Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (June 3, 2023)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

Currently covering: Race

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: Episode 7 was just about the best thing I’ve watched all year, and while I know that’s not saying much since it’s been kind of a bum year for dramas thus far, this drama really and truly is exceeding my expectations every week. Great character moments and even greater characters make this so much fun. One of the few dramas where I don’t mind the expanding universe/storyline/seasons.

DaebakGrits

Currently covering: Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938

Doctor Cha: I love this drama, but I’m so afraid I’m going to hate the finale. I don’t want Jung-sook to get sick again because it’s very obvious that In-ho will offer up his liver on the condition she won’t divorce him, and that pisses me off so much. Even if it gets resolved in a way that appeases me, I don’t want to spend my last two episodes with these characters frustrated that a precious chunk of time is dedicated to more of In-ho’s awful (but often comically dumb) behavior. As much as I want my ship to sail, I’d be fine if nothing happens between her and Dr. Dreamboat! Just give me two episodes of Jung-sook living her best life!

Oh! Young-shim: It’s cute, but this is not the Love is for Suckers do-over I was hoping for.

My Perfect Stranger: On paper, this should be the drama I look forward to each week. Time travel, romance, murder mystery, two of my favorite actors — all elements that should put it at the top of my priority list. And yet, this is the drama that I come to after I’ve caught up on everything else. Not sure why this is the case because I can’t point to anything that annoys me or puts me off. Maybe it’s a pacing issue? In that it moves slowly and doesn’t quite leave me hanging in suspense, wanting more? I’m wondering if this would be a drama that I’m better off pausing and then bingeing when it’s complete.

The Good Bad Mother: Episode 11 was a snoozefest, but episode 12 got back on track. Sam-shik took 12 episodes to become interesting, but better late than never? Where can I find the spinoff to this drama where we just watch Kang-ho, Mi-joo, and the twins be an adorable family and they all have therapy so they don’t pass on their generational trauma? I don’t even love slice-of-lifes, but I would watch that.

Sh**ting Stars: *Spoilers* I guess I understand where people were coming from when they didn’t like the heavier plot lines, but they didn’t really bother me at all. They were foreshadowed and felt like a part of living as a celebrity or supporting a celebrity, which is what this show is all about. Plus they didn’t cause our couples to break up, which is enough to make me forgive much greater wrongs than that. Nothing could dampen my excitement watching all the ships sail off into the sunset at the end, and I couldn’t stop myself from bursting into laughter at every adorable moment and holding my breath at every swoony scene. I’m putting it down as one of my favorite romcoms ever. The last episode took me forever to watch because I kept rewinding to watch things again. *happy sigh*

So glad to hear you enjoyed Sh**ting Stars!! I'm still only on ep. 7, but I'm aware of the heavier plots that pop up later on... part of the reason I'm watching SO slowly is because I enjoy it SO much and don't want it to end!

I started Sh**ting stars thinking we would have a few episodes of them sparring and a slow conversion to romance but the ML seemed smitten by her right off the bat. Little disappointed and put a pin on it for now.

The shoelaces! 🤣 And he has no one to blame but himself.

I would have loved a spinoff mini web series about the ML and the lawyer. Just encounters in the elevator, the staircase, the office corridor, and the kitchen, over and over - something like The Boy Next Door.

I am watching FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE right now, and while I am enjoying it for its own sake it is making me itch to re-watch SH**TING STARS. I agree with you that it is one of the better romcoms. Dramas where you fall for and then care for every character are rare and this is one of them for me.

Sh**ting Stars is one of the best things that happened in Kdramaland. So pure. It has many iconic scenes, one of which is the scene when two best friends looked at each other and understood one another without having to say a word. Fantastic acting.

Yes, considering how sad that whole incident was they handled it so well that it was watchable and we could notice things like that. They were there as humans connecting first and then interacting as dictated by their job roles second.

I just finished watching Sh**ting Stars for the first time. I don't think I've ever watched a drama where I liked so many of the supporting cast, and felt just as invested in them as I did the main couple.

Not a lot on my drama plate right now. Feels like I'm just biding my time till June 17th…

ONGOING
Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 - I haven't seen Kim So-yeon in much before and I totally get the hype now. She's magnetic and so good at expressions and tonal shifts.

My Perfect Stranger - The torture scenes were difficult to watch. Lee Won-jung did a really good job in them though. I hope things have changed permanently for the better for Hee-seob in this timeline.

The Good Bad Mother - Hope Kang-ho works together with Mi-joo to bring down our evil duo. Maybe with some help from the Lettuce Boys whose conscience is clearly acting up.

STARTED
Delightfully Deceitful - Not a fan of the fourth wall breaks or the big-bad being some shady, cult-y 'foundation' again. I think the show would be more interesting if she did kill her parents 🤷‍♀️.

C-DRAMAS
Planning to try Where Dreams Begin for Xiao Zhan.

I was planning to catch up with Kim Sabu... but I got distracted by jdrama Ousama ni Sasagu Kusuriyubi and went through first 4 episodes. So far I quite like it, though one has to be aware that this is a manga adaptation and thus manga lenses are necessary. 😉

Dr Cha
The show is getting a biiiit makjangish... but I still like it. There is still enough heart (Mom's letter to Seunghee) and humour (of course a handbag is better! 😄).
It is a shame that Seunghee is so fixated on her dream of family life with Inho, because without that obsession she is an awesome woman.

Real
I finally got the confession. 😊
Step Hyung with his wife are giving me such contradicting emotions, one moment I feel for them (and love their relationship)... and another moment they are sooo annoying!
I'm also not sure how I feel about Step Noona and her husband, the show sort of introduced new potential partners for them. Will they really just co-parent or will they still find a way back to each other? Either of the options can be good... or not.

The Good Bad Mother (Episode 11-12) - Mood: C-
Not the poor pigs for the 3rd time! But now the show is knocking on finale’s door, everything is rushed from minuscule stuff, like the trot singer’s sudden departure, to the big revelations, like that Hospital Room of Truth. And we still have so much to cover next week with the revenge, death, parentage, lettuces, even the masked villager’s face reveal? At this point we pray.

Delightfully Deceitful (Episode 1-2) - Mood: C-
It’s double the Kim Dong Wook! Well, I’m certainly not complaining. But while I’m intrigued by both our leads (I’m of the opinion that Moo Young is actually playing Ro Um, more than she thinks) as well as our probation officer (he might also be involved in the childhood story?), the whole story seems to be your classic evil corporation and child experiments. Yawn!

