[Drama catnip] K-drama kisses

No judgement, right? That’s what we agreed! So, I’m here to talk about my personal catnip: K-drama kisses. One thing I love about them is that there’s so much variety. They can quicken your pulse and take your breath away or make you squeal and squee or even laugh or cry. In dramaland, you never know exactly how or when a kiss will occur — or how kooky it will be when it finally does.

Dramas work hard to keep the kiss scenes interesting and entertaining, which has led to a lot of tropes that I personally love. In fact, as I started to think about my favorite K-drama kisses, I realized that it’s these tropes, or types, that give them their distinct drama flair – and make me distinctly crazy about them. Making a short list was no easy feat, but luckily I’m organized when it comes to my catnip.

[Drama catnip] K-drama kisses

Let’s start with the trip-and-fall kiss. Is there anything more iconic — more utterly K-drama — than this type of lip lock? It’s been done a million times, in a million ways, and it still sends a zip of energy through me every time I see it. And, there’s nothing better than when it actually has a bearing on the plot! (Which, let’s be honest, is usually not the case.)

That’s why Kiss Sixth Sense is among my favorites in the trip-and-fall category. When our heroine lands atop our hero for that accidental mash of the mouths, it sets off the spark that starts our story. This leads down the path to superpowers, secret office dating, and, best of all, more catnip kisses!

(Note: This shouldn’t be confused with its teasing cousin the trip-and-fall “almost kiss.” Landing in an awkward stare doesn’t count!)

[Drama catnip] K-drama kisses

Moving on, let’s talk about the camera-stop kiss. Does this still happen? It’s when the leads put their lips together and then the camera freezes into a still, catching them from multiple angles, but without any movement from the actors. It’s the least offensive way to capture a kiss I could imagine, and yet, sometimes it’s still spicy.

I remember the first time I saw Minho on screen, in the drama Because It’s the First Time, where he shares a kiss with Jung Yoo-jin (as the experienced noona). Granted I’m a sucker for all things noona romance, but something about the awkwardness of this scene actually heightened its hotness. (Not sure it’s the effect the camera stop was meant to have.)

[Drama catnip] K-drama kisses

In categories that require less explanation, there’s the upside-down kiss — which I think Answer Me 1988 wins the iconic award for — and the 9th-to-11th-episode first kiss that comes once (and usually not again). In this latter category, Flower Boy Ramyun Shop will always have my heart with that kiss by the motorcycle in Episode 11. The tension was so well built by that point, I remember not squealing, but screaming, the first time I saw it.

In more recent dramas, we’ve run into the asking-for-permission kiss (which I’m a big fan of) and I love that scene in Record of Youth where Park Bo-gum asks Park So-dam if he can kiss her — and she says he’s always allowed. (Yeah, he’d only need to ask me once too.)

Another favorite is the cozy kiss, and Run On is my absolute top in that department. The scene where Im Si-wan is nestled up with Shin Sae-kyung in her bed, which itself is tucked into a cozy book-filled corner, and they’re both wearing comfy clothes — I love every single thing about that scene. It has the feeling of a rainy day when you decide to just stay inside where it’s warm (except, in this case, it has the bonus of kissing under the covers). Also, the 2F song that’s playing as they cuddle up adds to the overall loveliness (the lyrics go: “I’m sorry but I need to love you right now.” – Wow, wow, wow.)

One kiss I’m usually not a fan of is the drunken kiss — though it’s certainly a recurring theme. But I can think of an occasion where it won my heart, and that’s in True Beauty. Cha Eun-woo does such an amazingly funny job as the drunk boyfriend — and it seems like he mostly sleeps it off before the kissing begins. So, in this case, I actually like it.

Although I’ve only seen it in one drama, I have to mention the knee-pull kiss. Yes, I’m talking about Fight My Way. When Park Seo-joon pulled Kim Ji-won prostrate (by grabbing below her bent knees), I felt like I got an education. The kiss that follows is, for sure, overshadowed by that slick move. (And if any more of these exist in the world, send the drama names my way!)

