What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim: Episode 13

This episode is all about Young-joon and his naughty little devil, and I love the frank discussions of sex and consent as Young-joon tries to figure out how to take his and Mi-so’s relationship to the next level. It’s a sticky topic for two people who are still figuring out how to go from colleagues to lovers, and doubly so when you consider that they’re both relatively inexperienced. Luckily, they’re already good at the one thing that makes a relationship successful — communication.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

After an emotionally exhausting day, Young-joon and Mi-so have a simple dinner at Young-joon’s house. Mi-so says that honesty is always best, and Young-joon tells her that honestly, he doesn’t want to waste this night with her. But just as things are getting hot and heavy, Young-joon’s phone rings. Because of course it does.

He ignores it, but it rings again immediately, so Mi-so tells him to answer in case it’s an emergency. It’s Yoo-shik, and luckily for him, it is an emergency — a French company with an exclusive contract with them is being targeted by a UK company.

Since they’re such a large brand, if they decide to break their contract, Yumyoung would incur some severe losses. Young-joon asks for a report on their potential loss, and on the profits the French company has made from being sold in Yumyoung duty-free stores compared to their competitors’ stores.

Left alone, Mi-so starts to re-fasten her blouse, then wonders if that’s weird in case Young-joon comes back. She gets all flustered thinking about him undoing her top, and gulps some more wine to settle herself.

After reviewing the numbers, Young-joon tells Yoo-shik that they can’t afford to pull the French company’s products and will have to renegotiate their contract, which he believes is their ulterior motive. He and Yoo-shik decide that they need to leave for France first thing in the morning.

Young-joon realizes that if he goes to France, he won’t see Mi-so for a week, so he needs to make tonight count. But by the time he gets back to her, she’s drunk and fast asleep. He pointedly grumbles in her direction that he’s leaving for a week-long business trip tomorrow, and that she’ll regret it if they don’t make the most of tonight, but she doesn’t wake up.

Even a sudden violent coughing fit right in Mi-so’s ear doesn’t work, to Young-joon’s chagrin. Finally he gives up and carries her to bed, and he settles for a kiss on her forehead, waving away his naughty-minded devil. He complains that at this rate, he’ll become an expert in forehead-kissing, ha.

In the morning, Mi-so finds herself alone in Young-joon’s bed, and she realizes with horror that she drank too much and fell asleep. Young-joon is sitting nearby, and he says grumpily that he did not sleep well. With a nervous giggle, Mi-so asks about the phone call last night, and Young-joon sighs that he’s leaving on a business trip.

Mi-so helps him pack, and he gives her a backhug and whines about not seeing her for a week. He threatens to smuggle her along in his suitcase, but she says she has work to take care of. Young-joon takes a picture of himself with Mi-so’s phone to keep her company while he’s gone, than takes one of her for himself.

He also takes one of them together, and teases that he’ll punish her if she doesn’t contact him often. She asks how, and he “punishes” her with a long, thorough kiss.

Young-joon is already sending “I miss you” texts to Mi-so before he even gets to the airport. She responds with several heart emojis, which he returns, and Mi-so nearly gets caught simpering at her phone by Ji-ah. Young-joon sighs, “So cute…” and Cheol, who’s driving, is all Thank you, sir, I get that a lot.

They video-call that evening and joke about who missed who more. Young-joon complains that he’s jealous of Hardworking Cow for sitting on the bed next to Mi-so, so Mi-so elbows Hardworking Cow off the bed and says that Young-joon’s place is free.

Young-joon goes to his meeting, buoyed by the little box of caramels Mi-so tucked into his document folder. He successfully renegotiates their contract with the French supplier, then tries to call Mi-so, but she’s busy in a meeting. She lies in bed that night, staring at Young-joon’s picture and missing him.

Gwi-nam is promoted to Young-joon’s office team, to everyone’s delight — even Ji-ah’s, who’s regarding him a lot more favorably since he helped her with the notes she shredded. The whole team wilts to hear that Young-joon will be back in two days, and when Se-ra wishes his plane would be delayed, Mi-so loses her temper and slams her hand on her desk.

At the airport, Young-joon nearly runs in his eagerness to see Mi-so, making Yoo-shik complain about his long legs. Young-joon says he’s worried about how much Mi-so misses his handsome face, so he’s come home early to surprise her.

A frigid wind blows through the office, heralding Young-joon’s early return. Seeing Mi-so smiling at Gwi-nam for his efficient work, Young-joon scares ten years off Gwi-nam’s life with his jealous glare. He’s more friendly to the new intern than he is to Gwi-nam, and he tells Mi-so to meet him in his office.

Once alone, Young-joon fusses that he cut his trip short and flew for twelve hours to see Mi-so smile at him, only to find that smile aimed at another man. His distress just makes her smile even wider, and at the beautiful sight, he goes starry-eyed and kisses her without warning.

He wraps her in a hug and says they should stay close now that they’re back together. He takes her for coffee, unconcerned with all the work that’s piled up while he’s gone. He tells Mi-so that he never skipped class as a student, and that this is the first time he’s ever skipped work, just to spend time with her.

Sung-yeon is still in the country, and he thinks about his childhood. He remembers how confusing it was when Young-joon’s name was so similar to his, and how Young-joon got special tutors due to his above-average intellect. The day Young-joon was kidnapped, Sung-yeon had left him alone on purpose, and in his guilt, he’d convinced himself that he was the one who was kidnapped.

He’d been planning to leave the country, but he tells his parents that he doesn’t think he should run away again. He says that it was never Young-joon he hated, but his own self, for being so jealous of Young-joon’s apparent perfection.

Mom apologizes for not paying enough attention to him, and she asks his forgiveness. Dad also says he’s sorry for unintentionally comparing Sung-yeon to Young-joon, and Sung-yeon says it’s not too late to start over.

When Young-joon and Mi-so get back to the office, Ji-ah is all atwitter over a rumor that Young-joon has a girlfriend. A friend got a photo of him kissing Mi-so’s hand and texted it to Ji-ah, though luckily Mi-so’s face isn’t visible. Mi-so admits she was with him but fibs that she waited in the car and didn’t see the so-called girlfriend.

