Would You Rather #3

In dramaland, leading ladies often find themselves torn between the love of two equally attractive men — a choice none of us would want to make! But what if you did have to pick between the frustrating lawyer and the adorkable police officer? In this weekly feature, we ask you to make the difficult decisions — and we aren’t limiting our options to dreamy oppas.

Vote via the poll and feel free to use the comments to explain exactly how you were able to choose! So, Beanies:

WOULD YOU RATHER #2: RESULTS

Last week, the options were to either die of embarrassment or risk expiring for realz at the hands — er, tires — of the proverbial Truck of Doom. For most, this was (once again) a no-brainer. An overwhelming 70% of responders chose to show off their dance moves (and their underwear) to their crush, and I’m absolutely loving all the confidence displayed by our Beanies! Especially @eazal, who trusts that her sense of humor is strong enough turn an awkward situation into a dance party. Considering my dance moves look borrowed from one of those wacky-wavy arm guys, I kind of wonder if I’m better off staring down the Truck of Doom…

I’m not the only one to ponder the survivability of an encounter with a Truck of Doom, upon second thought. 30% of you, like @linarrick, would weigh your chances with the Truck of Doom if it meant saving yourself from a lifetime of looking back and cringing about that time your crush saw you in your undies. Embarrassment aside, though, if we’re talking about a K-drama Truck of Doom, as @hacja pointed out, then there might actually be a sexy grim reaper or alien from another planet to save you — and, more importantly, fall in love with you — after you survive the near death experience. That sounds nice. Like, really, really nice, but if we’re talking about real-world options here, then I like @kurama’s proverb: Ridicule does not kill but Truck of Doom does.

Either way, the one thing I think we can agree on is that I need to make these polls harder. (Challenge accepted. 😈)

One good thing about amnesia -- kdrama plots would always seem fresh and original :) Also it would end the embarrassment of being caught in the underwear dance last week.

While face blindness might make things even more confusing if we can't even see the difference between the ML and 2ML.

No face blindness but I sometimes do have that problem between ML and 2ML. Forget when it’s a bunch of bearded State Councilors all wearing the same dress.

This one was even easier, because I have already been struggling with remembering people's faces all my life lol))) My case is very mild though - I just have a problem with overall picture but good at recalling minor details, and it's all fine once I meet the person enough times. I also doubt it's an actual medical issue, rather my brain simply refuses to bother with something so insignificant like people and their appearances when I can stock it up with more interesting things like texts and music))) My reading memory is really great, nearly borderline photographic, especially when I was still young and fresh-braincelled lol. It got WAY harder to remember things I'm not that into with age *sigh* But it's fine, I never wanted to be kdrama level of geeenius anyway... ok, maybe just a little bit)))

Amnesia actually doesn't sound all that scary as long as I remember important things like my real personality, intelligence and core relationships with people around me. Details can always be investigated later. I do afraid that amnesia will make me even less of a pleasant person to be around though, because I'd be VERY wary of everyone and doubtful and nitpicky over anything they do and say. It'll also mean I'll have to do enormous (for me as INTJ) effort at communicating with others... omg, even thinking about it is TIRING! Prosopagnosia for the win!

OKay, but is it between ACTUAL amnesia (of which there are many kinds) and ACTUAL face blindness, or is it between the Kdrama versions, the first of which never lasts, and the second of which is is a made up version of the ailment for the sake of the show... lmao

You bring up an important distinction that needs to be made... real amnesia vs Kdrama amnesia. this could affect the outcome of my answer...lol

Does face blindness mean I can’t see my beloved kdramas???
And how long is the amnesia?
One night? A few years? Or literally all my memories being erased so I don’t who I am?

History shows that with amnesia you end up fake-married to your soulmate while inheriting your doppelganger's fortune so I vote for that.

Also amnesia usually means *you* are the chaebol or someone important so I voted for that

I suppose either would be considered devastating circumstances but the reason I picked face blindness was because it felt more managable? Haha
Like once you got used to your new circumstances, you would develop heighten senses and observational skills as well it might take away some of the (un)conscious bias a person might have based on how a person looks (or at least how their face looks). I know there's definite benefits of recognizing faces such as safety but yeah, that's what I picked haha

Amnesia is also managable and honestly I could totally see the appeal of forgetting things haha

These choices were a little harder haha (and now I feel like watching something with an amnesia plot haha any suggestions?)

I think both has their disadvantages and it would be a litmus test for trusting people.

Amnesia is backed by more positive data (aka kdramas). I blindly choose that 😇

Definitely amnesia! If the face blindness is like Lee Min-ki's in The Beauty Inside then I'll never be able to enjoy a k-drama again 😱.

Amnesia on the other hand rarely has such grave consequences in k-dramas. It's just a side-effect of a capitalist society 😂. I'll probably bump into the LOML and live happily ever after 💃.

To suffer from face blindness is an opportunity to train my ears to recognize people.
But unlike amnesia, I won't be forgetting a part of my world if not everything prior to amnesia. Unless I needed to restart my life but then I would I know I needed a restart after amnesia, I'll just move forward like that. I can't take that risk.

I need to see people's facial expressions when their talking to me otherwise I feel anxious.

