Beanie level: Errand boy

We have seen plenty of villains in our time and none has made me as mad as this girl! The audacity for her to feel that Ji Won will forgive her after everything is beyond me.

‘I thought she will come to me…’
‘She always did even when she was mad…’

I feel so bad for past Ji Won. But as the harabuji Chairman said ‘don’t blame your feet for stepping on crap’ also says a lot.

she deserves all the love as a villain. rarely seen a villain so infuriatingly perfect.

Apart from the tightly permed hair I proudly check ALL boxes.

The lack of permed hair is not due to lack of efforts. Two separate botched efforts by “professional” hairdressers made me wary.

          2
          1

I love the thought of you going to a hairdresser and asking for an ajumma perm. Sorry to hear about the botched efforts though. I hope they didn’t damage your hair.

Loose perm would be the only box I could tick so far. Unfortunately, the ajumma is tightly perm. It’s not even permed on my end. My hair has a mind of its own. I haven’t yet figured out what to do with it or how to tame it (currently floating somewhere around my skull with weird curly bits that are almost parallel to the ground and look like I’ve glued a nest of snakes to my head — I’ve met hedgehogs that were more elegant)

Ok, if I’m honest with myself, I might have the comfortable shoes (I work from home, you can’t get more comfortable than socks), stretchy outfit and matching optional (skinny jeans are definitely comfy and stretchy, and given that mos too my clothes are patterned nothing goes together), vest (yes, and then 12 jumpers on top because always cold), a visor (not quite, but does any type of hat count too? I’ve got a random collection, including a crocheted viking helmet that I wear with great pride and absolutely no sense of fashion whatsoever — my elderly neighbour is not a fan)

After careful considerations, it sounds like we could go as a pair of mismatched weird wanna be ajummas for Halloween. Ah no wait! I did propose last time. I brought the Nutella sandwich, I popped the question, you gave me the ring, I ate the sandwich; best proposal ever. So we could be the Valentine’s ajummas.

My hair is naturally wavy and I thought it would look more posh and sophisticated in a perm. The first hair disaster left me with only a quarter of the length of my original hair which took 2 1/2 years to grow back. Obviously, I didn’t learn anything from Einstein’s fake definition of “Insanity” and a few more years down the line tried the same thing with another even more expensive hairdresser, expecting different results. The difference this time was that the hair thickness was reduced one-sixth.

I love, love, love your “crocheted viking helmet“. I too would wear it with pride, if I had one. My “visor” is my umbrella (I can’t stand in the sun), a scarf wrapped around my head, followed by a cotton cap and then a woolen cap with as many colorful and mismatched pom-poms as possible which I attach myself.

YES, I will love to be the Valentine ajhumma and hang out with you. ❤

She is the most compelling antagonist I have seen in a long time. And she is acting the heck out of it.

    12
    2

I said it sometime earlier in the episodes that Marry My Husband is the drama that made me take particular interests in Song Ha-yoon and actually come to know that she has massive acting experience under her belt. She’s good. Too good.

I’m supposed to dislike her character. I do dislike and hate the character. But I have to give her the respect she deserves. She’s(Song Ha-yoon) perfect.

      10
      2

        Oh she is amazing! Amazing!

        7
        1

The way her brown eyes shone like clear amber during the lobby apology sequence was also simply captivating….

          6
          2

I loved Song Ha-yoon in Fight For my Way and also Oh! Youngsim (whatever little I saw of it).
        ** runs to hide! 🙈

        1
        1

When she’s being extra evil or seductive I keep thinking is this really the “sweet little pinky – i want to be a homemaker since i was six” from Fight My Way. She’s awesome.

          2
          1

🤣 I was eagerly anticipating her in OY … she has more than made up for any disappointment with MMH.

            0

      She sure is! Great actress!

      5
      1

She makes PMY’d acting look a bit weak. There are scenes where I am thinking why is PMY just randomly smiling now to look pretty. Doesn’t help she is dressed like
        A celebrity all the time.
While this woman is just being so openly vulnerable and honest about how low she went.

