Twenty Five Twenty One: Episodes 13-14
by mistyisles
Brace yourselves and grab some tissues – the tears are about to hit full-force. But, in true Twenty Five Twenty One fashion, it’s not quite for the reason you might expect, and it comes in a poignant mix of joy and sorrow.
EPISODES 13-14 WEECAP
As we’ve come to expect, this week runs the gamut from cute, funny friend hijinks to heartrending growing pains, starting off just after Hee-do kisses Yi-jin at the stroke of midnight. Yi-jin… doesn’t really respond. Instead, he changes the subject and awkwardly offers to walk her home.
Heartbroken, Hee-do keeps quiet until they reach her house. But she can’t bear to leave it at that – after all, he was the one who said he loved her first. In a roundabout way, Yi-jin explains that the way he loves her is more of a wanting-to-take-care-of-her thing instead of a romantic thing.
However, Yi-jin seems to be trying to convince himself of this as much as he is trying to convince her. Even ignoring their age gap, he’s continually reminded that having too close of a friendship – let alone anything else – with an athlete he’s assigned to report on is a bad idea to say the least.
So, he pushes her away as much as he can. But he can’t help watching from a distance and grinning proudly when she handles a fencing loss (and her opponent’s taunting) with true sportsmanship, or getting all jealous when she calls another fencer “oppa.”
One night while drunk, he calls Hee-do and cries that he’s wavering even though he knows he shouldn’t. Fortunately (or unfortunately?), he’s actually called Ji-woong, who greatly enjoys teasing him about it the next day.
Meanwhile, Hee-do tries to move on with her life. She and Yoo-rim compete in their final tournament as highschoolers, finishing with a moving team victory despite individual losses. But no matter how Hee-do and Yi-jin try to avoid each other, they’re too accustomed to spending time together to resist each other’s gravitational pull.
And eventually, after ignoring her sad puppy eyes and earnest pleas one too many times, Yi-jin can’t take it anymore. Throwing caution and better judgment to the wind, he comes rushing back outside and kisses her, ready to love her fully and openly, come what may.
But right on the heels of this oh-so-satisfying payoff, Yi-jin’s fear comes true. Just as Coach Yang and Hee-do’s mom warned, he has to deliver a news report that directly hurts someone he cares about. Except, the person he turns public opinion against isn’t Hee-do. It’s Yoo-rim.
Yoo-rim’s father hits another vehicle with his truck, severely injuring the other driver. With no money for a settlement, there’s a good chance he could be sent to prison. The salary Yoo-rim’s set to receive from the Korean national fencing team won’t be enough, either, so she accepts an offer to join Russia’s national team instead, which covers her living costs on top of a better salary.
But that means renouncing her Korean nationality in exchange for Russian citizenship. And that makes her a traitor in the eyes of the public. Especially since it’s obvious she did it for the money.
Yi-jin, the first reporter to learn of her decision, is the first to break the news on air, setting off a storm of outrage against Yoo-rim. It kills him to do it, but he can’t justify showing partiality by not doing it, either. Yoo-rim seems resigned, but Hee-do is appalled.
There’s a powerful scene toward the end of the episode that I think beautifully illustrates Yi-jin and Hee-do’s differing responses: Yi-jin passes by graffiti condemning Yoo-rim as a traitor and, having held his emotions in check all this time, crumbles to the ground, sobbing. Hee-do, on the other hand, shows up with cleaning supplies.
In fact, while Episode 13 was all about Yi-jin and Hee-do’s relationship, Episode 14 focused more on Hee-do and Yoo-rim’s friendship. And I didn’t quite expect it, but I think this episode tipped the balance and made me even more invested in their friendship than I am in the romance.
Hee-do is one of the first people Yoo-rim goes to when she makes her decision, and Hee-do never once doubts her. Rather, she worries for Yoo-rim, knowing exactly what it feels like to have the media shine unfavorably upon her.
She also saves Yoo-rim from a flock of reporters who ambush her at practice. After marching past the reporters like a pro, Hee-do helps Yoo-rim devise a plan to divert attention so they can slip away. Then, when a restaurant owner refuses to serve Yoo-rim, Yoo-rim surprises Hee-do by firmly but calmly standing up for herself – something she says Hee-do taught her.
All this leads up to the inevitable painful goodbyes as Yoo-rim prepares to leave for Russia. And to make things worse, we’re given an ominous glimpse at a future match between Hee-do and Yoo-rim – cold, distant, and tense, with both girls tearing up and avoiding eye contact.
Another arc that plays out this week is Yoo-rim and Ji-woong’s relationship. Not wanting to burden Ji-woong with her problems, Yoo-rim tells him not to wait for her. Ji-woong, however, has no intention of giving her up, and is prepared to work any number of part-time jobs to save up enough to visit her in Russia.
It takes him a while to work up the courage to tell her, but he eventually seizes his very last chance. In a big, dramatic hero moment, he conquers his fear of driving and gets to the airport just in time to grab her in a hug, tell her everything, and give her a goodbye-for-now kiss.
Both the Yi-jin/Hee-do and Yoo-rim/Ji-woong confrontations brought out a point that a lot of drama couples take multiple episodes to realize: pushing someone away “for their own good” is selfish. It robs them of the chance to have an equal say in the decision, and it doesn’t protect them from being hurt – it only hurts them sooner, while removing part of their support system. As Hee-do told Ji-woong, sometimes “selfishly” being honest about your feelings for someone is the most considerate thing you can do.
And finally, we get one small clue about present-day Yi-jin’s whereabouts. The good news: as of 2009, Yi-jin is alive and well. (Knocking on ALL the wood!) Frustrated that Hee-do’s diaries end after Yi-jin kisses her, Min-chae googles their names. No scandals come up, but she does find a 2009 interview between anchor (!) Yi-jin and champion fencer Hee-do, in which they tearily but subtly wish each other well, clearly not having spoken in some time… and Yi-jin congratulates her on her recent marriage.
At this point, I’m expecting a La La Land sort of resolution, where the two find happiness separately while forever treasuring the time they spent together. There was something Yoo-rim said when Hee-do remarked that nothing lasts forever, which I expect will be our big takeaway: what matters is remembering and cherishing that it did happen, and it was beautiful while you had it.

I'm in love with the show, and if A and B or C and D or even E and F end together or not, is not the point. I'm loving the ride, and I've lived enough to know not only first loves are wonderful, all of them are. And besides, the real love story here is the one between YooRim and HeeDo.
Anyway, I have a question, as someone who works in insurances in her corner of the world. Aren't car insurances compulsory in South Korea? In EU you can't drive without an insurance that has unlimited third part liability, so if you cause an accident (even if you are drunk) the third part will get the money, and all the hospital fees covered. It just amazes me how many times I've seen this in dramas: people ruined by compensations. But after all, it is the point of the episode, I guess.
I have to say that episode 14 was by far my favourite so far. I loved seeing YooRim so happy during the dinner with her friends, and then I just cried and cried and cried for the rest of the episode. So unfair to her, and she was so, so brave. Rooting for you, babe.

