Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 7-8

What a delicious mess! Last week’s puzzling behaviors are solved, lighting up the way for new encounters, and dare I say a love square. If you like sleights of hand, halls of mirrors, and other tricks you can whip out at a party, this one’s for you. But don’t forget your hanky because when this drama decides to do heart, it does it right.

EPISODES 7-8

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 7-8

Now it all makes sense! Here I was glum-faced that Se-kyung and Chung-ah weren’t at all chummy last week, but as it turns out, it’s because they don’t actually know each other. Huh? If you’re scratching your head, let me explain. The drama pulled a fast one but the reveal is pretty fun — and the evidence actually lines up.

The person we were calling Se-kyung last week in the 1995 timeline — the one who returned to Korea just days after she moved to New York — is actually OHN EUN-YOO (also Seol In-ah), the daughter of Se-kyung in the 2023 timeline. Eun-yoo looks so much like her mother at 18 that no one in 1995 can tell the difference. Plus, they’re both cello mavens so it’s an easy switcheroo. (Eun-yoo narrates, “You must have suspected this.” Uh, no, I didn’t. Because it’s nuts!)

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 7-8

We learn that Eun-yoo traveled through time in almost exactly the same way that Eun-gyeol did. Each of them got into a massive fight with their parents, noticed a double moon in the sky, and then sold their beloved instrument at the magical La Vida music shop before stepping out the door and into 1995. In Eun-yoo’s case, she finds herself at the airport in Korea — after selling her cello in New York (ohhh that explains the backward flight info on her bag tag).

Part of what we learned about Eun-yoo’s predicament last week is actually true, though. She did run away from home and she is thinking about ending her own life. All the fighting with her parents has been rough on her. In 1995 and with nowhere else to go, she starts staying at her mother’s vacant childhood home until she develops a plan. When Eun-gyeol mistakenly called her Se-kyung in the street last week, the answer came to her: she’ll impersonate her mom and try to change her life. So, now we know 1) why she was acting flighty and 2) why she didn’t seek out Chung-ah.

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 7-8

The other riddle that’s solved is why the heck she’s interested in Yi-chan all of a sudden. To explain this, we learn a sad story about Se-kyung after she left Korea in the original timeline. Basically, she moved to New York, married a doctor, had Eun-yoo, and gave up on cello. She’s regretted it ever since and Eun-yoo has felt the burden and blame of it her entire life.

Se-kyung and her husband divorce, she and Eun-yoo move back to Korea, and Se-kyung isn’t a nice mom. Eun-yoo feels like she has to succeed all the time in order for her mother to love her (which is even sadder because we know Se-kyung is repeating what was done to her as a kid). With all Se-kyung’s drunken craziness and regret, she talks constantly about her first love — who was in a band. She wishes she married him instead of Eun-yoo’s father.

Okay, here’s where Eun-yoo’s plan comes in. If she can get Se-kyung together with her first love, Se-kyung will grow up to have a happy life and never marry Eun-yoo’s father. At the same time, Eun-yoo will never be born. That way, she can carry out her depressive wish to not exist in as poetic of a way as possible.

The problem — because you know there is one — is that she thinks Yi-chan is Se-kyung’s first love. But Se-kyung had a boyfriend when the drama started, who was also in a band. Eun-yoo gets a hint that she’s hot on the wrong trail when the Time Master dude from La Vida lights up her nearest payphone with one of his cryptic calls. He asks if she’s sure she found the right guy. She’s not sure — and when the story really takes off this week, she’s trying to figure out which of the other band members it could be if it’s not Yi-chan (which is just a way for us to have a cuteness parade as she goes on individual dates with them).

The one person she can’t put to the test is Eun-gyeol because he’s still knocked out in the hospital and no one knows where he is. And Eun-gyeol’s story this week is even crazier than Eun-yoo’s. When he wakes up, he’s in the home of the wealthy family that owns Jinsung Instruments – the ones behind the competition that electrocuted him. They’re keeping him at home to avoid bad press, and all the people he deals with there are just plain awful.

On his way out of the house, he passes by Chung-ah as she enters. He spots the name tag on her uniform and starts chasing after her yelling, “Mom!” (Yeah, no one’s going to think you’re loony.) In response, he gets locked up (figures) in a guarded room when he refuses to leave the premises until he can meet with Chung-ah.

To backtrack a little, Chung-ah is fine after her fever last week. Yi-chan rushed her to the ER, apologized for being a jerk before, and then paid the hospital bill and asked her out for noodles — in a friendly way. Chung-ah goes reluctantly, worried that he’s only pitying her, but softens up when he writes nice messages on a notepad for her. By now, he’s realized that she has the same name as the girl Eun-gyeol was screaming he was supposed to be in love with. Too bad Eun-gyeol isn’t around anymore so he can ask what’s up with that.

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 7-8

Back to Eun-gyeol in a guarded room. When he hears Chung-ah being abused outside the door (by the evil chairwoman and her daughter), he headbutts the guard to escape and finds his young mom getting slapped across the face. After grabbing the witchy woman’s hand and protecting Chung-ah, he uses sign language to try to communicate with her directly. (Wow, I cried. The compassion in this scene of Eun-gyeol trying to enter Chung-ah’s dark world, and boxing everyone else out, just got to me).

But Chung-ah doesn’t understand him. Sign language has been forbidden in her house since her mother left all those years ago. She only knows a few words (like “mom” — which he’s still incessantly calling her). In the end — and giving us as little information as possible about this family’s weird backstory — Eun-gyeol convinces the Jinsung Chairman, YOON GEON-HYUNG (Kim Tae-woo), to allow him to teach Chung-ah sign language in secret. Part of the deal is that he’ll attend school with her, and so, we see him suit up in a spiffy new high school uniform.

The other character to discuss is Yi-chan. After their tiff last week, he starts to have a change of heart about Eun-gyeol when he learns that Eun-gyeol was saving to buy him a guitar so he can enjoy his last days of youth. This moves him enough to go out looking for Eun-gyeol alone. He puts up missing posters, offers a reward, and then gets lured into an alley and beaten unconscious for the money.

Chung-ah discovers him left for dead and runs to get help, bumping into Eun-yoo just at the right moment. Chung-ah grabs her, thinking it’s Se-kyung, and Eun-yoo is able to yell for help, which has Chung-ah looking dejected as she leaves. But when Yi-chan finds out Chung-ah is the one who found him (in a funny scene where Eun-yoo learns Chung-ah is supposed to be her friend), he goes to Chung-ah’s family estate to say thank you — even learning how to say it in sign language (aww). Unfortunately, the wicked people she lives with won’t let him see her.

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 7-8

We end with Yi-chan and Eun-yoo both looking for Eun-gyeol. Yi-chan wants to apologize and get the band back together and Eun-yoo wants to know if Eun-gyeol might actually be her mom’s first love. Eun-yoo runs into him first, and it’s clear these two are starting to have eyes for each other. She gets nowhere in her mission to decode if he’s her mom’s ex-beau, and he upsets her by saying he dislikes her because she won’t stay away from Yi-chan.

