Revenant: Episodes 3-4
by quirkycase
Our unlikely pair is roped in by more murders and ghostly shenanigans that might just shed light on their own ghost predicament. With no telling how long our heroine can maintain control, they dive headlong into their supernatural investigation. Their quest for answers leads them to the past and a tragic event with far-reaching consequences.
EPISODES 3-4
We open on a young man scribbling furiously while hyperventilating and repeating, “Die!” as one does. Heels clack down the hall. There’s a loud knock on the door. He opens it (uh oh), and we see a pair of red high heels. The young man falls to the ground, seeming to choke.
He’s merely one of several students to die recently. There have been three suicides in the past week, all seniors at the same university. Rumors around campus say that each death was preceded by the sound of high heels and knocking.
Mun-chun and Hong-sae investigate and discover all three students had a friend in common, a student named Tae-young who suspiciously disappeared after the deaths. CCTV footage from the apartment buildings show a woman wearing red high heels (so not a ghost, it would seem) that the landlord identifies as Tae-young. Oddly, she visited each of the three students weekly on a regular schedule. However, she doesn’t appear on any of the neighborhood CCTV footage outside the buildings.
Coincidentally (or maybe not), these deaths happened in the area that used to be Jangjin-ri, the place Hae-sang and San-young discovered in Gang-mo’s notes. They make a trip there and start canvassing the elderly residents, trying to find someone who’s been there long enough to help them. They luck out and find an elderly man who tells them about the sacred tree on their makeshift map. It’s known as Dukdali Tree after the old practice of childhood burial; children were typically either buried in jars in remote areas without a headstone or their bodies were hung from trees (yeesh). The tree was also known as the Suicide Tree after many people hung themselves there.
The elderly man also knew Gang-mo who used to visit his younger brother who has since died. He gives Hae-sang and San-young his great-niece’s address, so they make a trip to her dorm… just as the high-heeled woman/ghost visits. The woman/ghost disappears, but they do run into Mun-chun and Hong-sae. After Hae-sang sees a ghost tree with three corpses and an empty noose, he warns Mun-chun there will be another victim.
For Hae-sang, it’s obvious they should now chase after this suicide ghost, but San-young has a life outside of ghost hunting. One that she’s had to put on hold to focus on ridding herself of the evil spirit that’s attached itself to her. San-young couldn’t take the exam she’d been preparing for with Se-mi and has been avoiding her mom since she can’t tell her what’s going on.
Her mom further adds to her stress after she gets a call from the police about San-young’s grandmother’s death. San-young calms her down by saying she wasn’t involved with her grandmother, but then it’s San-young’s turn to panic. Her mom says her grandmother left her an inheritance, and given their money troubles, she encourages San-young to accept it. San-young freaks out when she then clearly hears the voice of the ghost possessing her order, “Accept it.”
While Hae-sang focuses on identifying and locating the Dukdali Tree, San-young tries to find Tae-young, hoping for answers about her own possession. No one has been able to reach her, and one of her coworkers seems way too interested, especially when San-young mentions Tae-young’s family. He asks for her great-uncle’s contact info, supposedly to send Tae-young’s things she left behind, and San-young hands the address over with way too little suspicion.
Things take an odder turn when the man then introduces San-young to his boss after overhearing her on a phone call with her landlady. The boss offers to help her with money. Thankfully, San-young is suspicious of that and leaves without taking him up on it. He sends her away with a fish (even as the owner of an aquarium shop, that’s just bizarre) and encourages her to return.
Everyone’s investigations lead to the same place – Tae-young’s family’s property. Hae-sang determines Tae-young is the ghost’s next target, while the police learn from the great-aunt that Tae-young went into hiding because debt collectors were after her. When San-young returns to the aquarium shop, she finds debt collection contracts and discovers it’s a front for an illegal loan shark business. On her way out, she sees a reflection of the Dukdali Tree in her mirror. (Tae-young threw pieces of a torn family photo with a ghost inside, according to Hae-sang, in an aquarium to keep the moneylenders from coming after her family.)
