My Dearest: Episodes 15-16
by alathe
Our hero lies wounded, with our heroine waiting ceaselessly by his side. She’s got a whole lot of medicine bowls and damp towels in her future. Still, perhaps when he gains consciousness, they’ll finally have the chance for an honest conversation. That said, they’re living on borrowed time — yet another political crisis looms large on the horizon…
EPISODES 15-16
Jang-hyun sleeps the sleep of the recently impaled, while Gil-chae keeps vigil, hoping for signs of life. She can’t quite resist doing something she’s wanted to do for literal years: reaching out and clasping his hand. As she drifts off, Jang-hyun stirs. He hides a small smile. Then, with Gil-chae resting by his bedside, he closes his eyes once more.
Meanwhile, Goo Jam has been every bit as relentless in pursuit of the woman he loves. He finds Jong Jong in a dire situation, fending off her new captor’s attempts at assault. Luckily, our hero brought a large bludgeoning weapon. One solid thunk later, he and Jong Jong make their escape as if in a dream, laughing all the while. But as the adrenaline fades, things get awkward. It’s not Jong Jong’s fault that she studied at the Gil-chae school of courtship. When Goo Jam goes in for a kiss, she panics, gets indignant, and bops him half-heartedly on the cheek. After that, it’s kind of hard to recover the mood.
Later, Gil-chae and Jong Jong fall into each other’s arms, tears flowing freely. Gil-chae is awash with guilt at the thought that she’d failed to protect her. Still, she’s adamant they can’t make their way back home yet — not with Jang-hyun still mortally wounded. But Goo Jam smells a rat. It takes one snarky comment from him before poor, mortally wounded Jang-hyun sits bolt upright in bed, back from the brink of death. Yup: turns out an arrow to the back is no match for a man in love. Jang-hyun is committed. He knows when he wakes, Gil-chae has no excuse to remain… consequently, if he must forgo speech, baths, and the ability to scratch his nose for months at a time, then so be it!
Tensions arise. Yang-chun is pretty miffed by Jang-hyun’s long-term holiday from speaking, walking, or scheming — primarily because it puts him in charge of the rescued Joseon captives. Still, you can’t fault his loyalty: when Gil-chae walks in, he puts on an Oscar-worthy display of bedside weeping. Meanwhile, Gil-chae and Ryang-eum learn that hell is other people… more specifically, each other. There’s only so many times one person can mop their beloved’s clammy brow, let alone two, and the household is running low on towels. It’s not their finest moment when they find themselves in a tug-of-war match over a medicine bowl — or when its contents is thrown on Jang-hyun’s unsuspecting face. Arguably, he had that one coming.
Meanwhile, in Jang-hyun’s absence, a simple question from the captives sends Yang-chun spinning into a moral quagmire: when can we go home? It’s a raw deal; even in Joseon they’re considered property, requiring an owner to ransom them back. Some of them don’t have that. Eventually, Yang-chun — ignoring Goo Jam’s obligatory grumbling — agrees to lend everyone the money required. Still, with the journey back to Joseon so fraught, he warns that it’s safer to farm for the crown prince.
On that front, Gil-chae is determined to pull her weight. You don’t claw your way to the top of the mini-dagger business without learning a thing or two about blacksmithing! She teaches the farmers how to repair their machines, whilst regaling the “unconscious” Jang-hyun with stories of her day. One time, he sneaks out of bed to watch her work. To his absolute delight, she remains as abrasive as ever. But she also abandons all thoughts of rank to laugh and rake soil with the rest of them. Meanwhile, the displaced Joseon court watch from afar, listening to the farmers sing and thinking of their homeland.
Jang-hyun’s game of pretend lasts longer than I’d be able to tolerate not washing my own hair without breaking — but it reaches a conclusion nonetheless. Namely, the point at which it breaks Gil-chae. Weeping, she announces that she’d give up her life if it meant he’d get better. At this, Jang-hyun, still awkwardly recumbent, stages a miraculous recovery. Crucially, this does not prevent him from milking his injury for all it’s worth. Over the next few days, he develops a pronounced, medically improbable limp, because, well, shoulder wounds work in mysterious ways, don’t you know? Science says so!
Growing web of lies notwithstanding, our leads do finally get the chance to sit and talk. Jang-hyun confesses that the rumors are true: he was born a government slave. For a moment, Gil-chae’s snobbery silently wars with her better instincts — but in the end, all she says is it would have been nicer if he hadn’t purchased a title. He could have been her servant! There’s still time to forsake my rank, smirks Jang-hyun. Then, growing serious, he asks the million-dollar question: why did Gil-chae abandon him that day? There’s a long, weighted pause. I couldn’t bring myself to have you, admits Gil-chae. I knew you could go on without me. Jang-hyun meets her gaze, deliberately. What, he asks, makes you think that?
Alas, this is when our tête-à-tête grows a few too many heads. Lurking near a tree is Gak-hwa — and she’s none too pleased. But behind her stands Ryang-eum… with an arrow aimed at her back. For a moment, he truly does consider firing. But he backs down. Seconds later, he finds himself at the mercy of Gak-hwa’s guards, with a warning for Jang-hyun: she will summon him soon. When she does, it’s to deliver a seriously spiky ultimatum. If Gil-chae doesn’t go back to Joseon… well, she of course wouldn’t harm her. But all kinds of things can happen to a captive, quite by chance. In an instant, Jang-hyun seizes her by the throat. Gak-hwa remains impassive. I understand your fears, she says. It’s exactly how I felt when you were in danger.
Meanwhile, Ryang-eum, still reeling, goes in search of Gil-chae. There’s only one way he can convince her to leave. Handing her the dagger she lost at Ganghwa-do, he confirms that Jang-hyun was her savior that day. Injury, illness, death — there’s no end to what he’s risked for her. At this point, it is certain to me, concludes Ryang-eum. You are a curse to Jang-hyun. Gil-chae retreats to her room, torturing herself with a thousand recollections. All her scornful words. All the times she’d rejected him. Hiding her head, she abandons her pride and weeps.
When morning comes, she’s made up her mind. She won’t be leaving. If she’s a curse to Jang-hyun, then she’s also the only cure. And so, their walks in the Woods of (Comparative) Emotional Honesty continue. With a pang, Gil-chae remembers how arrogant she once was, and Jang-hyun laughs. You don’t even stutter in my presence, he deadpans. The rumors must be true: you’re the ninety-nine-tailed fox. Now that’s a comeback he must have been waiting years to deliver. Her laughter dies as he catches her by the wrist, pulling her into a hug. Stay with me, he says. You needn’t be faithful to a husband who left you.
Gil-chae freezes at the mention of Won-moo. And yet, she says, later that evening, whilst it’s true I had a husband — and a father, and a younger sister — I also have a man who saved my life. I’d die for you. However, she begins — and then stops. Jang-hyun moves closer. However, he asks, you can’t love me? I never wanted you to die for me. Gil-chae lets him lean towards her, a breath away from a kiss. And he does kiss her — on the cheek. He lets the moment stretch, willing her to close the distance. But soon, a call comes from outside. There’s urgent news from the palace.
The Khan is dead. Succeeding him is his six-year-old son — and PRINCE DORGON (Sohn Tae-yang) as his regent. Regime change is terrible news for Joseon: plenty of Qing higher-ups support its dissolution as a nation. Jang-hyun’s best hope lies in buttering up General Yong with promises of the crown prince’s favor. Hopefully, the prospect of juicy trade deals can lure him into a pro-Joseon stance. Unfortunately, General Yong is the bearer of worse news: Dorgon has granted Gak-hwa authority over the Joseon captives. Suddenly, her threats look a lot more plausible. Soon, she delivers the worst ultimatum yet: if Jang-hyun doesn’t send Gil-chae back, she’ll make life misery for those he saved.
Jang-hyun looks over the promissory notes made by the grateful captives — the ones Yang-chun collected — and clenches his fists. There’s no evading this. It’s the one thing he won’t sacrifice. With Qing victory over the Ming looming closer by the day, the captives are as good as forgotten. Gak-hwa can do what she likes.
Perhaps he’s gotten a little too used to lying to Gil-chae. Either way, he chooses the most painful solution possible. The crown prince, he tells her, has been given permission to visit Joseon. I want you to return with them. When she protests, he interrupts. I clung to you, he says, almost to the brink of death. For that, I have no regrets — but now, nothing remains in my heart. Plus, he adds, going for broke, I’m tired of you pushing me away. Gil-chae’s expression turns mutinous. What, she asks, if I said no? But Jang-hyun knows her — knows her weak spots — and his reply is coldly calculated. Has Gil-chae no shame? She’s married. It’s enough: Gil-chae is left blinking back tears of shock.
When the time comes for Gil-chae to leave, Jang-hyun doesn’t trust himself to see her. Instead, as is becoming their habit, they say their goodbyes through the door. I feel pathetic admits Gil-chae, ruefully, but Jang-hyun stops her. I never once thought of you that way, he says. When you go home, I want you to live with all the fanfare and extravagance expected of Gil-chae. Yes, she agrees. I’ll be brave. I’ll live a good life. But when the Joseon delegation leaves, she can’t help but look for Jang-hyun — to no avail. He’s there, of course. But he arrived just late enough to miss her gaze.
Now, Jang-hyun is left facing Gak-hwa. She doesn’t flinch or hesitate — just coolly meets his eyes. You must want to kill me, she says. Yes, he agrees, shortly. If only you would allow me. Gak-hwa doesn’t seem surprised. She only replies that it’s curious — Jang-hyun cared about those captives when the entire nation of Joseon forgot about them. He just can’t seem to resist lowly and pathetic things. Jang-hyun’s reply is hollow: I don’t care about other people’s business.
Gak-hwa offers this a silent refutation. She backs away until she is leaning against the railing, a large drop below her. Then, she lets her weight shift. Jang-hyun seizes her arm before either have time to think, hauling her back. The two stare at one another, breathless — Gak-hwa, disbelieving; Jang-hyun, realizing just how serious she’d been. I’m scared, she finally confesses. I’ve never lived in a world without my father. I know you despise me, but I’m begging you — let me be by your side.
Across the border, Gil-chae reunites with her family in a flurry of hugs and tears. If there’s one consolation to all the heartbreak, it’s this. However, outside, she is met with a wall of hostility. She can hardly cross the street without hearing loud speculation about whether or not she was raped. When one man is foolish enough to insult Jong Jong, she slaps him square in the face. But there are worse humiliations, ones she can’t face head-on. Her loved ones insist she’s too strong to have been assaulted; Gil-chae squirms, unable to tell them that wasn’t the point at all. Meanwhile, Won-moo is living with another woman — and that woman is pregnant.
The nightmare reaches its peak when Gil-chae’s father, still only semi-lucid, visits her while she’s sleeping. He too has heard the rumors. What can I do, he says, now that your life has become this hell? With sick inevitability, answer occurs. Slowly, he wraps his hands around her throat. It is only when Gil-chae wakes in terror, managing to croak out his name, that he releases her in horror.
The next day, Gil-chae meets with Won-moo. First, she asks if she can have some of the daggers their company crafted. She needs them for self-defense. Next, she has something to say. Yes, she was sold. She endured great abuse at the slave market. That was not her fault, and isn’t a good reason for divorce. No — there’s only one thing she’ll apologize for. She met Jang-hyun again… and she gave him her heart. That, she says, is why I am divorcing you.
Now there’s the Gil-chae defiance I know and love! I live for those moments where she squares her jaw and decides she simply won’t stand for this. I also liked seeing Gil-chae and Jang-hyun’s tentative attempts at honesty — especially Gil-chae taking two steps forward, one step back: dropping the conversation when it gets hard, only to pick it up again, and again. Meanwhile, that last scene with Gak-hwa was a hit for me. Sure, she’s your hackneyed jealous second lead, but I’m fascinated by her sharp edges. When they make it less about Jang-hyun, and more about how awful yet fascinating she is, I’m on board.
Another moment that struck me was that scene with the farmers singing. It’s a symbol of solidarity for the workers, and of homesickness for the court — but of course, the nobles observing them and waxing nostalgic don’t actually lift a finger to help. The Joseon they long for is a society with its own hierarchy and exploitation. Gil-chae, of course, does help. Still, she too has her thoughtless moments; Jong Jong is at the mercy of her commands. They’re staying? Jong Jong can live with that! They’re leaving? Of course Jong Jong will come! Their relationship has its own sharp edges — and it was fascinating to see Jong Jong choose Gil-chae over Goo Jam. This show has me invested in so many relationships, all of them layered.
As for our romance… to be honest, I wish we had fewer external obstacles (e.g. all the forced separation), and more of a focus on the internal ones — the ones that come from Gil-chae and Jang-hyun as people. Nonetheless, I’m still hopelessly rooting for them. Maybe next week, they’ll finally fight for one another!

