News bites: July 18, 2024

  • It’s only the first posters and Coupang Play’s What Comes After Love already has me sat with my tissues for our longing leads, Lee Se-young (The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract) and Sakaguchi Kentaro (Dr. Chocolate). Also starring Hong Jong-hyun (Race) and Nakamura Anne (Aoshima-kun wa Ijiwaru), it’s going to be a warm and moody autumn with the cross-cultural romance premiering on September 27. [MBC]

  • Casting news continues for KBS’s weekender Iron Family with Geum Sae-rok (Soundtrack #2) confirmed as the daughter of our title’s dry cleaners household, acting opposite Kim Jung-hyun (Kokdu: Season of Deity). The series is set to launch this September with scripts by Seo Sook-hyang (Greasy Melo, Jealousy Incarnate) and PD Sung Joon-hae (Bravo My Life) directing. [KBS]
  • In the meantime, Disney+ will be taking us to the shadowy sci-fi world of The Tyrant, introducing us to our main players in new character posters and the accompanying trailer. Coming to our screens on August 14 next month, the 4-episode spin-off stars Cha Seung-won (Our Blues), Kim Sun-ho (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha), Kim Kang-woo (Wonderful World), and Jo Yoon-soo (The Interest of Love). [News1]

  • Hyeri (May I Help You) joins the latest string of actors donning a high school uniform, starring in the mystery-thriller Friendly Rivalry (previously Friendly Competition). Based on the same titled webtoon, Hyeri will be playing the school’s shrewd, rich kid who develops a special interest in the new transfer student. Both directing and scripts is being led by filmmaker Kim Tae-hee (Misaeng: Prequel), together with co-writing by Min Ye-ji. [Newsis]
  • Lee Joo-myung (Like Flowers in the Sand) is reviewing an offer for the new series My Youth, potentially joining Song Joong-ki (Reborn Rich) and Chun Woo-hee (The Atypical Family) in the lineup. The melodrama has PD Lee Sang-yub (Yumi’s Cells, Familiar Wife) at the helm with writing by Park Shi-hyun (Run On). [Hankyung, Xports News]
  • Over on JTBC, the promos continue for Romance in the House with stills from the drama’s first script reading along with a new poster. Airing in the weekend slot starting on August 10, the story follows our banished hero Ji Jin-hee (D.P. 2) as he tries to make amends with his estranged family and wife Kim Ji-soo (High Class). 1. Is Lee Se-young determined to drain my tissue stock come September.
PPS: Those shots are well captured. They evoked that emotion to feel. Something to anticipate yet feels so dreary at the same time.

I like those posters with Lee Se Young and Kentaro. It depends if I will be in a mood for this but its on my list.

I am waiting patiently for The Tyrant. While I hope Iron Family is good for KJH's sake.

1. Oh, this is gonna hurt. Not that that will stop me from watching, so hopefully this is good.

4. Sounds interesting. Wasn't this also described as a GL at one point? Not that I'm expecting Korea to deliver on that front, but like, it wouldn't even be the first time this year where they would remove those elements in the adaptation and then hope nobody would notice.

5. Was hoping Lee Joo-myung would get more lead roles after Like Flowers In Sand, but guess I'll have to settle for secondary lead.

6. This sounds interesting, and since I currently don't have a lot of weekly shows, I might give it a chance.

1. I'm already intrigued by Lee Se-young's emotions. This feels melancholic. Cross-cultural explorations are rich and have a way of peeling back all the layers. Looking forward to this one.

What comes after love and Romance in the house are the two calling my name. Looking forward to dramas and then feeling gutted when they finally drop is so disappointing. I hope that this time round these will both stay on the watch list💪🏾

They better have "What Comes after Love" on a streaming platform ASAP, not like what went down with "Anna." The cast and the story sounds like a dream come true and I want to watch it without delay T-T

Japanese storytelling + Korean acting and production = we're in for a ride

Talking about Hyeri, has anyone watched the movie My Punch-Drunk Boxer that she and Uhm Tae-goo as the leads?

A rather poignant movie according to review. Hope I can find it somewhere to watch it.

Yes, I liked that movie. I loved how they incorporated Pansori story telling into the boxing scenes.

I love those stills/ posters for What Comes After... They look absolutely cinematic and gorgeous.
Imo, Lee Se Young is one of the most beautiful Kdrama actors, but these pictures have captured her allure in a way that the other two shows I've seen of hers didn't.
