News bites: January 2, 2024

  • With the new year upon us, MBC’s Knight Flower will soon be taking us to Joseon days and the latest poster has our masked heroine Honey Lee (One the Woman) stumbling into leading man Lee Jong-won (The Golden Spoon). Premiering next week on January 12, the comedy-sageuk also stars Kim Sang-joong (The Banker) and Lee Ki-woo (Miraculous Brothers). [MBC]

  • LG’s U+ Mobile TV dropped the first poster for Branding in Sungsoo-dong, showcasing our body-swapped leads Kim Ji-eun (Longing for You) and Park Solomon (a.k.a. Lomon) (Revenge of Others). Directed by PD Jung Heon-soo (Twelve Nights) with Choi Sun-mi and Jeon Sun-young writing, the office romance will be fluttering our hearts starting February 5. [MBC]

  • Park Shin-hye (Sisyphus) and Kim Jae-young (Love in Contract) have confirmed casting for SBS’s new crime fantasy The Judge From Hell, which is currently being planned to broadcast this year. Production for the series has filmmaker Park Jin-pyo (Brave Citizen, Love Forecast) at the helm with scripts by Jo Yi-soo. [Sports Donga]
  • In the meantime, SBS is also preparing for the continuation of 7 Escape: War for Survival, which has our titular seven characters Reborn in the second season’s new title. As seen in the recent special teaser, the makjang games have only just begun, bringing back our ensemble cast with Eom Ki-joon (Little Women), Hwang Jung-eum (Men Are Men), Lee Joon (Red Heart), and Lee Yubi (Yumi’s Cells 2) among others. [Osen]

  • A new poster has come out for Disney+’s upcoming A Shop for Killers as well, assembling a suspicious group of six led by Lee Dong-wook (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) and Kim Hye-joon (Connect). With PD Lee Kwon (Rescue Me) both writing and directing, together with PD Noh Kyu-yub and writer Ji Ho-jin, the action drama will be opening its doors on January 17. [Sports Kyunghyang]
  • On tvN, the promos continue for the sageuk romance Captivating the King, where we spend some time with a moody Jo Jung-seok (Hospital Playlist 2) and Shin Se-kyung (Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun) in the latest batch of stills. The historical fiction premieres on January 21, taking over the weekend slot following Maestra: Strings of Truth. [News1]

I think I'll just keep watching The Nokdu Flower for my JJS Sageuk fix, thanks. Besides, the Captivating the King writernim is cursed.

what is the name of that drama?

The Crowned Clown

(I am also passing on JJS’s upcoming sageuk).
Even Sic I think would have to agree that Yeo Jin-goo shined in episodes 7 and 8 of THE CROWNED CLOWN. That performance can’t be taken away from him.

On to FLOWER THAT BLOOMS AT NIGHT/ KNIGHT FLOWER. When I see the stills with Lee Jong-won wearing gat and beans I am thinking Bean Boy 2 more on the look rather than character because presumably LJW’s character will not suffer the fate BB1 (Lee Jae-kyoon) experienced in tvN’s SECRET ROYAL INSPECTOR & JOY (2021) (Viki).

Yeo Jin-goo shines even in crappy sageuks.

Oh yes, he was fantastic. More so as the King than the Clown somehow. TCC was my first proper Jingoo drama. I've actually had this conversation w you before I think, about me and Jingoo 😂

I hope nobody ever has to suffer the fate of Bead Boy lmao.

“beloathed”, excellent new word for the new year! 👏🏽

I know what you are saying about watching 2 historical dramas simultaneously. I will be watching KNIGHT FLOWER and try to catch up and watch THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR simultaneously. I am 5 episodes behind in GKW having fallen into the A JOURNEY TO LOVE trap and 2 other cdramas: THE HOPE and THE LONELY WARRIOR. (All very different lol but enjoyable.)
With KNIGHT FLOWER coming in with 12 episodes there will be a 6 week overlap with GKW without preemptions.
(I watched HAECHI and THE CROWNED CLOWN simultaneously and that was a challenge!)

Just curious @coolargo, Flix. In HAECHI by now you should have probably seen the scene of Kwon Yul pawing all over Jung Il-woo at the tavern. One of my favorite scenes (and it shows Kwon Yul’s comic acting ability.)

5

👀 what was that about Kwon Yul ... hmm shall I search YT for that scene.

@marcusnyc20 Thank you! I really hadn't seen Kwon Yul's comic talent before. I wonder how long will it take me to see 48 episodes of Haechi. 😅

3

Ooh Knight Flower yay!!! The drama is looking fun, but even if it fizzles, Honey Lee will be great. Branding in Sungsoo-dong sounds like it might be cute - but also like it might be hard to access.

She was fantastic in "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People." Her talents were well utilized, making her character shine. She didn't play the gayageum, but she did the Janggu dance.

I like the concept of Knight Flower and haven't seen either of the leads before. Looking forward to some fresh faces. On the other hand, two Kim Jae-Young dramas in the coming year makes me very happy. As for Captivating the King, I'm definitely giving it a try. I like both these actors. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who enjoys Shin Se-Kyung. She has a vibe that's good for certain roles and this one seems like a good match. My drop sensor is tuned WAAAAY up right now though!

Knight Flower looks so vivid and pretty. im not sure if it is good or not. styling tells a lot if it was realistic and ragged then it would be a different drama. so im thinking it will be more fantasy less sageuk

They don't use the word "fantasy" in the advertising, only "comedy-sageuk". But then again, when has K-drama advertising been 💯% accurate.
