Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (November 9, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

solstices

Currently covering: Dongjae the Good or the Bastard, Fiery Priest 2

Eternity: A heartfelt ode to those forgotten through time and those who wish to be remembered beyond it, told through a sincere homage to glam rock and the universe we live in. Shining in its attention to detail, from the evocative lighting to the symbolic set design to the striking costumes to the soul-stirring music (such a variety of genres, and this isn’t even half of it), the production seamlessly weaves in themes of outer space into its tale of humanity. The connection between the 20th-century superstar Bluedot and his present-day fan Kuiper is one that transcends the boundaries of time and space, like a comforting murmur that somewhere out there, there will always be someone watching over you. This musical has me appreciating the Korean theatre custom of multi-casting all over again; all nine actors in the three-character cast have such distinct interpretations that it’s simply a joy to watch any and every one of them. I love them all, but my favorite portrayal belongs to Kim Jun-young, who imbues Bluedot with an aching loneliness and a poignant vulnerability that has me in tears every time.

starrygazer

Currently covering: Family by Choice

Hellbound: There is plenty of gore and violence in Season 2 so I wouldn’t recommend this drama to the faint of heart. Kim Hyun-joo is just as badass in this season as she was in the last. If you liked Season 1 definitely don’t miss out, you won’t regret it.

The Veil: Going into my back catalog again this week I decided on The Veil. I’m not a huge fan of the “memory loss” trope but it feels necessary for this storyline. And personally I think Namgoong Min is a brilliant actor, so I’m already sucked into this spy drama. (The flashes of abs aren’t too bad as an addition either.)

COMPLETED
The Judge from Hell - I like that it didn't try too hard to create some grand, tragic fantasy narrative. The rules remained arbitrary and the open ending is in tune with what we know of Justitia.

The History of Us - I wasn't expecting that ending. Reminded me of Rookie Historian a bit. Wish it had been longer.

Dong-jae… - A different vibe from Stranger. This was more of a comedy wrapped in a thriller. Favourite moments - Dong-jae working at the construction site and calling himself Hwang Si-mok 😂 and (Ex) Attorney Kang coming in clutch at the end.

ONGOING
Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born - The acting was stellar but I rapidly ran out of sympathy for Jeong-nyeon. The character I felt for the most this week was poor Cho-rok.

A Virtuous Business - Nice to see the village ladies being supportive - Butcher Lady is a boss! The leads are cute.

Family by Choice - I'm with Ju-won - waltzing back into her life, after years away, without explanation or apology is ridiculous. The confession was so abrupt.

STARTED
Brewing Love - Unfortunately not very interesting. The scenes with the little bro were probably my favourite. There also seems to be a strange whitewashing filter on the whole thing - maybe trying to make the actors fairer 🤔?

Face Me - Jung-woo's back-story was quite sad but it's a teeny-tiny bit funny that this is the 5th or 6th drama where Lee Min-ki gets hit by a vehicle of doom 😅. Doesn't seem to be doing much new as a procedural but fills the mid-week gap.

WATCHLIST
The Fiery Priest S2 of course! Kim Nam-gil 🥰

C-DRAMAS
Fangs of Fortune (up to Ep. 21) - There is no real plot here. And they retcon things every so often. People die and come back alive. There are no real stakes.

The Story of Pearl Girl (up to Ep. 18) - Almost the opposite with too much plot! The pockets of happiness are always interspersed with murder, kidnapping and torture. Like in today's tragedy - Shrimp 😔.

Love Game in Eastern Fantasy (up to Ep. 19) - This is the easiest to watch and doesn't take itself too seriously. Can't believe Xu Hai Qiao is playing a parent with a tragic love story yet again 😅.

Waiting for Beanies' opinions on Smile Code before I try it.

A VIRTUOUS BUSINESS (Ep 7-8) The Fab Four ladies are slowly growing their inner circle to include more town’s women. Dae-Geun’s story of being his family unsuccessful outcast did not hit home. I also think pairing him with Ju-ri is too forced and strange. Likewise, Do-Hyeon’s physical touching Jeong-Suk was way out of place. It is part of the show’s growing theme that Korean men are mostly introverted, perverted, clueless, socially awkward, inept, man-children and yet, aggressive. Do-Hyeon’s mission to find his parents seems to stall as his feelings grow for Jeong-suk. He never never thought that his parents were not looking for him . . . really?, when the country has a national data base for foreign adoptees looking for their parents? (My theory is that the fires and stolen babies was part of a profitable foreign adoption business.)

This week highlighted the difference between Young-Bok and Geum-Hui’s marriages. Geum-Hui went on one blind date and laid down the law: she would be a modern woman who would not have children. In a conservative era, that was unknown. Young-Bok’s difficult situation is all tied to her husband being an ex-convict. This is why he cannot get work. How they overcome their regrets and troubles will determine their futures.

BREWING LOVE (Ep 1) Too many side characters, too many genres and too many potential conflicting story lines in the first hour. Our spunky, petite FL is a beer company sales rep who is a former special forces soldier who collects payments like a gangster. In the real world, that makes no sense but this is action-fantasy like THE AUDITORS. Our ML is the introverted zen master genius with no social skills which gives me the vibe of BEST CHICKEN but with beer. But then we get a a bunch of overly quirky farm villagers trying their best to be a community theater version of PEGASUS MARKET. Then we learn the ML has a bad relationship with his former soldier father, who does understand his “sensitive son.” But the ML’s empathic ability is shown more supernatural than instinctual. It seems the set up will include a factory (office) crisis, a love triangle with the rich marketing woman who is looking for the “perfect” man, illogical corporate fighting between beverage companies and multiple family melo moments.

ART DECO (YouTube) This is a YT channel where the host explains the back stories of famous paintings by the masters. You would never know what the painter is symbolizing unless you know the context . . . and most of the Renaissance paintings have embedded stories that would rival any modern drama.

I'm also not wild about how the relationship dynamics are playing out in A Virtuous Business and the physical contact feels more uncomfortable than romantic with both Jeong-suk and Ju-Ri.

Live Watches
Judge from Hell: It’s fun to have an antihero once in a while! This one in particular felt pretty cathartic because the drama was really careful to make sure all the men she killed were super horrible. In the end I didn’t love the romance; it worked for me towards the beginning when she was dropping truth bombs that he found comforting, but when they actually got together it fell a little flat and I had trouble imagining them happy together. I still liked the show overall, and it was nice to have something that didn’t stress me out or demand too much from me.

Brewing Love: This one struck me as odd at first but I’ve come around after episode 2. I’m really liking the leads, warming up to the side characters, and excited for a bright, light drama.

