[Drama Chat] One trope you want to see more of in 2025

What’s one trope you want more of this year? Come on, you know you’re not escaping them, so you might as well pick a favorite and root for it.

Outside of some genre stalwarts like Truck of Doom and Birth Secret, these tropes often ebb and flow in popularity. In 2024 we saw a lot of Losers in Love, while Surprise Neighborhood Serial Killer finally slid out of first place.

Is there a trope you want dramaland to play with some more? Or some trend you see emerging for the year? *pings drama radar* Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

What’s one trope you want to see more of in 2025?

The #406 phone from When The Phone Rings. If it is not a trope 😅 make it one pali. 😱 The drama was sizzling till the time the phone was in the front and center leading the show.🔥

Well, if the rumours of Signal 2 “coming soon” have any merit, we might get a phone/phone-adjacent main character in a drama soon.

I would like to see a phone trope in which characters use call blocking to prevent creepy exes, threatening estranged parents, and other unwelcome callers from getting through. I don’t recall ever having seen it in a drama.

Is a Nice Tsundere possible beanies?

While rewatching You're Beautiful I realized that it is possible.
Tae Kyung was a tsundere but he was also so patient and considerate (more than I ever could) with Mi Nam.
She was a total disaster, so if he got angry at her it was with a reason (she was high-key dangerous). I just felt bad for him tbh.
But he was never a total jerk like other guys (I don't want a ML like the one from Secret Garden ever again).

The kid from Under the Gun (2024) was also a harmless tsundere. I liked him.

To me, that means just a bit reserved or taciturn. It is very attractive. I know of a lot of mls like that, and I agree, it's one ofy favorite ml types.

If I can only pick one, it might honestly be Contract Relationships. It doesn't get much tropier, but it sets the stage (or results from) so many other tropes I love, and there are few things that kdrama as hard for me.

I was also thinking back to @hopefulromantic 's micro-trope post a few months ago, and there are plenty of micro-tropes I'd love to see more of: brushing hands, focusing on wedding rings, having an honest conversation because one person thinks it's a dream, taking care of each other while sick, and all the little self-referential meta moments! Also (and I mentioned in this week's WWW), I realized I really love when two characters are in a fake relationship, they get asked something personal (like how they met), and one gives the real answer, totally taking the other by surprise! I just saw it in No Gain No Love, but I think the greatest example is in Search WWW. Get's me every time!

Tropes I started thinking of recently: rain kisses & "there's only one room/ bed". Oldest tropes in the book and Korea doesn't use them nearly enough (if they ever use them to begin with).

Also: trope reversals! A lot of the big tropes (especially in romances) are starting to tire me because of how one-sided they are. It's always the same thing. Switch it up already!

A trope I love and it's not often used: the ML or the FL starts the story liking/in love with a third person, but for different circumstances, he/she ends up falling in love with someone else: the other main lead (and the viewers know from the start they will be the OTP).

This year I watched That Fool (2009) and 9 end 2 outs (2007). I loved both shows.
And also I'm sorry I love you (2004). I didn't like it but the trope was there.

I also like when the FL or the ML don't like the other main lead at all, but they end up in love. But I don't mean enemies to lovers. It's more like indifference or "I never paid attention to him" or "he is quite annoying".

Maybe this trope was more common in old k-dramas but I wish it came back.

Required fields are marked *

I would also like to see this trope make a comeback, but with SLs who aren't total trash (even if they're a little toxic). Like Coffee Prince, for ex.

I think the closest we got to this last year was with Tell Me That You Love Me. But it wasn't really that trope.

4

I think in "When the Phone rings that girl who ended up with orabeoni, she was actually the SLF?
Otherwise, it would be FL's sister, who officially was married to ... well, that whole thing. But there was never anything hotter than a handshake between her and ML.

1

I'm not sure if I asked this before, my memory's like a sieve, but what didn't you like about "I'm Sorry I Love You?"

