A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 9

It’s a good day to usher in our OTP’s dating era! Whoop! We get secret dating, adorable moments, skinship and a whole lot of squee. A side couple is also seriously brewing in the background. And then there’s our resident mountain spirit. *Rolls eyes*

EPISODE 9

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 9

We open with a double celebration at Hae-na’s house where Yoo-ra and Woo-taek congratulate her on breaking her curse and starting a happy relationship with Seo-won. Like we expected, our Seo-hae couple is all shades of cute as they hide under the covers to make phone calls, come up with nicknames for each other, and aggressively blush while kicking their feet like the high-schoolers they teach.

Speaking of teaching and school, the vice principal distributes talisman bracelets to some of the teachers including a specially made one for Hae-na. The bracelet is supposed to have the perfect harmony of yin-yang energy that will keep her from breaking up with her boyfriend. But in reality, the bracelet is from Bo-gyeom because, surprise: the vice principal is also a mountain spirit! How interesting.

Unlike Bo-gyeom who has stuck around for hundreds of years — because he has to take revenge on Hae-na and Seo-won for a certain loss they made him suffer in their Joseon past lives — the vice principal is tired of the human realm and wants to return to the mountains. Unfortunately, he’s stuck on earth delivering suspicious bracelets on behalf of his mountain spirit boss.

The vice principal also bans PDA among the staff, and our OTP activates the secret dating trope. Love it! Seo-won and Hae-na sneak around like the main characters in a thriller romance, and while Seo-won is a smooth operator, Hae-na struggles with brain-freezes and glitches because secret dating is so not her strong suit. But can you blame her? She’s dating Cha Eun-woo the hottest guy in school! I also wouldn’t know how to act normally around him.

Seo-won invites Hae-na over to his place, and she’s excited to finally be here as a human, not as a dog. But things get kinda awkward because they’re a new couple… and they’re all alone… and Hae-na has got a dirty mind. The kind that makes her imagination run wild. Whoa! I did not know I needed those visuals of Cha Eun-woo’s fatal seduction with a strawberry. Okay, maybe I’m the one with a dirty mind.

The Seo-hae couple is about to kiss when Bo-gyeom visits to “look for something,” and Hae-na has to hide in Yul’s room. Could things get any worse for our OTP? Yes! Yul also comes home. Oh boy! To keep the party crashers within the confines of the living room, Seo-won forces himself to sit through a movie with them while poor Hae-na is stuck in Yul’s closet. Still, our OTP manages to sneak a kiss when Seo-won comes to fetch Hae-na later on… and what a kiss! There’s something about the enclosed space and the presence of people outside the room that made this kiss even steamier than it already was! *Fans self*

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 9 kiss

Speaking of kisses, things between Yoo-na and Woo-taek get a bit sensitive after she imagines his lips as chicken gizzard and tries to kiss him. The Han sisters and their imaginations! Now Yoo-na is more aware of Woo-taek as a man rather than as just a friend, and she’s determined to find out what the feeling is. How? The way everything started, of course. With a kiss!

“It’s okay for friends to kiss once, right?” Yoo-ra asks. No, it is not okay. You’ll turn into a dog! But Yoo-ra already broke her curse with Woo-taek when they were kids. Determination or not, Yoo-ra can’t go through with the planned kiss — but her attempt is all it takes to mess with Woo-taek’s mind. Now he also beginning to think of her as more than a friend. The friends-almost-turned-lovers soon snap out of their thoughts, though, because the girls’ dog-uncle is sick, and the family has to prepare for the worst.

Seo-won asks Hae-na how the family’s curse started because if they knew its origin, it could help in figuring out how to end it. Hae-na says no one knows how it started, and she up until now, she has never even thought about the possibility that the curse could come to an end. I guess the spectators do see the game differently from the players. Regardless of whether the curse can end or not, Seo-won promises to always be by Hae-na’s side. How reassuring.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 9

Circling back to the originator of the curse, shaman Ji-ah trails after a vision/illusion and ends up at Bo-gyeom’s secret lair in the school. She has memory flashes of what looks like a past life when she sees the scarf in the wooden box, and she eventually passes out when she sees a portrait of herself — or rather, of Cho-young. Bo-gyeom carries an unconscious Ji-ah out of his lair, and she wakes up in the school’s clinic.

