The Korea Herald reported on SK’s film industry is at a major crossroad. The industry is still reeling from the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Major studios have have a series of big budget box office losers. Only a handful of Korean movies made any profit in the last two years. Streaming platforms are making theaters increasingly obsolescent, and risk-averse investors are gravitating toward safe bets, with remakes, sequels, and adaptations stacking up one after another. In a telling sign for major contraction, Korea's five major production houses have only green-lit ten projects exceeding 3-billion-won ($2 million) budget for 2025.

For major production financier CJ ENM, the project "No Other Choice" is a high-stakes bet as insiders believe the studio's entire film division reportedly hangs by a thread after a string of expensive post-COVID flops. This adaption from the novel and movie “The Axe” stars big names, Lee Byung-hun with Son Ye-jin, is one of their only two CJ films to be released in 2025. CJ did not release actual production costs for this movie, but it is believed that this film will need at least 3.5 million admissions or more to break even.

CJ invested and is distributing “Harbin,” which needs 7 million admissions to break even. It was released (unopposed) on December 24 and it hit the 3 million mark after 9 days. However, January will have several new film releases, Insiders believe this competition will make it difficult for “Harbin” to reach the break even mark.

Of course, there are exceptions. Bong Joon-ho's long anticipated follow-up to his Oscar-winning "Parasite" is the $150 million Warner Bros sci-fi blockbuster “Mickey 17” starring Robert Pattinson Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffaloe. It opens on March 7, 2025. This film will have a global Hollywood release so its budget and box office will eclipse any 2025 Korean film.

Weekend update: the 19+rated movie HIDDEN FACE ended its wide release run at 1 million admissions, the first time in 5 years such a rated movie reached that box office total. However, it fell short of breaking even. However, late this week the film investor reported that the movie did break even when it licensed it to an unnamed OTT for approximately $2M(US). I doubt it was a domestic or Asian OTT based on the film content. It will be interesting to see which platform will show the film.

Also, OTT licensing after theater runs can be film producers second chance card to "get out of debt." This practice has been going on for a long time, but with a retraction on productions, OTT's may shift to licensing finished films than spending money making them since licensing like in this case was cheaper than producing it.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

🎆🥂Happy New Year! 🥂🎆

So last OT I said I would be carpooling on New Year’s Eve, right? Well, that did not happen. My driver happened to be warrior friend. For those who do not know her, she is a kidney patient that also battled and survived cancer and a few comatose periods.

Her mom called me last Sunday in a frenzied state to alert me that I would not be able to carpool with her daughter ‘because she is in surgery right now’.😮 Of course, I quickly dismissed the carpool concern. First of all, I usually go there by train, so I would manage. Secondly, and most importantly, what do you mean by surgery⁉️😱

Forgive me for jumping to the worst conclusion warrior mom, but your phone calls about your daughter are rarely good news.😕

Until now! Warrior mom quickly cleared up the misunderstanding and announced that she was finally undergoing kidney transplant surgery!🥳 They got the call last Saturday evening and the hospital ran some tests before proceeding to make one person healthier and a lot of other people, me included, happier.🥹

Viki, you know I love you, but can we talk for a sec? Just because a drama stars a current or former idol, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is an “idol drama”. It has to be legitimately about idols for that to be a helpful label. Jebal. Let Me Be Your Knight is an idol drama. Namib is an idol drama. Heck, I would even accept <My Lovely Liar as an idol drama. But Hotel del Luna? Nope. The Red Sleeve? Not even close. Happiness? Check again. Maybe we could think about relabeling some of these? For me? Pleaseandthankyou.

Ahahaha, omg! Viki totally caught it from cdrama side where idol drama means simply pretty (usually romance) show with pretty stars with big fanbases, but that makes no sense since kdramas have no such distinction whatsoever.

I didn’t know this label meant anything like this for cdramas, but it makes way more sense if it’s a weird crossover thing…

For Kdramas I think Idol is used differently than for Cdrama. It's just that an idol stars in the the show.

I think you and Unaspirated could be kinda right. Because till now it's like they're using the label in a random both ways.

But the thing is that they do not label ALL dramas with idols like that, so it feels pretty arbitrary.
Rowoon is or was an idol but I don't remember that label in the Matchmakers. I don't think you'll see that label in Penthouse (because of Eugene) or Happy Ending (because of Na Ra) either. So why Happiness? And The Red Sleeve!? LMAO 😂
A sageuk idol drama, I wanna see that.

Maybe they just put the label on the drama of their faves? 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks!!! <3

3

It is arbitrary. I don't think it's used as a genre like with C dramas, if you want to call it that. It's more like casual marketing or as a description. If you google "Idol Drama" King's Affection is in the list.
It would be like if korean soccer was a gateway to acting you'd call their dramas soccer dramas. Or Football dramas i guess.

I just put the filter for Idol drama and you're totally right, it's definitely about the cast not a real genre.

4

Such marketing still makes a bit of sense when drama in question is a primary romance with heartthrob idol actor ML, but when it's not... idk, I really don't see why HAPPINESS (zombie thriller where you cannot guess a former (!) idol in ML even if you try very hard) should be on that list. Hyungsik's idol era fans didn't care much for it notably.