        9
        2

PMY has charm but she’s not a strong actress imo *runs to hide!*

          6
          5

Lol. yes. She is a romcom actor and a good one at that.
And you can tell that she is acting like she is in a romcom and the rest are in some melo makjang.

            8
            0

You can still feel she is PMY in almost all her projects. The only time I think she did a great job was in When the Weather is Fine, but I’m not sure if that has to do more with the ensemble.

            4
            0

But just to be clear, I think she is a “reliable” actress in terms of ratings: Who won’t want her in their projects if a certain number of viewership is guaranteed? I think she is also beautiful.

            5
            0

No need to hide. We all know that. She does only one type of acting. But that doesn’t mean she’s not believable in the role. She just always plays the same kind things, so I guess the only challenge (when she doesn’t decide to replace acting range with extreme dieting) is remembering her character’s name in each drama.

            4
            0

@darkcc you have analysed the PMY conundrum perfectly.

            2
            0

I was put off by PMY’s character’s random smiles. I was like “Why? Does it serve a purpose?”. Sigh. Watching her, I missed those actresses who can do microexpresssions well and don’t mind being less pretty to play the character. In real life, being able to smile when speaking is a lovely trait but only at the right moments. The way PMY speaks (how her lips move) is also a little too mannered. Maybe it’s just her natural feature but it doesn’t help her in acting.

          1
          1

The random smiles are a LOT! I always think ‘what’s so funny did I miss something?’

Doctor Slump had an old school feel to it. And by that I mean no time travel, reincarnation, or past life trope 😂

Also PSH looks exactly like she did in Heirs! Always enjoy seeing PHS on screen! Bring on episode number 2!

Hope it stays with that old-school K-drama vibe.

It was the best “teenagers” played by adults I’ve ever seen. The nailed not just the look but also the body language and vibe. 😊

Yes! After a long time the teen years didn’t look like they were obviously played by adults! Looking forward to the next episode.

Wow SooMin is just pure evil. I wonder how she sleeps at night! Probably soundly since she thinks she can do nothing wrong.

That hair pulling scene was everything! Go Ji Won!!

Well… Yes. She’s one evil mean manipulative cow bitch face.

But it is her point in the story. She has to be evil, and somehow, she does point out that Ji-won let her become and stay that way (which is incredibly self-aware of her and, while it is shameless af, it is also true).

I find she is gorgeously portrayed. All the little tantrum-esque evil touches and the fake charming!

I’m still not convinced by Min-hwan. He just seems like such a feeble and insignificant obstacle to me… which is why I need even more of Soo-min because she has to be openly evil for 2 right now. The girl is working overtime!

    5
    3

I don’t know what two women saw in Him! I wish they wrote him to be competent at work and manipulative and abusive on the sly. Right now there is nothing about it that makes him a man who two women fell for.
Also the actor – I am so used to his comedic chops I can’t take him seriously.

      4
      3

I need to check the webtoon for more info on his character. He doesn’t have that predatoriness about him that I expected from the synopsis. But he does have plenty of charm and we clearly see that he’s done his research on how to seduce women (assuming he was 8 when he did said research and never re-evaluated his findings)
I’m surprised that his technic works, but perhaps only on Ji-won who didn’t know any better then and on Su-min who wants everything that Ji-won has…

        1
        1

If you notice him, every time Ji Won says anything he doesn’t like. he berates her or puts her down subtly. He intentionally took advantage of her naive nature

          2
          0

And everytime he says “gwaenchanha” it’s difficult not to 🙄

        0

I don’t think Soo Min would have given him the time of the day if it wasn’t for Ji Won. She is interested only because she wants to feel good about the fact that someone in a committed relationship would still want her.

Min Hwan is the classic entitled and spoiled only child who is also a son. He has never been called out on anything and thus rationalises everything that he does.