Ji-ah wonders why the scarf looked familiar and why her face was on Bo-gyeom’s wall. Meanwhile Yul performs a layman’s exorcism on her because he thinks she has been possessed. This scene was so hilarious! Yul is the best boy, and I luff him so much. Possession aside, he was genuinely worried about Ji-ah’s health, and this interaction just highlights how much of a good person he is.

Of course, he won’t be Yul if he doesn’t — very solemnly — give his uncle dating tips about Hae-na. “Don’t ask Ms. Han to do what puppies do. Don’t order coffee for her, get her a cup of cocoa.” And vice versa. “When my uncle makes fried eggs, he always draws faces on them. You must eat those faces last otherwise he’ll get upset. He likes solving math problems. Buy him a lot of newly released math books.” Loool. At least he looks like he is taking their dating news in stride.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 9

Ji-ah seeks answers from Bo-gyeom about why she fainted after seeing the portrait, and his usual evasive tactics don’t work on her. She offers to do a card reading for him, and she sees that Bo-gyeom keeps lingering around the underworld because he misses a dead person. “You abandoned a field full of grass because of a dead woman, just to live an aimless life here.”

Oooo. Ji-ah’s reading is scarily accurate, and while Bo-gyeom acts unfazed in front of her, he is uneasy. Ji-ah totally got under his skin — especially when she mentioned that the dead woman doesn’t want him to linger aimlessly in the human world because of her. Via a flashback, we confirm that Bo-gyeom and Cho-young were in love. And even though Bo-gyeom doesn’t act like it, he does see the resemblance between Ji-ah and Cho-young, right?

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 9

As we wrap up for the week, Bo-gyeom invites Seo-won to his camper van and Seo-won is surprised to see the dog keychain that Hae-na gave him in week two, in Bo-gyeom’s possession. To ramp up the surprise, Bo-gyeom appears with a freaking sword to Seo-won’s neck, and I have to check that we’re still in 2023 because what the heck!? But in yet another flashback, we see Joseon Seo-won — with an arrow (?) in his chest — hold out the bloody sword to Cho-young’s neck at a Cliff of Doom, and Joseon Hae-na is also at the cliff. Oh dear!

If there’s anything K-dramas have taught me regarding past lives, it’s that nothing is what it seems. I’m just going to hold off on building theories and passing judgement until the past arc is fully fleshed out. The drama is taking its sweet time with the full reveal of the past life, but I’ll admit that the more we learn about their past lives, the more I’m reluctant to learn about it. Damn this curse that hovers in the background and keeps us from fully enjoying the cute moments.

It was a weird episode. The fantasy bursts from Hae-Na seem out-of-place and the couple’s first time teen level awkwardness was eye rolling . . . they are adults, even inexperienced adults, should act like adults if they want emotionally grow together. There is no reason to hide their dating (VP’s warning is dumb) because there is a married couple in the teacher’s office AND the teachers from the beginning were all about dating match-ups.

So History and the VP are mountain spirits in human form. That begs the question whether Hae-Na’s family, Math and Teen Shaman are also mountain spirits whose powers have been eliminated or repressed by the jealous revenge plot. Teen Shaman card reading really puts a dagger in BG’s broken heart - - and accelerates his revenge which is killing the “man” who killed his human lover. (Again, the mythology that you have one life (soul) that reincarnates endlessly until one reaches a spiritual paradise is apparently in full force here.) As I mentioned last week: “Is this Human Jealousy from an immortal being?” Yes it is. Especially if BG has supernatural powers over human beings (life and death powers?).

Since the curse has been lifted, there is an overall drift of "so what?" as the plot moves forward.

The closet makeout was weird, lol. All I could think about was her neck hurting and how small that closet was. That being said 😜😍. I get hiding it from Yul a little bit, but not from the history teacher. Anyway, the rest of the episode was kind of funny.

Yeah, I agree @unit that I sort of wish we didn’t have do spend any time with the past lives. It was not my fav part of the comic and I like it even less here. I don’t know what it is about it, I’m just not that interested. I’m very interested in seeing out leads together, however, so it feels like even more of a let down when we have to remember that something happened however-many-hundred years ago and we still have to deal with it. Oh well.

