News bites: August 24, 2024

  • All hail prince Lee Soo-hyuk (Tomorrow) in the newest stills for the upcoming Queen Woo and though he’ll be competing for the Goguryeo throne, I’m putting in my vote for the mane of glory crown in 2024. With Jeon Jong-seo (Wedding Impossible) as our title character, alongside Ji Chang-wook (Welcome to Samdal-ri) and Kim Mu-yeol (No Way Out – The Roulette) among other talents, Part 1 of the sageuk launches next week on August 29, followed by Part 2 on September 12. [News1]

  • Casting continues for KBS’s 2024 Drama Specials with Kang Mina (Welcome to Samdal-ri), Choi Lee (Red Heart), and Ha Joon (Live Your Own Life) reportedly starring in the short drama Young-bok, Sachiko (romanized title). I’m already worried for our heroine, though, who is searching for her husband in the year before the Korean War and in a little village located along what is now the North and South border. [iZE]

  • In happier news, ENA announced that a sequel is in the works for the action-comedy Crash. Picking things up from where we left off at the end of season one, our TCI (Traffic Crime Investigation) team will be getting an upgrade. But though the cast has not yet been confirmed, rest assured production will continue to be steered by the first season’s PD Park Joon-woo (Taxi Driver) and writer Oh Soo-jin. [Osen]
  • Speaking of second seasons, it has been reported that Netflix’s Gyeongseong Creature 2 is planning to release on September 27 next month. With Park Seo-joon (Itaewon Class) and Han So-hee (Soundtrack #1) transporting us from 1945 to present day, the new season’s story continues with Lee Moo-saeng (Blood Free) and Bae Hyun-sung (Miraculous Brothers) joining the cast. [Star News (1)(2)]

  • It’s been nearly 20 years since the 2005 series My Name Is Kim Sam-soon made tidal waves in the drama sphere and Wavve is bringing her back, re-edited and re-mastered for 2024. Giving us a sneak peek with a poster and teaser combo, our ever beloved Kim Sun-ah (Queen of the Mask) and a fresh-faced Hyun Bin (Crash Landing on You) will be returning to our screens on September 6. [SBS]
  • Over on tvN, the first script reading stills have dropped for the webtoon adaptation and period drama Jeongnyeon – The Star Is Born. Slated to premiere on October 12 following Love Next Door in the weekend slot, the series stars Kim Tae-ri (Revenant), Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse), and Ra Mi-ran (Cold Blooded Intern), in addition to special guest appearances by Moon Sori (Race) and Lee Deok-hwa (Stealer: The Treasure Keeper). I won't be tuning in for Queen Woo, but Lee Soo-hyuk looks realllllly good in his "mad, bad, and dangerous to know" vibes 🔥

My Name is Kim Sam-soon is one of the classics I've never gotten around to watching yet; maybe the "remastered" version will be the time to go for it!

This won't mean much, but by the second half of Sam Soon, I was hate watching. Back when I fully watched all dramas. I still get angry thinking about it. SMH

1. The glorious Prince Lee Soo-hyuk looks lovely enough in the above pics but what pique my interest the most this show is the Queen Woo and the actress helming the title character. I like her enough in Ballerina and Wedding Impossible, and I hope she nail it in this drama too.

2. Meanwhile, Young-bok, Sachiko 's plot reminds me of Ha Ji won's character, Ja Geum Soon, in Curtain Call, who was separated from his husband and son while fleeing for to the south. Kang Mina is a joy in Cafe Minamdang, Moonshine and Welcome to Samdalri and this is going to be my first time seeing her in a lead role (I think this is her 2nd lead role in a short drama). The drama is said will also feature Ha Jun.

3. I am too happy that Crash gets it 2nd season. Hopefully our TCI team return with the same cast.

4. Enough with season 1 and I'm not going to watch GC season 2.

I had the pleasure watching My Name Is Kim Sam-soon during those era but I don't think I have enough time for the remastered version coz I have a very long list of current Kdrama to watch 😂. I'm just going to wait and read what Beanies will say about it 🤭

I wonder who the target audience is for this as I suspect the people who saw the original will want to stick with the memories as it fitted with their lived context then. New K-drama fans may not appreciate it in the same way compared to the modern stories, tropes, actors, fashion etc. I have heard so much about it that I am tempted to give it a try because I was put off by the film quality which often prevents an enjoyable watch let alone all the other elements that date dramas from that era.

The film quality of MNKSS is good, compared to many others in the same era.
Korean broadcasters, at least MBC, have standard programming to replay old popular series in a shortened version like under a few hours with guest commentaries. It’s apparent popular for audience to re-acquaint with their favourites. Not sure if new audience is gained though.
This come up every now and then in my YT feeds. I’d watch it if they are the dramas I like.