Recent Dramas:
Black Out: (10 episodes in) OOPH. I’m glad I didn’t start out trusting anyone so that I’m not heartbroken when everyone turns out to be in on it. That all these village folks could know so much of what happened and still demonize ML to this extent makes my blood boil. And the police chief? Mr. My-son-is-already-dead-so-you-don’t-have-anything-on-me-anymore? I cant remember the last time I’ve wanted to see a character taken down so badly. Truly a fantastic show and I’m bummed I haven’t had as much time for it this week. Onward!

Like in Real Life, this week brought me some drama surprises. I was looking forward to Brewing Love, but... after 5 minutes I closed it and started Face Me instead (originally not really planning to watch at all) and was hooked straight from the start. The show is nicely shot, with speed, and reminds me a bit of Japanese dramas. I enjoy a lot Han Jihyun here... and her little police team... and her exchanges with Dr. Lee Minki (who has a mystery tragic backstory, of course).

Then I checked The Story of the Pearl Girl... and after a couple of episodes I surprisingly switched to Love Game in Eastern Fantasy. It has Esther being Esther 🙂 but she is rather good at it. 😄

Iron Family
This is becoming my favourite show of the week. It manages to mix comedy and touching moments really well. And Kim Junghyun is a joy to watch.

Virtuous Business
-One of my theories was, that Geumhui was Dohyeon's mom. I was clearly wrong.
-Oh, Im Chulsoo, I knew it. I knew you would have more prominent role. But I didn't want you (and Kim Sunyoung) to make me cry. 😪
-Jeongsooki is an earnest worker/student at everything, even at investigating. 😄
But the hug was wrong - not only because Jungsook was a recent victim of an assault, but it was also out of character of Dohyeon.

Family by Choice
I was looking forward to the time jump, but to be honest, I got disappointed this week. I'm not sure what exactly makes me feel so unsatisfied, probably the pacing? We first spent a lot of time on a couple of days saying goodbye... and then bam, 10 years later... with a huge missing knowledge... and with boys behaving like nothing has happened... I don't know, there was like a beat missing... extra shot, lingering moment, flasback or something. Anyway, the storytelling aside, I just want to say... that I'm in love with Dal. 😊

That reason threw me off too at first, but she had a desperate need to ensure that she'd at least have a 'normal' life experience after learning that she could never afford the money needed to save her sight. So the 'hooking' up for me was different than what we get in an American drama when characters are swept away by heated but usually unmotivated & meaningless first attractions. Those frequent and impersonal clichés were one of many reasons I stopped watching US TV and now only keep up with the news channels. 'Iron family' is slightly quirky but lots of fun, so here I am, two days later on Ep. 5 and really enjoying the antagonistic chemistry they have between them and those big bags of money, waiting to be put to good use for someone who finds them. I love Kim Junghyun in this. Yet again he plays a character with a nice dollop of humour, which he does well, yet there's also a deep vein of insecurity under his outward confidence that makes you pull for him. There's also a bit of the shallow 'jaded'-ness he showed in his 'Crash Landing on You' character, and the stumbling well-meaning pretend Dad in 'Welcome to Waikiki, as well as his OTT performance in 'Mr. Queen'. As for Geum Sae Rok, I don't remember her in 'Fiery Priest' or 'Marry Me Now', but this is a great role and she is 'living' it...humour & pathos side by side. The situation she's in with her family, as Mom leans on them all for cash to help her get surgery must be devastating. Especially their reactions. I'm only at the start of this long weekender and will keep binge-watching. It's so nice when you're busy and want to sit down with a drama but don't have to go searching for something new that's worth commiting to. My fave watch for the month.

A very nice defence.
Plus Darim and Lighter Writer actually knew each other.
And with more episodes, more connection is revealed (one of the aspects of a weekender).

1

That is such a crucial point. The first episode set the background - including the desperation of both our FL and also the impact of their situation on the rest of her family as well. People can make such decisions when there is no hope.

1

Is it true that Iron Family will have 36 episodes? Are they 30 min or 1 hour? Just wondering as I want to watch, but will have to sign up for a 7 day free trial on KOCOWA. I'm thinking I better wait and binge this one after it finishes.

(It is still a weekender, thus the pace is different and more episodes are needed to get into all the stories. But you have now the advantage that you can binge watch. 🙂)

1

Sorry to be stupid but could anyone on Dramabeans please define what a weekender is, and how that terms came into use?

2

@cliosservant1846
Those are dramas aired on weekends, usually about 50eps long, with multiple stories. @oldawyer wrote a nice essay about family weekenders on his fanwall if you are interested.

2

His post on weekenders was written up and edited as a "Surviving and Thriving" post too: https://dramabeans.com/2023/06/surviving-and-thriving-weekenders/

3

Got it! Thank you both, and Old Lawyer.

Made it through ep. 9, and using FF. Let's see if I make it through ep. 16!

2

Ep 16 hasn't aired yet 😄
I hope you are having fun!! 🙂

1

For me, usually weekenders are fun to watch for the first 15 episodes and then 10 last ones, the middle being a lot of fillers.

KBS weekenders were famous because they had around 40% ratings. But now, things changed, there are many dramas on the week-end when before they were mainly released during the week and they had some bad ones making them loosing viewers.

1

Thank you for all of this info! I was also wondering what a weekender is....other than just airing on the weekend!. I think I might have to bite the bullet and upgrade to viki plus also. There are several other dramas I would like to watch and I'm tired of waiting for them to downgrade to basic.

I was really looking forward to BREWING LOVE but after the first two episodes- I am not sure what I am watching. The good news: No one is getting drunk. The bad news- there are a lot of attempts at slapstick comedy but often it doesn’t really connect. It seems like the writer and PD are trying to achieve effects similar to a webtoon- and if the show were based upon a webtoon I could understand this- but there would also be more logic in the adaptation to live action as well. Oddly, the best parts of the show are when our ML is interacting with his very much younger brother. Yet the show does have moments when things really do connect. For the time being I am sticking with it.

Five weeks into the new daily MY MERRY MARRIAGE and there are still no marriages in sight. We are a little short on merriment as well although we certainly got a tragic background story for our ML’s mom- and reason to totally despise his grandmother. But the real prize goes to our manipulative 2FL. Why do I continue to watch? Curiosity and nothing more. This is not the very best of Dailies.

