[Drama chat] Favorite K-drama lines

Thanks to all the Beanies who prompted this week’s chat topic — we might need more than a week, in fact, to chat about our favorite K-drama lines, because so many are great for so many different reasons.

I’ve certainly amassed my favorites over the years, from the “Aigooooo Kim Sajang!” of Answer Me 1988 (it’s useful in every social engagement, trust me), to the delightful one-liners, to the more introspective drama moments.

In that latter category, one I’ve always loved is from City Hunter. Our hero just had his whole world construct crash down around him and while he’s sitting in the aftermath he quietly tells himself: “Everything’s going to change now.” I’ve always love that for not only its narrative function, but the focus on the hero both announcing and embracing the change that’s to come after a big life event.

Drop some of your favorite K-drama lines and catchphrases in the comments.

"Gwaenchana, gwaenchana" from Welcome to Waikiki. The best pick-me-up line there ever was.

Ha! I was watching the American show LOST last night. They have a Korean couple there, speaking in Korean most of the times, and understood some few words already.

Then, I heard "gwaenchana". I had to giggle coz Welcome to Waikiki was the first thing that pop into my mind. 😄😄

What a line that was!

My absolute favourite quote in dramaland is, and I have said this a thousand times, when in Dinner Mate, Guwon tells Jaehyeok about the way he pursues DoHee: "Unrequited love is not real love, it's violence".

This one was used again in Run On by SeonGyeom who tells his father in such an emotional scene "Unwanted love is the same as violence".

To lighten up a bit I would add all the references to "Corn Salad" in Vincenzo.

‘Do you like Messi?’

On the serious side, the entire monologue from Jung Hwan in reply 98 around Ep 18.
It goes something like
“ # “In the end, fate and timing do not happen, out of coincidence. They are products of earnest, simple choices, that make up miraculous moments. Being resolute, making decisions without hesitation… that is what makes timing. He wanted her more than I did. And I should have been more courageous. It was not the traffic light’s fault. It was not timing. It was my hesitations.” – Jung Hwan”

Whoa, Jang Dong Yoon's character says almost the exact same thing in Daily Dose of Sunshine! I had to check to see if the screenwriters were the same 🙃

“I always thought timing was the issue — that I had missed the perfect moment. But that wasn’t the case. One of us had courage, and the other just didn’t. That’s all there is to it. And today, I’m blaming the timing yet again, when really I’m just being a coward.”

I love the poems often quoted in k-dramas.

In Goblin, quoting "The Physics of Love"

Mass is not proportional to volume.

That girl as small as a violet,
that girl who floats like a petal
pulls me toward her with a force
greater than the Earth’s mass...

In Hometown Cha-cha-cha, quoting "The Gatekeeper"

It’s my job to say, “You can’t do that here.”
It’s my job to deny your objective.
It’s my job to deny you the next day, too.
It’s my job to wait for you the following day to deny you again.
It’s my job to wait for you the day after that and fall in love with you.
So it’s my job to deny my love...

There are so many wonderful, memorable lines in K-dramas. This one really stands out for me:

잘생기면 다 오빠야. (If you're handsome, you're my oppa.)

Queen Ahn Yo-na from Kill Me, Heal Me

This one's dark but introspective.

If you want to die, then die. But die tomorrow. If you feel it’s hard for you tomorrow as well, then die the day after that. If you feel the same pain the day after that, even if you die the next day and the day after that, it’s not too late. If you live each day at a time like that, then a good day will definitely come. There will come a day where you’ll tell yourself, “I did a good thing by not killing myself back then.”

Oh Ri-jin to Ahn Yo-seob in Kill Me, Heal Me

and it doesnt make sense also it is complete opposite in folklore but "But the rock is dead, and the egg is alive. One day the stone will crumble, and a chick will hatch from an egg and walk on that soil. From Twenty Five Twenty One

“My diary from those days is filled with just love and friendship. A time when friendship and love were all that mattered in life. A time like that lasts only for a moment.”
Na Hee-Do

“A rowdy friendship and passionate love. Because those brief moments are what make your long life shine.”