The boss catches San-young on her way out, but San-young somehow escapes and calls Hae-sang to check on Tae-young’s family. Hae-sang is already there, and a scream leads him to the shed where one of the moneylenders, dressed in a woman’s outfit and red high heels, attacks Tae-young. Everyone, including the police, arrive just in time to arrest the man and save Tae-young. So it seems the deaths were a human-ghost collaboration (even if unintentional) with the moneylenders terrorizing students a suicide ghost then latched onto.
But it’s not over yet. Hae-sang learns that the moneylenders gave a fish to each of the victims, with San-young being the most recent fish-receiver. This might be one time the possession comes in handy because Hae-sang finds San-young on the bridge unaffected, tossing the fishbowl into the river.
Not San-young turns to him with a chilling smile and greets him, “It’s been a long time.” Hae-sang rattles the ghost when he shows her the hair accessory and recalls it was gifted to young girls as a talisman for health and safety. As the ghost retreats, San-young repeats the numbers “21” and “176.” Then, San-young returns to herself, frightened and confused. She’s been getting worse, feeling less like herself and having more blackouts. Hae-sang tries to comfort her, but the situation is bleak.
At least one of their problems is an easy fix (if you’re rich, that is) – Hae-sang lends San-young the money she needs to keep their house, although he vastly misjudges how poor they are and gifts her 45 million won too much, ha. She’s reluctant to accept, but he tells her their weaknesses can be targeted by ghosts: she needs to pay her debts, while he gets rid of all his alcohol.
They next investigate the numbers the ghost repeated, starting at Gang-mo’s office. Their search yields nada; however, San-young does find out something interesting in the room her parents used to share at her grandmother’s place. There, she spots an old calendar with a due date for a baby… when she was already five years old. Once again, it looks like her mom’s keeping family secrets.
Tae-young provides them with a clue, at least, when she recounts a visit between Gang-mo and her grandfather the previous year. He’d been asking after Lee Mok-dan, a village girl who went missing in 1958. And yes, it’s the same girl with the hair accessory who was killed by the shaman. After painstakingly going through old newspaper articles, San-young and Hae-sang find an article about Mok-dan being killed as part of a yeommae ritual which, in its most gruesome form, was done by starving and killing a child to create a vengeful juvenile ghost. That’s when San-young realizes the numbers are page numbers in her father’s book on this topic.
Since Baekchagol Village is mentioned on those pages, they take another road trip. The elders are happy to see Hae-sang again – he did research there years ago – but awkward Hae-sang is happy to let San-young steer the conversation and make small talk with the villagers. And here San-young unearths yet another of her mother’s lies: Baekchagol is her hometown, not Seoul as she’d always claimed.
There’s no time to dwell on familial revelations, though, since wandering ghosts crash the party. After elder dies suddenly, Hae-sang and San-young work to protect the others. The village is known for its straw doll festival that’s meant to ward off these wandering ghosts, but someone sabotaged it this year.
An elderly, ghost-seeing resident couldn’t bear to send off her daughter who is now a wandering ghost, so she burned all the straw dolls that could’ve protected the village. San-young manages to save one elderly woman who is pushed in front of a Truck of Doom by a ghost, but then she’s followed by several wandering ghosts. We end as San-young sees her ghost father in the reflection of a store window.
Since these wandering ghosts don’t seem capable of conversation, I don’t expect San-young will be able to get much out of her father. But it would certainly be helpful if he could nudge her in the right direction or provide some info on why she’s involved in all this. Between his abandonment and her mother’s lies and bad decisions, poor San-young has really had to fend for herself. It’s not great when the only person you can trust is a ghost-obsessed stranger you just met.
I do wish we spent less time with the police investigation since I find that the least interesting aspect of the drama. Dramaland is overflowing with criminal investigations, so I’d much rather spend the time on the ghostly bits. We did confirm this week that our ghost is that little girl who was tragically murdered (when in doubt, it’s always a little girl ghost). Now that they know the ghost’s identity, maybe they’ll be able to make some headway on what she wants and how to get rid of her.