Things I liked in this episode:
* All the historical tidbits regarding the political fallout of the death of the Khan
* Jong Jong is back and saved by her beloved GuJam.
* I liked the emotional scenes - Jong Jong and Gil Chae's reunion, farmers singing, Gil Chae and Jong Jong's reunion with their family and friends back in Hanyang.
* Gil Chae divorcing Won Moo
* Gak Hwas showing her vulnerability
Did not like;
At first I found Jang Hyun's deception amusing but got annoyed with him eventually. It didnt sit well with me when he continued to deceive Gil Chae for so long. Even if it was to prevent her from returning to Joseon and keep her by his side.
* Won Moo shacking up and impregnating his concubine
* verbal abuse GC and JJ has to endure from other people

Period wise - they now promptly place this in 1643? So from 1636 to 1643 - seven years, and these two are still going around in circles (eyeroll....)

@Minnie,
I'm a bit confused because the Crown Princess said that they did not allow her to go to Joseon when her father passed away. (July 1643). Maybe the reason for this trip home is unrelated to the history. She is going to see her mother instead.
July 28, 1643: Crown Princess's father passed away.
September 21, 1643: Hong Taiji passed away.
1. His health deteriorated after the death of his beloved concubine, Chen. (EPS 14)
2. He suffers from nasal congestion and is often dizzy. (EPS 14, we see his servants rush to cover his nose while he was discussing the war provisions with Inggūldai).
October 8, 1643: The 6-year-old Fulin (Hong Taiji's 9th son), aka the Shunzhi Emperor, ascended the throne as the 2nd emperor of Qing. Dorgon (Hong Taiji's younger brother) and his cousin Jirgalang (not mentioned in the drama) became Prince regents, but Dorgon held the most power.
Dorgon permitted the Crown Prince and Princess to visit Joseon.
There are 4 episodes left, and I'm not sure how they will fit in Beijing and Johann Adam Schall von Bell.
Another thing. These Sarim scholars are not giving me any good vibes. They have the power to command the militia, which I believe was the army at the beach against Jang Hyun. (EPS 1)

Yeah, I was hoping to see that aspect of the Crown Prince's story, but I don't think the show will go that route with four episodes remaining.

The 2 writers I'd trust with a sageuk based on Crown Prince Sohyeon would be the writer of NOKDU FLOWER, Jeong Hyun-min or Lee Jung-woo (KING OF TEARS). No bullshit, no fan service, just straight to the point.

In this drama, Crown Prince Sohyeon has been downgraded so that Jang Hyun can be the focus as the main character. Maybe it's not a bad idea to skip it.

