You can only pick one: Jo Seung-woo drama

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one Jo Seung-woo drama

missvictrix: Uh, can I say Sisyphus even though I didn’t like it and couldn’t finish it? Because even though I neither liked nor finished, I adored the premise entirely, and I adored Jo Seung-woo as the brainiac faced with some seriously crazy situations. I was desperately holding on to any logic that would or could be found in this drama, but sadly, a drama needs more than a great and imaginative premise, and with each episode the thing fell apart. With crazy plotting and a terrible romantic pairing shoved into the storyline (Park Shin-hye and Jo Seung-woo are great on their own, but not paired), this drama became unbearable. But Jo Seung-woo was awesome.

mistyisles: Unfortunately, the only thing I’ve seen Jo Seung-woo in is God’s Gift—14 Days, which I can’t bring myself to recommend to anyone unless you completely skip the ending. Or unless you like endings that are pointless and infuriating. That said, his character and acting in that show were phenomenal (and that’s the main reason the ending was so infuriating), and I’ll never forget that one captivating scene of him singing “Magic Castle.” So there’s that.

DaebakGrits: I haven’t watched many of Jo Seung-woo’s dramas. In fact, I’ve yet to complete one. I dropped Sisyphus, and Divorce Attorney Shin is still airing. Since I’m enjoying the heck out of Divorce Attorney Shin, it’s my obvious pick. There’s so much to love about this new legal drama, but I think the most appealing part for me is the bromance and camaraderie between Shin Sung-han and his besties. They’ve got each other’s back when it’s needed, but even their serious moments are peppered with silliness that feels natural and entirely relatable for me because I’m someone who often softens somber moments with humor. Hopefully, this drama will end as strong as it started. Either way, Jo Seung-woo’s acting has made me want to look into some of his older dramas and films.

solstices: This is a really hard question, because Jo Seung-woo has a number of memorable works under his belt that are strong in both script and performance alike. Still, I suppose it isn’t much of a competition when Forest of Secrets is amongst the contenders. I’ve always been a nerd for social commentary, and both seasons of the show delivered such incisive insight into the inner workings of South Korea’s judicial system. Needless to say, Jo Seung-woo elevated the intricate script with his nuanced portrayal of Hwang Shi-mok. In someone else’s hands, Shi-mok could have easily fallen flat as a bland and rigid protagonist. Instead, Jo Seung-woo imbued him with such palpable emotion, repressed as they were beneath his reserved demeanor. Displaying incredible restraint, Jo Seung-woo led us through every step of Shi-mok’s emotional development, eventually culminating in such triumphant moments of catharsis when our pensive prosecutor finally learnt how to crack a smile. Forest of Secrets is a deeply thought-provoking slow burn of a series, and I’ll always be eagerly waiting for the next installment.

Ran here to see if someone picked Sisyphus and someone really did!
Anyway, I'll go with the more conventional answer Forest of Secrets because Jo Seung-woo was amazing in it and the drama itself is perfection. I rewatch it every few months just to remind myself how good kdramas can be.

The wife and I are currently binge watching both seasons of FOS for the umpteenth time. I recommend Kdramas so often a feel like a drug dealer. For noobs, I always start with Hospital Playlist because (1) Netflix ease of access and (2) the show goes down super smooth. This is the gateway equivalent of pot. When someone coms back for more, I hit them with the fentanyl speedball, FOS.

Wow that’s quite a contrast in genres has it ever backfired where they couldn't handle the change of pace/style? I am wondering about alternatives on your list as FOS would be death from OD for me as I wouldn’t manage the switch at all. I love your analogy😊

None so far but my better half has a theory that the show is so plainly high quality even if not to one's taste. such that no one wants to admit not liking or understanding it.

As for alternatives, the ones I want to recommend but am more hesitant to do so are Misaeng and My Ajusshi, but I tend to think people would have problems with that one. I see them as professional grade kdramas, lol.

I liked Healer which stretched me because of the thriller elements but the other elements balanced it out for me so I know anything else along those lines would be too much.

I have Misaeng and My Ajusshi on the watchlist like you said they are heavy duty. I recommend Yumi’s cells for rom com in an unusual style and Be melodramatic for genre salad. I am also thinking I might add Chief Kim as that was sheer joy for me. I think they would be the equivalent of the happy pills; some possible side effects but more mainstream. So far people have liked Yumi but not necessarily got the humour of Be Melo as that is playing on knowing the tropes to get the full depth of what makes it a classic.

same im still in shock about that.
it was my first and last drama i watched with him as im ✨traumatized✨

I feared this day would come!

I know it’s easy to pick Stranger, but when it comes to some excellent micro acting and screen presence Life would be the one I would choose. His entire being was Gu and he was breathing life into the show. And to think he wasn’t even on screen all the time.

Also, I think I have liked him in some movies more but I am sticking to dramas here.

I loved him in Life, so, so much. My pick too. He was the show. Period.

And of course Forest of Secrets. Both seasons are my favourite drama ever.

You are me!!
I loved him in Life. That was my Jo Seung-woo gateway drug. And as you said, he breathed life into that role. Gu Seung-hyo was one of the most complex characters I have ever watched. You can't classify him as a villain, anti-hero, or even hero. He is just a man with a goal and given a task he must complete. I was actually happy he left the hospital because he was too good for them.

