4. (1/6).

I am rewatching The Red Sleeve. It started as a romcom, then turned into a palace thriller, and ended like a tragic romance. It still kind of works though. The scenes between Crown Prince and King Yeongjo are the highlights of the drama.

________________________

Totally agree. And one of my favorite scenes: King Jeongjo (Junho) totally drunk and drawing paintings (lines and dots) while laughing out loud.
I don't usually like drunk scenes but I found this was funny and sad at the same time.

My other favorite scene: when the FL imagines herself going out with her friends (but she is not allowed anymore). Lee Se Young expressed that longing very well.

I forgot to say I have watched two episodes of the minidrama "Alice, the final weapon". I started it for Song Geon Hee, not gonna lie, but the plot seemed interesting. Not sure if it will be a drop, because I didn't like the first episodes (too much violence only is bearable when a show is very good. Example: Weak Hero Class 1).

I looove Minglan! One of my fab cdramas. The beginning parts did feel slower but as I watched I became more and more addicted. I was the opposite and think I managed to binge it in like a week lol

I also just started Umbrella Academy S4 last night. So good, imo one of the best Netflix shows!

I have already watched four episodes of Umbrella S4. Why is this last season so short? It's being funny. I agree with you, this is one of the few good Western shows Netflix has produced.

About Minglan, I can't binge-watch it but I'm determined to finish it because it's a masterpiece.

Update:

I have started the famous classic "I'm sorry, I love you" (2004). I have watched three episodes, and it's entertaining.
My thoughts so far: among the four main characters there aren't more than four functional neurons (the ones they need to survive).
The only intelligent form of life is a 8 year old child.

But the experience of watching old dramas is always interesting. Everybody was so young! And I find it amusing to see South Korea as it was twenty years ago.

Live watches

Serendipity’s embrace
I have enjoyed this mini series so I really want it to end well.

Bad memory eraser
This is not going to be a rewatch but it is an ok light watch on a Friday which is usually an empty slot. The Saturday episode is competing with all the other weekend watches.

The Auditors
I hope they tie up the loose ends well a lot has happened but yet not a lot of explanation for the early flashbacks for Chail and his cold demeanour.

Tiger with wings - Japanese
Finally new episodes have been released we are still two weeks behind but hopefully there will be more next week as the two week wait was torture😞

Umi no Hajimari - Japanese
Beautiful drama of a quiet and thoughtful man who finds out that his university girlfriend ended the relationship because she wanted to keep the baby but not burden him. He finds out at her funeral that he is the dad of a 7 year old and we watch him come to terms with this and the implications for his current relationship.

Looking forward to Romance in the house when the first episode is released later today. I am hoping that it is a better fit than Love Adante which I had to drop after the first episode.

Finished UNCLE SAMSIK. It was such a good drama right through to the end! Samsik was such an amazing mastermind and character.

MISS NIGHT AND DAY went out with a whimper, which is often the case with dramas that rely on a fantasy element. Loved Lee Jung-Eun, she is one of my favourite actresses. I think she was wearing very little or even no make up for most of the time to make her character look older.

THE AUDITORS remains breezy and unrealistic and very watchable.

None of the new dramas are tempting for me, so I rewatched DR. CHA and enjoyed it even more now then the live watch. Uhm Jung-hwa and Kim Byung-chul are both excellent and the birthday cake scene is now my new favourite, I could rewatch this alone over and over again.

My Sweet Mobster🦌🏰(16/16): Fifth Bean of 2024!🥳I normally take in whatever I am given like a sponge, but even I noticed the decrease in writing quality in the last quarter. However, I can let it all slide because the cast, Uhm Tae-Goo in particular, ran with whatever the script gave them and performed the heck out of it. As a result, the show never lost its humor or its big heart. This show was my weekly reward and I will subscribe forever.❤️

The Matchmakers🦆🦆(13/16): Lady Park!!!😱 I have myself to blame, I had been wishing and hoping that she would eventually snap, but Yowza!😮Please tell me she won Best Villain in the 2023 Roundup!😏

Life on Mars 🥳ep14-16 The last three episodes just flew by and a lot has happened. Tae Joo went through a lot in these episodes as he try to resolve his present and future realities. All the eventual talk about finding his happiness already made me realize that he will chose that reality. His found family needs him and he can't let them down.

The Auditors🤞 ep9-10 I enjoyed Cha Il and Dae woong's partnership. I too wished they started this sooner. As they say better late than never. Se Woong is looking more suspicious though. I sure hope this drama wraps up the story well next week.

Joy of Life SE ❤️ep11- 18 I am hesitant to talk about the details of the show and the various court intrigues to avoid spoiling it for those who have not seen it yet. I like the continued humor bits here and there amidst the serious topics with the imperial family, officials and the ML and his family. My favorite characters are Fan Xian and his siblings RuoRuo and Sizhe. Song Yi is also styled prettier here than in FYH.

The Princess Royal ❤️ep31-40 I am rooting for PWX and LR. Our fake divorced couple are improving on themselves and their relationship. SRQ is a hypocrite and I tune out whenever he is onscreen. He did get his swan song which I ffwd though since I do not want to see him a second longer. It is enough to know his fate. I liked our lead characters's arc as well as Chuan, Ya and other key players. My heart broke for LR when she found out who killed her in her past life. But I am wiith her when she said that this is a new life and should make better choices to make it the best version they could. Also you must watch the special episode, its light hearted and cute.

Jinny's Kitchen S2 ep6-7 I do not write about this show weekly but I do enjoy it a lot. They are back and in Iceland. Iceland is such a beautiful place. The cast endured in their daily tasks and was finally rewarded by finally seeing the aurora on their fourth day. The episodes are long and the food they make always makes me hungry. I would like to add that Minsi is such a great addition to the group. She is such a talented and amazing intern who is very capable around the kitchen.

Story of Kunning Palace⭐️ ep11 - I will start this soon.

Serendipity's Embrace The characters's actions don't really make sense with their behavior but it's cute.

The Auditors The other auditor is the only character who knows what she's doing and in a professional way. The team should take notes.

Bad Memory Eraser: 7.0 Jin Se-Yun is doing much better than I expected. The ML really grates but I think that is more the character than the actor, so things might improve when/if he gets a growth arc. Meanwhile the brother gets lines like "They say amnesia is a common aftereffect of an accident" -- is that the writer apologizing?

Miss Night & Day: 7.5

Serendipity's Embrace: 7.0 Besides KSH, the best thing about this show is that it is a show -- on a day when I don't have any other shows.

Love Andante: 6.0 This is also a show. One that I am likely to drop. Everything else I could say has been said by others in First Impressions.

The Devil Judge!!!!!
I didn't plan on watching, tried it on a whim and from the first ep I can say I've found something really special.
Ji Sung as Judge YoHan is a force to be reconed with. He have a theatrical quality to him that is very hard to pull off, and every moment he's on you can tell exactly why this person reached the status he did.

I also loved looking at the small reactions in the background - Kim GaOn started clapping only a moment after everyone else.

I was in a Kdrama slump for the longest time and I feel I've found my way out of it!

WATCHING

Finally caught up with Is It a Coincidence?. Overall I find it satisfying and the soundtrack is surprisingly good. CJH is wonderful as always. Love the FL's two best friends.

Also tried the first ep of Love Andante, which is low-budget in every way. It doesn't shy away from poking fun at itself with CLOY references, but don't expect deep (or accurate) reflections on North/South relations. It's a drop.