In stark contrast stands the Weekender IRON FAMILY. This is what Weekenders are supposed to be like and now that we have come to love so many of our characters the impending danger will be all the more poignant (Note: there are no serial killers). We have now completed the first third of our show with the wedding of our FL’s Oppa to his truly beautiful bride. Our FL’s aunt is now divorced from her cheating husband- who has taken custody of her son (but a surely as rain falls from the sky her child will soon be back with her). This sounds bad (it is) but really it just means that her true love story can now begin as we found out that Bom’s dad is a widower (talk about a perfect setup). But perhaps the nicest scene was the reconciliation of our FL with her Unni. Family relationships are a very big part of what Weekenders are about and they shine in this one.

This week my wife took a break from Chinese Costume dramas to watch all three seasons (on Prime) of the Ukrainian historical drama LOVE IN CHAINS. She is now watching LOVE AND REMEMBRANCE the sequel to THE WINDS OF WAR. There was a time when American TV could create quality shows (and strictly speaking the recent re-make of SHOGUN is actually American).

I also checked out FACE ME. Police procedurals are not generally my cup of tea, but the first two episodes held my interest.

Brewing Love: I liked these two episodes. The empath part was unexpected, but I like it. I think our leads have good chemistry and I am looking forward to the rest of the drama.

Dongjae: I cannot wait until Wan Sung gets his. I also would really like to know who killed Yu Ri and how they will get their comeuppance.

Family by Choice: Ju Won has all my empathy. She was genuinely heartbroken about the Boys leaving and they took it so casually. So because of that, she had to grow up and she did. The boys on the other hand are a little bit in suspended animation of when they were happiest. Also, I am rooting for Dal to have all the good things.

Face Me: This is a paint by numbers police procedural. Nothing special, so I will continue it just for fun.

A Virtuous Business: Ahhh a double checking of a crush as if they are teenagers instead of grown up, how chaste. I really hope our criminal didn’t do anything, I am rooting for this couple.

Jeongnyeon: Sigh, I hope she learns her lesson from this. She earned losing her voice and I hope she actually grows from this.

Gangnam B-side: It is better than the other one so far. The story is coherent and has woven all the pieces well together. I am enjoying this.

Mr. Plankton: I thought this would be lighthearted. I watched the 1st episode and most of the 2nd, it was mostly just sad. Pity

Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born (7-8): I swear, everybody has so much chemistry with each other, I absolutely love it. But it also makes me very curious to see where all our pairings will end up. Anyway, episode 8 was heartbreaking, and Kim Tae-ri was phenomenal. Now that she's hit her lowest point, I guess the only way to go from here is up... right?

Face Me (1-2): I enjoyed episode 1 enough to watch episode 2, even if it wasn't anything great. But surprisingly, I really liked episode 2, and I thought it was a lot better than the first. I got a better understanding of our leads (especially the ML), and I'm pretty curious to see where our main story goes. Also quite liked the episode 2 case, and I thought they did a pretty good job at how they handled that "twist". Also, Lee Yi-kyung is obviously a bad guy here, isn't he? Or maybe I just have trust issues.

The Judge from Hell (Series review) - Mood progression: C+ / C / C- / D+ / D / D-
It’s hard to take the fantasy aspect of the show seriously when the deus ex machina has their own deus ex machina. It was going somewhat well at the start before the romance / serial killer / Satan mess wore me down. Of course, Bael had to be a downer twice in the finale because the writer needed to force in some conflict, and I absolutely hate seeing contrived crap.

Brewing Love (Episode 1-2) - Mood: D+
To be honest, I picked this up because it looked the most interesting out of all the premieres this week. So, I was quite okay (actually not okay) seeing the unnatural closeness of the male leads or the forced bickering of the female leads. But I’ll say that the whole empath pseudoscience (especially the directing) is concerning: it looks and sounds like a romance gimmick.

Dongjae: I'm on the last two episodes of Dongjae. I'm going to miss this weasel. This show was such a delight, I loved that they decided to go a more comedic tone, it fits Dongjae a lot better and it makes the serious moments stand out more & contrasts with his personality.

I really hope we get a second season or at least news on a third Stranger season!

In my opinion, ten episodes is way too short when you want to tell a story as complex as Stranger, it worked for Dongjae/a Spinoff, but it wouldn't work for Stranger. So I hope whatever Stranger-universe content we will be getting in the future, it get's enough episodes to tell it's story.

Jeongnyeon & Doubt: I'm watching up to all the episodes today, I enjoy both a lot.

These three are some of favorites shows I watched this year!

planning to watch: gangnam-b-side. I heard good reviews, I really loved BIBI and Ji Chang Wook's acting in the Worst of Evil, so I will check this one out as soon as I can xD.

anticipating:

- when the one rings. I like the premise and the trailer, so I will check this one out for sure! Yoo Yeon Suk is playing the ML in this, I love that he plays in another thriller. His acting in a bloody lucky day was kinda terrifying, it's kinda weird seeing him in non-thriller roles because of that lol.

- squid game (has anyone seen Park Sung Hoon's hair in the teaser? It looks kinda silly. very different vibe than his usual roles)

school spirits (american, but I just found the teaser for s2 a few days ago. I NEED to know how soon "coming soon" is...)

Judge From Hell: 8.5 Why do so many good shows have to end all at once?

A Virtuous Business: 7.0 Day 7 spent so much time on assorted assaults/criminals/arson/kidnapping/mysteries and so litte on sexy underwear or business development. Day 8 was slightly better, but once you get past the "want to support the ladies and oppose sexism" bit, the show needs to decide what it wants to be.

Jeong-Nyeon: The Star is Born: 7.5 Once the novelty wears off, there's such a thing as too much singing. And I think the antagonist isn't well done.

Dongjae, the Good or the Bastard: 7.0

Brewing Love: 1.5 The over-dramatic (meaning silly) motorcycling 11 minutes into ep 1 was an ominous sign that the writer and/or PD have tastes that are not mine. Out 15 minutes into ep 2, but I was totally bored and should have left sooner. Also, show is eternally cursed for being the evil omen I was trying to watch on election night.

Face Me: 7.0 The backstory was overdone and kdrama-ish even by kdrama standards, but we can hope they'll finish it off soon (??) and focus on current-day.
- My main reason for sticking around is Han Ji-hyun -- she's been too good in other shows to just drop near the start. I'm having some whiplash adjusting to her as a detective after Cheer Up, Spice Up Our Love, etc, and she seems to be a bit to Cheery for a detective on a case.
- Also, I don't have enough other weekday watches :(
- Lee Min-ki seems terribly typecast.
- And I almost wonder if either lead can play any type except what I'm used to seeing them do.

Gangnam B Side: 1.7 Out 17 minutes into ep 1.

Fiery Priest s2: 6.0 Parts seemed targeted more at 7 year-olds than 70-somethings like me. I dropped season 1 early because it seemed too childish, but this time I'll try to hold out long enough to see what so many other people liked so much.