I was wondering the same. In Switzerland, you need to take a liability insurance if you want a car.
It's like if the family decided how much they need to pay too when the insurances should discuss about it...

This episode drained me more than the Seungwan episode which I didn't think would happen. That episode was all happy tears because I was proud of her but then this was just pure sadness that our Taeyang squad was losing Yurim. Loved the scenes we got with Yurim and Heedo, especially the one where she broke down and cried about not wanting to leave. Man this episode hurt.
The 09 broadcast actually made me happy because I knew there was no way they were together at that point anyways. Just was glad to see them both continue to be supportive each other which is the best part of their relationship.

It may be like the United States where there are different levels of coverage. Google did tell me this:
Customary Liability refers to a common practice in Korea that involves the victim or her/his family seeking additional compensation over and above what the insurance pays. The threat of criminal prosecution is often used since the police and prosecutors will not usually drop the matter until the victim is completely satisfied.
This is basically what we saw happen in the drama.

The US works fairly similarly. If the liability coverage someone has doesn't completely cover bills (most personal policies in the US, at least for my company will have 100,000 USD for their bodily injury liabilty, although a commercial policy, which is what I would expect her father to have for his vehicle, tend to be minimum of 1 million USD) you can be sued for the additional. Your insurance only protects you and responds on your behalf up to the limit of your policy.

Interesting. Thank you! As I said in EU it is unlimited so this would never be the case.

Yoo Rim’s dad was driving the truck so it’s work related. The victim’s family should really be going after the dad’s employer. Unless he’s self employed?

At least in EU, whatever happens while driving a car should be taken care by the car insurance, even if it’s work related. Also, I don’t think Yoorim’s dad is not an employee, so he is a company by itself.

I love every part of this drama that isn't Yi-Jin.
To me, one of the core parts of his personality is his selfishness. Which seems weird right, because some key elements of the story have been him doing things "for other people". But even when he does things "for other people" it's on his terms and because it makes him feel good.
He pulls his brother out of his school "saving" him from being embarrassed or harassed for their father's misdeeds. But as we see, it's not actually what his brother wants, he is never asked if he wants to leave his friends and his life, he's instead "saved" and told he should be grateful to his brother for messing up his already messed up life more.
The whole course of Yi-Jin's interactions with Hee-do are selfish, now, sometimes that ends with him doing something good for her, like being there when he Mom isn't, but it also leads to him repeatedly ignoring her feelings and demanding that everything be on his terms, that he be allowed to act in an obviously romantic way without labeling it. When with the kiss she tries to set terms he rejects her, but then also is jealous and possessive of any interaction with other men.
Then we get to Yu-Rim... he tells himself he's being "impartial", but that's really nonsense, because he only knows about it because he's dating her friend, and acting as her friend. He doesn't know about this as a reporter, instead he's leveraging his personal relationships selfishly to enhance his career at the expense of Hee-do and Yu-Rim, because at his core, all relationships and interactions he has are for his own gain.
I think the show maybe wants us to see this as a parallel for Yu-Rim who makes sacrifices for her family, but it doesn't really track, because Yi-Jin doesn't really seem to make sacrifices, instead he sacrifices others. I guess he has to put off University, but that's so minor, at every step his first thought is himself.

I believe he learned of Yu Rim’s plans when he overheard the National Team staff talking about it.
It is the nature of the news business to have to be “first” to be successful. If YJ had delayed the story, another network/magazine/newspaper would have reported it shortly anyway.

hmm I'll have to watch again, for some reason I had that mixed up. Doesn't really change my view of him, but that is a key plot point difference in terms of degree. I do think the idea that after being wildly unprofessional for months when it was to his benefit, he suddenly flips to "must be professional at all costs" when it's to his benefit even if it involves something his GF is going to see as a betrayal, is still fitting with who he has been, and why the audience should be very glad if HD doesn't end up with him

I hope they'll show us what YJ and YR talked about after she called him Reporter BYJ. I understand the importance of exclusive news to reporters, but at the end of the day, YJ still advanced his career on YR's struggle and that left a bad taste in my mouth. I'd slightly forgive YJ if he at least told her that he'd report her situation before the broadcast.

This! And yes, he emphasizes on having to report on the "exclusive" he had in his later conversation with Heedo about this (if he hadn't been first, he'd have been second to report).

I feel that Yi-Jin acts to protect people, his brother for example who is victimized by bullies.
He is really devastated by having to cover Yurim’s move to Russia and can’t even bring himself to celebrate having the “exclusive” report for his TV station.

Does he though? He never asks his brother what he wants, just decides, his whole thing is that he just does things with little thought as to what anyone else wants. He does those things for himself, to make himself feel better about his own guilt, misgivings etc. His whole "martyr" vibe is so ridiculous, like yeah his rich life of ease went away, but he just wallows in self-pity when he's getting a miracle opportunity and so many people have it worse.
One of the best, most honest scenes in the whole show is when his brother calls him out, because it's a reckoning, and you think that, combined with the miracle job chance is going to turn him into a better man..... and then it just doesn't.

Are we all watching the same drama? Sometimes I think DB is too high brow. I can't believe I'm reading comments about YJ and feel the need to have to defend the male lead of this outstanding drama. We are all coming in from different perspectives I guess. YJ is one of my favorite male leads, I do not think he is toxic at all. He is wonderfully vulnerable, and brilliantly portrayed by NJH.

I think with the very minor exception of Ji-Woong, every male in this drama is either toxic (school administrator, journalist) dead or absent,(Hee-Do's father/presumably husband) loving but incompetent, (Yu-Rim's father) or about to become a failure in some way (Yi-Jin) Its pretty unique in the degree of its female-centeredness!

I was thinking that about Search:WWW too, which I also really like. (Actually, to be honest, so far I kind of like Search:WWW better, but that's just because of a completely personal preference for office centered dramas rather than coming of age dramas.)
But I think what is unique about the female-centeredness of this one is that throughout the show there is actually is a male who is presumably a main protagonist, and so those accustomed to classic romance dramas like myself expect him to emerge as someone of lasting importance or in some way successful. We'll see, but the show could very logically just have him fade away at the end and its main message would remain intact.

I understand you’re coming from, and I would have liked at him the same way as you if only that wasn’t the only way for him to survive.
He isn’t all alone; all of his father’s debts are killing him every minute he’s breathing. He has so little, if any to give. That’s why I have a soft spot for him. He can’t be kind and selfless because he just. Can’t. He adores HD because she is his guiding light, his northern star, his muse because she gives him hope, something he wants the most to continue living.
I think if we look at his behaviors from this perspective, we will be able to understand him more. What he does now is being a reporter, and he can’t lose this job. He has no degree, nor any money to complete one.
This character is a good person at the core, but because of his situation, he has to consider himself first in every situation.