Ji-ah sees a text pop up on Mi-so’s phone from Young-joon, saying that he enjoyed skipping work with her. She asks if Mi-so is the girlfriend, but Mi-so lies that the “vice chairman” who sent her the text was someone entirely different. She almost gets away with it, but Ji-ah recognizes her bracelet from the picture.

She meekly apologizes if she ever said anything upsetting about Young-joon, saying that it’s hard to hear someone badmouthing your boyfriend. Mi-so keeps denying it, but Ji-ah doesn’t believe her anymore. She shows Mi-so another angle of the picture where Mi-so’s face can clearly be seen in a reflection. Busted.

Mi-so begs Ji-ah to keep it a secret, and Ji-ah assures her that she’s smart and loyal, ha. But she’s giggly all afternoon, and keeps referring to Young-joon as “your boyfriend.” She’s dying of curiosity and asks Mi-so a zillion questions until Mi-so retreats to Young-joon’s office for some peace.

She tells Young-joon that Ji-ah knows about their relationship, but he doesn’t much care. He says it would be better if they went public, especially since guys wouldn’t hit on Mi-so anymore. She argues that they’re not hitting on her now, and refuses to make things public, even forbidding any more skinship at the office.

Young-joon pouts that he can’t do anything he wants to do, when relationships should be about compromise. He complains that it feels like Mi-so wants to hide him, but she says she’s protecting him because of his social influence. Young-joon says he’ll try, but he can’t guarantee he won’t run out of patience.

At the end of the work day, everyone wants to go out to celebrate Gwi-nam’s addition to the team. He says he finds work most welcoming, and they marvel that he really is a workaholic.

Young-joon nervously asks if Mi-so is coming to his place again, but she says she’s not having nightmares anymore. He stammers that there’s still “something” they have to do, that thing they couldn’t finish before, and Mi-so goes wide-eyed when she realizes what he’s talking about.

Young-joon says he can make it sound sexier if she wants, throwing out some descriptive phrases, but Mi-so stops him when he gets to “erotic.” With a grin, Young-joon says that the sexiest think he can think of is that he loves her, then he says it again plainly, “I love you.” *melts*

Ji-ah is surprised to see Gwi-nam arriving home early after he said he was planning to work late. He admits that he lied for fear that he’d be roped into paying for drinks, so Ji-ah asks if he’d be up for a welcome party with just her, as thanks for helping her with her notes. He refuses again, but she snatches him by the backpack and tells him to shut up and follow her.

Just before they get to Young-joon’s house (and as he’s getting pretty nervous), Mi-so get an emergency call from her father. He’s in the hospital with a mild tendon injury that he got while stage-diving during a concert, hee.

Mi-so tells Young-joon that her father is fine, but that she’ll have to stay with him overnight. He offers to stay with her and meet her dad, but she says it’s not a good time, and that he must be tired after his long flight anyway.

She sends him home to send the night alone with his naughty devil, who teases that this definitely isn’t why he rushed home two days early. Poor guy, he even hallucinates that the devil is a girl and can talk.

Gwi-nam thoroughly enjoys his free meal courtesy of Ji-ah, and even gets a little drunk. Ji-ah asks why he’s so frugal when rumor has it that he makes good money. He looks a little sad, then chirps that it’s a secret. Ji-ah says that there’s no shame in how he lives and asks why he keeps it a secret.

Gwi-nam explains that when he was young, he thought that everyone lived in a tiny apartment like his family, and he was never ashamed, because they were happy. But as he got older, people made him ashamed, because they couldn’t even give him compliments about his good grades or good job without tacking on “… despite his family’s circumstances.”

He says his goal is to save a lot of money to buy a big house, so that his future wife and children never have to hear such things. He reveals that he’s saved up a million won (about a hundred thousand U.S. dollars), and Ji-ah asks how he managed it in only four years with the company. He tells her that he spends very little and invests in stocks, and that when he has a family, then he’ll enjoy spending what he’s earned.

Mi-so beds down on the couch in her father’s hospital room. He says that he heard she’s quitting her job to find herself, and that it worries him so much he can’t eat. He blames himself for the fact that she hasn’t been able to live how she wants because he’s never been successful.

But Mi-so says she’s glad he’s lived life how he wants. She tells him that she’s quitting to get some rest, and tells him not to worry. He reminds her that Beyonce became more successful after leaving Destiny’s Child, and says that leaving Young-joon will make her more successful, too.

Young-joon lies awake, hoping to hear from Mi-so and checking his phone every three seconds. Finally he texts her, but she’s asleep and doesn’t respond.

In the morning, Young-joon takes particular care with his appearance. Mi-so calls, and he magnanimously decides to forgive her for not texting him back last night. But she’s calling to ask for the morning off since Pil-nam can’t come take care of Dad until the afternoon, making Young-joon pouty all over again.

Missing her, he stops by the hospital on his way to work. Unfortunately, she’s gone to Dad’s place to pick up some of his things, and she yells at him not to go up and meet Dad alone since he doesn’t know about their relationship.

Gwi-nam seems nervous when he brings Ji-ah a report she was supposed to do, stammering that he did it as thanks for the food and drinks last night. She blushes and thanks him, and he says that finishing work makes him feel refreshed, leaving her with a cute grin.

Just as Pil-nam arrives to care for Dad, Young-joon texts Mi-so to ask her to come to work as soon as possible. Pil-nam asks her to have lunch first, saying she’s got news, and Young-joon keeps texting while they eat. Pil-nam tells Mi-so that she’s quitting her job to work in a friend’s clinic, and hands over her entire severance as payback for all the money Mi-so earned to pay off her student loans.

She makes Mi-so take the money despite her objections, saying that she needs money to get married. After lunch, she insists on buying Mi-so a dress she sees in a shop, as Young-joon gets hungrier and hungrier waiting for Mi-so to show up so they can eat together.