“The less you know about the person, the deeper the conversation gets.” – Ko Yurim

“It was so noisy out there. But all I could hear was your voice.” – Baek Yijin

“It feels like I’ve found all the missing pieces in my world. I feel like I can befriend anything unfamiliar, and overcome difficulties that will come my way. I feel stronger.” – Na Heedo

“Our friendships are always excessive, we’re helpless in the face of love, and our failures are passionate. Anxiety, grief, jokes, and smiles come together to form a strange and irregular shape. Perhaps we’re currently standing at the center of our youths.” – Baek Yijin

“I’m going to give my all tomorrow. But you’re not the reason why I’m going to give my all. I’ll give it my all for myself. Because only I know how hard I’ve tried.” – Na Heedo

“What shocked me wasn’t mom’s love story, but her efforts. Her efforts that only she knew about. I saw how hard she worked rather than her glamor for the first time.” – Kim Minchae

“It feels better when I turn my tragedy into a comedy.” – Na Heedo

“I heard that every tragedy in life is a comedy if you see it from afar.” – Baek Yijin

“At times when I didn’t believe in myself, I believed in you who believed in me. That made things possible.” – Na Heedo

from My Mister

"If you get to know a person, if you get to know them, nothing they do bothers you. And I know you."
Dong Hoon

Every building is like a struggle between external and internal forces. Wind, weight, tremors, we have to take into account all external factors that may affect the building so the design has to be able to withstand all that...We always have to make sure that the internal forces can withstand the external forces. And life, in a way, is a struggle between internal and external forces too. No matter what happens, you'll be able to withstand anything if you have sufficient internal forces.

Everyone struggles in their lives trying to have things, so they live their entire lives trying to prove themselves to everyone, but nobody truly knows what they are gaining by doing that. And even if you do end up getting what you want, if the things that made you feel safe and the things that made 'you' start getting fractured, it's impossible to withstand.

“We are all living this life for the first time.”
Because this is my first life

@mmmmm The funny thing is that I’ve used both of those quotes at work. However, I never disclosed the source for fear that Kdramas might undermine my authority.

“I heard that every tragedy in life is a comedy if you see it from afar.”

One of my engineers was having a bad day. The tests that needed to pass, ended up failing. Instead of getting upset, I laughed at the failure and why it failed. I turned his tragedy into a comedy and made his day just slightly better.

“At times when I didn’t believe in myself, I believed in you who believed in me. That made things possible.”

I used this line on another engineer. I gave her an assignment and she came back very uncertain that she could complete it. I believed in her and that was enough. She did amazing.

There are so many amazing quotes but the ones that popped in my head first were two:

You From Another Star: Song-yi’s “Even if sometimes these feelings are too hard I sometimes wish I hadn’t met you; still, even if I was able to turn back time, I would choose to meet you, I would bicker with you, I would fall for you, and I would love you again.“ Then… Min-joon’s subsequent “okay” 🤣

You’re beautiful: Mi-nyu’s “Since today is the day you were born, it is a truly precious day. For being born, thank you.” Tae-kyung (on his very birthday which his mother forgot) just told him that because of his existence, she suffered and that essentially, he should be thankful that she even gave birth to him. Tae-kyung is one of my top 3 favourite characters of all time and even after over a decade I still remember so much about him lol. So well written and brilliantly acted. This scene really hit me hard for some reason.

Virtue, integrity, and courage are my priorities. I can be approached but never pushed; befriended but never coerced; killed but never shamed."

I still don't speak Korean, but I love the kissing scene in Because This is My First Life. (I'm saying "I still don't" because this scene would be much enhanced if I did, also it was one of my first k-dramas.) When the older male lead explains that the spontaneous smooch at the bus stop in the first episode was not a proper kiss, the lines made the whole scene for me. (If not the whole show,)

"That can't be called a kiss," he says, using the formal, polite ending.
"I get it, I was bad at it," the FL says somewhat sulkily.
"That's right, kissing is done like this."
[kissing happens with what I didn't realize at first was the traditional facial expressions from the FL--first surprise, then pleasure, etc.]
"Do you get it now? Or...should be do it more?"
"I would like to do it more."