My Perfect Stranger (Episode 9-10) - Mood: C-
Nah, that was a stupid cliffhanger: there’s no point trying to get the audience to speculate on who Hae Joon’s mom is since anyone else could’ve been wearing the pink hairband too? I’m worried that the show continues to ignore the elephant in the room that is the car or even time travel in general while pushing a frankly unneeded romance between the leads. We’ll see?

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 (Episode 7-8) - Mood: C-
So we went from the question of why Yeon killed Moo Young’s brother to why said brother was trying to kill Moo Young: nice narrative question to ponder upon, just way too late, given that there’s still the ultimate question of who the resurrector is. I honestly find the Japanese general a waste of time, not only that, not-Yu Ri’s character was basically sacrificed for his arc.

Doctor Cha (Episode 13-14) - Mood: D+
Doctor Cha’s mother has the terminal illness trope in the penultimate week while she herself has an organ rejection trope in the finale week: it just makes me laugh at the absurdity of it all. Well, at least Roy isn’t related to Cha: that would’ve been a bigger annoyance. His decision in the preview to donate his liver means he’s flipping his finger at his “family”: good for him!

Happiness Battle (Episode 1-2) - Mood: D
Honestly, I couldn’t really tell you if there’s a significant difference between this show and Green Mothers’ Club. On the other hand, it’s not like I wasn’t expecting 5 brilliant actresses to be wasted in a makjang story again: there’s just about nothing else to watch mid-week. Lee El being confirmed as not the murderer is disappointing but I’m not surprised.

Oh! Young-shim (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D-
What’s worse than a 2FL who’s determined to screw the OTP over? That’s right, assassinating the 2ML character as well! It baffles me as to why the writer ever thought that was a good idea but oh well, even the OTP hasn’t hashed out their issues.

Finished:

The Oath of Love (C-drama): The drama threw in half a dozen problems after the leads became a couple, without leaving enough space or time for satisfying development or resolution :( It’s kind of a blessing though because I was REALLY in love with his show and if that the last leg hadn’t plateaued, I would’ve had a hard time letting go. This way, I’m still satisfied (because happy ending, lots of cute moments still etc.) but not hung up over it.

Love Between Fairy and Devil (C-drama): I have a new found appreciation for the costume, styling and set details this rewatch! I really, REALLY, want to own some (who am I kidding, ALL) of the pieces in DFQC’s wardrobe! They were exquisite and the best I’ve seen in any show so far ✨

My Lethal Man (C-drama): this one hit the spot for ‘cheesy and overdramatic beautiful rich people romance-revenge plot’. It opened with our ML - tall, handsome, brooding - in a stylish three piece speaking in Italian, which made me go ‘…Vincenzo? Is that you?’.

Watching:

Race (8/12): Really nice slice of life watch! I am now team ‘not Jaemin’ because imo, the plot has gone to a point of no return with that whole bit. And if they were to try and back flip, it’d feel unsatisfactory and unfair to Yoonjo. I get the feeling though, after the end of ep.8, that we may be headed for the 11th hour character backflip potentially (and unfortunately).

Good Bad Mother (12/14): Feels I’ve got one eye 👁️ on this show hahahah I’m not really watching but just fast forwarding to see just the things I want to see (the twins).

Tale of the Nine Tailed 2 (3/12): “I’ll wait till it finishes airing” she said. “I don’t have a fear of missing out” she also said. As per usual, she has not even one ounce of willpower and the ep 7/8 recap for this show was the final straw. I’ve jumped in and trying to see if I can catch up and at least watch the finale on air with everyone else. LEE RANG, I’M RUNNING TO YOU!

Back from The Brink (C-drama, 30/I still don’t know how many there are in total): My fickle heart has jumped back onto Team ML so the whole SLS issue has abated…for now. I am starting to wonder just how many back and forth ‘dying for u’ plot lines we’re going to have (like literally, dying for you/in place of you/to save you/dying just because plot device), but then again this is the bread & butter of the genre.

To Ship Someone(C-drama, on air) I’ve added another to my on air roster! The premise for this is so interesting, the FL (ever the optimist only believes in happy endings) gets transported to the world of a popular story, along with the ML (eternal cynic, writes only tragic endings) who is the author of the story and they’ve got to navigate their way through and rewrite the story to save themselves from a sad ending. I really like the way this one has been shot and the plot reminds me a little of Extraordinary You (which...

(which I LOVED) so hoping it stays strong!

Immortal Samsara (C-drama, 4/61): It’s another BIG one (61 episodes). I’m getting so used to watching big dramas that 24 episode dramas seem “small”, even when they’re one hour episodes 💀 This one has Cheng Yi as the ML and it’s going to take a while for my brain to disassociate his face with Crystal Yuan yelling ‘SIFENG’ on loop (thanks Love & Redemption 😂)

The Untamed (C-drama): I’m trying to tame the anticipation, because the online hype has been real and I don’t want to be disappointed if the drama doesn’t meet whatever ridiculous high bar I’ve set in my head. BUT honestly, with Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan in the same screen, I’d happily watch this muted even.

Meteor Garden (C-drama, 2/50): I BARELY got through Boys Over Flowers and I’d say I did it for LMH but it was more like I finished it in spite of his hair cut and the rest of the ‘plot’. I’ve heard the C-drama version is the good kind of trash though and also it has Dylan Wang (in a not shit hair style) 🥰 This will be the perfect ‘turn brain off during commute home from work’ watch.

@Dorotka Same here! I was a teen when the taiwanese Meteor Garden was released and it was huge at the time so maybe that's why it stuck with me more. I wasn't able to get my hands on most of the episodes, but I got my hands on the OST and posters since I was a fan of the manga at the time. F4 filled the asian boy band void I didn't know I had until I got into kpop.

I know it's old but Barbie Hsu will always embody the essence of Shancai to me. I love the way she speaks, firm and clear and natural. She has a lovely persuasive and charming way of speaking that convinces you she is Shancai, strong and responsible and just. She was a true heroine.

Also, while I know everyone's experience is different, The Untamed not only met my expectations, it smashed through them and ended up well beyond what I ever expected a Mainland Chinese show (or any show, really) to do. I agree! It's a funny observation, but I'm enjoying how fun it is, and the lack of like a really solid 'no gaps' plot contributes to that. Someone in the comments compared it to watching anime adventure, and I thought that was a great comparison!

I compared it to anime last week for the first 10 episodes, especially with how they depict the monsters/spirits - horse-head man (from the arena episodes), that monster that was being enslaved by a bad guy but turned into a cute little baby monster after it was released, gold-eating spirit, etc. And omg, those cute elf spirits too. I think it got a little bit less anime-ish as it went on (I'm on ep 24 now), but I'm still enjoying it. It helps that the characters are fun/interesting to watch and it's well-cast.

