I had my own thoughts:
(1) Inkigayo was not a Kdrama but a variety show... how rarely that a non-Kdrama/variety show was officially nominated for Baeksang Award.
(2) Netflix dominated Baeksang this year, either a Netflix originals or even Netflix acquired originals. Reborn Rich was already available on Netflix in South Korea only but we'll might have to wait for the confirmation of the Netflix availability release date outside South Korea this year (hopefully). Big Bet was a Disney+ original. Non-Netflix originals are Anna, New Recruit and Weak Hero Class 1.

I don’t know why I feel so robbed. The Glory won the Best Drama? Compared to it’s competitors? Even me feeling slighlty insulted for them, especially sorry for Little Women team (they don’t reall winning a good one). At least they gave Best Actress to SHK because PEB is won the Daesang. But what is the redemption for giving The Glory the Best Drama trophy?

Honestly, at this point they just make sure each drama or movie in the listed as nominees get an award. They don’t care whether one could have the best screenplay, or actor, or directing altogether in one drama. They just won’t give a solid project the number of trophies it actually deserves.

Misogynistic? Why? The intention was quite obvious in my opinion and I liked the female protagonist as one the most realistic probably antiheroes in Dramaland, she has scars, she wants revenge, and most importantly she doesn't let go.

Hmmm …

But why is saying YJ isn't a good mother and looking down at HJ prosmicuity count as being mysogynistic?

I think the bad perception toward their characters is normal because what they did is bad, not because they're women or not.

Don't worry, you don't sound harsh. If you say you don't really want to discuss the matter, I respect that, I would only like to say something in general as a woman, we do make decisions because of our status, but hurting random people, cheating, and looking down on others is not part of it.

My takeaway from it was that they were shitty people from the beginning and the disloyalty and to a lesser extent promiscuity displayed later in life was a just a reflection of how much they hadn't changed meaning they were shitty people before the adultery and promiscuity. Also its not polyamory if the husband didn't know there was a 3rd party in the relationship. The striking thing about YJ 's adultery is the fact that she didn't cheat because she loves the other guy. She is clear that she loves her husband and merely cheated on him because she could.
I enjoyed the fact that the protagonist cannot be described as a heroine as she simply refuses to forgive. Which isn't common with female protagonists who are routinely expected to be softer and more forgiving with their enemies ultimately destroying themselves. Throughout she manipulates all of them and plays an active part in their downfall. The context was always the background of them as bullies deserving of punishment ,the adultery and other failings were just the key weaknesses she exploited to punish them in the present not what they were punished for.

Lol I don't find it realistic at all , just enjoyable. I doubt that anyone in real life would have the focus and strength to plot and plan for so many years to get back at their childhood bullies. Time passes by and we get distracted by bills ,work and the new bullies we encounter in college and work. Most people who experience this just silently get on with their lives and either end up in therapy or pass on their trauma to their children. No one really gets a chance to go back and confront the people who bullied them in school .So for a lot of us its just the wish fulfilment of stuff from your youth you still cant get past.

I feel the same. I was rooting for Our Blues. I'm always partial to an ensemble cast and this show had it. The Glory? I was rooting for Lim Ji-yeon to win the supporting actress because she was phenomenal but that's it for this show. IMO, it was the weakest among all the contenders. I don't care if it has a renowned writer. It's nice to see Song Hye-kyo back but IMO Kim Hye-soo was robbed an award. Good for her - she didn't show up for the award show.

a few surprises for me. I didnt think the glory would win best drama at all. and honestly, I think SHK getting the best actress over hyesoo doesn't make a lot of sense, no matter how successful the drama was.

on the other hand, lee sungmin getting best actor was probably the most expected award for the night. and park eunbin with the daesang is a small surprise because for a moment i thought the industry could have forgotten EAW because it was almost a year ago, but at the same time its not an absurd for her to win it at all. it was my favorite performance last year and I'm super happy that her hard work throughout these years got her this big award. our two new actors were also expected considering their popularity and the projects they were on. they did a good job and I didn't think anyone else could take the awards from them.