When she finally returns, Young-joon sees the shopping bags and assumes she got him a gift. He’s disappointed to learn that not only did she eat while he was waiting to have lunch with her, but she also went shopping for herself. He tells Mi-so that he feels like she didn’t think about him at all.

She apologizes, so Young-joon asks if she’d like to go to his house tonight. She accuses him of acting like a bulldozer, pushing her to spend the night with him. Confused, he goes to Yoo-shik for advice.

Yoo-shik reminds him that this is Mi-so’s first relationship, though Young-joon argues that it’s his, too. He says he’s excited and wants to treat her well, but Yoo-shik says he still can’t pressure her. He advises Young-joon to take his time, and Young-joon asks how, when he’s so crazy about her. Yoo-shik just says that if he doesn’t stop sprinting while Mi-so is just learning to walk, she’ll get tired and leave him.

Ma-eum brings Yoo-shik a piece of cake she picked up for him at lunch. She trips and careens into him, and they both end up with cake all over themselves. Yoo-shik takes it calmly, saying that it happens all the time, so often that he keeps several spare shirts at work, ha. He tells Young-joon that this is what happens when you can’t control your speed.

Mi-so overhears Se-ra on the phone making a date with Cheol for tonight, though she still doesn’t know who Se-ra’s new boyfriend is. Se-ra wonders what they should do after dinner and a movie, saying that the night is long and they’re burning up with passion for each other.

Mi-so goes back to Young-joon, who apologizes for not controlling his speed and being too impatient. He says it’s like he’s been suppressing his feelings for nine years, and they’re all bursting out at once. He tells Mi-so that their shared past was horrible, but if he had to go through it again to meet her, he would.

He leaves for an appointment and goes home afterward, alone. But he finds Mi-so outside his house, waiting for him, and she says she came to apologize for not being more considerate of his feelings. She says haltingly that she’s not planning to go home tonight, because she wants to stay with him.

Young-joon looks like he’s afraid to believe what she’s saying. He warns her that if she goes into his house now, he won’t be able to control his speed, and doesn’t plan on stopping. Mi-so just turns and walks inside, turning back to see if he’s going to follow.

He does, and this time when he kisses her, there’s no question where it’s leading. Young-joon carries Mi-so to bed, where she finishes helping him take his shirt off. He raises up to say he loves her again, and this time she tells him, “I love you, too.”

COMMENTS

As happy as I was at the end of last week’s episodes, I have to admit that I liked Young-joon and Mi-so’s real night together much more. Mi-so made a conscious choice to stay with Young-joon, and she was an active and enthusiastic participant this time around, instead of passively letting things happen. They’re on the same page now, emotionally and physically, and while Mi-so seemed willing but anxious before, this time it just felt right.

I had a feeling that Gwi-nam has a really good reason for living so frugally, but I had no idea it would be so thought-out and meaningful. I love that he’s living simply by choice, to ensure that his future family never has to repeat his family’s circumstances while he was growing up. It’s also like he’s trying to prove to himself that there’s no shame in living that way, and that he can be happy without all the trappings that money brings. I’ve liked his character for a long while now (and Chansung is frankly killing it with his hilarious facial expressions), but I fell for him right along with Ji-ah when he looked so sad about the things people would say about him, and outlined his plan to make sure that never happens to his future children.

I appreciate how this episode handled Young-joon’s preoccupation with getting Mi-so into bed, because although it’s natural for him to want to finish what they started and be closer to Mi-so in that way, he was in danger of pushing the issue too hard and forcing something that should come naturally. Especially since Young-joon and Mi-so are supposedly both virgins, between his lifelong fear of women and her lack of time to date. I don’t blame Young-joon for thinking about it a lot, particularly after getting so close, then being parted from Mi-so for a week. And I don’t think he was being disrespectful yet, but he was definitely too pushy. It’s good that he sought advice from Yoo-shik, and that he was told to back off before he ruined everything.

It’s also good that Mi-so is used to Young-joon being demanding of her time, because she could understand that his repeated mentioning of the topic was more a symptom of his eagerness to be closer to her than just a desire for sex. But I do think Young-joon had a point that she was being a bit dismissive of his feelings. They hadn’t seen each other for almost a week, and he was looking forward to spending time with her (and not just in bed) and even told her he loved her, but she prioritized everything else over being with him. I didn’t feel that Mi-so was consciously avoiding Young-joon and his hopes for intimacy, but she also didn’t put time with him first like he was putting time with her first. She kept insisting they keep their relationship a secret from their colleagues and even her father, while Young-joon was ready to tell the whole world.

So for that reason as well as what I previously said, I’m glad that Mi-so made the conscious and thought-out decision to stay the night with Young-joon. It was her way of telling him that he’s a priority to her, too, and that she will consider his feelings in the future instead of making unilateral decisions for their relationship. And she even said she loves him, too — not that that was ever in question, but you could see in the way he waited after saying it that he really needed to hear the words from her.

I am glad that kdramas are reflecting real life and real relationships. Sex is not key but when two people are in love it is expected that they would want to stay with one another and be close to one another! And the tastefullness of that scene was top notch! All that bulldozer trait was all about love not lust!

And sqeeeeeeeeelllllllllll.....

I thought I was fine watching that last scene, and then Park Seo Joon took his shirt off and I began wheezing.

Watching it late at night was probably a bad idea as needless to say I couldn’t got to sleep.

I saw it on the Beanie Wall first and gasped. That man is finely cut, no doubt about it. I didn’t expect the shirt coming off in such a provocative way and the sound of the buttons pulling apart was just too much for my senses. 😮☺️

I don’t really fancy his suits in this drama except for a select few. They should, you know, write more shirtless scenes for PSJ so his stylists won’t have to dress him up. He’s already good looking as it is. No need to suffocate him in those suit and tie 🤷🏻‍♀️

This episode! I actually felt that this episode echoed a lot of truth about men and women and did it in a very sensitive way. Actually, my husband acts very much like Young-joon when he’s away and I don’t know how many arguments I’ve had with him about me not calling, not communicating, not making time to spend together because he just misses me and my voice. Even after so many years, life seems more important, and I forget how important these acts are. And then when he comes home, I have to carve out just a bit of extra time to catch up with him. And sex is important; communicating is more imprortant, but sex is right up there in a relationship. Where you get into trouble is when it’s done outside a committed relationship. And for many guys, it resets them, tells them that everything is alright in the relationship (although it might be the furtherst thing from the truth), and strengthens those bonds of communication and love. One of the first things that I had to learn in relationships was that certain things may not be as important to me as they are to my partner. But if we neglect those things, relationships fail. Young-joon did well slowing himself down to try to match how fast she wanted the relationship to go as well and Mi-so understanding how much he loves he, finally, tintake tge next step. It was nice seeing the push and pull in their relationship with this.