I don't think selfishness means bad, and honestly (especially after re-watching where he got the Yu-Rim news) I think you can look at the Yu-Rim decision as one where he has no choice but to be selfish.
BUT.... in a number of other ways he's selfish in ways that he doesn't HAVE to be because of his family's finances, in some cases he's selfish in ways that actively endanger that goal.
There is no reason he HAS to refuse to define his relationship with Hee-do when she asks, he chooses not to because he prioritizes his happiness over her, because he worries that defining things will cause her to do something that lessens his happiness.
When she kisses him he has to make a choice... he does, and it's a mature one. However, shortly after he acts like a jealous boyfriend when she talks to other men. He doesn't HAVE to do that, in fact it would be much better for his job security if he acted like an adult. But he does anyway.
Then he starts dating Hee-do.... again, despite being told that he shouldn't have personal relationships and emotions with the people he covers and stories he reports... it's actively bad for his goal and his job, but he does it because he prioritizes what he wants.
I think the writer sees this too, she is giving him hard choices and opportunities to sacrifice and he fails them. His brother even brings it up in episode 5-6.
The writer also gives us a mirror for him... another person with terrible family financial issues, whose life Hee-do brightens up in Yu-Rim. But the thing for her is... when she's presented with sacrificing things she wants, she isn't selfish, does that make her better...meh maybe maybe not, but it makes her selfless. She gives up her relationship, her country, her friends, her family, and to an extent her goals, knowing that in the process she'll draw vitriol from thousands of strangers. She does it because he other option is letter her parent bankrupt themselves.
So overall I'd say, yes Yi-Jin is in a bad spot, and SOME instances he has to be selfish, but in many others he chooses to prioritize his wants over others, and repeatedly. Does that make him a bad person... no, as I noted in another comment that's the great thing about this show, there are lots of complex flawed characters, and one of Yi-Jin's major flaws is that he's unwilling to sacrifice his wants for his needs, even if it may jeopardize his needs, or needlessly cause others upset.

I think there are similarities between the two cases, yes; and you will see they react to situations around them almost in the same way.
Both have family with financial difficulties; I think YJ's family is much more in debts because of the scale of the situation. Both also chose the things that benefited their situation the most, and none of them is at fault. It is true that YJ did make some poor choices, but let us be reminded that he was so young then, as he is only 24 years old now. He has been living alone, he ran away from the situation, hiding from people from his past, stopped living his life.. until he met HD. One of the most breaking moments for this character is when he said he would never spend his living days being happy even for a single moment; that was how guilty he felt. Unfound guilt, if I may say. In any case, he came to the realization when his younger brother called him out for making uncalled for decision on the younger brother’s part. He then realized his mistake(s), and he came back to Seoul to start living again -with HD's voice messages as his guiding light. To him, HD is not just a gf material, but a life savior, a person he looks up to.
As much as he is in quite the same situation as Yurim, he and his situation are different from her and hers. He is now living alone for the first time, with very limited opportunity at meeting and being his family members. Like YR, they became the head of the household despite their young ages. YJ and YR know that they can't make the decision based on only what they want anymore; they have their loved ones depending on them. They became more jaded not by their choice. If you remember, YR also treated HD very poorly at first. Only when she discovered that HD was her best friend in the internet world did she admit to her guilty and condescending behaviors. She had no right to treat HD as such but she did so only because of her own insecurities. That was even before her family became so much in debts. After her father’s accident, her decisions became very much like YJ’s. She chose herself and her family over love. She chose to go to Russia and broke up with JW. Is it fair for JW? No, it was not. He also pointed out that there were other options if she wanted to make this relationship work even if she had to go to Russia, but she chose not to. In this respect, she is not different from YJ. Both of them stopped seeing their significant other thinking they have made the right choice.. for them.
Is it fair for JW or HD? No, it’s not, but nothing in life is. None of them wants all of this on themselves, but here they are with all their baggage. Right now, YJ and HD are incompatible not because one is better and the other, but it’s because they are just at different stages in their lives and their priorities are different. The sad thing is that, as far as I’m concerned, they don’t have ways to make it work. Unlike JW and YR’s relationship, this potential romantic relationship is...

Unlike JW and YR’s relationship, this potential romantic relationship is flawed at its core. I don’t know much about SK’s work culture, but we have seen that YJ also tried many ways to make this relationship work; he asked for the permission to be transferred to another department, but it was also declined. I have no doubt that if he could choose another job, he would do so in an instant; but the truth is also that he just simply can’t because he had no degree. This is the highest paid salary he can possibly do at the moment. He and YR value their family and made decisions which will benefit their financial situation the most. Additionally, his family and he are kind people at heart. Their former employees all said so in the previous episodes.
And to your last point, YR has a lot of people who love her around her. She has her family, her friends, him, and JW. YJ only has HD. She is also a link to her friend group, his “friends”. I think it is quite unfair to ask so much from people who have so little, if any, to give. Is it fair for HD? No, but it is understandable. He isn’t in the position in which he can afford complete fairness even towards her. Having said all this, I am sure he will make a “fairer” decision in the coming eps.
It also surprised me to see how much I feel for this character. Many Beans know that I’m not a NJH’s huge fan, and I suspect I ever will in the future despite his good performance in this wonderful show.

I actually love how this show is sparking off so much debate about what constitutes a “selfish” or a “selfless” act. I think this is what the drama does best, in showing that there is never a perfect solution or path in life, and every difficult decision comes with some sort of tradeoff. How true is that!
You could see Yu Rim’s decision to give up her nationality for her family as a selfless brave decision; but at the same time it meant that she was putting what was most impt to her (ie her family, money) above Jiwoong (and really, without discussing with him!) AND expecting him to give her up so easily.. the latter, although out of good intentions, is also kinda selfish, as Jiwoong voiced out eventually at the airport.
Same for Yijin- perhaps his decision to be with Hee Do could mean risking scandals tt could hurt HD (and also losing his job) - which is selfish - him choosing to give HD happiness at the risk of losing his job, is also selfless isn’t it. If he had stuck to his initial decision to keep it clean between them to “preserve their relationship”, is that truly selfless? Is that what HeeDo wants?
At the end of the day it’s really a matter of perspective (half cup empty half cup full). And also that no decision is perfectly selfless and selfish. And so we feel strongly for these flawed characters- because when we look at our own choices, how many of them are truly perfectly right ones?

That last scene broke my heart to pieces but guess an ending like La la land is more realistic than not. How many people really end up with their first loves in real life? Guess not that many. It was 2 very good episodes.
I liked to see Yi-Jin struggling with his feelings for Hee-Do and his job. I was happy to see that Yoo-Rim wasn't naive and understood the situation.
It's sad that Yoo-Rim had to make this choice. Changing nationality it's a huge decision in the identity of a person. Her online discussions with Hee-Do became real life moments and it was beautiful to see sharing those moments together, their bond.
I'm not so curious about the future. I'm focused on the present time (their present, not ours), seeing them growing together.

