Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (July 8, 2023)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

See You in My 19th Life: What a fun week for this drama — the beach trip trope really got me! Overall I’m really enjoying how everything unfolds and is revealed in the story; it feels like the first half of the drama was about building/rebuilding all the bonds between the characters so their affections are firmly in place for the second half. That being said, I have no idea where this drama is going, or how serious it will get, or what it really wants to say about its heroine’s fate, so I’m completely enmeshed. And slightly concerned.

Dramaddictally

Currently covering: King the Land

Reflection of You: Is there a support group for this drama? I finished it and now I’m so mixed up I don’t know how to feel. The writing is excellent — gripping from beginning to end — and I later realized it’s from the same screenwriter as Just Between Lovers (though the story is based on a novel). Everyone in the drama is both a victim and a perpetrator. So, even though they’re all “bad” in some way, they’re so well motivated that you really feel for all of them even as you hate them. It’s a complicated mess that I sort of love and admire for being able to pull off that kind of emotional feat. But it left me feeling so awful that I’m not sure why I love it. And it’s interesting because all the drama’s characters feel exactly that way about each other: they love the people that make them feel the worst. All in all, impressive (even if Kim Jae-young deserves better).

King the Land
I have no expectations for this show and let it entertain me after a heavy day. I laugh a lot... and I enjoyed even that stupid cliff scene 😆
It also brings back memories of my short stay in Korea - I trekked through Jirisan Park, starting in Piagol Valley, and slept in a hotel in Gurye.
My only complaint: Too little of Uri Flight Attendant.

19th Life
I think I'm more critical to 19th Life because I expect more from it. It feels scattered a bit and not everything clicks well. But it definitely touches my heart more.
My favourite parts: the past lives (integrated into the current one), Aegyeong, Ahn Bohyun as Soha... and the two sisters (Uri Sunshine is again great). Just... I don't like the approaching doom.

Vampire Taec, 3eps only
It's entertaining, but I'm losing interest.

Hidden Love
If the first week was about Heroine's crush and the second week about Hero's falling in love, this week was about their relationship... and how people around them reacted to it. Duan Jiaxu is so smooth and swoony 😊 and he manages to balance respect and wooing so well. ☺️ (I'm still blushing occasionally).
Though... it is the Brother who often steals the scene. ❤️

There's a part of me that's wistfully hoping for a spin off with the brother from Hidden Love, I really liked his character too!!

His story is covered in another novel, which is also being adapted into a drama. Unfortunately it's being produced by a diff platform so the actors will be completely different 😔.

I love Ha Yoon-kyung's character in EXTRAORDINARY ATTORNEY WOO. I also wonder about the approaching doom in 19TH LIFE. I have not read the webtoon so I do not know if that is part of the story or not- because this to me is set up as a 'finally bringing justice to those who deserve it' story.

As of this week I'm live-watching 7 k-dramas AND 3 c-dramas and my brain feels a little fried. I think some of these will fall by the wayside soon…

ONGOING
Delightfully Deceitful - Moon Ga-young's cameo was nice and served an actual plot purpose!

King the Land - Jin Seon-kyu's cameo was even better and included him singing Taeyang's song 🤣!

See You in My 19th Life - Stairwell scene and impromptu confession were so cute. The sisters together are lovely.

Numbers - A street chase with cars of doom - who knew accountancy was so exciting?

Revenant - The ghost definitely has a sad story that's going to make me question my faith in humanity. Everything about the shaman sacrificing little girls is creepy af.

Heartbeat - Not a fan of the past storyline but present day is cute and funny. The actor playing the SML is really likeable.

Miraculous Brothers - The alternating scene between the book and the homeless man's murder was nicely done. What an evil group of men though.

C-DRAMAS
Completed Hidden Love. Adorable OTP and romance. Two 👍👍.

Twilight (till Ep.20) - I like the lead characters and their stories but the side characters are unwatchable. SO much fast-forwarding. It's 40 episodes so I might not last long.

The Longest Promise (till Ep. 14) - I think TTEOM may have finally cured my dislike of xianxia. The story and the ML character are good, FL character needs a little work.

Fireworks of My Heart (till Ep. 5) - Nightmare C-drama Mom alert! Is it okay to root for the leads to NOT end up together 😬? Watching for Yang Yang with a side of Vin Zhang (whose time is probably numbered).

Planning to watch The Legend of Anle if it comes out next week as scheduled.

I watched the cdrama because I had read the original webnovel and loved it. The drama is different from the novel, but I liked it.

Fireworks: This! I really didn’t want the leads together. I don’t see how this will work. I am ahead in the drama but this social status thing is hard to overcome especially when the leads themselves are not very good together.

I didn’t start twilight because it’s no kiss Allen 😜

Well if you're further ahead and also don't want the leads to get together then I definitely feel vindicated lol. FL's family seems crazy and there's something off about the brother...
As for Allen, I've made my peace with the no kiss thing after Forever and Ever 😅.

KING THE LAND (Ep. 5-6) This week KTL slid a little backward on the enjoyment scale. The opening of the swoon scene was ruined when Gu Won said to Sa-Rang “I will allow it” when she was crying and continued when he refused to respect her boundaries and decisions. The over-the-top rescue scene was a dud moment. The element of Gu Won’s arranged marriage which should have given Sa-Rang an element of relief or suspicion about Gu Won’s motives instead of blind jealousy. The characters personalities appear to be warping to fit filler arcs. I think the overblown Knight in Shining Armor scenes took the wind out of the story sails.

This week the story was too trite and the humor dull. We have seen it time and time before. I think the chemistry is a roller coaster: either hitting high mark or falling flat. I hope her girlfriends interrogate Gu Won to give Sa-Rang some objective, protective feed back about him.

SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE (Ep.5-6 Ji-Eum’s past memories come at a brutal cost. The inclusion of potential reapers to take away loved ones who find out about her reincarnation turns the direction of the series towards darkness. The rule is apparently if you remember you past life and tell someone from it about yourself, bad things will happen to them. In other words, the cost to balance the past memories with the present is if revealed someone from her past has to be taken away from Ji-Eum.

We learn that Seo-Ha’s mother got sick and died, but why was she erased from the family and her son? There appears to be a parallel to Ju-Won’s her life- - - he was the target of the accident. Was it to eliminate his mother’s past memories because she also was reincarnated with memories? Do-Yun’s father was confirmed to be the driver who also died which is the reason Do-Yun is “close” to Seo Ha’s family. There is a lot of misdirection on these mysteries.

The fantasy-romance is quickly turning in to a melodrama with the inclusions of grim reaper vibes. A cascade of villains will be leashed upon our leads which will hijack the original premise. The set-up has now changed to someone having to make a noble sacrifice in order to balance out Ju Won's reincarnation.

LIES HIDDEN IN THE GARDEN (Ep. 5-6) It took 6 episodes before KTH could show some emotion, but LJY continues to perform at a high level. She is now in survival mode after her life hit rock bottom. Again, this could have been a really tightly written movie as the series winds up. This is one of those shows where you really cannot root for any character because of their actions or for Joo-Ran her inactions.

The criss-cross revelations on what happened to Soo-Min by whom was rapid fire but telegraphed in early clues. We knew Jae-Ho was an awful person: gaslighting and drugging his wife, shady business deals, teen prostitution and now murder under the guise of protecting his family. That excuse is cringe to his own family (and the reason why Seung-jae wants to move out.) Sang-eun may be...

. . . off the hook for husband’s demise but out of the insurance money so blackmail is back on the table. Blackmailing a killer is not an easy task. It is hard to see the show ending with any winners.