Mr. Plankton: __ Sorry, terminal illness isn't my thing.

Dog Knows Everything: __ Sophie!! Where are you? Come back!

There are so many issues in so many shows that could be solved better and quicker with Judge From Hell crossovers than whatever the actual shows do. The real world could use some too.

And Youtube is suggesting videos about countries that are easy for Americans to move to. Sigh.

While Koreans drown their sorrows in liquor, I'm drowning mine in K-dramas. #IYKYK.

Speaking of which, there was far less drinking in Brewing Love than I thought there'd be. Like many others, I hope it settles down and finds its groove soon. Also like other Beanies, I thought the 10-year no-contact time skip in Family by Choice poorly done. Seoul aint Singapore, San-ha! But I'm hoping we learn more next episodes.

But unlike many others, it seems, I didn't mind the other weekday premiere Face Me. Just your average police-plastic surgeon procedural. LOL. Sure, Min-ki was Min-ki'ing yet again but Han Ji-hyun was adorable, no?

Am I feeling generous? I am. K-dramas were a salve for me this week. Thank you A Virtuous Business, Jeongnyeon, Iron Family and others. But since I can't stand more suffering right now, I will skip Mr Plankton. I may need a dose of The Fiery Priest 2 today. If only the good guys always won...

Making the good guys win:
The victories of big money, shameless lies, egotism and contempt for the lives of others happening right now is based on decades of work.
If you have any idea - or meet someone who has any idea - on how to turn the tide, if not now, then at least for the next generation, then the best thing to do is to walk that road. Until further notice, be aware of local elections and help those that fall victim to Jim Crow laws. However long it takes, being part of the work to turn the compass to point towards peace on earth and goodwill to all again, it will still be worth starting the work now.

2. A VIRTUOUS BUSINESS - It's awesome seeing the drama push back against rape culture. Keep up the great work, Writer-Nim and cast!

COMPLETED:

1. THE JUDGE FROM HELL - This has been a great drama from start to finish despite the plot holes. Park Shin-Hye was AWESOME and the final episode stuck the landing.

2. CINDERELLA AT 2AM - It's pretty good as a lighthearted watch but the ML is a bit of a Red Flag Dude.

Was traveling last month so lots of shows to catch up on.

WATCHING:-

*Iron Family* (3/36) - The last few weekenders have been disappointments, so I have my fingers crossed for this one. It does seem to be following the footsteps of My Father Is Strange and Once Again, so I'm hopeful. The ML is kind of weird till now. He is the only character I'm not liking.

*My Damn Business* (6/7) - Another low budget KBL with high quality content. This office romance is as cute as it's heart-fluttering! The runtime is too short but the show is making every minute count.

*What Comes After Love* (2/6) - Maybe I'm in the mood for a melancholy vibe. The pining of an earnest lover is very well done. I'm curious to see how Hong could just dump someone like him?

COMPLETED:-

*Let Free The Curse of Taekwondo* - It hurt so bad but it healed so good! Director Hwang Da-Seul has done it again - given us the most emotionally fulfilling love story. Her 'To My Star 2' still remains my favorite, but this one is a close second. 9 out of 10 Stars

*No Gain No Love* - Started better than it ended. Loved the sisterhood, but not the girls individually. It was the second couple that kept me watching till the end. 7 out of 10 Stars

*Moving* - Started it months ago and then put it on hold after the first few episodes. Picked it up again coz I really wanted to watch Jo In-Sung. The story got interesting when the narrative moved to the parents' time. A little too violent for my taste, but the relationships kept me engaged. 7.5 out of 10 Stars

I have to agree about the ML in IRON FAMILY. What I am hoping for is a lot of growth in the last two-thirds of the show. Also- what is the deal with his stepfather? We need to know more about how he got to the emotional place he is in.

LITBC is very much on my watchlist. I was waiting for LFTCOT to get over before starting another emotionally taxing show.

I wrote a reply earlier about it being better that you go into LFTCOT without knowing the end. But seeing that you are already getting over LITBC, I think it's better you know. LFTCOT is a very happy ending :) The show makes you earn it though!

Happy Saturday, Beanies!

MERMAID AND SHARK BUSINESS SAGA THE STORY OF PEARL GIRL: I have a confession to make – I wish I loved it more. Make no mistake – show is still entertaining, I enjoy leads tried and tested acting/chemistry and we're getting more romance (not to mention damned kisses TLB robbed us of!), but it's just not that great. Not to everyone's tastes (certainly not mine) heavy focus on Tang trade 101 aside, there are plenty of not quite there moments, pacing issues and literal plotholes. Case in point – how did FL learn to make jewelry? She had one basic design idea the other night, and suddenly she's already crafting finest hairpins in the town in bulk. Just like that? I get that her dad was a genius at it, but pretty sure he didn't develop his legendary skills without teacher and years of training.

Another thing is development of OTP feelings – logically I see when, how and why that happened (more with ML – idk if I should laugh or clap at the writing lowkey implying he won her over with a sob backstory and a few moments of sexually charged skinship same, girl, I sooo get it!), but it still feels escalating too quickly given the somber, serious tone of the main story and how preoccupied with other things both of them are. Frankly, I feel TERRIBLE for having “so soon?!” first reaction to them smooching. Not that I'm a slow burn person – nope!!! - and 17 episodes in is hardly too early, but it should've feel more smooth, yunno? Good thing the chemistry is on fire as ever, lesser CP would've make it crush and burn with such amount of sabotage from their own drama crew... Ofc, I know that fast diabetes romance happened because we're getting a bloody fallout following and afterwards it's gonna be slow and excruciating until getting better again, but I wanted to enjoy all the highs and lows equally. I wonder if cutting scissors went too far on the show – editing keeps shortening high tension/emotional scenes (and kisses – PD so ain't going into my “nice” list anytime soon) for unknown reason, often leaving bare bones only. Almost as if PD lacks the trust in actors to carry key scenes on their own and needing montage/speedrun pacing to make up for that, which is pure BS 'cause they're EATING it. Like ML's crying scene in Ep13 – compare drama cut with bts and fan edit merging two into one (tbh, I'm so mad/puzzled - Yuning's voice acting was the best part here and they just threw it away?!):

Other meh things include SML (who's mainly there to be a preachy lovesick stalker and occasionally flash his official badge in times of dire need – didn't you have an investigation to urgently report about in capital, buddy?), the “quickly turned over a new leaf after being downright horrible” SFL, nuts/candied fruits PPL (wish I was joking) and a bunch of other, hardly interesting people and subplots. In a sense it's like any other female business cdrama – too much stuff to have time to carefully develop anything or anyone. I do like love our resident mother hen and captain of OTP ship, ML's aide, who causes like 90% comedy in the drama. And other members of caravan aren't that bad either when they're all together and behave like people and not just money making robots. Anyway, imma keep watching and waiting for meatier part of the story because if one thing here can be trusted, it's leads bringing in The Feels when plot lets them.