It is fun to watch! Honestly, the rest of the show could just be the 3 main leads going on adventure after adventure and I'd keep watching. I also like that the show doesn't take us down the side plot path too often or too long, and keeps the focus on the main characters.

My Perfect Stranger: I continue to really enjoy this drama. Yoon Young realizing what happened with her father while also still not being able to touch him for the damage he caused her was so sad. However, knowing and understanding his history is important. As for who Hae Joon's mother is, I think it is the lady at the tea shop and I also think she is part of the murders too. We keep catching glimpses of her and we already know she lied about seeing the guy in the blue cap. She has seemed suspicious from the beginning.

Delightfully Deceitful: It has not been a great set up for this drama. The is she or isn't she a psychopath story has been done and not well before and it is not doing well now. Kdrama writers have yet to commit to writing a true psychopath. Everything she has done was for a legitimate reason. Hopefully moving forward, they stop the 4th wall break and the rest of the character and team intros aren't so abrupt. We get it you have to take down the big bad, sigh.

The Good Bad Mother: Young Soo is still terrible and Mi Joo is still wonderful. I am curious though what is going to happen when the twins find out Kang Ho is there dad, the heartbreak for my poor poor Ye Jin and anger from Se Jin will be interesting.

Kim Sa Bu: I am calling shenanigans again. The hospital and Dr. Insu were negligent in that boys death. The fact that it was accidental tragedy, doesn't negate the negligence. Where were the nurses? Dr. Insu isn't fully responsible, but he does have part of the blame. Is the councilwoman doing too much, yes, but she did lose her child, and doctors should be punished for negligence, just like anyone. There careers shouldn't be destroyed, but they should face some penalty, just like anyone else.

Race: Race up several flights of stairs when the girl you don't like asks you to meet her. Okay, sir, lol.

GOOD BAD MOTHER (Ep 11-12)
Show can I just have Mi-joo?
Kang-ho doesn’t deserve her, and I…
probably don’t either but at least I won’t leave her hanging

TALE OF THE NINE TAILED & TALE OF THE NINE TAILED 1938 (Ep 1-5)
So I watched the first episode of the sequel and while it’s my kind of chaotic, I felt I was missing some key bits of info and world-building. Yes I could’ve read the recaps, buuuut I didn’t want to miss out on cocky Kim Bum yanno? Anyway I’m currently watching one episode of S1 and one episode of S2 and so on and so forth.

I vastly prefer S2 tho, cause of my queen Kim So-yeon. She is FANTASTIC and I’m in LOVE!
Screw Yeon.
Hong-joo is my GOD and I fully worship her! Gahhh she looks so STUNNING, but I also love her character, she’s so darn charismatic. Okay fine I’m shallow but she’s serving up those incredible looks to mere peasant folk like me, so how can I not worship her?!

Gushing aside, I think my favourite scene so far was between Mu-young and Eun-ho. Ask a lady to lie inside a coffin and talk about each other's traumas. That’s top tier seduction right there, Mu-young you playboy you…

Seriously tho, I want more scenes between them. They’ve got some sizzling chemistry

WESTERN SHOWS:
I don’t normally talk about western TV (unless it’s amazing). With its multi season format I sometimes forget that I’m watching a show until whatever streaming service reminds me the new season is out. Anyway this past week there were finales to some series I’ve been watching.

SUCCESSION
I’m not the biggest fan of this show, I watched it mainly for my sister. While I like the fact the rich aren’t being seen as something to idolise, sometimes I wonder why I kept watching rich powerful assholes being rich powerful assholes. I would definitely like to scrape ‘Boar On The Floor’ from my memory thanks.

Still the finale got me, I remember reading a comment saying the siblings were brought up in such a way they can’t see the other ‘win’. Or when Roman said the were NOTHING, which was the only wise thing that came out of his mouth tbh. Anyway I thought the ending was depressingly realistic and can’t really feel bad for the siblings when they get BILLIONS out of this deal so…

TED LASSO
This was pure fluff and I loved most of it. It was my happy place and that’s a feat considering I don’t care about football or any other sport actually.

MARVELLOUS MRS. MAISEL
I liked the finale. Midge & Susie were the heart of the show and seeing them banter over the phone and watch Jeopardy together was the perfect way to end the series imo.

My lack of enthusiasm on the series as a whole is very subjective on my part, I guess I found it hard to watch considering I didn’t like any character, which I guess is the whole point of the show. But I’m glad you like it, same with my sister she absolutely loved it!

My Perfect Stranger - Sadly, dropped after ep. 8. Since I knew this drama would skirt the line of what I can handle with suspense/thriller/violence elements, I've been spoilering myself by watching KBS clips on YouTube and reading comments on MDL. The commentary for ep. 9 about the Baek brothers was the tipping point for me. I know this is an important part of Korean history, but the tragic violence is too much for me. I'm disappointed, because I've really liked the ML, FL, family themes, tone, and music. Maybe at some point I'll come back to it with a heavy hand on the FF button.

While I'm waiting for the four June drama premiers I'm excited for (!!!), I'm working on finishing up others on my list. Delighting in the humor and sparky chemistry of Sh**ting Stars; luxuriating in the languid pace and emotional depth of Call it Love.

Too Cool to Kill -- Movie on Viki. An action comedy that pays homage to old Hollywood. A bit-part actor is hired to play the role of a hitman ("Karl") in order to fool a mob boss. BUT, the actor thinks he's playing the role for a movie - without cameras or a script! ("Freestyling," lol). Absurd humor, heart, and a happy ending. Some of the funniest scenes I've seen in ANY movie, including some excellent "internal monologues" and a hilarious Mandarin/Italian interpretation negotiation scene. Highly recommend! 10/10! After I watched and loved it, I told my mom she should watch it, and she also loved it!

C-Dramas -- Decided to wait for Back From the Brink to finish airing so I can bingewatch! After a long time away from Love Like the Galaxy, I'm slowly continuing my watch. It reminds me of War and Peace - epic in scale (including visual scale!), and a sprawling cast of characters... most of whom I don't like. Also slowly watching Sword Snow Stride, which has a zen-like feel that I appreciate.

Yeah it's fascinating!! They're both really good at what they are. Both feel very "full" to me - Sh**ting Stars with a big ensemble and lots of dialogue, and Call it Love with meaningful moments and depth of feeling. Call it Love uses silence very strategically to dig deeper into feelings and moments, so silence never feels empty. And it's cool seeing Lee Sung Kyung's range between the two!!

Oooh, love that use of “full” here. I totally see what you mean.