@attiton is right, HWARANG was full of idols AND marketed itself as idol youth drama. I think plenty of youth romance sageuks did it too by intentionally casting trendy idols to get their fanbases/target audience on board. But lumping all once-idol-actors together into one category is not smart at all - some of them had nothing to do with their kpop roots in any way for DECADES...

I agree!
In this reddit discussion (https://www.reddit.com/r/CDrama/comments/1c4azpi/comment/kznj5n0/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button ), this person made a comment—quote— “Idol drama is not a genre, it is about how the content being delivered as a show.” — and I totally agree!! In C-dramas, it’s more about how the drama is delivered and promoted —the vibe and feel, for lack of a better word— that determines if it’s an idol drama rather than who is cast

I started with k dramas so when I went to C dramas the "idol" label confused me. At first I thought it meant the actors had been idols, lol.

Required fields are marked *

That’s totally fair!
When the concept of “idol drama” first became a thing in the early 2000s (at least, that’s how early I remember it being), it was referred to that because Kpop idols were transitioning in their careers of music and going into acting whilst still keeping their Kpop idol’s packaging, image, activities, etc., and in that sense, I think that’s also why or where the thought of “idol dramas aren’t the best” are bad is because said “idol” cast in the drama cannot make a decision to commit to one thing in their career and so one or the other (most likely the acting) is going to flop, in addition to the “idol” not having an acting degree— the last point being a very eye-roll inducing elitist snobby way of thinking (as is with many things in S.Korea). I’m glad that the tide has turned now and “idol drama” isn’t the gut reaction that many people have anymore about a (former) “idol” being cast in a drama

2

For non-singer "idol" actors in c-ent I prefer term liuliang aka "traffic star" (the one with big dedicated fanbase), it makes a clear distinction that label is based on specific kind of image/popularity/following and not pop-music association.

4

This is exactly my confusion! I only watch kdramas, so the only use of “idol” that I know of is from kpop idols. And it seems like all of the kdramas viki is labeling like that star former or current idols, but not all of the kdramas that star idols are labeled that way, so I just figured it was incomplete or wrong. But if it’s an actual meaningful label for cdramas, that makes way more sense. And I still don’t want it on most kdramas 😂

I thought a moment of "not answering, just blinking" was quite fun and substituted the drama soundtrack with (discreet ) explanatory comic strip graphics in a gif. Now I am not sure which one is better - if you have an opinion, please give it here:

Also, Question:
If you hold
one hand in front of you, loosely as if you carried a tray, and
the other hand on it, folded as maybe a fist or miming that it holds something ,
and then moves the loosely folded hand to your chin, (not mouth. Chin.
what does that mean?
I have searched online to find an explanation, but I only find the same most common hand gestures again and again, like "come", "go", "drink", and "call me".

Google's AI Overview
A fist gesture starting from a flat hand up to the chin in Korean culture is typically interpreted as a gesture of "thinking" or "contemplation"; it signifies someone is pondering something deeply, almost like "scratching their chin" with their fist.

Key points about this gesture:

Meaning:
It's not considered a negative gesture, but rather a sign of thoughtful consideration or deep thought.

Execution:
The hand starts flat, then slowly curls into a fist as it moves up towards the chin area.

Context matters:
Depending on the situation and facial expression, it could also be interpreted as mild skepticism or uncertainty.

This is what the computer who has read the internet guesses.

If the googling has hit the spot, it would be the sceptical, like in "Hah! As if!" meaning. It's when Tae-ung says: "But what if you lose her to another man?", and Unfairman laughs it off. (He was rattled for a second, though.)

Happy New Year and First Friday of 2025, Beanies! Pls sit down comfortably because we're having a massive concert tonight)))

Starting with the last OST of 2024 for iQiyi's THE WIND GOES BY “I once walked through the night” - a very nice track, sentimental and pleasant, making a great closure, imo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKtQuSgaNXc

Then Yuning's appearance on last episode of music variety HIT SONG 2024 – a collab stage with Galaxy Express band for their song “Blank space”. Actually he's huuuge fan of theirs and this particular track, even playing it during his livestreams and bugging the composer to make something like this for himself – to no success so far lol. Gotta say, they sound nice together, tho his part is relatively tiny and overall the song is way too high, even when he used his “feminine register”. I love that pastel blue blazer as well, such a good and soft color for him:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVbiH8fc7-M

Next segment comes with nosebleed warning because we've had rockstar!Ning-ge back for a while, and more rude than ever, at Douyin Wonderful Surprise Night. For real tho – this may very well be his hottest event look in entire year, even above all-white silver wig one, and you probably remember how much I salivated over loved that... Look at all back leather! And his hair! Not to mention glitter everywhere – from eyes all the way down cleavage... Give his stylist a bonus asap! He performed 2 (and a half) tracks in that deadly styling – first another rendition of “Galloping away” (there's still no official upload of these on YT so forgive me for DY links):
https://www.douyin.com/video/7453458900369542460