      3
      1

Oh shit, why didn’t I see it? You’re 100% right. My uncle is the same despicable character (minus the sexy times)… I completely missed the self-entitlement of the spoiled only child! 🤦🏻‍♀️

The person portraying her is such a great actress. Those tiny whines and trying to be cute makes my blood boil! Then I take a moment and send cudos to the actress for inciting such feelings.

I built up the courage to rewatch My Mister
I’m a little over halfway though.
I forgot how beautiful that drama is. It’s a masterpiece in every respect. Every word seems to have been painstakingly crafted.
    Lee Sun-Kyun was brilliant.
This was my path to healing.

I saw him first in Coffee Prince – my ultimate favourite- and sometimes I would watch clips of it on YouTube/Netflix from time to time and I know I won’t be able to do it for a long time. His death was simply unfair. He didn’t deserve to go like this.

I gave up on the bean count… I’m not in the mood as well…

Happy Belated Birthday Ren. It’s just very sad rn. Plus reading the updates on his case is agonizing, they could’ve treated him so much better.

    2
    1

Except Flowers in Sand, I haven’t watched any kdrama since. I can’t bring myself to watch any shows without thinking about LSK. Sad part is that I don’t expect anything to change. It will just be another life lost.
I think how I view dramas/actors definitely has changed. I don’t know if it will spark the joy it used to. Atleast not in the next coming weeks.
I have always been someone who never watched BTS, interviews, reality shows of actors, followed them on social media etc. I never cared about their personal life. For me a drama was just a drama (unless someone committed a huge crime esp sexual assault and beanies talk about it on the wall, I would never know otherwise. Then I will choose my dramas wisely).
But this hits different. Every time i see an actor, I feel like ‘What are these people going through to find this fame?’

    3
    1

Exactly! I feel everything you have said! The price of fame is just too much of a burden to carry in SK. Who else are we going to lose forever like this? My head hurts.

Celebrities worldwide are hounded and surely suffer a lot of non-job related stress but the Korean celebrities seem to be stressed ×1000 times more. Why aren’t more people emphasizing on mental health support for them. The punishment he had to undergo and probably what his family will have to undergo their entire lives is heartbreaking. Surely that is not commensurate to the alleged “crimes”.

    7
    1

Imagine someone as famous as him wanting to end his own life in a car park like this. He must have been at the point of no return. The price of fame is way too much of a burden to carry in SK 🙁

      7
      1

He was a grown man, in the industry for more than 20 years … still no one was able to reach out to him. Too much of a burden indeed.

Unpopular opinion…(and it looks like I have had too many unpopular opinions these days) I really liked the core story of Moon in the Day. Was it perfect? No. Could some parts have been done better? Absolutely. But I liked that the writers didn’t force them to be together in the end. I think it was done very well! 👏🏽

I’m in the mood to earn another bean. 14 hours is less than two work days, right … right?

    5
    1

I’m glad you liked it. ^^
    I enjoyed this show too.
It was cute, it made me laugh, and maybe it’s because it didn’t try too hard to be cool or something, but I also didn’t try too hard to think about it and it’s problems. It was consistent in its craziness.

And it made me earn a bean! That’s a lot more of other 30 shows I tried to watch this year. Or even better I watched it finished it, and didn’t hate myself for it. That’s just perfection in vocabulary.

—I just finished Soundtrack #2 so I’m a little salty about annoying endings. LOL sorry.

        I hope you enjoy it!
I started it yesterday (or maybe two/three days ago), and I watched the four episodes in one sitting. Today (yesterday) we had the last two.

        1
        0

I have not watched it yet – but I’ll keep your words in mind when I do & see whether I agree.

I agree, however, that not forcing people to be together should also be an option as long as it makes sense and is well executed.