Finally, Eun-yoo sees Eun-gyeol escorting Chung-ah to school and calls Yi-chan to report Eun-gyeol’s whereabouts. Yi-chan arrives to the school with the rest of the band to play a song for Eun-gyeol and say he’s sorry. He asks Eun-gyeol to rejoin the band. Eun-gyeol glances at Chung-ah before answering that he’ll come back on the condition that Yi-chan stops seeing Se-kyung. Yi-chan is shocked, but not as much as when Eun-gyeol says that it’s because he likes Se-kyung — who’s standing right there to hear it (in the form of Eun-yoo). And just like that, we have a love square!

I love this turnaround! We’re going to have ourselves a 2023 romance between Eun-yoo and Eun-gyeol! I didn’t see it coming but the minute it was introduced I was so onboard. All the setting up and pulling apart we did last week was worth it. Admittedly, I was skeptical of the bait and switch, but there’s nothing like a blooming love to make me feel energized again.

Also, I love the scenes between Eun-gyeol and Chung-ah. She’s my favorite character anyway, but all the heartwarming stuff about giving her world back to her through sign language is poking me in the heart. And Shin Eun-soo is doing a lovely job of conveying her character’s emotions without using any words.

With only half of our story complete, I think we’re in for a lot more surprises. I’m rooting for Yi-chan and Chung-ah, of course, but I’m also really sad about Se-kyung’s life story. I don’t want the future to change — especially not after that beautiful speech Eun-gyeol gave about how his parents communicate with each other and how his mom doesn’t feel alone. But I could get behind changes for Se-kyung. The problem is: is there a way to improve Se-kyung’s future and save Eun-yoo? I’ll be sticking around to see what parlor tricks they drum up to solve that one.

1. Cheong Ha and Eun Gyeol finally together!!

It made me sad that Eun Gyeol had to witness all the abuse his mom suffered in the past. I suppose his mom never talked about her "family" or school life because she didn't want to share those painful memories with her kids. Or maybe because she didn't wanted them pitying her? Idk, but whatever reason she had it's understandable. Her "family" was trash.

Anyway, it was nice watching Eun Gyeol protecting his mom. The speech he gave his grandfather made me cry. And then when he told Cheong Ha his name and she made the sign...😭

2. Yi Chan and Eun Yul are hilarious together. I hope they become besties. I also love the whole band dynamic and how Eun Yul is part of their group.
They're fun to watch. Super cute. I loved the hospital scenes.

3. Dear Eun Gyeol. You have nothing to worry about. There's no way the future changes and your dad marries another person. You still exist! That proves your mom and dad got together. Remember how babies are made? Yeah, it's impossible your mom changes. Don't worry.

4. I thought we were going to start moving on from Yi Chan's crush on Se Kyeong, but I guess they're going to use that to move the story along till the end. I wouldn't be surprised if the parents get together in the last 10 minutes or something like that. We only get like one 30 seconds scene between those two per episode (or per week?).

...I just hope we get more Cheong Ha and Eun Gyeol moments next week. And I hope the "love triangle" problem doesn't last, I really think the story would progress better if they stop using Se Kyeong's character as an obstacle.

The funny thing is that Eun Yul is the only one that should be having problems because of Se Kyeong. As far as I know, a person can't be in two places at the same time. But she she lives in her mom's house, goes to her dad's hospital and now she's going to school???

Someone has to recognize her and start asking questions. There's no way Se Kyeong's parents won't get a call from her the school or her dad won't hear about Se Kyeong being back.

But the biggest problem is: how is Eun Yul going to make her mother's first love fall for her and send him to the USA to seduce her mom??? That's my major question.

Her plan wouldn't work even in a show like A Time Called You. Even tho the FLs shared the same memories at one point, the ML only liked one girl. Why? Because they're different people. It doesn't matter if the guy falls in love with Eun Yul, that doesn't affect Se Kyeong. At all.

The best she can do is make her dad marry another girl, imo.

But that also confuse me. We know Eun Yul and Eun Gyeol (Eun couple?) are endgame. They have to meet in the future. So Eun Yul can't separate her parents... And she can't also meet them... She doesn't have other relatives... Wait. What is she doing in the past? Is she supposed to enjoy one year of freedom and get a boyfriend? Okay, I should...

😂😂😂 Spot on about the flaws in Eun Yu's plan. IMO, it is as weak as her character writing. If not for the goofy parts in the last two episodes, I would have kept hating her character for coming between Yi Chan and Chung Ah.

Seol In Ah's talents are getting wasted here and I think the PD/writer must have lots of luck on their side to have gotten her onboard because she is really hard selling her dual role which would have fallen flat in the hands of a rookie actor.

Same. I couldn't stand her last week. But watching her being all "young, dumb, broke high school kids" with Yi Chan and the rest of the band was fun.

I think it's better when she just acts like a regular teenage that's having fun with her friends, than when she's trying to delete herself from existence, especially since she's doing a terrible job at it and it's getting painful to watch.

I'm still trying to figure out why she couldn't just ask the boys "do you like spicy food?". If she thought the guys were going to lie to her, then she could've asked "hey, I remember eating some tasty spicy food with someone, was it you?" or just a simple "have we eating together before?". That would've make everything easier for her since her mom didn't know anyone from the band expect for Yi Chan and Eun Gyeol and she never ate with them.
Her plans never make sense.

But yeah, Seol In Ah is great.
And maybe she thought it would be fun to play two different roles?

The spicy food plan was as silly as her calling the "Fate/Magic Guy" and warning him to give clues about her mom's first love😂😂

We are all forgetting that it is Se Kyung who is smart and not her daughter. Maybe this is why they have same person playing the mom and the daughter.

Eun Yu's plan is very flawed. She doesnt even know who her Mom's first love is. Its possible it was her Dad all along. He was also in a band and one she was not aware of.

Cheong Ha and Eun Gyeol are my favorite characters. Their scenes together were so emotionally charged. I want to see more of their interactions next week. Poor Cheong Ha needs to feel that there is someone on her side and whom can she can communicate to. EG definitely fits the bill and I hope he will be successful in what he promised the Chairman.

Exactly. 🥺
I really wanted to know Cheong Ha's thoughts and feelings after her first class with Eun Gyeol.

It was the first time someone talked to in sign language since she was separated from her mom. I wanted to see some kind of reaction, I wanted to know if she was curious about Eun Gyeol, if she had questions. Especially since Eun Gyeol was looking at her with those sad puppy eyes.

The preview of next week episodes got me scared. It seemed like they're going to focus on the love triangle.

I really hope that Eun Gyeol going to Cheong Ha's school doesn't become all about the Eun-Eun couple. I really want to see Cheong Ha and Eun Gyeol interact more.

3

I have my suspicion that what adult Se-kyung missed wasn't anyone specific, but the entirety of her youth, where she was popular and lauded as the cello goddess and she could love her then-dreamy-boyfriend (who I believe was her ex-husband) without the pressure of making marriage work.

I wonder if the point of this whole time travel was not about changing anything but simply giving these kids a glimpse into their parents' respective life so they could deal with their present time in a better, more informed way.