They gave us laughs in Episode 13 so they could break our hearts in Episode 14.
This drama consistently surprises me but when I go back and think about it, the writer has foreshadowed most of the events. Kudos for that.
I remember people talking about Yoo-rim’s dad’s truck of doom a few weeks ago, and it finally struck. Yoo-rim making the difficult decision to change nationalities and dealing with the fallout was heart wrenching. It hit even harder because it was Russia, of all places. Thinking of her alone in Russia, away from her family, not speaking the language, is sad.
I knew Yi-jin would face a similar situation to Hee-do’s mom and the Coach as a reporter, I just assumed it would involve Hee-do instead of Yoo-rim. It looks like he’s an anchor in 2009. I can’t help but wish he could have found a different career path. I just don’t see him ever being truly happy as a reporter.
The framing in Episode 14 with the gang happily and drunkenly running through the tunnel at the beginning and Yi-jin sobbing in it at the end got to me.
I loved all of Hee-do and Yoo-rim's scenes. I'm so glad the drama gave equal weight to their arc and relationship.
“Congratulations on your wedding, Hee-do.” I was on Twitter right after the episode aired and the amount of shocked viewers shocked me lol. The writer pretty much told us from the very first episode that Yi-jin and Hee-do don't last. The theories have been fun and funny to read though.
After Episode 14 the show’s decision not to age Kim Tae-ri for the present day scenes seems even more silly. We saw Hee-do in 2009. You don’t change that drastically in 12-13 years lol.
Yoo-rim and Ji-woong’s relationship isn’t very deep, but why do I think they might somehow make it.

Yu-Rim and Ji-Woong's relationship is kind of boring, but at the same time, a lot of real relationships are when seen from the outside. Yu-Rim's life is full of drama, maybe what she needs more than anything in a relationship is just a nice supportive person who doesn't bring any additional drama or stress to her life.

"The amount of shocked viewers shocked me".. yes, me too. Had we been too conditioned to expect twists (even ridiculous ones) for the sake of the OTP ending together, that we ignore a refreshing take of a brave writer who pretty much told us from day one, that they did not?

See, that's the point in my opinion: the writer decided to be vague enough that many viewers felt compelled to speculate...and ep 14 ending was meant to be shocking by the way it was set up.
Since day one everything points to Yijin being neither Heedo's husband nor Minchae's dad, but we were not told that, we were more invited to guess.
Now, personally I tried to ignore the present timeline and focus on the main story of the past for most of the show, but having NJH and KTR play their characters in a future scene were they're not together is a totally different deal 😬
And now we're supposed to watch more of their deepening romance after that scene?! It's a bit jarring imo! 😅
I don't think a good ending needs Heedo and Yijin to be together at all costs, but at the same time I feel like it was a waste all the progress showed till now, in a way...
I have a hard time pointing out exactly what feels off about this whole "mystery" thing, but I think it just comes down to me not liking what the writer created in that aspect, which is weird because I do like the rest of the show enough!
It's kinda confusing and frustrating if I'm being honest! xD
Now it all depends on how this will be wrapped up next week...fingers crossed for a satisfying finale!! 🤞🏼🤞🏼

Agreed with your comment on show’s decision not to age ktr for present day scenes but Think they might have consciously decided to change actors since they may have thought that it could be too jarring for viewers to experience ktr and njh since hee do and njh do not end up together in present day. Just a theory.
Also agreed on your hunch about yurim and jiwoong. I too got the feeling that they might be end game and actually make it till present day.

I think it was a production decision to not use Kim Tae-Ri for the adult parts. It would have been difficult for Kim Tae-Ri to shoot teenagers scenes with a lot of fencing + a choreo to learn and shoot the present scenes with a lot of make-up to make her older. The beginning of the drama was pretty physical for her, with the whole training thing.

That makes sense and probably true. I remember in the earlier episodes I kept thinking why not use the same actors for present day scenes and thought maybe it would have been too expensive to cast ktr and njh since A list actors can cost quite a lot

I'm one of the people who disliked how Yoo-rim treated Heedo in the first part despite knowing that she will have her arc in future eps. But it was lovely to see how far their friendship have come. How Yoorim calmly and logically fought for herself in that jjajangmyeon place *clap clap clap* how Hee-do was her go-to person. I mean, I honestly would go to Heedo as well, SHE'S THE BEST!

I loved the Yu Rim and Hee Do time together. It was so beautiful. I cried a lot. I hope they are still friends in the future. As for Yi Jin, he didn't have to report on the story, he could have given it to someone else. There is bias in every story and this show has shown that brilliantly, even if it is subtle, it is still bias folks.

I felt the same way. He could have given the story to someone else and saved his friendship. Besides, YooRim is not just a friend but they have been friends for a long time.
But there was a scene where Yijin met with her and she called him Reporter Yijin. I think she anticipated it.

What truly disappointed me was that he twisted the knife with his word choice. Just as his description of the final competition of the school team was poetic, he used words that colored the story to Yoo Rim's disadvantage. That to me is a disloyalty to a longtime friend that cannot be excused. There were better ways he could have expressed the same facts.

Yes, he did not need to. But, he cannot afford not to. The show had been telling us that Yijin'S personal mission is to "save" his family, and to do that he has to be successful in his job fast, which he cant afford to lose. There was talk about reinstating the college graduate requirement so it was his only chance. So, yes, he made that choice for his career, and it looks like he would keep making that choice as he became an anchor in 2009 and judging from the article headers Minchae was browsing through, it looked like he had been covering a lot of controversial and high profile stories since.

Wow, this show isn't going to let up until the very end and I love it for that. I liked watching the struggle to just go for the romantic relationship and the honest realization that after the midnight kiss, it couldn't go back anyway. It was either all or nothing from that point forward.
Hmmm... episode 14 really took me by surprise. It was by far my least favorite episode so far. While I did appreciate the beautiful friendship scenes with Hee-do and Yu-rim, it was too much to completely stop the story of Hee-do an Yi-jin in mid step. It didn't fit the feel of the rest of the show or seem true to our main characters. When Yi-jin was in a different city they were still each other's touch stones and even in ep. 13 they couldn't quite escape the gravitational pull of each other. I don't believe that the whole episode when by without more interaction between the two. From the previews, it seems like we're going to make up for that in ep. 15, but I feel like we've lost momentum. I'm just not sure about the decision to step away from that storyline for an entire episode. I could have easily skipped the "make a dummy to fool the press" scene for a heartfelt interaction between our hurting OTP to face a bit of the betrayal and conflicted loyalties they are going to have to face eventually... We'll see next weekend if I can pick up where we left off or if it feels stilted.
I do like that being on the international competition circuit assures that Hee-do and Yu-rim will continue to be in contact. They can legitimately continue their friendship through these contests and go back to being internet pen pals. :)

I couldn't believe it when HD walked away from him, it wasn't like her not to talk it out. I also have to say that I don't really care for Yurim's story. Her sudden change in circumstance feels contrived. I just don't feel anything for her, which I have to put down to the actress, so yeah ep 14 was a big letdown for me.

