Would You Rather #39

In dramaland, leading ladies often find themselves torn between the love of two equally attractive men — a choice none of us would want to make! But what if you did have to pick between the frustrating lawyer and the adorkable police officer? In this weekly feature, we ask you to make the difficult decisions — and we aren’t limiting our options to dreamy oppas.

Vote via the poll and feel free to use the comments to explain exactly how you were able to choose! So, Beanies:

WOULD YOU RATHER #38 RESULTS

When it comes to tropey date ideas, the shopping spree is far more preferable to Beanies than spending the evening at an amusement park, even if the worst part of an amusement park experience — other people — has been removed from the equation. Never underestimate the allure of name brand jewelry and handbags, especially when you can resell them to pay for your retirement like @mayhemf. And even if you don’t intend to sell your new goods, having tangible stuff to keep after the date is over is extra nice, too, according to @britney. However, like @gikata said, I never specified the type of shopping spree, and @attiton ran in a completely different direction — the direction of a food market. There were plenty of Beanies eager to join in, too, and I’m pretty sure I gained five pounds just from reading the comment thread where everyone shared their favorite foods. But, I think @diana-hansen and @babylilo had the right idea when they suggested a shopping spree that involves a stop at a car dealership.

Not everyone wanted the shopping spree, though, and the justifications for picking an amusement park date were as varied as the were for the shopping spree. For @mysterious, who gets terrible anxiety when in crowded places, the opportunity to explore an empty amusement park would be a rare and appealing experience. Others, like @jerrykuvira and @zindigo, would prefer to make memories and embrace the romanticism and once-in-a-lifetime experience of being alone together at an amusement park. Plus, if you prefer a more pragmatic approach, like @jillian, renting out an entire amusement park is a massive flex, which means the your date can totally afford to take you on a shopping spree the next time you see each other.

Both choices are pretty bad. But a psychopath is an unstable and aggressive person suffering from chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behavior. Insufferable in-laws means they are too extreme to bear; intolerable by having or showing unbearable arrogance or conceit. I think I could handle the latter because a) the premise infers my spouse is the opposite of her family; b) the mansion means there is plenty of space to distance oneself from the in-laws; c) you can always just stay away from them 20+ hours a day doing things like work, vacation, etc. without them; and d) I could probably counter their conceit and arrogance with intelligent jabs at their flaws.

My insufferable inlaws over a psycho Lee Dong-wook. I'm not even thinking twice about this.

Dealing with in-laws...that's a better brainer compared to dealing with a psycho. I can tell the drama Psycho Lee Dong-wook is coming from and that itself is the highest deal breaker.

Let the inlaws bring all their drama, I'll take it and redirect if need be. But I'm not exchanging those inlaws for a psycho Lee Dong-wook, never.

Staying in a big mansion and only dealing with mostly verbal attacks and big egos from the in-laws with the option to just simply avoid them anytime seems like a good proposition to me.

Staying with a person labeled as a psycho still has a chance of you ending up dead no matter how slim it is.

Most Psychos don't kill people. Often, they become CEOs. They have no scruples, so they "gravitate" upwards, especially if they are also smart. Statistcally, there's a good chance that there are a few psychos in your chaebol family.

The in laws.

Though I've never watched Strangers from Hell, doesn't that involve a creepy murderer? I'm not attracted to Lee Dong Wook in the first place but why would it be even remotely appealing to share a space with someone who looks like they might kill you, in painful & terrifying ways, at any moment?

Even in 21st century most conservative asians are living with their in-laws. So 1st choice is more of a difficult option only to the West or liberal nations🤷‍♀️

Exactly, living with your Parents, Grandparents or In-laws is fairly normal in non-western counties and there is very little stigma around it.

The second option is the clear "no" here lol

In fact, in my country the stigma is if you don't stay with your in laws - it's either seen as uncaring, unfilial kids or that one party is indeed insufferable....

It was the same in my tribe but things changed rather quickly in the recent years. There is no stigma associated with it now either way.

Annoying in-laws versus potentially deadly housemate? I’ll take the one that leaves me with a better chance of staying alive. Also, spouse and I probably have the financial resources to avoid his family via vacations, a second home and everyone’s favorite — the camping trip.

Mansion? Well, that might make things easier... I do find LDW pretty creepy even when he's not playing a murderous psycho, so this is probably the double nope again for me, with in-laws option being oh-so-slightly more tolerable.

I have never seen any LDW show just for this reason - I have no idea why, he gives me creeps (I know it's unfair, poor guy is probably the sweetest guy around irl).

I know exactly what bothers me - his stare. It's just... not my style - I like people with soft, warm gaze unlike mine, so here's that))) Heard he's really good in baddie roles, which I can totally see why.

Option 1, no contest.

That's assuming murder is not allowed - one could bump off the psychopath and claim self-defence but then you'd get no Lee Dong-wook, on the other hand you can't bump off in-laws for being insufferable, you'd go to jail for sure. It's in-laws in the mansion for me, as long as I have a spouse who makes it bearable.

Why would you bump off Lee Dong-wook when you can learn sustainable jewellery making from him? Wae?! The man is trying so hard to build a sustainable lifestyle, reduce his carbon footprint by buying less meat and up cycling material for jewellery and nobody is praising his efforts.