This was the first episode I didn’t like as much (I hope it’s not a trend). I had fun watching for the most part, and I loved when we got to see the SFL teacher and student be heartbroken together as they noticed the secret dating. This kiss was also great, and Yul very seriously telling each half of the couple how to act was adorable, but every time the show tried to move the plot forward, it fell a little flat for me. Still, if they keep giving me this many moments that I love, I’m willing to sit through some plot junk to get to them.

I feel like the past life is going to be a much bigger thing here than in the comic, which is even more annoying

Agree with everything you said. Although I’m committed to live watching , this show would be best binged watched and fast forwarded through the evil YouTubers and past life stuff.

I think maybe this drama really stopped here, with episode 9, which I by the way loved.
Someone who follows it and maybe even better, gifs it, are welcome to tag me with their highlights. I don't think I have the patience for the remaining episodes unless someone really convincingly tempts me back in.

You make a good point. All the talk on the fanwall about dropping dramas has me reconsidering how into this one I am. There are still things that I really love, and since I already know the story (or, how it goes in the comic at least) there are things I’m still looking forward to, but we might have to slog through some things to get there. I think I’m going to put this on pause for now and finish it after the whole thing is out. I have a feeling the past-lives stuff is going to work better for me as a binge than as a slow trickle.

I'm forced to consider that, if I didn't love the comic so much, I probably would have dropped this. It's just... meh. I want to love it, but I don't. I don't quite know why.

The changes from the comic are becoming bigger and more frustrating to me as things becoming progressively darker and convoluted, and IMO some of the characters are (ironically) more two dimensional. See https://www.dramabeans.com/members/vienibenmio/activity/1499661/ for more

Some of the romance scenes were sweet. Looks like we are moving on to the past now. I guess Seo Won killed Bo Gyeom’s girlfriend in the past and now BG wants revenge? Weird. Wasn’t the curse the revenge? Like Castaway Diva, this one started well, but I am losing interest now. 😀

I'm SO over BG and whatever his nefarious plans are. And again, why did he help them so many times before? Make it make sense, you inhuman dude! Hopefully shaman girl will kick some logic into him if/once she regains her past life memories. Cards reading scene was good, but I cringed hard when she let him touch them himself, only the owner can do that, wtf!

Yul giving out uncalled dating advice and trying himself at exorcism lol. Someone pls give the boy a purpose of his own, he has too much unused creative energy in him rn))) Surprised he didn't pick up the fact that HN was there from his uncle's off behavior, that was really not that hard to guess... oh well, guess he's way more innocent and trusting than I was at that age.

Our OTP didn't have to hide from anyone indeed, but I can see how at this stage of their relationship it may be too awkward. Once again, SW is a genius not only in math and being pretty, but also improvising excuses - sister's shoes lol (also love how he cunningly picked a very boring movie to make his unexpected guests all sleepy). And deep tongue kissing as well apparently. Gotta be honest - even after a rather heated epilogue of the previous episode I did not see THAT coming. HN's dirty imagination scenes were too cringy for me - I have a low tolerance for such things - but that kiss was worth all my FF struggle previously! Respect, boy.

Am I too naive to hope that after witnessing leads' constant badly covered flirting and sort of accepting the fact SFL will finally give up? She was far less annoying lately, abandoning her doomed from the start pursuit would be a good move. SW's student fangirl addition was a bit out of nowhere - HN's face at her love poem lmao - but I like that this didn't seem to be progressing into over the top territory so far. Maybe girl can try her luck with Yul instead.

Things are finally moving somewhere between YR and WT, yay! I thought he was aware he's into her tho... Maybe just very deep in denial ofc, I mean, it's been what, 20 years or so since their kiss? Really hope the overall curse will be lifted soon, poor uncle doesn't have much time left and this whole plotline is seriously spoiling my enjoyment of lead romance. Sword to the neck twist was not in my bingo card today, but the sooner we'll get over with it, the better!

lol most of the students have been shown to be swooning over Mr Jin, they go and leave drinks and snacks for him at the teacher's office and they draw hearts on their notebooks during his class ... I guess one of them broke rule number 1 of having a teacher crush haha

Thanking Cha Eunwoo for bringing ‘real’ kissing into Kdrama land. I mean it’s about time. The whole scene was perfect too, from the moments leading up to the kiss, to the passionate kissing itself; as it screamed the couple is so much in love; which is intended to be conveyed as part of the story. Good job, Actor Cha Eunwoo!