And Woo-shik. Whoever is writing for his character is a genius. I love his analogies. It’s almost like he’s been to therapy. I really think he’s the therapist in this show, and that Young-joon would be so much worse off without his wisdom masked in hilarity! The baby vs. Bolt analogy—I’m going to use it today and every day.

And why didn’t they use LMK and age him a bit to be her dad again??? I would have loved to see that.

All in all, a very well-balanced episode. Looking forward to 14!

I keep saving Woo Shik advice gifs and sending them to my best friend, because that is the way we both like to give advice. We’ve now had long conversations about the need to remove the panties from our hearts in not just romantic relationships (we both historically have fear of commitment that even affected our friendship). She just agreed that I can call her a sexy bulldozer if she can call me a sly creature. (What Woo Shik calls Young Joon at the beginning of the conversation).

I need Woo Shik to have a happy ending. He is too precious to stay lonely.

Woo-shik is definitely the best drama therapist I ever seen. His analogies always hit the bull on the head, although his examples may be crude but the meaning is always spot on. Best BFF ever! He needs a happy ever after, as his consultant fees. p.s. Chinese viewers call him the second female lead, haha since he's always with Young-joon and even interrupted smexy time.

Thanks for the recap! Dear lord, I haven’t seen PSJ kiss like that since Witch’s Romance.

I actually am liking how quickly problems are being addressed head-on in this show. I know it kind of makes for little-to-no overarching conflict, but for a nice, breezy summer rom-com I’m not complaining. Sure, sometimes I like my melodrama, but it’s also refreshing to watch characters behave like adults and actually work to listen and understand one another (instead of stretching issues out for three episodes longer than necessary just to fill the time). And for once I adore our side characters’ romances instead of fast-forwarding through them. They’re all too cute!

Whoo Hooo thanks for the fast recap @Lollypip!
I loved everything about this episode but above all I loved:
1. How she called him out on his pushiness and bulldozer attitude before she was ready.
2. How he immediately went to his best friend (BF EVER I might add) and tried to find a way to change so he could be a better man for the woman he loves.

Also, I'm enjoying the relationship growing between Ji-Ah and Gwi-nam is slowly developing. It is very sweet.

Yes, Woo Shik came to this knowledge through experience and YJ is the lucky beneficiary. Woo Shik needs to create a way to be with the ex-Mrs Woo Shik in order to put all that he's learned (I agree with @ally-le that it sounds like he's had a therapy guru) into practice for himself where he wants it, poor sweetie.

Love love love this episode and everything about it. Happy for Sung Yeon and the parents for repairing their relationship, and for the office staff... but most of all the strides that Young Joon and Mi So are taking both separately and together. And Yoo Shik... I hope he finds his love and that at some point theres a big old bromance hugfest between him and Young Joon.

And that last seen... I though Witch's Romance scene was hot, but this... this was gold. Park Seo Joon is really raising the bar on love scenes. And Park Min Young was just right there next to him taking it to the next level.

The romance developing Gwi-nam and Ji-ah has turned cute and plausible. Sure, his reason for being stingy is a good one. BUT, are we just supposed to forget how rude he was to everyone before that? Especially Ji-ah? Stashing all your money away for your future wife doesn't entitle you to have other people fulfill your takeout food dreams. Writer, I wish you were a little more consistent with this character.

I don’t think it’s inconsistent. Quite opposite, I see the theme, that every person’s bad characteristics stem from something plausible, is displayed in almost all characters in this drama. YJ the most extreme case, and his brother, his friend, and now GN. I don’t think they should be forgiven, but we can hate someone’s habits without hating the person. Because if we look hard enough, every person can have something lovable hidden.

*internalized misogyny alert*

Mi-so frustrated me so much this episode. Like, I saw Young Joons side so much more than I saw hers--I understand wanted to keep the relationship secret but for a lot of their relationship you'd think she was secretly married. She treats him like a side piece so often its unsettling, and I feel like THAT's what made Young-joon seem overeager when he wasn't. They literally were GOING to sleep together and then she pulled back completely for no reason other than, I guess, plot, and it was so frustrating to watch and I hate it EVEN MORE BECAUSE IT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I'M BEING A MISOGYNIST PUTTING MALE COMFORT AND PLEASURE OVER HERS BUT ALSO LIKE THE COMMUNICATION AND AFFECTION ON HER PART CAN BE SO ANNOYINGLY LACKING.

I want to see TWO people in love, not one guy pushing a girl that thinks he's alright.

I think the working closely part might be a reason in that she's been no nonsense Secretary Kim for nine years in their working relationship, and she reverts to that in her inexperience in the romantic relationship.

5

I don't understand why she's obligated to be on the same page at this stage in their relationship. For one, he's had more time to deal with, think about, and talk about his feelings for her--we spent the first how many episodes watching him sit on his "therapist" couch in denial about his feelings--she hasn't. While YJ has been encouraged to express how he feels about her from Wooshik, everybody Miso knows has told her, at least initially, to steer clear from him.

I don't think it's a matter of being comfortable with the relationship itself as much as her being comfortable with herself in the relationship. It seems so unnatural. She doesn't really seem to consider him nor does she want to. He's really trying to get them to a point where she can relax and be herself. She refuses just about every advance. So to see her now being willing to sleep with him is like,"Um..okay..."

