News bites: November 28, 2023

  • Showcasing a beautifully moody Jang Nara (Family: The Unbreakable Bond) who vows for revenge, new posters have dropped for TV Chosun’s upcoming My Happy Ending (previously My Happy End). The mystery-thriller also stars Sohn Ho-joon (The First Responders 2), So Yi-hyun (Red Shoes), and Lee Ki-taek (Perfect Shot), and will be coming to our screens on December 30 next month. [Sports Kyunghyang]

  • Continuing the streak of eye-catching posters this past week, MBC enthralls us with a first look at our moonlighting widow Honey Lee (One the Woman) in the new poster for Knight Flower (previously Flower That Blooms at Night). Alongside Lee Jong-won (The Golden Spoon), Kim Sang-joong (The Banker), and Lee Ki-woo (Miraculous Brothers), the comedy-sageuk will be airing weekends, starting January 12 in the new year. [MBC]

  • Ahn Eun-jin (My Dearest) is considering an offer for All Shall Come True (roughly translated), potentially joining Kim Woo-bin (Our Blues) and Suzy (Doona) in the main cast. Aiming to broadcast sometime next year, the fantasy rom-com is the newest project by writer Kim Eun-sook (The Glory) who is teaming up with PD Lee Byung-heon (Be Melodramatic) to lead production. [News1]
  • SBS announced that the crime-comedy Not Very Strong But Charming Violent Crimes Unit has been added to next year’s lineup, starring Kim Dong-wook (Perfect Stranger), Park Ji-hwan (My Lovely Boxer), Seo Hyun-woo (Celebrity), Park Se-wan (One Day Off), and Lee Seung-woo (Vigilante). Slated to broadcast in the early half of 2024, PD Ahn Jong-yeon is attached to direct with scripts penned by Lee Young-chul. [News1]

  • The first poster has also been released for KBS’s fictional sageuk Fantasy Sonata, where our shadowy hero Park Ji-hoon (Weak Hero Class 1) commands the throne. But with two souls inhabiting his body, it’s not yet clear who the true victor is. Also starring Hong Ye-ji (2037), Hwang Hee (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938), and Ji-woo (The First Responders 2), the webtoon adaptation will be launching this January. [News1]
  • As we finally (!) head into premiere week, JTBC’s Welcome to Samdalri came out with another feast for the eyes teaser, where we follow our heroine Shin Hye-sun (See You in My 19th Life) as she finds her way back to Ji Chang-wook (The Worst of Evil). Taking over the weekend slot now that Strong Girl Nam-soon has finished its run, the friends-to-lovers rom-com begins in just four more days on December 2. [Newsen]

Oops I was rewriting my comment and deleted the original before I realized it had been responded to. Here's the revision fwiw:

That poster for Knight Flower is fabulous. But dare I ask beanies this question? Ok, I dare. Does the poster suggest to you a COMEDY sageuk? Because it doesn't to me, and I'm starting to get seriously annoyed with marketing lately that does absolutely no favors when it misrepresents a series in genre, style, or tone.

The writing on the right side reads: "If the strict laws of the country cannot save the powerless, then why not save them?"

Ok, I can see that COULD be used in a comedy context. But not with that poster art.

IDK, maybe I'm making too big a deal out of it, but I'm feeling a little burned lately by marketing that promises one type of story but we get something different. It's like picking up what you think is coffee and tasting tea instead (just and example, no insults intended to either coffee or tea 😉)

I'm with you on that. What is going on with these marketing campaigns?

From the posters for Welcome to Samdalri I'm fully expecting it to be a sadistic trauma-fest because that is what I have come to expect from cheerful sunshiney posters (yep, scarred by Summer Strike).

I thought "Flowers that Bloom at Night" was far more appealing, but no one listens to me.

Flower That Blooms At Night fits the image.
Knight Flower does not.

Don’t be like that @Elinor. We do.

1

Lol so true... it seems like the more dreamy and pastel the poster, the more angsty and toxic the actual plot turns out to be 😅

Well Castaway Diva’s promo poster was all about light, bright colours, hippy macramé theme while the FL strummed a guitar. I’d say 10 % (if I’m being generous) of the show has has touched on her being a castaway, 20% has focused on her musical aspirations not acting like a diva while the other 70% is filled with domestic violence - mostly children, stalkers, family suicide driving a car into a lake and toxic workplace people.
Are the marketing people having a laugh at us?

Exactly re: Castaway Diva! I've been wondering whether the inaccurate marketing is purposeful or the right hand just doesn't know what the left one is doing. Either way, it's frustrating.

Because it is so prevalent, I am wondering if it is actually a cultural disconnect. That what I expect from marketing as a Westerner or that the message I receive from these images as a Westerner may be  different than what is expected by a Korean audience.