Amnesia would erase some good memories but also really bad ones, and in a few months I would be back to normal. I could even rewatch some dramas I don't remember and enjoy it like it was the first time.

So: amnesia.

To me personally face blindness seem scary. Just the thought of not recognizing people - both close ones and dangerous ones - just sets me on the edge.
A human factory reset doesn't seem that bad in comparison. At least all the bad memories are also gone, right? 🤷

I think I would handle face-blindness okay. Obviously it wouldn't be great, but I'd much rather have that than forget my relationships with everyone important to me. Plus, do you know how many kdrama and kmovie people with amnesia turn out to have been manipulated and used? There is literally a drama coming out about this soon! Even the funny and lighthearted ones get lied to (see DO, above). Hard pass. Whereas face-blindness I could manage with a friendly wearable AI and/or nametags.

Getting saddled with prosopagnosia on top of my already existent need for thick glasses would feel like an insult from life itself. I'd rather try my luck with amnesia. At least the k-drama version always ensure my way towards eventual happy ending (as long as I don't take the wrong turn into the tragic melodrama land).

I am already bad at remembering names but adding face blindness to the mix would be terrible. Amnesia can be temporary, right?

I really don't like the amnesia trope in K-dramas. It was a terrible drag on AoS 2 which totally changed Naksu into an infatuated school girl instead of the expected second arc of Uk and Naksu battling the world to survive.

I went the opposite way. I've always been so bad at remembering names, and sometimes I worry that I'll hurt someones feelings because I can't, for the life of me, remember their name. If I had face blindness it would be a good excuse to say, "Who is this?", they would then tell me their name and I could just blame it all on the face blindness, and now no one feels forgotten or dismissed, and I don't feel guilty. Win-win...lol

I picked face blindness, because I know someone who has it in real life and I've seen her compensate for it. Amnesia sounds really scary.

A lot of dramaland ailments that seem uncommon are actually pretty common and unglamorous. Faceblindness isn't the result of trauma. It does seem to be hereditary, though.

One of the first dramas I watched, Stranger, had a lead character with hyperacusis. Of course in that drama, he has to have a lobotomy for the hyperacusis. Most people with hyperacusis do not, um, do that. I loved that drama but I also thought it was hilarious that they had to come up with such a far-fetched reason for the character to be unemotional. (It did provide many moments of "your feelings are trying to get in touch with you.")

I'm going to work with the totally unscientific premise that my amnesia will erase certain memories from a past chunk of my life (they always seem to remember basics, like dressing oneself and eating, sleeping, life generalities) and choose that over not being able to recognize literally anybody. I'll re-learn who the loved ones are and why, that's my belief and I'm sticking to it.

I'm sooo bad at remembering people's faces and names. I've met people socially about 5 times and still I introduced myself as the first time.
I use close friends to be my backup hard drive for others at parties and such.
The worst thing is that everyone remembers me. We talked once 5 years ago in a group gathering? They remember. Is like a súper power I don't have.
Any other silly fact, etched in my memories forever.

This! Sometimes when I meet a new client and they've literally just introduced themselves moments before, but I of course can't remember their name, I'll ask them how they spell it.

Good tip but not really helpful when they have a common easy to spell name 😆
Is it weird that i can remember the company’s name rather than the person?

I was going to say, "see, ordinary people get face blindness too," but then you mentioned that everyone remembers meeting you. Maybe you are actually really cool, and not ordinary at all! 🥰 The fact that you rely on close friends to help you says you must be a warm person. Either that or you always wear the same hat...

I'm laughing at the fact that prosopagnosia is losing here, since I have it myself. A mild-ish version, but still. It's not that bad... you get really good at recognizing voices and mannerisms and such. Plus! During the Covid mask mandates I was already one up on people, since I'd been differentiating 'masked' people my entire life :D I do find the K-drama versions of it pretty hilarious though. Like My Holo Love... it's not like faces are blurry, they just look vaguely same-ish.

Though it can be embarrassing when you run into people you know out of context... I have coworkers like 'I saw you at such and such place and you totally ignored me!' and I have to explain that actually I didn't see them. Literally. Also being a fan of saguek dramas... you know those scenes with arguing ministers? For me it's like I'm watching the same actor in the same outfit, and I have to try to figure out which is which based on where in the room they're standing... i love political scheming but not knowing who's who most of the time kinda ruins it :D

Amnesia on the other hand sounds pretty frightening. No being able to remember your loved ones, your past, etc... yikes!

But... I feel like face blindness is so much easier to live with. You can just ask all your friends/relatives to state their name or wear little color coded bracelets when you meet up so you can recognize them.

If you have amnesia, I feel like you open yourself up to all sorts of sketchy serial killer situations. I've watched this movie before- it was scary!

Yup! Or someone convinces you that you were a serial killer/psychopath! And you have people convincing you were married to them. It only works when your fake fiance/husband is a hot guy in a rom-com. Even then, he may turn you into a housekeeper-nanny/wife in the beginning part of the series where you both dislike each other (Fantasy Couple).

Not sure what I would see with face-blindness. It would be sort of creepy to see blank faces, like with the ML in Secret Life of my Secretary. But less stressful than amnesia!