The problem I have is that I feel like that conclusion can only work for Eun Gyeol but not Eun Yu.

Like you said, Se Kyeong Lost her chance to enjoy her youth. She tried to replace her parents' lost daughter, she was afraid of being abandoned, and she felt this resentment against her birth-father. She tried her best to be perfect and be loved, but it seems like her plan didn't work.

I feel like she's full of regrets for not being able to truly enjoy her life instead of living someone else's life.

But Eun Yu doesn't know that, she will never know that. At least not in 1995 Korea.

Eun Gyeol has the chance to hang out with his parents and meet new relatives. But Eun Yu is living under her mother's name. And she's hiding from her dad and anyone else that could know her mom.
She's just living and enjoying the youth her mom never had. Well, the youth both of them never had, since Se Kyeong was practically repeating her story with Eun Yu.

Sekyung/Eunyu's story makes my head hurt. I would rather Eunyu was not a time traveller and just a carefree girl who has less convoluted relationships with everyone.

4

Ahhhh, the birth father! I forgot about him. Eun Yoo & him are bound to meet (I'm guessing through Eun Gyeol) and have no clue who he is.

Now I'm wondering if her journey to the past is supposed to help her learn about this side of her mother.

Otherwise, what would be the point really? Her finding and dating her mom's first love doesn't magically make Se Kyung date him; Se Kyung is still in another country and still living her life.

I think Eun Yoo's plot/introduction is the weakest because nothing she does would change Se Kyung's life, just Eun Gyeol's (as well as Yi Chan & Cheong Ah's).

Say she does break up with dad for being a flirt, if real Se Kyung reached out to him, that would just lead to confusion.

I like Eun Yoo as a foil to Eun Gyeol not so much her own character.

6

@ayrulent I feel the same, her character works better without the time traveller element.

@britney I think you're right, that's the only option we have now. If she meets her grandfather that would give her a little more perspective.

I think she would be able to know something about her mother that even adult Se Kyeong doesn't know.
Se Kyeong never got to talk with her birth father. I don't think she knows much about him or her birth mother or way she was put on adoption.

If Eun Yoo meets haraboji, she will hear the story her mom never heard.

5

“But the biggest problem is: how is Eun Yul going to make her mother's first love fall for her and send him to the USA to seduce her mom??? That's my major question”.

Idk why, but I keep imagining this scene where Eun Yu and Eun Gyeol find out that they're from the future and they tell each other their plans. Then Eun Gyeol takes a step back, looks at Eun Yu for 10 seconds and asks "and how are you going to explain to your mom's first love that he has to go the US and that he has to win your heart? ...And how are you going to explain Se Kyeong ahjumma not being able to remember anything that happened between them in Korea?".

I just want to watch a scene like that.

In A Time Called You the girls shared the same body and memories, so it would be easy to trick othe people.
In this show there's two girls with the same name and face in two different countries. The events that happen in Korea have nothing to do with the girl from the US. They can't share memories and experiences. Also, at one point someone has to find out that the girl in Korea isn't the real one.
No way she can be registered in two schools and her parents won't know it.

Oof! The family bits are really the heart of the drama. The sign interaction scene between Eun Gyeol and Chung Ah made me teary eyed. Everything from the dialogue delivery, acting to scene transition between them was so lovely ❤ I thought I wouldn't miss Eun Gyeol's presence because I am more behind the parents' story, but I realized he is the bridge that connects the story. The bandmates in 1995 are already a much better people than the 2023 bandmates. Eun Yu is a lot likeable when she is reassessing her decisions in a comic way than sabotaging Yi Chan's life. I don't care for Eun Gyeol and Eun Yu's love story, but it better not cause a rift between the dad and son.

I am curious about the reason why Yi Chan is the past trying to achieve some non-existing mission when he is already a good, mature kid with some misunderstandings. What more growth does this kid require to appreciate his parents even more than he already does?

The bandmates are lovely.
I hope that when he comes back to 2023, he decides to go solo or change bands.

At the end, you mean Eun Gyeol?
I think Eun Gyeol problems can only get fixed in 2023, after talking with his parents. So wtv happens in 1995, it's something unrelated to his situation in 2023. At least for me.

The only thing that I can think he can learn from this experience is to understand his parents backgrounds and how that probably affected the way they raised him? His mom never got to express herself as a kid or teenager and his dad suddenly lost his hearing because of an accident.

But again, I think he could've figure that out just talking with his parents, 🤣 so yeah, from my perspective, both timelines are totally separated. At least for now.

I think I’m more sympathetic because, uh, I just couldn’t talk to my parents at all at that age. I still struggle. 😅 A different context but I carried the weight of their expectations and sacrifice and it was heavy. This show made me think what it would be like to go back and see their struggles. And a lived experience carries much more weight that one recounted. I can only hope I would have half of Eun-Gyeol’s strength to make it better for his parents.

Being able to be part of their lives in that period of time, watching everything with this own eyes and sharing the pain is totally different than hearing a story.

But I still wonder how it would've been if wasn't a fantasy story. What would've happened after his fight with his dad.

In several stories of immigrant children, they describe the weight of their parents' expectations and needs (including acting as translators). Sometimes, they rebelled, rejecting their obligations. Sometimes, they subsumed their desires for their parents. Either way, damaging the relationships.

Ofc, it’s not a perfect analogy. And it’s a kdrama. So a truck of doom is more likely to resolve the dilemma. Or time travel. LOL.

A random thought occurred to me. Because no matter how much filter is used, Ryeoun and Seol In-ah don’t look like teenagers. If they had, would their sometimes immature behaviors have been easier to accept?

3

Actually, I got used to it. I see them as teenagers, and I don't really have a problem with them when they act as regular teenagers.

I actually had a problem with Yi Chan, but that's mostly my fault I guess. I never could stand kids talking about some illogical crush 24/7. Not even when I was a teenager. LOL

Back to the point, I was excited to see this show handle the situation without a truck of doom or time travel because, like you said, this is a drama and dramas have happy endings. People learn, people change and problems get fixed in dramas.

So having this "drama chance" with characters and nice and loving as Eun Gyeol parents, it was the golden opportunity to show a healthy solution to this conflict. It was a chance to see parents and kids communicating and understanding each other. Especially in this case, with a family we rarely see in kdramas.

Tbh, I almost forgot he was a CODA kid since he has been spending all the show with his teenage dad that can hear.
I only remembered the main conflict of the show this week, after seeing him with Cheong Ha and her horrible "family".

3

Yes, yes, the love story between Eun Gyeol and his parents is the best part of this drama. You can see how much he loves them.

Thanks @dramaddictally for the weecap. I am in this for Eungyeol’s family dynamics and loved the return to the present seeing everyone happy until the wrong mum came in!
I hope Chungha gets to meet her mum again because of Eungyeol’s random arrival changing the future. I am really looking forward to seeing Chungha front and centre in her love story with Yichan.
The rival school band turning up to play a serenade was such great scene.

I love how the drama balances the emotional tone throughout. My favourite scene was the signing scene between son and mother as he vows to teach her what she taught him. I also loved the hospital scenes with Yichan engaging with the other patients, knowing his friends were hiding and telling his one man fight against the hordes.