For instance, I have learned that my idea of a "healing" drama is not what Korean drama producers are thinking when they use this term.  And I think it has more to do with differing overarching cultural ideas about well-being and emotions than anything else.

7

Also ice cream and sunshine make a much better poster than suicide attempts and domestic violence...could just be that

4

Diva should have shown Stalker Dad chasing the two boys in the background

1

70% is far too high. I would say 40-50 percent which is still very high given the musical content was often woven through other themes.

I agree, I actually think that CD integrates the trauma and violence stuff into the musical plot pretty well, especially compared to other dramas.

1

I'm very very excited for this one, but like you, I'm skeptical about how much comedy there will actually be. Honey Lee is stellar at comedy and will definitely be bringing her A-game, BUT, knowing it's a sageuk, I'm expecting comedy to be sprinkled in more as a seasoning to the other stuff going on.

The Matchmakers is a funny sageuk.
I hope Knight Flower* can do well.

It also specifically mentions korea in Hangeul and the question has a first-person pronoun so “Can’t I (then) save them”.

The poster gives me a reverse LONE RANGER (American Old West character) look where he wore a black ‘domino’ mask and the poster shows Honey Lee with a sort of white ‘domino’ mask.

1) has Jang Nara aunty considered staying single? every marriage in every drama she's been in has not been smooth sailing, to say the least.

2) oh cool, another Joseon noblewoman sneaking out to fulfill her girl boss dreams.

5) if Fantasy Sonata follows the story of the webtoon closely, it will be *exactly* as dark & depressing as the posters hint... honestly struggling to finish the webtoon tbh. it's a genuinely good story, but like so many entries in the grimdark genre, it's so hard to get through T-T

overall, those are some amazing and very artsy posters. the Samdalri ones are so light and cheery, while the Jang Nara ones are so ominous.

So I read elsewhere that Jang Nara is supposedly an influencer as well as a CEO in her new drama. Yikes. Is this how influencers in RL are also titling themselves nowadays? These scammers (I think most if not all are) something else.

3. Excuse me while I cry over my Kim Woo-bin and Suzy reunion after the heartbreak of Uncontrollably Fond and real life. I'm in the minority, but I like Kim Eun-sook's dramas.

2. Does Knight Flower have romance? Please don't tell me it's between Honey Lee and Lee Jong-won.

6. This poster looks heart-fluttering, and I can feel the start of their friends-to-lovers romance already.

No. 2. MBC’s FLOWERS THAT BLOOM AT NIGHT/KNIGHT FLOWER (12 eps).
Re your questions, for the first I am assuming yes, and for the second, I am assuming yes. So further assuming, Lee Jong-won will probably be the Knight.
The three main leads Honey Lee, Lee Jong-won and Lee Ki-woo are all dramatically blank slates for me. (I don’t recall LJW’s role in HP2.)
What I found interesting on this drama’s MDL entry are the supporting cast. (Heavy) Kim Sang-joong returns to the small screen for the first time since 2019 (MBC’s THE BANKER) and I really enjoyed Park Ju-hyun way back in tvN’s A PIECE OF YOUR MIND (2020).
Since I am watching GKW, I don’t think I will be taking on another sageuk, even a supposedly comedy sageuk, but Kim Sang-joong may tip the balance in favor of a look (that is if it available on a legal US stream).

Is it me or Kim Eun-Sook's drama castings have this penchant of degrading some fine lead actors into second leads?

- In Goblin, they put Yoo In-Na and Lee Dong Wook, both of whom are already seasoned leads, into a second lead category,
- In Mr. Sunsine, all three Yoo Yoon-Seok, Kim Min Jung and Byun Yo Han had led at least one drama before.
- In The Glory, both Park Sung Hoon and Lim Ji Yeon are technically "secondary characters" although they are the main villains.

I don't really want Ahn Eun Jin to take this offer, to be honest, its weird seeing her leading a drama (a hugely successful one, at that) and then to be relegated again to secondary characters.

Not all second leads are degrades. If anything, Kim Eun-sook knows how to write impressionable characters who shine when it's their time to shine. So main lead or not, I'm sure that there us something big in there.

Plus, if you look at the casting, it's Won-bin and Suzy as main leads. Ahn Eun-jin is joining as supporting. The main leads are seasoned actors in their own right. Same as Lee Byung-hoon and Kim Taeri(whom I've come to respect) in Mr. Sunshine. Being cast as a SL against acting forces such as these is way better unlike when seasoned actors are casted as SLs against actors who can't act to save their lives. Like when Kwon Yul waa casted as a SL and Na In-woo as a male. Now that is what you call a degrade.
I know that Song Hye-kyo's acting hardly leaves a united taste on viewers' palate so I can't really say about that, but she did wonderfully well here. However, Lee Do-hyun as ML when the better obvious choice, Park Sung-hoon, is there is like a degrade to me.

