You can only pick one: Hidden chaebol

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one hidden chaebol

DaebakGrits: This one was easy for me: Kim Young-ho (a.k.a John Kim, the super mysterious personal trainer of the rich and famous) from Oh My Venus. He’s not perfect, but he wouldn’t be a K-drama chaebol without a little angst and family drama, amirite? I think the thing I like the most about him is that he fell for Kang Joo-eun before she lost weight and became “beautiful” (by K-drama standards), and even though there were, as I recall, some somewhat questionable dieting and nutrition going on, there was at least an emphasis on Joo-eun’s health being more important to him than her body size. I think it says a lot about Young-ho’s character (and his professionalism) that he wasn’t patronizing or excessively impatient when coaching Joo-eun — but to be fair, she was mostly jovial and enthusiastic during the process. Honestly, these two are one of my all time favorite K-drama couples, and I absolutely adore how fitness brought them together.

Unit: The only hidden chaebol that comes to mind right now, is Louis from Shopping King Louis. After falling victim to dramaland’s amnesia trope, Louis goes from luxury chaebol king to a homeless bum. Still, he proves that you can take the man from his credit cards, but you cannot take his innate love for shopping from him. I stan a consistent king. Louis’ grandmother was turning Seoul upside down looking for him, but my boy was holed up in the female lead’s rooftop apartment running away from bugs, and looking for new ways to satisfy his shopping cravings — most times, at the expense of his equally poor female lead. There were a number of times I found his antics cringe and frustrating, but overall, he was really cute and endearing (thanks for this, Seo In-gook). PS: I can rewatch a number of dramas, but Shopping King Louis is not one of them. Do with this information as you please.

Dramaddictally: I’m going with Love in Contract, which has not one, but two, hidden chaebols. And if I’m forced to decide between them, I’m going with Kim Jae-young’s character because… his face. But seriously, this reserved and rich-people-hating chaebol ended up being my favorite character in the drama by the end (character — not ship), and that was a long way from where he started. Sure, his wardrobe was a little too much, but he never had the arrogance of a second-gen chaebol and was always dedicated to earning his own keep (hence hiding his identity). Plus, his whole lonely soul vibe got to me. Not only is he having trouble getting the girl, his own cat is rooting for the other male lead! Poor thing. I’m not easily won over by chaebols but in this case, he’s welcome to use my house as a hideout anytime (he certainly won’t run into any rich family members or paparazzi there).

Baek Ma-tan in Gaus Electronics. While it was clear he was from a rich family, a corporate chaebol family is one i didn't envisage.

He was certainly the funniest "hidden" chaebol I've seen. The memory of the scene where he quotes from a variety of kdramas to try to win over his love interest (including My Liberation Notes: "Worship Me") still makes me chuckle.

Omo, yes! He's probably the funniest chaebol in kdramaland. I love him.

If memory serves me right, he was kinda spoiled in a non-entitled way..and the dad is such a sweetie, i loved watching them together even when they argued.

For this prompt, I'd say that my heart will always go out to Kim Young-Kwan as Han Yoo-hyun in Hello, Me!. He's such a delight to watch, his reveal was so reluctant (and sad in its own way), and you want to root for him as a character--even though he's the rich guy--the whole way through.

I was going to identify exactly the same character! His relationship with the lunch cooks was funny and based on a genuine affection between the 3 of them. In fact, the one thing that really bothered me about that show is that the FL never really fell for him--they were a couple at the end, but she clearly wasn't as enamored as he was.

I think I’m gonna agree with Seon-ha about Hello, Me!. I was really surprised by how much I liked Choi Kang-hee and Kim Young-kwang’s warmth together. They didn’t have the type of crackling chemistry that makes me want to smush their faces together, but they were cute, and I always love when the rich guy is NOT a jerk.

Kim Young-kwang WAS an actual chaebol in that one, right? If not, then my vote transfers to Louie! To be honest, sometimes it’s hard for me to remember which drama characters are proper chaebols and which are just rich.

In that vein, my favorite hidden rich-but-not-chaebol-rich boy storyline is honestly from Dal-ja’s Spring. It was SO unexpected and hilarious how it was revealed that Lee Min-ki was being chased not by loan sharks (which would have been so k-drama) but by his grandfather, LOL. And Tae-bong doesn’t give off rich vibes at all and I love how much he doesn’t give a crap about social conventions.

He was! Third-generation, even. As @marysadanaga also remembered above, his dad was yet another hidden chaebol to our FL in the drama. Lots of men hiding their true wealth in Hello, Me!

I had to congratulate myself after cause I wouldn't say I liked melodramas, but Puppy-face Yoon Shi-yoon and bad boy Joo Won were quite interesting.

He was adorable, wasn't he?
Such a pure human being. While I watched that drama (it was 2022 😅) I thought that Tak-gu could probably ride a Kintoun Cloud (Dragon Ball) because of his pure heart.

Thanks for the reminder of that show! I usually can’t do melodramas or family dramas, but that show reeled me in the whole way through. It made me love Yoon Shi yoon forever.

I can't even remember any hidden chaebols haha
So going off the list others have mentioned, my choice would have to be John Kim. I think he is also the first hidden chaebol character that I've ever seen.