And then the song (mid-event lineup-wise!) after which I was like “now everyone can 100% go home, the night has peaked already” - Chinese-Japanese cover of Ikimono-gakari's megahit “Blue bird” (NARUTO SHIPPUDEN OST – omg, the flashbacks! I still remember most of it, ha!) in duo with Yuning's new friend Miyavi. Who surprised me with not only his impressive guitar skills and conversation level Mandarin, but also being a total riot: in his interview backstage dude praised Ning-ge to the moon and back for being “handsome, gentle, nice and reminding former of his ex-girlfriend” (personality-wise? lmao, bro, keep it going!). Shameless troll flirting and occasional head-mic problems aside, these two burned the stage, wow! Gotta say, Ning-ge totally needs to hang out with his brethren in metal more, all those super civil and self-conscious mainland popstars are too proper company for this feral child... Look how he shines, it's not just glitter!

Not be that person, but here Yuning does indeed look babygirlish... must be the hair bringing out soft prettiness of his features))) *hollering at their Weibo exchange all over again – Ning-ge being all “bro, are you for real?!” and absolutely undeterred Miyavi*
https://x.com/Bigsislilred/status/1873775923671294230

The half I talked about – semi-impromtu stage with kids choir (?) of his own song “Ray of light in the dark” (I'll never be tired of listening to it!). Apparently these babies also covered “Offer” etc on sns, forgot what second song of his was mentioned... As usual, self-proclaimed future girl dad has been super cute with kids despite struggling so much to lower himself to their eye level)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZQnrDMHRak

Next is 3 (!) different New Year galas – two pre-recorded and one live, starting with the former. First was CCTV one recorded a week ago at outside arena in a freezing weather (cue tons of fancams of poor Yuning trembling from cold and stumbling on slippery from snow stage), he sang 1 song there in a pretty and festive but useless at keeping him warm bright red suit - “The light closest to the sun”. I like the register for it, so nicely deep:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY15R8EaCoo

Then BeijingTV, which also aired at 31st, with another red suit (Gucci edition, slightly lacking tailoring, if you ask me, but it helped him stood out among other performers – even more, I mean^^) with also already familiar to you “10 li of spring breeze don't compare to you”:
https://x.com/LYNThailandFC/status/1874078233106538788

And “Even wild lilies also have a spring”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRMlfSZ9NxU

Finally we'll get to Jiangsu TV stages, which he decided to make liveX2 by also personally livestreaming his part of it, starting with dressing/makeup/standby chatter (feat Richie Ren and Liu Duanduan chiming in) and even bringing his own recording phone on stage! Network must be really fond of him to allow all that... Ofc, it wasn't without hiccups – for example, the phone stand nearly fell mid-performance, only saved by Yuning's long legs and quick reflexes in time while main camera focused on backup dancers. Can't say I'm a huge fan of this particular outfit – fluffy Pierrot-like collar is cute, but otherwise I'm not vibing with those “grandma Chanel” jackets... this one at least is funny with garland-like details. We've got 3 songs this time! “Hardworking people” - I have a feeling it's gonna be his next go-to track for maaany patriotic-themed official events to come (not sure how I feel about adding contemporary dancing to it – performers are good, but...):

Then “Toast the wine” (TOMB OF THE SEA – his first-ever OST), courtesy of freshly debuted Guzhuang Brothers band consisting of his previous costume drama characters: Hao Du (THE LONG BALLAD) – pipa/backup vocal, Bai Choufei (HEROES 2022) – flute/backup vocal, Ning Yuanzhou (A JOURNEY TO LOVE) – guqin/backup vocal, Yan Zijing (THE STORY OF PEARL GIRL) – erhu/backup vocal and, ofc, Liu Yuning the singer as main vocal.
https://x.com/LYNThailandFC/status/1874101935890186580

Damn, that really got me in the feels, especially reciting their iconic lines and bowing in the end((( The way all of them still sound in character tho...
https://x.com/fandoestrans/status/1874208851823911395

And final one for tonight – another well-known to you MELODY JOURNEY tune “Everytime I” with Lars Huang and HK star Karen Mok. For which Ning-ge, like a diva he is, changed into sexier outfit with deep V-line leather vest (I'm sure there's still a tank top underneath - no way he's risking flashing his happy trail on national TV, right?) and sparkling blazer. About performance itself – honestly, I liked the male duo version more, perhaps because of far better sound there. Previous stages were clearer for sure, but guess that's the usual risk of live-air concerts. Or maybe adding a female vocal (and rather high-pitched at that) to it was too much already? Anyway, very sparkling ending to the night. That makes it 11 (!) song for this entry, I think it's more than enough^^

Jiangsu TV NYE gala photoshoot – quite underwhelming, he said because of livestream they didn't have enough time. Car window pic was nice tho.