Gil-chae deciding to divorce Won-mo was the best thing to happen this week.
Won-mo did her dirty, something I can't forgive. The only reason why I can still stand him on my screen is cause o r of my personal biases is playing his character. Had it been an actor I don't have as a favorite... there's no need to complete the sentence.
Won-mo messed up. Big time. And it was the best decision for Gil-chae not to tell him what happened in Qing. He doesn't deserve it at all.
That slap she gave that commoner...perfect.
Does it seem that her father is equally ashamed of her or was it that he wanted to spare her the humiliation? I know that was a natural occurrence. There's a huge likelihood that returnees faced that fate from the hands of their family members. And, My Dearest is deciding to tell some part of that story through Gil-chae.
I can't wait for her to leave for Qing.

Thank fucking god we’ll finally be rid of the unnecessary husband subplot, but unfortunately it seems that the princess is here to stay. The inclusion of Gak-hwa’s character and her personality is honestly still baffling to me. It comes off as so… juvenile in a drama that’s otherwise starkly realistic - sometimes even to its own detriment. I just want to see Jang-hyun and Gil-chae together already. It’s been sixteen fucking episodes, give me a break already.

I believe you're right, @kiara. As you say somewhere here, she is called Gak Hwa in this drama, because it is a fictionalised version with this love interest in a Joseon interpreter... and the rejection of another Mongol husband ...
angelshadows50
October 30, 2023 at 12:26 PM
But the real life Makata WAS Hong Taji favourite daughter, was extremely powerful and probably equally beautiful as ruthless. In this drama she is given also the voice of a woman who was also at the mercy of men, even her.
ladynightshade wants her own ryu sunjae
October 30, 2023 at 7:07 PM
@angelshadows50: Now THAT sounds infinitely more compelling than whatever we got in the show. She’s still powerful here obviously, but why make her entire purpose in the plot revolve around a man? A fictional, foreign (to her as a colonizing force, her people clearly don’t see Koreans as equal humans) man at that. They easily could’ve demonstrated her ruthlessness and political machinations within the Qing empirical system without forcing an unwanted love triangle. They had a great way to showcase the real power princesses and other royal women held behind the scenes, and even openly, in otherwise incredibly patriarchal monarchies. But they chose the boring way out. I’m disappointed.

October 30, 2023 at 11:36 PM
I get what you are saying, @ladynightshade. I myself wouldn't say disappointed because I liked the subtle interactions between Jang Hyeon and Gal Haw as well. Portraying her differently would have opened up yet another storyline which required to be fulfilled, I suppose.

I'm disappointed that Eun-ae, the 2nd FL from the first half has been basically relegated to the sidelines now. Her character, to me, is far more interesting than some sadistic princess ( the show is overrun with sadistic characters whether they are from Joseon or the Qing) weirdly hung up on JH.
Her storyline, as you mention, comes across as juvienille and out of place compared to the rest of the show.

"juvenile in a drama that’s otherwise starkly realistic"
That is it, isn't it? It's very jarring. It's like I'm minding my business watching My Dearest, forgetting that she's even a part of it, and then she reappears with all the subtlety of a boomerang flying into the scene.
No disrespect to Lee Chung Ah, but what happened to her part being a cameo? She has more screentime than some of our mains!

I thought she was gonna be a one-and-done appearance! Like an homage to her continuing collabs with Namgoong Min (which hopefully will lead to them starring in a WELL-WRITTEN romcom one day, drama gods willing). But nooooo, they just had to make her character awfully written and make her overstay her welcome in an already sprawling ensemble. Literally every other figure in the Qing court is leagues more interesting than her. It’s such a shame.

Thanks for the fabulous recap alathe, some much needed lightness and humour after all the show is putting us through.
As I posted on Sicarius comment - I too am feeling very, very fatigued of being “dragged” through the “angst, misery, pain p–n” and “continued repetition loop- with no pay off” whatsoever.
We have watched over 16 hours without one honest conversation or any straightforward communication between our leads.
I’m resigned to the fact that this is not first and foremost a romance. I only wish it had been clearer from the start then my expectations would not have been so high.
As much as I love watching both lead actors, maybe this would have been better as 16 episodes to get rid of a lot of frustrating crap that has deviated from the tighter first half of the show.
I am also tired of being manipulated and the preview for the next episode fills me with dread instead of any heart fluttering squees- seeing the leads possibly have a few happy moments together when I know it's only episode 17 and as per kdrama lore they are again, again going to be ripped apart.
Hwaiting to the finish, only for Namkoong Min and Ahn Eun-Jin.

@alathe, thanks for the recap !
That pesky princess, a royal pain . The fake comatose gag was a bit too gimmicky .
Princess shot Jang -Hyun! She would have poked her head in to see how he was doing, especially if it went on for weeks.
Granted, her dad was dying. So there is that.

The lighter moments were rare and pleasant. It didn't feel too fluffy.
The timing still wasn't right for Gil Chae and Jang Hyun. I knew it yet I still wanted to savor their alone time. Their secret hand holding and the peck on the cheek was just enough. I'm glad they had some time to talk even though they didn't clear up all their issues. She knows he was the one who saved her on that island now. She's trusting him again and their connection. He's quick to move forward, but she's not ready.
Did he have to be so cold when he pushed her away though? Ugh. He's also quick to turn cold and put up a front. Hoping Gil Chae knew this and knew she had other priorities before their relationship can truly begin. She couldn't have stayed in Shenyang forever.
Less interfering from outside people is needed. Gil Chae finally confronted Ryang Eum and knows his deceptive ways so she should be wiser and cautious of their future encounters.
Some lines and parts were off like Jong Jong coming back with no lingering side effects. Was she not abused by her Qing owner? Or had he been after a different servant before his attempt on her? Goo Jam being there for her is great, but the kiss was awkward and felt too soon after her escape. It's a relief that he cares about her unlike other Joseon men who disparage the women who came back to Joseon.
Thank you for the recap alathe!

I've been struggling to try and write something that both expresses how I feel but also doesn't go too hard in bringing the mood down for people who are enjoying the show so here goes:
I honestly really liked ep 15, because they finally talked and it looked like idk there was hope and a reprieve from the angst (who was I kidding lol), but then ep 16 happened and it felt like I was back in the hamster wheel, but god I'm just so tired honestly. The only good thing is that the husband problem is no longer a problem, but it just feels like we took ages to get here and I honestly wish that this problem hadn't been written into the plot in the first place. Looking at how many episodes we have left and where ep 16. left off, I'm a little sad that we likely won't get too much happiness or fluff in the last two weeks, but I guess this show never was about that in the first place so once again, just my misplaced expectations perhaps (as well as just overall angst fatigue preventing me from enjoying any crumbs of OTP fluff because who knows what plot sledgehammer I'll be hit with next 😂 😭).

I am not sure how I feel about this series. It makes me impatient and then throws something that makes my heart flutter. Then drags some more and then comes back swinging with a fabulous dialogue. Plot conveniences apart, the cast is doing such a terrific job that you cannot but feel for them.
A couple of things I absolutely loved:
I love the Crown Prince and Crown Princess. When she said she would repay Gil Chai when CP became the King, it made my heart weep.
In the end, when Gil Chai gives it back to her terrible husband - Oh! That chutzpah! Who is he to divorce her, she will divorce him!!
What is not gelling with me are a few things:
What was the point of sending away Jong Jong? Just to separate Gil Chae from her? While I liked that she came away quickly and they did not linger on it, the whole thing felt forced and anti-climatic.
For months - he does not eat (or hides eating?), keeping Gil Chai in the dark.....she was ready, and he was ready, she had obviously decided not to go back to her husband while he never cared about her state of relationship, so what stopped their romance? The entire thing felt disjointed. I didn't feel their romance as I should have. The sword of separation constantly hanging does not help matters either.

I don't think that GC was with him in the room or the house every second of the day, LOL. And I didn't have the impression that it was that long at first watch. Sure, I see them plowing the land but they didn't show us what and when. It was in September at Hong Taiji died so they could have sown something else or preparing some other land for future plowing. The harvest could have been from the sowing shown with the HAHA cameo episode 11.