CELEBRITY (Ep. 1- 12) It started off so slow and uninterestingly (who cares about bitchy neo-SNS #mefirst social butterflies?) but the hook at the end of live stream end was enough to press play for Episode 2. I already knew how social media works: the data mining, attention seekers and the parasitic advertising model where nobodies can become somebodies in the narrow ecosphere of selling out for money and fake status. The writer clearly overvalued the economics of influencer followers and added an unreal element of Kardashian bitchkrieg with the society girls. It was unrealistic to have mere low level influencers have their own Gangnam brand stores.

Seo A-ri is drawn into the trap of IG vulture culture. Status is an alluring drug but the rich socialites look down on influencers as surface trash. It leads to predictable journey into the cult of personality, the worst high school click fights and stereotypical corruption stories.

The story device of Seo A-Ri narrating her story from “beyond the grave” is not new but here it was effective. If you gloss over execution of the dialogue, there were clearly life lessons tried to be shown: wealth is power and power corrupts; certain classes believe they above the law until their greed is too much to be ignored; betrayal usually comes from the inside; and fame is fleeting.

Park Gyu-Young and Kang Min-Hyuk did not show a range of acting emotions throughout the series. The Gabin Girls were mostly on screech mode throughout the series. There were plenty of plot twists to keep things interesting and some good mystery reveals at the end. But at the end, Seo A-Ri walked away not as tarnished or broken as she should have been (emotionally and financially). However, the series was better than I expected ( a low bar) and it had no slow or dragging moments.

I am biased towards PGY so I think she did okay. She and KMH couldve shown better emotions to sell their increased attraction towards the other in the second half.
I agree, despite its flaws, it was better than I expected too.

King the land
So far so good no murder mystery, just misunderstandings in the romance department and woman with too much money and power who does not care about anyone in the chaebol department. Happy with the business as usual in the office based romance drama approach but surely we should start to see the business brain coming into play after all that studying at a prestigious university in the UK. We don’t want the man to to come in from nowhere to take the glory for the sister’s hard work but we do want her to be more aware of the limitations of her ruthless approach to management so they can reach a happy compromise for staff and the business.

See you in my 19th life
Can’t wait for the confirmation re the two fellow ‘memory of past life’ characters and to see if they are friend or foe. Looking forward to seeing what comes next after the battery recharge hug❤️ love this trope; last seen in an art room between Hamin and Somang in Seasons of Blossom.

Sound Candy
They finally dropped three episodes this week after a gap of 2 weeks. Considering two episodes are released a week and it ended last weekend it is very frustrating trying to catch when the episodes will become available. For some reason they have only subbed until the 9th episode which ended with the female lead finally choosing one of the three men chasing after her. As per usual she chose the one who seemed to be the least compatible. Who knows when the final episode will be released with subs. I have been disappointed by this one but think the hazy picture quality combined with the subs delay has made it difficult to stay connected to the story.

In a desperate attempt to fill the emptiness of the week day viewing I have picked up two random Chinese dramas that I found by chance. They are both way too long according to the episode count so let’s see if they hold up or if I will drop and move on.

Master of my own - Chinese
It seems to be a mix of The rational life, for the discrimination in the work place dynamics and What’s wrong with secretary Kim and Nothing but you as the CEO doesn’t understand why his perfect secretary would want to have a life outside of supporting him to live his best life. So far, it’s ok and I have my theories about what will happen.

Make a wish - Chinese
This seems to be the female equivalent of Meow the secret boy. The cat who can turn into a human, knows how to speak one of the Chinese languages and can read is from a parallel universe and wants to return but first must grant a wish to the man who saved her life. Thankfully there is an ambassador from the cat planet who gives her tips on how to survive on planet Earth, yes it is that ridiculous.

Completed

My happy divorced life - Japanese
The six episodes felt stretched, but no one was smoking, yay.

The villain of romance
I only watched because I am in a dry season for mid week dramas. It was not in the same league as the excellent Love playlist. It had a frustrating unnecessary break up but there was an ‘interesting’ secondary couple storyline. They even had a seven year time jump to end the story. I took a hit for the team watching this one. I do not recommend watching even as a filler I don’t think it’s worth the time.

Book
Currently listening to the audio book Sanshiro by Natsume Soseki. It’s a Japanese period piece I initially thought it was the era of Brideshead revisited by Evelyn Waugh which starts with the men meeting at University but that was written after the Second World War and Sanshiro is from 1908. So it is the EM Forster, Room with a view era. It is an interesting reflection on the creatives of the time mainly literary students and artists although science is also mentioned. It presents a slice of life perspective describing clothes, modes of transport, housing, social life and cultural events taking place and the differing perspectives on the merits of western literature and the arts.

It is interesting that the ML in King the Land hasn't been engaging much with the business part of his role, yet. Maybe the FL will galvanize him to take positive action! It's nice to have a more "traditional" rom-com without murders yet!

I really enjoyed Master of My Own. I think it tried to sell itself as some sort of rom-com, but it's more like a workplace/business slice-of-life drama with a side of rom-com. And the rom-com was the weakest part.

Did you find it concerning that in Master of my own, a female secretary was being called into a environment of drunk males in order to take her boss or at one point ex boss home? He has a driver and there are taxi’s. I think that was a ridiculous expectation just because she didn't leave marks on the floor and sorted him out with a honey drink for the morning. He is a grown man and was out with friends why is his welfare her problem? One of the many power games at play. It was interesting that his dad treated his mum the same and then they got married, I dom think the fact he found his dad difficult should have been the mirror he needed to sort himself out.
I am still in the early phase but this element of rude, controlling boss is proper getting on my nerves and is a staple in a lot of work based dramas I have watched recently. It lacks the humour of What wrong with secretary Kim

See You In My 19th Life: 8.5 Nice that we keep seeing the child actors. Everyone seems to like their performances, and while I don't disagree I think part of their advantage is that they keep popping up in relevant flashbacks instead of disappearing in a puff of timeskip like Kim Yoo-jung always used to. Also, they're not as over-used (yet) as she was.

Numbers: 6.5

Revenant: 7.0 Mirror, mirror on the wall... Oh, wait. We have a character who can see ghosts in mirrors, and in another show we have vampires who can't be seen in mirrors. Would she see the ghost of a vampire in a miror?

Heartbeat: 8.0 Roughly every 30 seconds I have to fight off the temptation to send a screenie to "Caption This".

Delightfully Deceitful / Beneficial Fraud: 7.0 One good thing about this show is that it will be followed by Kim So-hyun's new My Lovely Liar. We'll be upgrading from just "deceitful" up to outright "liar".

Shadow Detective 2: 6.5

Inspector Koo: 8.5 Rewatch (days 11/12).

Lies Hidden in My Garden (Episode 5-6) - Mood: C+
Boo, come on Writer, this is supposed to be a thriller! How can it be as obvious as Sang Eun killing her husband and Jae Ho silencing Soo Min, the girl he prostituted? They were supposed to be red herrings! Man, I was getting myself so hyped up in the possibility of the son and Sang Eun’s mother being the killers? The directing and acting is still very good but I hope that the writing can salvage itself in the last week, though deep down I do suspect the damage has already been done. Oh well.

King the Land (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D+
Things look like they’re progressing on track for the classic episode 8 kiss, and I guess I’ll have to pretend the mountain arc did not just break the laws of physics since we were served with Junho aegyo? Anyway, the writer is trying to make us sympathise with the father and stepsister but yeah, anybody watching this at this stage isn’t caring about them one bit?

See You in My 19th Life (Episode 5-6) - Mood: C
If only the accident was truly an accident (inverting that Truck of Doom trope on its head) and there wasn’t any crazy hotel nonsense: we could’ve gotten much more fantasy world building and more interesting drama by now! The shaman would’ve been an interesting antagonist if the writer characterised him as some sort of fate-preserving deity but that’s not the case.