Take2 of “PD sucks, but fansites are always there for us” - the teeth clash start lol:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16Q_cQOQRWc

Btw, Happy Birthday, ZLS! Also lead trio had yet another livestream together – this time a cooking one, where rejected SML tried to salt poison OTP out of jealousy – lmao, they're the whole circus, better than any drama! Haven't seen it with a good subs so far, but if you don't mind MTL:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihcBT17WZ5Y

EARNESTNESS IN SIMPLICITY LOVE GAME IN EASTERN FANTASY: We're having two dramas with tried and tested sparkling OTP as leads, but only this one utilizes said huge asset 100%. Plot? What plot? Does it really matter?))) I mean, there is a bit – if you count “make ML fall for FL through a chain of bonkers hijinks” as a story. But leads and their relationship are front, center and core of show and thanks to the actors it WORKS. I also found super simple emotional bits of this story surprisingly touching – like FL and the system's version of her father (whom she long lost irl via Chinese ToD). Having only a few key players also helps – it's a character driven story, so we actually have time to know these characters and witness their evolution in a comfortable, very smooth pace. Also, visuals! I'd say I expected no less from LBFAD studio, but I also watched LYST from them and that was such a half-assed downgrade, so it's great to see expensive CGI and eye-catching (in “Alice in Wonderland” meets xianxia video game way) pretty costumes again. Not a groundbreaking show or the one that will own my heart, but it has one job – being FUN – and so far it does it well. I'm so behind tho...

HELLO SATURDAY (c-variety): I'm not the biggest fan of game show in general, but with LYN appearing there so frequently I had to. Thankfully, he's always a riot there – pity we won't get an entire episode for TSOPG cast and he had to thirdwheel THE RISE OF NING couple instead, but it worked fine. The “award worthy” acting performance of his left even me impressed and we've got an epic meme out this episode, more on that below:
https://x.com/fandoestrans/status/1853022830688125311

THE FIERY PRIEST 2: I didn't have time yesterday, but I'm SO ready for it!

“Drama news” segment:

- dramas aired already: Tencent-MangoTV-iQiyi's star-studded NORTHWEST YEARS (JinDong, Yu Hewei, Ding Yongdai, Wu Lei, NiNi, Li Jian, Tong Ruixin, Yan Bingyan, propaganda galore patriotic war drama) on November 5th, Tencent's SMILE CODE (Lin Yi, Shen Yue, romcom) on November 8th.

- dramas rumored to air: iQiyi's DEEP LURK (Cheng Yi, Ying Er, Republican thriller) on November 13th, MangoTV's FLOURISHED PEONY (Yang Zi, Li Xian, Tang dynasty business+romance) in December and then its second part in February (both parts are licensed under different Chinese names, so in theory should be allowed to air without standard 1 year pause... we'll see how this clear loophole abuse goes).

- dramas confirmed to air: iQiyi's NORTHWARD (Bai Lu, Ou Hao, retro family melo) is officially scheduled for somewhere November, likely after FOF.

- dramas that just got licensed: dry week – none as far as I know.

- dramas announced: Youku's MOUNTAIN DEITY (Huang Junjie, Ding Xiaoying, fantasy action thriller) confirmed cast and started filming, same with iQiyi's A SINLESS PERSON (Wei Daxun, Sun Qian, thriller).

- casting rumors: iQiyi's CONG JING SHENG YA (Zhang Wanyi, Zhang Tianai, Jiang Wu, police drama), Tencent's BLAZING SUNLIGHT (Song Weilong, Zhao Jinmai + now second leads Xia Zhiguang, Kong Xueer, modern romance).

- and another one for LYN's giant pile of yet to be read script offers – costume detective romcom LOVE IN RED DUST with Li Landi as FL. Plot sounds very much like MAIDEN HOLMES to me plus has PD of THE LONG BALLAD... Make of that what you will:
https://x.com/FKShi/status/1854384175849279793

Thanks @gikata as always for your weekly “Drama News”. Frankly romance is not my forte but murder is (as in) cops/crime mystery. I always go through this segment for police stuff.

Re: iQiyi's CONG JING SHENG YA. MyDramaList has a placeholder for this drama but that is it. No info on cast etc. I will continue to watch out for further developments on this.

Report from the field. I am finishing up my second Youku drama in Youku’s crime White Nights Theater series: THE FIRST SHOT (30 eps) which aired in September. I think it is as good as ESCAPE FROM THE TRILATERAL SLOPES which I gave 5 stars. TFS is another ‘guys’ drama and the 3 MLs (along with the rest of the cast) all been terrific. It takes place in 1997 in the northeast if China.
Earlier this year Viki US picked up another short drama in this series the 10 episode REGENERATION which I will move on to.
I wish Youku had a Roku presence like iQIYI.

CONG JING SHENG YA is still not confirmed, that why, but I've seen a few rumors about it lately and it seems like ZWY will be in it for sure since he's mentioned in every single one.

Speaking of crime thrillers, I'm waiting for DYX and Ning Li's BLACK AND WHITE FOREST that should drop somewhere this month - on Tencent, iirc. Probably won't happen tomorrow per rumors - I assume platform will wait until LGIEF ends.

There was also another show of this genre airing on Tencent this week - THE SILENT STORM - but so far it's only available to mainland viewers with no subs, naturally, so I didn't mention it. Let's see if goes global later:
https://mydramalist.com/758835-the-silent-storm

EFTTS just got one of the most prestigious trophies on Weibo Summit few days ago - likely not the last award for the show.

I think Youku sells most of their hit dramas to either Viki and/or Netflix - at least that's how it is with their idol dramas, idk about other stuff. Overall, the platform is still relatively poor and needs few more years as good as this one to be able compete with Tencent and iQiyi for real.

1

I’m going to give The First Shot a try.
I really enjoyed cop show The Knockout from last year. It is on YouTube

2

@gikata I will definitely keep an eye out for Ning Li’s upcoming crime drama.