Tired already?))) I know, I know, but let's count our – well, his – chickens first, and then I'll let you go, I swear! But only till next crazy Friday because man's January schedule is NUTS So I've been doing this... “little” project of mine since first week of 2024 (actual anniversary is in 2 weeks, I'll try to think of something special to celebrate it), and now things finally came a full circle! Overall in the year that passed poster hardworking man Liu Yuning managed to:

- release 24 drama OSTs, 2 movie OSTs, 1 mobile game OST, 1 environmental program ad song and 7 variety show original songs (6 for MELODY JOURNEY and theme song for THE TRUTH S2).

- star in 4 dramas – twice as supporting lead, 1 time as main male lead and 1 time as cameo.

- film 2 dramas, both as ML, plus dub a character in anime (Season2 of LBFAD).

- record 6 variety shows in total.

- fulfill his old dream of performing on biggest TV event in China – Spring Gala (Lunar New Year) concert.

- collect more awards as both singer and actor than I could count, notably: Weibo Livestream King for 3rd consecutive year, his first ever trophy as drama ML “Best Performance Actor” from iQiyi Scream Night, his YOLO movie soundtrack getting “Most Loved OST” and into Top100 songs of 2024 list (certified by China Music Group), few “All-Rounded Artist Of The Year” from different sources, plus being nominated (without winning) as “Best Actor” for actually very prestigious Golden Lotus Award of Macau International TV Festival (latter was just held on 31th, so there's little coverage of results in English yet, I only know for sure he didn't get it).

- trended on hot searches during NYE again – thankfully, this time no tears involved, cnetz were just super impressed with his audacity to livestream from gala concert no less)))

- turned yours truly into unpaid personal biographer of himself – Ning-ge, I'm 100% open for contract negotiations here, call me anytime! 💋

P.S. Just had the worst jumpscare with my laptop suddenly deciding to log me out of my account into basic guest one WITHOUT any of my docs and programs saved, wtf! I didn't work for 3 nights on it for this!

I loved loved loved this Friday with Gikata!
"... turned yours truly into unpaid personal biographer of himself – Ning-ge, I'm 100% open for contract negotiations here, call me anytime! 💋". TOTALLY you deserve an award for creative journalism.

What an amazing week. Holy smokes. The "Toast the Wine" performance was exceptionally cool.

A couple observations: the size of the audiences in so many of these clips you've shared over the year, just astounding. Takes real confidence to perform in front of a crowd that size. Plus it is so tricky when everything is live (including unstable microphones)! And, I kinda thought Lars Huang had perfect pitch. So, even a great, classically trained and talented vocalist can stray.

What a week. My goodness, thank you!

2

@cliosservant1846 you're welcome!

Too bad that my chances to even get personally scolded for all my such provocations are minimal... Doesn't mean I'll stop trying^^

The hologram box (?) thing they did for "Toast the wine" stage is apparently a brand new technology, Yuning tested it on network's behalf. And what a great result!

I think Lars (or Huangzi how they lovingly call him) indeed is classically trained (opera?) singer, I recall reading something about it in comments, forgot details tho. Him and Yuning sound amazing together, I hope they'll collab more in the future. Just pls no sky high soprano ladies next time - she was good, but didn't blend in at all

Oh, few of these were 360 degrees/4 sides arenas (as opposed to standard 3-sides ones), which Yuning notably is not very familiar with. I think his first one like that was earlier this year on Zhang Bichen's concert he guest-crashed and later he was all "that's too overwhelming, I didn't know where/how to stand without impolitely turning my back to audience". Now poor thing has already learned to twirl like a music box figurine while at it - good thing he's not prone to dizziness)))

Get ready - when I saw his January (incomplete!) schedule I was like "dude, OK, you are superhuman, but what about ME?!". And then he'll go touring, omg...

3

Oh Lordy, these comments are fun, no?

Lars Huang and LYN's voices do complement each other so their duets are kinda unforgettable. One, classically trained; the other, streetwise and both super successful. So interesting!

Those 4-sided arenas are scary. I've seen plays "in the round" as they call it, but never productions with such a huge audience. No wonder performers get stage fright.

And the "hologram" technology was breathtaking. Young people are so smart!

2

@cliosservant1846 Yuning and Huangzi also bonded a lot on MELODY, being the mischievous duo, so their perfectly smooth collaboration must be the result of crazy great minds thinking alike)))

Maybe that's just me, but these arenas seem to be getting bigger every year? I remember all Yuning's stages at the end of 2023 and they were already very grand, but this time it really felt borderline stadium-like - in all directions! E.g. CCTV one had this MASSIVE UFO-like construction super high in the sky with fireworks, lights and maybe half of the cameras attached to flying around drones, kinda making it a free show for entirety of already giant Macau... Yuning gushed so much to fans during rehearsal how cool and sci-fi it looked^^ Few years more and they'll slap those cameras onto satellites, I swear...

Got it. All this does is make me miss the great production of Melody Journey even more. :(

1

@cliosservant1846 same. Just watched Yuning's entire episode on HIT SONG last night subbed and while there are some similarities in concept (bunch of famous singers collaborating with less known singers-songwriters to create - or remix already existing song into - potential charts hit), the execution was just not it. On the bright side, while there was no official confirmation yet, with all this attention MELODY cast and songs have been getting from its mother network JiangsuTV lately, I think it's safe to say that S2 is happening. Probably later this year tho - they might want to get more new composers first...