Heartbeat (Episode 3-4) - Mood: D+
Hmm, I accepted the random kiss because I guess things need to happen as a result of the cohabitation trope, but really, a romance is required to heat up the blood so that our protagonist can turn human? I also didn’t like the destiny of 2ML being a descendant of vampire hunters or that the cliffhanger with the 2FL doppelgänger means cliche drama will grace us soon.

Delightfully Deceitful (Episode 11-12) - Mood: D
It’s freaking hilarious how the writer has to force the 2nd leads into the story now, what with Yo Han’s job conveniently used to rescue Ringo while Jae In’s pretty much not doing her job anymore? The writer seems intent on making the president one who’s close to the main leads for drama but instead I’m feeling betrayed for Yoon Park who’s stuck in this bad role.

Also watched: Miraculous Brothers (Episode 3-4)

Currently Airing:
See You In My 19th Life: With the way Seo Ha's childhood trauma is framed, and with Ahn Bo Hyun's portrayal of his PTSD in the present, it's one of the most believable "drama traumas" I've seen. It feels completely emotionally logical, like "yep, makes perfect sense." It's indicative of the solid emotional logic that frames the rest of the drama, including the non-linear process of grief. I like that the FL is now struggling with how revealing her past life affects her loved ones, rather than only thinking about how it affects her. I adore Ahn Bo Hyun more with each ep - his smile during their dance; his quiet command during the loan sharks confrontation; the pleasantly veiled threat when he threw down the gauntlet to the icky hotel mistress! And then when he asked for a hug🥲❤️

King the Land: This drama is WILD. everything is so extra, including the episode lengths. The entire umbrella sequence and conversation in ep. 5 was funny to me (the umbrella save! tossing said umbrella aside! the umbrella metaphor! asking "is this about your love life?" - in case we didn't understand the metaphor! Lol). And then... that cliff dive! BUT, I continue to enjoy it. Junho being absolutely smitten and having absolutely no chill is delightful. He's trying to play a game he doesn't know the rules to... He's asking her questions to understand her, trying to do nice things, and saying the wrong things. "I'll give you my precious time" is one of my favorite line this week. Everything is so silly, but so swooooony. 🥰

HeartBeat: Yesssss this is 100% what I wanted.🧛‍♂️👍 If Taecyeon continues to swing between goofy physical comedy and suave superhero rescues, I'll be a happy camper. I kind of love that so far (before the love triangle/square kicks off), our vampire's nemesis is a jerky high schooler😂 I think the FL is a classic gothic heroine. Poor, with no connections, but instead of being a governess in a creepy mansion, she's a school nurse... with a dusty mansion. Love from beyond the grave and mist on the moors (oops - *Seoul streets*) completes the picture. Except I don't remember a Cat Man in any of the Bronte's works🤔 This drama really makes me laugh authentically, even in the little moments - like when the FL whacks Taecyeon in the face with her hair when she does a goodbye bow 😂 It's such fun!!

No longer being on vacation post-grad school/pre-job means I haven't gotten as far with my other (older) dramas and rewatches, but I'm still loving Dali and Cocky Prince. I love their chemistry, and that the ML is an honorable man of his word, who comforts the FL through words and actions. It's been a soothing rom-com watch for me! I'll probably finish it this next week.

I finished Summer Strike and I totally get why people were not happy with some parts of the show, especially of the alcoholic dad subplot in particular. I skipped through a lot of that though and I liked what the main leads had to offer and the journey they went on. Could we have done without the killer plot line - yes but I've just accepted that it's a kdrama staple now 😂

I'm now just watching Heartbeat , which I'm enjoying heaps, it's ticking all my favourite drama trope boxes, and When I Fly Towards You which I started after finishing Hidden Love and wanted more sweet love. Hidden Love OTP is one for the books - definitely in my top 10 - and the leads of WIFTY are lining up to do the same so far but this is also a solid nostalgic youth drama in general, I really like how all the characters are given room for development and aren't just there to fill in the space around the main leads! Would definitely recommend if anyone is looking for something to watch post Hidden Love.

King the land - needs a plot. If you would be kicked out of a hackathon for not having a problem to solve, why would I invest my time in you.

not interestested in 19th life. I dont care.

Heartbeat - chuckles, but it is mostly the execution that lags. Taec fits in here, though. also I would prefer if he was not heroic even once, just a doofus.

Devil judge - why imaginary Korea? be more bold. point out actual reality.
I need monsters. I need zombies.

I didn’t watch King The Land as soon as the new episodes came out, nor did I comment on the recaps. 😱 This is not good people. I will go pray on the altar of Junho for strength. My other much anticipated series, 19th Life is faring only a bit better. While I’m enjoying parts of it, at the half way mark, I’m already thinking what might have been.

It’s the dark horses that are winning my Live Watch. I like dissecting Revenant on the recaps, but when I’m in it, I’m in it. The hour just flies. And I can’t wait for the next episode. Heartbeat I never expected a low-rent campy vampire show to be such fun. It’s uneven, for sure, but when it’s good, it’s gold. If it’s a trope buster, I’ll be doing a little jig.

It makes me think if you go in with low expectations, you’re more likely to enjoy a show. That’s not all there’s to it, of course, but it helps.

Old Shows: Thank you for the tips to get thru the final angsty stretch of Love All Play . Instead of dropping, I skipped 4 episodes, read the recaps and watched the finale. I’m so glad I got to see CJH joyous smile again — and then again in 19th Life.

I plan on watching Unlock Your Boss, Into the Ring and Chief Kim among others recommended recently. And the fine folks on the Open Thread just gave me a whole bunch of dramas to watch so that I can experience shipping wars on the recaps. I've never experienced one in kdramas.

I just have to finish The Witcher first. I love all the drama pretty, but sometimes, you just want someone who grimes up good.

Heartbeat: I liked this past weeks drama more than the first week. I laughed out loud a lot. I love how they lean into the absurdity of what is happening.

Delightfully Deceitful: It is moving along. Haven't really learned much, but the comments in the recap were interesting.

Numbers: I say it every time, but Yeo Na exists as a prop for Ho Woo and it is tedious. As for his sister/friend suddenly developing a crush on him, all I could do was sigh and laugh. They have really made the women in this drama mostly useless, but here I am still watching. At least Ji Soo wasn't terrible. Also I wonder if her man is a child?

Revenant: Poor San Yeong. Does anyone else wonder why Hae Sang is so casual about the evil murdering spirit. He just lets her be, if I know there is some evil wandering spirit I would watch it like a hawk. Also was the assistant lying, San yeong's evil spirit obviously saw him.

King the Land: I wanted more from this drama, but I was hoping for too much, so I will settle for the couple of chuckles I get and vague disappointment.

19th Life: We are more than half way through, so the romance will ramp up and so will the warnings.

19th Life Still liking it. Didn’t except it to get emotional and serious so soon but I quite liked it. I like all the characters.

King the Land
I am still watching. Recaps are more fun than the drama itself.

Lies hidden in my garden
It’s one twist after another. It’s ending next week and hope it doesn’t disappoint.

Heartbeat
Show is fun!! and also liked the ending/twist in ep 4. I don’t care for the Joseon backstory.

Celebrity
I binged it recently. It wasn’t bad. Definitely shows the ugly side and cost of fame. But didn’t care for the ending.

Hidden Love
Lovely drama. Gets all the feels right. At ep 9 now and looking forward to the next set of episodes.
I really loved how they handled her first heart break. Beautifully portrayed. Also we are finally getting to know more about Jian Xu.