@john go for it but a warning. For some reason (Avenue X really liked it but thought Youku didn’t do a good job promoting THE FIRST SHOT) only the first 19 of 32 episodes are available as a playlist on Youtube. I am a subscriber to Youku so in order to watch the final 13 episodes on TV I had to stream the episodes on my laptop and run a 13 foot HDMI cable to my TV. That is why I mentioned it would be nice if Youku had a Roku presence. On other dramas all the episodes have been available by Youku on a playlist on Youtube. The english subs are generally fine which is not always the case on Tencent or iQIYI. I didn’t watch but I know THE KNOCKOUT (2023) (iQIYI) was well regarded.

1

I have a similar experience, Pearl Girl is slick, but I'm detached. Love Game is simple, funny... and very engaging. The scene when Fantasy Father crosses the path with the horse and Heroine gets worried, with flashbacks to Real Father crossing path with the car...that was heartbreaking (and I was so invested).

They should give the characters time to breath. Like with Mom.... I liked the reveal and then suddenly a lot made retrospectively sense... but all happened too fast... and then it was over...

1

@dorotka writer did plenty of interviews explaining the unusual speedy pace as intentional, apparently wanting to achieve 16-episodes kdrama-like vibe... but this is a freaking costume cdrama with 40 episodes, those things are just incomparable and incompatible! Even daring storytelling experiments should be thought over better first.

2

It is doing the show disservice.
The breaking pace here causes less attachment... and less credibility...

1

I've come to the conclusion, prematurely, that this one is on ZLS and the production's team including screenwriter. I like PEARL GIRL enough to watch it for LYN alone, and maybe Shrimp, but for some reason this drama gives me vibes that ZLS doesn't really relish her day job. She's not exactly dialing it in, but she's lost some shine. Maybe the next drama will better suit her.

LYN gains from the drama, experience working in the drama industry alone is to his advantage. He's a multi-platform performer. Let's see what he does next.

I don't really see any problem acting-wise - agree with script being a raw and PD... let's not go there again - but, to be fair, this drama had a very troubled production, going as far as having her own fanbase trying to threaten her into dropping out (long after signing contract!) because they were THIS unhappy with state of things... I wonder if all that wore her down a little. This whole mess also did a number on Yuning, but he's a big boy, older and more life hardened than her. Anyway, I'm glad to see that, being friends, they managed to support each other through it, even if the drama isn't a masterpiece for ages to come after all.

He seems to want take a looong break from Hengdian that modern thriller (villain) role so bad, but producers are clearly fixated on utilizing his period giant alpha ML vibe in costumes. Let's see if CICADA will change things a little.

Btw, general reception of his acting is much better this time around - I'll bring receipts next time, quite an interesting read)))

You know, you are so smart! Good perspective, thank you. A good reminder that a production is in the hands of a team, not just the performers. To me, the story seems jumbled and that's not on the performers. Filmdom is abundantly littered with stories of stars who stepped in to a role, for one reason or another, at the behest of a director or costar from a previous work. So, what you are saying makes sense and the karma earned pays off somewhere down the road.

1

@cliosservant1846 she's still so young! Guess I've reached age where mid-20s start to feel like babies, heh And this is her "transitioning into more mature roles" drama, big new start sort of.

I feel like writer overestimated herself with too ambitious premise. I mean, an epic story including female empowerment, social commentary, Tang dynasty business history lecture, good ol' vendetta arc AND wild rollercoaster romance - all in mere 40 episodes? The math isn't quite mathing even for a math idiot like me here.

Cinema history knows A LOT of production hell stories, but dang, cdramas really take it to a whole new level! Casting carousels, fandom wars, orchestrated rumors and cyber bullying...

1

Gikata, just FYI Netflix picked up PEARL GIRL (Coming Soon). Seems to me, that's pretty big especially since the big screen favors complex action scenes.

Also, thanks for the save on Shrimp. Up to ep. 20 now and holding for Netflix.

I certainly didn't mean to discourage people from watching((( Just couldn't help being my usual critical self. It frustrates me big time that all these issues could've been easily avoided, making a truly great show. Show IS 100% worthy to watch just for 2 leads alone, separately and especially together, but I expected as much and didn't see the point in stressing this obvious fact any further... perhaps I should've, it's already unfair enough that they have to hard carry the drama in spite of technical flaws and impossible expectations platform placed on this project.

Virtuous Business: This is a really nice show. I have been involved in a discussion about the consent or lack of same regarding the finishing hug. And the positions on that subject are interesting, because this show is pretty interesting.
Jeungnyeon: The Star Is Born I just love this show! I love the singing, even if I don’t know the genre and is in no position to say if they fulfil the genre qualification well (as discussed on a general plane in the staff post about Professions in K-drama some time ago). But as a former singer, I can say they sing well enough for me to feel it, and it is also crazy interesting that this culture has existed, and in the 50’s of all times, so recently, in Korea. And considering how that subject is usually treated in K-drama, it’s amazing to see how friendship and shades of queer are mixed with a light hand here. In traditional art.
I have looked for clips from the RL performances, but all I can find are clips from the show.
The Fiery Priest (1): Hmm … that was a weird show. I giffed a good deal about it. I’ll probably not be watching the new season, though.

Not a K-drama:
Cute animal videos: Something not-so-nice on an international scale happened this week, and I couldn’t do anything about it, so I have spent some time watching cats befriending birds or jumping from furniture in a fun way.
SNL: Last week had some good bits
Agatha All ALong: Just your typical coven-with-family-mystery show. Nice to watch with my daughters. One of them turned 21 this week (not a turn-stone in Denmark, that’s 18 for most things and 15 for the rest) and I made a friendship bracelet for her saying posed to be fun*XXI* . Swifties will get it.

As a theatre history professor who has taught about gukgeuk in some of my classes, I'm not sure any gukgeuk videos exist (maybe in some early Korean film archives somewhere?). There are surviving production photos and promotional materials which the show is clearly drawing on. While the form was wildly popular in the late 40's/early 50's, it didn't last for very long, due in part to the rise of film and television.

THank you, wonhwa! Now I know I am not just using the wrong search term.
One might think that someone had been at some performances at some point with a film camera. Maybe for one of those short news wheels that used to run before the feature film in cinemas.
But since they seem to have been in opposition to television, maybe they didn't allow filming.
I'd really have liked seeing how it was with these travelling troupes of teenage girls.

1

Yeah, I do wonder if there are promotional clips in an archive anywhere, but I've never been able to find any on-line. The insane popularity of the actors, especially those who played the male leads, is all true though, and it was claimed that every woman in Seoul saw some of the more popular shows.

0

I would have loved to see a bit of a show *and* to see the audience, the girls outside of theatres hoping to get an autograph.
Did they make merch? Are there puppets and posters and stuff like that, like with the Beatles and the Monkees?