One of the things that I also feel connects these dramas—and this is a big leap, so I hope you’ll bear with me—is that the MLs in both dramas LOOK SO DIFFERENT when they smile from when they’re being serious. You can see it all in one drama for Kim Young-dae In Sh**ting Stars, but comparing the face of Kim Young-kwang in Call It Love to his silliness in Hello, Me!…it’s like night and day, IMO!

YES that's so true!!! I don't have as much to compare with Kim Young Dae, since my only other drama of his is Extra-Ordinary You, but Kim Young Kwang has been a favorite for a while. He's excellent in Call it Love, but my favorite role for him is actually Hello, Me! (That's one of my top-five dramas!!) There was just so much good character growth in that one, and KYK's character goes through such a lovely maturing process in it. He does comedy so well, but always with pathos, and switches between the silly and the serious believably.

I hope you love Sword Snow Stride as much as I did.

I'm really enjoying it! It seems more natural and "real" because there's comparatively little CGI, and so much is filmed outdoors with natural light (and it's hard for me to tell for sure, but I think it's undubbed and I really like that!). I'm on episode 14 and the ML has just leveled up, and they're going on a new quest, and it's getting more interesting! I really like the ML actor, and have Joy of Life on my list, too (especially since S2 is now in production).

Race
Loved that the bar was finally busy and that we are beginning to see things come together in the office power play. The Yoonjo and Jaemin love life complications remind me of More than friends and Jealousy Incarnate where the FL tries a relationship with the other guy and despite them being lovely are pulled back to the one they really love.

The Good Bad Mother
It was harder to watch this week as I really struggled with Samshik trying to constantly solve his problems by scamming someone rather than explaining to his parents what has happened, especially when he had been given money.

I look forward to seeing how this will tie up as the gangster politician and gangster wanna be baseball player need something big to tie them into the murder and corruption so they can be removed from threatening Kangho and his little family. This will take a lot because of their links with people in high places who consistently keep them from facing the consequences of their actions so they need a One dollar lawyer style take down.

Oh! Youngshim
These kinds of dramas where people get involved in things that don’t concern them annoy me. When Wolsok started to get involved and was ordering people around to play games at the office retreat they should have just refused to play. She has so little power and yet because people go along with her game playing she gets away with it. I just want to know where her partner is if she is such a pro at dating.

I cried in episode 7 it was so sweet and so sad. I loved this drama and wonder if it will get a second season since that seems to be the way things are going these days. I don’t know if there is a big enough market for this kind of web drama slice of life because it is very different to the other slow paced dramas that have longer episodes and run times.

Nagi’s long vacation - Japanese
A drama about finding oneself, and becoming part of a community. Nagi was the Queen of T-shirts that made statements. One had the Playboy bunny, it always surprises me when I see women wearing anything with the Playboy symbol on it. She was showcasing the extremes of minimalism so I was surprised that it had made it into her select wardrobe.
Thanks for the recommendation Lixie, an enjoyable watch about finding herself.

He who can’t marry annoyed me a lot it’s from 2006 so it may just be the era as some dramas don’t age well. There is a Korean version which I have not watched.

It is interesting how the class went from being bored before the field trip to seeing the class differently afterwards and noticing he was finishing on time when usually they couldn’t get out the door quick enough.

Thanks for the recommendation. I finished Miracles it was an interesting story reminding us of the influence we all have on each other and the importance of letting our light shine. I love Japanese dramas with their short series runs that tend to have very little padding.

Do you think the mum’s ‘friend’ was so he would not be worried when she needed a break, he would know she would always return from those visits? Was it to teach him what friends do for each other or not to worry that she would be lonely? It’s definitely a mystery😆

Is it an actual story, how can there be a part two after 35 hours?! Surely, that’s longer than War and Peace. I love a long listen, if it’s good. For some random reason my audiobook sample went for the introduction which is about context setting of the piece rather than a clip of the actual story. So I can’t assess the story which is annoying. I didn’t like the Chinese historical book The Pillow book that was turned into a drama on radio 4. I think it was probably cultural appropriation where they took bits of the original and then added a murder mystery element.

Me and the narrator will be firm friends after that length of time as he seems to be the go to for Japanese books and has narrated most if not all of the recent ones I have listened to.

oh yeah, the first 90 minutes of part one was an "introduction" that explains the context, etc... the chapters move "fast" (so unlike the intro), i guess i mean things happen in each chapter that the story somehow doesn't drag...

One Day Off will be saved for the right moment. I won't mention the many shows that Beanies have persuaded me to not even start.

The first two episodes of MPS really pulled me into the FL's story. Oh, the mom guilt! Also, I read Please Look After Mom during my travels. It was overdone, but still, sob, sob, mom, sniffle, sob.

I'm also looking fwd to Hearbeat, See You in My 19th Life, and King, the Land thanks to Beanie chatter. And I learned a promo with Junho can garner more comments than the finale of many shows!

DR. CHA (Ep 13-14): There were so many embarrassing public disclosures of characters' private facts to fill out a weekender bingo trope card. There are about a dozen hanging story lines that need to be sewn together in the next two episodes, not least of which is Cha's own life, family and career. Despite the chaos, everything sets up for a fairly predictable finale.

ONE DAY OFF (Ep. 1-4): What a nice slice-of-life diary of a burnt out school teacher who uses her day off to explore, experience and re-charge herself with day trips. She is smart but introverted; practical but a dreamer. When learn about her as she learns about herself. It is small, quiet flowing stream of introspection which is unique in the k-drama space. I find the pace, acting, direction and subject matter excellent.

Was hoping for just a little more from the romance, but I knew going in there wasn't even one kiss so I was prepared. Decided to rewatch Hoshi Furu Noru Yi because it more than makes up for the lack of kisses in Silent :D

On ep 14 of Cdrama Find Yourself. The SML is annoying; he's supposed to be only 5 years older than the FL, but he looks like he's the same age as her parents. The FL is annoying me a good bit right now too.

Oh! Young-shim I thought that it will be easy to turn a Kdrama about dating show and fake relationship into a good rom-com. But it's the second one and it's still meh.

My Perfect Stranger I really like this one. I like the family relationships, the mystery and the relationship between the leads. It would have been nice if the romance between the leads took a bigger place instead of the parents one. But I like them, they're confortable and cute together.

Delightfully Deceitful For once, it's the FL who is the genius!

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3 How long they will lure us with Kang Dong‑joo's appearance?

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 I'm sad that I'm not more invested in Rang's love relationship because I don't like the actress.

Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938: 9.0 Those PPL scenes of course were brilliant. The rest of days 7 & 8 were pretty good but still dragged the score down a bit -- it doesn't take much to mar perfection.