I feel like EAW got the best director award as a way to recognize the drama as a whole. but unfortunately, that led to little women not getting the best director, which I think would have been the right decision. EAW should be the best drama, if that's what they wanted to do.

I agree that the dresses are pretty individually (and everyone was looking gorgeous), but where is all the color? I even clicked through to the other photos and it's like they all decided ahead of time to coordinate and wear neutrals. I'm not the biggest fan of Ryu Jun-yeol's olive suit, but it feels like a breath of fresh air amid all the black and cream!

Drama:
When Lee Sung-min won best actor, I knew the Daesang was open for Park Eun-bin. She has been a joy to watch since "Empress Myeongseong." I teared up during her speech; she was gracious and humble as always. The only other actress I got emotional over was Chun Woo-hee when she won best actress for "Han Gong-ju" at the Blue Dragon Awards.

Film:
I'm so happy for Teng Wei, who won best actress for "Decision to Leave" and Byun Yo-han, best-supporting actor in "Hansan: Rising Dragon.
Park Haeil better win the best actor at the Blue Dragon Awards.

Great that the movie Decision won the Daesang and Tang Wei, the best actress. Let’s wait for another year when Park Hae-il gets his long deserved Best actor. BYH is impressive as the antagonist in Hansan. I think he’s now 100% ,Chungmuno - can’t recall when he was in drama last.

On the other hand, happy for Ryu Jun-Yeol as the newly minted best actor. I only saw the trailer but is indeed good.

I forgot that Park Hae-il already won the Blue Dragon best actor for "Decision to Leave" last year.
I haven't seen Ryu's Night Owl, but I'm happy for him.
Byun Yo-han started his career in Chungmuro. He did a lot of Indie movies, but most of them have no subs.
I'm looking forward to his new drama with Song Kang-ho. It's been a while since "Mr Sunshine."

I'm sad that Lee Sung-min didn't win the Daesang.

The most-deserving award of the night was Lim Ji-yeon for Best Supporting Actress.

Best New Actor and Best New Actress winners Moon Sang-min and Roh Yoon-seo need to star in a drama together because they would make a beautiful couple and are the same age.

Its ironic that Song Hye-gyo won best actress award when a year ago we were wondering if she even knew *how* to act after watching 'Now We Are Breaking Up'. In Ms. Song's defense, though, if you look closely at the series you'll notice EVERYBODY was wooden and lifeless, even Jang Ki-yong! That's on the head of the director, not the actors. It takes a special talent to be able to turn gold into poo.

While I am over the moon with Park Eun-bin winning the daesang and Lee Sung-min winning best actor, I want to bang my head against the wall from frustration with The Glory winning the best drama and Song Hye-kyo winning best actress with Kim Hye-soo on the list along with other, at least from my viewpoint, more deserving actresses.

I am okay with best director, best Screen play awards even though it wasn't my original pick and for sure the best new actor and actress are making me jump with joy. But those mentioned above are getting me frustrated.

I'm so happy for Park Eun-bin, she really deserved it. She was the focus in Extraordinary Attorney Woo.

Best Drama : I don't think The Glory was the best drama... It was difficult to choose in the nominate list but The Glory was cleary not the winner for me.

Best Director : I like the winner. Kim Hee-won for Little Women would have been a good winner too.

Best Screenplay : I'm so happy for My Liberation Notes. This drama was unique. I'm happy that the Hong sisters didn't win because AoS 1 and 2 were really badly written, nothing made sense.

Best Actor : You can't do wrong with Lee Sung-min as a winner. He was great in this role. My second choice was Sohn Seok-gu in My Liberation Notes.

Best Actress : Song Hye-gyo wasn't great in The Glory. I think a lot of actresses could have done the same or better. She had no chemistry with Lee Do-Hyun. Kim Hye-soo was the heart of Under the Queen’s Umbrella and we could feel her love for these boys.

Best Supporting Actor : I didn't watch Narco-Saints but I don't have doubts about Jo Woo-jin's win.