I watched and liked the Japanese version, so I've always been planning to watch the OG version.

1
1

Required fields are marked *

I think I didn't like the characters, they were very exaggerated. And the FL... I have never seen a character as bland and poorly written as her. Several characters often said they wanted to die and for very silly reasons (specially the SML). At the end it was almost comical.
The show was very dramatic but I couldn't connect with it, so I never felt sad for what was happening.
The OST was good, though.

2

I think this was a trope used often in the past.

Coffee Prince, Innocent Man, Falling for Innocence, My Princess, Personal Taste, Smile You, My Girl or Kim Sam Soon (or both, I don't remember tbh), Big, Good Doctor, Flower Boy Next Door, etc. And more recently, Do You Like Bramhs.

It was when the SFLs would have the MLs in the palm of their hands but for some reason wouldn't want to date them, just use them. Or the SMLs would be total jerks cheating on the FLs or something.

Can't believe I forgot about this one. It's like my favorite trope. But true slowburns are a very rare thing in KDramas I think. I can only think of Love Alarm (very debatable, and only from the FL's perspective) as an example. Summer Strike maybe? But even there they were shooting hearts very quickly, so this one's also debatable. Or Good Doctor?

Can't think of any other examples honestly, so that probably says enough. But yeah, we really do need some true slowburns.

I've seen numerous dramas that you and others mentioned, but I don't really consider most of these slowburns. The romances mentioned feel developed in a natural way, at a normal pace, but not necessarily in a slow burn way, and for me at least, there's a difference.

For me, a true slow burn is when it actually takes a long time. It's slow, almost unbearably so. I think a good example is when there's a certain tension, and you know there's something there, and it drives you crazy as you wonder if and when the show will actually get to the point. I thought of some examples after my earlier post: Reply 1988 and Hospital Playlist.

As others mentioned, they are usually seen in melos or slice of life shows. Or when there's a big obstacle, like an actual real love triangle where everybody actually stands a chance (and not one of those fake ones like in 99% of dramas).

Speaking of potential slowburns that will certainly have audiences talking one way or the other... Taxi Driver 3 has the chance to do the funniest thing...

3

Required fields are marked *

I think slow burns are usually seen in the melo or slice of life department.
For ex, You Are My Spring, My Liberation Notes, 25-21, Love Affairs in the Afternoon, etc.

In romcoms I think it happens when we also get the trope Isa mentioned (the leads liking someone else at the beginning). Like in Flower Boy Next Door. Or when they're exes (like in Cunning Single Lady).

1

Required fields are marked *

I liked several slowburn romances (Live up to your name, Flower Boy Next Door, Bossam, Jugglers, That Fool, My Unfamiliar family, The Best Hit, Fated to love you, My secret Terrius, Something about 1%, Fake It till you make it (China) Meet Yourself (China...).

I usually enjoy this trope more than "instant love" or "I have loved you all my life".

clever maids moonlighting as assistant ninjas

supernatural cohabitation ALWAYS works for me
people having queer friends bc it is normal
a character identifying nonbinary
a female character who doesnt own a lot of make up (I dunno if thats possible in Korea? It seems even the poorest girl has a whole salon at home)

one thing I have long been disturbed by is that big dogs, german chepards, belgians - in dramas, almost always mean and try to attack. small dogs, lapdogs - cute puppies WHEN THEY ARE LITERALLY THE MEANEST. just admit that a spitz can gnarl off your toe. So I want a big mean looking dog being the true lovebabo that they are. and a small dog being the petty little shit

'a couple where neither really knows how to cook just one is sligtly less terrible (realistic)' That is really an anti-trope. As you said, it's realistic, rather than the fantastic wish-fufillment world of tropes and K-dramas.
The ML being a wonderful cook and doing all the work of cooking is what women who are required to work/care/cook all day dream of.

Anyone who truly knows dogs knows what you mean about the big ones. Usually, the biggest danger is that they will bowl you over while they try to lick you to death.