I am calling it now, mid series, knowing that I may end up eating my words, but this is my K drama of 2023.

A 2023 romance between Eun-yu and Eun-gyeol will certainly be interesting because by all accounts she matches the description of Eun-ho's girlfriend - cello player + pretending to be hearing impaired 😅! This show sure loves its love triangles and squares 😂.

I loved the Eun-gyeol and Chung-ah scenes this week. I've been wanting more Chung-ah and it was so lovely to see her slowly begin to open up with Eun-gyeol's help. We're at the halfway mark and there's never a dull moment in this show. Loving it!

I still have hope that we will see more of Chung Ha now that Eun Gyeol will be staying by her side. He has lots of role to play, wingman for his Dad for Mom, block faux-SeKyung-YC interactions, lead guitarist, and translator/bodyguard of Chung Ha.
I have little hope for Eun Ho, I fear we will only see him when EG dreams again, flashbacks or returns back to the present timeline.

4

And how they made Chung-Ah just an incubator for her kids. You change the mum but the kids don't change!

2

@kurama I think it was all Eun-gyeol’s dream? Or nightmare. Not meant to be realistic at all.

6

Prior to ep8, I have a hard time picking my favorite couple, Eun Gyeol and Yi Chan, Eun Gyeol and Eun Yu or Yi Chan and Chung Ah.
But I think this last episode, I was blindsided by Eun Gyeol and Chung Ah. His love for his mother was so unconditional that I feel emotional whenever they are together. Their scenes were my favorite despite absolutely loving the serenade scene in the end of ep8. That scene was iconic.
I can't wait for stirrings of jealousy of Yi Chan's part when he witnesses how sweet Eun Gyeol is to Chung Ah. That will prompt YC to rethink who really has the place in his heart, Seo Kyeong, Chung Ah or Eun Gyeol (I am kidding on EG).
Eun Gyeol and Eun Yu is of course the traditional OTP so will always have a special place in my heart. I must've replayed their shouting fest of Ahjumma and Ahjusshi a few times. I will always have a soft spot for enemies-to-lovers storylines. So once it was established that Se Kyeong is Eun Yu, then I am all for this time traveling pair.
But of course lets not forget our cute couple Yi Chan and Chung Ah. YC has been making up for his initial awful treatment of her. The misunderstanding with the ticket and him yelling at her. I am all for all his cute antics just to get her to forgive him.
Now for that serenade scene, I love that the boys were wooing Eun Gyeol to come back to them. There is nothing cuter than a sincere and heartfelt plea.

Eun-gyeol and Chung-ah is also my most favorite couple so far. They are just extra lovely and sweet, and it touched something deep in my heart how Eun-gyeol's sincerity and vulnerability sparked some rare emotions in Chung-ah's eyes. It's like watching her coming alive again, and I love it with all my heart.

I like that "watching her coming alive again". I did want Chung Ah to feel like she belong somewhere and come into her own.
I do think Chung Ah can sense that sincerity with EG but he still has to earn that trust so she will open up to him.
For now EG, is the one in the best position to protect and bridge that communciation gap for her. I do want to see them be the best of friends.

Hahaha. This week some people talked about how Yi Chan's dramatic reaction to Eun Gyeol's disappearance made it seem like the boy was filming a BL or something. LOL. That's obviously impossible, but I gotta admit that the father-son relationship is probably the only one with some deepness, so far.

His interest in Se Kyeong/Eun Yu is superficial, and his love line with Cheong Ha hasn't even started. The other relationships are just starting (Eun Gyeol-Cheong Ha, Eun Gyeol-Eun Yu) or they actually fell apart (Cheong Ha-Se Kyeong). So I feel like Eun Gyeol and Yi Chan have the strongest connection.

But after this week, I feel like Eun Gyeol and Cheong Ha are going to be my favorite duo from now on.

And yes!! The serenade scene was so lovely. 🥺☺️

Eun Gyeol-Cheong Ha is definitely stealing my attention away from Eun Gyeol-Yi Chan. As much as I enjoyed the father-son shenanigans, just think its Cheong Ha's turn now. Our girl needs the love and attention from her son.
I feel bad for her home situation and I hope it will improve soon. Either she finds her mom or the chairman divorces the evil stepmother for his daughter.

The one thing that I really love about this drama was the strong sense of youth that permeated all its scenes. I'm probably in the minority, but I like how the teenagers' brand of impulsiveness amidst the pressure for them to make life-changing decisions (not to mention the particular pressure for both Eun-yu and Eun-gyeol about literally changing the future as they know it) stayed as the core spirit of this story. It tinged everything with optimism, no matter how dire and tragic the real situation was, and I'm honestly a fan. It was clearly a different take on this familiar time slip concept, and I'm here for all the shenanigans that will ensue.

In fact, this spirit of youth was specifically my reason for choosing to enjoy Seol In-ah's depiction of On Eun-yu. At first I thought something in her delivery just didn't blend well with the rest of the cast. But then I realized that maybe it was... intentional? I like her as Se-kyung, where her loneliness and her burden to be loved by her adopted parents was palpable, and yet it didn't stop her to be caring and genuinely interested in building a friendship with Chung-ah. And yet, there was a sense of detachment when she returned as Eun-yu, and coming from a girl so determined to live as recklessly as possible (which was already a common problem among teenagers, before we even added in the tons of problematic family dynamic she has to faced daily), I guess it made sense.

Eun-yu wasn't even capable of thinking whose lives she might inadvertently changed irrevocably by her selfish meddling. She couldn't think beyond alleviating her own pain and resentment over the selfish adults in her life, who somehow saw it fit to live vicariously (and demandingly) through her for all her life. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it did feel like she hid her disappointment and anger and loneliness behind her determined cheerfulness in the "harmless" matchmaking between her mom and her dreamy first love (though even there, she didn't seem to think much about how to make it happened properly, given the fact that her mother wasn't even aware of her future daughter masquerading as her back in South Korea). I would definitely take issue if she was older, but from a teenager who was in over her head and facing a potential change of the future that seemed abstract at best, I could let a lot slide.

On the other hand, we have another time traveler in Eun-gyeol, and while his goal seemed more well thought-out, I love that he was just as impulsive. The way he reacted to Yi-chan's immaturity (it was a lovely touch though, how this unexpected moment triggered a much needed growing up in Yi-chan), the determined way he entered his young mom's life to give her world back a few years earlier than in the original timeline, and the way he desperately threw a wrench in Yichan-Sekyung possible coupling. Ryeoun always brought with him his A++ game whenever he has a scene with his young parents, and he didn't...

... and he didn't disappoint. If I thought all his interactions with Yi-chan was already poignant, the one between him and Chung-ah, which frankly I've waited to happen for the last 6 eps, that was poignant with capital P and I want so much more of it. *arming myself with rolls of tissue*

Our time-traveler weren't the only ones hoarding the impulsive tendency, though. Because I'm loving the way Yi-chan tend to hyper focus on things once it caught his attention. I was squealing almost non stop at the way Yi-chan tried to forge a connection with Chung-ah despite the limitation of their communication. From carefully written messages, made-up gestures, to him learning some sign language to be able to say all the important things to her. And I definitely noticed how elated he was to catch her smiling for the first time. They are just too cute.