I'm thinking about giving Romance in the House a try tonight. (It's only 12 eps!) The premise is a little different and I'm curious to see how they handle it.

For c-drama I'm enjoying the modern romance You Are My Secret, with its slightly different take on the contract marriage trope. I really like the leads who have cute chemistry. Enjoyable support cast too. A pleasant watch with both romantic and amusing moments.

The big winner this week for me is Love Between Fairy and Devil which I started on a whim. The script is so well-paced and quite funny at times, at least in the first half. The second half delivers some drama dished up in realistic character growth. Wang He Di and Esther Yu are really perfect for their roles. High quality costumes, sets, and CGI. ❤️

Meanwhile I'm patiently-ish waiting for this coming week's releases of Mom's Friend's Son and Hidden Charm. They both have fabulous casts, so I have high expectations for these two dramas 🙃

Finished: c-drama Love Me, Love My Voice, which has beautiful ancient/fusion music and excellent ensemble cast chemistry. This is a gentle and heartwarming story filled with good friendships and great music. Some storylines get a bit repetitive/drawn out, and the FL is sugary sweet. But overall it's an easy on the eyes, ears, and heart experience. Recommended for Tan Jian Ci fans. He has such a pure, soft, deep voice - and we get to hear lots of it in this drama. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfRAW5vMnlY ("100 Years of Dreams Gone By")

Have a great week beanies! 💕

I am glad you finally gave it a try and enjoyed it. The beanie hype, internet buzz and trailers got me to watch it. That was at a time that there wasnt much kdrama that I liked and this cdrama just captured by interest. It was very fun and bingeable. I admit the silly and naive FL turned me off at the beginning but she got better. White haired DFQC was a sight to behold, Dylan Wang rocked it. Now I occasionally watch cdramas if I am in the mood for wuxia or xianxia.

Beanie hype for A Journey to Love is how I ended up watching my first c-drama. That was a pretty intense first choice, lol. Still... I absolutely loved it. Totally mesmerized.

I hadn't seen Dylan Wang in anything before and was really surprised by how good he is (at least in this). Those long white/silver wigs have not gotten old for me yet. Nearly every actor looks good in them, regardless of age!

3

@zindigo same LBFAD is the only drama I have seen him in. He supposedly rocked to fame in the reboot version of Meteor Garden but I havent seen that. I have only a few c/kdrama characters with the white wigs and so far havent seen anyone look bad in it.

AJTL is definitely an intense first cdrama. I loved that too. I am still in denial with the ending. 🤣 loved all the characters. Ning, Ruyi and Yang are my faves.

4

@zindigo I loooove those white wigs on men. It's one of my weaknesses. I've been watching cdramas (especially costume ones) for many years and those white wigs still makes me swoon 😍 But I suggest to never look up Dylan's white wig in Miss the Dragon. It looked like someone bought it for $5 from a supermarkets Halloween rack 🤣 (I also suggest to never watch the drama lol)

2

I couldn’t get into Love Between Fairy and Devil — the (what I think is horrible) CGI in Episode 2 whilst she’s falling through the sky is what took me out. I also cannot stand Esther Yu’s cutesy act in and out of a drama. Her purposely using a cutesy act and a cutesy voice irl for everything also turns me away from her 😬 Dylan also seemed like he was done with her when they were promoting the drama on variety shows
/end rant

I hope you’re well, dear friend 💜

Lol, maybe I found the CGI so good because right before starting it I tried a few eps of Love's Rebellion and that was like watching a high school production. So cheesy but not in a good enough way to be considered campy imo. It was a fast drop. Esther Yu's voice did take some getting used to, and I wonder if she was required to keep it up for the promotional events. She didn't talk like that the entire drama. Dylan was terrific. Overall, I think the story is extremely well-crafted, but one does have to like xianxia's to enjoy it 😉

I am doing well! Hope you are too 🤗

lol That’s fair 😅
Oh no, she’s purposely kept up the cutesy act even to this day— I can’t with her. The only time I’ve seen her drop is when she was on a variety show with Dylan (“Hello, Saturday”— wherein Dylan is also a resident MC) and she had THOUGHT cameras weren’t rolling during transition times between games. Little did she realize that she’s wrong. She is harmless for the most part (well, aside from the rumours saying that she was a Mean Girl in her trainee days), but I just can’t get over a girl in her late-20s putting on an act thinking she can utilize it to manipulate people (her costars and coworkers in showbiz, essentially) and manipulate the things around her to make it work out for her and her career. Esther Yu comes from money, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s one step away from asking her rich dad to basically use money to help drive her career. We see it all the time. I</ I have seen it too many times (especially in Hong Kong showbiz and those who have ties to the Hong Kong triad as their backing)

The relationship (and its progression) feels very natural in YAMS, which is why I'm enjoying it so much. Actually, all of the relationships feel like that in this drama. It's a refreshing change from heavy use of tropes, forced situations, and interpersonal dynamics found in most romances.

The OST is also good in LBFAD!

I don’t watch costumes and even I enjoyed the first half of LBFD though I dropped it eventually :) But that’s my own costume drama allergy and not a reflection of the drama.
I like Esther. She and Lusi get a lot of hate for no reason. Yeah, we might not like a certain part of their acting style but that’s them. And it has nothing to do with their personal life. I find both of them very capable and can pull the emotional scenes very well and deliver when it matters.
And yes, the OST was good!!

There are much worse things to complain about when it comes to a lot of trendy actors...

Summer doldrums for kdramas. So, after noting Dramabeans contributors comments on DREAMING OF A FREAKING FAIRY TALE, I picked up IMITATION (2021). This was my happy watch of the week. An impressive cast, especially the two leads Lee Jun-young and Jung Ji-so, and an impressive production. Episodes 9 & 10 are pretty much perfect. This isn't so much a kdrama as an example of craftsmanship (despite the odd titling). IMITATION is what LOVELY RUNNER would have looked like at 12 episodes instead of 16. So, here's hoping FAIRY TALE will end up on an accessible platform. Any Lee Jun-young recommendations welcome!

I'm up to date on SNOW FALL, but find myself confused and may resort to recaps. Still, it's a baffling wonder of a show -- unexpected, gothic, beautiful, trippy.

Ending my week with AMIDST A SNOWSTORM OF LOVE. Leo Wu is eminently watchable in virtually every drama he's graced, and an actor that will continue to grow and reward the viewer. He's just a big, big talent. Also, bonus points, there's The Duke. Hard to believe this promising young actor Wang Xingyue is only 22 years old (and now I'm prepped for THE DOUBLE).

Honestly? IMITATION is so good, if I could rate it, I would give it a 10.5 on a ten point scale and episodes 9 & 10 upwards of that. It's rare for me to watch a drama with no FF. It tackles some pretty serious themes, including industry-wide infantilizing of kpop stars, abuse of the trainee system, and management greed. It's an intelligent story. Also, a pivotal role is played by the actor Chani who also had a key role in UNDER THE QUEEN'S UMBRELLA (and gracefully done). I have no idea why IMITATION isn't better known. Everything it sets out to do, it does so well. Big, big thumbs up from me.