"Exploiting other's misfortunes" perfectly describes why I left journalism and have never regretted it. Maybe if I had weathered through it, I could see the bright side of the field too, the one that brings justice and gives voice to many. But at that time and how the news has generally been, I thought whenever I worked on a serious topic it would somehow end up being just that. There's always a bias and propaganda in news (both Coach Yang and Yoo Rim's situation) and thanks to citizen journalism and social media we do have an outlet for people to convey both sides of the story. So ep 14 really hit on a personal note and show did it well. It seems like the beginning of the end for Hee Do and BYJ but I really want the friendships to stay. At this point, even that seems difficult. Ugh this show hurts so good! But I'll also have to praise it for perfectly adding the comic bits that balance tone. Still laughing over YJ stuffing his face when HD came closer and angrily telling HD to stay away from oppas.

Episode 14 had plenty of tears, but I'm so glad we didn't need to spend it wallowing in male lead angst caused by not communicating. Instead we got treated to heartfelt and fun (the return of Hee-do's drawing skills lol) friendship moments.
By the end of the episode I wasn't really angry at Yi-jin anymore, but with Hee-do's mom her commitment to her career was very understandable. Maybe because there's not as much attention on his family as in the earlier episodes, the desperation to keep the reporter career while hurting himself and his closest friends isn't really sticking the landing
But that's a small fuss compared to how enjoyable everything else is

Why we will get our happy ending:
Popular theory is that it will be a sad ending to teach us that all moments are precious and fleeting, nothing lasts forever. And in conjunction would be the advice to treasure what we have in the present. It could also include the thing that ko-yurim said, that even tho nothing lasts it's still better to have had it in your lifetime than not at all.
While poetic and true, I don't see the series really being about teaching us those lessons as the purpose of the show. It's just depressing and we have had that message hammered into us again and again the whole series. And then they're going to end it with yet another cycle of the same lesson? I don't buy it.
It's honestly so boring and not creative enough for this writer who has proven to be unpredictable and creative to the point where we haven't been able to properly predict new episodes.
We need something deeper and more inspiring. There is always a twist at the end in kdramas.. And things ending the way it seems to be (that they broke up and HD marries another man) isn't a twist nor is it inspiring.
The better storyline is exactly what Yijin said to Heedo early on about her fencing, that all her failures have been stacking and have now made a stairway for her, and it's the tallest so she can reach out and grab ALL that she wants when she is ready.
Our couple has also been through years of a cycle of struggle and wins and failures. Those have stacked up and they now have a stairwell before them that will allow them to also grab ALL that they want, not just a part, but ALL.
"...the result was brilliant and the ending beautiful." That is the kind of ending we will get.

While this drama is good, I don't find anything particularly inspiring about it . Its just filled with all sorts of depressing lessons.

Although I've thoroughly enjoyed the show, I have to admit I had a throw-the-phone-through-the-tv moment at the end of ep 14. And it's not like it's because the showrunners pulled a 180 on us all of a sudden...they've been up front and hinting (okay, probably more than hinting) the whole time that our lead couple will not be together. After all, it's reasonable to believe that first love is usually not our last love. That people change, evolve and grow apart. That paths that we once walked together often diverge. I get it.
Here's my big "BUT"....But, I am hoping in my heart that this will not be the case for Heedo and YiJin. Because how often in one's life do you meet someone that accepts and loves you unconditionally for who you are and brings out the best in you. Regardless if that happens at 18 or 81, it would seem as if you would want to hold on to that person, because that kind of relationship/meeting of the souls, regardless of whether it's platonic or romantic, comes so infrequently in a lifetime. The most upsetting part of ep 14 was not that Heedo and Yijin were not together, but in the interview, it seemed as if they were not in each other's lives anymore. I think the writers did too good of a job crafting and building up this pairing over the last 17 hours or so, only to show them drift apart and out of each other's lives in 60 minutes or less. Personally, I think that HD/YJ's story deserves a better send off than that and am hopeful that we'll see a satisfying ending to this next week.

Ok, here’s the thorn that’s sticking for me: that Yi Jin didn’t find a way to move departments by making his boss understand that he had indeed already stepped too far over the line in his relationship(s) with the people he was reporting on. Maybe I’m supposed to see that that would just get him fired and it’s reflecting the decision Hee Do’s Mom made about her husband’s funeral.

Hey @bbstl, maybe you could help get what I'm not understanding about the common reaction here and to some degree in the show-- Why is Yi Jin abusing journalistic ethics by simply reporting on someone he had a relationship with? This is SPORTS reporting, not political reporting, and not muckraking reporting at that! He isn't exposing abuses or systematic issues in the all important, crucial to everyone lives fencing world! (as I keep saying even in Korea, fencing isn't that important to sports culture! If people discovered that a male journalist covering the LPGA in the U.S.was in a relationship with an LPGA player there would be a collective shrug of shoulders. All he is doing is profiling the fencers and describing the results--how would bias be a major ethical issue?

I have trouble understanding this as well. I have trouble with Heedo's lack of understanding regarding the role of a reporter. I know she's been through it with her mother, but precisely for that reason she should know better. Reporters don't get free reign in deciding what to report or how to report it. Everything is vetted and approved beforehand. He can't just not report about them because they're his friends. More than any ethical concerns on the side of his employer, the issue seems to be his friends demanding special consideration because of their relationship. Perhaps similar to the friends of a police officer demanding special favors because of their relationship, which is why officers often end up only having friendships with other officers.

After I wrote my question, I was thinking about this last night. I think it is part of the shows general critique of social institutions--journalism is a total failure, and often the enemy of humane thinking in this show. Even the Mom decides she must attack her own daughter on the air in order to be an impartial journalist.

the whole thing about """you shouldnt date someone you're reporting too""" is the most unrealistic representation for journalism, especially niche sports like fencing LOL everybody who works have a degree of relationship with athletes, coaches and people who work in the field and could be a "subject". some are romanticly involved, some are just friends but its not a big deal. I can see her mom stance bcs shes an announcer, covering more stuff, but he is still just a sports reporter tht cover FENCING. the drama is making a big deal, almost forcing us the buy that dilema lol

I put it down to a young rookie journalist not knowing how to navigate the workplace, and pressured to perform by always getting the exclusive. E.g., if anyone found out that he had the exclusive but didn't report on it (and the reasons for it), it would be potentially debilitating for his career. That is not a risk he wanted to take. (This is my assessment of course hah)

i am still on the OTP ship even if it seems to be sinking
here are some reasons why i'm not jumping off:
- the confession of support they gave each other in 2009 would be disrespectful to her husband if he existed.
- despite minchae's last name being kim we know BYJ was adopted. so maybe he changes to his original name and uses that to register his marriage to NHD. her mom was able to hide that she was NHD's mom after all
- during the interview in the beginning of ep 14 there is a little girl that says "dad" quietly in the background. (around 2:55 or shortly after)
- the photo album at the house contains the photo only BYJ got a copy of
- NHD's atelier wood working shop is named 2521 and has rainbow colors in it
- the writer is known for last minute unexpected twists
anyone else still on this ship with me?!?