Thats interesting. I do agree that Mi-Soo was probably not as communicative as she could have been, but i think them being in a relationship is a new territory. YJ has always been in the position of power in the relationship and Misoo has taken it. With the new relationship, i think she's also trying to figure out where does the boss end and where does the boyfriend begin. And I'm not sure how everyone else is, but if a guy was pushing on the sex all the time, I wouldn't be as excited about it either. I feel like its one of those things that need to come organically and naturally to be meaningful. And especially because its her first time, she wanted to be meaningful. Which is why i think when YJ shared the intention of why he wanted intimacy did she go all in. Those are my thoughts.

I agree with you! I got a little irked by how YJ kept being pushy even if I knew his intentions were good. I kind of understand why Mi-so would be a little put off by this; also given her circumstances like you mentioned above.

However, there is one particular thing that did frustrate me about Mi-so in this episode, and that's when she "apologized for not being considerate" of YJ's feelings.
What exactly was she apologizing for? Not being clear enough about what she wanted OR for not having sex with him before?
I just found it really weird and ambiguous, and I hate that part of the dialouge, because to me it seems that she is putting YJ's feelings above her own. It's almost like she is essentially validating his pushy ways from before. Like "Oh I was inconsiderate of your feelings and you got pushy, but now I'm here and ready to sleep with you. All good."
It feels like she is putting all the blame on herself.

I don't think it's her putting the blame on herself, but she does see how much he just wants to be with her, and that his feelings were real and more than just physical, which she didn't really consider. I think that's what she meant by not being considerate of his feelings and the manifestation of this was to spend as much time with her as he can and to be as close to her as physically possible. She didn't consider those actions as manifestations as those feelings. There's no blame, just that she didn't understand how passionate he was for her until this point and she just wanted to apologize for that.

Second part of my comment below may explain the apology (typed it before reading yours)

The way I see it, she never really considered his feelings. It is always YJ telling her what he feels. She excels at understanding and taking care of his professional needs, but rather lacking when we looking at their personal life. When all the past trauma was revealed, she sympathized like any person would. That is different than being considerate as a lover. We don't see her doing things out of the blue to make him happy. The heart-fingers is literally the only gift he ever got. Not that he is any better, but he does give it a hard try, although innately talentless in the dialogue department. He showers her with dates and gifts that he thinks she would like. That’s why I see a great imbalance in their relationship.

"She excels at understanding and taking care of his professional needs, but rather lacking when we looking at their personal life."

I'm not sure I 100% agree with you, because Mi So has always inhabited this weird kind of role as his secretary: she is like his "office wife," to an uncomfortable degree.

The show makes this behavior clear. Tying his ties - what professional secretary does that? It's bizarrely intimate and boundary-crossing. Holding his hanky for him, bringing him trays of tea and cookies, being on call all hours of night and day and weekends, too: these duties are like her being a traditional wife (or mother, ew) without the romance/sex/intimacy of being a wife.

So for her, I imagine it is very difficult to recalibrate; and I can also see why it is an easier step for him.

That said, I am cautiously glad she went to his house to take the next step, if she wants that relationship with him. I just hope she won't keep being his secretary, because it is just too weird.

3

I don't really blame Miso for being uncomfortable with the role switch. But I agree with others it's frustrating to watch. And it's not a misogynist pov that I see, it's actually the feminist me that it bugs. Like, take charge girlfriend! Don't passively let it happen or half-ass reject him. You know that self-absorbed bastard (sorry, language is my intensity indicator) is oblivious to your feelings. Give him an understandable sign for goodness. Grown women don't jump when a guy says come to my place, so shouldn't our finesse YJ-crisis-manager Secretary Kim.

Also, not that this is a flaw, but I feel that Miso has always thought less about his feeling than about her surviving the moment. It's natural, being his secretary is nervewrecking. As confident as she has become, she started out as a underqualified subordinate who could lose her job or be sent to India at the mercy of his majesty. Even as a lover, I think she's afraid saying no will upset him, not in terms of causing emotional pain, but may result in him ending the relationship immediately. Many women do fear that resisting sex can end a man's interest. What I don't like is she should know better, as in, she should know HIM better. But she doesn't. Not once in the 9 years prior to his courtship did she notice his sincerity. (And here I must say the other Sec Kim wins in high observance) He's said it very clearly that she is allowed to say no to him, but she's still doesn't, always just shifting direction with secretary tai chi.

i was also slightly annoyed with her but mostly because i think she wasn't communicating well, if she wasn't ready she should've been more clear about wanting to take it slower so that . i think taking care of her dad was a legitimate excuse and making time for her sister was important too especially since her sister had recently been persuaded to approve their relationship. what annoyed me in these instances is that she didn't explain to him what she was doing and why. she could've told him, "i need to have lunch with my sister because she has something important to speak to me about but i will spend the the evening with you and have dinner together" or "i do want you to meet my father but it will be better for you if we meet him together and after we've made plans for it". things like that are important to communicate so that he doesn't starve himself waiting for her to have lunch when she already ate or so that it doesn't seem like she is avoiding him or doesn't want to spend time with him.

Mi-so has only started liking him/loving him, while he has harbored feelings for her for at least 9 years. I think that's the difference between their actions in this episode. I can totally see things from her perspective because she is me and Young-joon is my husband in this episode. I'm very unemotional and don't show physical affection as easily, and it's just not as important to me. He's the sensitive one, the one that wears his heart on his sleeve, who wants to shout it above the roof-tops that he's in love with a beautiful woman, and it can be unsettling. So I pull back, and that's what she's doing. It's not that I love him any less, it's just a different way of showing affection. Mi-so is new to all this affection being showered on her, and she's understandably shy about it. And the first time is a HUGE step, and she probably wasn't ready because she didn't know exactly the depth of feeling or commitment he had for her--although, how could you not? I'm thick-headed and need everything explained and showed to me several times before it clicks, so I could really relate to her this episode.

You have a good point, and Mi So definitely doesn't seem to be a physical person. But that's not what annoyed me. If she wants to hold back and take it slow, that's ok and it's her right but it was her inability to talk to Young Joon about it that frustrated me. Her hiding and running from it really did seem immature to me. Even when he tried to talk to her about it she shut him down. It's that which annoyed me. She doesn't seem to trust him enough to be honest.