1. Wong Xing Yue is the 2nd ML, not the 1st ML
2. It’s suuuuuuper melo
3. The ending is done well and makes sense but it may not be for everyone

If you want something lighter, then the modern drama First Love with him is nice 😊 He’s the ML in this one, a campus romance

The Auditors - I liked the steadfastness of the external auditor that was brought in this week. I was thoroughly deceived by Kim Ji-hyun's cutting through laser sharp gaze in the previews for last week's episodes and it made me worried for nothing. I won't be against another Kim Ji-hyun cameo if her character is going to piss Se-woong off one last time.

Seo-jin and VP Dae-woong is goals. I really wished the drama gave some focus off Han-soo and diverted it to both of them instead, individually and together.

The complaints about the job description had me going to Google to verify if perhaps it got lost in definition that auditing can be in-company CSI+Batcave but nope, it is not.

Love Andante - I don't think I'm going to go past episode 1. But, it was very patronizing to the NK counterparts. Comparing the depiction of NK in Curtain Call (my reference point to this), Love Andante was stereotypical.
Language wise, for a North Korean, the FL doesn't know how to speak with the NK inflection. She sounds like the regular SKorean coming to the unification programme. It was very distracting because that was one very minute detail that can be used to recognize their differences but there's no difference here at all. The ML on the other hand is one self-absorbed human who had 3 men lifting a piano that had wheels all because he wanted the perfect position. He could have just wheeled it in🤦🏽🤷🏽.

But, I did find very much to my amusement how they got documented as a couple. That epilogue was the best way to wrap it up.

The North Korean program lead guy is my favorite part of this drama.

I'm looking forward to watching the movie Intimate Strangers (2018). I hear it is packed with a stellar cast all bringing their A-game to one setting, a parlor's dining table.

My Friend's Graduation - I heard about this drama some weeks ago and had it saved on my watchlist almost immediately. I finally dug in and 3 episodes in, I'll say this is a good watch for when you're busy doing some cooking or slightly busy. There's not enough happening here. And, the younger ML is insufferable. I'd like to see how he grows up to walk straight, shoulders high, chin upright, instead of bent inwards, defeated even before conflict.

I'm giving Hyena and Find Me In Your Memory a pause. The short stint of Jeong-hoon with his late girlfriend had my attention in such short little time, with me wanting more and I'm left wondering why it is not working with Ha-jin and I want to see their story less.

And, for a character who as we are told high schooled with his late girlfriend and they did a lot of things together post-that time, Ha-jin is portrayed immaturely. Is it because she's a celebrity? Is that why she is portrayed as a teenage idol who stumbled into fame and doesn't want her fans to lose that innocent character they met in high school? I can't for the life of me exchange that maturity that...

Happy Saturday and Qixi Festival, Beanies!
Me: *on my way to catch up with other dramas *
Certain vampire flick:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GUSUkerWgAAw4j9?format=jpg&name=large

You've guessed it right – all my plans to watch more of STRANGE TALES OF TANG DYNASTY 2: TO THE WEST etc went into the window, I had no physical, intellectual nor emotional capacity left for it, unfortunately.

THE ART OF SUBTEXT SNOW FALL: If you expect to be let down, c-writers could never disappoint you. In other words, yes, I've finished the drama fully and have A LOT to say about its overall pros, cons and especially controversial conclusion. But since regular VIP run still hasn't ended, that topic will be talked about next week maybe I'll be more calm and objective then. If you need a friendly advice on the matter, it's OK to stop at 23 episodes and completely ignore the 24th one.

What I DO want to talk about is how this show suffered through multiple censorship “fixes” and had to cut completely, replace/redub or tone down many of its crucial elements – like vampirism AND main love story. Not gonna pretend that all this didn't affect the drama negatively, but I find it very interesting how show got around those limitations by resorting to visual clues, subtlety in language and – thankfully for the production – most actors in it being capable enough to deliver through their performance what was hidden between the lines. Like at one point FL is fatally wounded and ML is forced to throw away his “no biting people” principle by turning her – but outright vamp stuff had to be cut! All of it – biting, blood drinking, fangs whatnot. Show's solution to this dilemma? A suggestive shot of their shadows during a bite and slow mo twirl while floating in the air ala classical vampire horrors. Ann Rice would've 100% approved))) Or how OTP dynamic quietly, but obviously changed around the time of FL's transformation: now they wear a lot of color coordinated outfits, exchange LOADED stares, have constant dramatic dialogs about how much they mean to each other in this oh-so-Victorian passionate yet super elusive and restrained style (“by hitting you, she's also hitting me”), get romantic framing for “casual” scenes (embrace under flower arc – does this remind you of anything?), do traditionally reserved for couples only stuff like bowing to ancestors graves together etc. Compare this delicate, careful portrayal of blossoming relationship with 3ML's blatantly overacted dysfunctional obsession with ML he pretty much screams of in public all the time – or equally desperate 2FL's fixation on said 3ML - and things start to look REALLY funny... All the ships in this show except main one need to be burned with fire, they are hopelessly shallow and ridiculous. Don't even let me start about THAT scene, ewww, I haven't been this grossed out in a while.

Another aspect of subtle storytelling is music. I present you my by now favorite OST this year (kinda feels like a weird claim since there's no LYN in it – major oversight on producers part). Track 1 is simply cool, 3 and 4 are great and so emotional (metal riff in the latter caught me off-guard – didn't think it was a part of actual song when first hearing it in the show, wow!), but personal winner is 2 – these lyrics are EVERYTHING! I just love - and hate - how drama soundtracks often tell the story on a deeper level AND more cohesively than script itself lol, there is some bittersweet magic to it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aagfwIQPRM

Bonus: stylish vampire gentleman appreciation because we deserved more of him, really! Gotta love how good this “too kind and proper to eat even his enemies” dude is at vamping it up when needed – in another story he'd make the most terrifying yet enigmatic villain:
https://x.com/cumber_joonie/status/1820101785391956060
https://x.com/raknongfeimak/status/1819886379238817935
https://x.com/kuchbhi_tweet/status/1820852083576217676
BGM of this one took me out lmao)))
https://x.com/Rainy_night_eri/status/1821782644339691539

Bonus 2: for a while I had this small hobby of looking up characters from names in dramas to see if there's some symbolic meaning to them. FL's simply means flower of orchid kind – super basic for a girl, guess her trash parents didn't bother much with the task (we're later told Mi Lan was born on late November and orchids bloom in SPRING – the contrast with ML gifting her winter camellias!). While ML's name game me a headache during research is likely derived from expression chi zhi yi heng meaning “to persevere”. Talk about being doomed for a tortured hero fate since birth!

“Drama news” segment :

- STRANGE TALES OF TANG DYNASTY 3: TO CHANG'AN was announced to no one's surprise. I suppose it's gonna be the final season and hope it stays good until the very end. Now I just need to finish S2...

- iQiyi's THE NEIGHBORS (Xiao Shunyao, Jia Qing, mystery thriller) suddenly dropped few days ago – I recall there were Beanies interested in it:
https://x.com/ultra_melons/status/1821387058759581728

- Tencent's ARE YOU THE ONE (formerly HIDDEN CHARM, Zhang Wanyi, Wang Churan, historical romance) will air on 12th.

- also Tencent's LOVE IN THE DESERT (Hani Kezi, Fang Yilun, historical romance) continues to tease us with no airing date but new trailer that made my jaw drop – it IS hot there in the desert, YSS is living his best hedonistic life once again lol:

- and iQiyi's LIN JIANG XIAN (Bai Lu, Zeng Shunxi, xianxia romance):
https://x.com/dablcpnk2/status/1820658969465282885

- plus a whole bunch of other dramas with no new promos, which I am in no mood to cover rn, let's wait until they give us something first.