Last but not least, shout out to the directing. The way it effortlessly go back and forth between heart-wrenchingly profound and gut-bustingly funny was simply *chef's kiss*. I couldn't stop cackling at the way the drama reenacted Yi-chan's exaggerated story telling: with actors changing props and action in the middle of ongoing scene, while we can hear his friends' sarcastic remarks over his empty bragging, not to mention the dramatic and hilarious dubbing.

I can't wait for the next eps. Judging from the preview, we are in for a doozy ride.

Very beautifully said 👏 I had a hard time last week with adjusting to Eun-yoo's character, but this week made me realise a lot of the points you touched on. Especially as you pointed out, they're teenagers! So the impulsiveness, recklessness, maybe-not-thinking-about-things-thoroughly and one-track mindedness is very on brand in general, and then you add in all the layers of their family dynamics and background and it starts to make more sense. While I was initially a bit like 'gosh she's a tad dramatic', I thought back to just how insanely dramatic and also rebellious I was as a teen over the tiniest of issues too, not anything comparable to EY's family situation or the pressure she feels at home etc - it'd be unreasonable to expect any of the kids in this show to suddenly start acting like super rational and flawless humans!

But I'm finally at the age where I can fondly watch these bunch of teenagers trying their messy best to overcome whatever life threw at them. Their impulsiveness and recklessness made me feel nostalgic instead of exasperated, and I'm ready to let the drama bring me wherever it wanted to.

I’ll join you in the minority section. I’m not at all surprised at an angsty, self-destructive, nay, suicidal teen thrown into an impossible scenario and not having a well thought out, logical plan.

Behind the faux cheerfulness, there’s a child in a lot of pain lashing out. And I’m looking forward to see how she learns and grows over the course of the drama. But unlike EG, she’s been shortchanged. I wish she’d had a chance to witness her mother’s pain and understand how she became who she did. But that’s not the story we have. She’ll have to grow on her own. I’m rooting for her.

I do wish Eun-yu got the chance to relearn some things about her mother, but she probably needs a different type of experience or knowledge to grow up without repeating the bitter history. We still have another 8 eps to go though, and anything can happen in that long span of time, including possible interaction with her mom's old friends and the repercussion she might face for impersonating her mom.

Part of me feels that even if she saw her mother's pain, it's a bigger hurdle for EY to do something about it. 2023 Sekyung is a functioning alcoholic who is pretty much inflicting emotional abuse on her daughter, particularly in drunken tirades, and she doesn't seem truly apologetic about it. EG just needs a heart to heart talk with his parents. I hope a trace of EY and EG still remains in the past even when they return to the present...something that makes a tiny, but positive impact on the present.

I am not sure if we are indeed a minority, but if we are , then I hope the majority will indeed rewatch/watch this with the same lens. This is a youth / teenage drama after all, so we need the kids to act like regular kids. And so far, viewing this show with that lens, the characters and their action make sense.

I don't agree. Teenagers in the 90' and teenagers in the 2020' are very different. So Yi-Chan and Chung-Ah are credible as teen in 90' but for the 2 other, their lack of questionning about the consequences of their act is not justified for me. They're 18 years old, not 12. She forgot about her father? He's the only one she had a good relationship with but she never thought about him and the consequences on his life. She didn't think about the lives she will change.

1

Ah well, there you go Jingbee.

Perhaps we know different teens in 2023 Kurama? Plenty of clueless, messy and hormonal ones around me unfortunately (and sometimes really smart as well tho). Should I get them to watch more k-dramas on what to do (or not) should they go time-traveling? 😂

As for the father, she was very mad at him and ignoring him just before she was thrown into time travel. And when she does see him in the past, it just confirmed her negative opinion of him (flirting now, cheating on her mum later).

5

@indyfan

Today teenagers have access to informations in one click, they are connected to the whole world, they spend a lot time on their phone, etc. 12 years old kids of today have already been confronted to sexe by pictures, videos, etc.

Teenagers watched every Marvel/DC movies, played video games, read comics/mangas, they don't need Kdrama to see stories about time travel. 😉

1

Ha ha! Yes. In fact, I’d be wondering if I’d created multiverses with divergent timelines the minute I stepped into the past.

So kids these days have more information, yes. But the ability to process that more maturely and make better decisions, not necessarily. It’s going to take a longer time for human brains to evolve than the information revolution allows. Whether now or the 90s, teenagers are guided more by the emotional and reactive amygdala and less by the thoughtful, logical frontal cortex of adults. So in short, there’s a reason why many teens can be an angsty, thoughtless mess.

Which is not to say there isn’t a spectrum within teens (as adults). Some will be more thoughtful and generous, and others like Eun-yoo more self-absorbed and immature. But I hope the drama will allow this young girl to learn and grow. 🤞🏽

6

@indyfan

But in her case, they showed us how she was mature being a classic musician. She was pretty smart by selling stuff to get money to live in the past.

But how she thinks she can make a guy falling in love with her in hope he will think it's her mum and then make them meeting when the mum was in USA and never got back before she was an adult?

1

It's possible. You can analyze Shakespeare at school, then act like a brat at home, for example. And absolutely, her plan is poorly thought out, as an impulsive child's would be. I think of teenagers occupying that space between children and adults, and accept they can show behaviors from both worlds.

But looks like we're not going to agree on teenagers. So let's agree to disagree. Also, because this is my third attempt to post after getting a time out message. I don't think I have it in me to post a fourth time.

6

I can't reply to your posts @indyfan and @kurama, so I will reply to mine. Anyway, as they said our viewing perspectives are influenced by our environment so like you, @indyfan, i am surrounded by teenagers (and sometimes adults) who despite the information available to them still let emotions and short term objectives rule their actions so I am more familiar with that reaction. So anyway, I agree to disagree regarding teenage behaviour but for now, am giving the two travellers some slack. They are the leads after all so they must have some character growth (hopefully).

4

This drama is trying to make a contest in sob stories between the leads? Like now it's Se-kyung and I didn't think it made sense when we got the sob story of her mum.

I like this drama when it's about Cheong Ha, the scene with Eun Gyeol was great. Even if I don't like how he's tutoring his both parents, they need him in the past, in the present.... I would have prefered he was the one they helped in the past. Yi-Chan trying to communicate with her was cute too (he writes very well :p). But I don't understand how a deaf person can't think to a way to communicate with people. She was stressed by Yi-Chan's wound but showing a piece of paper with help written on would have been more efficient than gesticulating. Sometimes, they made her very strong and then completely useless... It's kinda frustrating.

I don't like the rest to be honest. I don't specially like Se-Kyung and I was completely bored during the episode 7. I don't like Seol In-ah in this role neither.