[Drama catnip] K-drama kisses

Another one-of-a-kind kiss is the animated one that happens in Yumi’s Cells 2. Sure, I could count this as a car kiss between Yumi and Bobby, but that wouldn’t do justice to the (literal) tongue tango that’s happening in their heads. This one hits all the marks, from funny to dig your fingers into your couch cushions.

A new type for me last year was the teaching kiss, which happened in Extraordinary Attorney Woo. All this time I thought instructing someone in this area would be awkward. Turns out I just needed to see Park Eun-bin and Kang Tae-oh in the student/teacher roles and, voila, instant catnip.

On the other end of the innocence spectrum, of all the illicit kisses I can think of (and there are many!), The Interest of Love recently upped the ante with that kiss on the ice rink. It may have been bad of them, but it was good for the rest of us.

I suppose kisses in the rain are more cliché than trope at this point, and they’re not my most loved, but Our Beloved Summer did a nice rendition. And so did Splish Splash Love (although that was in the rain, on the beach, with a king, while time traveling, which is pretty specific, so I’ll leave it in the rain category).

Crying kisses are also not among my favorites but it depends on why they’re crying. I do love that scene in Just Between Lovers when Junho and Won Jin-ah are talking about finally moving forward with their lives — she’s crying, it’s snowing, they’re kissing — and it’s totally beautiful. It’s almost like they’re kissing away all the pain of the past.

[Drama catnip] K-drama kisses

Another type is the interrupted kiss, which could be defined in a lot of ways, but I like it when the characters are bothered by something that’s not other people. In Sunbae Don’t Put on That Lipstick, Rowoon and Won Jin-ah (again! She gets all the good ones!) have their morning kisses interrupted by their growling stomachs. This leads to making breakfast together — and there’s nothing better than kisses and cooking.

Speaking of which, kitchen kisses are among the best! And to take it up a notch, the restaurant kitchen in Greasy Melo had some amazing ones. My favorite is when Jung Ryeo-won jumps on Junho and… I feel like this needs no further explanation.

A variation of this is in the office kitchen (where canteen meets clandestine) and a great example is in Search WWW. Jang Ki-yong’s co-workers think he’s just making coffee by himself. Thankfully we get to see that he’s not alone and there’s some sneaky business going on in there.

I could go on forever, but I’ll round out my spiel with fun kisses — those that are fun for the characters and those that are fun for us.

In the former category, nothing beats Something in the Rain. Whenever I think back on this drama, the images that come to mind are of the main couple being playful. They’re always laughing, making faces at each other, and having a good time (as they careen from one room to the next). While this drama earns points for having a lot of kissing, it’s the joyfulness of all those kisses that I love.

In the latter category, we have the kisses that make us laugh. One drama I love for how funny the kiss scenes are is Witch’s Romance. Here’s another show that doesn’t hold back and is packed full of hilariously hot moments. It’s got all kinds of kisses: against the wall, on the bed, on the floor, and overtop beer cans. There’s at least one kiss here for everybody, and I guarantee each one will make you smile. Or, if you’re like me, keep you coming back for more catnip.

I love this article, thanks @dramaddictally !

Kissing scenes often are the pic of the love story, usually happening around the 8th episode. So they are important!

I'm happy that Kdrama kinda gave up the accidental kiss, Cdramas are using all of them...

There are so many kissing scenes coming to mind, it's not possible to list them.

I think it's important when the actors/characters look confortable and not awkward neither shy.

Ooh. I love, love, love this post. I've never really thought of all the categories of Kdrama kisses before, but reading your post @dramaddictally, has got me thinking of Kdrama kiss categories I know and love (and those I don't).

I love Kdrama kisses that are intentional on the part of both leads. Not that one person kisses the other, startling them, but that they both have an unspoken agreement of what's about to happen.

One Kdrama kiss I really, really, really hate is the sleeping kiss, where one character kisses a sleeping character. It's creepy, and it irks me so much.