- Tencent's BLOSSOM not this word again! (Meng Ziyi, Li Yunrui, historical romance) got licensed.

- posters galore for Qixi Festival:
https://x.com/ultra_melons/status/1821247817366843831

- once again rumors about THE STORY OF PEARL GIRL airing date, this time in Q4, presumably October. Well, at some point they'll get it right finally))) Feat two more terribly overedited posters under link above (with old English title lol) to once again remind us how utterly lazy and incompetent this PR team is. And short video – a new one! *slow claps*
https://x.com/liu_yuning08/status/1822175878651998339

- society's new fave vampire Gao Weiguang did an interview as a part of SNOW FALL promos, where revealed that his costar in upcoming CICADA GIRL(S) LYN was “easier to flirt with than FL”, make of that what you will *laughs like hyena * Cannot wait for this drama to air and potentially make me root for threesome, because come on, why choosing between these two when you can have both?)))

- ADWAD is still filming – seems like they'll keep going till September at least. New posters and making videos for both main couples teasing some lip action, heh. Idk what FL's doing with that giant bowl and spoon while on his lap - second leads nurse and patient game going well is more obvious - but I fully support both feeding and seduction intent in this case:

Plus a short – Your Highness, stop sulking when on a date with your wife!

Even more goodies – romantic compilation of fanvids because devil works hard, but paparazzi shippers are simply unbeatable:

More Qixi stuff next week, I'm already overwhelmed as it is.

Once again, grateful! Such creativity out there, thank you for capturing and sharing.

SNOW FALL is my very first vampire drama (or book or anything). I like it because it is so trippy and visually arresting. You got to wonder if, upon seeing the script for the first time, Vengo Gao said to himself "I'd pay THEM to let me in." It's an obvious candidate for a Director's Cut future version. Utterly, maddeningly unique.

Really? I know it's a niche genre, but still common enough so that's surprising. I've seen and read quite a few myself, but was never a huge fan beyond aesthetics... until now)))

I wonder if him getting part was a result of fan casting/online survey by production team - from what I understood, his own fans dreamed of him in vampire role for years and were super thrilled when he finally landed it. 100% valid, this case belongs in drama castings hall of fame. Such a wonderfully high class retro visuals and charisma! If he was born in other side of the world, he'd make fantastic Batman/Bruce Wayne, for example. Or any other iconic noir-ish hero.

For obvious reasons I'd prefer more true-to-book cut - PD has my respect for his camera skills, yet not so much storytelling-wise - but getting back all censored stuff would've surely be nice too. Imagine it being even more campy!

I’m keeping with Hidden Charm
After watching Zhang Wan Yi portray an older brother for 62 episodes (but WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN 70 ahhhhhh ahem), I’m not sure I’m ready for this yet, but I actually love the 2 leads so much, even though I’ve only seen them both in one project, respectively— Zhang Wan Yi in Lost You Forever and Wang Chu Ran as FL #2 in The Longest Promise (I can’t believe she’s only 25, like how I still can’t believe that Wang Xing Yue is only 22

STRANGE TALES OF TANG DYNASTY 3: TO CHANG'AN. Yay, to the capital they go. I'm very excited! I hope it'll end with a bang after making me cry at the end of 2.

QUEEN WOO is next for me. I need to retrieve some historical research from my storage. I'm feeling a bit nervous about the show because it has a lot of Chinese influence, which might upset some K-netizens. Hopefully, it doesn't end up like "Joseon Exorcist."

Ngl, I'm legit worried where the plot and overall vibe of the story will go once team is locked up in the the capital right when hell is about to break loose there. It was said that 3quel plans to focus more on "human stories", hmmm...

QUEEN WOO is streaming only show, which may save them from additional scrutiny. Even so, I have no idea why they divided the drama into 2 parts - this whole practice needs to stop, no one wants that!

Uh, human stories would be boring. Why can't they take advantage of what makes this period unique?
I guess that's one reason this production team is playing with fire. CJ Enm has deep pockets. I'm not a fan of these two parts either. It's only eight episodes.

1

@kiara hopefully this means just "less monsters", not necessarily "less weirdness and mystery" - something like Dugu's case in S1, perhaps?

Kdramas get shorter and shorter with each passing year, and yet we're still on that "parts" trend somehow, meh. Next thing you know they'll start to divide episodes in half... AGAIN!

Thanks @gikata for the crime cdrama iQIYI’s THE NEIGHBORS update. I am one of the beanies interested in what’s going on in crime/cops/mystery in cdramaland so I appreciate the info you provide in this area.
I didn’t realize iQIYI’s THE NEIGHBORS (20 eps) had been sprung just a couple of days ago on Aug. 8.

Interestingly my viewing card had just opened up. My only live watch is tvN’s THE AUDITORS which wraps up thus weekend.
I just finished an enjoyable first watch summer rerun of Kim Myung-soo (L)’s 2020/21 KBS sageuk SECRET ROYAL AGENT (Viki US) and I was in the mood for a shortish crime cdrama and discovered that in July iQIYI released an addition to its “Light On” crime series the 15 episode: INTERLACED SCENES.

In INTERLACED SCENES we have a murder investigation led by a middle aged highly respected female detective (played by Ma Yi Li) who take on as her assistant the young newbie male detective (played by Gao Zhi Ting). The young detective is a natural at police work but needs to have his reins held in check at times by his experienced mentor. I like the police/investigator experienced female/inexperienced young male dynamic here. I am four episodes in and enjoying it.

2. MBC’s F/S BLACK OUT (14 eps). Episode one airs this Friday, Aug. 16 and as far as I can tell MBC has still not announced a legal stream for the US.

With C-Dramaland going through a drought of their biggest names (in terms of traffic and engagement) not having any works out for the next little while for various reasons (Xiao Zhan’s drama isn’t due til next year, Yang Zi supposedly only has 1 more drama to air this year (not sure if it’s The Golden Hairpin, Wang Yi Bo’s fanbase has successfully pissed everyone off so he, himself, probably won’t be getting any scripts anytime soon because no one wants to work with him and habe to deal with his fanbase now), I really hope that it means the dramas of other also very talented C-actors and C-actresses will get a fighting chance and will be able to garner sponsors so their dramas can air and not be thrown into the stockpile of unaired dramas and then viewers only get the low-budget cutesy “same thing , different delivery” dramas. I can tell you that I’ve watched 3 Luo Zheng dramas and they’re all basically the same plot but with a different FL actress but he’s not a bad actor at all, so I don’t know why he’s not gaining as much popularity as I think he deserves 😅 Other good C actors/actresses have seemed to made a move to movies as of late. Besides the obvious (XZ’s drama), I’m also finding myself anticipating Under the Skin Season 2, but again, not sure when it’ll air. Other than that, there really isn’t anything of C-Ent. that’s currently got my pressing attention but I’m hoping to be proved wrong for upcoming C-dramas (dang, I should have paid attention during the Big 3 Chinese networks’ industry event this year haha Too late)

I have a loooong list of upcoming c-dramas I'm interested in... and at least 20 of them are "scheduled" for this year (no way I'll be able to watch even half of them). I've actually been wondering how they're all going to be released because it feels like a traffic jam of c-dramas waiting to be set free rn. 🙃

4

@zindigo If they’re not big budget, if they don’t have the bigger names attached (in casting or directing or producing) they’re probably going to be pushed back. If they are the big budget dramas, it’s literally all about if they can get enough sponsors in time so that the networks can squeeze them into their tv airing/online streaming schedules

@gikata, A THE NEIGHBORS (iQIYI) follow up.
I lasted about 10 minutes into episode one and dropped it. Poor subtitles (especially for a crime drama). A female murder victim kept being referred to as ‘he’ by one of the detectives. I thought I won’t be able to take 20 episodes of this.
On the other hand I watched and completed on iQIYI the July released crime drama INTERLACED SCENES (15 eps) which I enjoyed and the subtitles seemed generally fine.