" Jang-hyun confesses that the rumors are true: he was born a government slave."
I'm confused. In the previous flashback (EPS 12), his sister and young Jang Hyun were in noble attire. Jang Hyun was being carried by a servant. I thought he was born into a noble family since he could also attend school. (I'm guessing since he had a book in his hands.)

Technically, he didn't say he was "born" a government slave. He might have become one as a child, though how that might have happened escapes me. What we know so far is:
1) He was a noble as a kid. He had an elder sister who smiled at a slave. Something tragic happened to said sister.
2) Still as a kid dressed in finery, without shoes, he cried his heart out in the rain, yelling "father!" while someone was beating someone inside. I had assumed it was his father being beaten, but it might be the father doing the beating. Possible victim: the slave.
3) As a teenager Jang Hyun himself is a slave and saved Ryang Eum (in a very weird and disturbing scene). He either killed or deeply wounded the abusive master so they ran away to join Yang Chun's gang.
4) As a grown up he apparently bought a title as a nobleman, or at least spread the rumour so well that even Yang Chun believes it.
I really don't understand why the drama has to hold back on his background for so long. It made it really hard for me to understand or connect with Jang Hyun. Even Gil Chae's past is odd. Where is her mother? Give me the traditional child episodes any day and spare me the ridiculous reveals later on. One of my favourite things about old sageuks is discovering child actors in those early episodes.
Oh well, I've said enough. Many viewers are enjoying this drama and I wouldn't want to hang around as a little black rain cloud.

3. We found out that his supposed grandfather died in the same day he "died"/left. How that will be played, will found out soon, I hope. One of the possibilities: JH killed the grandfather, maybe he was the one pushing his sister to suicide?
"I really don't understand why the drama has to hold back on his background for so long. It made it really hard for me to understand or connect with Jang Hyun."
I think that not showing us is so we could see her accepting JH even though he was "born" a slave. It has to do with GC not accepting a former slave as her husband until now and breaking away from that mentality. It's about her real growth.
And this, this where she (the writer) breaks it away from GWTW.

Good observation about 3. Something tragic happened to that family no doubt.
"It has to do with GC not accepting a former slave as her husband until now and breaking away from that mentality."
I had never once thought that Gil Chae's treatment of Jang Hyun was because of class prejudice. I thought she had rejected him because she considered him a playboy and that he never offered anything stable. I would think that after everything they went through in the war, and the fact she had to work with her own hands to create her mini-dagger business, that she saw him as an equal. That she was not the snobbish type. On top of that, she had romantic dreams of meeting her husband, and even saw Jang Hyun's face. If you are right and her treatment of Jang Hyun thus far has been due to class, then I've misunderstood her character all this time. Oh dear. :/

I think it is about class foremost. I don't think that the rumours about him being a playboy would have landed as hard if she didn't hear that he bought his nobility. And that he was a merchant. How could she ever trust and be associated with this person? Her, the daughter of a school director. Him, someone that bought his nobility and a merchant. She had other plans, wanted to know how the capital nobility behaves and what it likes so she could socialize with them. She didn't want to merry just anyone, but the best noble in town (turns out that he was the one not born into nobility but our JH was). I truly believe that if she knew that he is the son of one of the most proeminent scholar, she would have droped her first crash in an instant (she wanted the scholar and now the scholar is JH's father pupil...love it)
I will continue later, I am tied up with something else.

And there was the hill conversation in episode 7/8 where he is so tough on her, saying that she hates the fact that she likes a man like him, that she is not as noble as she thinks because she likes her best friend man and asks her what does the other have that he doesn't, but he already knew the answer.
And I really believe now that she felt as she said in the ep. 10 letter. She really didn't. She dreamed of him, sure but when faced with an answer or decision to make she always backtracked because, I think, she thought less of his origins.
After she got married I understood that she enjoyed the benfits of a noble wife by the way she talked with her employee and his grandson, the policemen when she tried to bribe him and even after the kidnapping, when she said that because she was noble the kidnappers will get in trouble.
And that is also why maybe she really hide from him or not ask for his help. And the way she pulled when he asked her "why". I think she never thought that she would be the same as him, a slave.
But actually he wasn't because, ya know, kdrama 🤣

@kodra GC makes for a fascinating character. We first learn of her as a woman ill-fitting in her core personality as an ideal Joseon woman (as JH reminds her far too often) yet also striving very much to succeed within it. And why not? Marriage, a suitable marriage, was a noble girl’s only available vocation. And it brought with it tremendous privileges as you said.
But it was part of her innate values that allowed GC to move past class prejudices to first protect her maids and form friendships, then to become a businesswoman despite those class barriers. A gradual transformation. But to marry below her status is a whole another step. Yes, she did waver, but it took her own experience as a slave (combined with WM’s rejection (first!) and JH’s rescue (later!)) to overcome her remaining resistance.
I don’t know if without those exceptional circumstances, she’d have thrown off the straightjacket of conventional Joseon class values. But the writer showed us from the beginning she always had it within her so it wasn’t the usual unbelievable love-makes-characters-do-crazy-things rationale. A well done arc.

Thank you @Kodra for the detailed response. You make intriguing points. I had indeed noticed how after her marriage in Part 2 she spoke more of her status.
However, until this episode she didn't know that Jang Hyun had been a government slave, only that he was a merchant (commoner). She had always addressed him as "Jang Hyun Young Master" and not in a sarcastic way I think. Gil Chae's development in Part 1 suggested that she doesn't care about Joseon conventions. And yet now it turns out that the reason she never accepted Jang Hyun was because he wasn't a "true blooded" nobleman? Hmm. It may be part of the story but I don't think its the driving force.
Anyway, I guess we will have to disagree on this one. You may be right and I wish the story had been told differently.

Thank you also for your response.
The rumours were that he bought his title, so he could have been a commoner or a slave. Joseon did not allow marriages between classes to maintain noble bloodline. The stigma associated with not coming from pure blood was shown in the first episode.
GC did indeed not care about some Joseon conventions and JH liked that about her, saw her potential, but not all of them. And not because of any fault of her, but because of the rigorous system she was brought up in and had to live in. I find her change fascinated.

That makes the most sense, but I'm open to the possibility that Jang Hyun's mother was a government slave and his nobility was from his father.
3. I hope their slave owner is dead. He is the worst kind of evil. It's apparent that he also sexually abused Ryang-eun. He didn't like that the other man fed him food from his plate.

I think @alathe did not get that right. He did not confess that he was BORN a government slave, but that he worked as one; there is a considerable difference. A noble or merchant class person could fall into debt towards the government and then become a government slave, to my knowledge. Also, if he ran away from home at some point after his sister’s suicide and the obvious torture of someone by (most likely) his birth father — could he then not also become a government slave? — Another thing I found strange in this context: the cut from the «Saint of Joseon»’s remembrance for his father AND son’s anniversary of their deaths to Jang Hyeon … who could be his son (age-wise). Though I think this would be really far-stretched as plot element (at least in my view), it struck me as odd that one was mentioned, and then the other one shown.

If @alathe is correct, then there is a possibility that Jang Hyun was a half-noble. His mother could have been a gaesang, a government slave. It doesn't bother him that he lived in a gibang.
Jang Hyun would still have some noble privileges, except he would not be allowed to take the state exam or apply for a government post.

I don't know about that, sorry.
I know some were daughters of fallen nobles convicted of serious crimes like treason. Some poor commoners would send their daughters to be trained as gaesangs to avoid starvation and help their families by sending money home.
IIRC, they were paid by the government, and that's why Gil Chae was trying to sell the daggers to them.