0

There must be a billion listens on YouTube, idk if that's profitable for the original production but it sure raises the profile.

1

@cliosservant1846 probably less profitable than local sites, but any exposure is still exposure indeed. All MELODY tracks are also on Spotify, production clearly not gatekeeping them in the slightest.

0

Thank you Gikata. Ning-ge sure keeps you on your toes working hard to update his doings-of-the-week. It sure takes me a whole week to go through all of the wonderful links you kindly share. Awesome start to a new year. Now I'm excited for the one year anniversary. 🫰🏻

No worries. You are a lot of fun. See ... we are still hanging out with you after a year and hopefully year after year. 👍🏻✊🏻🤞🏻 You and your boy do throw the best parties after all. When there is singing, and dancing, lego robots and princess chairs, shiny hair accessories and silver wigs what's not to love. 😊❤

1

@seeker awww, thank you! Wouldn't make big promises about lasting more years at it, but from my side I'll do my best to keep the show going on - doubt we need to worry about his input here... Stay tuned for next week - it's been barely a day since latest entry, but the spice in my real-time draft is already overflowing!

A notification I received of a reply to a comment by @ceciliedk on Marry My Husband led me back to last year thread on the white truck of doom trope, with very funny contributions from @elinor and @leetennant and got me thinking about how last year was a very bad year for white trucks in terms of making a productive narrative impact (although of course a white truck accident is one of several car accidents central to the misadventure romance, When the Phone Rings, I'm not sure it will be coherently explained by tomorrow.)

Then, I started thinking about other tropes, and the weird choice of “loser in love” as trope of the year in the DB editors/commentators year in review. (I know Lovely Runner had a charismatic 2ML who was a loser in love, but I saw a lot of the years romances, and I can’t think of anyone else as a stand out. Maybe the guy in Frankly Speaking? Or Love Next Door? But they were definitely not worthy of trope of the year!)

Anyway, I am not hear to rehash last year’s review, but rather look forward to the new. What will be the trope we will see most repeated? So far, with shows that started last year and are completing this year, some version of “heroine in disguise” is by far the leader, with When the Phone Rings, Who is She, Tale of Lady OK and Check In Hanyang.

But looking at the summary of other shows coming up, that doesn’t seem to be the prevailing theme there, and maybe that should be considered more of a 24-25 “transition trope” then one we can look forward to in the upcoming year.

So following a New Years trope, any trope predictions for the upcoming year?

All the Left State Ministers will secretly be women as will all the tsundere MLs. In fact, taking a page from Jeongnyeon, no men will actually be cast in any drama after July.

LJG must be still touring all over Asia with concert-fanmeets, perhaps many other do that too. Saddens me greatly, tbh - I get that industry is currently in a bad place and he's not among most profitable A-listers/Netflix faves, but if even actor of his caliber cannot get offers good enough for him to return to dramaland asap, what does the future hold for us viewers at all?

4

@gikata, good point about Lee Joon-gi another favorite missing in action. ARTHDAL CHRONICLES 2 (2023) (which I did not watch) was his last drama and I see no upcoming dramas listed on the usual sites.

1

@marcusnyc20 I haven't heard anything about him signing up for or even seriously considering new drama yet((( It's been ages...

Everybody bodyswapping, having to find out the rules for "when", with pets of different kinds, and some of these pets just has to be those of Taylor Swift, who, having ended her Eras tour, now would have her debut in a K-drama, but only her hands, feet and speaking voice, like the grown-ups in peanuts or the stereotyped Mammy in some old Looney Toons.

Not a humble eunuch, close to the king, but the Left State Minister! I'd watch that!
I thought about the power fights they'd have and think that maybe, in Queen of Tears, it was originally (as one secretary suggested) planned as a Sageuk, with Kim Soo Hyun as the Left State Minister, and Ms. Baek as Her Majesty, The Ruler. Grrr!

Happy New Year @hacja! I hope we cross paths this year. I will start of with:
1. Noble Idiocy.
2. Lying at the drop of a hat. Similar to NI above but different.
3. Not a trope per se but super annoying: sleeping with the lights on.

All of Korean Dramaland is afraid of the dark because then can we see them sleeping alone with all their clothes on, so #3 actually makes sense.

Sleeping with the lights on annoy me much less after a few episodes that were way too dark. Lighting is better than realism.

I do think Loser in love was 2024's trope. As in "it happened enough last year and I hope it doesn't repeat this year". I hope we get MLs with a story and identity on their own this year, instead of "being in love for decades" being their whole thing. And I hope this year they learn that being obsessed with the past isn't romantic at all.