I have a few from other dramas but I will just post the most recent one that I really liked. Its Eun Yu's speech to Eun Gyeol when he was being stubborn in ep16 of Twinkling Watermelon

"Put down the burden already.
It's not your burden to carry.
You forced yourself to take on the burden.
No one can live your life for you.
Let Yi Chan in 1995 figure things out on his own."

My favorite show for dialogue is My Mister. In a ten-minute stretch I just rewatched: "You listened to my pathetic life and still took my side", "I really wanted you to be happy", and "Once you know someone, it doesn't matter what they do. And I know you." And in an earlier episode, the chairman with his fawning entourage, "Anyway I was rejected, I'll go."

I love this, "I know you." When it's about people we love, the line can't be further from the truth.

My all time favourite lines are from the convos between Sookee halmeoni and in “Just between lovers”. They are both verbal pugilists who exchange unvarnished advice and engage in battle because love and worry about each other. My memory fails me here but there was one which I loved the most. It was about making mistakes in life and not surrendering to hopelessness.

Is it something about squirrel hiding their accorn and then forget where they hid it then later when it was hungry suddenly it found the accorn they hid? The conclusion is about blessing in disguise.

@stranger: I finally found the quote!
Halmeoni is in the hospital being visited and fussed over by her “grandchildren”. Gangdoo is grieving her impending death but is trying to remain as stoic as he can. His voice over says the following:

“Halmeoni said life is a repetition of regrets and failures. I sarcastically asked what is the point of living. Granny said it’s to regret and fail more wonderfully”.

That sounds like a spin from Irish writer Samuel Beckett: “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.' You won't believe what you can accomplish by attempting the impossible with the courage to repeatedly fail better."
Even though it might be inspired by it, it is wonderful used in the drama.

LOL, heading to YT right now - haven’t watched “100 Days My Prince” 😂

I guess, exasperated “YA!”s might work on cats, too (if the situation demands it). To make it a quote, I’d say Yina from “Hello My 20s/Age of Youth” pretty much nailed them. 😆

_ A few lines from Misaeng:

"A path is not simply for walking. Its purpose lies in moving forward and improving itself. A path that fails to do this is not a path. The path is open to everyone but not anyone can walk it".

"If you want to protect someone, you need to have the skills set first. There is no greater nuisance than intervening without the skills to help".

"Courage is not defined by readily jumping into risky situations. Avoiding these situations and silently going on your own path requires courage too".

"Just because you forget a dream, doesn't mean it stops existing. Just because you don't see the road, doesn't mean the road doesn't exist".

"What do you think life is? Life is a collection of choices. The choices you made in each moment make up the quality of your life".

"What you can forget is no longer a wound".

_ A few lines from Flower Boy Next Door:

"That woman becomes nervous when she is too happy. To that woman, happiness is like a child's game of blowing bubbles. The moment when she touches the bubbles, they burst. In front of happiness, that woman always gives up, before even reaching out her hand".

"That woman always speaks the most impressive lines when she is alone in her room".

"'This is hard on me', 'stay by my side'... Have you ever said those words to anyone before?".

"Understanding someone... That's something you can't do even though you love her".

"You asked me to film the world. The first world I filmed was you".

"Just one person can't change the world. But that person can become someone's world. A warm, shiny and full of peace world".

"Love is like a windup clock. When it's new, it will give you the exact time. When time passes and you forget to wind the springs, the clock will break and stop. He started winding up the springs so that the clock wouldn't stop for a long time".

_ From Queen Seon Deok:

"For I have no name. Princess, Crown Princess… even the scoundrels parading in the market have a name yet a ruler does not. All I am is “Her Majesty.” Nobody can call my name now. Calling my name means treason".