Fireworks on my heart Yang Yang and Vin Zhang bromance was great. YY in uniforms is looking great. Still struggling with OTP. but ep 10 did something that makes me see the FL a bit differently. Seeing this from her POV was good.

The way you shine (tw) enjoying this show as it progresses. It feels like a makjang plot but it also feels real. I especially liked how they’re handled abortion. Probably first time I am seeing this in a drama.

My apologies to Kdramas, but all my dramas are Cdramas right now.

Hidden Love
Hands down one of my favorite Cdramas ever. Was it flawless? No. Do I care? NO.

I definitely like the drama more than the novel. I appreciate that they toned down DJ’s dialogue. They kept him flirty and borderline shameless but changed certain scenes and dialogues that were awkwardly written in the novel (or maybe it just wasn’t translated well, I have no way to know). In any case, DJ was the stuff boyfriend fantasies are made of and I loved every minute he was on my screen. I seriously grinned like an idiot from start to finish of every single episode.

Here We Meet Again
Can I claim that I finished it if I FF through more than half of the drama?

Twilight
Pushed through to ep 9 then gave up because I loathed the so-called “brother” with the burning fire of a thousand suns.

Nothing But You
After the lovely review by TheFangirlVerdict I was even more eager to start this one, so I did. By ep 3 I was sold. I needed this after the disappointments of Flight To You and Here We Meet Again. OMG ep 15 when Song Sanchuan stops before their date to pump up his muscles then feels his pecs! 😂 😂 😂 Unlike FTY and HWMA, the non-romance portion of the story didn’t bore me and the only time I FF was during the half-sister’s early scenes because I found her annoying. But she grew on me once she started working at the tennis club. And I so much appreciate this drama giving us a couple being a couple, instead of one dramatic declaration and kiss and then they never touch each other again.

Fireworks of My Heart
Because YANG YANG and I’m shallow when it comes to him.

But okay, let’s be real. I’m studiously ignoring the fact that Vin Zhang’s acting makes YY’s stiffness more obvious. 😎 And I have no opinion on the FL just yet because in the novel, her character is pretty unlikable until more things come to light. Some of the fire scenes in ep 1 were OTT and I couldn’t take them seriously, especially when the FL - dressed in ALL WHITE - had nothing but a smudge on her forehead after tending to two victimes. 🤨 But then they had to give me cheeky, bad boy Yang Yang? I ‘bout had heart palpitations. I love angsty YY but cheeky YY is….probably more than my hormones can handle.

King the Land: Shameless enjoyment is how I would characterize this watch for me. That’s it. That’s the update.

See You In My 19th Life: I’m enjoying this overall, and certain parts are hitting correctly for me, but I’m also excited to get into more of the mechanics of this live-remembering-thing. The SML was my favorite this week

Heartbeat Our ML is delightful. I like him more the more I see of him, which I wasn’t necessarily expecting given how old-fashioned he could have been/is. Like him, I was touched when our FL stood up for him at the school, and I’m excited to see what his make-her-fall-in-love strategy is. Cat Man continues to be a legend.

The Uncanny Counter This is hitting all the right notes for me. I’m crying about once an episode, but not in a bad way, just because I’m so invested in everyones’ story and journey (and I can’t not cry when the grandparents cry). The action is also fun, and there is something really satisfying about watching our overpowered heroes not let a bunch of cruddy thugs push them around.

KING THE LAND - Every time I try to watch, end up falling asleep on my couch. But I like Junho, so I’m glad it doesn’t have the same effect on others and is doing well.

19th LIFE - This is the only show I wait for each week. However, I have a feeling things are about to take a dark turn and like @missvictrix, I have concerns.

NUMBERS - Didn’t think I’d like this show but it’s surprisingly interesting. I like the bromance they’re teeing up between L and CJH. And good to see Choi Min Soo again.

PAST LIVES movie - Finally went to see this a couple of weeks ago. It’s emotional, heartbreaking, and beautiful. Very Drama-y. That’s all I’m going to say so I don’t ruin it for others.

INDIANA JONES DIAL OF DESTINY- Against my better judgment, I let my bff talk me into this. I did not hate it, but I didn’t like it, either. It doesn’t have that Indy magic. And not trying to throw any shade at the geriatric crowd because I, too, am old (although not as old as @hacja!), but I don’t want to see my movie heroes age. I want to remember them in their prime.

More interested in Chinese dramas at the moment, with Begin Again occupying a similar spot to 19th Life in that group. I keep going back to it, but my attention drifts away quickly. Hidden Love was so enjoyable and sweet, and Longest Promise has me checking for new episodes every chance I get.

No internet for 4 days of last week, that was hard! Luckily, I have a couple of movie DVDs, so I watched The Suspect with Gong Yoo, The Clone = Seobok with Park Bo Gum and Gong Yoo and Rampant with Hyun Bin. All were good and Seobok was definitely my favorite, but after watching so many dramas, movies are just too short!
So, I didn’t get to watch King The Land or See You In My 19th Life, let alone pick up new dramas.
Instead, when I thought about what I wanted to watch first it surprisingly turned out to be Lies Hidden In My Garden. Maybe this is overambitious, it definitely is too short, but it is very tight and satisfying. Again, there were unforeseen turns in the story, and even if we are shown or told what people are doing, I’m not sure that’s the truth - yet. I see so many Hitchcock references: downing a laced drink, a passing train, black and white scenes with just a single color added, rain and fog, cut-off forms and people…
Next up was Delightfully Deceitful. What I enjoyed most here was Moon Ga Young’s guest role. She looked spectacular in Valentino, I liked that her role was queer and how she portrayed that, and when she talked flawless German, I was astounded – I had forgotten that she grew up in Karlsruhe like in her role 😉 (Usually, the German spoken in Kdramas is so bad that I as a German have a hard time trying to understand it…)
Before internet loss I had watched
Revenant
At the end of Ep.3 I had real chills from a smiling Kim Tae Ri, the acting is great here – not exaggerated, but so convincing. There is no gore or jump scares, but it is chilling nevertheless. Again and again, we see that it is people who are evil, and ghosts just take advantage. Special mention for the possessed fish…
I still like Durian’s Affair a lot. What a great way to introduce a lot of drama by putting two women from the past into the glitzy present and confronting them with the lookalikes of their past relationships but set up in a different way. The husband and the lover are now brothers, the evil mother-in-law is still there, the beloved son and husband is single, and so on. The makjang is not overwhelming yet, so I’ll keep watching. Special mention here: fish out of water humor, ghost lookalikes, and meta references about the waist long hair (“They must be playing in a drama that’s filmed nearby – but no, their hair is real!”) and the fruit durian.
KDrama friend project:
Just started with the first two episodes of Heartbeat and love it, of course 😉. Not much progress with BLs, either…

Because Hyun Bin in that white hanbok/warrior suit? Gurrrl.

On to episode 16 of Mr. Queen. Still 5 more episodes to go, but I am not complaining. This drama continues to be a gem.

I kind of disliked Kim Jung-hyun as an actor (because of his cold treatment to his partner in a drama before) so I was relieved when I thought during the early episodes that he would not be the main male lead. So I was surprised with myself when I would get all squee-ful on his romantic scenes with Shin Hye-sun in the latter episodes. The good story did it for sure, but I have to acknowledge that KJK contributes to it (and of course SHS).

I just finished Celebrity. It had me from episode 1. It was more than just entertaining and fancy. It has a story - one that is relevant and resonating. Glad they made it only 12 episodes. I think it was just right.

P.S. The cameo at the end was a delight. Shame I was not alerted on a spoiler on that. Would have been more impactful to me with the element of surprise.