It’s a completely different drama and plot, but this reminds me of Possessed where there is no happy ending for nobody, but in the midst of it all, the lonely paths they end up choosing (being pushed into) are all the more meaningful. And this also did not need a happy ending because the story never called for it (we, viewers, did, but that’s not the narrative’s problem)

    1
    1

But we do have a happy ending here. More like a satisfying closure. You need to see it to understand it I guess. I don’t want to spoil it more for you! Watch it!

I am looking at all of your love in the fan walls and I am trying to understand why I am feeling the opposite. I am really ‘meh’ about My Demon. I feel the only plus is all the pretty. They are very pleasing to the eyes BUT I JUST DONT SEE ANY CHEMISTRY!!! Help me!!!!

They look like cousins. Song Kang was fire in Nevertheless even though I didn’t like the drama as such and I have liked our heroine paired up with everyone she was worked with except for in Rookie. I just don’t see it! Help me see it!!! Jebal!!!

4
5

Once you see family I’m not sure you can ever go back, lol.

To me they don’t look alike so that helps.
I just completely believe that they both see each other as very attractive. It started with our FL and the way she would look at him even when he was being jerk. I just believed she thought he’s an ass, but also damn he is hot. She looked at him like he could get it. 🤷‍♀️

He of course just saw her as a pesky human and was above all that. Then it turned sweet. He is definitely playing it like he thinks she is lovely. But also he just glows when she shows up, like a plant turning towards the sun. And now all the skinship he does.

I just realized they took two different paths. She liked him physically first and now emotionally and he liked her emotionally first and now physically.

I know I should probably give SamDal a try but I also don’t want to be associated with ‘healing/jeju island/village is best’ dramas…what a dilemma…

11
6

I’m having trouble mustering any enthusiasm to start it. The recap and early comments didn’t make it sound appealing. I might try waiting a couple weeks, skipping the episodes and just reading recaps, and then dive in.

      0

It sounds like I’m not the only one who didn’t like Our Blues?! I’m having trouble starting Samdalri t too and keep putting it off. But I think it’s more about new drama fatigue than anything else.

    4
    3

Yeah Our Blues was a quick drop for me.

      1
      0

I don’t particularly mind the theme of the healing village in dramas. In real life not so much. While I would love to live in such a picturesque place, the constant nosiness of the neighbors would drive me up the wall. I’d probably escape to the city to get some peace and quite.
I am looking forward to Samdalri though because of the leads. Haven’t started it yet since I was waiting for CD to finish.
I dropped Our Blues because it was too heavy for me at the time. Hope Samdalri is lighter.

New drama fatigue definitely is my case.

Why is My man is Cupid so disjointed? I can’t make sense of it. Anyone else on the same boat?

4
3

Yes! I simply cannot keep track of what’s going on. There are a couple of scenes I’ve rewatched two or three times and I still don’t understand what happened – the Joseon flashback, for example. And the show is (so far) not worth that effort, so I don’t know why I bother.

    1
    1

Hmm. I think I will drop it.

      0
      1

Same. I don’t find it disjointed but rather bland. Towards the end of episode 2 the leads showed some good moments. Other than that it’s really – just there. Like someone is going through the motions directing a show.
I might watch another episode when bored just for the leads and see if their interactions are any good.
It should have been a drop at Ep 1

      3

I wouldn’t recommend this show to anyone 🙈. I found it too low-budget (at least apparently). In Spain we say “cutre” when a TV show is a cheap production and it’s noticeable, but I can’t find a proper word in English. I mean… I’m totally ok with low budget shows if the script and acting are good, and director pays attention to the details (details which usually provide quality to k-dramas and here they are conspicuous by their absence). But if you love soap operas and makjangs and you don’t mind them being a little cheesy, then you can give it a try and you will probably like it. Many beanies loved it 🙂
I was ready to enjoy this drama, but I couldn’t.

      2
      1

I understand what you mean. I wouldn’t say that this is in my top list but this was surely the most enjoyable satisfying drama I have ever watched!

        3
        1

I’m glad you enjoyed it! ☺️ For me… this has been the most painful way of earning a bean (at least there were only twelve episodes).