You must finish STRANGE TALES OF TANG DYNASTY 2: TO THE WEST. The title perfectly describes that era.

1

Bad Memory Eraser: It’s beginning to get interesting. I hope the brothers can save each other; they both seem unhappy. (Except the memory-erased one who is right now in some kind of delirious oblivion).

Miss Night and Day: I kept liking this show but my oh my, what a screwed-up ending. I mean, not like the FL died or something, just the most Idiotic Nobility I have seen for a long time. And also, her friend … really?
Signal: I fear this will end up in some transphobic message. I hope not. Otherwise, it’s exciting, and I love Kim Won-hae’s character. I’m a bit surprised I don’t find the ML more exciting – I saw him in Move to Heaven – I guess his charisma has grown significantly with time.
Rewatching:
Itaewon Class: I finished it and made a gif-o-rama, it’s on my wall, and also, link will appear in comments. Including a definitely more silly consent-gif.
Community Rewatch:
Just Between Lovers/Rain and Shine: I put up my little gif-o-ra-mini, link follows in the comments. By now following the rewatch from the sidelines. I love this drama. I have a note on consent, but it’s more a general note, I think. Don’t mistake; This drama is a good one, one that makes you want more like that one.

Not a K-drama:
Delicious in Dungeon: The weirdest cooking show I have ever seen! Like some kind of reality show, but it’s definitely not reality! And detailed recipes and tips on how to best get a crispy surface on golden coin-beetles, and on how to safely discern an edible fantasy monster from an apparently similar, but non-edible one. It’s anime.
Decameron: (New on Netflix) I have seen the first two episodes. They are very funny, but also disgusting, and they promise to develop into a lot of death, starvation, sex, and several degrees of madness. Why, oh why will I have to see this? Because it’s well made and lures me in with comedy, that’s why.

Lots of rom-sit-com's have more "p***" compared to that, just with moving sheets and, as Isak says in S.K.A.M., "Blafrende Gardiner", (Fluttering Curtains).
But there is a lot to be disgusted about, in many ways. In the general ambience of moral decay, including "what to do with bodies", s** is the least of it.

My Sweet Mobster: Finished and it stuck the landing! While I didn't love the show, I really, really enjoyed it and was impressed by how the drama was able to handle the ensemble cast. I liked how the second leads end up being supportive of their main lead romantic rivals. Whoever thought to cast Uhm Tae-goo for this role and to cast Uhm Tae-goo with Sunhwa is a genius.

Doctor Cha (episodes 1-4) Been on my watchlist. I'm liking it a lot so far. I think this really works as a binge since the husband can be so rage-inducing sometimes. I do like how the drama doesn't make the more jerk-y characters completely devoid of feeling and rational thought. And Uhm Jung-hwa is effervescent as the lead.

Dashing Youth (cdrama, up to ep 11): A little bit better. More restraint in the CGI. I hope they really get to travel and go different places, instead of being stuck at the Academy. I'm more interested in the other disciples, particularly the old-married-couple-esque relationship between handsome veiled one and the supposedly-ugly (scoff) one.

Blood of Youth (rewatch up to episode 9): Watching Dashing Youth made me miss Blood of Youth. Wuxin's poem still gives me the chills and really reflected the yearning for adventure, the meeting new people and friends, and the motivation to work hard to improve one's skills that I loved about the series.

Forgot to add that I finished The Double. Love the series but mixed feelings about the ending. There were a lot of fantastic scenes (emotional highlights: Wanning and Yurong's endings, Father Jiang convo with the FL, and the callback to Jiang Li whose quiet courage spurred the FL to live on), but execution of the rebellion and war scenes were head-scratchers that took me out of the drama that has been riveting so far. And of course, leaving the happily ever after moment to a 5 minute extra that you have to dig through the internet to find will never not be one of the most obnoxious things that cdramas do.

My wife truly loved THE DOUBLE but skipped looking for the five minute 'happily ever after'. The story was dramatically complete without it. Think of it as being like ROMAN HOLIDAY (with the great Audrey Hepburn) which also does not have a happily ever after: At the end our lead characters part, never to meet again, yet their story was still both lovely and complete.

I feel like the episode 40 ending was vague and open enough that, without the 5-minute extension, I can also believe he came back to her in the flesh after the years of war it would take to squash the Dai kingdom. But just knowing the extra 5 minutes exists, I just had to watch it! While also side-eying the director for making it...

Nirvana in Fire has been on my to-watch list forever.

In my fangirl opinion, "The DOUBLE" was nowhere near the greatness of NIRVANA IN FIRE in terms of writing, directing, acting, execution, etc.
Almost a decade later, it's still just as unforgettable as the first time it was released. Although a work of fiction, it was confirmed to the mindset of an ancient era. Only a dead man walking would have the guts to tell an emperor that the country doesn't belong to him but to the people. Without the people, there would be no country.

The ambiguous ending did not make any sense as it puts the ML and FM in a bad light. The possible death of the ML indicated that they lost the war and Dai Guo could then invade the capital. As the drama tried to add depth and dimension to the princess, it borrowed from history to describe her suffering in Dai. However, by doing that, viewers were reminded of that era in the Song dynastry when the King and most of the court negotiated with Jin and lost half of the country while the well known hero Yue Fe who fought Jin was summoned back to the court and killed. A bad ending for the drama made many viewers think that the ML put his vengence over the welfare of the country.

That's why I assumed the ML survived in the ambiguous ending, since the alternative would have been that they've lost the war and the whole super recent usurpation battle would have felt sort of a pointless for the king and ML. Also, I couldn't help but feel how risky it is for cdrama fictional kingdoms to have like at-most 2 superstar generals. They need to work on their human resources and recruitment.

1

Required fields are marked *

You think that was a dumb waste of human resources? Ha! In early this year's ETERNAL BROTHERHOOD country's ruler initially had 5 star generals and at the end of season1: got 2 of them killed, other 2 essentially sent to the frontlines to die and remaining 1 surrounded by manufactured mortal enemies within the court that will 100% get him dead too sooner or later. All of this while having an ongoing war with like 2-3 neighboring nations at once. Brilliant strategy thinking, right?)))

1

It kind of felt like the last episode of the Double was hastily shoved together from parts that were meant to be much more early on in the series. There were supposed to be emotional heightened character related moments in the battle that had no emotional resonance to me at all because it all felt vaguely thrown together with no real care. The drama itself was hugely enjoyable and a lot of it's delightfulness came from massive coincidences throwing the fl and ml together in their paths, but they were well executed emotionally and got time to percolate so I didn't care that they were coincidences, they were still smartly done. Most of the last episode was not smart, and I did not understand the reasoning behind everything that they chose to do in the last episode after the main happy ending early in it.