SEE YOU IN MY 19th LIFE: Finally caught up with the 6th episode. There are differences between the webtoon and the drama. I liked introduction of Ae-gyeong but am on the fence with other new characters. The bonding between the sisters is the best part both in the drama and webtoon.
FRUITS BASKET: Love the characters and the fact that the anime pays attention to the story arc of each character. The episodes dealing with bullying caught me raw as it reminded me of my friend’s daughter. Bonus- I can discuss the anime with my niece.

Celebrity - the scene stealer in this entire drama was Kang Min-hyuk. I was literally holding my breath waiting for him to appear on screen and this drama without him would have been meh. Please get this man a leading role stat.

King the Land - wanted a light rom com and this does the job. I don't understand why it has 16 episodes as the ML is already all in and the FL is getting invested now 6 episodes in. If the writers are looking to do some tortured unnecessary separation I will be fast forwarding/skipping episodes. I have said it repeatedly and I will say it again…please drop the formulaic 16 episode format. Just focus on telling a good tight story and if that is only 8 episodes the viewers will be happy.

Big Bet. I loved this show. I grew fond of Mu-sik but not surprised how he ended up, ironic that it was Jung-pal who did it. Loved the last frame where he shows up. Sorry to say that Son Suk-ku's character was not necessary. You can cut out the character, leave the Filipino cops and it still works.

Beef, non-Korean. My favorite show for the year. Must go and see more of Ali Wong.

Broker, movie. I love vague endings. It calls for a discussion or more thinking. I'd like to think that was Sang-hyeon in the van, with the hanging picture frame. It's a given that Dong-soo and Hae-Jin are invited to the park. And So-young was on her way. Nice take on the so called "family" trip.

Moreover, with that said, the US movie “Major League” is one of my all-time favorites. My extended family quotes from it all the time. So, it is also in the shadow of this—very similar plotted—film that Stove League rests…and it doesn’t fare well in comparison.

They are two very different shows so you are better off dropping Hot stove if it’s not a good fit and watching Good manager instead to see if that is. He has two distinct styles of acting which were both shown in One dollar lawyer. I like both styles and think he is a very good actor.

4

@reply1988 It’s interesting that you say NGM is different in Stove League and Good Manager—and I get where you’re coming from. In the former he’s staid, and in the latter he’s a clown.

However, compared to say, The Veil, I’d say that they’re actually quite similar in terms of his catalog. Both characters are always one-step-ahead. Both characters are more interested in their own life goals than in romance. Both characters undergo a transformation, but at the midpoint of the drama, after which the main action really picks up its emotional punch. And perhaps most importantly for my comparison’s sake, at the end of both dramas, NGM’s character, well, I’m mindful of spoilers. Let’s just say, I find deep parallels in the way he is treated by his colleagues in his final scenes and in the way his character then responds to them!

HEARTBEAT: I initially did not have high hopes for this show and thought it would be a likely drop. But this week, it was the one I looked forward to the most. Everything about it is utterly charming: Taec's over-the-top expressions (favorite one: his reaction to FL's hair getting in his face), I love that mansion (especially now that it's clean), and they totally got me with the cliffhanger at the airport. This is one of those shows where it feels like everyone involved is having fun, both in front of and behind the camera. Obviously, I don't know if that's actually true, but who cares? It makes me happy.

KING THE LAND: This was the week this show completely won me over. Naysayers declare that it's vapid, predictable, too tropey, and silly, and they are 100% correct. Some also say any appeal it has is due to Junho. That's meant as a dismissive statement, but to me, it gives him too little credit (and I say this as someone who sometimes feels he's a tad overrated). It takes a lot of talent and good humor about one's self to pull off a (thin, cliched) role like this. Yoo-Nah is doing great as well. Whether or not they're really a couple I don't know, but they certainly have on-screen chemistry strong enough to make nearly every moment they're together feel like romcom bliss to me. Favorite scenes this week: the acquisition and demise of the carp. I also continue to love the boss/secretary and friend group, but Da-eul's husband better not be cheating!

19TH LIFE: There is a bittersweet quality to this show that I find immersive and addictive. At the same time, I expect it to end happily. I hope that faith is not misplaced! This week, I continued to be charmed by the second lead's burgeoning romance (even if one of their scenes was in a Subway), and perplexed by how long Seon-ha can sit and brood at the bottom of pools. Unlike others, I like the little mystery--that scene where a seeming stranger calls Ji-eum by her name got me. I'm worried about the uncle, though!

DELIGHTFULLY DECEITFUL: When I watch this show, I generally feel that it is well done, but I've fallen behind nonetheless. The problem may be the platform on which I'm watching--I wish it was available elsewhere. I find the hints at romance to be believable (these two characters have spent enough time getting closer under intense circumstances for me to buy it); at the same time, it feels awkward. And I continue to love Yoon Park's character, even if he's a bit of a tool.

JOSEON ATTORNEY - I found the writing disappointing. I am not fond of episodic storytelling (case of the week), and the humor did not fit right. The cast was very good though. Besides WDH, I also liked the actor who played Young Master Yu. The actress playing the sister would have made a great princess.

JUMONG - let the surprise attacks with flaming arrows begin!

19th LIFE - lovely scenes between characters, but not much of a story.

Ok, so it seems I'm the only one who is not watching anything currently on air (as usual XD).

I'm watching:

_ C-drama "My love, enlighten me" (17 out of 24). I'm hooked because of the OTP, who have lots of chemistry. I love every moment when they are together, sometimes they seem a real couple.
I like the lightening, cinematography and art direction in this show too.

_ "School 2017". I've just started it, I have not watched all the first episode yet, but... I have met Kang Min-hyuk here (a little cameo, it seems). He is such a cutie.

Finished:

_ "Shooting Stars". What a nice drama. So many likeable people and funny moments. Maybe there is a subplot I find totally unnecessary and a little dragging, but... the rest is enjoyable.

I never watch airing dramas, so, no, you are not alone.

I loved SHOOTING STAR except for every ridiculous attempt at scandal/trauma/assault at the male lead. All those subplots were badly done and so clearly ripped from another show. But everything else was like a totally different show and lovely.

Celebrity This show was addicting that I binge watched it a few days. It has everything that I like in a drama - underdog story, murder mystery, revenge, chaebol takedown, enemies to lovers and fashion. I think the story would resonate better of it had a more tragic ending. That almost tragic end for one particular character was such a copout to redeem that person. Despite that it was still an entertaining watch.
Revenant I got into this drama a couple of weeks late but despite the dark theme. I like this. I occassionally watch ghost themed dramas so I guess its my quota for the year. I always like police procedurals so it will be interesting how the two policemen will resolve the suicide cases.
Heartbeat my current favorite. Taec is good in this. I didnt know I needed a vampire comedy. Taec and Won Ji An has good rapport. I am not sure yet what the deal is with the reincarnation part of the story especially with the doppelganger joining the scene. I am here for it. I hope this show will continue to be good.
Delightfully Deceitful i am pleasantly surprised by Moon Ga Young's cameo. She and Chun Woo Hee has good chemistry. I feel bad that she didnt have enough scenes with Kim Dong Wook.
Lies Hidden In My Garden New revelation this week. I shouldve suspected his involvement but I was too focused on the husband. I am here for the final two episodes to see how the story will play out.
Happiness Batttle I am annoyed with Jang MiHo. She shouldnt be running around confronting suspects alone. With a murderer at large who has enough resources to cover his/her tracks, I am surprised that MiHo is unharmed. I wanted her to be badass since she is played by Lee El. I am disappointed but still watching.