This was so fun to read! Two that I've loved:

The dam-breaking kiss - when two characters have been kept apart by external or internal factors and finally come together when their understanding changes and just go for it. These kisses always feel like they really push the plot along, and there is a sense of relief that something they've been keeping locked down can finally flow. Alchemy of Souls Part 1 did this really well when Mu-deok decided not to kill everyone (hahaha) and Part 2 when Bu-yeon turns off Uk's lantern. Oh Hae-young Again's (though it's not my favorite drama) famous kiss against the wall is also a good example.

The kiss that goes on just a bit longer than you expect - These kisses are beautiful, and intimate, and make you feel like maybe you should give them some privacy, but in the best way. The kiss in Good Job did this recently, but I also think the one in Her Private Life when ML first comes clean about liking FL for real.

I forgot to say! The asking-for-permission kiss can be so so amazing. When Lee Joon-ho asked Kim Je-hee if it was alright if he kissed her in Prison Playbook, it was one of the swooniest things I've ever seen. Not to mention that she is a sexual assault survivor, so I really appreciated his (and the drama writer's) making sure that she was comfortable with him and with the situation.

I absolutely love this post!!!
As someone who loves kiss scenes and love the anticipation and wait leading to the kiss, I loved how you passionately dissect kisses!
Kudos to you!!

Not a kdrama, but one my recent absolutely favorite kisses was in the Thai drama ‘Bad Buddy’!

I loved the recent skate rink kiss in Interest of love! Phew. Fanning myself.

Her private Life - Ryan removing his watch and that kiss was so hot!!

LJW search WWW kiss was amazing too! Those killer jaws were doing a fine job!

And worst kiss has to be the Chinese drama ‘A little thing called first love’. Lol. Those who have seen it know what I am talking about. After the slow motion of the lips moving together for more than a minute or 5, we had balloons fly in!! We had balloons to hide the kiss. 😂

Kisses are my catnip too, more so the more realistic they are. I find the whole no movement kiss to be a huge letdown after the initial thrill, and it took some getting used to when I first started watching dramas.

One of my favorite kisses is the first kiss in Her Private Life, cause that kissing session lasted a while LOL.

I think another catnip that goes hand-in-hand with this one is when a couple actually acts like a couple - meaning the kisses and skinship don't stop once we get that first kiss. See Healer, Her Private Life, and a few others for examples.

The top two kisses in kdrama land for me are: Chicago Typewriter and Mr. Queen. Both fit the trope of kissing to escape danger which I love. One is filled with the pathos of love that can never be expressed except in that moment and the other is hilarious. Both were extremely hot.

There’s another memorable kiss to avoid danger in Crash Landing on You, but this one’s more funny than steamy. It’s the scene where someone is about to discover Jeong-Hyeok and Se-Ri hiding in the hold of a ship. JH remembers Ju-Meok telling him about the K-drama method of grabbing the woman and kissing her to avoid getting caught. The strategy actually works, but the unexpected smooch leaves Se-Ri I hopping mad!

I like this one, so many actually pleasant moments come to mind))) Generally my standard is pretty simple - the hotter the better, and FL MUST, you know, actively participate in the process instead of freezing in horror/blinking like a broken android/making pained face while clenching her fists as if that's her dentist's instruments all over her mouth and not cute guy's lips.

I also - gasp! - don't mind forced kisses all that much. Fiction is not the real life and works by different laws, including the "whatever fuels the conflict that plot needs", and this is old as dirt kind of conflict-fueling trope that survived for so long exactly due to its effectiveness. That one downright violent example from Another Oh Hae Young comes to mind (I see it carved itself in many people's memory heh). Or terribly edited but still very impressive handcuff one from Me Too Flower (I won't advise anyone to watch the drama, esp the crappy latter half, but if you ever thought of Yoon Shi Yoon as too sweet for your liking... check this one scene out and think again).