For predictions... I don't read synopsis (to avoid spoilers), so I can't predict anything that'll happen this year. However, I can talk for hours about what I would like to see in the land (aka. time to be delulu):

—Married/already in a relationship couples. (I'm waiting for something like Flower of Evil!! Or maybe like LTNS)
—Body switch. (I feel like a version of Mr Queen where we also see the princess live her best life in the modern world would've been awesome).
—Hilarious time travel (I miss unhinged stuff like Faith. And I guess I just miss fantasy dramas in general)
—Secondary couple that stole the show (why have annoying second leads when you can just have an awesome duo like in High Society)
—A love square that isn't a real love square (let's just have a hilarious misunderstanding like in Ho Gu's Love)
—Bestie leads who support each other in love (I was expecting a cool "I pretend to date my friend so we both can date whoever we want aka. My bestie is my wingperson and protector" from Wedding Impossible, but instead we got some weird and offensive stuff.
So maybe more like the first two episodes of Love in the Big City? Or She Was Pretty but without ruining the friendship for a total jerk).
—Let's both be extra (chaotic leads like in W or WFKBJ, where are you???)
—Emsemble cast that is indeed an ensemble (Not a Virtuous Business type of shows).

Thanks @ceciliedk for the shout out. How is it that I totally forgot that bath scene from SBS’s WOK OF LOVE (2018) (Viki US)? Angels indeed. Imagine being the makeup/tattoo designer on WOL. NEXT!!!

Memory lane. Years ago I wrote a defense for a TOD (under the theory that everyone/thing is entitled to a defense). I think it was for JTBC’s BEAUTIFUL WORLD (2019) but I am not 100% sure now. For some reason my memory tells me Nam Da-reum’s high school character was hit by a truck (of non-doom) and severely incapacitated.

I thought that there would be a recap for Squid Game 2 and I've been waiting to comment there but I'm impatient haha

When I watched Squid Game 2, I didn't notice any of the intricate storytelling or hints shown. I just knew I didn't feel anything in particular about the show or the characters. I never notice those things but that's why I'm grateful to the folks who *do* like the show and watched & rewatched it to pick up on those things.

Like I knew the front man was manipulating Gi Hun but I didn't realize *how* he was doing it such as delaying the 6 legs race to psych the group out & scare them or making sure his team was last in case he needed to have witnesses killed. He may not have even participated in Mingle.

I knew they had a conversation referring to the matrix but I didn't put together that the conversation laid the groundwork for the front man's whole mission in the game: to show the futility and failure of Gi Hun's grand plans of "needlessly" playing hero.

Like I've said before, I never notice the social commentary part until it's spelled out for me haha.I just watched a recap of S1 of Squid Game and was reminded that choosing whether to leave or stay in both seasons (after the first game) came down to a single vote.

A single vote after witnessing carnage around you. I thought the players in S2 were worse but I guess that's not necessarily the case. (I don't remember who made that deciding vote; it was either the old man or Gi Hun)

I haven't seen why people dislike the new season or why it has mixed reviews. After watching videos about the themes and clues within the show, it seems on brand with the social commentary.

For me personally, I just don't feel emotionally attached to anyone but that doesn't mean I don't think some characters are sympathetic or that wouldn't suck if they die.

I'm just too cynical for self righteous Gihun haha. Even though the recruiter and the front man view the players as trash and horses, their perspective is constantly confirmed when people choose selfish, stupid options such as a lottery ticket over food or leaving a death game.

Oh, as I'm writing this I'm reminded of that scene in The Dark Knight when The Joker was trying to make other people complicit in something just to prove people suck or something and Batman was like "no, they're better than that; they'll do the right thing" and the people did do the right thing.
I think that's what Gihun was going for; that common sense, empathy, and compassion would win out.

I don't even know where S3 can go from here because it feels like no matter what, it will be unsatisfying. If Gi Hun somehow wins the moral victory, it doesn't feel true; it just feels like the "good guys win/yay faith in humanity" and if the front man wins, "the bad guy wins/the status quo never changes".

The thing I'm curious about in S3 is again the games. I thought maybe the pictures on the walls were new games but...

NOTES FROM 9TAILEDVIXEN'S 2024/2025 CROSSOVER WEEK:

Happy new year, Beanies!

(A) LIFE NOTES

Aerial Yoga classes have started again and I am picking up from where I left off quite well. I was a bit worried that my flexibility would backslide but so far, so good. Onwards!

Work doesn't resume til 5 January for me so I've about 1 more day to relax before hurling myself back into the fray. And this coming year is going to be stressful and busy AF because the Orange Hitler and his Menagerie of Horrors will be coming back into power. Sigh...

(B) THIS WEEK IN KOREAN WOMEN'S NEWS:

1. South Korean Women’s Resistance at the Heart of Yoon Suk-yeol’s Impeachment

In the wake of Yoon Suk-yeol’s failed self-coup on December 3, South Korean citizens took to the streets to protect the country’s democracy, staging a massive protest led by women in their 20s and 30s. The participation of young female K-Pop fans in particular has drawn attention to women’s role in the peaceful protests, while images of Democratic Party spokeswoman Ahn Gwi-Ryeong defiantly grabbing a soldier’s rifle inspired worldwide admiration.