I still enjoyed the rest of it but too many dramas really need to figure out some of their last episode writing issues.

This past week was devoted to the Olympics, with a re-watch of BUSINESS PROPOSAL thrown in. My wife did get in a watch of a Pre-Joseon Sageuk movie THE GREAT BATTLE, set in the year 645 AD: A small garrison of Goguryeo soldiers held off a massive Tang army in the Siege of Ansi, which lasted for 88 days. Sadly, only twenty-three years later Goguryeo would fall to a combination of Tang and Silla forces, ending Korea’s only experience as a true Great Power.

I will be glued to the TV for tonight’s premiere of ROMANCE IN THE HOUSE (Netflix) while next week will bring us DNA LOVER (Viki) and LOVE NEXT DOOR (Netflix) while also hoping to see the next episode of THE GOOD PARTNER soon. I am looking forward to all of these shows.

The weekender BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC returns tonight, starting a new chapter in this story. I am hoping for an upward trajectory from here. The next weekender will only be thirty-six episodes long. This is probably a good thing. All K-dramas having been shrinking in length from even regular dramas once being twenty or twenty-four episodes to now sixteen or twelve or even less.

Watching, with various degrees of non-enthusiasm: Serendipity's Embrace, Tale of the Nine-tailed, the Princess Royal (C-drama). Still have the last three episodes of Midnight Romance in Hagwon to watch.

Binged: I Need Romance 3. I heard this was the best of the series, and watched it relatively painlessly on Tubi. The 16 episodes were relatively short by today's standards, with enough different plot lines and character arcs to keep it going. It was made in 2014, and shows its age, moreso than the similarly themed 2013 I Can Hear Your Voice. A younger man relentlessly pursues an idealized older woman, whom he now realizes has feet of clay. The problem is that Shin Joo-yeon is, like Jane Austen's Emma, a character that only her creator could love, minus Emma's redeeming traits. She is so unpleasant that her now grown childhood admirer, when pressed to explain why he likes her, can only say that love has no reason, it just is. Well pfft! to that. It's easy to see why he adored her in childhood, with her endless patience, care, and warm guidance, but difficult to connect that character with the borderline sociopath she's become. And blaming that on nine years of being Namgoong Min's underling is unconvincing. I like Min, but he really doesn't do a lot here, aside from looking pleasant and occasionally hurt.

Kim So-yeon doesn't have the range to suggest deeper levels or trauma to explain her character. She's pretty, but her always perfect and unchanging eyeliner and lipstick were grating on me by the end. Her nemesis, played by Wang Ji-won, was a much more fun and interesting character, with a better (and largely unrepentant) arc. There are also the love-seeking journeys of her two work "friends", with pertinent commentary on some of the issues women have in modern Korean society, mostly economic but also ageism and the difficulties of having children.

So why, you ask, did I watch this in two days? I was intrigued and surprised by the amount of passionate kissing and sex in just the first few episodes. Modern dramas are much more coy, which may work for character development, but isn't as much fun. But mostly it was for a 24 year old Sung Hoon, long and lanky and exuding sexiness. His character is almost too perfect, but redeemed by his common sense, moral compass, sense of humour, and willingness to scold Joo-yeon as often and strongly as required (more echoes of Emma). Kim So-yeon is at her most believable when mooning over his muscular forearms, thighs, and torso. Not to mention his delightfully unruly hair, smouldering eyes, and lips constantly on the edge of a smirk. It's just hard to buy that after sharing a delightful day at the ocean and a *ahem* very passionate kiss, she would instantly lose interest in him after discovering he was her childhood caretaking burden "Sweet Potato." It also begs belief that she would have absolutely no residual fondness for a child she apparently lovingly helped raise from birth to age...

Oops, ran out of space.

...from birth to age nine. Like I said, borderline sociopath.

Movie: Mission Cross, on Netflix, about a married couple, the wife a detective, her husband, unbeknownst to her, a retired super intelligence agent. Which apparently equips him to be the perfect spouse and school bus driver. The Japanese series about a retired Yakuza house husband is better, but this is light, forgettable fun.

Want to watch: A number of the upcoming kdramas, but also The Double and Snowfall. I've been rewatching snippets of Till the End of the Moon on YouTube, and am in the mood for twisty, bonkers, super romantic dramas.

I’m currently taking my time with Til the End of the Moon, which btw, the 2nd ML for it is the ML in LYF 🤌🏻🤌🏻😍😍😍 And now I luff him and watching “…. Moon” for him, because I haven’t been feeling it for Luo Yun Xi dramas for a while now 🥹🥹🥹

Is It Serendipity: I have no idea how they are going to finish this show in two episodes.
Love Andante (dropped): NO.
Bad Memory Eraser (dropped): this was so triggering because crappy psychiatrists like this FL actually exist in RL.
The 8 Show (Finished): I told my bestie I didn't want to watch the other Planet of Apes movies (the first one was enough for me), so she made me finish this... Some webtoons should stay webtoons. The stories only work because of that format.
At least I earned a bean.

I'm trying to watch Knight Flower and rewatch He's Psychometric but I'm not in the mood for that. I just want something good on air right now.
I also watched the documentaries Kokomo City, Paris is Burning, and Black Panthers. After BP I wanted to watch more of Agnès Varda, but MUBI is taking all her movies down today (at least from my region). LOL

I'm excited to watch Fresh of the Sea episode 4. This is the only program I enjoy right now. And I really hope there is romance in that house. Upcoming shows DO NOT DISAPPOINT.

I finished Miss Night and Day. I thoroughly enjoyed this show right up until the final week, when I...sort of liked it OK. The ending was just so weak. They had a concept to allow them to enjoy the amazing talents of Lee Jung-eun, and that's pretty much what I liked about the show. None of the plot elements made sense, but the actors were very cute. But then I had no new shows left to watch! I finished my rewatch of Alchemy of Souls. I didn't remember that the show had such a strong structure. I think one character played by two actors worked surprisingly well here! But the ending was a lot weaker than I remembered.

OK, so, everyone on this site seemed to love My Sweet Mobster so I watched a bunch of episodes of that while making dinner this week. It's great! I do detect some inconsistency in the writing of the leading male character, but it has not spoiled my pleasure in the show so far. I'm midway through episode 11. I assume that as usual, episode 16 will be stupid. If not, I will be sure to praise the thing to the skies!

I want to have a conversation about terrible endings, silly endings, flaccidly written endings, and dramas with EXCELLENT endings. I can only think of two where the ending was actually good.

Required fields are marked *

I think I've never thought of excellent endings. If a show has a proper ending it translates to "the show was good". But I don't particularly remember an ending because I liked it too much (maybe with movies with plot twists?).

I remember them if they're really emotional (for ex. LFiSand, Reply88, and I cried so hard with Black's ending that my mom got scared), but it wasn't about it being brilliant or anything.

However bad endings are easier to remember because usually you got to that point because the show was good until then, so you tend to say the ending ruined everything. Like "it's a good show with a bad ending." For ex, many people seem to feel that way about shows like Gu FB, Heartbeat or DDSSLLSol. Or the way I feel about shows like Oh My Ghostess (I never rewatch the ending of that drama).

Maybe my memory is the one failing me rn, but I really don't remember any particular ending that got stuck in me head because of how amazing it was. 🤔 What are the two endings that you liked?