And then there's the touching category that goes beyond simple scorching physicality. You can pretty much guess what title I'll say next - Happiness, for course))) While this one was nothing to write home about technically or passion-wise, it was INSANELY cathartic nonetheless. That's how you do a satisfying climax to your fictional love story. Mr Queen had some epic examples from both categories, including that moment from their most famous - or infamous? - kiss scene where leads slowed down for a moment and some feels other than lust suddenly to them both entered the chat. My MOST favorite one is still the tiptoe kiss from Queen Inhyun's Man. Nearly 11 years after and still unrivaled in all aspects. The one from director's cut of finale didn't hurt either^^

The Another Oh Hae Young kiss was a very nuanced one imho. The violence originally came from the fl, not the ml. She did everything in her power to make him crack, and when she finally hit him that hard, he turned around and kissed her. It looked forced, but it was obvious from the beginning that she was making him do it.

You're right. Ah, the great times, that drama had so much entertaining messiness in it)))

MTF one was along the lines too actually - ML did it to prove his feelings for FL. And avoid being arrested by her over some misunderstanding. Not the most universal method of getting cops off your back but still very fun)))

Forgot to mention Live Up To Your Name acupuncture kiss - great one too, very hot and creative. I'm guilty of always sidelining this drama/OTP because I HATE FL character (not actress), which tampered my enjoyment of the show a lot, but it's worth the praise anyway.

3. One of my hated dramas Melting me softly, but had one of the best kiss scene, the shower scene. It was hot and sizzling.

So many great kdrama kisses. We have some champion kissers listed here. The kiss in healer on the rooftop, when he covers her eyes is unique, don't see that too often. As mentioned above the kisses in episode 8 and onward. I know one is coming when I look at the episode count. Great write up, but I want to take a second to appreciate the champion kdrama kissers.

Park Seo Joon
Park Min Young
Yoo Yeong Sook
Ji Chang Wook

Angry Kiss: This one can be tricky, because it needs to be clear that even though the leads are frustrated and upset in the moment, they still *want* to kiss each other. Oh Hae Young--the first kiss, after she hits him with her purse--is the best angry kiss. For a long time, it was also one of the first "real" kisses I saw in a drama--i.e. it looked like a real kiss, not two people pressing their lips together and counting to 10.

Searching Kiss: This occurs when the leads start kissing, then stop and silently seek some kind of non-verbal encouragement or agreement that they should keep kissing. The best example of this type for me is the kiss in the hallway in "Mr. Queen." For the first time, both the King and Queen seem equally enthralled with each other, and yet vulnerable, too.

Golden Glow Kiss: This is when the director goes a little nuts with the lighting in the scene and yet, it works. I have two great examples of this type: "Romantic Dr. Kim" (I believe it's in the first episode when the ML confesses) and "You Are My Spring" (on the rooftop).

I also agree about "Witch's Romance"--I love the passion and the humor of the early sequence where the two of them go at it until the FL realizes the ML is a decade younger than her.

Recently, I really liked the street kiss the leads shared in "At Your Service" and all the deeply felt, extended kisses in AoS, II.

My first kdrama kisses were the frozen wide-eyed surprise variety, so everything else has been an improvement, although I have trouble accepting the improbable precision of the fall down kiss. At least half the time there should lips on nose or lips on eyeball.

Lot of good ones mentioned by others, but my favorite recent kiss is Gaus.

I've been watching kdramas since 2004/2005. I sort of miss the spinning cameras of the early 2000s kdrama/kmovie kisses. So dramatic!

The fall down kisses start to annoy me after smartphones/ipads became more ubiquitous. It hurts when I accidentally drop them on my face when reading/watching in bed. Nose hurts. Lips and teeth hurt. I can't imagine having an entire human head drop on my face like that.

I've never thought about the kisses in dramas. Maybe it's because I'm American, kisses in Kdramas, no matter how "steamy", always seemed kinda tame or chaste. I have seen some lists that mentioned good Kdrama kissers and I think some of the people mentioned here were also on those lists.