Women have historically been at the forefront of resistance and activism, from women-led labor organizing in the 1970s under the Park Chung-hee dictatorship, to the 2016 protests against his daughter, former President Park Geun-hye. Candlelight movements – a repeated form of peaceful protest in South Korea – originated in vigils held in memory of two middle school girls accidentally killed by a U.S. military vehicle in 2002, and gained prominence during the protests against U.S. beef import (largely led by teenage girls) in 2008 and again during the protests leading up to the impeachment of Park in 2016.

Yet women are also persistently sidelined in Korean politics, all while bearing the brunt of the country’s socio-economic woes.

Billboard Korea's CEO Yuna Kim spoke with Billboard Japan for its Women in Music interview series featuring trailblazing female players in the country's music industry. Billboard Japan launched its WIM initiative in 2022 in the same spirit as the established example of Billboard's event that began in 2007, honoring artists, producers and executives who have made significant contributions to the music industry and empowered women through their work, the highest accolade being Woman of the Year.

Kim said: "There is harassment in South Korea as well. Many men don't want to get involved in such issues, so it doesn't get covered in the news, especially in the older media. Happy new year!

This week is the first week where my knee seems to finally be back to normal after last August's twisted-and-pulled ligament incident). I'm continuing to wear a knee brace for the foreseeable future but for now I'm just glad it's almost healed up.

Also - today is the first time I did a hip knot and IT DID NOT HURT AT ALL! No pain = more motivation to practice moves again and again.

I'm surprised there isn't a class near you. I would have thought it's not that uncommon these days (many Yoga centres offer them as part of their class schedule).

Whoops, I was planning to post the Bean Count analysis results at the beginning of this Open Thread, but I just realized I got my dates wrong. Whelp, for whoever is still lurking here, here's the results! If it seems like they aren't very visible here, I'll post it again next week. 😅

For anyone that missed it, @Claire09 and I kept a tally of the 2024 Bean Count, and the not-so-official polls closed on New Years Day. The analysis has all been completed now, and you can see that information on the spreadsheet. You can easily navigate and sort by different heading by clicking the hyperlinked headings in underlined white text and a dark green background. That said, I wanted to consolidate some of that information here and start some of the narrativizing process that makes this Bean Count so fun. I’m excited to hear your guys’ thoughts and observations as well!

First, though, here was the overall bean count:

Overall Most Beans (from all lists):
1. Lovely Runner (258)
2. Like Flowers in Sand (137)
3. The Atypical Family (117)
4. No Gain No Love (102) -- tie
4. Queen of Tears (102) -- tie
6. Flex x Cop (86.5)
7. Mr. Plankton (77)
8. Knight Flower (76.5)
9. My Sweet Mobster (64.5)
10. Family by Choice (63)

Interestingly, some of those dramas -- in particular Mr. Plankton, My Sweet Mobster, Flex X Cop, and No Gain No Love -- performed much lower on the DB Staff’s list. Mr. Plankton didn’t receive a single bean, and the other three earned 4 beans or less. Just goes to show the importance of sample size (and also an interesting look at the sometimes divergent preferences of the staff and Beanies on the site)!

See my comments below for more lists and observations (and/or make your own observations from looking at the spreadsheet). :)

Drama Superlatives

All of the following stats come from full-lists only, meaning the analysis only takes into account lists that includes all watched dramas, regardless of if they were given a bean. This included almost 90 completed lists -- more full lists than we’ve had in any previous year that I’ve analyzed (though that project is still in progress). The categories below consider different criteria to try to superlatize some of our drama opinions. You can find more information about what these lists consider and how they’re calculated on the 3rd tab of the spreadsheet. :)

Most Popular Dramas: Dramas that were most frequently watched and enjoyed
1. Lovely Runner
2. Like Flowers in the Sand
3. The Atypical Family

2. Good Partner (tie)
2. Jeongyeon -- The Star is Born (tie)

3. Good Partner (tie)
3. Jeongyeon -- The Star is Born (tie)

I wasn't expecting Knight Flower to be a polarizing drama! that's interesting. Maybe it's because I didn't watch it live, but I don't recall any negative comments about it.

BTW, is there a way to tell "neutral" and "disappointing" shows apart?
I didn't give TSOPark's Marriage a bean, but I wasn't particularly disappointed by it. It was more of a neutral show for me. However, if it wasn't because I didn't feel like wasting my beans, there were other shows I would have given a negative bean because of how disappointing they were.

Again, thank you very much for your work! 💚

re KNIGHT FLOWER and ‘Most Polarizing’. That is a head scratcher for me.
In general (here) sageuks as a genre might be considered polarizing as in the history portrayed, how women in particular are represented etc. I think folks who find sageuks distasteful don’t watch them or quickly drop them (KBS’s DARE TO LOVE ME last year is an example).