@kaeri23 Yes, to all of this! We're in episode 14 and I'm still unconvinced about this relationship. I feel like Young Joon just maintains the status quo for her. He's a guy she's familiar with, they get along decently, and she can keep doing work she enjoys. So it'll be okay. In the realm of K-drama, it's taking her an uncomfortably long time to be open with her feelings.

There's an argument though that this type of character is much more realistic and needed but I don't want to explore that because I'm frustrated with this show.

I felt severely annoyed at Mi Soo at first too, but upon rewatching and some hindsight can understand her POV. I think its cause some of us are very clear cut and to the point. If I consented to sex once it means I’ve made up my mind and want it; if I’m not ready I’ll decline and soften it with plenty of sweetness. A lot of people are simply not like that and while it frustrated me to watch this, I also better understood upon hindsight that a) Mi Soo is a virgin and is allowed to feel shy and b) In light of how she is treated in the following episode by the rest of the workforce, it reminded me that women in a relationship with a coworker will ALWAYS be regarded differently than their male counterparts, and who can fault her for protecting herself? Mi Soo being smart in thinking of the consequences.

Yet while I understand and empathize with Mi Soo’s responses, this part of the drama has brought up some serious societal concerns for me which I will continue to observe: a) the way assertiveness is taught to young boys and how it differs from what young girls learn, and b) that conscientious parents raise boys to be “gentlemen” and bring them up to look after the welfare of and take care of others, while these skills are underemphasized in young girls. Instead boys and girls are brought up with the implicit notion that young girls will grow up to take care of their male counterparts like mothers one day anyway and this hardwired into them, so they needn’t learn such practical skills

Young soon was being a bulldozer- he needed to slow down and pay more attention to Mi-so's discomfort. Mi-so needed to communicate that discomfort better - and finally did after a lot of avoidant behavior. Both got very sound advice- and in the end they have a much deeper relationship where each is now much more aware of how much they mean to each other. Even more important- they have gotten better at communicating with each other. I too was annoyed at Mi-so, but also a bit at Young-soon. But they both learned a lot so in the end this was a good thing.

As someone who is inexperienced and has a lot of anxiety around sex and how sex is just *expected* the older you get, it frustrates me how everyone is putting the blame on Mi So. YJ had 9 years to think through his feelings whereas it's all still very new for her. On top of that, first time sex is not particularly enjoyable for women so of course she'd be nervous and want to take it much slower.

She's still getting used to thinking of her boss as her boyfriend, how can she be so totally honest with him about such a personal thing? She doesn't need to be that blunt, he should just see that she's uncomfortable and doesn't want him to stay over or things like that. She made it very clear. Also, just the fact that everybody views having sex as the end-all-be-all-of-course-it-should-happen-because-theyre-adults and is inconsiderate of her feelings is enough to make her more anxious about it and not want to open up, especially to someone who is being so pushy.

The end of this episode was so uncomfortable because her sudden change of heart was just due to her feeling guilty and pressured because of what se ra said about what's normal and expected for adults and yeong joon saying she doesn't care about his feelings. And clearly society feels that way too since nobody in the comments seems to care about her feelings and are just glad she gave in.

I agree. Beanies seem to agree that 1. Mi So was nervous about moving into intimacy and 2. communication was bad on both fronts. So why are we praising the bedroom scene? If this was any other situation, a girl nervous about physical intimacy and not fluent in the subject to talk about it, the world would flip tables if the man had his way with her. It's fictional and a steamy scene like this seems rightfully climactic but I verbalized as Mi So was walking in, "she looks terrified."

I must be the only person who was annoyed by Mi So this episode. I don't think she communicated at all what she was thinking; she just ducked and ran and avoided the issue using excuse after excuse. I really thought she was immature when Young Joon was trying to talk about it and she told him it was embarrassing and vulgar.

I appreciate that Young Joon figured out he was being too pushy, and that he gave Mi So a very clear way to be either all in, or out. That was sexy and totally gave me Coffee Prince vibes. :D

Yes I agree, I was totally annoyed with her this episode! Like total lack of communication & consideration on her part. Like why couldn’t she tell him she was having lunch with her sister because she showed up unexpectedly, then she took her shopping afterward, so he wouldn’t be waiting for her for hours when she kept saying, “I’ll be right there”, I’m on my way”, which he naturally took her at her word. Just caused needless misunderstanding, and I totally get why he felt she didn’t consider his feelings like he was considering hers. But what frustrated me the most, and this happens way too often in kdramas, was her embarrassment and apparent “shock” at his suggestion of spending the night and their “unfinished business”. Her wide eyed, schoolgirl, naive, “oh that’s vulgar and how can you mention such things” reaction was just over the top! It really makes me cringe, especially as someone mentioned they would have give all the way before had they not been interrupted, now she’s acting all cold, coy and calling him a bulldozer? Quite unfair. Yeah I can understand it’s her first time & all but these are 30 something adults that have known each other for 9 years not 15 yr olds, it’s just the way she treated the subject and him about it. So that’s my only gripe, but I absolutely love everything else about this drama! Seriously love love it, and that last scene, whew, took my breath away!

As selfish as she seems, Young-joon is absolutely more so. Even when he was waiting for her, he was just saying how he is hungry waiting for his love, and how he’s sacrificing himself. When she comes back he assumes that she feels bad and bought a gift for him. It’s all about him this episode, he didn’t communicate that he wanted to each lunch with her. She had no idea that he was waiting for her to eat. He just assumed she was on the same page, not just about sex but everything else too. Communication issues 101.

I love their first night soooo much more than the original webtoon. In the webtoon Miso was half forced into her room and was a nervous wreck up to and even during intercourse. It didn’t make me dislike YJ, because despite the raging desires that he managed to lockup all his life, he kept asking her to say stop if she really didn’t want to go forward. It’s just that Miso was so undecided, feeling too awkward but wouldn’t say no, it made her a very weak-minded character. Miso (in drama) was ready. Even at the end of ep12 she was mostly ready and by the end of ep13 she was completely ready, and openly tells him so. She too plays her part to advance their relationship and, judging from YJ’s hickeys the next morning, Miso had an “active” part😈.