Best Supporting Actress : If someone needed to win for The Glory, Im Ji-yeon was a good choice. But it's sad they didn't recognize the actors who played the younger versions because for me, they had the most difficult part to play between torture and victim.

Best New Actor : I liked Moon Sang-min in Under the Queen’s Umbrella. He was good in the first part of the drama but when I was expecting to see more from his character, some evolution, he stayed the same. Hong Kyung was good in Weak Hero Class 1. He portrayed an interesting character.

Best New Actress : Noh Yoon-seo was good in Crash Course in Romance and in Our Blues.

Technical Award : it's weird how they mix everything together. But Little Women was really beautiful.

Agree that AOS didn't deserve to win the best screen play especially the second part.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'll be quite honest I'm not a fan of "fantasy or historical" but AOS was quite entertaining but compared to other dramas released last year it was too extraneous with too many fantasy elements and fantasy plot devices to be taken seriously compared to the other dramas released last year that were more realistic and detailed.
But AOS helped to push the "kdrama phenomenon" more globally. I'm not saying other dramas nominated weren't global but AOS went extremely international,so it was a win for them in that aspect IMO.

3

Required fields are marked *

The FL's soul/body story didn't make any sense. They had an interesting world fantasy they didn't use.

I don't think AoS helped to push the Kdrama phenomenon. It was Squid Game that really opened the door. Since some dramas had more and less reached the international audience.

The drama rested on Hong Sisters's past successes.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't think it helped push kdramas globally, but I think it did stretch kdrama storytelling in the historical fantasy genre. They built their own world, even if the world-building was a little wobbly. I laud them for being ambitious and doing something different than the other kdramas.

I hope it inspired other writers, who may have a better knack for high fantasy world-building, to write their own screenplay and get it produced.

Is it good or bad that none of the results surprised me? Hmm... Anyway, congrats to all winners - some may be objectively more deserving than others, but nothing super controversial this time. Wonder what following year will bring us... Personally I'd appreciate a little more intrigue, it's kinda boring when everything is this predictable)))

P.S. A little off-topic, but what would be China's equivalent of Baeksang? I mean, in "let's pretend we care about quality over buzz" category. I'm still very new to that market and don't have full picture yet, only a vague knowledge that their station award shows are the purest kind of popularity contest and infamous for their messy fanwars and being rigged af, just like anywhere else)))

Required fields are marked *

I think it may be the Golden Eagle Awards even though it is just TV and not TV+movies+theatre. They only hold it every other year so competition is fierce. There had even been a Golden Eagle Goddess selected for each show from all the beautiful, super popular actresses. They cancelled it in the 2022 show. I'm guessing it's because they got tired of fans getting all bent out of shape over who gets chosen.

Anyways, the nominees and winners are typically dramas international audiences wouldn't be into. Those dramas will get the popularity-driven awards, like tencent or weibo awards.

Oh, I see, thank you. So it's kinda like with k-weekenders - big awards usually go to shows that pull huge ratings on TV among mainstream audience. Makes sense.

Whoops, just realized what I wrote was unclear.

What I meant is that the c-dramas that appeal more to international audiences tend to get the popularity-driven awards, like tencent and weibo.

When you look at the winners and nominees of the Golden Eagle awards - there will be many unfamiliar ones.

1
3

Required fields are marked *

Don't worry, I understood what you meant. Do international viewers actually have impact on these popularity awards tho? Aside of contributing to legal streaming and such. I've been under impression that chinese web world is not really foreigner-friendly for variety of reasons. So no matter how hot the show may be abroad, if majority of fans can't vote for it when annual award seasons comes...
I also understand that many shows don't get subbed, which probably twists the overall picture even further.

1

I don't think international viewers impact these awards at all. But I think it can be a surprise to international viewers that winners/nominees of more prestigious awards are people they've never heard of. And then there are these others awards given out by other entities that nominate/award actors/dramas we've heard or have talked about. Whereas in the baeksangs, the nominees don't feel like surprises to international audiences?