Watching this is like reading a mystery novel with clues dropping in perfect timing so we, the viewer, don't feel like too stupid to follow the plot or the characters don't act like they are too smart to be catched up. And how they merge the case series format to the continuous plot line flawlessly is just good, I don't feel the transition jarring. I love this. (Just forget Jiri san, Kim Eun-hee might be in temporary hiking mood when she wrote that).

I agree. Its smart writing for writernim to do so.
I forgot the Jirisan drama already. It never happened. Its a name of a mountain in SK and that is all.

@pohonphee, I haven't watched Jiri san. But I know Signal (and absolutely LOVE the intelligence of the writing - even though I can recognise the inspiration from Frequency, the final result has definitely surpassed the original inspo).
Can I take that Jiri san is best to be avoided?

Thank you @quirkycase for the rapid recap!
I am in love with the plot. But I also have so many open questions — which, I'm sure, is normal so early in the story.
I remember suggesting that the evil spirit uses the host body as a means to an end, whether the host provides them the energy to kill or the network to choose their next victim from. We were also clearly shown in the first 2 episodes the spirit in San-young's bedroom mirror lifting from her body in her shape, while she was still sleeping on the desk. So, my understanding at the time was that the spirit can reproduce the image of someone else's body, down to the fingerprints. We somehow still saw San-young sleeping on her desk, so I imagined there would have been 2 San-youngs during the times the spirit was actively "suiciding" different victims.
Now, comes the start of episode 4, and the spirit waits until she meets Hae-sang on the bridge to give him her most creepy smile and cryptic clue before disappearing and leaving a very confused San-young in her place. Now this is interesting because we were truly left to believe that the spirit can copy any shape they want while the real body is elsewhere...
This leaves me just as confused as San-young, who dutifully proceeded to spend the next day blurting out a series of numbers. Girl, use your phone to make a note of it! Also, regarding numbers, as an avid escape room player (I don't believe in having a social life, so any free time I get I pay people to lock me in a room) the first thought that popped into my mind was: Page numbers! Obviously, neither of the two protagonists is an escape room adept so it took them unnecessarily long to figure it out. Aside from the slow realisation of what those numbers could have been, I'd like to comment on the following:
How self-aware is that spirit that she went on to even read about her own origin story? How did the spirit get to read the book? Is there a ghost library we don't know about?
I am also intrigued by the ghost's relationship with San-young. While there may be elements of being vengeful and killing out of spite or to protect her own identity (I strongly suspect the spirit took Gang-mo because he was getting closer to finding who she was) , she is also invested enough in her own host to want to protect her. She intentionally went back to the fish shop to terrorise the owner (or so it looks to me).
This brings me to my next point: Did Dad ever intended to give San-young the hair accessory or was it the ghost using her powers to possess Grandma’ s image and reach San-young? And here comes my following point (it's a never ending drawer-opening mind game, each thought opens a new drawer of options): If Dad wanted San-young to have the hair accessory, was it because he thought she could stop the spirit, and in which case, how is it linked to the spirit? (did her maternal side of the family kill that girl back in...