I found episode 15 a lovely interlude, not only did Gil-chae fully realize Jang Hyun’s love for her and her own for him, she also gained peace, friendship and her sense of self-worth in work—just what a traumatized survivor needed for what she’ll face in the next episode.
Yeah, him laying comatose for months was ridiculous, never mind keeping that body. But maybe he followed one of the prison workouts in his room? 😅 More importantly, I was down for that ab-flash and almost kiss. 🤣 However, I still don’t love the princess arc, but enough has been said about her. I’m hoping her political situation with the death of her father will give the princess a more complex arc than the current one as a scheming, jealous 2FL, and not just a comeuppance alone. But mostly I’m feeling sad for Ryang-eum, who I think more and more is likely to be the prisoner we saw in Episode 1. I don’t like seeing another tragic gay arc, but at least he has been portrayed with compassion, in some measure thanks to the actor.
I fully expected GC-JH to part again in Episode 16. It was predicted by the old biddies in the early episodes, but also because we know the writer, much in the manner feminist historians, is retelling history to center women’s experiences. (Hence I think the emphasis on the brutal treatment of female captives and slaves in general, which written history does not do justice to, but what some found too much.) And GC is in part a vehicle to tell the story of the unjust treatment of the returned women. I also expected GC’s husband’s reaction, her father’s too since that was the reality. It helps (actually, hurts a lot) that I live in a society where families still sometimes kill their female relatives for losing their “honor”. It was empowering and hopeful as @kodra said seeing GC stand up for herself—and to see supportive men like JH as well.
I’ve seen GC being criticized for committing “adultery” (or almost) with JH after her rescue in some forums, which boggles my mind given his abandonment of her. I would have had no problem at all with her giving hubby a finger in the rearview mirror. But given the reactions, it was absolutely right for GC to return and divorce—and a historical reality. Can she remarry? I think Kiara said it was complicated. (Did the writer hint at a resolution by JH saying he’s willing to give up his purchased nobility?) What also gives me hope, as some Beanies said way back when, is that if there were any two in this suffocating society who would defy conventions, it’d be these two. GC wasn’t ready for that at the end of Part 1. She is now.
But if there’s one more thing I could change since the beginning of Part 2, it's to cut down the many twists and turns, repetitions. Instead, I want the drama to slow down and explore some of the issues in depth (say her return to Joseon in the last episode). But only four episodes to go and lots needs to happen. I guess I’ll buckle in my seatbelt.

Holy complicated.
To me, they were both in the wrong. She stayed behind to care for Jang Hyun, who is not her husband, rekindling romantic feelings, relationship, or whatever you call it. If he knew what we viewers know, he would have used it against her as adultery.
The husband abandoned her and married another woman, which is even worse, but the noblemen were allowed to have concubines. Legally, I believe she does have the right to divorce him for abandoning her. On the other hand, she is seen as a spoiled woman, and it would be up to the husband to divorce her or not.
It's unsettling to me the way it's being handled. Where is Attorney Kang (Woo DoHwan) when we need him?

Complicated indeed. Thanks for the info. We shall find out.
I can't say I agree they're equally wrong. If her husband had loved her enough, he wouldn't have left her to her awful fate as a slave. He cared more for his reputation than her. It all snowballed from there. It makes me very sad to hear folks in the 21st century say she needs to be bound to a man like that till death.

I don't even think he should have "loved her enough" to save her from torture and rape. He should have just cared a tiny bit about her wellbeing.
If he bought her back and divorced her, while disapproving, we would have been able to somewhat understand his decision. Instead, not only did he left her, he also blocked further help from reaching her (telling Yoon Joon that he has sent help). Gil Chae did not own Won Moo anything.

Yeah, he failed the basic human decency test. There was definitely an element of misogyny in that failure tho. In an admittedly heavy handed way, the show told us he could see the value of a captive son, a stranger’s son, but not his own “soiled” wife. I didn’t think of it, but I agree, he could have bought her and then divorced if need be—terrible still but a lesser evil—but he didn’t. Yet, she's being condemned for not wanting to go back to a husband who chose she remain in sexual slavery. 🤷🏽♀️

17th century Joseon's women were harshly discriminated against. That's the reality of this era.
"The most detested clause in the legal code of the Joseon period was related to divorce. At that time, divorce often meant a husband kicking his wife out of the house on his whim. With two notable exceptions, there was no clause allowing for a woman to divorce of her own volition. The first exception applied in the event that a man ran away from his wife and did not return for a long time, in which case the man's wife could appeal to the government and obtain permission to divorce. The second exception applied if a man beat the wife, in which case the woman in question could divorce him, though only with his consent."
https://sungjinyang.com/1998/06/23/choson-women-harshly-discriminated/
For Gil Chae to say that she is divorcing him because she gave Jang Hyun her heart in Shenyang does make sense to us, but in that era, no.

It could be different translations (and I don't speak Korean). But in mine GC said, she would agree if he asked for divorce, not that she is divorcing him. And she'd agree not for his reasoning (damaged goods) but hers (her heart).
So it sounds in accordance to your research. Thanks again for looking that up. We have to keep reminding ourselves that in Joseon (and much of the world till recently) marriage was a contract transferring ownership of a woman from her father to her husband (hence my use of the phrase 'damaged goods'). Depressing as heck, and still culturally/socially true in many countries.

Women in that era were allowed to ask for a divorce if they were abandoned. Also, at that time a noble could have only a wife from the same status and concubines from lower ones. So he couldn't have two wives. We don't know if he married the other one already but she looked like she was also noble.
She also said that if he would have asked for divorce because of her being "spoiled" she would have fought it. Probably she would have won due to the the family gaining wealth during the marriage ( one of the 3 clauses which a divorce could be denied) . But she is not fighting it because of JH.

Farewell comments
*Yes, Joseon people singing in the fields was nice. Despite everything, they managed to grow something in that barren soil. Finally, a bit of hope in a drama that has crushed hopes so often. Crown Prince, Crown Princess, you have done well. ❤️ Also, thank you for recognizing Gil Chae’s role in saving your kid back on the island.
* Jong Jong and Goo Jam, I hope your masters let you go (wait, Goo Jam has no master!) but anyhow, be happy and live a good life. It was weird but cute to see the drama give you fluffy romantic scenes when everything pointed towards a dark outcome to Jong Jong’s capture.
*I lost my Goryeo celadon bet @jerrykuvira. Not only did Won Moo lie about sending someone to Shenyang, but he also decided to take in a concubine. The man is trash. Alas, Gil Chae is married and I don’t condone adultery on any side, so Won Moo has to die before I can root for the OTP.
*Which brings me to my last comment. I can’t root for the OTP. For 15 episodes they have been unable to talk to each other or be honest. They can die for each other but they can’t be together. Not even Namgoong Min can convince me if that.
See you around beanies.
P.S. Gone With The Wind may have been the writer’s inspiration, but to quote Ryang Eum, it is also its curse. It trapped the characters into narrative corners and did not allowed them to develop organically, so that by this point, this particular viewer, frankly, doesn’t give a damn.
P.S.S.: I may lose another bet, but I don’t buy the line that Jang Hyun was born a government slave. His childhood flashback was that of a noble. Additionally, the way the scene cut abruptly from Nam Yeon Joon’s new mentor mourning “the loss of his son” to Jang Hyun fanning himself tells me that… dun dun dun… this powerful Joseon scholar is his father. See if I’m right.

Nooo, not even for Crown Prince Sohyeon? 😢 I don't blame you; I'll keep the notes on him for a different drama. This poor crown prince has been stripped of his intelligence and given to the ML.
"Yes, Joseon people singing in the fields was nice."
That was my favorite! A pansori song reflects this period and much happier times in Neunggun-ri village. The only thing missing was the Makgeolli.
I'm with you regarding GWTW. I should not have watched it during the break. I said the same thing about the flashback.

I was equally disappointed by the reveal @wishfultoki. Got a concubine? Got her pregnant? Wow! Just wow. There's no limit to how much Won-mo is going to annoy me.
And he has the nerve to ask if she was abused. How dare he? He doesn't deserve an answer. What he deserves is Gil-chae's hands on his cheeks, not in public, but when she came by the forge.
He's still using her intellectual property to finance his house. This man is trash.

