News bites: December 27, 2023

  • Comforting our weary souls with ice cream and childhood nostalgia, a new poster has dropped for JTBC’s Doctor Slump, where Park Shin-hye (Sisyphus) and Park Hyung-shik (Our Blooming Youth) unexpectedly find solace in each other’s company. Slated to air on January 27, the rivals-to-lovers rom-com has PD Oh Hyun-jong (The One and Only, Find Me in Your Memory) at the helm with scripts by Baek Sun-woo (My Roommate Is a Gumiho, What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim). [News1]

  • Disney+ released a new poster for their action series A Shop for Killers, showcasing our fierce uncle-niece duo, played by Lee Dong-wook (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) and Kim Hye-joon (Connect). Also starring Seo Hyun-woo (Celebrity), Jo Han-seon (Stove League), Park Ji-bin (Blind), and Geum Hae-na (Cannonball), the novel adaptation will be launching next month on January 17. [News1]

  • Over on TVING, the chilling tale of Death’s Game is set to continue in the upcoming Part 2 and the latest teaser prepares us for the showdown that Seo In-gook (Cafe Minamdang) et al. is determined to win. Facing off against Death – played by Park So-dam (Record of Youth) – and now Kim Ji-hoon (Love to Hate You) as well, the dark fantasy returns next week on January 5. [News1]
  • tvN’s Marry My Husband released another trailer as well, setting the stage for our heroine Park Min-young (Love in Contract) to re-do her life and get rid of the trash for good. Signaling a fresh start with a January 1 premiere, the revenge rom-com also stars Na In-woo (Longing for You), Lee Yi-kyung (Critical X), and Song Ha-yoon (Oh! Young-shim). [Newsen]

  • In the meantime, TV Chosun’s My Happy Ending is just days away and it’s hard not to be fooled by the adorable stills of doting dad Sohn Ho-joon (The First Responders 2) and darling daughter Choi So-yul (A Good Day to Be a Dog. However, the new teaser makes it clear that Jang Nara’s (Family: The Unbreakable Bond) happiness is about to be shattered when the thriller series begins this week on December 30. [Star News]
  • New character stills have come out for TVING’s LTNS (a.k.a. Long Time No Sex), featuring our comedy’s dispassionately married pair, Esom (Black Knight) and Ahn Jae-hong (Mask Girl). With filmmakers Im Dae-hyung (Moonlit Winter) and Jeon Go-woon (Persona) co-leading production in both writing and directing, the 6-episode series will be coming to our screens on January 19. 1 - I'm suing this poster for trying to give me diabetes.
2 - guys, it's a NOVEL adaptation for once, can you believe it? Also I didn't recognize LDW at first glance, damn.

Some of the best adaptation in dramaland were actually based on novels. Maybe because novels actually strive to develop the characters and how they change through a series of harships/obstacles they encounter, ahem. Let's see.

As long as we're not talking about web c-novels, one can hope)))

idk why I'm so prejudiced against web novels. some books published online are masterpieces while traditionally published books are... not. still doesn't stop me from raising an eyebrow when I even hear the term web novel.

Lack of professional editing is the most likely culprit tbh. Like even the greatest and most experienced authors out there usually need some external help to polish their manuscripts properly, but these web-novels are just... dumped into the world as they are. They're basically commercialized fanfics, and I don't think I need to explain to anyone the average quality of that stuff.

Beyond excited for Doctor Slump, and making sure I clear out my drama schedule for the premiere!

I’m intrigued by A Shop for Killers, but part of me wonders how much Lee Dong-wook there will actually be if he’s supposed to die early on?

I definitely want to watch Death’s Game but I’m waiting for the rest to come out (and maybe skim some Beanie feedback) before I give it a go.

Marry My Husband and My Happy Ending aren’t doing much for me at this point, but I’m interested to see how LTNS shapes up. It’s a full January!

2. I'm taking comfort from the fact that mdl cast mentions LDW at the topmost and he is listed as having the "main role".

I am hoping that LDW faked his death to make sense of his main role. I have not read the novel so I am just speculating.

That makes sense of course.
My nonsense speculation is that he's a ghost who can't move on till he passes the mantle and the niece is capable of running the shop. 🤣

Dr Slump and Long time no sex are on the long list but as I am already watching Between him and her two dramas with failing relationships may be too much like hard work.

I kept on hoping it was a misunderstanding or a mis-translation and that actually it was only an "attempt" from which he survived.

Same. Even though his funeral picture is set, I still can't accept it.

So sad. :(

I didn't want to believe it was true either as I first read it on a blog so I googled his name and it was on all the major news website.

Since he's a huge actor, and My Mister is (arguably) the most beloved K-drama I think Dramabeans should do at least an obituary or memorial post for him, probably to pay a little bit of respect?

Actually I've been waiting for that post/announcement about him since yesterday, probably some coverage of his best dramas? just throwing ideas here @db-staff

I think it’s hard for a site like this to write posts influenced by the real life of actors whatever the circumstances. It’s outside of their area of expertise and moves away from the main focus of the site which is the fictional world shown in drama and films and occasionally variety shows.

Perhaps a hangout for talking LSK’s dramas and there are so many favorites such as Coffee Prince, Miss Korea, Pasta, and the best ever My Ajusshi.

(There are many good LSK movies too.

DB used to discuss actor's related news and scandals quite a while ago but then they become way too rampant and I guess it was a good decision on their part to keep this site solely for dramas and drama related news. But yes I guess we're all feeling a need to discuss him more considering how well-liked he was here.

I understand this decision bc the media puts celebrities under a microscope and everything is a THING. I don't care about actors etc personal lives, I don't even like seeing behind-the-scenes bc it kills the illusion, you know? But I'm in shock :( I think maybe a post honoring someone that we lose might be nice :(

Lee Sun-kyun’s performances have so especially touched me that I would like to be able to exchange appreciative remembrances with others. A Beanie hangout on the work of Lee Sun-kyun would be a great way for me and like-minded others to celebrate his work. I am glad that Dramabeans’ focus lies elsewhere than sensitive personal issues in actors’ private lives. Because discussions might veer into personal circumstances of the sort Dramabeans successfully mostly avoids, if Dramabeans chooses not offer a remembrance feature, I accept it.

It could simply be a post asking people to share what their favorite LSK drama or movie is. They've written these type of posts for other actors.

I am heartbroken. Pasta was my first ever K-drama and LSK my ‘first love’ in K-dramas. He is my favourite actor in the K-world, and I have followed him for the longest time. I am a fan of his wife’s as well. It’s hard to process this.

Oh I know! I just saw the news and my heart dropped with disbelief that he is gone. What a tragedy for his family and for his fans. (I'm one). It will take me a while to really believe he is gone.

Getting healing vibes from the coloring of the Doctor Slump poster. I am crossing fingers that the comedy part won’t be primarily due to drunken antics like other current shows. Story wise enemies to lovers usually lends itself well to comedy.

#1 Can you get more sweeter than all that pink in #1? And the pair looks good. It's build so much expectations that I hope it holds up. After Squid Game 2 this is generating the most heat. Truly can't wait.
#2 This one has my interest right off the bat.
Marry My husband has left me lukewarm though.

A Shop for Killers. Might be worth checking out.

Does Kim Ji-hoon have long hair in Death's Game? Here's hoping.

Looking forward to LTNS. Hopefully it won't be a hot mess, because it feels like the potential for that is HIGH.