I'm so much more likely to survive the insufferable in-laws. Sorry, psycho LDW. And, it's a mansion! So you can always have some alone time in the massive suite assigned to you and your partner when you need it, and I'm sure there are loads of rooms to hide in if they ever come looking for you. My plan would be to make friends with all the servants - it would give me someone to talk to, they would never give my hiding spots away, and we could catch each others' eye at mealtimes whenever the in-laws were being particularly terrible!

The Friends-with-servants is a good plan.
Another one who will be good to have on your side is your spouse. But if you live with his insufferable family, maybe he will think that YOU are the odd one out.

One can to stand up to their in-laws or just ignore them but enraging a psycho might get them killed.

But your in-laws are the family of your spouse! So your annoyance (or in K-dramaland, your well-grounded fear that they might kill you) might make your spouse angry with you, and you will be accused of making things up or being hostile and so on. He might draw them into the conflict you have as a couple, and they will all be on his side, because they are the insufferable kind.

I haven't thought about this. I guess I made this choice assuming my spouse will be on my side or something.
Between insufferable in-laws and a psycho killer, there is no way to stay safe.

Spend time in a mansion with the insufferable in-laws. The mansion better be big enough so I do not get to see the in-laws all the time.

Psycho Lee Dong Wook is scary. I will def stay away from him.

Thanks for the mention @daebakgrits!

That's from Strangers from Hell? No thanks, I wouldn't survive one day there.

In laws isn't so bad. I said I was going to live under their roof, but I never said I would live under their rules.
I'm not Hyun Woo, I would make things very clear for Hae In before moving in. 😂 I would be the insufferable in law.

This one made me really think bc tough choices but I reckon I'd rather cop the insufferable in laws because if I'm in a mansion, there's ample hideaway places and also comfort. If I'm going to be stuck with psychos of a different variety, I'd rather do it in luxury hahaha

I think it is important to consider the relationship of your husband to the in-laws. If there is a psycho/psychos in your mansion, will your husband be a help and support, or will he be hurt and all "Don't talk about my mother that way!"?
If you have an argument, will he go to his mother, who will passive-aggresively sigh and talk about "some people" at breakfast in front of servants that you are supposed to imagine can't hear?

Psycho Lee Dong-wook, no hesitation.

I'm not comfortable in social settings, and living with my in-laws would mean just that... while living with a psycho means constantly shrinking social circles. Bliss! Finally an introvert-friendly living solution!

Do I get teeth jewellery too?

I would definitely rather share a mansion with my insufferable in-laws than stay in a dorm with psycho Lee Dong-wook.
Watching Strangers From Hell, I immediately realised that I would rather spend a night on a park bench than spend an hour in the dorm.

Staying with Samchon Lee Dong-wook in a dorm. He has already installed a bullet proof cupboard to hide in. We can run the Shop for Killers from the dorm. I get a hot Ajhusshi to say with and protect me and I earn tub-loads (*opps he's strangely allergic to bathtubs now) so bucket-loads of money for running the Shop!! Win, win.

At first glance, I found this very difficult.

But really, it all comes down to the mansion or the dorm. Even if I were to live with my in-laws in a mansion we could mostly stay out of each others' way in any case. This is impossible in a dorm. And I almost forgot the very important factor of a yard. So of course it's the mansion.

Mansion for me, insufferable in-laws are easier to handle than a psychopath. Unless the grandpa in-law has a psychopath girlfriend. But I would still choose a mansion over a dorm.

This one is a pretty easy choice. Especially if the spouse looks like Kim Soo Hyun and is as intelligent as Hyun Woo. Or Gong Yoo, perfect! (Though maybe he'd invite his buddy Lee Dong Wook the psycho to visit... 😬) The mansion sounds less risky and there'd be more space inside and on the property to avoid the in-laws. Obvious money here also means more chances for getaway vacations.

No, you wouldn't be married to Kim Soo-hyun, because you would be him. Or else, it would be another story. Like in One, the Woman, you could be married to a spoiled and unfaithful second son, and there would be people mysteriously dying in the periphery as well as closer circles of the family.

Sorry, you said "look like" ... I read too fast and answered too fast. It was because being married to a Kim Soo-hyun would make me reconsider my preference. But not because of the in-laws, just because of the hubby.

Lee Dong Wook, for sure. The psycho he played was more interested in turning his roomies into fellow psychos, rather than killing them. That could be fun. If not, what a way to go :o) I would prefer a less dingy dorm though, and my own pillows.

Insufferable in-laws in a mansion would make the whole place seem small. And given choice between KSH eye candy and LDW eye candy, for me it's LDW all the way. So pretty. And that voice.

He is just one person, and I don't have to pretend to like him. And supposably, if I like him, that's *my* problem. If I didn't know that I was put there in the dorm with him in a magical choice where he was the alternative to insufferable chaebol-in-laws, I would probably suffer more, because living with a psycho is terrible. But as I said, I would be free to dislike it.

If I live with my in-laws together with my husband, then every conflict with them is a problem with my hubby, too.
I am sure in-laws who are not insufferable exist, and in that case, a mansion with OK people would be better. Of course any cohabitation is a bit hard - the "habit" part of cohabitation must be worked into a pattern that doesn't leave everybody super annoyed with each other.
But having a mansion, and I suppose, servants so that you don't have to argue about who takes out the trash - that helps a lot.