I’m glad that this week started with Eun-yoo’s POV. My main qualm last week was that I wasn’t a fan of the new character, but in retrospect I think it’s because I was naturally just echoing Eun-gyeol’s own frustrations at the newcomer throwing a spanner in the works, especially since we’d spent like 5 episodes getting to know and getting invested in Eun-gyeol so I’d begun conflating my viewing experience with his perspective after some point. This week shifting POV helped solve that issue, because it made Eun-yoo a much more understandable character, although I still think her plan is a bit (very flawed) I'll give it a pass because teenagers hahaha. And I'm glad EG finally met his mum this ep - more Cheong-ah scenes next week please!!

If she had the *perfectly* laid out plan tho she’s a messed up teen unexpectedly wrenched back to the past, I’m sure a few of us would say, uh, Unrealistic! I used to (and still do!) sometimes just take it one step at a time: figure out that first love mum never forgot. Then, somehow get him together with mum who might finally be happy even tho I may not exist.

Plus, I totally get why we would be so protective of Yi-Chan and Cheong-ha but they mean squat to this angsty teen. But that will change. Let’s wait and see. A character that grows is also meaningful. 🤞🏽

100% I realised this in hindsight too after my initial reaction passed. We all do things sometimes even knowing that it's flawed/has a high chance of falling apart etc. purely driven by sheer blind determination, so it's very human of her. Plus, given the pressure cooker environment she's been growing up in, I'd also want to sort of run amuck and just do things you know, without thinking twice about anything!

Like you said, a character who grows is meaningful, and the beauty of teenage-hood in hindsight is the journey of kids stumbling their way through trying to figure out who they are and their place in the world, all while growing and hopefully becoming good people!

I’m quite enjoying this show. There has been so much angst from the get-go (tho mostly well done) that I for one don’t mind the silly hijinks. I didn’t love Seol In-ah as the mother, but she’s grown on me as the daughter. It’s fun to see a woman play the messed-up troublemaker—but I’m sure she’ll learn and grow. The show has its heart in the right place.

Like everyone else, I’d love to see more of Cheong-ah. I shed a tear or more during her reunion with Eun-gyeol. Tho they sure laid it on thick with her suffering. Kudos to the actress for her restrained portrayal.

But I hope the show keeps braiding the light with the angst all the way thru. I’m a bit tired of the comedy>romance>angst>implosion of recent fantasy rom-coms. Twinkling Watermelon’s mix can be a bit chaotic but it’s mostly working for me.

I think I'm a little in love with this drama. This week just catapulted me fully onboard the storyline and I trust it to serve up the heart and the feels while leading to a fitting end.
Happy to see I was right about Eun Yoo being the daughter though seeing how Se Kyung turned into another version of her own mother was sad to see. Which is all the more reason I have immense love and respect for Chung ah. Despite the harsh surroundings and horrible people she was raised in, she grew to be a person full of love and joy and was able to impart the same into her own children.
The scenes between Eun Gyeol and Chung Ah were conveyed so beautifully I had to tear up. The guardedness in her eyes giving way to brittle vulnerability while his is just immensely sad to see the person who taught him best in this state. I need more of them!
Yi Chan coming to terms with Eun Gyeol no being a constant in his life was also nice to watch. And I was so glad his hearing wasnt damaged because of the incident, because what a horrible twist of fate that would be for Eun Gyeol.
And I cant wait to watch Eun Gyeol navigate the square he's wiggled himself into !
Though I get Eun Yoo's aspirations and its cute watching her work it out, I don't quite understand how her plan is going to work. Since Se Kyung is in the US and even if she finds the first love how that will end up changing Se Kyung's future. But she's an angsty don't-think-feel 18 year old so I guess its more make up as you go vibes.

I didn't like episode 7 as much because it was lacking sign language, Yi Chan & Eun Gyeol, and the 21st century timeline. I had also thought they made Se Kyung unlikable by basically turning her into her mother (oh how people end up turning into their parents) Reading the recap almost makes feel for her because giving up what she (seemingly) loved (supposedly) turned her into this person. I also don't buy Yi Chan as her 1st love because one of the descriptions was "he was cold" and Yi Chan hasn't been cold to her even once. He hasn't been cold to anyone. Not sure he has a cold, indifferent bone in his body.

I also didn't like Eun Yoo throwing away her phone. Even if she was ignoring her dad, that was stupid.

3 things tickled me in epidode 8. 1: Eun Gyeol & Eun Yoo calling each other Ahjumma & Ahjeoshi. That made me laugh out loud. The meta fact of these 20 something year old actors playing 18 and then calling each other by that tickled me. Then character wise, it's funny that from both of their perspective, the other would be older but in actuality they're both 21st century 18 year olds. I wonder if they are going to realize that or divulge that at any point. Like will one of thing accidentally refer to a future thing in the other's presence? Will the Viva La Vida guy play a part? 2: The wanted/missing band t shirts. I laughed out loud when I saw it haha. And even though they grumbled and complained, they still wore them which brings me to 3: The fact that Yi Chan once again did a public declaration and when it ended with an ultimatum, the band started playing. The disconnect between what's being said and the happy go lucky music playing tickled me.

Poor Chung Ah. I know people like and want redemption arcs but I just want Chung Ah to separate from those people again and never look back. What type of ass backwards logic is "no one needs to know my child is disabled and I don't them to so I'm gonna ban the use of sign language at home and enroll her in a normal school where its evident that she can't hear or speak and additionally has to deal with bullying and harassment?" Why not just get her a private turor or send her away along with her mother? (But I know the show needs to happen).

Sidenote: if Eun Gyeol is able to do anything to change his mom's family for the future, I would want him to find Chung Ah's mom but does Chung Ah even know her name?

When the father was dismissing the importance of sign language and how it would allow her to communicate and connect with the world, I was truly like "what the ****?" cause this is basic stuff. Who WOULDN'T want to be able to communicate?! Even animals communicate. The chairman was beyond ignorant and clearly doesn't give a damn about his daughter which does make it confusing that he went along with Eun Gyeol teaching her. And we continue with the barely makes sense (to me) logic of "it's a secret that only the 3 of us will know" followed by him...

...teaching and signing in school in front of others while evil stepsister tells people that he's living with them and Chung Ah's school helper.

Even though alot of things didn't make sense to me, I really liked when Eun Gyeol and Chung Ah met and how he was so protective of her and communucated with her. I am so glad our characters actually know each other now and are interacting.

It is funny how Eun Gyeol ended up having to tutor both of his parents haha.

Also the "clear sound/pure sound" thing felt relevant since it made Eun Gyeol cry but I don't remember if it had been mentioned before. Does anyone else know about that?

Eun Gyeol's budding attraction is interesting because of the timey wimey mechanics of him knowing her older. Can't really justify Eun Yoo's attraction to him but I do enjoy their bickering and how they're basically foils to each other.

I think the dad had said he had fallen in love with the mom after hearing her voice - the voice that comes through the pretty way she signed. I'm not familiar with signing, but each signer has their own voice in the way they gesture. And I think EG cried because he finally heard his mom's voice.