I don't know if it was the kisses themselves or the situations but these are the kisses that made me go "damn, okay, wow" haha
- Gu Family Book. When they finally kissed in the forest after Kang Chi finally declared his feelings for Yeowool, saying that she was his person. I thought the declaration was so sweet but then when they kissed, it was like ALL the tension and touches had finally reached a climax. I liked the way they clutched each other, I liked the Kang Chi kinked his eyebrow after that first kiss which kinda felt like a challenge to do it again which Yeowool accepted because then she initiated their 2nd mini makeout.
- Alchemy of Souls part 2. Jang Uk and Buyeon are finally on the same page and again the woman is just as aggressive & assertive in their making out.
- Her Private Life. Ryan and Deok Mi were outside but kinda hidden. It feels so exciting haha. Like any moment they could be caught but they are just so into each other and it felt kinda immature and mature at the same time (if that makes sense) haha

I also liked The Law Cafe after Jeong Ho finally admitted his feelings and they made out in his loft and he picked her up leading her to straddle him.
The first kiss in W: Two World is memorable to me because of how out of the blue it was to him haha. The way he's still trying to process why she slapped him for buying her clothes only for her to stomp back over to kiss him, just utterly confusing him.

I like it when two of them don't have the intention of kissing. They just want to hide or pretend, and then suddenly one of them starts to do real intense kissing. It always works for me. The best examples that comes to my mind are Chicago Typewriter and Marriage not
Dating.
Furthermore the one kind that I really hate is accidental kiss, especially trip and fall.

Thanks so much for this post. Between the Noona Romance post from about a week ago and this post, I've been able to add some dramas to my watch list! I'm going to add a category:

The Controversial (I'm not sure that was OK) kiss:
Que Sera Sera: When the ML/FL kiss outside the hotel after attempted assault. Shocking by not only k-drama standards, but western dramas as well. A great drama though with one of the best teaching kiss scenes I've seen (elevator).

Secret Love Affair: I have one episode left to watch---I found this drama though the Noona post of a week ago, and I'm so happy I found it. What a great drama. The first kiss in the garage, I was not sure that was an OK kiss. It was surprising and shocking--age, power, consent and adultery.

Others have mentioned Another Oh Hae Young which would fit this controversial kiss category as well! Flower Boy Ramen Shop remains one of my favorite kiss scenes, as well as favorite dramas. I never realized that part of that reason was the build up or pacing of the drama. That makes sense to me now. I think it counts as a controversial kiss given the age. I think dramas need to challenge and push boundaries a bit, otherwise they can be quite mundane. So, I'm glad these dramas were had challenging kiss scenes. It made for engaging watches!

So glad you are loving SLA! The garage kiss was jolting! I didn't expect it to happen. not so soon in the drama. Everything felt just so wrong or even confusing and scary for what will follow. But I did like how real and raw it was. It wasn't beautiful but it was just raw.

Yes, raw. I was just shocked, it seemed pretty brazen and confident on his part and I wasn't sure it was reciprocated. I think the older dramas had a much more raw feeling (in a good way). I am holding off watching the last episode because I hate to end dramas that were really good.

I started an older drama I had not watched before--All About My Romance. It starts off with an accidental kiss by the FL onto the ML's bare chest in the 1st episode, when they first meet. (I haven't seen this before.) The ML finds himself becoming attracted to her, and can't get the feeling of her lips against his chest off of his mind. I'm enjoying this one so far.

My favorite k-drama kisses:

The “teaching” kiss in Because This Is My First Life. The dazed look on Ji-Ho’s face after the first kiss, and then her asking him to repeat the lesson!

All the kisses in 1% of Something (2016 version), but especially the one against the wall that goes on and on and on…

And speaking of against-the-wall kisses, there’s the one in Secretary Kim that leads from there to the bedroom.