Cool, I can't wait to know your thoughts about this classic show. It was one of the highest rated Korean drama in those days and of all time, also a drama every Hyun Bin's true fan needs to see 🤭

One of the main storylines revolves around Kim Sam-Soon’s size and Kim Sun-A purposely gained weight for the role. What some of us consider as average size can be thought as overweight 20 years ago in South Korea. Since then, not enough has changed when it comes to the unrealistic and double standards put on women and their appearance.

Chingu, while watching it, have fun figuring out about the whereabouts of the show's actors today. You will be surprised that one of them was a regular in US's fame Criminal Minds.

As it was my first Kdrama, I wasn’t used to how Korean ML should look like or I had a different standard for handsomeness. So, Hyun Bin was jarring to me not to mention his character is a tsundari. Somewhere after the half way mark, I started to appreciate his - or the Korean brand of good looking man. But purely on look, the 2FL and 2ML (Jung Ryeo-won and Daniel Henry win all the way). Nevertheless, Kim Sam Soon as a woman chasing her dream without wanting to compromise (too much) is the heart and soul of this drama.

Now, this is what you call evil! Lee Soo-hyuk sure looks good in that mane of glory and with the evil look. I have more reasons to watch Queen Woo now!

1. I'll give this a shot, but also... even more stuff to watch in the weekend? As if I didn't have enough shows to watch already.

3. Was hoping for a second season after S1 was a success, so I'm really happy about this. Hopefully they get the entire cast back.

4. I watched part 1 of S1, but I never watched part 2, mostly because part 1 was rather disappointing. And I'm still debating whether or not to continue.

6. Can we just skip September and go straight to October?

Am I the only one thinking don’t announce a season 2 until the main cast have been confirmed. Season two without key characters becomes the drama Hospital playlist: Next generation, same hospital chain but different site so then when you can bring in new characters nobody will care. Crash worked because we loved the team as they grew together and fought the system. Bringing in too many new faces will be Crashlite.

Yes, the Crash team they are so good together and I hope they stay together with no extra new faces in the team or missing one of them. Hopefully they can stick to the original like Taxi Drivers series.

It was such a fun to watch drama even though it was covering some serious issues. It felt like it ended part way through the story with that issue about the limousine taxi case and the dodgy newly appointed senior officer. I wish they would film it all in one and then release it with no breaks. I am sure it was one of the shorter series so if they were going to do this they may as well have stuck to 16 episodes and completed it.

1) I hope he won't replay his role in The Scholar who Walks the Night but a more subtile one.

2) Not sure about the actors.

3) Lee Min-ki serie as a cop continues.

5) I wonder if people will be interested.

6) It looks like a good production.

6) Right? With the star-studded cast list (Shin Ye-Eun, Ra Mi-Ran, Jung Eun-Chae, and Kim Yoon-Hye). I think nothing will go wrong with Kim Tae ri as the lead. Furthermore, Moon So-Ri will make a special guest appearance.

1 - ah, this is gonna be our collective "rooting for the Empire" drama, isn't it? Maybe just mine))) Btw, is there no Yeonsan-gun dramas/movies in making atm? Because I think we have a great candidate for a main role here.

2 - sounds interesting, if super angsty. But to get those specials subbed is such a hassle(((

Han Jeong-eun (Wavve chief marketing officer) on Wavve's New Classic project:
- "There are series that came close to being remade, but didn't, such as 'Coffee Prince,' 'Boys Over Flowers' and 'Princess Hours,' for reasons including controversies involving the celebrities who starred in them, or the news that they would be remade from scratch," she said.
- "If this year’s project succeeds, I personally hope to create a special focusing on Kim Eun-sook," Han added. Kim is the renowned screenwriter behind hits such as "Secret Garden" and "Descendants of the Sun".

I'm all here for a Kim Eun-Sook special, because she wrote some of the best dramas out there, but Secret Garden is not one of them.

Kim Sam Soon is my first ever Kdrama back in 2005. It surely has a special place in my heart and KSS as wonderfully played by Kim Sun-ah continues to be a favourite female character - perhaps not with a comparable peer yet.

So, I’ll definitely check out the re-editing version and hope it’d be a great experience.

I started watching K-Dramas in 2012 and I simply can't remember if Coffee Prince or My Name Is Kim Sam-soon was my first drama. I think it must have been Coffee Prince because I love gender bender, and this was probably why I found it in the first place.

Lee Soo-hyuk sure has my interest, even if the drama is a pass for me. 😂

I would definitely like to check out Gyeongseong Creature 2. If not for anything else, at least the wardrobe. 😍

I have mixed feelings about remastered classics. Just hope they don't edit it too heavily to suit modern sensibilities. It may lose its charm if that happens. 😅