1

It looks like S. Korean artist siren eun young jung's Yeoseong Gukgeuk Project is a multimedia installation piece that includes recreations of performances and interviews with gukgeuk performers. I don't know if it also includes any original footage from the 50's, but her work sounds really interesting, and has appeared in galleries and exhibits around the world.

1

@wonhwa , didn't they teach any vocal technique at all in the theater troupes? I know that is has always been half mumbo-jumbo and half knowledge from experience (today actually with help from anatomy etc). And [SPOILER] the way she behaves with the cave and all of course will do serious damage.
But it seems like she is heading out there with no knowledge of training at all, no tricks to find support, no soft warm-up, as if in that strict culture there is no help whatsoever to actually get better at singing. And therefore it is so easy to make some desperate young girl think that working harder is always better. But is that really historically true? Did they only teach the melody and not even the basics of caring for your voice?
(I admit it fits in with the South Korean "always work harder"-culture that I have complained about before, especially when it comes to creative work. But still? For trainees I would expect simple rules like "never train more than four hours singing in a day" or "never train more than two hours without consulting your coach/teacher" or "always do these breathing exercises".
It is so frustrating also because my throat hurts when I listen to it.

0

Thank you.
As you can see, now I am pestering you. I just think this is so intersting.

0

There actually was a tradition in pansori of training by singing in front of waterfall or in a cave until your throat bled so this isn't just Hyerang being evil (the film Sopyonjae about early 20th century pansori singers actually features this "method" as well). Clearly this was before anyone understood how vocal nodes worked. Insane training regimens (often starting when performers were toddlers) were kind of the norm in lots of traditional Asian theatre forms (Noh, kunqu, Beijing opera, etc.). Today we'd tend to label many of them as child abuse.

1

Wauw ... that is ... insane!

1

And I don't even mean "insane to train children from toddlers", even if what I have heard of the trial-and-error methods for training toddlers in CHina (in Tai chi families: When they don't do it right, you hit them, and at some point they find out what they're supposed to do) is crazy, then it is something I would expect from many cultures in times when childhood isn't higly valued. After all, in Europe boys were castrated to get that combi of a brilliant top with a grown mans powerful torso and lungs. Horrible, but *at least it actually worked*. To just go straight for killing the voice after the motto; If it hurts, it must be good ... in any culture were people have sung - that means all cultures - I would think they'd have figured out it doesn't work that way? 😢😢😢💔
It's like castrating a child so that he can have a lot of children - if we imagine the operation sometimes fails and that this is seen as proof the method works.

1

Ah, I didn't realize you meant performances from that time period. It makes sense that aren't many/any as wonhwa says. I do remember seeing a few clips like this when searching earlier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGJSZhXYp1g

It seems to be the time period, but not the all-female troupes.

wonhwa: how great it is to have you share your knowledge with us. thank you!

A Virtuous Business My joy pill of the week!

Doubt So many problems just because they didn't communicate...

Jeongnyeon - The Star is Born If the FL is not my favorite character, I really like the setting : the era, the costumes, the songs, etc.

Gangnam B-Side They don't try to hide their corruption anymore... It will be fun to watch them working together. There were a lot of familiar faces.

Mr. Plankton First, why I didn't know Lee El was in this drama? Otherwise, the characters were messed up and pretty selfish but it was quite funny.

KBS Special drama : History of Us We got to the point where Nam Da-Reum and Tang Jun-Sang's characters are played by young actors now... It doesn't make me feel any younger. I'm with you on "Face Me." I only watched the first 15 minutes so didn't want to comment much on it in my post, but I struggled with the lack of empathy as well. I'm also not a huge LMK fan, so I'm not sure I'll continue with this one.

Haha, I completely forgot that emergençy was a forbidden word 😂
Trying again:

I understood it differently, that he used to be very empathetic, but because of his traumatic past he doesn't want to get involved anymore (too much pain?). That's also why he changed from Emergençy to Plastic Surgery (and maybe why the show on purpose represents PS in such a calculating cold manner?).

Face Me: Some of the people who are very skilled at learning a lot of Latin names and understanding function and keeping a strict medical praxis do not necessarily have people skills.
I am not saying there are no nice doctors! I have met a lot of really nice doctors.
But *some* doctors have medicinal skills combined with incredible arrogance and should really never be let free without someone holding their hand and telling them to speak nicely.
Medicinal education is often aware of the problem and have workshops in how to speak to human beings. (Also, even the most empathetic person can have a hard time conveying terrible facts to patients and their families, so the workshops are probably good for all the students, not just the interpersonally challenged ones).

yup the ones who manage to make it to and through medical school are not always the friendliest/best communicators. there's an extremely personable and verbal doctor on IG called Dr Beach Gem, and she's so popular now because she is an excellent communicator. I knew a very good communicator/people person who wanted to become a doctor in his country but was unable to pass the entrance exam. It's a shame that he didn't keep trying a few more times to give it a shot, because I think he would have been amazing with patients.

Also I came across a study about surgeons who were arrogant (I think? I forgot what personality trait it was exactly, sorry) and their patients had more complications. Which completely matched my own experience with surgery! My surgeon spoke very sparingly with me lol it was unbelievable how little I saw him, and then when I did, he barely said two sentences. I def. took it personally!

So those people you mention apparently are not good at the strict medical pratice I was talking about. I was imagining that a kind of strictness was the pro to smooth out the con of not being nice. If some doctors are lead to not even do the best possible, maybe because they overestimate themselves, then that's even worse, of course.
Anyhow - I don't want to tack smack about doctors in general, I have encountered more doctors than I would have wished to need, but most of them have been considerate and competent.

LOVE GAME IN EASTERN FANTASY (7)—I picked this up for a light watch and it has delivered that and more. Esther Yu is killing this role (and Ding Yuxi’s overacting fits his character). I wasn’t sure about this one but it won me over by the end of the first episode. It is a flurry of comedy with a hint of mystery that is keeping me intrigued.
Why do I suspect that the big bad is the love Goddess after being turned by betrayal? And what is her connection to our hero? And how is Miao Miao going to survive having lost the game ability to regenerate?

And how can she leave her father? The scene of her sharing her “dream” with her father sneak attacked me with tears.

FAMILY BY CHOICE (6)—THIS is the Kdrama magic I have been missing. Love, love, love. I did wish the Korean version would give the mothers’ voices more time and flesh out their choices —they were so easy to vilify and dehumanize especially as a foil to the fathers. I swing between WANTING to understand them and really enjoying when our family by choice gives them the truth attack. But I will wait till the end and reserve final judgment on that wish.

LIKE FLOWERS IN THE SAND (9)—Kim Beak Du-yah! I needed a comfort (re)watch and I can’t think of a better one. It is as magical the second time as the first.