... (did her maternal side of the family kill that girl back in 1958?) If Dad never wanted San-young to have the accessory, then how did he know the ghost would latch on his daughter? This would reinforce the connection between the Gu family and the ghost, or between Mom's family and the ghost.
Also, anyone else want to reach through the screen, grab Mom by the shoulders, shake her violently, and shout at her face until she stops being a pain? She is one consistently annoying character through the lies (an army of those, and it is becoming increasingly worrying because she doesn't seem to have any social connection at all like someone who desperately tried to cut ties with her past), through her constant need to be parented by her own daughter (hello, you're the parent in the relationship), through her utter refusal to discuss anything about Gang-mo (again, as a parent, you can't make the decision for your child to erase the other parent). She may be holding the key to some mysteries of the story, and I am all for stealing that key and slapping her in the face in the process. If we could at least slap her a little until she reveals more about baby number 2 and why she left Dad, that’d be fantastic…
Finally, this is only episode 4 and we have been given a potential name for everyone’s favourite creepy suicide ghost, Lee Mok-dan. Is the ghost Mok-dan? This is so early in the story that it would seem odd to already reveal her name. Unless she wants to be found out because she’s hiding a much bigger and much more interesting secret and we will need all the remaining episodes to uncover it? She was keen on burning her hair accessory in front of young Hae-sang, so wanting to be found out would seem strange. But then Hae-sang’s mom knew about it, dug up the accessory and then proceeded to scare and scar her son for the rest of life (yes, he let the ghost in, but his mom’s random actions and change of mood had already started to terrorise him by that point)

So many good questions and theories. It didn't occur to me that the ghost could reproduce a physical body down to the fingerprints, unlike other ghosts it seems.
It feels like the show is doling out puzzle pieces from different times and characters. If it's a good show, it'll provide the remaining puzzle pieces and have them fit neatly.

i genuinely think ghost wants an out and she is not getting that because a 3rd party is somehow controlling and restraining it in this world.. question is who is the 3rd party and i would offer our ML"s rich grandmother and their origins.
Pretty sure shaman was used to create these/this ghost.. ghost does rich family's bidding.. by passing it on to people who will kill the people rich family wants killed.. something like that
Ghost is strong.. so it is reasonable that no ghost would want to hurt its host and yet the ghost did abandon its host - ML's mom and killed her (by posessing ML)

I've read that this particular ritual was mostly used this way: shaman visits places and orders ghost to curse locals into plague/epidemic illness, then "miraculously" cures poor folks from it - for a nice fee ofc. Perfect scheme, I must say.

Oh interesting. @kafiyah-bello I didn't consider this could be the the ghost of the shaman. I thought it was the ghost of the little girl, potentially Lee Mok-dan, because of the hair in her shadow and the connection with the hair accessory. But, fair point, it could be the shaman craving punishment or redemption in the afterlife, perhaps...

It might be. But it might be a red herring as it feels rather early on in the show to know the girl and her name (which the prof keeps telling us is his goal). And, if the ghost is giving the clue (book numbers) to find the girl maybe it's a trick. Shaman is a good guess if so.

I found the 3rd episode a bit confusing and not as engaging. But I forgave it in the end. I was thinking to myself, ha, they forgot to show how the FL got away from the loan shark. Gotcha. And a few minutes later, such a delicious, disconcerting explanation. Well played. I also liked the village interlude, such interesting customs (and reality of an urbanizing, aging population).
I agree the policemen's investigation isn't as exciting in these two episodes, but I sure am intrigued by the connection between the FL and the young policeman. I know this ain't no Happinness, nor do I want it to be, but I hope they explore it more.
Who is the loved one the prof lost and keeps close? It'll be interesting to see how the FL sees that student ghost. Probably in all his awful ghostliness unlike the prof (just as the old village woman saw her daughter).

I completely agree. I think the police investigation serves a different purpose.
Mun-chun has already made it clear that, not only he is open to the idea of ghosts, but he also understands that the key to ghost hunting may reside in old records. I see him as a bridge connecting the official and unofficial investigations.
Hong-sae appears to be someone who, while he doesn't show any interest in paranormal activities, has learned the ability to be open-minded enough to not jump to conclusions. In another drama and in the hands of another writer, the police would have arrested San-young multiple times already. He seems to be more curious about her than suspicious of her.
So, I too hope our four investigators will get to meet and cooperate more openly towards the end.
On a complete different note, what's the deal with Hae-sang's assistant? I briefly wondered if he was a ghost because he always wears the same very noticeable outfit.