- his dad said whether it's 10 years ago or now you are my biggest comfort/encouragement.
- his dad carries an old family photo in his wallet that was of the boys as kids, around the age of when he would've been adopted
- 7 year age gap between BYJ and his brother is kinda large

But there's holes there too: wouldn't NHD have recognized her dad in the news broadcast she found? Or in the photo of the group? Also, earlier it was mentioned that grandma had met BYJ and her mother had not spoken with him in a while. Thinking about it... The show doesn't exactly say that she doesn't recognize him. Maybe she's so interested because it IS her parents' story and she wants to see how it all played out. She might not have looked up old videos of her dad before (he's her dad and he does the news, so that's not super interesting to a kid - and I'm assuming she can watch him currently).

In Weibo, some viewers post a possible scenario, they noticed in a scene it was shown that BYI's psuedonym as a reporter is Kim Do-Hee, when read in reversal, it was Hee-Do Kim, with Kim meaning gold. Some viewers think they did get married in secret prior to 2009 and have a daughter, and the daugther was testing her grandma's memory by asking her who is BYJ as the grandma might have Alzheimer's.

about the daughter, I think she could just be interested in her parents love story. she never cared until starting to read how it started and only now she's searching stuff.

yijin chose to broke the story, bc anyone else would have completely twisted the narrative and very likely dragged in yurim's father's accident and exposed her entire family to widespread public scrutiny and criticism. think about the reporter who tried to prey on seungwan to frame students as the bad guys in the conversation about corporal punishment. if someone like him had broken the story, yurim and her family would have been purposely set up as lambs for public slaughter. yijin's report was neutral and only stated the most pertinent facts. yurim still caught a lot of flack, but it was only her. her family was protected.
this is probably what yijin and yurim discussed the night he visited her. i hope we to get see the second half of their conversation as a flashback in the next episode. having yijin break the story for his own career advancement would contradict everything we know about him, so i'm surprised some people have been quick to think that.

I actually felt the reportage on Yoo-rim isn't fair and made it sound like she's doing it for money. But we all know it's not true. She NEEDS the money and the whole reason why she knew Yi-jin in the first place was because his family supported her. In my country, rich people came together to support athletes when they needed money. I'm sure you can find people in Korea who would do the same if they knew about her circumstances. I'm actually quite disappointed with the way the drama chooses to portray the media consuming public. They are capable of charity as well as criticism.

Maybe the public could have helped her before, but in this specific case the reason why her family needed money was because her father caused a serious accident...I'm afraid people wouldn't really be willing to help under such circumstances..
It's just that I'm so used to the Korean public putting down people for the smallest missteps, so yeah..(is this just "malicious reporting" from Korean media?! Who knows 😅)

there is a cultural element here of children being held for their parents' actions (also see, yijin and yihyun being harassed by their father's creditors). the public wouldn't focus on what yurim is personally sacrificing to save her family from ruin. they would hear about her father causing an accident and crippling someone, and drag the entire family through the mud.

I'm surprised that the story about her dad causing such a serious accident wasn't reported. Then again, it was 2001. I think if this happened in 2022 she would have totally gotten slammed by the public for her dad's accident.

I don’t understand why I have to feel satisfied with just the preservation of the friendship between Hee-do and Yoo-rim. While I do hope they remain friends, I also want a happy ending for Hee-do and Yi-Jin. I gotta be honest, I will feel cheated if they don’t get it. I don’t feel like this was a lovely story about love found and lost, and oh well, that’s just life. The title of the show, the way it was billed was that Yi-Jin and Hee-do fall in love at Twenty Five and Twenty One. That’s what I was expecting. While I respect every writer’s choice to craft their story as they see fit, drama endings often leave me feeling disappointed. Like I’ve been duped. It’s not like the movie, Love Story, where you know the ending is tragic. Still hoping against hope for a happy ending. 🤞🏼

So many emotions while watching the last 2 episodes.
Penned down ep 13 Back Yi Jin feelings.
A new year
Began with a kiss from her
Shocked I started to ignore
Her every step toward me, I subtly steer
As much I tried to move farther
She came more and more nearer
To know that I cannot waver
Believe me, I want us forever
Time again has shown its power
To choose between us now or never
With a heavy heart I did not spare
A glance to the one I love so dear
Trying to avoid her in fear
But fate tried to bring us closer
Whenever I see her
Makes my heart flutter
She has waged a war
Inside my heart I cannot bear
Begging to me in tears
She said she doesn’t care
If my love for her isn’t that clear
All she asked was in a whisper
Crying to me don’t disappear
Conflicted as my emotions were
Finally, I got my answer
Bridging the gap between me and her
I ran back to the one I missed so dear
Taking the chance so mere
Telling I am never letting go of her ever
Her tears are my fear
Her smile is my treasure
She is an answered prayer
For she is my hope and my desire
Borrowing the hope and love from her
Promising to create beautiful memories together
Nothing in the world could measure
The immense love i have for her

Nam Joo Hyuk is an actor who is just growing into himself and he find it with this role! He's the anti alpha male lead, someone who is rather shy, awkward, and 'soft.' Its something I notice he tends to carry in his roles. The show does a good job with making our characters actions/thoughts feel realistic, that "Yeah this could happen in rl/I too would feel the same way." Not easy to do, but I think that this show is deeper than I thought it would be at first glance. The more the show goes on, the more I found myself admitting how well made this is.
All of the characters are so rich, and given space to be given great scenes that showcase them. I'll miss this bunch when this show ends :( Bo-na was a bit cold at first in the role, I think once she started to open up she warmed me over with her character/storyline. As for Kim Tae Ri, what more can I say? She's one of the best actresses of her generation. She nailed it with Hee-do, and a well written female character. She isn't a plot device to be set up for the ML/couple, but I can truly feel her emotions!
For me, what I got was that memories we've in that moment are beautiful/timeless, but ultimately those memories slowly disappear b/c thats life! However, those memories we had in our youth live on. I also think the show does a good job of showing us how futile one moment can be, how sad or happy life can turn out and oftentimes we can't predict that.

Kim Taeri is my find of the year with this show, never having watched her previously. She's growing up in front of our eyes, and I swear I wouldn't believe anyone if they told me she wasn't really 18-20 years old. I've always had a soft spot for NJH since WFKBJ. He's not the best actor out there, and stays in his comfort zone, but always delivers, and you're right, he does this kind of role well. I also loved Lee Joomyung, playing Ji Seungwan. I don't know if I'm conflating the character for the actor, but she's got a sass about her that's very cool.
The drama will go down in my books as a lovely coming of age show, and a memorable exploration of the friends-to-lovers trope (inarguably my favorite). While I'm certainly on the "HEA for the OTP" ship, I will take whatever this show gives me, because it's just been that good!

I hope this is not the lesson of the show, because in real life, the truly meaningful moments do NOT disappear in memory, unless you have dementia. They may be colored differently, with certain things remembered inaccurately, but they do not, as Hee-do said at the end of one episode, just flow into one another. Nor, as she said, is it for the best that they do disappear. That would be a really false note in this drama. But I actually don't think that will be the lesson of the show--its too intelligently written for that. I think there will be an additional twist or reunion of some sort.