1

Difference in market size plays a role, I think. C-ent seems HUGE, especially for newbies who don't speak the language like me. You need invest some serious time and effort to get even basic grasp of it. I bet many kdrama newcomers have no idea about Chungmuro and its stars either, for example)))

0

Eunbin getting the daesang came as a pleasant surprise because while i knew she deserved it more than anyone, i didn't think they'd actually give it to her. And to think that it was a unanimous decision of all 7 judges, despite stiff competition from the two most popular shows of baeksang szn, veteran actor Lee Sungmin, and former daesang winner Kim Eunsook.

It's amazing seeing her go from zero votes last year for best actress to all votes this year for daesang. When her name was called, you could tell from her expression she really thought she was going home without an award, yet she got the biggest one. Despite being emotional, she articulated her thoughts pretty well in a speech that reflected her struggles as a child actor and the motivation that came from believing she could eventually get a daesang. YW was a role she initially rejected, yet see where it got her to. Such a humble, talented, eloquent woman. The highlight of the night, really

8

reply

Required fields are marked *

Right on! Other child actors can definitely empathize with her challenges, as many of them still struggle when taking on adult roles. However, she has seamlessly transitioned into young adult roles, particularly in her standout performance in "AGE OF YOUTH." It was truly impressive to see her portray a vibrant and quirky character, breaking away from her usual meek roles.

It's my hope that she doesn't forget about the little guys who supported her, such as the smaller stations, the new writer, and the PD, who believed in her talent. While she will undoubtedly receive love calls from popular and established writers and PDs, I trust that she will make wise decisions when choosing her future projects.

Not necessarily first time ever, but nominee is supposed to be a rookie. I think actors are eligible for a few years after debut in drama/film (separately), bonus points if it's their first significant role.

I'm going to be quite honest, I felt a bit iffy about the glory winning best drama . I know it's under the "revenge thriller" category but it was slower paced than most thriller dramas,so it should have some character depth but it somehow lacked that, I don't know if I'm the only one that noticed. But the cinematography and scenic directing were good, the revenge execution was executed alright too,it wasn't too overboard like most revenge dramas but was executed alright though.I'm happy that extraordinary attorney woo(I can't explain how wonderful this drama was to me, from the realistic characters, personalities,to how attorney woo's emotions were relayed ,park eun bin acted so well) ,and also for "my liberation notes"while watching this drama I hoped it would win best screenplay or best drama because the writing and execution was brilliantly and complexly detailed, the characters were so real, the acting was so good. I'm a big fan of detailed acting and slice of life dramas ,so this one was a YES for me. I'm not going to try to and invalidate the credibility of the awards, because every show nominated or every actor nominated put in hard work, being nominated is as good as winning the main award because it shows that the drama or actor is seen as being worthy enough to be awarded in whatsoever honorary award category.

The exception is for the Glory to win best drama! It was not bad, but should not have been nominated in the first place. I think there were better nominees to win best actress, but Im Ji-yeon as best supporting actress fully deserved her award.

Summary of what I feel about the results :

- Film department (before going to drama section): did not expect Ryu Jun Yeol to win this. In fact, his winning the trophy break the cycle of seasoned Chungmuro actors winning the Best Actors of Film category for years - you know, the likes of Park Hae Il, Ha Jung Woo, Lee Byung Hun ... these guys keep winning one after another .... on the other side, I totally expect Tang Wei to won the Actress category for Decision to Leave (the first non-Korean actress to do so?) - her ooze, or gazes, her sexy seducing menace is on another level entirely in that movie.

- I have less gripe with the winners as opposed to the nominations announcement. Probably because it boils down to just choosing one of the five nominees, just with any awards shows like Oscar, Grammys, or Emmys

- Grand Prize: now, I did not expect this. Honestly I thought SHK will win this one however it goes to PEB instead, which is a HUGE surprise - making her one of the youngest Daesang winner is it?

- Best Drama : no ... should not be The Glory. I prefer EAW here. Lucky for it to win this one, but The Glory had such the right release date & timing that it might be struck heavily with the jury. I do think Our Blues deserves better, too.