On adultery - well, the husband had left her behind to be a sex slave. And now wants confirmation that she is unsoiled before he can take her back. I would not mind him dying, but Gil Chai was in her rights to stay back with Jang Hyun. If she had to be sex slave, she might as well be with someone she loves.

The writer actually manages to surprise me again. Who would have thought that it is her father who tries to strangle Gil-chae. Many of us guessed the useless husband for sure. Since her father is demented (probably Alzheimer's), I can't even be mad at him.
Also, I wouldn't have expected Gil-chae's husband to remarry, thus raising the possibility of a divorce. It's a shame he gets off so easily, I had considerably more bloodthirsty desires.
I'm not a fan of the brthsecret storyline, but if the scholar really is Jang-hyun's father and this can help FL and ML not die in the end and be together for it, it's fine with me. I don't see why it should matter who Jang-hyun's father is now otherwise, after all you clearly saw in episode 15 that Gil-chae doesn't care.
You think Gil-chae and Jang-hyun are finally communicating openly and honestly, and then they take another step backwards in episode 16. Couldn't Jang-hyun have said why he wants to send her back to Joseon? And even if he doesn't, how can Gil-chae believe his lies when she knows all he's done for her over the years. I wouldn't have had a problem with her seeing through him and still going along with his game so he wouldn't have to worry about her. But probably it was more important for the writer to show parallels to episode 10, just with the roles reversed.
Nevertheless, I continue to love this drama, mostly because of Gil-chae. Rarely have I cheered two slaps so much, and the way she asks her pathetic husband for a divorce again shows what a strong woman she is.
Thanks to all the misleading tricks the makers have been playing lately, I'm more and more convinced that Jang-hyun will survive the scene from episode 1 on the beach. Especially since his opponents are former slaves whom he helped to freedom.

The writer is a coward. I thought it was a bold move to marry Gil-Chae to Won-Moo. For me, it made sense, Jang-hyun was offering her to run away, Won-Moo was offering her a stable life.
But then? The writer decided to omit everything about the marriage. We barely saw the first night and then there was a jump in time. They didn't mention the fact they have no kid after 2 years. Then she was kidnapped and found back Jang-Hyun. It didn't bother her to stay so long after her release, she didn't think to her family or husband. And of course, Won-Moo betrayed, she got a good reason to divorce. So what was the point of this marriage? It's like it never existed except to part our leads.
I was happy that Jong-Jong was saved but really? He came the only night her master wanted to abuse her? What a timing.
Ryang-eum's flashback was very sad. He looked like a nice and lovely boy. Honestly, he's my favourite character. He was childish with the curse, but he was not wrong. Jang-Hyun took the worst decisions regarding Gil-Chae. They finally get back together and his first action? Lying to her... again... At this point, I really don't like them as a couple. 😅

You took the words right out of my mouth. I am so disappointed with this aspect of the story. What happened during those two years of marriage? The show would have viewers believe they remained polite acquaintances all that time. We never got to see how their relationship developed. I would not have expected Gil-chae to be in love with Won-moo, but I would think she at least cared for him to some extent.
Gil-chae told Won-moo what kind of woman he would be getting for a wife if he decided to marry her. He supposedly knew what he was getting into with this resourceful and strong-willed person. That had to account for something with respect to his feelings.
I too thought that he had genuinely sent someone in his stead to continue to search for her. Instead, we are to believe it was all a farce.
And then when she could have left for Joseon, Gil-chae chose to stay behind. Considering how much time has passed with no word from her, and if he believed his first wife dead or missing, I could almost understand that Won-moo would have taken a second wife and started having a family.
Gil-chae had chosen both her family and Won-moo over Jang-hyun years earlier, but she "forgot" about both when she and Jang-hyun were reunited in Qing.

I agree with mostly everything but one thing - she was right not to think of her husbnd when she was with Jang Hyun. The POS left her to be a sex slave and die. She owed him nothing.
I think the theme is ultimately going to be remarriage, because it was prohibited at that time.

From Gil-chae's perspective, she could have thought the slave master was lying to her to demoralize her. Then again, maybe she did believe him, but I'm not too sure about that.

Later Jang Hyun tells her too - your husband abandoned you, so you do not have to go back to him, stay with me. Gu Jam had gotten the info from the slave trader too. So she knew. Plus Ryang Yum comes to tell Jang Hyun only after her husband goes back empty handed (he sees Ean Ha leaving to search for Gil Chai).

I did forget to mention one thing I loved - Gil Chai's rape/abuse - I totally saw what the writers/directors did here.
Whether she was raped or not is at the end truly immeterial. The abuse she underwent did not need a name . The way the husband and even her sister harped on it drove home the point poignantly. Somehow her return is completely overshadowed by was she-was she not. To Jang Hyun it did not matter. And to Gil Chai, it never was the point. Kudos to the writers/director here.

It also sadly reflects of the mindset of many I know who are watching the show. I had a conversation with someone close and for some reason, Gil Chai remaining chaste has become very important for the JangChae romance to sail to them, and that made me super mad. Why is it important? Does it diminish her suffering somehow if she wasn't? Does it somehow increase her worth if she wasn't? How does it change the person who underwent brutality no matter how you see it?
I am coming to admire Eun-Ae's husband too. The man always had the spine, he found it just in time.

Thank you, as always, for the wonderful recap @Alathe :)
It always stings a little when a show that had the potential to become an all-time favorite becomes something you have mixed feelings about. I’ve adopted an “I’ll wait and see” stance so far on Part 2, but with 4 episodes left, I have to come to terms with some of my disappointments.
I understand and respect what writer Hwang Jin Young is doing here with historical commentary, but I feel in Part 2 it has come at the expense of character. While the historical events churn and her criticism of ideas of female chastity become evermore hit-you-over-the-head, the characters feel like they’re going in circles. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the comedy of Jang Hyun pretending to be ill (for MONTHS?), but there is no better demonstration of the writer being perpetually unable to write our ML+FL actually *together* than having Jang Hyun fake a coma the entire time Gil Chae is finally by his side. The romance hasn’t totally lost me, and I’m more tolerant of noble idiocy and miscommunication than most, but still I can’t help but feel the constant cat-and-mouse has taken the wind from the Jangchae swoony romance sails.
One of my favorite characters, Eun Ae, has essentially been MIA for six eps. And maybe one of my sorest spots is Ryang Eum, whose great set-up and fantastic young actor have been squandered by a writer who won’t let him do anything but pine for Jang Hyun and hiss at Gil Chae. For a show that is so critical of the treatment of women at this time, for it to not dig into the marginalization of its one gay character in any meaningful way and instead put on “audience hate” target on his back, forever undercutting any tragic backstory flashbacks, is disappointing.
I am still in it until the end and look forward to being able to discuss once I have the whole of the show to consider. But I am quite sad to be feeling this way about this show :(

Honestly I was a bit confused by them, and wasn't paying as much attention to them as I should've/could've.
Some part of it I thought said he (the leader) was loyal to the previous King (Gwanghae) but then I wondered why he was still alive then. I might've missed what they were actually saying there.
And then there was a highly suspicious cut from the scholar saying "this day he lost his father and his son" "he had a son?", right to Jang Hyun... 👀
I'm not really into theories right now but I still think it'd make sense if JH's family were GH supporters and if he WAS the son of a noble (flashback with his sister) but went missing and was thought dead at a young age, but actually became a government slave, where he meets RE.
But tbh. I also don't think I care that much anymore. 😅😅