Doctor Romantic 3: 7.0 Once you are past the incision close-ups and the strictly medical tension, show is 59.014% lame plot contrivances. I've never liked to watch obnoxious characters like the politician & her aides so that whole plot line was a liability to the show trhu day 10. Not sure what to thing of her day 11 turn, but at least we didn't have to put up with her aides.

Delightfully Deceitful: 7.5 Give me a while to decide what I think of the story. Parts are great but the excessive empathy & obligatory childhood connection are not good signs. Hoping they make it live up to the alternate title "Beneficial Fraud" with her helping him win other cases, but so far it smells like a routine murder/revenge story originating from a special school that mistreated kids long ago. Seen enough of those.

My Perfect Mystery Stranger: 8.0

Bitch X Rich: 4.0 Bullying. Rich people being jerks. "Protagonists" lying themselves into awkward situations. These are a few of my least favorite things. Bye.

Happiness Battle: 3.0 Wall to wall rich people being snobs. The synopsis says there well be a death, but it needed to come sooner if they wanted to keep my interest. Out at 11 min 35 seconds.

So I'm in a bit of a drama slump, especially Wed/Thu, and I'm spending the extra time on Perun's Youtube channel rewatching defense/economics powerpoint slideshows and eagerly awaiting Sunday's new release.

I finished AYHT with a lot of help from the recaps in later episodes.

I had wished for a lot more bromance and conflict but there sadly wasn't. I thought things would get better when the real Shin wakes up, but it got worse because his whole point was you stole my life!? Why did nobody think of giving Shin3 a new face?

I read through the recaps and the only scenes I wished to watch were LJH's scenes but I honestly couldn't bother any longer😅

I didn't like the ending. Both because of the unnecessary fake-death-and-back, and because of the pairing. Maybe it's because I'm too practical, but I don't find these types of pairings romantic at all. It would have been better if he hadn't come back. At least that way I could accept that she couldn't help falling for him, but to actually going on with it and people accepting it? That takes me out of the moment completely.

I hope I haven't been too hard and disappointed you.

Rainless Love in a Godless Land: The execution of this was often messy, and it felt more logistically complicated than it needed to be, but I don't think I've ever seen a show explore the ways that reality affects belief and belief affects reality with such nuance and care.

Delightfully Deceitful: I'm a little hooked. The comedy was a lot less than I expected (mostly brought on by the characters' interactions with Yoon Park's delightfully obnoxious character), but I still enjoyed it. Not available on anything that I can subscribe to so I'm not sure how long I will continue with it. I have a higher bar for enjoyment when I have to stream it through less official sources.

The Real has Come: YES! Yeon-doo telling the family off! The confession of feelings!! I'm also enjoying having a cohabitation storyline with Se-jin's dad and Yeon-doo's mom. You usually don't get this with older adults. I'm starting to FF through Se-jin's parts to preserve my sanity.

Back from the Brink (up to ep 24): Some wtf-ery around episodes 16 and 17, which undoes character and relationship setup and development from the first 15 episodes. But there are consequences at least, so I'm not too angry. Still very watchable! Despite the plotting getting inane sometimes, I do like the characters for the most part and their interactions. The actors also portray them well.

A Love so Romantic (up to ep 11): Had this low production quality chinese costume web series playing in the background. You really need only half your attention span and you can predict and follow along everything without watching subtitles closely. Employer-employee contract turned brother-sister contract. I'm in it for the entertaining imagination sequences that pop up every now and then.

9 Tailed 1938 (2023). I just finished episode 6. Kim So-Yeon continues to dazzle. Lots of fun overall. The translation says that they are "demons" is that the correct/best word for our foxes and many of the characters?

What I have watched:

_ Mini drama Two Lights: Relumino. It was short but nice and different.

_ KBS Drama Special If we were a season. Nor bad nor very good. A "coming of age" story with a love triangle and some tropes.

_ Western series "Rabbit Hole". Quite entertaining. It's open to another season.

What I am watching:

_ Meteor Garden (C-drama. 2018) (27 out of 49). Totally hooked to this "trashtastic"(credits to @sicarius) show. Sometimes it gets on my nerves, and FL rarely is sincere with her feelings. But this is like a "telenovela", and these are usual things in this kind of series.

_ Good Manager (8 out of 20). I was thinking of dropping this drama, but since episode 6 I'm laughing more, so I'll keep watching.

Reads: first volumen (Spanish Edition) of manga "Tokyo Revengers". I have not watched the anime. I don't particularly like the drawings style but the story is interesting.

ONE DAY OFF: A+++ Eps 5-8. A drama cut from a different cloth. By leaving behind the noise of her life in the big city, she gets little glimpses of clarity. Out in the countryside, ordinary objects take on bold colors and lines are sharply etched. I especially loved the episode about a bakery tour of Jeju that turned into a search for the exact bread that reminded a little girl of her mother.

MY LOVELY SAM-SOON: First watched this a couple of hundred Kdramas ago, but on re-watching realize that I way under-appreciated it. While the ML could’ve been played by any number of good looking guys, it’s Kim Su-nah’s’ Sam-soon that is the heart and soul of this show, a woman of steely determination, a rock of common sense, but far from stony. She’s deeply vulnerable, even while not taking crap from anybody. Sometimes I want to yell at her while heartbroken on her behalf.
I love the side characters like her crazy mother and sister, and the timing of funny scenes like the rhythmic reappearance of the same blind date guy. Somewhere along the way, the show breaks out of its romcom shell and takes flight, becoming a more ambitious story about living life in the present, risking more pain, taking chances despite not knowing if things are going to work out.

I loved My Lovely Sam Soon. I've noticed that Viki has not been getting many new kdramas and it has more c-drama content now. For a while I thought they might move towards having more older dramas (k-dramas) as newer dramas were mostly showing up on bigger platforms. I'm wondering if Viki can even survive in this world of competing big streaming sites. I'm worried.

I concur, it would be very sad, especially when Viki subtitles are amazing (especially the ones that go the extra mile to provide context or further information!). Even things like the cute little names that the subtitling team comes up with for themselves for each drama, usually based on some kind of inside joke or reference to the drama, is so cute!!

Viki added a bunch of older kdramas recently and it looked like a desperation move to make their catalog seem more impressive and maybe attract viewers with sheer volume, but that's a not a sustainable strategy - the backlog of pre-2015 dramas is not going to increase, of course, and a lot of what they added are pretty bad shows.

My favorite sub team name: Team Cassiopeia for W: Two Worlds (the constellation looks like a giant 'W').