I don't remember when he fell for Kang Ju Eun's character; was it before the weight loss? I know they certainly had starks flying before then haha

Sidenote: Oh My Venus my first time ever seeing Shin Min Ah (as well as the rest of the cast)

I’ve got to go with Lee Yul on this one. I mean, yes, he’s technically a crown prince and not a chaebol but close enough. He was my first kdrama crown prince, so he already holds a special place in my heart, but I also just don’t get tired of the grumpy and cold ML who is also fair and just and a total softie. Add to that Yul’s totally ridiculous attempts to be a commoner, his cute bromance with Jung Jae-yoon, cuter romance with Yi-seo, and breathtaking eyebrows, and it’s a sure thing. That video where someone clipped together all the moments where he says “Oho!” is the gift that keeps on giving.

This has to be 100 Days My Prince right? If so, it took a whole lot of thinking to sift through the many Lee Yul's that have passed via dramaland.

The refrian "Oho" was the detail that helped to make sense of who Yi-seo and Jung Jae-yeon might be. Plus, I'm currently rewatching this - second episode.

Either Louis from Shopping King Louis or Baek Ma-tan from Gaus Electronics. I like my chaebols funny or at least a smidge bit pathetic. No need for these overly powerful guys to be both rich and perfect.

And yes, bonus for Love in Contract's Kim Jae-young. We could be besties who borrow from each other's closets. He needs a true friend and I need his clothes, we'd be a perfect match (platonic or otherwise).

Wow, great choices already! I especially like Hello, Me, because that whole show is so good, and Gaus Electronics, the parachuting...

In the subcategory of amnesiac hidden chaebol, I can think of Lovers of Haendae, but was his father a crime boss? (or is that a distinction without a difference?) so I'll pick another one as my only pick one, Anna Jo in Fantasy Couple.

Louie (Shopping King Louis) is my first choice. Unforgettable.

But since Kiara mentioned Kim Tak-gu (King of Baking), then this would be a tie: Louis and Tak-gu.
Both of them are among my favorite MLs.

(Btw, was Yoon Shi Yoon a hidden chaebol in "Me too, Flower"? I have not watched that drama).

Who could blame you!! He was my first K-bias too. Until this day, I think his character remains one of the coolest chaebols in Kdrama land. He is honest, upfront, smart (and sexy. Remember that shower scene?!). He doesn’t fall for the evil second female lead’s tricks. He gives his loved one space so that she can work out her own feeling and come to him on her own. He can criticise her when she is not right, but he backs her up and is always there for her. He treasures frienship and is good at his job. He is vulnerable in front of her and is not afraid to show it. Jang Dong Gun remains an actor I like very much even after 20 years thanks to this role.

Thanks to your description, my heart is swelling with love, again for him. I love everything about him and Chae Rim in that drama. Kind but not naive. He is the most mature and soft ML in romance drama IMO.
You can count on me in forgetting any shower scene, but was it the one where he was in a tub?

And Jang Dong Gun was 28 then, but compared to the flower boy beauty (which I also love) nowadays, he looked very mature and manly, and yes, he acted mature too.

That scene is a shower scene, the water running down his face, which we viewed from a side. He was brooding. It’s been a long time since I last saw the show, but I’m pretty sure he wasn’t in a tub.

Ahh, this one. I think this was when Sun Mi said that she would leave him to take care of Woo Jin after his suicide attempt. (???)

4

Its always So Ji Sub for me. So Kim Young Ho in Oh My Venus! Everything DaebakGrits wrote above. And that scene when Young ho was training showing off his muscles is living in my head rent free.

So Ji-Sub as Kim Young-Ho. Nobody else even comes close.

He’d also get my vote for Best Overt Chaebol, as Joo Joong-Won in Master’s Sun. I love a man with a big telescope! 🤭

I don't know whether an undercover author is a chaebol or not, but the one that impressed me A LOT is Choi Si Won as Shin Hyuk in She Was Pretty. Like he was the most weird, fun, and kind person as far as 'undercover' is concerned. While most chaebol heir usually had their major flaw in the beginning; famously being a jerk or lazy; he is the total opposite. And he sees and likes people as they are with all their flaws. I got swooned over his personality as I'm typing this.

You never said the drama had to be good. So I've got to pick the chaebol working as a janitor in 'Revolutionary Love' (2017).
Kang S-ra as the plucky Candy and Choi Si-won and the chaebol heir kicked out of the family mansion and forced to work as a janitor.

What makes this series stand out is the male lead started out as a narcissist delusional stalker and he NEVER CHANGED. He remained a narcissist delusional stalker right up to the final scene. And the second male lead was even worse! All the Candy female lead wanted to do was unionize the building janitors, forget about romance.

Even though Moonshine was train wreck of a show and he was only a supporting character, I fell hard for Byeon Woo Seok as the Crown Prince who is constantly sneaking out disguised as a nobleman. He was so cheeky and irreverent. This role made me take notice of the actor.

Also, does a female chaebol in a Chinese drama count? Because if so, Janice Wu was fabulous as the heiress who goes undercover as an employee at one of her family's subsidiaries. She was so independent, grounded and determined. I love how she wasn't addicted to her family's money and status. Just an overall great character and portrayal.

You know who came to mind? Manager Kim from She Was Pretty. You know, the nephew of Most's Editor 😆😆😆

But honestly, my pick is Louis XXV! He's lovable, easy to get along with, drops truths on the character in an interesting way. I dare say he was both the main character and the foil for all every character in the drama. He was open minded, loving and consistent. Louis all the way!!!
(But I'm not Go Bok shil though. Beach Better Have My Money. That girl has the patience of a saint!)