Heartbeat It's really fun when the leads are together. Otherwise, I'm not interested in the others characters.

Delightfully Deceitful I hope the identity of the President will be more interesting than the killer in The Perfect Stranger.

King the Land That's when they want to flesh out the ML character.

Numbers I didn't watch the last episode.

See You in My 19th Life I like the 4 characters!

Cdrama :
Hidden Love and I Fly Toward to You The same writer wrote the novel but they were adapted by different crews. I didn't specially like Hidden Love. I liked the FL when she was young, she was spunky. But after, she used this cute voice and was very shy making the difference of age bigger. I didn't really understand why suddenly the ML was attracted by her. The story was too focused on them.
I loved the second one. The FL was cute but not too much and ML was totally "she fell first but he fell harder" type. I liked the story didn't forget to develop their friends too.

TW drama :
The Way You Shine it's kinda an old school drama. But I like the main characters.

I saw Sang Zhi differently (in Hidden Love). At college, she may have appeared meek, but she was actually the opposite (just had her own style): she was able to talk back, tease Duan Jiaxu about his age, go through difficult times at work, deal with the stalker... and strongly defend Duan Jiaxu against her own family.

(She also chose her university NOT because of DJ (although originally he did was the reason) and she was not only interested in her studies, but participated in the uni competition as well. It just wasn't the focus of this story.)

Like I said, they focused too much in the couple. The competition or her studies were connected to him. The only time we saw her in a class room, it's because he came to see her. We knew nothing about the competition except 2 scenes but tadaa he was the one telling her name and it wasn't a surprise she won... But these moments were peanuts in the 25 episodes. In work, they gave her a very very general idea that wasn't developped at all.
She was a little princess with her brother, parents and boyfriend and I missed the young version.

I'm usually only attracted to Kdramas, but because of a recommendation somewhere here, I binged and loved the Jdrama FULL TIME WIFE ESCAPIST recently. So when The ATLANTIC magazine mentioned how good the Japanese reality show LOVE VILLAGE was, I cautiously approached. Wow. Older adults, 35-60, mostly 40's. As an oldster myself, I related, but it surprised me by the sincerity, humor, and serious approach to finding a "final partner." It was my first and probably last reality show. If you haven't seen it, give it a try! And if you have, I'd really like to hear your take.

Finished CELEBRITY. The most memorable scene for me was the friend admitting to be a hater online, at first just to let off steam, but then she could not stop posting hateful stuff, because she became addicted to all the likes she received. So sad, but I guess true for many of these posts. The screeching Gabin club was worth the FF button.

The twists in LIES HIDDEN IN MY GARDEN keep coming and I expect more to come. It will be difficult for these two women to get the better of Jae-hon.

Ji-Eum is getting too impatient and causing trouble in her 19TH LIFE. Somebody seems to be monitoring her actions and I wonder what they are planning to do to her. Ideally she will loose her ability to remember her past lives, but at what cost?

HEARTBEAT is just the right comedy between the darker dramas. The leads' bickering is fine, because our vampire is not resentful, but really a lovable innocent. The twist in the cliff-hanger was very good!

Add violence and crime to NUMBERS and you have a drama. Numbers alone are just too boring?

Loved Moon Ga-young's cameo in DELIGHTFULLY DECEITFUL and was impressed with her excellent language skills.

Only watched ep 1 of MIRACULOUS BROTHERS which was not as impressive as the cast suggested. I might give it another chance.

I don't find the ghosts in REVENANT scary, but I am still very much behind.

I am watching a show with my kdrama discussion group that would normally not be on my watchlist, Girls Generation 1979 but its very interesting. In real life 1979, I was twenty, so I find this show a little more depressing than nostalgic. I was totally unaware of the level of stifling sexism being experienced by young women at the time. Of course, my excuse would be that I'd scarcely had a date, let alone a girlfriend. if I'd had, I would have been extremely supportive and fought the patriarchy by her side, and not at all been wheedling for a kiss.

Recently I believe the kdrama gods are trying to tell me something about my youthful years. Not only am I viewing a grim picture of 1979, in My Perfect Stranger, 1987, the year the leads traveled back to stop a serial killer of intelligent women, is the year I was married. In Revenant, 1958, the year the evil spirit haunting Kim Tae-ri was created, is the year I was conceived.

If next year there's a kdrama about an incompetent teacher retiring in 2023 and wasting a lot of time doing completely unproductive things around the house, then its time to put on my tinfoil hat.

See you in my 19th life
So relieved that the other people remembering their past lives do not seem to be the sinister creatures I first took them for. I really like the drama overall, but the chemistry between the OTP is a bit meh, so I am rooting for the SL-couple, which is much more interesting.
Also, it never ceases to amaze me that when any of the protagonists has to drive somewhere, they leave in bright daylight and arrive in pitch black darkness. I know Seoul is a big city, but it must be humongous to warrant such drive times.🤣🤣

Heartbeat Man, this is so full of tropes, but so entertaining at the same time. And - as other beanies have already stated - Taecyeon wins the gif-game - big time. I really like Won Ji An in her first main role, she is doing a great job.

Mrs Durian's affair I did not at all expect to like this, but I am so drawn in now that the weekend cannot come fast enough. There is no clue as to where this story is heading, but it is an intruiging watch with way more mystery than the super-ultra-mega-boring "Lies Hidden in my garden" (which I dropped).

See you in my 19th life: Ji-eum and Cho-won reuniting was everything! The week's episodes got a bit darker and heavier - like literally too with so many scenes taking place at night. The two hours still go by way too quickly since the characters and mood are intriguing.

Delightfully Deceitful: Finally a win for Team Jeokmok! Also one less character to deal with since I feel like the drama has too many characters, who don't seem to stand out. I'm happy to find myself still anticipating the upcoming episodes!

The Real has Come I'm a week behind. I'm a tired of Taekyung's mom getting so worked up over over the Let's-Coparent-Couple. I'm happy to see Taekyung anticipating the baby and getting curious about the baby, like any dad would.

Joy of Life Cdrama. Up to ep 7. Loved the whole poetry competition (I enjoy literary competitions in historicals in general) and can't wait for Fan Xian to finally find his Miss Drumstrick.

Not the most exciting week - almost all shows I've been watching went the routes I really wish they didn't, damn. *sigh*

SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE: Looks like drama decided the source material lacked a proper dose of kdrama angst, so now we have a mysterious illness caused by FL accidentally breaking karmic rules or whatever... Meh. I though it was a melodramatic romance about second chances in life and love, no? Why it's starting to smell doom suddenly? If this is indeed going the tragedy and forced moving on route I'm bailing, sorry. Way too overfed with this crap lately.

HEARTBEAT: Another offender, tho for completely different reason - I really, really cannot stand the way FL is written here. It's been a while since I've last seen such an old school dirt poor - but with a heart of gold, of course! - ungrateful, trash mannered, annoying screechy kind of kdrama leading lady. Her - and show's in general - obsession with money could've put ABBA to shame, which doesn't improve my overall impression at all. Fantasy romcom about a vampire boy and human girl? More like social commentary on SK's alarming poverty rate! Even poor vampire ML got robbed - by his best friends no less! - and has to work as a sexy janitor to make ends meet... Ok, that was funny, but everything else - not so much.

DESTINED: Yet another romance show that decided to go hard on other, non-romantic genres lately... See the pattern, right? Here it's court politics - the worst kind, really. I'm a little behind this one, which seems to be blessing in disguise so I won't be left hanging for days in the middle of upcoming last stretch drama. At least OTP finally got together for real, it's been a long overdue. And ofc now everyone and their royal moms want to spoil that... I'm starting to lose any hope for a satisfying romance in dramaland these days.