- Actor : yeah, Lee Sung-Min all the way. No complaints here.

- Actress: honestly it will be great if PEB win this one as well, but no ... they have to spread the prize, so it went to SHK instead ... not that her acting there is bad, but I do feel PEB, KJW and KHS, out-acted her amongst the nominees ... (I don't think KHS will win again though - she had two Best Actress trophies in her bag already)

- Supporting Actor: actually, in Narco-saints, Hwang Jung-Min gave a more memorable performance as the main villain compared to Jo Woo-Jin - but I think it is rightfully deserved, amongst the nominees.

- Supporting Actress: locked all the way to Lim Ji-Yeon (since *sigh* they seem FORGOT to nominate Uhm Ji-Won)

- Director: it should have been director Kim from Little Women, honestly.

- Screenplay: glad for MLN won this one.

- Technical: I always wonder why they jumble all the different tech categories like this. I mean in Oscar, they took time to separate the categories et. cinematography, score, editing, etc.

- Finally, some thoughts are still lingering with me even long after the noms announcemenet - where are great dramas like Pachinko or Recipe for Farewell?

The prestige of a Baeksang award is important: a winner gets a pay upgrade, more opportunities, better project offers, more CFs, etc.

But like all award shows, there are industry politics, popularity contests, longevity over performance and breakout roles that factor into the final decisions.

2

Required fields are marked *

1. Does the "pay upgrade and more opportunities" from winning the baeksang only apply to the winners? What of the nominees?

2. It might seem like longevity determines the awards over performance some times but not everytime. I remember kimsoohyun winning best actor award and he was so surprised because he was competing with older actors who have been in the game.

#2. Same with Kang Ha-neul when he won. It was his first leading role for When the Camellia Blooms and he was up against veterans: Hyun Bin (Crash Landing), Namkoong Min (Stove League), etc. I don't think he expected to win because he didn't wear a tux.

It seems to me that if you've won in the past, there's a chance you won't win again, in the TV acting category anyway. Maybe this is why Kim Hye-soo didn't win because she's got 2 Baeksangs and chockful of awards already. Lee Sung-min did win for Misaeng in the past. I haven't seen Reborn Rich, but word is he was phenomenal so he wins again. It's more like the older actors/actresses don't get nominated, like Go Doo-shim and Kim Hye-ja from Our Blues because they've won so many already.

Much hate for The Glory in this thread.. I actually expected it to win,as just like Squid Game, it did make the right kind of buzz in SK and internationally. I personally liked it too as there was never a dull moment, which I cant say for MLN and Our Blues ( which I both dropped). If I were a judge though, I would give it to Little Women.

Happy for my girl crush PEB, she deserved this.

While Lim Ji Yeon did good, I would have preferred if the supporting actress was given to Yeom Hye Ran also from The Glory instead. She had much better acted scenes though less screen time than LJY. To me, the younger version of LJY's character (Shin Ye-eun) was more menacing and more convincing as a villain (those eyes still give me the chills).

Anyway, congratulations to all the winners.

I have much respect for Yeom Hye-ran's work but knew she wasn't going home with the award. Baeksang loves to give others a chance. YHR was nominated in the supporting category for When the Camellia Blooms in 2020 and won it for The Uncanny Counter in 2021.

The Glory is the least deserving of the award. Imo. I was disappointed by Little Women, but even that had a better message. Son Hye-kye had a good performance though. And the supporting actress as well. I didn't watch her drama, but I just know Kim Hye-soo would act circles around the most of nominees.

Anyway YAY for our favourite actor Park Eun-bin!! ❤️💐

Congrats to everyone! Tough competition this past year. It's a surprise to realize that when usually at the end of the year, it doesn't feel like an awesome year. I'm always interested in seeing the "best new actor/actresses" awards and nominees. I hope to see these rookie actors grow and rise up to bigger roles.

I was also glad to see that Roh Yoon-seo won Best New Actress- she was not only good in CRASH COURSE IN ROMANCE but also fabulous in OUR BLUES. She has a real presence on the screen.