I only watched DDSSLLSoL and Oh My Ghostess. The former had one of the worst endings of any media in any genre ever. I don't even remember the ending of Oh My Ghostess. Wait, doesn't she nonsensically go to Europe to study? It was quite weak, yes, but it didn't totally ruin the show.

I was thinking about the ending of My Mister because I was recommending that someone just watch the ending for the feels. I realized that even the very last episode had enough dramatic tension to carry the resolution of all the narrative threads. In fact there were several important and memorable scenes in episode 16.

Another one that I liked was The Glory. Now, I am not saying that I approved of the way each thread was resolved--I just feel like the last episode should have something actually happen in it. It shouldn't feel like the scriptwriters need to come up with something to prolong the agony.

I'm kind of unsure how I feel about Our Beloved Summer, for example. It's true that for some reason, one of them had to study in Europe while the other one had to stay home, just at the moment when they'd resolved their misunderstanding after literal years! But, sensibly, they communicated by phone and email and sensibly, he flew back to Korea to see her in the middle of the year. Also there was some narrative sense to his need to prove he could leave home and feel secure.

I don't remember if she went somewhere. I don't like the ending because of the couple itself. They felt too forced, imo.

Tbh, I don't mind if someone goes to study or work overseas at the end unless it's totally random. But if they talk about the main character's dream of going to X place to learn Y, I'm actually glad the show it and don't make the romance get in the way (because that wouldn't be realistic imo). Instead, it shows that their partner is supportive. I like that.
The only thing I don't get is when chaebols wait patiently for a year, instead of calling their private jet to go visit their girlfriends every couple of months or something.

"I just feel like the last episode should have something actually happen in it."

I think I get what you mean. Some final episodes feel more like filler than a proper episode.
I think I usually feel more satisfied with the ending of dramas from other genres than romcoms. Like horror, drama or crime shows.
The impact is totally different and make the endings worth remembering.

You're right. It's specifically romcoms and the demands of the happy ending that apparently short out the writers' brains.

I'm not sure why the couple at the end of Oh My Ghost (Ghostess?) felt forced though. Both the medium and the ghost girl were in love with the chef through the whole thing. Maybe it's the actor? I like him but I also think he's outgrown some of the acting charming he did in that show.

1

It's because the ghost is too much Soon Ae, the ghost; even the romance. She pretty much carried the whole relationship for the three of them, but the show moved on from her too easily at the end.
I just wasn't able to feel connected to the endgame. They felt off.

Waiting eagerly for Love next Door!!! and possibly will try out Romance in the House after some initial reviews.

Just finished watching Be Melodramatic and loved it. All three leads were fun and charming and I liked that they all felt real and complex, not just perfect, and their friendship scenes were so, so good. Jeon Yeo Been and Chun Woo Hee are two of the most gorgeous women and it's such an amazing thing that their acting is also perfect. Since I missed the real time discussions, just plopping this down here, I loved how different they both were and how much i adored their completely different storylines as well as when they came together. The drama managed to be both incredibly moving and amazingly hilarious, while still feeling real. I also quite enjoyed Han Joo having a cute platonic relationship with Jae Hoon but still getting a cute young guy as her paramour. My only gripe was the unbelievably draggy waste of screen time on Jae Hoon and his gf, she was awful, I disliked how much we saw of them and I didn't quite understand Han Joo's summation of his faults in the relationship given that she and we just saw the gf being borderline abusive, but since I disliked both bf and gf whenever I saw them together, I will assume their coupledom belonged to a different much less enjoyable drama. The rest of it was perfect.

Currently watching From Now On, Showtime, and it's charming and funny. I found Jin Ki Joo cute enough in the secret life of my secretary drama, but she positively sparks here, she's super fun and Park hae Jin's face is the perfect complement.

From Now On, Showtime! was such a lovely fantasy rom-com! I hope you continue to enjoy it! I just loved the warmth of the story of their relationship and the stories of the ghosts. Jin Ki-joo and Park Hae-jin were such fun together; Park Hae-jin is so much fun when he does physical comedy and looks like a (handsome) grumpy stork 😂

Handsome grumpy stork is such an accurate description XD Their chemistry is so fun! The annoying bits of his character go well with the humor, and because she's such a fun go-getter, I enjoy that it doesn't feel like cliched obnoxious rich guy with (very very hidden) heart of gold paired with sweet little ingenue, but instead they're actual fun same level partners in their unique adventures, just with different personalities.

SERENDIPITY'S EMBRACE: The only thing I'm fully sure how I feel about this drama is how much I love Sang Pil and the uncle. I am not liking the FL so much and the drama which is now unfolding with the mother had probably made me drop the drama had the show consisted of more episodes than 8. But I will earn this bean.

PRINCESS ROYAL (EP18): The budget for this drama may be low but the scriptwriter is gold for the portraying of relationships and pacing.

SNOW FALL (ep13): Vengo as a vampire is so satisfying and I love the clever FL. The villains not so much. But it's a fun ride, if not one I'll remember come December.

BUSINESS MARRIAGE: In the start of the drama I was so upset with the fact that the leads never thoroughly discussed their contract but had they in the first place, there would be no drama as the premise of a strictly business marriage but with the inclusion of kisses and sex being nonsense. But this is also how their deal came to fall apart and the show being honest to us viewers about this is a least plausible and I am thus looking forward to the show's conclusion next week.

MY HAPPY MARRIAGE: A friend gave me a tip of this anime and I sort of liked it, at least the first half. The second half had some painful pacing issues which called for a second season.

DREAMING OF A FREAKING FAIRYTALE: Holy moly, I loved this! Not only was it zany and sexy but Lee Jun-young throwing his dignity to the winds is unbelievably hot. I wish more dramas with freaking adults having freaking adult feelings would be more frequently featured in Kdramaland.

I like how they completely ran with the concept. Yes, she was a total candy and he threw his cheabolness in everybody's faces. They sported such great self-esteem. The only thing I didn't understand was how such a comfortable and devil-may-care person as Cha-min could throw his lot in with a gangster's daughter, it didn't fit his character.

Not watching anything live at the moment, having paused The Auditors for now.

Looking forward to the next BIG batch: Love Next Door, Romance In The House and Good Partner (which I want to start when resuming after Olympics). But, but I’ll be travelling to Scandinavia for a month - not sure how my usual watching platforms will work.

And did you know that Uhm Tae-goo was a rooftop dweller with 24 months rent behind at one point: https://mydramalist.com/article/my-sweet-mobster-actor-uhm-tae-goo-on-challenges-he-faced-while-filming-his-tough-past-more. Not a post about what I'm watching, but related to what I've been reading on this www thread.

Wondering if there's a @db-staff view on ad hominem comments on the site - either in comments sections or the fanwall?

There are many variants of this visible. The common or garden variety is usually from the rabid, crazed, obsessive fan in the form of an anonymous bot-like commenter who will go out of their way to defend their favourite actor. But there are also variants, where commenters will do their best to put down actors whom they don't 'stan' through comments that are personal attacks. These, IMHO, are basically unverified, gossipy, and downright vitriolic comments on things that have nothing to do with their acting or on-screen lives.

Ordinarily, I'd imagine beanies are expected to self-moderate. But is there a community method to resolve this? Can a stop button be hit when this gets out of hand?

I know DB editors tend to be reticent about such things, but would be curious to know your views. Also, always appreciate the thoughts and views of other beanies on this.