We've all been speculating he's a ghost. And when the prof said seeing ghosts wasn't always bad as you get to see loved ones, it made me wonder if the student is someone he cared for and lost. (Or it could be the show signaling the FL will see her father a bit later in the episode as did the old village women.)

The plot for episode 3 felt a bit convoluted to me. The Dukdali tree haunting was super cool, but then the haunted(?) photograph got eaten by the fish(??) which then started haunting their debt-ridden new owners(???) who only got the fish because of a truly bizarre 'gift' from their illegal loansharks? wild. It was interesting that the evil spirit didn't end up killing the loanshark though. Was she just toying with him or was there some reason she wasn't able to force him to commit suicide?
I also have to agree there were some odd character moments. Quirkycase already mentioned how San-young just handed over Tae-young's family info, but also it struck me as a little odd later that Hae-sang so easily brushed off San-young's worries about not feeling like herself and blacking out at the loanshark's (before recognizing the haunted fish scenario and rushing to find her possessed on the bridge).
The poking and complaining is because I'm really enjoying this one though! The acting is fantastic and there's just the right amount of creepy for me. I can't wait to get some answers for the huge pile of family secrets introduced this week

I wasn't too sure what the Dukdali Tree plot was about. At the end of ep 4, I suspect that the tree story was merely designed to reveal more about Gang-mo's investigation one-year ago and show us that the spirit is actively protecting San-young from harm at the fish shop. So, my theory is that it is one strong spirit that is stronger than the Dukdali Tree spirit and that seems to have a vested interest in San-young for some reason.

Yeah I think you're right. Which, the idea that San-young is protected by virtue of already being possessed could go some interesting places! I wonder if we'll ever get much of a team-up given how much baggage there is between San-young & Hae-sang and the spirit but there's certainly evidence that San-young's spirit isn't above helping them when it suits her (still somewhat unclear) motives. I think I just was maybe so interested in the concept of a tree so steeped in negative emotions that it became an evil ghost in and of itself, that I was a little disappointed where we ended up going lol

If nine tailed story is something to go by, kids starved and killed become ghosts who can be beckoned to do someone's bidding.. and the way to get rid of the ghost is to take its name
I do think there is a 3rd party that is somehow controlling that ghost stays in this world and does their bidding.. i would say our ML's grandmother and whatever shady history is there
ghost by itself might not be too keen on staying in this world hence her provoking ML to find out her name

I never finished Tale of the Nine Tailed but I think you're on to something with Hae-sang's grandmother. At the very least, she seems the most likely to have introduced Hae-sang's mom to the hair accessory that hosted the spirit.
It's hard to tell if that's what the ghost wants though. Why burn the research and kill the two people who seem to know the most if she wanted someone to find her name? Is that why you think someone is controlling the ghost? I wonder how they would accomplish that completely remotely?

i just think major twist in this series can follow only two paths -
1. Either the ghost's identity leaves people shocked
2. Or, the whole perspective of the ghost being evil is thwarted and becomes the shock factor

The thing that confuses me is.. apparently ghost was in mom or ML as a kid and was doing her / his bidding.. she tried to get rid of the ribbon and was killed.. clearly neither she herself or her son wanted her dead.. so did ghost develop its own desire to kill? Is there a reset happens everytime she gets into a new body? she has to kill to grow enough to have her own desires?
FL doesn't have the ribbon , yet is possessed..
so i just think easier explanation is that control is working in some other way with the constraint that ghost must fulfill desires of host body.. afterall, someone wanted FL's dad dead (who?? if not the 3rd party who is benefitting by using this ghost)

Knowing someone's true name gives you power over them - that's like occultism 101, basics of basics. Supposedly works both ways - to curse and to cure/exorcise... That's why most ancient cultures were into multi-naming, nicknames and other roundabout ways to keep such things as a secret only shared with really trusted people - or no one at all in some cases.