But there are some exceptionally nice breeds among small dogs that are not just toys of a larger breed (or terriers) but were long ago bred as companion dogs. A great example is the Shih Tzu - a breed at least 1500 years old- which were bred to be companions for the emperor. They are the exact opposite of mean.

good to know "nice small doggies" at least exists - I think this breed is not common here. I have had 4 occasions a small dog jumped in my face for the sole reason that I was eating or I checked the plan at a tram (owners russian both time, yelled at me instead of apologising and accused me of scaring their dog).
meanwhile, big dogs thinking they be so smol and try to sit on my lap (90kg!) and then be like "play ball with me" like I cant play when im literally flat. they are sometimes so delulu

Maybe not a trope? But I'd enjoy seeing more great opening credits, especially those that integrate graphic art. Although the show seems to be coming up short, the opening credits of GUARDIANS OF DEFANG are muscular, inventive, visually arresting and fit well with the opening theme. To me, these opening credits are works of art and especially creative.

O/T. One of the issues for me for cdrama opening credits is that oftentimes they are loaded with little sp0ilers which I try to avoid. Sometimes the closing credits do the same. So generally my rule is to skip over the opening credits until the last episode and then enjoy the ost, same for the closing credits (plus you cut several minutes from an episode’s running time. In a 30-40 episode drama those minutes add up.

But not like in Squid game. It should be
1) He had done something really bad and actually deserved to die thousand painful deaths (I am against capital punishment, but not always in stories. That ex in Marry my Husband, e.g. ... he deserved his bad luck so much).
2) He said it and died by accident (ToD, Falling Piano, Whatevs) and also, he was a bit annoying.
3) THe one he says it to is just an over-sincere person who believes what people say, more so if they remember to say "please". An alien, an android, or Lee Min-ki.

I really really want to see more of a “forbidden/impossible” love story. But not like incest-forbidden-type of story. More like:

- large age differences
- alien/human
- different cultures/races
- Romeo-and-Juliet
- extreme economic/class difference
- maybe even some mythical or supernatural barriers

I love seeing how the main leads grapple with these differences and endure all for the sake of being with each other. Because what’s more love than the courage to let go of the bit of yourself to understand better your loved one?

5

Required fields are marked *

I'd have to add to that 'impossible love' trope the situation where one of the leads has experienced a huge unjustifiable loss and takes revenge on the wrong person----our female lead, who he almost destroys; but then slowly realizes his mistake and must earn redemption for his cruelty, not from her, but from himself after he realizes he's hurt her more than he was ever hurt. I like starting out with an ML who's a diamond sunk into the mud and must go through hell to shine. The best example for me of this was the classic from 2013: "Secret Love" (on viki) with ML Hwang Jung Eun, whose refusal to give into hate, no matter what he did to her, made a great heroine but a hard watch. Bae Soo-Bin plays the SL who begins as a man proud of his shiny principles then slides into dirty means to protect himself. Definitely a slow burn romance, but an emotional thriller. It's a favourite I keep on my rewatch list and is still rated high after 12 years.

After watching Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born

Please bring musicals back as a genre . Singing could be a trope. 😉Korea has such much talent , put it to good use. OSTs are one thing , the actors singing their scene is better. 😍

More theatre too please .

I’ll mention J drama (for the nth time), Futekisetsu ni mo Hodo ga Aru! /Extremely Inappropriate!(2024) a time travel comedy family show that is also a musical. Highly recommend it if you like any of those tropes.

I want to see more successful romances for the assistants, male and female , that always there for our leads, through thick and thin, through lean hard times in a palace drama or handling the hectic schedules of the pickiest chaebol.

The Assistants are there in historical dramas often as servants or slaves (can be a royalty bff ) and in the skyscraper towers of the chaebols as the Secretary .

Not only in Rom/Coms, but across all genres , Drama writers, please consider 🙏