The ep 13-14 focused on the conflicting emotions and inner turmoil faced by the characters.
Yi Jin had a hard time in both episodes and it really broke my heart. He has been given so many hints and advices from his seniors regarding the distance he has to keep between a reporter and a subject. He tries so hard to balance his work and keep his loved ones protected, but his difficult life throws a curveball and he has to choose either one of them. From him avoiding Hee Do after the new year kiss trying not to waver until he gave into his true feelings to him reporting on Yoo Rim's breaking news and he becoming a traitor in Hee Do's eyes ,Yi Jin has never had a peaceful moment. Almost everyday is battle for him .
Nam Joo Hyuk is equally exceptional as Kim Tae Ri in this drama. His eyes speak so much. The subtle change in his emotions fitting each scene perfectly. He has come a long way. He deserves to win an award for this role.
I never found Yoo Rim likeable in earlier episodes, but ep 14 she truly shone. Loved her to bits. It was a very difficult decision she made on her part to change her nationality. but her due to financial situation and to save her family nothing else mattered to her. The courage to do something like this is commendable. I loved the friendship between the girls. That is some friendship goals they have. Good and bad times they were together and i hope to see the same friendship vibes when they apart too.
My most favorite moment from the 2 episodes is the end of ep 13 where Yi Jin kissed HeeDo. That was an intense moment.
The most heartbreaking moment from the 2 episodes the Tunnel Scene at ep 14. The tunnel which brought so much happiness to Yi Jin , yet due to his actions he could not avoid, him breaking down completely there, really made me cry.
Also, with the interview scene at the end between Yi Jin and Hee Do , there seems to be no chance of them being together at the end. I wish i could say otherwise, but my heart is saying they are the end game.

This is why I've always thought Yi-jin feeling conflicted over Hee-do made no sense when a whole Ko Yu-rim exists. He's known Yu-rim since she was in middle school. He's close to her parents. She calls him "oppa." His family sponsored her fencing. How is that not conflict of interest?
Yu-rim has been dealt such a shitty hand in life. I know why Yi-jin couldn't report the truth or else the public would find out about her dad's accident, but I wish he did a story on her response to the restaurant owner about having to earn money for her family and not selling out their country. I was proud of Yu-rim for standing up for herself and more when she said she learned it from Hee-do. I teared up when she read the Russian phrases by the friends, and her admitting to Hee-do that she didn't want to go broke my heart. Did she even graduate before leaving? Hee-do getting mad at Yi-jin was immature. She doesn't know how the world works. This is his job. At least Yu-rim understood.
I don't understand the internet's meltdown from "Congratulations on your wedding." Since the first episode, we were told Min-chae's last name is Kim, and she's been reading Hee-do's diary and wouldn't not recognize her father's name or photo. I'm just glad Yi-jin isn't dead, but that was the most awkward interview ever. Honestly, I hate adult Hee-do and Min-chae so much that I've chosen to ignore everything that happens in the present, so I can easily ignore 2009 too.

Her mom gave her a pretty comfortable middle-class life so she doesn't understand how when you're poor I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place sometimes you have to sacrifice a bit of dignity and pride and maybe even principles to survive and protect your loved ones. I like Na Hee-do but she is quite privileged. Yeah the present-day scenes are pretty subpar and feel like they belong in another drama.

These episodes brought joy, laughter but so many tears. Ugh
Ji-woong is such a comic relief, I just love him. It was so beautiful to see the Hee-Do/Yu-rim friendship fully in episode 14. Yu-rim and Yi-jin broke my heart 😭.
I was sad that Na Hee-Do was not more understanding of Yi-jin's conflict/situation when he broke the news. She knows him best.
We saw him struggling so much with the decision and I think it's only fair to give him the benefit of doubt since we didn't see how his conversion with Yu-rim went.
Ultimately, Yi-jin should have listened to Hee-Do's mom when she told him to change departments but alas it is what it is

After this episode, I can’t get behind Yi-jin. I don’t understand his motivation to break the news about Yoo-rim.
Is this ‘scoop’ really going to push his career forward? Can’t he wait for the next one?
We haven’t heard anything about his family in a while, so it doesn’t feel motivated by money or need of a promotion.
He has never expressed any real love for journalism; it’s just the job he could get. So when he asks, ‘should I have been second?’ (to break the news), I felt like, yeah, you have way more to lose from this decision than you have to gain.
At the very least, couldn’t he warn her beforehand?

Besides my theory about the shows hatred of journalism, which I know is mine alone, I believe there is a general critique of what "adulthood" means in this show. So to become a full fledged "adult" he must shed all his previous emotional ties. That's why I'm very interested in the resolution of this--will there be a few heartfelt scenes, and then everyone go their separate ways? Or will there be more lasting "happy" ending--whatever that would be?

I agree there seems to be a critique of journalism, but I wonder if it’s truly about that specific career or journalism is instrumental to be able to create the tension between ‘money’ and ‘love’. Much of the show wraps around this dichotomy, where money (which is possibly the same as what you are seeing as ‘adulthood’) gets in the way of being able to love easily or properly. I’m thinking of Yi-jin’s family, Yoo-rim’s family, Hee-do’s mom, and now Yi-jin with his own relationships.

One thing about the drama, is that it has resolutely avoided a lot of the tropes in drama in favor of a more realistic and nuanced world view.
Hee-do's mother isn't a coldhearted villain, she's a hurt woman struggling with a difficult life, supporting he daughter in a society that puts up hurdles in front of professional women, and making all the tough choices and sacrifices it entails, and never having the time to process her own grief.
The coach is neither the wonderful, but wronged by society victim, nor the cold-hearted and corrupt taskmaster, she's something in-between.
Seung-wan and her mother don't get to change the school, there is no great outpouring of support for preventing corporal punishment... they simply take themselves away from it, proud, but generally ineffective.
Each of the characters (except maybe Hee-do) is flawed, none of them is perfect, and all of their sufferings don't come because of some villain or plot that can be overcome, they come because that's how life is, and the obstacles in their way are often systematic. There is no one person to blame for Yu-Rim's family's issues, it's just how life is when you're poor and society is set up for the rich.
I think that's been brilliant writing throughout, and it's one reason I hope they continue through the end with the idea. Like Yu-Rim is going to spend a big part of her life in Russia, some people will hate her for it, she and Hee-do will never be teammates again. Hee-do and Yi-Jin are on different paths, he's going to have to make a choice likely at some point, as will she, what is it I want/need from my life? And like ly for Yi-Jin the answer will be his career, and for Hee-do? Probably much the same.
My hope is that the writer plans to continue as she has, and this is a story about this brief period where Hee-do (and her friends) finds herself, and how she and they move into finding their paths through the obstacles of adult life.

You've expressed better than I could my sense of the show, and I completely agree about what should be the ending. Will any of the characters in the show actually get what they want out of life? It doesn't seem possible. And its not because of any huge tragedy that occurs or any enormously destructive character flaw-its just because society is set up against any lasting happiness. The brilliance I see in the writing is that because its wrapped up in an occasionally warm and fuzzy package, with the hint of a classic romance, a lot of people, including me, were expecting, (or in my case, hoping!) to see a slightly more sentimental vision. But instead, it has a gimlet-eyed view of coming of age--it pierces through the sentimentality.