Absolutely! It’s easy to play a protagonist or a villain, but he treaded that grey zone with so much panache! I was completely mesmerized watching him play this role.

Gu is Life 🥰

And the scene where this powerful man cowered while being tongue-lashed by his mother was beyond price. He captured me in the first episode of STRANGER, and I‘ve watched him in everything I could find.

I'm convinced I'd never like Forest of Secrets if the leads were played by different people, so this rules the show out. Sisyphus... let's just not go there. How about Horse Doctor? Nowhere near the great show by itself but he was so darn cute there! And I'll take horses anytime over divorce cases or child murder investigations.

Dramaland is Jo Seung-woo's latest adventure. Some of his best work is on the big screen and in musicals.
Drama - Forest of Secrets 1 and 2.
Movie - Marathon.
Musical - Jekyll & Hyde.

In movies, Marathon definitely has the more superior performance but I also have a fondness for Tazza Jo Seung-woo.

I have a soft spot for "Go Go 70s" because it's my mom's favorite. The songs and dance moves are her thing. LOL

The one that I love most is "Chunhyang," his first movie, and sageuk. He was young and green, but his movie got me interested in Korean history and the Korean film industry. It was the first time I heard of the filmmaker legend, Im Kwon-taek.
Many thanks to viki for subbing this old drama. I'd missed out on Jo Cheung-woo's work if I didn't watch this drama.

Oh I must try out Go Go 70s then - if I can find it!
I remember liking the story-telling style of Chunhyang a lot with the use of pansori and other folk elements.

Park Shin-hye and Jo Seung-woo are great on their own, but not paired
Well said. I have this issue in some romance pairings as well.

If I have to pick between Forest of Secret and Life, I'll remain stuck in-between. Both, just as DaebakGrits mentioned, gave social commentaries on delicate matters of the society, and corporate world. So yes, the scripts were on point. If I'll go with his performance, I'll go with Life. What's the reason? Nothing much exactly. Gu Seung-hye was a powerful human yet ordinary when he takes off his corporate suit, coupled with a good bedside manner with his family. That kinda sets him differently from his other performances that I've seen.

Forest of Secrets 1 and 2. After 4 viewings Hwang Si-mok has become a familiar friend. There's something both mysterious and reassuring about his frozen emotions. I'm sure a lot of the depth of the character is due to the wonderful performance by Jo Seung-woo.

I really liked him in God’s Gift—14 Days, but the end was so unfair >_<

So I vote for Forest of Secrets 2. I prefered the second season.

I can’t put Life up there because Lee Dong wook was woefully miscast as the second lead. He is a okay actor, but was too much of the lightweight with the cast hired for the series. Yeah, he stuck out for all the wrong reasons.

I've only seen him in Forest of Secrets and God's Gift - 14 Days, and still I hate to just pick one, those are two of my favorite shows. I actually didn't mind the ending of God's Gift that much, but given that Forest of Secrets had not just a satisfying but awesome ending, no contest.

Choosing one JSW role is like choosing the best hitter on USA's WBC line-up. A buffet of superlatives, but c'mon, Mike Trout is Mike Trout and Hwang Shi-mok is...perfect.

As a self-claimer fan of Cho Seung Woo, I have watched all his dramas. Some are my favorites, some I enjoy, while other I watched only to satisfy my thirst for his performance (STM, just can't wrap my head around the theme). While Forest of Secrets (both seasons are equally mind-blowing in their own way) is obviously the best out of all in terms of best drama (writing, acting, and editing), but as characters, I'd pick Life anytime of the day. Gu Seung Hyo is the man. He is the best president I've seen in Kdramas. He has good personality as well. I'd rewatch the drama just too see him light up my day with his work ethic and his love for people he cares about.

Oh, this is tough.

Despite God's Gift's infuriating ending, that drama was a very memorable introduction to the wonder of Jo Seng-woo for me. Added to that his adorable interaction with Lee Bo-young's daughter and the warm satoori his character used. There's also the superb Forest of Secrets series where he set a new standard about acting as an emotionally distant character.

But if I have to choose one ultimate role, it would be Life. His Gu Seung-hyo is a very memorable character. And it was exciting to see Jo Seung-woo flexing his acting chops to bring this antihero character to life and somehow managed to make him both complicatedly human and understandable despite his more hateful choices.

*If I had to, it'd be hard to choose between FoS (1 AND 2) and Life. But I think the general gravitation towards those choices is also an expression of preference for Lee Soo-yeon and her absolutely fine writing. I'd like to pick her too, please. Thank you very much.

Forest of Secrets.

One of the greatest dramas, period.

This should have been the blueprint for any drama coming out of Korea going forward and has not. The drama will always be the exception and not the norm.

This is tough!

However, with the other Beanies’ deliberations, my choice is:
* Forest of Secrets 1 and 2 as greatest kdramas of all times (together with My Ajusshi) underpinned by a top notch script at world class standard
* Life as the most impressive acting piece of Jo Seung-woo for making a non-likeable character likeable. Gu is grey but black-and-white at the same time. A ruthless CEO during daytime but mommy boy by night.