I’ve been getting my thoughts in order for the last two days and still don’t know what best way to structure them so I’m just going to word vomit.
Parts of Show I’m Still Enjoying:
- the politicking didn’t catch my interest as much in the first part (the romance and the action had me swept up) and took me a rewatch plus extracurricular reading on history to fully understand and appreciate (big thanks to Kiara and others who’ve been posting timelines for us), but this second part’s strongest suit has been in the depiction of Crown Prince Sohyeon’s adjustment in Qing and his court’s maneuvering the obstacles the Qing have been dropping on them.
- Gil Chae’s unwavering strength and steadfastness to her values despite the immense pressure that threatens to beat her down. Her stance at the end was the highlight of this week’s episodes for me, the fact that even if she wanted to she would not have let Won Moo divorce her for what she has endured because it would be same as herself agreeing she was tainted. Her continued rejection of the conventional standards of the time and her refusal to see herself as inferior due to anything she has faced or been subjected to is a hallmark of her character whose foundation began in the first part and was beautifully developed throughout the first and second season. Her request to keep daggers for self defense rather than choosing to hide away or go to a place where she may not be known as a “spoiled” woman is true to her character. She won’t run away from her circumstances.
The Irksome Parts:
-The comic element of Jang Hyun’s pretend around Gil Chae and his friends begrudging participating did complete its intended purpose and then overextended its stay. We spent half an episode (30 minutes of precious time!) in this farce for laughs when a singular scene or two could have sufficed and we could’ve spent the other time having the leads engage in conversation.
My fanfiction version of how I wish this played out: Jang Hyun realizes Gil Chae wishes to stay until he recovers and keeps up his game for about a week after he’s awakened from his coma. Then Gil Chae and Ryang Eum have their discussion where RE targets GC with a heaping of guilt to get her to leave, but GC staunchly refuses and pledges to stay. Then RE tells JH that, so JH realizes GC will stay until he’s fully recovered, not just while he’s comatose and leaves bed immediately. Cue a montage scene of them spending time together while she aids in his recovery interspersed with desperately needed candid conversations. We could’ve gotten a lighthearted and heartwarming montage, plus watching them slowly begin to know each other again. This would’ve also induced a heavier reaction from me during their parting, rather than another contrived and frustrating separation following a near empty reunion.
The storytelling and character studies continue to get weaker.
I have other thoughts, including the writer’s treatment of Ryan’s Eum (they covered much of his backstory, trauma, and connection to JH in so 15 and then he didn’t show up at all in 16), the pacing of the second part in regards to romance within a political drama or vice verse, and my qualms with the romantic developments (or quite frankly, lack thereof ) but in a following post.

I liked these episodes. I am here for a romance. The historical pieces are fine. I've learned some interesting bits of information and of course, confirmed that, no matter where, war is hell. However, I reiterate, I am here for a romance. I am not a big fan of melodramas or angst (too stressful like The Red Sleeve) but they seem to go hand-in-hand with these historical dramas. That being said, I think a lot of the reviews, in my sole opinion, are putting too much into today's timeframe. To me, what's a 6-month coma in the context of 2 loves being separated for 2 years, and having a semi-courtship/flirtation over what, 2-4 years? I was thankful for the lightness and a semi-focus on just them. I also feels like it reinforces JH's hopeless devotion to this feckless woman, who to me, is sometimes careless in handling his feelings. That being said, it only took these 6 months for this woman to FINALLY relent and take a proactive stance in putting action to her affections. For me, although I like her spunk and grit, sometimes she's a bit much (i.e. her constant protests are sometimes exhausting!). What makes her a great heroine, does not necessarily make her the best lover or object of one's romantic affections. BUT after RE's accusations backfired on him (poor fella) AND GC realized she had a challenger in the ever-loyal and ever-present RE AND 6 months of time, she was finally open to some affection and bearing of parts of her soul. I'm here for it! If times are tough for a female taken by barbarians against her will in a conservative Joseon society, I can't imagine it's any better for a male who loves another male openly. I believe RE's history has been explained quite clearly, with dignity and poignancy. I also liked that he made it clear to BOTH leads, where his affections lie, and no, they are not brotherly. Heck, even the old guy picked up on it! Of course, I loved the heart-to-heart between the ML & the FL in the forest. I didn't think it went far enough, but the fact that it went is still in the right direction! To me, I believe JH didn't tell her the truth for his decision, is in part, because he's putting other people before her but I also think he's being protective. Maybe his thinking is flawed and misplaced, I believe it is sincere nonetheless. He's man, in a Joseon era where he has been mistreated and thrown away. Also, I think he has a right to be concerned with GC's (possibly) defiant reaction, especially in light of the cold, relentlessness of the imperial princess. JH is a businessman who is used to dealing (successfully) with parties on the opposite ends of the spectrum AND is able to satisfy everyone. The imperial princess, is what she is, to me. Like the rest of those of the Qing people, she is fascinated (and jealous) by their beauty, their convictions of their beliefs and their loyalty. She took one look at JH's soulful eyes and this exquisite cheekbones and decided she wanted some of that for herself. So she wants love...she's human. She is also very much a product of her royal environment...she's carelessly cruel to gain her own selfish needs. Not sure what more could be learned from her role be expanded other than an additional foil for the OTP. However, I now believe she's the one waiting for JH's return. However, I am here for the OTP romance!

I wrote a few days ago that I would work out the timeline (almost frame by frame). I won’t have that in time for another set of two episodes tomorrow and Saturday. Nevertheless I would like to mention a few more things here.
I got both Korean language srt files (the hard-of-hearing and the normal one) for —so far—, all 16 episodes. I have now developed a format where I can put both Korean versions plus the viki translations plus a Google Translate Romanisation in one tab of an Excel file. I am working, at present, on EP. 16 ; this covers so far 89 A4 pages (landscape) and 3890 rows …As it sounds, it IS an enormously laborious process, but a precise one, which has several advantages. One is that one does not miss little bits of information which were spoken (and written on screen) ; another one is that one gets the exact length of screen time and information on the individual places of the drama. So for example, I moved from the scene in the woods (Jang Hyeon/Gak-Hwa) to the Gil Chae’s/Ryan-Eum’s clashing in the bedroom at Jang Hyeon’s compound, then to Hong Taji’s death bed, and then to the Joseon court … etc. At the moment I am at row 545 …
While doing this I also noticed again, that we have not mentioned in these recaps a lot about the Joseon politics — which is quite important and essential. But here goes what I wrote before: one needs to know a lot to understand a lot. I noticed in the past too that both Joseon and the Jurchen/Manchu/Qing people of interest have almost entirely been historically accurate. There seems to be very little fictionalisation. One might think of two exceptions: (a) Crown Prince Sohyeon is not (and will not) be portrayed in all his depth. As @kiara wrote before, most of this is given in the sageuk to the (mostly fictional) hero Jang Hyeon; (b) is the Qing princess Makata, Hong Taji’s favourite daughter, here called Gak-Hwa. She is instrumentalised as rival to Gil Chae for the affection of Jang Hyeon, next to having indeed some depth and facettes as the real-life Qing princess will have had. Also, I did get the feeling that the writer showed with this character also the limitations even a Qing princess —a woman after all— was experiencing : she will be married off again for the « raison d’état » …
But back to my point about Joseon politics under Injo. In particular in this episode (again) there is a series of little remarks and comments made in the court which refer to the factual events which happened in these years up to the Crown Prince’s second visit to Joseon. My sources had given that second visit as having happened in (lunar calendar) December 1643 (so solar calendar January 1644). However, in our film version it was not winter when they travelled and arrived in Joseon … so I don’t know for sure.
Moving forward, I am fairly certain that the series will not show the six or so months the crown prince spent with Dorgon in Beijing after Ming’s fall in April 1644. What will the production do? I believe the drama will further develop the (restrictive, ultra-conservative) atmosphere at the Joseon court under Injo to set up the return of the Crown Prince and his 300 people strong entourage for May 1645. In Qing, from EP. 16 there is still that request of Gak-Hwa to Jong Hyeon to take care of her for a while, which needs, from a viewer’s perspective, some explanation and follow up/closure. On the romance part of this drama, we know from the 30 sec preview onto EP. 17 that there will be a reunion between (a now divorced) Gil Chae and Jang Hyeon. But as before, I am sure there is some other obstacle coming up in EP. 18 … most likely circling around the obscure death of the Crown Prince and the horrendous events happening afterwards. Both Jang Hyeon and Gil Chae are the Prince and Princess’s people — so I am sure they will not get out of this unscathed.
What I would want to look out for is the, for me, most likely change and evolvement of Gil Chae’s first love and her best friend’s husband, who is now a Sarim scholar (and 5th rank sagaebu). My feeling is that we will see him change to support Jang Hyun’s/Gil Chae’s cause.
Lastly, I would really like to write an essay about social stratification in the Joseon society, but that won’t happen anytime soon… We get too little solid and sophisticated information in these sageuks ; here, too, goes what I said above: one needs to know a lot to understand a lot.