And omg PSJ’s physique *blush*

I could feel Mi So's growing discomfort when Young Joon kept pushing for the night and when Mi So finally compared him to bulldozer I was like, yes, that's how I feel as well... and I was glad she said it. But I also could feel Young Joon's growing frustration with Mi So and his hurt. Luckily they were able to solve this Mars-Venus problem (thank you, Yoo Shik and Bora) and when Young Joon showed that he is willing to wait and will respect Mi So's pace, Mi So was able to open up again. For whatever it's worth regarding the discussion of desire between Young Joon and Mi So: although the writing could have been stronger, it felt as though the episode wanted to depict how Mi So feels she is supposed to respond to sexual desire (especially her own) by policing it, rather than allowing herself to think about what she wants and when she wants it. In Ep 12, she actively kisses Young Joon as he undoes her blouse and she doesn't hurriedly button her blouse back up once he's gone (though she settles for loosely tying it). At the same time, as many have noted, her behavior veers toward passive. In Ep 13, it's when she hears another woman, Se Ra, openly express sexual desire and her intention to act on it that Mi So makes a decision to actively express her own. She both thinks AND behaves differently after that conversation. Couple that with Young Joon's subsequent recognition of her boundaries--that she needs to be equally involved in setting the pace--and her previous reticence and new reversal make a lot of sense. Again, I think the writing and direction could have implicitly made this clearer, but it recognizes the importance of the conversation with Se Ra and how the judgment of other women and female conversations play a huge role in these thought processes. After the two discussions, she openly articulates her desire to sleep with Young Joon and she equally participates in getting undressed. Rather than Mi So trying to hold Young Joon back, she seems to have been caught up in the preconception that she is supposed to hold off, until Se Ra essentially gave Mi So permission to abandon the idea that female desire is shameful. Mi So clearly does not think less of Se Ra for wanting to have physical intimacy with her boyfriend. Mi So seems more surprised that Se Ra demonstrates she can freely and happily pursue sex. Se Ra squeals about her hero, but she may be the real heroine.

I wouldn’t blame the writers. I mean, these are real life conflicts and actual feelings of the characters so I don’t see anything wrong with the writing itself. (I’m actually really surprised how well written this adaptation is since I found the webtoon very shallow and never addressed these character issues)

What I do want to say is, although finding Miso’s sexual struggles frustrating, Bulldozer YJ isn’t without his worth of nitpicks. His character is just blessed with a sensible BFF, and human-KY jelly, and he doesn’t have to search far for answers to his problems.

Her conversation with SeRa is so important in helping MiSo over whatever bump she was stuck on (I can think of so many things that could form that bump).

I wish I could recall the specifics, but this was the third time, I believe, that MiSo and Young Joon were in a situation where he said he would slow something down and she ended by speeding up to meet him anyway after she thought about it.

Her smile back at him from the doorway was everything. And when we saw her taking his tie OFF? Well, that was just everything and a half 💕💓💕💓💕

I disagree, I saw Mi So's change of heart after hearing Se Ra's comment as her conforming to society's expectation that she has to sleep with her boyfriend to keep him happy, combined with yeong jun's whining about she's not on the same page as him. She has no obligation to be on the same page as him and the only reason she got on the same page was because she felt guilted and pressured.

The relationships are what truly shine in this drama. Of course there's YJ and MS, who have, above all, pure love and understanding of each other. But MS's relationship with her father is what really touches me. MS loves her father wholeheartedly, despite having to work so hard to pay for his debts. And her father is apologetic but hopeless, and therefore overwhelmingly thankful and protective of his daughter. MS understands how her father feels, and they both share the pain from her mother's death. They could have hated each other, but instead, MS allows herself to be inspired by her father chasing after music instead of a steady career. It's utterly beautiful, and we can see this quality of character depth in almost every relationship formed in this drama.

there seems to be a theme in this drama where the guys are good at taking care of their girls and protecting them. Young-joon has been protecting Mi-soo since their childhood meeting and again when they meet as adults. it seems as though Young-joon even subconsciously repressed his feelings for her because he wanted to avoid anything that would contribute to her recovering painful memories. Cheol turns into a hero everytime Se-ra is in a scrape and needs saving. And as it turns out, Gwi-nam is so stingy because he is trying to protect and take care of his future wife and children. He is also starting to take care of Ji-ah which is why she is starting to fall for him. so many caring guys showing their feelings through actions!

on a different note, i would like to take a moment and express how much i like all of Mi-soo's earings...so dainty yet unique. i would wear a few of those pairs if given the chance!

While i like the discussion of intimacy among couples, i didnt really like this episode. Idk, the fact that theres no underlying plot and the whole episode was about the mains wanting to sleep together made me feel dirty for watching. Not that it was wrong what decisions they made or how they expressed themselves, but more like i was trespassing on their intimacy. Especially that last scene with PSJ taking off his shirt (yes you know what im talking about), it felt like fan service. (Was i the only one?)

I think there is a plot. Sex is it. They are both physically attracted to each other and it showed that miso even though she wanted to sleep with him was reserved and all that. Her conversation with bong sera helped her make her decision on what she wanted

I like the drama for showing real issues with relationships and communication, but I agree that the pacing has felt slow to me in the past few episodes, since the kidnapping plot cleared up.

Okay, Park Seo-Joon, I think I get it now. I get why he is so popular. I watched Youn's Kitchen and damn it if he did not charm the hell out of me on that show.

While I like his work as an actor, I now get it, you know.

*sigh*

I have mentioned my apprehension towards JiAh before about her now reading a room, but she truly annoyed me to the point of upset when she figured out about MS and YJ.

MS gave you hint after hint to drop it and that, 'I hate that I am smart' line on top of raising her voice to demand knowing about them, no. No, no, no, no.

I really think if MS did not decide to stay, JH would be getting fired because she is gonna upset the wrong person with her acts of dismissiveness.