A reference list of Eungyeol's talents:

Guitar prodigy
Maths whizz (includes uni level assignments)
Sign language
Taekwondo - remember how he used to spar with his brother? (Wait he has a brother? thankfully we got a reminder in this week's flashback)
Fashion Design - this one's new (he was also meant to do some modelling, maybe next time?)
*feel free to add to the list as his hidden talents continue to emerge

Now before I label him as a tropey kdrama geeeenius, the writer did subvert some things in his intelligence which make him more relatable, like:

Calling his teenage parents omma and appa...and then not understanding why they (or in Chungha's case, her house's bodyguards) don't respond well to that
Acting and talking in a way that makes it looks like he has a massive crush on Yichan (this one's not really a complaint)
Falling for an ahjumma (can't blame him since we all know how much kdrama geniuses need love)
Oh yeah that one time when he got cough medicine for someone who was smoking
(I guess that guy watches the Worst of Evil).

When it comes to his parents, he goes looney instantly. There's no boundary he won't cross. Eg; when he confronts Chung-ah's stepmom and stepsister, you can see his rage boiling up. I loved how his attitude was like,"WTF you just said!?" He was using formal speech but it did not feel like that at all. The way he was throwing his words was so satisfying. It felt fresh. This show is (in my opinion) a happier version of My Perfect Stranger, and I like it for the same reasons I liked that show. There, the time machine was put in place to solve serial killings, but the other main point was to have the FL understand her parents and the ML understand why his Mom left. But I like this show much better, not just because it removes the serial killing, but also because it involves 2 young adult protagonists who can't see things from their Dad or Mom's perspective (Although Eun-yoo's plight is a lot more serious than Eun-gyeol's disagreement with his Dad over touring with the band.).

The other thing I really like is that (at least initially) their goals were in conflict--with one anxious to promote what actually happened in the past and the other making ill-conceived efforts to stop it.
That's why I always liked the character of Eun-yoo, and still do, and I liked what I assume will be the hate to love relationship that they are developing. I hope Eun-yoo doesn't really give up the cello, and they go to each other's concerts at the end. I am happy that Eun-gyeol gave up his berating of Eun-yoo to stay away, and at the end finally decided on the "strategy" to say he liked Eun-yoo (which is of course not really a "strategy" at all, but an actual attraction that he's been denying.)

I'm with those whose favorite couple is Yi-chan and Chung-ah--they are both really appealing and belong together. I think it interesting that Yi-chan being beat up gave us a forshadowing of his hearing loss--maybe that will prove to be the key incident, although it didn't originally result in any deafness.
One scene I found funny, although it certainly wasn't that way for Eun-gyeol, was the dream where he went back, heard New Jeans Ditto to indicate it was 2023, found everything the same, except with Se-Kyeung is Mom. His horrified reaction was perfect.

Finally, as far as Se-kyeung, I think we probably won't see her again until the end, and her future will improve only in that her daughter AND Eun-gyeol will sympathize with her and support her, so that she can escape her wallowing in the past.

but how emotionally abusive and toxic Sekyoung was to her daughter... does she deserve to be supported? I want a kdrama where kids cut off their toxic relatives at least once.

Of course, her husband was able to play the "good Dad" while he was (likely) having an affair, and then he left her. I have a feeling we'll see a different angle on the Mom's behavior by the end.

Why do you say he cheated or had an affair? Was that said and I just forgot?

@britney Oh no, you didn't miss anything. I was just speculating, as I always do, based on the fact that he was a flirt prior to being married (that angel line that his daughter witnessed was a groaner) and the fact that the wife was driven to drinking, suggesting the marriage was unhappy.
As I said, whether I'm right or not, I believe we'll see more details revealed!

Eun-gyeol is trying to fast-track his dad and mom's relationship. In the actual timeline, his dad has to go deaf first (due to a horrible accident) and then meet his mom at a sign language class. He wants to prevent the accident that took away his dad's hearing, but if he does that, his parents won't meet and he won't be born.

So like Eun-yu, he's trying to erase something undesirable from the past. But he also wants to continue existing too.

Eun-gyeol's "strategy" is good.

Also, I'm totally on board your prediction for Se-kyeung's future. Move on Ahjumma! Go live your life.

At some point I was like, oh cool, time for another tragic backstory. And I love that they just straight up confirmed our theories so casually at the start of ep. 7 with Sekyoung’s daughter reveal.

We love our intergenerational trauma. So basically Sekyoung treated her daughter exactly how her mom treated her… but perhaps worse, because her daughter was contemplating suicide??
Honestly, I would feel more bad for Sekyoung’s daughter if I didn’t find her so insufferable in her first few appearances and selfish on some level. like yeah, I do feel for her, Sekyoung is toxic beyond words. regardless, mental health issues is not an excuse to play with other people’s feelings or, um, wipe Eungyeol out of existence.

I dislike Chung-ah’s tsundere tendencies but they’re very understandable. But gosh, 🥺 Yichan and Chung-ah are so cute. It’s so wholesome how he makes her… happy? At peace? Plus, she’s such a love-struck dork gosh. HE CALLED ME BY MY NAME 🎶🎶🎶🎶 and all that.

I did like how Eun-gyu set up a board with photos and shit like she's a detective in a crime drama while trying to figure out her mom’s first love… meanwhile, Eun-gyeol had to go the ER T-T
Also, gotta admit, Eun-gyu’s snark and banter is genuinely endearing at times.

Damn did Eun-gyu straight up fall for Eungyeol… Bro got immaculate rizz frfr. But in all seriousness, I was kinda surprised that she likes him now? I hope they develop this further, bc it feels so half baked rn… I don't really feel the chemistry between Eungyeol & Sekyoung's daughter but I like their bickering ig

I love how Eun-gyeol just never manages to beat the gay allegations. tbh, we need to get his and Yichan’s actors in a BL. They got so much chemistry. Like, even at the end of ep. 8, Yichan’s speech just sounded like a love confession

I was so confused whether Eun-gyeol returned to his present or whether it was all a dream. I went from, “ayyo who is this woman…. Is this Sekyoung??” to “How do the brothers look the same even with diff moms?”
Whether it was a dream or not, it’s funny that maybe Sekyoung’s daughter is right… Sekyoung seemed happier and more loving with an alternate family & husband?

As to Chung-ah’s “family”…. Oh god. It's another makjang style inheritance plot. Yay I love those 🙄 and how did that ajumma go from live in tutor to his wife... You know what, idc. But hey, it's the Squid Game lady!
… and the corrupt guy from Bad Prosecutor. How is he a prick even in this? T-T Same with that poor lady, she was also a lil psycho in Revenge of Others…. Do you think she's tired of playing a bully AGAIN

I hope they don’t even try to redeem Chung-ah’s dad. Does this guy even love his daughter? But I'm sure we'll learn later he was doing all this to help her or some BS like that. It was so based of Eungyeol to straight up call his grandpa a colonizer

I was like initially like, do we need to see Yichan’s dramatic retelling of the ‘fight’ in full, can we just get back to the...