3

I came to viki after the end of dramafever. I loved that it has/had many older dramas and has brought in more of them. I'm not sure of the why to this strategy, but it worked for me. I like that it is more of a community then any of the other platforms including the reviews and the translations. But, in the last few months they have been reducing the number of dramas--many on my watchlist just disappeared without warning. Some, just came up as unavailable in region, also without warning. The sudden increase in Chinese dramas is also recent. It will be hard to access older dramas legally if it doesn't survive since I don't see Netflix/Amazon etc. keeping many of them available. Hmmm.

Thanks for writing about your appreciation for Kim Sam Soon, my most beloved kdrama. I fear it doesn’t resonate with many any more because it seems dated but this is the show that broke the mold and set so many tropes. I dearly love her ability to get her heart broken and still meet the world with an open heart. Sam Soon is still goals for me ❤️❤️❤️

It's not your imagination. I have noticed it too. Lots of k-dramas are unavailable in my zone (Europe), even shows that were available some weeks ago, now aren't.
However there are hundreds of C-dramas.

This is a link to an article that (2022) that says viki signed a contract with tencent video (a chinese company) to feature chinese dramas. This is probably the cause of the increase in chinese shows, but doesn't explain the decrease in korean shows.

I'm surprised Dramabeans hasn't written anything about the last 4 episodes of 'One Day Off' after having covered the first 4 so enthusiastically.

'Delightfully Deceptive', in the first two episodes, looked promising. I get the concept of teaming up an overly empathetic character with one who cannot feel empathy. Lets see where it goes.

'Oh! Yougsim' is a pleasant enough low-intellectual-effort watch.

I'm stalled watching 'Love Between Fairy and Devil' for no other reason than THERE ARE SO MANY EPISODES! I feel I've already watched 2 dramas and I have so many more episodes still to go.

Since we’ve now passed the first six -months of the year, I tallied up my shows, and not including my watching of older shows (10) and Japanese romances (5) I’ve completed 17 of the kdramas released in 2023. (I’ve started and dropped about 10 others, including, sad to say, 4 that are running right now.) Although most of the shows have had a happy ending, I’ve been struck by an overall grim tone throughout, even in the so called rom-coms. One of the two shows I’m watching this week kind of fits this pattern, although I’m enjoying it. The other, though, was very different.

Thanks to @dramaaddictally for her enthusiastic and thoughtful review, I watched One Day Off and completed it last night. It really is a charming, thought provoking episodic drama. Yes, you have to be in a certain mood—you don’t want to go into it hoping the character played by Lee Na Young is thirsty for revenge. But her encounters are little mini-stories in themselves, very poignant and approachable. Plus, if you are a pseudo-intellectual like me, you can bore friends and family by expounding on the deep themes in each episode, and there are some pretty profound themes in this drama, that appear without being preachy or ponderous. The latter is what my explanation adds!

Speaking of poignant stories, I’m still watching a show that is a LOT less profound, but surprisingly engaging to me, My Perfect Stranger. Yes, it’s a derivative time travel murder mystery that might end with a thud. But so far its kept me guessing. Also, it has a theme that as a parent I really appreciate -- learning about and finally understanding your parents. Maybe I should make my adult children watch it and they would shed a few tears rather than always hopping into time travel cars to go back to the 80s to try to prevent me from dating the woman who would become my wife.

I actually wept a bit myself these last episodes, averting my face from my wife so I wouldn’t have to confess that “this absurd serial killer mystery that features a time traveling Hyundai is making me cry.” Hyundais have made me cry before, but because of their repair bills, not emotional associations. I was never very elated by my Elantra, but maybe that was because I didn’t pay extra for the time-travel option!

I’ve been avoiding My Perfect Stranger because of the hints that there is a surprising level of interpersonal violence. Of course since its a murder mystery there are occasional shots of the victims, but so far there have only been 3 of them, and they are shown quickly. The one scene that I think someone mentions above is the police torture scene in episode 9. It is in some ways gratuitous--I think its primarily there to show the depth of loyalty to the character's brother, that he won't reveal his location regardless of the abuse. But It can easily be fast forwarded through, without missing anything. Other than that, its not one of those gruesome murder mysteries. Except for the torture scene there are no scenes that made me cringe, and I'm a pretty sensitive guy!

Current/recent:
My Perfect Stranger: Could we please move the mysteries along? And I want to see what happens when the damned car finally gets fixed!

Older stuff:
Stranger (Forest of Secrets) 1: Perfect. Just perfect. As perfect as Jo Seung-woo’s hair (which is perfect).

Be Melodramatic: If you'd told me I would love a show with an entire episode about farting, capped off with an upbeat OST about poop smells, I'd have said you were crazy. I’d be hard-pressed to pick a favorite moment - the massage chair PPL! The radio-controlled car pulling the FL in a wagon! The snippy head writer who turns into a bunny! Sohn Seok-ku being weird as hell washing dishes! I have a feeling there are lots of other little things to catch on rewatch, because there was just So Much Goodness.

Someday or One Day (Taiwan 2019): I fought this show all the way through ep. 8 (of 13), loving the time travel and most of the cast but - minority opinion- unable to accept Alice Ke as a high-schooler. (Go ahead, call me shallow, her acting is terrific but the wildly unflattering hairstyles that made her look about 40 hurt my eyes and took me right out of every HS scene.) The later timelines were great, but there weren’t enough of them. It was also so slow. And then ep. 9 finally arrived to grab me by the wrist, strap me into the rollercoaster, and take off for a hell of a ride. Wow. So glad I stuck with it.

Eun-joo’s Room: Trying this again now that I’ve found acceptable video quality on a different darkside site (although the subs suck). It’s an easy, relaxing watch that makes me feel like it’s a tiny victory every time my bathroom sink doesn’t fall off the wall.

Nine: Nine Time Travels: Just started; since I was already in one time-travel wormhole, I might as well continue down another.

Still on repeat watch of Till the End of the Moon. Don't ask me how many times. This is the only drama I've watched in the past 4 months ( while tramping around South America). Glad I wasn't influenced by Avenue X's ranting ( I liked Leo and BaiLu in Love is Sweet.) TTEOTM drew me in from the first episode and by the second, I was addicted. I am glad the drama is only 40 episodes and not 56. The pace was breathtaking and not once did I use the fast forward button. TTEOTM is easily among my Top 3 of all Chinese costume dramas, not only Xanxia. I like the drama for all the reasons already cited. Leo is utterly mesmerising. Bailu is my favourite actress. The fight scenes are unmatchable. I love the OST. etc. etc.

Our favorite show remains DR. CHA. It is just so well done. The final episodes are this weekend.