She did it with plastic tie strings and she did it when MS told her to stop talking about it.

It just bothered me this episode.

I could have strangled her. I kept yelling "shut UP!" at the screen 😬 She was making my anxiety level so high! And it made me so much more wary of her ability to ever function properly as an executive secretary. Hellooooo, discretion is your best friend?

Ji Ah drove me crazy in this episode! She has been growing on my lately, but honestly she is way too stupid and immature to be a secretary of a VC! It's like LADY. SHUT YOUR MOUTH.

Seconding this. It's quite appalling that her friend would sneak a picture of Young-joon (it's not like she works for paparazzi), but even more so that Ji-ah would use it to go ahead and ask Mi-so about it. It's overstepping the boundaries of propriety and professionalism.

Was this in the webtoon? This entire episode was just him trying to sleep with her. Awk-ward. I kind of hated how Miso needed an external reminder (in the form of Sera) on how she should approach her relationship. It made it seem like she was conforming to societal pressure. As if she were wrong in not wanting to spend the night with her boyfriend. I was glad when Miso called Young Joon out for being a bulldozer. Is that devil supposed to be a penis? Or a hot dog?

Gwi Nam and Dad were really relatable today. When Gwi Nam said, "I live on $100 a month and invest the rest in stocks," that is the dream. And when Dad said, "If I had just become a doctor or judge," if only life were that easy. Dad's Beyoncé analogy caught me off guard. Yoo Shik needs to fire that girl.

Thanks for the recap, @LollyPip!

Oh, interesting. I didn't see SeRa that way at all. I saw her as Mi So's Woo Shik but more random. SeRa was like the life coach that MiSo needed to support her in the decision she wanted to make but was a little afraid of. Like a reassuring big sister or college friend (words I never thought I'd associate with SeRa, god knows) who says by example, I'm doing this and it's all good! If MiSo confided in her girlfriends, they might have served this function but she's too busy being "perfect" in front of them imo, and ditzy SeRa is just right to provide this advice unbeknownst to herself.

I thought that the bulldozer comment was perfect. But do not be too hard on Young-soon. He and Mi-so are very inexperienced about all of this. And two people in a relationship are seldom on exactly the same page- part of what everyone needs to learn is how to navigate that simple fact. Se-ra was actually perfect for Mi-so- who wants more in her life but has no idea what new attitudes are needed to get her where she wants to go.

If you’re asking if the whole “YJ trying to get laid” fiasco is a part of the webtoon? — yes it is, and a huge part. It did take a few nights (chapters) until they did it, but only because Miso gave in passively. Netizen have been asking, begging, and threatening tvN to not censor the bed scenes😂. And if I recall correctly, YJ said “let me know if it hurts”☺️, not “I love you” (which I think he said before long before this)

The naughty devil isn’t a penis, cuz she’s a girl😂

I agree, I felt like Se Ra's comment was just reminding Mi So that sex is expected from her and made her feel guilty for not sleeping with him. I really did not like this episode at all.

One thing keeps bothering me a from this episode. Those who have read the webtoon tell us that Woo-shik gets back together with his wife. But we did not see her at all in this episode. We did see Ma-eum tripping and dumping cake on her boss. It was funny- and even funnier when Woo-shik drags out his stack of dress shirts which he keeps on hand for when things like this happen. Was this simply to illustrate the point being made by Woo-shik? Or have the writers decided to depart from the webtoon to show us that Woo-shik is already adapting himself to a relationship with Ma-eum?

I kind of wanted Ma Eum to start liking Yoo Shik and realise how grossly incompetent she is so that I witness some character growth in her, cause man she seems pretty useless

The one problem that I had with Mi-So in this episode was that she was traeating Young Joon in a way for which I cannot find the words. Like the moment when she pushed Hardworking Cow off the bed and when she Woke up and realised she had fallen asleep when they were about to go ahead, she was behaving like she had made some mistake while working and was apologising to her boss. I realised in this episode that aspects of a relationship aside, had this drama had a concrete plot, I would have appreciated everything much more. Gwi Nam's reason for being frugal was so genuine. It kind of reaffirms my belief that a person who goes through things does not exactly need others' pity. They may be doing better than others think.

The final 2 scenes reminded me of the end of episode 17 of Coffee Prince. Where Eun Chan shows up at Han Kyul's house determined to spend the night. That scene is probably one of my all-time favorite moments in television history. It's so dynamic to have this woman unequivocally claiming her sexuality. She knew what she wanted and wanted to be respected for her decision. There was no hesitancy and so much certainty.

Kim Mi-Soo is an older woman than Eun Chan but I found her to be so unsure in herself. I do feel this week's episodes helped to prove that Kim Mi Soo does deeply care for Young Joon but I'm still not convinced she's comfortable in her relationship. (We see why in episode 14 though. ) Sharing yourself with someone is an unique experience whether it's the 1st or 30th. No one should define that for you. I guess my gripe is that, for me, Kim Mi-Soo comes off like she's proving something to herself or that she's simply checking off events on a schedule. I really want to see her comfortable.

Can I love this drama more? With my past experiences in dramaland, especially mainland China dramas, a drama that treats its leads like adults, where people actually communicated and TALKED, is so refreshing and welcoming I cannot but just love this drama. And the way sex and intimacy was handled, it was superb writing and directing, props to the team! Young-joon and Mi-so were not on the same page since the beginning, since he had been unconsciously caring for her previously and when they started their relationship, all his feelings just went BAAM, but Mi-so was still getting used to the boss to boyfriend switch. Add that interrupted smexy time and a week away from her, he just wanted to be closer to her, albeit a bit too pushy for wanting physical closeness when she wasn't ready. So, best advice from BFF Yoo-shik, don't push it, wait for her. The last scene was so well-done and classy. "We're on the same page now, and we're gonna take this to the next stage, on our own terms." I was screaming my head off in that scene, the chemistry is off the charts! And I'll say it, the best bed scene in dramaland ever!

I think you mean a billion won. 1억. A million won isn't that much, about at thousand USD.