Now I guess I’m prepared to resist FOMO when all the beanies start to talk about Marry my husband. I like the cast, at least I know all of them (PMR was full of actors I didn’t know), but I should avoid the makjang genre.

          1
          1

This is the other end of the spectrum for sure, but I will give it a chance. Of course one’s genre and acting biases influences one’s enjoyment or lack thereof. I can’t recommend Behind Your Touch, for example , but I am not sorry I watched it. Thanks for the input, Beanies!

I wonder how they film those underwater scenes that we keep on seeing on each and every drama nowadays. Of course I know it’s cgi (duh!) but how do they create those sequences? Do the actors jump from a cliff while being filmed? 😂

Don’t get me wrong Castaway Diva is nice and endearing but it all seems like fantasy to me. First of all 15 years is a long long time! Too long to live on your own as a young person. And as a former singer I know how important it is to ‘work’ on your voice. Not once have we seen a vision of her singing on that island. How did she retain this gift living in those hard conditions? How come she has acclimated to living normally so easily? And why doesn’t the vision of the sea/ocean traumatise her? Why doesn’t the thought of eating potatoes make her barf? Why isn’t she in therapy? It’s way too unreal to enjoy with a logical head.

9
22

    15 years: Way to long
I suggested she swam ashore with her guitar in a case.
Her playing was inspired by sea and wind .😀
Her singing was inspired by screeching seagulls, (think Yoko Ono) ☹️
It is best not to think too much about her island life 😂

    8
    0

Well, it is fantasy (I think Park Eunbin explicitly said something like that too xD ..I need to look that up), it’s not real, and it almost feels like a fairytale sometimes lol

The list of unrealistic things and unlikely scenarios is really long, but the story still works for many. Of course it’s not gonna be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s ok 🙂

    3

I understand it’s supposed to be a fantasy, but one of my biggest issues with it is that it’s not fantasy enough. There’s far too much real-world context that drags down the quasi-magical elements so that they just seem unrealistic rather than imaginative.

I just reimagined this as similar to the Wizard of Oz , when Dorothy wakes up and sees everyone .. You were there ! And you !
It was all just a dream …. Or was it.

Hey, I get it…it can feel like they’re trying to do both, be grounded and realistic while painting some pretty unlikely scenarios at the same time.
The point is that different people can perceive the same story in different ways.
For me personally this balance is just right and I’m enjoying it immensely!! I don’t mind some aspects of the story that are potentially unrealistic because I am invested in the characters enough to forgive those minor (for me) details. For others it is different, I got that now ahah!

P.S. There is one thing I wanna say in favor of the drama, regardless of preference, and it’s the fact that it’s been consistent since day 1 with it’s themes and tone, it’s not like it suddenly changed midway.
Since the first episode we were shown a juxtaposition of the carefree life of the teen protagonists (Mokha shooting her MV felt very dream like, to me), with the abuse they were experiencing on the side. Maybe it was too good on its own and it made some viewers get their expectations too high for the following episodes? Not sure xD

            @johnb
Don’t even say it!! “while you were sleeping part 2” xD
The thought crossed my mind! What if this is all a product of Mokha’s brain after spending time alone for far too long?!?! Then at the end she wakes up and it was all a dream?!! Or maybe Kiho’s dream, because of how much he misses her! I would riot with such a twist!! lmao
            Speaking of unrealistic ahahah!!

The trick for me is suspension of disbelief with the plot premise even before diving in. How different can this fantasy wirh reality elements is with for example, a story about a human turning into a dog when kissed? That has unbelievable plot premise with elements of reality too but I see no one raising an issue about it. What about superstrong families, or ability to go back in time to 1995? That castaway island is just exactly like that.

The real life elements are too real to be fantasy. Time travelling/ghosts and vampires/magic are not real. Being stranded on an island for 15 years is very much real. That FedEx guy.