Waow, you really analyze every details.
Have you decided on the bluray?
If ever, we don't have the right to talk about the teasers for the next episodes, it counts as a spoiler :)

Ah okay, sorry, I did not realise that ... yes, of course, makes sense thinking about it. I also do this to eventually have good source material for studying Korean ... I am becoming one of these people who are now inspired to learn the language ... :)

It helps when we do the weekly historical part for just the 2 episodes. It'd get overwhelming if we cover the current and future events. History is also a spoiler, especially with this writer following it closely.

@angelshadows50,
It's time-consuming, especially for those of us for whom English is a third language and have very little knowledge of Korean. Thank you for your analysis! I am tired, so I will keep the timeline brief.
I still need to watch the court scenes because I skimmed through them in the last four episodes.

Lastly, I would really like to write an essay about social stratification in the Joseon society but that won’t happen anytime soon… If/when you ever get around to it, please do tag me as well. I often hear of it described as a caste system, which fascinates and horrifies me. But the basic online descriptions are not very good.

Will do! I'll make a note to myself, so when I get around to doing this properly I'll tag you. Also, just for now, the term «caste system» is in my view a mis-naming, both for India (where it attempts to summarise a particular social system) and, as analogy, for Korea. East Indian history is even more fascinating (and misrepresented) than Korean history, I should say.

The very term "caste" was actually a misnomer imposed by the Portugese to describe an India that in fact was far more complex than as described.
East Indian history, unfortunately, is quite incomplete when compared to Europe, China or Korea, largely due to the lack of writing materials which would store for lengthy periods of time.

I came across an interesting article that, among other things, gives some insights on the social stratification in Joseon. It focuses mainly on the jelousy in polygamy marriages but it explaines rather well the separation of classes and the extent the elite females and the non-elite ones had to suffer. And the non-elite males. There are also a few true cases and how the kings at that time judged them.

I’m with the other beanies who are going to skim the last few episodes. When a kdrama becomes a chore for me to watch due to mostly unrelenting emotional and physical chaos, I just don’t enjoy it enough to stay invested in it. Watching a show shouldn’t be exhausting and My Dearest has drained me completely.

The "extension" is doing us no favors.
Better a shorter but tightly knit drama than a money grab extension!

@alathe - thanks as always for your recaps. I'm also still rooting for our OTP!
I'm still in the minority here just enjoying the drama, like all of it - long episodes, the back and forth, push and pull, angst, soundtrack, and everything people seem to not care for, etc. I guess I'm just a sucker? lol.
I rarely have time to watch anything these days, but every time I get to catch up on these episodes I'm sucked in, immersed, invested, and committed to it all.
Even though logging onto DB and commenting here is still a bit buggy for me ( long lags to load things, time outs, etc.) your recap keeps bringing me back. I appreciate you making it a thorough and fun recap to read without the snark to deter folks who are still enjoying the series like myself. :D Thank you, thank you!

I'm happy you're still enjoying the drama so much. I'm enjoying it a lot as well (tho with some caveats). These characters/actors will be among my favorites for the year.

Oh I have a few caveats as well, lol. I just feel like all the things i like about the series, the impactful moments, meaningful arcs, tension, and characters/actors - in its totality, far outweigh the caveats. I
'm a mood reader/viewer, and lately I've been in the mood for a slow burn kind of series. I'm happy this one has been delivering. Plus I really feel like the relationship developments/character transformation feels realistic, and not like an overnight 360 change that other fluffier or lighter sageuks might have taken.
I'm happy you're enjoying it too. It's nice reading a few positive comments about the show, I started to think I was being brainwashed by the OSTs or something. ;D

Yes, she was gang raped when she was sold to the gambling den. She bit off the ears of the owner who then dropped her back. He rescued her when she was getting resold.

We don't know.
Personally, I don't think she was raped. Nothing in her behavior after made look like she suffered from it.

I think it becomes clear in many of the scenes -
the way she turns away when Eun Ae and Jong Jong asks her about her ordeal.
And of course when she asks that if Jang Hyun would be ok because she was abused (I think that was the stand out scene of 2023) he said he would hug her because she must have suffered so....it makes sense too. The men bought her. Physical violence for them was no big deal. Why would they let a trussed up female slave just go....

She didn't answer because it shouldn't be asked and because it shouldn't be a reason for people to accept her or not.
For the scene with Jang Hyun, it was normal to say that because just the fact to be touched by someones else, it was already too much. She was touched, she had to be nacked in front of other people.
But when they showed several times how Eun-Ae was traumatized by her assault, they never showed Gil Chae was with nighmares or being hesitant with Jang Hyun when they became intim for example.

This.
Yes, this is the point. The one that Jang Hyun explains to her.
He already knew she was touched, she was penned in a cage like an animal being tossed around by ruthless men for more than a year. He already knew she was subjected to atrocities. He rescued her from getting sold in the market. Her seller prostituted her for the night to Jang Hyun. After all, she was prime for picking for the Barbarians and delivered to them trussed up like a wild mare.
Their dialogues after he came to know she was free of her husband went like this: (ep 17)
Gil Chae : "I didn't tell you, and you didn't ask, but in Shimyang..." (very telling, no reason for her to start the sentence this way unless she wanted to confide something troubling).
Jang Hyun cuts in.
Jang Hyun : Go ahead if you want to tell me but it does not matter to me. Are you really in the dark how I feel about you? For me you are enough, Namja. Poor, rich, fience, tender, loves me, loves me not - no mater, I love all of Gil Chae. However you are, all I need is Gil Chae.
Gil Chae : (after a long tearful pause) All right. But then, what about Gil Chae who was defiled by barbarians?
Jang Hyun : (The momentary grief for her in his eyes): Then I will embrace her because she must have suffered so.
Defiled in historical terms is 'rape', or to take away the chastity of a woman. Now I do not know what was the Korean word used, but my guess is they tried a literal translation because conservative societies often beat around the bush and avoid using sexual words even today.
My Dearest didn't shy away from showing the war brutalities and this was one of the starkest reality of that war - widespread rape of Joseon women and the subsequent fall out.
Gil Chae has been shown as an exemplarily courageous woman and she didn't let anything keep her down. Especially by something that was not her fault. Rape victims more often than not are traumatised about intimacy, but there are rare cases where they can thankfully rise above it (there are many such documented cases around the world). She refused to be defined by what others did to her, and Jang Hyun could not care less if she lived in a harem or a nunnery.
Jeez, I forgot how much I love this story.

The production never was shy to show things with Eun-Ae or Jong-Jong or either Jang-Hyun's torture.
They never clearly showed or said it, so it's about interpretation.
We both have different interpretations.

I don't think she would have suffered as others. I took it as how she was, a strong character that overcomes difficult situations and moves on very fast with not much thought. She was brazen and that was what attracted him at first. That was also the difference between her and the model proper woman Eun Ae was and why her first "love" (forgot his name) didn't marry her but chose her friend.
There was also another scene when he saves her from the market. She thought that he was there to have a night with her and not rescue her. I don't think that she would have thought so if she didn't considered herself "tainted" already.