...but then I realized… I want that long coat… and, yeah, ok, we need Choi Hyunwook in an action drama now

Wait, was it the evil stepmom who turned Yichan away?? Or was Chung-ah being tsundere again 😭

Imagine how Chung-ah feels seeing this random dude break down in front of her…And Eungeyol straight up lives at Pyscho House?? Dinners or running into the residents in hallways must be so awkward.

You gotta hand it to depictions of classism in kdrama. Pyscho girl's friends are just as bad as her, the way they were talking about mistresses falling for their servants felt so gross…

You know what, I'm back to enjoying this. Sekyoung’s daughter (I refuse to remember her name) kinda turned me off from this drama at first but we back, baby. the weird upcoming love square seems weird, but maybe it’ll be fun, at least based on the previews.

P.S. They really went with the "scary black men try to molest innocent girl in an alley” trope in that NYC scene huh? Yikes.

Re: Your P.S -- When I saw that scene, I thought--"is she walking in the Asian neighborhood of New York? Because those thugs look awfully Korean to me." But after you noted it, I went back to replay that scene, and I did see that one of the guys had dreadlocks, so not so good.

But, while I abhor the racism often visible in kdramas, I also saw in the rewatch that one of the guys who accosted her said "Yo, Ma" a reference to Yo-Yo Ma, since she was carrying a cello. So regardless of their race, they were pretty musically literate thugs!

You know how they say - "That went dark fast".

From calling out racism to calling out their lack of musical knowledge!! What is this.

I didn't know I needed these four leads in a drama together until they showed up right in front of me. I think it's just crazy that despite not having any single spoken dialogue (except the narration) Shin Eunsoo manages to shine as much as the others and if that doesn't show how amazing she is in this one idk what will. I think I've watched her a lot, and in that one drama with Jang Hyuk I just thought she's gonna be that one young actress who is.. you know maybe fun to watch, but after Summer Strike she completely changed that view for me and she kept breaking my heart with these roles....

Love this so much. I started just a few days ago and caught up the the latest episodes. I love everything about the story line of the father/mother/son. I liked the introduction of the new time traveler Eun-gyu, but when they dived in on their backstory I was looking at the run time, because I wanted them to return the Eun Gyeol and his family.

Welcome to the party.
Mother Bean @Reply1988 has already declared this as drama of the year so good you got on the bandwagon.

Not just you ALL of us want Eun-gyeol and his family ... guess Eun-yoo will also be (future) family, so there's that. 😀

I love this drama so much, and I love everyone in their roles and in their interactions with each other.

Chung-ha and Yi-chan bring on the the longing that hurts and feels so good at the same time. They take my breath away - individually and together.

Eun-yoo and Eun-gyeol - Hilarious! Love seeing them fight. It's good old-fashioned kdrama bickering and them getting under each other's skin and resisting their attraction to each other.

Eun-yoo and Yi-chan - Also hilarious because they are both self-absorbed and impulsive. They are the class clowns.

Chung-ha and Eun-gyeol - I love how EG protected his mom and is opening up her world. Just a heartwarming duo.

Eun-gyeol and Yi-chan - Another heartwarming duo. Yi-chan making all those efforts to find the missing Eun-gyeol and putting on a mini-concert for EG was adorable.

Part of me still suspects that Se-kyung was in love with Chung-ha. Once Eun-yoo gets close with Chung-ha (which I'm sure she'll attempt to do so that she can find out who the first love is), she'll pick up the clues.

I think it is hilarious that Eun-gyeol has sort of usurped Se-kyung's spot as school belle in episode 8. He's getting the serenade and pseudo-public-confession. And Eun-yoo, without the school uniform, played Yi-chan's role as the unwelcomed campus trespasser.

Part of me still suspects that Se-kyung was in love with Chung-ha. Ooh. I almost forgot about that theory. I'd love it. But didn't adult Se-kyung say her first love was in band? I might remember incorrectly.

I like how you've listed all the pairings. My favorite is Eun-gyeol with his parents. Then, Chung-ha and Yi-chan have my heart. Finally, Eun-yoo and Eun-gyeol, who have my belly. Cos I need to hold it when they make me laugh.

I love your entire comment and agree with everything you said. You have expressed everything so beautifully.

Eun-gyeol as school belle - how awesome is that.

Gu Jun-pyo and F4 and A3 in Extraordinary You also received their fair amount of attention but this wooing of Eun-gyeol was really something special.

"Part of me still suspects that Se-kyung was in love with Chung-ha"

That definitely crossed my mind too. Though I don't know her "fist love was in a band" fit in.

@Dramaddictally

Thank you for your very engaging weecaps.

I really appreciate your discretion as a writer. Your writing was strictly restricted to what the drama was showing (or intended to show) us and did not let even a wiff of the background murmuring (in the second week itself) of Se-kyung's daughter who was her doppelganger being a second time traveller, permeate your writing. Well done. 👏

Although there is no way you were unaware of this, but I liked the way you played along with the drama and let its reveal "surprise" you. Very impressive indeed and a clever piece of writing by not letting on more than what the drama was telling you at that moment or speculating beyond the story in the drama at that point.

In this day and age of abounding spoilers this is a very respectful approach for covering a drama. The fact that you did not succumb to temptation to reveal more is very commendable. Thank you. This is indeed the best (and old-school) way to enjoy dramas.

Respect!

I forgot to mention this and I don't think anyone has but Yi Chan's ears ringing. At first I thought this was the beginning of his hearing loss and he would associate that with Eun Gyeol which would lead to resentment. I thought maybe Eun Gyeol altered the time line of events leading to Yi Chan lossing his hearing earlier.

I'm still wondering if this is the start of the hearing loss but I'm also wondering if the accident Dad mentioned was just the final straw that led to the hearing loss. Maybe it was a gradual loss.

Also in addition to losing his hearing, in the current timeline, he lost his friend and that is sad to think about since they're so close in the past. There is a surprising amount of loneliness throughout this story when you think about it.

Hmmm, I don't know what to think about what might happen with the story. It's possible that Eun Gyeol prevents the accident that supposedly caused Dad's hearing loss but since he ended up with Cheong Ah, he still became fluent in signing.

I don't want that though haha. Even though the majority of the family was deaf, they were still happy and functioning (even though they definitely experience hardships to put it mildly). To change things to make things "neater" or more "normal" feels kinda weird to me. I just want Eun Gyeol to back to his regular family but I'm like 76% sure that the future will be altered somehow.

rewatching these episodes and the previous ones, and i just realized another hint eunyoo is not sekyoung is because sekyoung is very clearly seen leaving lord from gimpo airport, but eunyoo’s suitcase bears the luggage tag for ICN (incheon airport). but the incheon airport only opened for business in 2001

I started looking for spoilers but I can't wrap my head around the fact that the Master asked Eun Yu "you sure he is the one?" referring to Yi Chan, the question makes no sense, it has to be him, because Se Kyeong did marry her first boyfriend, the one Yi Chan and Ma Joo saw at the party, the boy who was in a band and studying medicine and ended up becoming Dr. On Ji Hwan?? That's Eun Yu's father, so when Se Kyeong says "if only I had married my first love instead of your father (instead of Dr. On Ji Hwan)... ", she has to be thinking about Yi Chan, right??