5

Required fields are marked *

Knight Flower: I was somewhat surprised as well, though I didn't watch this drama. That said, "polarizing" looks for how many times a drama went unbeaned (i.e., watched but not given any beans) vs. the number of times it was given someone's else's bean (i.e., 2+ beans). It prioritizes dramas that have very little middle ground (i.e., being given just its bean back), instead highlighting the dramas that compelled equally strong reactions on either side. Knight Flower had 17 unbeaned watches, 18 2+ bean watches, and only 8 1-bean watches -- a pretty extreme discrepancy compared to most other dramas. That's how it ranked so high. :)

On your comment from "neutral" vs. "disappointing" -- no, I can't reflect that in the analysis because the only information we have is that it wasn't given a bean. What the analysis really highlights is which dramas were deemed lacking compared to others, since the Bean Count is all about comparison. By receiving a bean by watching Drama A and then allocating that bean to Drama B, we are saying that Drama B was more deserving of thieving Drama A's bean than Drama A was of keeping it. For some, that may be an easy decision; for others, that may have been by the skin of its teeth. I can only know the ultimate decision, though, so that's what we analyze. The data reflects back the decision making process as Beanies use it. It's definitely an imperfect system, though! I'm constantly wishing there was a way for me to account for dropped dramas, since those are probably the most disliked, but our bean count system doesn't allow dropped beans to be counted. Maybe I'll put that forward as an optional inclusion next year, and if enough people list their dropped dramas, I'll try to make something of it. :)

Ohhhh. Thanks for the detailed explanation! I understand better the analysis now.

And I think you're right about the dropped shows. It would be interesting to see the info from the "keep your bean" thread. I don't remember which were the dramas most people dropped, but I think it would be interesting to compare those with the shows that got their beans taken away from them to give it to others. I wonder if they're the same show or not.

2

I agree! There were plenty of dramas that I didn’t give beans to that I enjoyed just fine, but I had to take beans from somewhere to give them to my favorites 🤷‍♀️. I just didn’t watch that many total duds this year hahaha!

4
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Exactly.
There aren't even enough beans to give to my faves, so it gets harder to give one to the other shows I enjoyed "just fine".

I think it would be cool to point out which dramas we feel neutral about and which ones were real disappointments.

4

Other Observations/Fun Facts
1. We received lists from 110 different k drama watchers for a grand total of 2,452 dramas watched, meaning each viewer averaged watching about 22 dramas. Last year, there were 113 watchers with a total of 1,852 dramas. That means that, on average, viewers who submitted lists watched about 6 more dramas this year than last year.

2. Lovely Runner was definitely the biggest winner of the year. Some of its accomplishments: a) It received the most beans total (258 from all lists, 189 from complete lists -- earning over 10% of all the beans allocated this year) b) it received beans from the most individual people (65 from all, 50 from complete), c) it was watched by nearly 75% of all full-list Beanies, d) it was awarded more 2+ beans more than any other drama (39 times), e) it was ranked most popular (#1), and f) it ranked in the top 5 of most loved dramas (#4).

3. The four most watched dramas (Lovely Runner, No Gain No Love, Queen of Tears, and My Sweet Mobster) all ranked in the Top 10 for popularity. This is very different from last year, when the four most watched dramas (Crash Course in Romance, See You in My 19th Life, My Lovely Liar, and Destined With You) only ranked in the Top 10 for “Biggest Bummers.”

4. Connection was given a bean by 95% of its viewers (19/20 viewers). That’s the highest success rate of any drama watched more than 5 times. Black Out came close with a 87% bean rate (13/15 viewers).

5. Of the 106 dramas counted in this tally, only one was watched by no Beanies: 7 Escape -- Resurrection. There were also 17 dramas that were watched by one or more Beanie but were never given any beans.

6. While I don’t have the data/bandwidth for it now, it would be interesting to do a recency analysis to see if the airdate of a drama impacts its bean count performance. Anecdotally, for dramas that weren’t very popular regardless, it seemed like dramas that aired within the last two months were more likely to be given even token beans while dramas earlier in the year were more likely to be harvested.

The dropped dramas list would be an excellent addition. Especially if people added reason like I had too many live dramas on the go at once, it was boring, it was not what I expected, I was not in the right mood when it aired but will watch it another time etc.

The one difficulty there would be standardizing what it means to "drop" a drama. It means a very different thing if a person watches half an episode and doesn't continue vs. if they drop the show halfway through. Personally, I use a quarter of the drama (i.e., 4 episodes for a 16-episode drama, 3 for 12, etc.) as my standard for if I just attempted the drama or if I actually dropped it. If I'm still in the first quarter, I don't feel like I can really weigh in on the overall quality of the drama. If it's after that, it feels like I gave it a fair shot.

I agree and maybe if we have that discussion at the time when suggesting including the drop option beanies can jump in with their views. I dropped dramas I wanted to watch within the first episode or two because it wasn’t what I expected usually too scary for me! So that’s why I thought of that category but I agree the ¼ of the series gives us a chance to understand where the drama is going as a lot of beanies have pointed out the first couple of episodes can sometimes feel like they are from another drama.

So I have been away from db for what feels like an eternity (notice my dp is from Run On) because I've been doing drama reactions/reviews on Patreon and youtube. The downside to that though is I can only record on the weekends so I only watched a handful of dramas in the past years. I now realized that that lifestyle sucks and I want to watch more dramas. Here's to more beans for year end! 🙌