Summary of all these chitchat :- This one, this casting in All Shall Come True isn't a degrade.

Plus the potential to outact the FL, which has a very high chance of happening given her acting abilities.

Kim Eun-Sook writes great second leads.

In Goblin, they had the own story and their own love story.

In Mr Sunshine, it was the same. Their characters were important to the story, they had a backstory, a development and they were badass too.

Kim Seon-Ho became way more famous after his second lead role in Start-Up than in his first lead roles.

Sometimes a second lead role in a high profile drama, especially one with a hitmaker of an writer who is capable of making supporting roles that don't just exist to serve the leads, is just worth it for exposure and networking/connections. Someone like KES would have connections to well-known directors too.

Lee Dong-wook actually reached out to Kim Eun-sook for the reaper role.

The Glory worked out really well for PSH. The ML character is not that interesting. PSH had a much more interesting villain character, and I think got more attention than Lee Do-hyun for the role. Lim Ji-yeon got some buzz when she debuted with Obsessed, but despite some lead roles, she didn't get widespread recognition until The Glory.

I am not! It's just that he does those scenes so well!

I saw in a K-Drama discussion thread on FB that some women were complaining that K-Drama actors can't do screen kisses right.

ME: Ladies, what planet do you live on?

My theory is that because K-Dramas generally don't have explicit sex scenes, the actors really go for it in the kissing scenes - they make the most of the romantic vibes... and that gives us all the butterflies-in-tummy sensations that is needed for a romance series/movie to have that many explicit sex scenes in Western movies/tv series just can't capture.

And Ji Chang-Wook is the leader of the Smooch Masters pack. Hahaha!

They've clearly never seen a drama with Eric Mun, either!

4

I mean there is also Seo In Guk, Yoo Yeon Seok is one of the best in the business, and as always Gong Yoo. So I get it, Ji Chang Wook is a master at kissing and that particular loving look.

2

They were probably teenage girls only watching high school dramas

3

@kafiyah-bello I haven't seen Seo In Guk kissing but Yoo Yeon-Suk? WOOO! *fans self*

Funnily enough, Kim Dong-Wook is also REALLY good at it. (See YOU ARE MY SPRING).

3

@Midnight You know what's weird? I can't seem to think of any Western actor in memorable kissing scenes.

I mean, there are so many articles about the Top Ten K-Drama Kissing Experts but that's almost non-existent for Hollywood actors. Can't really think of any that do kissing scenes that curl our toes the way K-Drama actors do.

That was one of the things about K-Drama that really surprised me when I first started watching.

3

@9tailedvixen It is probably the same reason you mentioned above. Western shows don't rely on kissing scenes to curl your toes. Except their explicit scenes don't do it either. Oh! Beanies were talking about this too a few days ago. Because western shows aim more to attract young male viewers than female?

3

@Midnight - If this is true it explains:

1. Why so many cis-het men in real life are lousy kissers *coughcough*

2. What goes on in the cis-het male brain when it comes to their ideas of courtship and... it explains a lot.

But let's focus on happier things - like who would be your Top 5 K-Drama Oppas Who Kiss?

1

@vienibenmio I have never seen any drama with Eric Mun in it. Any recommendations of where to start?

0
2

@9tailedvixen My list is too long🤣 But to name a few, from the same age group for the sake of feeling organized:

Lee Dong Wook
Ju Ji Hun
Ji Sung
Jo Jung Suk
Lee Jin Wook

Those who watched the advance screening of the first 2 episodes (for promotional purposes) seems to love it.
I reminded myself to lower my expectations *side eye to syim19l* but I can't seem to lower it after seeing that 4m20s trailer and all those funny stillcuts. I love the five eagle brothers already and I'm so excited to watch the jo sisters with their niece!

I’m looking forward to Welcome to Samdalri the most but my batting average this year has been horrendous.
The shows I looked forward to the most have been disappointing (I’m looking at you Lies Hidden in my Garden, Stong Girl and Castaway Diva) and the shows I loved the most this year weren’t initially on my radar (Call it Love, Moving, Kidnapping Day, Doona).
Regardless- please no more randomly placed serial killers plot lines , and please please please No More Super Toxic Parents!!!.
If Korea wants to up its birthrate, it needs to start promoting healthy family dynamics.

I'm not a fan of famous writers going after breakout talents. I hope Ahn Eun-jin chooses her next drama carefully. Striking the iron while it's hot doesn't always work well for some. She is talented; she can rely on that and is equally well received as a talented theatre actress. She doesn't need a mainstream drama.
I wish that Park Eun-bin would have taken a different route after "Attorney Woo," but that's just me being over-protective.