People. Please stop insulting fantasy. Fantasy has rules and logic. The premise and the place and the creatures might be different in that genre but they still exist inside a logical universe.

Yes, fantasy is different because dragons and fairies and magic spells don’t exist in real life, at all.

This is not fantasy because it’s still possible for everything that has happened to actually happen in the world we live in.
Is it unlikely? A lot of times yes, but still possible.

That’s my take at least 🙈

I believe it’s “fantasy” in the same way that winning the lottery and being set for life is fantasy, if you want 😁

What I find most unbelievable is that she has no problems with a large gathering of people. I’m sure that after 15 years on a desert island, I would feel uncomfortable if there were suddenly so many people around me and so many noises and other sensory impressions were bombarding me.

As a singer: Honestly, this may sound awful but imo Lee Re is a better singer than Park Eun-bin so it works for me: her voice is good, but not as good as it used to be. I think it’s more fakey that she got as good as she did living with an abusive and clearly unsupportive father who I doubt would shell out money for voice lessons, in the first place.

As a psychologist: it does require suspension of disbelief (I personally think that the drama has consistent internal rules even if they don’t match up with reality, like Lelly said), but people are pretty resilient. She wouldn’t necessarily have long-standing psychopathology or PTSD symptoms just because she experienced a traumatic thing; PTSD is actually the more rare response.

I remember as a child I had jaundice once and my mum would cook this fish thing without spices to feed me (apparently it was good for me). I think I had jaundice for 2 weeks, maybe? I was 14 at that time and I am almost 41 and I still haven’t touched that popular fish. It’s definitely not PTSD. It’s just that I avoid that memory.

15 years alone in a deserted island. Unless she got truly comfortable with her surrounding I don’t see how she is flaring so well in real life.

Oh wow. I had jaundice for a long time and they used to give me fresh sugarcane juice. Till today I can’t drink that juice. Just the thought of it makes me nauseous.

listen, the only fantasy in there is a 31 year old getting a break from top agencies that too in the cut throat idol competition… and a much bigger fantasy is die hard fans waiting for a newbie

    😛

I did find this bit comical too! Then again, I feel like maybe soloists play by separate rules to idols, especially in terms of the age thing. Like if you debut as a soloist and you’re a pretty strong performer you’ve got a reasonably steady future vs members in an idol group who have to fight against time to establish the group & themselves or they run the risk of fizzling out when newer groups come in.

Admittedly I don’t know much about the S Korean entertainment industry, but it probably helps that she has a gimmick (feels awful to reduce her experience to that, but that’s showbiz I guess)

I am actually liking Moon in the Day. It’s different…nice even…who else is watching?

I have fallen (belatedly) in love with Moving for now. But Moon in the Day is on my must-watch list. I just haven’t got to it yet. How good is it so far?

Also…. This could be because I am spending hours watching and ranting/commenting on Perfect Marriage Revenge (and nothing is more irritating to me that wanting to rant and actually not finding any grounds for it…) This sounds like a silly excuse but it’s around 3 hours watch for 2 episodes and probably another 3 to shape up my thoughts. It’s a humongous amount of time in my already-packed-with-lots-of-other-shits week!

But give me a few weeks and I’ll join you watching MinD!

Looks like I have many dramas to watch – Moon in the Day, The Matchmakers, Castaway Diva, Live your Own Life, Daily Dose of Sunshine, Good a day to be dog…speaking off what’s happening with Good Day? Did they cancel? Why are there fewer episodes?

It is one episode a week and it has been cancelled twice due to other events. Hopefully from next week it will be back on its slow and steady once a week drop schedule.

The broadcaster has assigned Dog with a horrible schedule with many preemptions due to sport events. Very sad 😔

I wish the schedule was 2 episodes before the bye week . happy compromise !
That would shorten the run and still may require exemption for events?
Aigoo. Unfortunate draw of the straw . It’s a cute show. Probably be ideal to binge watch once it is over.