I found it a bit weird for Bo-gyeom to just walk into his friend's house without knocking. Also a bit weird to kiss your girlfriend/boyfriend in a cupboard when there are clearly other options. But hey, still an enjoyable show.

I think they should choose a ton for the couple and stick to it, either cute with lovely moments, either more mature and sexy. The way the kiss scenes were filmed were kinda unbalanced between the actors, it looked like CEW was doing all the work.

Bo-gyeom is kinda boring now... His intentions are not clear and don't seem logical. Why did he become friend with Seo-Won in the first place?

This was arguably the cutest filler episode ever. I found the two being so sickeningly lovey-dovey around each other really funny and sweet, and there were so many things that had me laughing out loud like Yul’s little dramatic monologues, the dramatic parting behind the curtains at the school gym, the student and the other teacher having their Candace from Phineas and Ferb moments every time they caught Seo-won and Hae-na being all couply, and the swoon-y day dream sequences that were most definitely fan-serivce so I was lapping it all up.

NOT TO MENTION THE KISS !!! *squeals*

The only thing that I was like 🙄about was the stuff with Bo-gyeol, but apparently I’m not the only one who thought that so yay. It felt very disjointed, weird and like another drama altogether - and being completely honest, I don’t really care about his past or the past lives storyline, I just want more OTP time!!

I knew you'd mention the kisses. 😂 Quite worthy of all caps as well IMHO.

Re BG, I think his plan is to get them to fall in love so he can rip them apart as they somehow did for his love? I'm not sure. It certainly is a much darker plot line.

Tiger Man and the vice principle are mountain spirits ? Are they assigned cases from heaven ? If you had a complaint about a mountain spirit, do you speak to a local deity or do you have to file a complaint with the Jade Emperor himself ?
The Joseon curse part of the story seems like another story that has been tacked on.

Okay everything about this ep was so disjointed and slow. I ranted about it in a different forum and a fellow disgruntled viewer used the perfect observation that summed up my feelings:

The editing was so off.

I noted multiple drawn out sequences that could've been cut & replaced with the story instead and found myself going "why is this so long?"
It truly felt that the director didn't know how to handle a rom-com and just left it to the actors after yelling action. As usual, the changes they made was unnecessary albeit the exception of some scenes. Yul was the only saving grace throughout the ep, his antics were hilarious.
Ill keep watching for Yul but my anticipation for the drama died back when they revealed it to be a one ep per week shtick :')

I honestly love everything about this episode. I was laughing out loud throughout the scenes, from Haena's dirty mind imagination to the unexpected but totally expected interruption of BGsaem and Yul. I really enjoyed how they tortured the lovebirds on their first official date and being alone in the house. Apparently, Seowoni, you can't do anything that you want even at your own house.

Unit: Thanks for the great description of YUL giving dating advice at his young age to his brother and Hae Na. Priceless. And yes, I hear all those who are hating the preponderance of Joseon time-slips lately, but I'm a fan, and so I must admit, that I'm finally enjoying this show now that it's dark past has landed smack dab in the middle of all the sweet mushy love scenes we've been watching (which've been so fun and lighthearted), but now we get something to sink our teeth into...woof! I'm thinking Cha Eun-woo might have made a good choice with this lighthearted vrs dark themed drama. He'll get to show off more skills (if you've seen him in Masters in the House, he's good at everything he tries, and his character in "Island" as a way-cool demon-slaying priest was fascinating for me). BUT it is Lee Hyun-woo who's captured my attention in this. His character is literally a double-edged sword during this drama: an all-smiles, kind & positive teacher, versus his portrayal of the 'Joseon Mountain Spirit' who's dark, threatening & planning revenge. He was moving some of the action in this story from the start, but now I think he's stepping into the spotlight as chief Nemesis, which will give us something else to angst about instead of lifting her dog-curse. Instead, we need to see our couple go back and get rid of the curse completely so she doesn't pass it along like all her ancestors did. This should be interesting, and it's such a juicy part for Lee Hyun Woo to play. He gives really good 'bad vibes' when the smile slips off his face. Good choice of character to broaden his resumé. I'm just hoping the script doesn't let him or Cha Eun Woo down...