I binged Cheese in the Trap this week. I had never watched it due to all the negative impressions I had about it from reviews. HOWEVER, I thought it was fantastic from beginning to end, with great acting. Story of a college woman finding love with a damaged man, navigating friendships and college life was very well done. The main character had to deal with stalking, date rape situations, false and needy friends, being pushed into oncoming traffic and a three year time skip in the last episode. Lots of drama, lots of feels. I highly recommend.

Still loving 'The Auditors', with extra love for the tropey cliffhanger ending of episode 11. No accountancy melodrama is complete without that particular scene (cf. 'Numbers'). As someone who works in an office, any office drama involving high-stake action scenes and unrealistic use of spreadsheets accompanied by an over-the-top rock soundtrack is pure catnip to me.

Other than that, k-dramaland is a bit of a desert for me right now. Dropped 'Bad Memory Eraser' after ten minutes, and dropped 'Romance in the House' after one episode. Not my cup of tea.

Still loving 'Snow Fall'. It's just hugely, entertainingly bats (appropriately enough for a vampire drama). But I probably will not be watching the final episode, because that's my policy with C-dramas these days: do not watch the final episode. (Unless the writer has informed us from the start that the male lead is poisoned and slowly dying, and our hearts are prepared...)

Finished a re-watch of 'The Story of Minglan', my all time favourite Chinese drama after 'Nirvana in Fire'. The sheer nuanced depth of the characters - all the characters - no matter how minor, is just brilliant. Mr Sheng in particular is a character worthy of a Jane Austen novel.

Have now started a re-watch of 'Mysterious Lotus Casebook'. The cases are very silly, but the bickering three-way relationship between the male leads is just so much fun.

Long time no see! I've not been much in the drama sphere for awhile as I've been so focused on other things in life (health, fitness, work, and going back to school). But I have almost managed to finish my 2nd drama of the year! Yes I've only managed to complete 1 drama so far this year which was The Double. But my 2nd drama will be Lost You Forever. I have 2 eps left! I actually binged all of S1 and S2 together. I didn't want to wait a year between S1 and S2. I had actually read the first half of this book a couple years ago but ended up dropping it (around ep 25 of S1) as I didn't really like the writing style. For the drama I did really like S1 but really slowed down in my watch of S2. I still like it for the most part but S2 I don't feel is as good as S1. All the actors do a wonderful job, especially Yang Zi who is always wonderful. I also have loved Tan Jian Ci since Under The Skin and he is sooo pretty in this with his white hair 😍 If anyone knows me they know I love boys with white flowy costume hair!! Anyways I will finish this today! I actually have never been spoiled who she ends up with but have been about 90% sure who it was since the beginning when I read the book. Tbh I actually don't care who she ends up with as I don't like any of the 3 as a choice. I choose single life for her! I can't see her with Xuan as she has never seen him as anything but a brother. Jing is sweet but he is useless and so incredibly boring as a character. Xiang Liu is swoony but he is also an abusive walking red flag so immediate pass on that. If I had to choose I'd choose Jing for her because atleast he is nice and would be sweet to her. Anyways, guess I'll see how the drama ends in 2 more eps! Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and week ahead! 💕

I always felt Zhao Yao was very clear on what she wanted in a man from the start and only one of these men provided this for her so while I (and the rest of the fandom) in secret wanted her to choose someone else, I never felt there was any question to the 'who', as much as the 'how'.

I've missed DB! Here's what my drama list looks like.

K-dramas:
Miss Night and Day: I made it through 8 episodes before skipping to the finale (pats myself on the back). I will wait for another Choi Jin-hyuk drama to enjoy.

Serendipity's Embrace: I squealed at first, but then my excitement faded. I'm not sure what happened. I probably should have waited for the drama to finish before starting it. Also, I think I prefer to see Potato Boy in cheery roles. He has such a pretty smiling face.

Dramaland, give me good ones this fall!

C-drama:
You Are My Secret: SUPER SCREEEEEEEE! The leads are so <3 I love how the storyline is progressing. Miles clearly has become an expert in contract relationships (my weakness!) I'm caught up until Episode 18. Need more. Who do I bribe for advanced episodes? 😆

I'm up for romcom recos, the fluffier, the better! Let me scroll through everyone's watchlist.

Sweet Home 2: I've read the complaints (Song Kang missing for half the season, the military focus, the annoying new residents), but I had to watch Season 2 so I can watch Season 3 for the return of my favorite character Lee Do-hyun, so I had no expectations. It was a choice to make Eun-yoo the main character this season when everybody hated her character in Season 1. I know Eun-hyuk's death was supposed to be her character development, but I couldn't sympathize with her every time she got in danger. Why the heck did she think the person who saves her was her oppa when she saw Hyun-soo's wing during his fight against Eui-myung and Du-shik ajusshi's sacrifice? Chan-young was too goody two shoes that it was unrealistic. Did he like Eun-yoo, and if so, why? Kim Mu-yeol and the soldiers were hot, but there were so many of them that I couldn't remember all their names. What happened to the baby monster who tried to save Yi-kyung from the fire? That scene was very touching even after she tried to kill him. I'm heartbroken the show killed off my girl Ji-soo.

Serendipity's Embrace: This is the second Chae Jong-hyeop drama in a row where I've disliked Chae Jong-hyeop. I hate people who won't take no for an answer. Hong-joo was clearly uncomfortable around Hoo-young, yet to have her two best friends and his uncle force them together is so burdensome. Did she really forget about the night they spent in the water pit because Hoo-young is the reason for her career? Unlike her narcissistic ex who believes it's because of his novel. Jun-ho's drunk text messages were gaslighting. Hye-ji's dad, manse!!

I really want to finish My Sweet Mobster before Love Next Door premieres next weekend, but why is it 16 episodes instead of 12? At least the Olympics are over, which has been occupying all my time.

carefully avoiding all mentions of *Miss Night & Day* so I don’t see spoilers.

I am struggling finding dramas to watch.

Serendipity’s Embrace: Something about it is just off for me, maybe it’s the 2nd ML, or just the pacing. I was really excited for this one but I have just put it on hold until I know the end is worth it even with the short episodes.

Miss Night and Day: I finished and I really did like it, however something also near the end didn’t make me want to recommend as much as others. Perhaps just the way it dragged on the 2nd to last episode or just the way they wrapped up the murder mystery I was left wishing it was done differently.

Now there are some short Cdramas I started watching but also I am not raving about them they just are an entertaining watch, but I have just been feeling the drama slump so hard lately.

Cannot wait for Love Next Door though hoping this will help me get my enthusiasm back.

Do you like J dramas? Depending on your genre preferences there are a few slice of life dramas out at the moment that I am really enjoying and came highly recommended by other beanies.

Tiger with wings fictionalised 15 min week day daily drama based on Japan’s first women in law.

Umi no Hajimari a man finds out at the funeral of his ex from college had their baby after she told him she had had an abortion and broke up with him. He meets his 7 year old daughter at the funeral. It is a delightful live watch.

366 days is one I discovered myself and is about a group of adults who were close school friends, two members of the group discover they have been hiding their love from each other unnecessarily when they reconnect as adults 10 years later. On the way to their first date the male lead has an accident that leaves him in a coma and the drama shows what happens to the relationship, friends and family over a period of 366 days.

Still ffing my way through SnowFall and starting back in to Alone.