This was a great post thanks @dramaddictally. I wasn’t going to add a comment because much as I love the build up, once the kiss starts if they drag it out with too many camera angles, falling petals or they get soaked in a random rain shower I am the rare person who starts fast forwarding. I just don’t need to see the steaminess through to its end to appreciate it.
I loved the denied first kiss in Reply 1988, the Yumi’s cells tango was funny but I even had to forward that. Special mention goes to Something in the rain for spot on realistic in the early stages of love kisses.

Love this! One kiss that I'd add to the list is the "When you're ready" kiss. Best example of this I can think of is in PINOCCHIO. They just admitted their ongoing feelings for each other, and FL is clearly reeling a bit. ML goes in for the kiss, but FL puts her hand over her mouth. ML is just all "I can work with this," and sweetly kisses her hand, then pulls back and makes eye contact, giving a very clear "You're call what happens next." And then she removes her hand and they go in for the real thing. Naturally, this all happens in the middle of an intersection, which is one of my least favorite kiss tropes. But I'll forgive it if only for the amount of eye-conversation that happens throughout that interactions. They're constantly checking in with each other, and you can see the moment of giving consent and the moment of realization and all the little moments inbetween.

I also apparently have a weird thing for kisses involving hats, because three different hat-essential kisses came to mind. 1) HEALER, the beanie kiss (which is strangely made more spicy by the fact that her eyes are covered throughout the interaction), 2) 25, 21, the famous hat kiss itself, and 3) the kiss in SUNGKYUNKWAN SCANDAL, in which the rims of the hats get in the way until ML slowly unlaces her hat. So I guess I have a type?

Big clap to @dramaddictally for bringing up this catnip. While we're at it, I'd like to mention some of my favourites;

♤ It's ok to not be ok's birthday kiss scene. It held so many raw emotions & passion along with the subtle noises in the background. It was just a kiss but gave butterflies of a whole make out session 🙈

♤ Our beloved summer had the best kiss spectrum imo. From being innocent teenagers to growing into mature adults, their kiss patterns changed. Also, the one in the rain after reuniting was one of the most aesthetic kisses periodt.

♤ Amongst the mature & realistic trope, I loved Yumi's cells S2's ones. No fairytalish kisses but equally full of passion.

& I absolutely love that you mentioned the run on's kiss in the cozy category. I was wondering myself why I liked it so much & now I got the answer.

Also, loved that you mentioned the ice rink kiss of interest of love. YYS doesn't joke around when he kisses his girl 😉

- Bride of Habaek: stairs kiss. Just one word: hot.
- Another Miss Oh: I didn't like that drama but I can't forget the kiss everybody is talking about.
- Live Up to your name: acupuncture kiss is unforgettable.
- Alchemy of Souls 2. The "at last!" kind of kiss.
- Weightlifting Fairy: first kiss.
- Hospital Playlist 2: rain+car+kiss.
- Vivid romance: rooftop kiss.
- Start-Up: first kiss (sunset).
- Into the ring: several kisses.
- Yumi's cells 1 & 2.
- Secret Garden: long kiss in the Christmas party.
- Clean with passion for now: not a very good drama but some kisses were really passionated.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some others. I'll keep reading your favorite ones :)

Does the Bread Kiss in Pinocchio count? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I know it's imaginary but I loved it!

Some of my favorites include the under the tree kiss in You Drive Me Crazy, the piano kiss in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, the I love you kiss in Our Beloved Summer, the lights off kiss in She Was Pretty and the welcome back from Quebec kiss in Goblin

my top 2 drama kisses:

1. 1% of Something - "I tried so hard not to eat alive, but I don't think I can resist anymore." my oh my, let me call the fire department bc I need a huge water tank with a hose attached.
2. Her Private Life - The confession scene in the workroom... whoa. Those two went all in for that kiss. Time to jump into the nearest cold puddle or whatever I can find.

I have many other fav kisses, too. Will have to add them here when I have time.

also, no shame, i keep track of kisses in the dramas i watch and have a list on mydramalist and viki of them. helps me (and others) decide what to watch or rewatch when in the mood. so very helpful.