OH! YOUNG-SHIN is still trying hard but the show struggles at times. I agree with Deabakgrits that this is not the do-over we hoped for, but it is watchable.

We finally got the Confession that we have been waiting for on THE REAL HAS COME! I loved it almost as much as I loved the epic smackdown administered to our ML’s family by our FL. But the 2FL has figured things out- so here comes more trouble- and our 2ML is about to re-appear. Meanwhile the ML’s maknae is talking to and trying to sign a contract with our FL’s seven year old niece (this is not as weird as it sounds) not knowing (yet) that FL’s younger brother (and not her uncle) is the child’s father- nor that as soon as our leads register their marriage that she herself will now be the child’s aunt. It is good to have a truly comic storyline to go with the more makjang ones. Did I mention how annoyed I am at the ML’s siblings?

My wife is totally hooked on TAIL OF THE NINETAILED 1938 she also continues to watch THE GOOD BAD MOTHER but I myself have not.

I have sort of been skipping around several C-drama rom-coms. Not the best way to watch them. Mostly I am just looking forward to SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE, HEARTBEAT and KING THE LAND.

I watched The Good Bad Mother and had forgotten how many episodes it was haha. I can't believe it's already almost over. Feels like there may be alot of quick solutions. I hope the villains get their comeuppence and that it's satisfying. More twins! I'll definitely miss young Kang Ho with the kids but I'm curious about adult Kang Ho with them.

I watched Misaeng (Incomplete Life) and I'm still surprised it was as popular as it was considering it's just about working in an office. I guess people really resonated with it. It's always nice to feel seen. The trip to Jordan felt like such a tonal shift haha. I forgot the opening scene of the drama looked like an action shoot so I was thrown by the last 20 or so minutes. I like to think the 4 rookies are still meeting up like once a week or month, for symmetry haha. But seriously, I liked their comraderie and how they all seemed to really add something to the group. Even though the guys were embarassed, I hope that group picture still exists.

So far I've watched 1 episode of Prison Playbook. I wasn't expecting any levity so that was surprising and then it came to an end by the closing minutes. I know the lead character isn't supposed to be the smartest but SERIOUSLY, who gets on the bad side of the biggest, meanest cellmate and the head prison guard?! That doesn't scream survival instincts even if he thought he would be there a limited time. Alot can happen in that time.

I watched 1 episode of One Day Off. It's a bit slow for me so far but I get that it's supposed slow and quiet since she's at a temple and trying to find some inner peace or something. I don't know if I'll continue it; maybe I will since it's a short series.

One of my main criteria for dramas lately is no romance or at least that that isn't the main focus. Surprising or maybe not surprising, it's hard to find those types of dramas that capture my attention.

My drama watching lately is so non-existent that maybe I should skip a week or two... or more until I feel like actually enjoying shows again and not just forcing myself to do so.

TALE OF THE NINE-TAILED 1938: This drama is merrily heading into bloodshed and mayhem and I wish I was more mentally prepared for all that. With Season3 still up in the air we can only hope that whatever conclusion S2 is gonna have it would be at least logically satisfying, since it's kinda obvious now that emotionally it would be bittersweet at best. Seems like PAIN is gonna be the main theme of my year-end review if I ever get to write one)))

ASHES OF LOVE: I'm afraid I've overestimated myself((( I sat through 3 (!) more episodes this week, and even that took quite a bit of effort. Not sure how much it's a fault of epic post-TTEOTM hungover (guess I need an exorcist who will finally lift the dark spell that drama has on me) and how much it's just show being something entirely out of my preferences spectrum even after a lot of generous stretching involved, but end result is the same. I'm not fully giving up yet because I'm AWFULLY stubborn, but damn, couldn't it be at least a little easier? I wish I could just FF all the parts I don't care about - which is like 95% of the whole thing so far - but with a story so lengthy I'll probably lose any track of the plot if I do that. Is there a detailed - preferably episode by episode - recap somewhere that I can read and use as a skipping guide?

My wife watched ASHES OF LOVE and found it to be OK but not a show she would recommend to others. It would be entirely reasonable to drop it.

Many Chinese Fantasy dramas are among the very best shows that you can watch. If you want a show that is as good as TTEOTM (which my wife loved, even the ending which left some people cold) then here are a few (all are in the Xianxia tradition):

First is the great fantasy drama LEGEND OF FUYAO which was based upon the novel EMPRESS FUYAO. My son thinks that this story’s fantasy world is every bit as complete as Tolkien’s LORD OF THE RINGS. Another fine fantasy, starring the incomparably beautiful Ni Ni is LOVE AND DESTINY. You could also try ETERNAL LOVE and LOVE AND REDEMPTION. There is also the more recently broadcast IMMORTAL SAMSARA as well as the fabulous LOVE BETWEEN FAIRY AND DEVIL.

There are also fantasies which lie outside the Xianxia tradition, these are known as Xuanhuan and often contain non-Chinese story ideas and elements but mixed in with Chinese folklore. The recent costume drama THE BLUE WHISPER, starring the incomparable Dilmurat Dilraba, is a superb example of one of these fantasies.

I'm this close to follow your reasonable advice + voice of common sense and drop it, but like I've said, stubborn is my middle name and multiple people swore on their firstborns that it DOES get way more exciting/epic midway, so I'll probably try to hang on until there at least.

Cold is not the word I'd describe that ending, hellish rage would be more like it - for both professional and personal reasons))) But I think aside of AOL I'd better stay away from xianxia/c-fantasy altogether for a month or two, if only for cooling off. Maybe delving deeper into wuxia instead would be a good idea. There's no stress relief like watching a prettily choreographed fight))) I'll consult with my father on that matter, he surely knows some good stuff there since it's his main area of expertise. I believe the best examples of this genre are on the retro side though and may be hard to find with a proper subs. Maybe it's really time to succumb to the dark side and start learning Chinese... Why wasn't it as accessible as an option when I was younger and faster-brained?

LEGEND OF FUYAO sounds promising - rich lore is one of the main attractions of fantasy. Comparison with LOTR is an exceptional praise though, I'm intrigued. Other dramas I've heard about and wasn't really excited about, but I'll note them too, thank you.

Read about xuanhuan as a genre just yesterday, and it seems like I haven't watch any show like that yet. There is a separate tag for it on MDL, I assume?

So I've looked it up and there is indeed one, but with a limited amount of search results - under 70, nearly half still unreleased - which is a tiny drop in the huge sea of cdramas. With such a limited amount of options to choose from I'll probably leave it for later tho. I've used up most of my luck in blind-and-random show picking on TTEOTM and need some time before using this totally scientific method once again)))

0

I might also note that many avid watchers of Chinese Costume drama watchers are actually needing to take a break after TTEOTM, including my wife who really loves them. She has BACK FROM THE BRINK all teed up and ready to go but is having trouble pushing the play button right now. Instead, she has been watching Hallmark movies, British mysteries and a few other things. It may be that part of what is going on for you is a similar kind of withdrawal symptom.