REVENANT: The only - haha! - bright spot in this rant, probably due to the fact that there is no romance in the show whatsoever. And it better stay like that (don't like the only possible pairing here at all). We've gotten some answers and even more questions, and it's all exciting and darkly fun... sans the fact that main mystery seems to become too messy. What EXACTLY happened with that poor kid back then? First we've been tricked to think she was killed by a shaman for black magic profit and now we've been given a completely different culprit and motive, wtf? I don't mind either explanation, but stick to the one, drama! Or at least dismiss the previous theory properly first. There's possibly some crazy twist to it, but I'm not the biggest fan of "fool the viewer" mystery writing. Let's see how it all untangles...

I picked up My Perfect Stranger mainly because Kim Dong-Wook made a strong impression on me in the grisly The Guest. So I was looking forward to more of his stoic charisma and hearing his lovely voice. However, I have mixed feelings about My Perfect Stranger, and it's hard to even articulate what's off. It's beautifully shot, the backgrounds, the location, the house he lives in is gorgeous. The screenplay and story is mostly solid too. But from the very beginning, something felt off about the way the story began. I wanted more time to get to know Kim Dong-Wook's life before the action began. They jumped into the story too soon, I feel. They made light of the miracle of time travel, like it was no big deal that a time traveling taxi just turned up suddenly. I didn't jive with that. I also started to get impatient and annoyed with both the leads' inability to keep me interested. The director is terribly fond of lingering shots on the leads' faces, except that the leads don't have many expressions. So what happened was I ended up fast-forwarding the dramas because the close up shots of their faces became excruciating. I also had beef with their hair styling and outfits, which I felt were exceptionally boring. By the end, while I enjoyed the story and the location shots, I was starting to dread all the scenes involving the leads. The female lead was still acting like a high school student or college student (even though in real life she's mid-30's) and the male lead had these bland expressions that drove me crazy. I think he works better visually in action-packed dramas. Please do not cast Kim Dong-Wook in any slice of life dramas involving lingering shots. It's just not his thing. As you can see, I am full of petty complaints and criticisms about My Perfect Stranger, but it is what it is. By the end, I just stopped caring about this strange duo. I do not buy their romance. I can why the female lead would fall in love with the male lead, but not vice-versa. He was a full-grown man and she was stuck in cute college student mode. It took all of my willpower to finish this drama because the acting from the leads became more and more irritating. However, the acting and casting from the supporting cast was top-notch and amazing. So I would recommend this drama, for the story and the supporting cast, and if you have higher tolerance than me for less than perfect acting from main leads.

I think most folks in the live watch agreed the FL’s friendship with her mother and her parents story were the emotional highlights of the show.
But they main OTP, yeah, they flubbed it. I quite liked KWD’s character in YAMS but here he just fell flat. And even the FL’s declaration came out of nowhere. So not having a proper buildup and squeezing in the romance didn’t help either.

I'm rewatching Star's Lover. In addition to being a throwback to Winter Sonata female and male leads, it has some really interesting points about the integrity of ghostwriting. I'd never really been bothered by the concept before, but it's interesting that the ML is so adamantly against it on principle. While I can understand his perspective, I'm a behind-the-scenes type of person, so I'd much rather get the proceeds from my writing than be the star of the narrative. As utilitarian as it sounds, money always wins over fame in my book.

Finding love on that ghostwriting journey, on the other hand, is one thing I can get behind. YJT would definitely be the poor Mr.Darcy in this Jane Austen like scenario, but what a handsome and admirable Mr. Darcy he is, and well-acted. Given his usual slick roles, he did a fab job being the awkward intellectual trying to stay true to his principles. CJW has always been a fave of mine since Winter Sonata, and her opposite characterization role in this one as the polished but baggage-filled star oddly suits her. It'd have been more interesting if the trip were set in a classically romantic city like Paris or Venice, but I'm sure there were production budget restrictions for that.

I'm still rewatching old Kdramas for the time being after hopping through several first episodes of recent ones that just screamed "tired tropes, plots, and themes." Hoping to find a gem soon in upcoming lineups.

This is spectacular. I've liked about 75% of the list, and either not watched others or weren't as big of a fan. Did you ever see Sandglass, a pre-2000 one? I've heard great things about it but have never found it available anywhere on a streaming service. I'm less about liking old ones as much as finding new ones to be not to my taste.

2

I have only watched six dramas from that list and one of them is my Top 3 (Flower Boy Next Door). And some others are on my Plan to watch list.
I have so many things to see! I'm happy, but it's overwhelming too.

4

@wheguhreh I watched half of Sandglass back when it was available on DramaFever, but I was fairly early in my drama watching days then and it felt like I was missing important historical context needed for parts of it to really land. Also, the print quality was pretty bad, so some of it was quite literally hard to see, which didn't help matters. If it ever shows up legally again, I'd like to give it another try though, now that I have more knowledge about the time period.

4

Thank you ❤️ there are a few I have not heard of before.

3

@wonhwa I do miss Dramafever for instances like these Kdramas. I don't mind bad video quality but it drives me crazy when I have to rely on torrent sites to watch.

5

King the Land: Not my cup of tea, not a fan of main leads to suffer through it, I wonder why the female lead was not fired for using bathroom of the occupied hotel room, her story should have just ended there, lol
Revenant: I love Kim Tae Ri, also fan of her kind of beauty, classic, black straight hair, and I think I mostly like her choice of dramas to act in, plus I am glad the actor who plays the professor is getting a cool role, he deserves it, he has been acting forever in dramas and movies, nice seeing him being a lead
Heartbeat : I find the female lead so annoying, too much shouting, honestly, only in dramas men fall in love with women who only do shouting all the time, irl they tend to keep away from them, but in dramas they always bound by some situation that keeps them together, she is lucky Tae is such a sweet vampire with absolutely angelic patience and with strong mental health, nothing can annoy him, haha, tbh, I believe that’s how he is in real life , very calm and always keeps his emotions in check, absolutely my kind of man

My wife and I just love watching I’ll SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE. That show is so much deeper than it at first seems. In its themes it reminds me of GOBLIN.

We have also been enjoying KING THE LAND.

This last week I took time to watch a romcom that I started two years ago and then simply dropped because there were too many other things to watch. LUCK ROMANCE is actually a pretty good, watchable show.

My wife found the Fantasy drama CARNIVAL ROW on Prime and really liked it, although she does note that it is a fairly dark story.

I finished the Chinese romcom SWEET TEETH- it was a very pleasant watch that could have been shorter. Of course, you can say that about all C-drama romcoms- some are so drawn out that at some point you simply get too tired and stop.

Last week things took a dramatic turn for our leads and the Chairman made it worse- with the full results to be seen tonight. The direction of their story now has to change. The dangerous game that was being played by TK’s older sister and her husband has blown up and they two must now figure out where they are going. But the story of Macknae and the Young Father advanced to the point that they have admitted to each other that they have feelings for each other.

I am also fully caught up on the daily APPLE OF MY EYE.

Didn’t post last week, so here’s what I’ve been up to the past two weeks.

FINISHED:

Familiar Wife - I found it uneven and a bit overlong, especially the last couple of episodes. Some interesting plot twists and strong performances, particularly Ji Sung’s. Enjoyed it overall.

Call It Love - A real gem. Gorgeous, evocative, creative production design and cinematography. Great character development and ensemble cast. The weak ending was the only real disappointment.

IN PROGRESS:

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3
I’m stuck at episode 10, waiting for HULU to roll out all the remaining episodes before I finish watching.