I would also say... they are likely not going to get "everything" they want out of life, but who does.
We've seen 2 points in Hee-do's future, she gets to compete in fencing at a high level for at least a decade plus, she has a daughter, and a new better relationship with her mother... she got a lot of things out of life.
Yi-Jin we see will have success in his career, and likely that means his family is in better shape financially (and socially) than it was, he got much of what he wanted.
We haven't seen the futures of the others yet, so there is a lot of room there, but I think one of the things that is nice is the idea.... you don't need everything you ever dreamed of to be successful and happy, sometimes things fall away, but what remains is important.

Yes, this is my hope too. In fact, I'd be very disappointed if the writer suddenly makes some last-minute twists that I doubt can be reasonably explained in 2 episodes. There is a happy ending for each one of them, and the happy ending is about them getting finding their paths (as you said), and coming to terms with it, and using this to carve their own place in the world and becoming a complete person on his/her own. Yes, it would be nice if they end up together as many hope, but if the writer chooses that path, I would also add the hope that it will be done in a way that will not feel like it was just done for fan service.

Although I may be a fool, I'm still hoping that either Hee-do and Yi-jin will end up together or are already together. The idea of YJ being adopted helps with this potential happy (for me) ending.
Perhaps YJ wished HD wedding congratulations as a way to acknowledge their own secret wedding vows but to hide from the public who their spouses are. Just like HD mom not sharing that HD is her daughter.
In the case that they are not currently together then that explains why HD is such a different person in the present day. Her life was never the same. When she gets together with YJ she will revert to her old self and KTR will play the part again with joy! Haha.
Can't explain why the daughter doesn't seem to recognize/acknowledge/react to YJs photos except her thinking "oh, that's a younger dad" no need to react. There is always the 'he had to get plastic surgery' scenario but that is another show.
Will the ending be like the one in 'Full House'?

This drama tells a story very beautifully, that's for sure. However, I really do not understand what the point of the current (their future) timeline is. I think I would have enjoyed the story even more if it had been told in a linear fashion. Now that I know that Hee Do is (seemingly) a boring adult who lost her spark and doesn't even remember half of the good times she had with her high school friends, I am less invested in the story of her growing up. If the point is "good things are temporary", I would have still gotten it if we saw them become adults and slowly lose touch. That would have been bittersweet but realistic, and at least we could have made up stories in our minds that the whole gang might reunite later in their lives.
As for the romance it's the same thing. That 2009 interview crushed me, because Hee Do and Yijin were definitely talking like old lovers who haven't seen or talked to each other in years. In that case, I'm kind of wondering what is the point of their budding romance in the past timeline? Best comparison I can think of is this: if you were a guest at a wedding where the groom and bride look wonderfully in love, but then a time traveler sat next to you and said "guess what, they'll divorce in five years", then you couldn't really enjoy the wedding anymore right? Even if the bride and groom look totally in love in that moment. That's how I feel about this romance now.

Perfect analogy! That's how I feel watching, too. On one hand, I think the romance is beautifully done--the writing and acting conveys so much in just a few words of dialogue, and there are so many powerful moments when a look or a gesture immediately reveals what's in these characters' hearts. I was thinking last night while watching the "rainbow" episode that the scene on the bridge might be one of my favorite confessions ever.
And yet . . . when we're given those glimpses of the present, I feel immediately deflated. It's not just that Hee Do and Yi-jin are clearly not together or even in each other's lives anymore (I think the little we get on this front is unambiguous and I don't see room for a twist to explain it away) but that the little we see of the present day is not only mundane but also deflating. I'm all for realism in dramas, and I know that first loves are rarely forever loves, but still, the present day timeline just drags on the story for no good reason.
The writing is so skilled that I'm willing to admit I might be wrong and there will be some 11th hour moment that makes me sit up and go "Oh now that's beautiful and makes everything worth it" but at this point, as much as I love this show (and I do love it), I can only resent the existence of the present day storyline and wish it hadn't been included.

Love how beautiful this show is. I think the show is trying to bring home the point that it's the journey that matters, not so much the destination. Look at how much the audience is (still) drawn to the show even though we kinda knew from the outset that they probably wouldn't end up together. And yet we still keep watching it, and still love the journey.
Although of course it would be lovely if the couples end up together, but what is most meaningful is that they have impacted one another in such significant ways and we can indeed see so much growth in all the five characters over the last few episodes.
Fingers crossed though, that the writers will give us an unexpected gift. But regardless, I'm ready for whatever the ending may be.

Comments have become amazingly philosophical regarding the resolution to this drama. Sometimes people grow apart - even those who were once deeply in love. The lyrics of Tony Arata's "The Dance" came to mind:
And now, I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end, the way it would all go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss the dance.

I'd love to make a guess about the resolution of the show.
I think it's quite clear that the show has been hinting that these two lovely human beings might not end up together. So my guess is that, they wouldn't. As the show has been from the perspective of looking back to the past, I think it's very likely that the story taking place in the past was a bittersweet memory of the protagonist, of which she wanted to forget. As Hee-do said to her daughter that sometimes, it is better to forget, I believe the reason why she intentionally tried to forget it was because that happiness no longer exists in the present timeline. I guess that because of that reporting incident that YJ did on YR, the group grew apart, especially the budding romantic relationship between YJ and HD. If I remember correctly, the voiceover narrating a story in the episode when HD and JW was going to take the CSAT and the rest of the group was their cheering on them said that because they didn't know how to bend and chose to break, the crack began to show. I believe HD and YJ grew apart from that incident of him reporting the exclusive on YR.
What I think would happen during the time they were apart is that both of them began living their life, their new life (HD in a university, and YJ as a news anchor) in their respective path. In the end, HD got married to a person compatible with her and with her career, and YJ remained single or got married to another woman who was compatible with him and his career. They might not contact a lot, but each of them still cheers one another on in secret. The reason why HD's mom mentioned she met YJ a few weeks or a month ago showed that he is still working as a news anchor, and HD' mom met him as she used to work in the same industry and hence is always his senior.
This way, the show will end as a classic tale of the great First Love and Great Love of HD's life which never worked out. I remember there is this saying in Kdramas that first love rarely works out, and if this show ends the same way as I have predicted, it can become a classic tale. I'm not against both of them ending up together though, but I think the chance is low as that would contradict every little hint we got in the previous episodes.

I agree with what you're saying and I guess that's how the writer has been hinting things might be from the get go. The only thing that negates this ending is that its predictable and this writer has actually been quite unpredictable throughout the show here and there. She likes to surprise us but a part of me thinks that the main story has still somewhat remained rather predictable so maybe we are headed to what has always been planned.

Maybe, just maybe, as some have pointed out that HD doesn’t wear the wedding right, perhaps she is a divorced and a reunion of some sort with her first crush at this point in time (when she is no longer a fencer and he is no longer in the sports department) things might work. That is kind of open-ending which doesn’t contradict everything that has happened. I’m ok with this possibility also.