I'm confused about the spirits intentions too! It caused the death of the scammer who took SY's money but not the loan shark? Why?
Does it only choose to kill those who was the cause of its death, was researching about it and got too close to the truth (SY's dad) or touched/messed around with the haunted hairpiece (Hae-seong's mom)?
Hoping they would clear it up in the upcoming eps

Another set of episodes well done. Never boring at all. When ep 4 ended , I was surprised that it was the end already, I was not watching the clock at all. To think that it was also almost an hour long. No fillers, no slow mo walks. Even the close up face shots, usually a bit too long in most shows, was just perfect to watch the play of emotions in the actors' eyes. I had to replay the moment when FL shifted from possessed to herself - superbly acted.
The plot is also unfolded well, and I agree that the police investigation and the leads' investigation will eventually collide and make sense - the same way they arrived almost at the same time at the grandpa's place in time to save the college student.
There seems to be a bigger secret with the Mom's family.

Aah, we watched it on Disney+ at North America. They didn't show it on the same platform in US? Weird 🧐

Also the running joke of Hae-sang only listening to purification rituals is so funny. It made me laugh this morning as I was trying to get my aux cord working in the car

After 4 episodes I'm almost 100% positive there are actually two ghosts in there - sacrificed girl AND shaman who killed her. Hell, at this point I'm not even sure we can call this entity possessing SY a normal ghost - it's way too powerful and atypical for that. Let's go with a demon for now. And as for demon's goal - maybe answer lies in the (English, since Korean one simply means vague evil spirit) title? Revenant means the one that returns... or wants to. What if it wants a body - to not only possess but fully own? SY coming from murdered girl's bloodline certainly isn't a coincidence. This very well may be a reason why her dad married her mom in the first place... That dark hint about SY's younger sibling (lemme guess - she was supposed to have a sister?), eventual (can the mom start talking? I'm so fed up with this woman and her ostrich attitude) family fallout and schemes to make SY accept some shady inheritance make an interesting puzzle. Our supernatural villain is playing long and complex game here. Gu family was certainly in it - either willingly/consciously or not - and HS's one possibly too. It's sus to me that his surname Yeom is also a part of the name for yeommae curse... Given that, his mom owning (?) cursed daenggi and his convenient spiritual powers he probably is related to that shaman. What a reunion if true!
Fish loan sharks case was bwahaha, so insane it's awesome))) Actually not, writer-nim, pls, stahp, we're trying to be serious here! Don't see much point in cops duo too yet - at least in the younger one. Wtf is the script trying to achieve with him in relation to SY? Odd friendship? Awkward dusty crush? Whatever it is, it doesn't work for me, so let's not. Sunbae helps with exposition/investigation (and we love KWH), so he can stay.
Best parts were definitely folklore bits, even tho some of them (child burial, ugh) made me feel sick. Yeah, I wonder why the poor tree started to have bad vibes and attract hangers after all that dead babies on its branches disrespect... Straw dolls ritual sounded cool tho, too bad we probably won't see leads performing it since dolls are gone. Or not? Either way, that grandma is so selfish - if she wants to risk her own neck to reunite with her dead daughter, fine, but why dragging others along? Misery SO loves company in this show!

As usual, Tae-ri & Jung-se are doing a great job at their roles!
I love how the viewers are somewhat a part of the investigations as we are just as clueless as San-yeong & Hae-sung as they go about their quest for answers. My only gripe is the scare factor for now is really tamed. Not much is really scaring me, just some uncomfortable moments with the dark themes.
Also anyone else super afraid whenever Hae-sung tells San-yeong important pieces of information related to the spirit because you know the spirit is right there and could possibly use that against them??
My toxic trait while watching this series though is that I keep relying on the evil spirit to "protect" San-yeong whenever I feel like shes going to be in danger. With thoughts like "ah the spirit will help her" or "Oh she has the spirit" - the scene in the village when she looks up at the mirror and sees all the wandering spirits, I was thinking. "cant they see the ghost within her too?"
Aside from that, this show is really intriguing and I'm excited to see how it'll end