_ "Seventy paces to Deokman. Thirty paces to Deokman. Ten paces to Deokman".

Wow, the quotes from Misaeng are really good! I haven’t watched it but might do it now, tho where to find the time?😫

I also love the ones you chose from Flower Boy Next Door, looks like it’s also gonna be added to my ever growing to-watch list.

I don’t have it in me to commit to a long saeguk like Queen SeonDuk, would’ve checked it out tol.

Misaeng is a gem, Flower Boy Next Door is "my gem" (a very soothing show), and Queen Seon Deok is my favorite sageuk (it's full of great lines, I even watched the episodes taking notes because there were so wonderful lines and dialogues...).

It's ok not to be ok

“People are all hypocrites. We all live with a lot of hatred, but we act like that’s not the case.”

“You can’t get out once you’re trapped in the past. You won’t be able to see the door.”

“Your body is honest. When you’re in physical pain, you cry. But the heart is a liar. It stays quiet even when it’s hurting. Then, when you’re asleep, you finally weep and whimper like a dog.”

“Hurtful, painful memories. Only those with such memories buried in their hearts can become stronger, more passionate, and emotionally flexible. And only those can attain happiness.”

I’ve been tied up for way too long, so I forgot how to cut myself free.”

“Love is all about patience.”

Thanks to this drama chat I visited my tmblr, read 12834985359 quotes, cried, and now I want to rewatch a hundred shows. LOL

1. I actually… got sick while living according to other people’s standards. I thought everyone else was doing great, and I thought I was the only one who couldn’t do anything well, so it made me suffer. So now, I’m taking time to get close to myself, not to others. (I don’t want to do anything, 2022)

2. You don’t need their understanding. There’s no need for you to do that. Who cares? Let them see and believe what they want. It’s fine as long as you understand yourself. That’s already hard enough. (Our Beloved Summer, 2022).

3. If you want to be told that you made the right decision, that means that you think otherwise. If you want to be told so 500 times, it means you’ve thought about 500 times you were wrong. (You Are My Spring, 2021)

4. Like a building, relationships of all kinds require maintenance and care, or they’ll deteriorate. But the longer they last, the more beautiful and valuable they become. (Monthly Magazine Home, 2021)

5. I really want to get along with myself. I don’t want to love myself too much, but I don’t want to be too hard on myself either. I think it’s important to work hard on keeping a good balance… I want you to love yourself a little bit more. That’s how we can keep a long and healthy relationship. (Run On, 2020-2021).

6. I want to call the losing team, my team. Everyone always wants to call the winners their team. The losing team is always lonely and sad. Those who always fight but still always lose… I want to help them. (When My Love Blooms, 2020)

7. I don’t like complicated things. I just want to live simply counting up to about 5 or 6, so that I can finish calculating only by using my two thumbs. (Find Me in Your Memory, 2020)

8. We all born alone, but that’s why we can all be there for one another. My holo love (2020)

9. "I'm tired. I’m lonely. Help me". If you don’t hide them every time and insted talk right away about them, one person will listen. (A Piece of your mind, 2020).

10. As time passes, you tend to remember when you hurt someone more than whe someone hurt you. So don’t hurt someone too deeply. (Do you like Brahms? 2020)

11. Right know, I don’t know when to get off the bike or where to go, so I’m just pedaling with all my strength… because I don’t want to fall down. (When My Love Blooms, 2020)

I love deep existencial quotes, like the ones I just mentioned, but my favorite romantic line is the one from Coffee Prince that Gum Shoe mentioned. That scene was so freaking powerful. It can sound hilarious for people that didn't watch the show and only know the meme, but if you see everything that character went through to get to that moment and accept what that phrase meant... Damn. Best confession in kdramaland, imho.

I also find funny lines like "밥먹을래 나랑...

Oh, and the "너 같은 새끼는 fxxk you가 최고야" moment in Sweet Home is still ICONIC.