Six Flying Dragons 22/50
Hooray! Thanks to a fellow Beanie, I am able to watch this show via VIKI Europe. (Though I’ve had to play whack-a-mole with the VPN servers in order to keep from getting shut out.) So much has happened already, and I’m less than halfway through! Totally engrossed so far, though I’m hoping the later episodes will give our younger dragons more screen time.

I read Matthew Salesses’ novel, The Sense of Wonder, about a Korean-American pro basketball player whose career is hobbled due to (surprise!) racism. The other protagonist is a Korean-American tv producer who wants to create an “American K-drama.” The book is a perceptive, inventive depiction of how Asian-Americans navigate their way through America’s celebrity culture. Though I felt the characters weren’t fully fleshed out as individuals, it was a great read overall. Best of all (for me) are the chapters in which the tv producer explains K-drama tropes and conventions, and lays out the scenario of her proposed basketball-themed K-Drama—which I wish somebody would actually produce!

‘ Best of all (for me) are the chapters in which the tv producer explains K-drama tropes and conventions, and lays out the scenario of her proposed basketball-themed K-Drama—which I wish somebody would actually produce!’👈🏾 I agree I really enjoyed the book and even if they just made the book as it is into a drama it would be great. There is the drama they were filming about the Shaman story sounded fascinating. The politics around the crew and negotiating with the US company about the drama she wanted to make, the story of her and her boyfriend, his journalist friend and the star basketball player. It was all playing as a drama to me especially because I was listening to it as an audiobook.

Thanks for the book tip @babylilo, I will seek it out. Interesting that while following the Women's World Cup I learned about Casey Yujin Phair, a 16 year old USA born forward, named to the South Korea national team. She is referred to as "Half-Korean" in both the Korea Times and Yonhap News as her mother is Korean and her dad American. The team coach says he intentionally shielded her from the media during the team's three week training camp. I wish her luck navigating the sport celebrity culture on a huge international stage. Hwaiting!

We finished Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 and I guess too much deities do not guarantee a good drama when the plot goes in too many directions.
Hidden love on the other hand has no plot, but loads and loads of cuteness.
I also put my brain on pause for Numbers whose music is more stressful than for a thriller (but has a comedy effect on me).
At least it is not as repetitive as One spring night and it's seemingly unique OST song.
See you in my 19th life has a plot, a few revelations and still lot of mysteries.

I can't understand anything about the Soma Tech case on Numbers and rely on the dramatic music to give me a clue as to whether our heroes are winning or losing. I also just can't take it seriously and it makes me laugh multiple times per episode, but taken as parody, it's pretty fun.

Finished:

1. Waikiki 1: Brilliant. So funny. Had so many lol moments. Some might not find the humor to their liking, but it sold itself to me at the end of ep1. I had a great time watching this one almost everyday in the past week. The cast are brilliant together. They looked like they enjoyed their time together which made the show even more enjoyable. A real K comedy. Lee Yi-kyung and Kim Jung-hyun stole the show, though I’m particularly more fond of the former’s acting and antics.

Watching:

1. The Real has Come: Netflix here only released 10 eps, so we are much behind the rest of the world on this. I enjoy the show so far, but sometimes the lies grate on my nerves.

The scene Dong-ju asked Junki if he had kissed his sister and what Junki did had me in stitches.

I agree. By far this is the K comedy that gave me most laughs..

I have only watched episode 1 of Waikiki. The scenes with Park Sung-woong were hilarious. It had me in stitches.

It was comedy gold. So I can’t blame Love To Hate You if they copied it. Anyone else noticed that?

The PSW scenes are ones of the bests. I think I laughed so much watching those scenes (and hence the decision to continue watching the show).

Waikiki- one of the best true comedies to grace Kdrama screens. PEGASUS MARKET is another.

On THE REAL HAS COME- the lies are supposed to grate on your nerves or you will not get the full dramatic effect.

Only watching SYIM19L and KTL as well as recap-following TRHC.

Haven’t started this week’s KTL but wow wow, the ending of SYIM19L Ep 7 is such a game changer uplifting the whole drama narrative - hope the rest will fulfill its thematic promise. To those who have read the webtoon, is it a new creation for the drama?

I still don't understand how last year I could have missed Never Grow Old, a beautiful and nostalgic Chinese youth drama. Ren Min is a delightful actress.

I'm enjoying King The Land: Yet another demonstration of the fact that it is enough to give up revenge, betrayal, immorality, misandry and nihilism to have a show that is pleasant and appreciated by the people.

*Wimbledon* : my favourites are not playing, rooting for Alcaraz and Rune
*King the Land* : after Zverev's loss I was preety sad and started watching 7th ep. For an hour my facial muscles fixed to same position i.e, G. Couldn't stop smiling ear to ear.
19th life : soon after King, I watched 7th ep of 19th past midnight
Miraculous brothers : started and completed 4 episodes in 1 go
Numbers , Revenant already watched latest released

Will watch :
Hidden Love : loving more n more
When I Fly towards you : started today, Sunday morning, already loving it.

Snow Eagle Lord & Destined
When a snail falls in love (2023) : just started. It's Thai version. Will see, it's worthwhile or not.
And will watch the original chinese version of this drama again this week. I have already watched When a snail falls in love Chinese drama twice.

Will watch K2 (missing JCW very much) and Kill me, Heal me
( don't know how many times I rewatched these 2 series)

Dropped:
Fireworks of my heart : watched and dropped for time being. Because I just finished 'A date with the future' and not in a mood for same kind right now. I started only for Yang Yang, but story and pace not appealing enough. Yang Yang as a school boy is entertaining

I'm a fan of both the webtoon and this series. So far, I'm okay with the changes the show has made, though I'm withholding judgment until the end. Given the preview for the next episode, it looks like the series is still keeping key elements of the original story, which is reassuring, because those elements are quite memorable.

It’s good to see you back in the comments after a break. Some of us are giving out awards for things that we want to recognise on the site. I want to give you a 🫘Beansprout🌱 for the best on brand name tag. I looked up the link on your fan wall.

Have you seen Girl’s Generation 1979 and Dance Sport Girls? We are watching both for the Watch and Discuss Korean drama club this month, some of the dad’s in these dramas leave much to be desired but there are positive male advocates across the age range and in the teaching profession representing too.

This past week I have been traveling so fell behind a bit on everything.

Ongoing:

Heartbeat: I am loving it. Goofy and nonsensical, I love that it is so unpretentious in its premise. The situations created are as real as the vampire themselves. What Taec lacks in acting department, he more than makes it up with his non stop infectious energy. The SML is is cute and with the twist that came up, things are interesting now. FL - I started with adoring her, but her screaming fits are starting to get to me a bit. She needs to tone down a little. Also, she has a perfectly good job. Why is she so poor? Or is she just a miser? I am not getting that part. Also, their conversations need to start being about something else other than money. But over all, this is still my favorite out of the lot.

King the land: Sigh! I am still sailing this ship, but somehow it's like following a luxury cruise liner with a tug boat. I know it looks beautiful, over the top and luxurious, and I am still tailing behind. I love the leads' (b)romance, but it's not as romantic as I hoped (I think I can't shake off my dislike of the FL). Judging by the snippets in the Instagram the current episode feature the ridiculous OTT jealousy bouts by the male lead (similar to Soundtrack, the only thing that looked totally out of place and unconvincing), a trope that I find quite distasteful. Hopefully I am wrong.

Hidden Love: I love it but it has started to plateau for me. I love the brother and this is one of the best sibling relationship I have seen in an Asian drama. They are super cute. However, Zhao Lusi's particular brand of infantile dialouge delivery is distasteful. Other than that, this show is one for the keeps, though I think 4 episodes shorter would have worked wonders.