1

I guess so, addictive quality of that show is really legendary - akin to especially strong spice completely numbing one's taste buds for a while. We all need group therapy and free milk to soothe the burns)))

Heard that BFTB is quite fine and cute, at least initially, but around Ep18 or so a drastic change of writer(s) happened and plot stopped making any sense, leaving fans rather furious. Seems like latest episodes got back on track tho. Let's see how they handle the ending first.

I am rewatching Ghost doctor bc weekends do be slow to come but still rewinding Uee parts cause that character, if i had to live with her i would use any excuse to knock her unconcsious. Kim Bum is so different in GD and as Rang in Tof9T. Seon Tak is a kind of "C'est la vie, cuckoo!" type, that doesnt stay attached to a situation (what a great way to live! ) he is like a lucky fool and Rang on the other hand is like hypersensitive, edgy and attracts danger, and is deeply agftected by everything. It made me think on law of attraction and that you attract what you are, and your thoughts become who you are. in the end it is true we can only help ourselves. nobody aint going to save us from our own thoughts.

not watching much else, I made my speech draft, of course it has zombies in it and ghosts. and finished travel photo album with 400 photos.

"This is dedicated to all the ordinary yet brave people who use love and hope to make this world more kind."
I am a fan and will be there for the next time/season 2 as this has become my number one favorite C-drama.

I also recently finished JOY OF LIFE (2019) (Viki US) and loved it. Coming in at 46 episodes I will not be starting it again lol. The good news is JOY OF LIFE SEASON 2 is now in production with most if the original cast. ML Zhang Ruo Yun continues to amaze me. I will be there for season 2.

ZRY recommendation. If you would be interested in seeing ZRY out from under all those robes go to his ORDINARY GREATNESS. (2022) (iQIYI) (38 eps.). It is a terrific contemporary slice of life police drama about uniformed police officers in a station house. Something like the kdrama LIVE (2018). I subscribed to iQIYI so I could watch ZRY’s performance and he was great as was the rest if the cast.

For a fellow Joy-of-Lifer's recommendation, I will hunt down Ordinary Greatness. Thanks for the reply. I've been walking around for hours just shaking my head and saying "Wow".

I’m patiently waiting for JOY of LIFE 2 and NIRVANA in FIRE 3.
2023 is not my year with new dramas. I’ve spent my free time rewatching and appreciating old favorites.

It was brilliant. I'm currently doing a slow rewatch. I love the little boy in the beginning - indeed a worldly wise little creature. It is well worth following up on anything ZRY has been in, especially Snow Sword Stride.

Started my own slow re-watch this evening. Every scene, every interaction is loaded with clues. I may venture to suggest that it is among the best of the best. This from a Nirvana in Fire super fan.

Misaeng - I’d like to thank the Beanies who mentioned Misaeng as their choice in the You can only pick one: Slice-of-life dramas post. This has been in my watchlist but I only got to start it after that post. And boy… I am enjoying it so much! It’s giving me My Mister vibes (which I also love). Beautiful, flawed characters, heavy storyline but there’s the excitement on the corporate tension and effortless comedy gold. Only halfway through (12/20 episodes), but I can already tell this is for keeps. I’m happy to have another drama added to my favorite list.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it so far!! It is a gem of a drama - I'm kind of jealous that you get to experience it for the very first time!

To my elementary co-teacher I suggested: We need a rooftop.
Every job everywhere needs a place to get jhiggy wid it (acknowledge that whatever comes down from upper admin is nuts}. Welcome to the Misaeng club!!
Recently a person who works in film production here in New Mexico, asked me what is my fav Kdrama, I could only respond with "My Mister". Firstly it is on Netplix. Second it is so well written, acted and directed that it translates everywhere. I always add that it "starts very dark and ends very light".

My Perfect Stranger – I'm dropping this after 8 episodes. So many things distract me. Two schoolboys are among the 3 suspects when a teacher is murdered, a teacher they hardly know. The two murder victims seen so far are both tied with a red string nobody pays any attention to. It all happens in a village with so few people that wearing a blue cap is enough to identify you, but the police department has some 10 detectives. Where did the ML get the idea he can fix a broken time-travel car? Of course he can't!

Another thing... In E08, the ML's father says he will help, but only those who are smart – defining "smart" as someone who can solve Rubik's Cube in under 5 seconds. Why 5 seconds? Probably because the current world record (2023) is under 5 seconds. But in 2003 (the oldest I have found) , say, the world record was 14 seconds. In 1987, it must have been a lot slower.

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: I love this show so much! Each and everyone of the characters is just brilliant, and the set design and costumes are gorgeous.

Dr Cha: I do not want to give away the ending, but I am MASSIVELY annoyed. The last two episodes really were the worst.

The Glory: Finally finsihed part 1 and 2. I did feel a bit let down at the end, not sure why, but it was a good, though disturbing watch. It didn't flow as well as I thought it would. Most of the 'revenge' tools used were mere flukes and didn't show much for the long term planning. At one point it felt things were being handed onto Dong-Eun's plate by some divine intervention. Some of the skin show didn't make much sense either other than making it a typical Netflix show (Cha Joo Young has beautiful nude visuals but seemed kind of wasted in a revenge bullying drama). Also, I absolutely didn't feel any chemistry between the leads. Was it just me? Later I learned the ML and the villain (Lim Ji Yeon is spectacular) are dating. maybe that's why? Don't know. Found the ML super cute and looking forward to watch The Good bad mother once it ends.

Our Beloved Summer: This was a long drawn watch. I shipped the couple, but the darned thing was SO repetitive that I almsot gave up in the middle. I could have FF several episodes and they were exactly where they were....it was frustrating and should have been at least four episodes less. But it was innovatively crafted otherwise and Woo Shik is a cutie, though I am still on the fence with Kim Da-mi. It did leave me with a sweet feeling overall which feels nice.

The Concubine (movie): It made me sit up for its shock value. After watching slew of chaste K-dramas full of fish kisses, hand holding passing for passion and hugs making up for lack of love making, this popped my eyes out. The movie wasn't great by any measure, but boy, they didn't hold back. Some of the scenes are designed to gross you out even though the characters are having almost pornographic sex. And the shock never ends, right till the end. This also made me realize why some of the recent dramas might have caused immense frustration with the romance fans LOL!