But once you start with Jang Dong Yoon role it is hard to stop so…

THE TALE OF NOKDU (14)— I stopped halfway when I was watching this live, and now I think it is better binge watched. Beside once again admiring JDY ability to become his role, I admire the casting team. I am enjoying the manhwa world of this story because it is grounded by the sincerity of the actors in their roles. (And seeing pre-EAW Kang Tae Oh as the baddie is a trip.)

RISE OF NING (32)—besides eye-rolls at logic holes, I keep enjoying this. It is a steady watch—not memorable but good enough to keep going. The romance has just started and even though I WANT to root for them, I am not sure about this couple because the romantic acting has been unbalanced so far.

BOSSAM:STEAL THE FATE (11)—Excellent! Jung Il Woo and Kwon Yuri are crazy good in these roles and are drama magic together. I see why this was loved by many. But I am also skipping through the palace politics since years of drama watching allows me to fill in the blanks.

Jeongnyeon: The first k-drama of 2024 that I wholeheartedly love. The plot structure remains the weakest link, but the amazing cast, immersive directing, and unabashed embrace of the agony and ecstasy of the performing arts and female desire are everything I could want in a show. It's so refreshing to see a drama set the screen on fire without a male lead anywhere in sight.

A Virtuous Business: Speaking of men, this week's focus on everyone's relationship issues was less interesting to me than prior episodes, but it's still a solid show.

Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born
I am trying to remember that she is still only a teenager and at times as frustrating as any teenager can be, but maybe the adults should have been more direct in their warnings and told her about her mother loosing her voice. The production and the acting is still excellent.

Family by Choice
This one is pulling my heartstrings! This mix and match family of 5 is so adorable, all the actors gel beautifully. Ju Won has from the start impressed me with her emotional intelligence, clearly inherited from her father. San-ha's confession felt a little rushed, but maybe it was the right thing to do, if he wants Ju-won to see him as a man she can fall in love with and not as the brother she loves.

A Virtuous business
One of the best things here is that there are no mobile phones! All interaction is face to face. The balance between comedy and drama is well done. My guess is that it was Jeong-Suk's mother who found and dropped Do-Hyeon off at the orphanage.

Of the new dramas I only watched BREWING LOVE, but could not finish even the first episode. Sadly disappointing so far, but maybe will give it another shot.

Oh my, that header pic melts my heart! 🥹

@starrygazer I have The Veil on pause. I loved the acting, and the story was intriguing, but the editing was so clunky that I felt sorry for the actors. They kept acting their hearts out and the scenes kept being randomly cut.
But I often think of it. Maybe I'll go back to it some day.

Royal Secret Agent 7/16

This show is so hilarious keeps making me laugh out loud. It is totally light, entertaining, with things happening constantly at breakneck speed so there's never a bored moment.

It's quite interesting how different this show is from Taec's Secret Agent. The biggest difference is that while Taec's drama was quite traditional, even going deep into strorylines about rules, traditions, and superstitions, L's drama feels inexplicably American. Or modern? No it's not even Korean modern. It definitely feels American. I don't know how to explain it well, but the way the characters walk and move, the way nobody bats an eye when the fl goes around in male clothes, and not only the completely covered hanbok, but even the under-dress, the interactions, the background music bits in between scenes, so many things. But the heart that the Koreans do so well is all there so it's very very fun to watch.

I liked both versions. You're right that Taec's version felt more traditional with the balance of romance, comedy, and serious drama (bead boy....).

I'm not sure if L's version was more American, but you're right that there was a more relaxed atmosphere about it. For me, it stood out by making the slapstick comedy its main genre. All 3 leads were allowed to be goofy and a little bit dumb (and Lee Yi-kyung was the goofiest). The drama really felt like like the drama was helmed by all 3 leads as equals instead of the traditional ML+FL + secondary leads.

Also, I'm not sure if it was because it was filmed during the pandemic or maybe because of the royal-secret-agent-travels-from-town-to-town aspect, but I felt like there were a lot more outdoors scenes and outdoor scenes in wider open spaces - which I think changes the feel.

I wish the kdrama industry would make more royal secret agent/investigator dramas since I really like the travelling aspect.

Yes, slapstick is the main genre and in a very tasteful style too! I don't think I cringed even once in 7 episodes.

Hi beanies!
I hope you are enjoying your weekend.

What I am watching:

I keep watching Grand Prince (8 out of 20). This drama has better script than direction. It's very entertaining and fast paced, though.

I am also watching the C-drama The Story of the Pearl Girl (17 out of 40). I can say I'm in love with this show so far. It has everything (adventure, love, comedy and drama) in the right dose and interesting characters. And frankly, Liu Yuning and Zhao Lu Si's chemistry is off the charts.

I have also watched two Korean movies:

_ 60 Days of Summer (2018). It's about the bonding between a lazy teenager boy and his serious grandpa when they have to live together for two months. It's not a "must" movie, the story is simple, the cinematophy is very dark in too many scenes... Not bad, but neither highly recommended. Btw, the ML is Yun Joon Suk, who played the endearing brother of FL in Shining Inheritance.

_ KBS Drama Special The History of Us (2024). This new Special is quite good! An interesting approach to a dark page in Korean history (it immediately reminded me of a famous sageuk which has the same main character and backstory).

What I finished:

C-drama Rise of Ning. It was good, but the FL's feelings for the ML changed too easily from "siblings love" to "romantic love" 🤔

Kept up my spirits this week with:

BREWING LOVE, ep. 2. Dipped into this newly released kdrama, and so far it's working for me.

RISE OF NING, ep. 31. A solid cdrama with very good lead performances by Zhang Wan Yi and Ren Min, plus the added bonus of SML Ci Sha. Looking forward to the horsemanship!

THE STORY OF PEARL GIRL, ep. 17. What's not to like? LYN's voice alone had me at hello.

JOY OF LIFE, ep 26. My happy watch in a week where I really needed the lift. Superb. You know you've got a masterful storyteller when the death of Teng Zi Jing/Wang Yang in episode 8 (?) is so profound it spins every character on a new course. Wang Yang, what a standout performance, amidst so many great performances.

Special note: traveling this week and thanks to Gikata, I've been able to enjoy listening to the fabulous songs from ep. 11, Melody Journey. Highly recommended to cure the blues.

Ongoing kdrama but late to the game:

Family by Choice. 4/16 Easy watch for me since they have followed pretty closely to the original cdrama although made it more compact. Can’t believe that the older brother actor is still pulling off high schooler at 33. Will he start playing a 20 year old when he’s 50?

Finished oldie
Like Flowers in Sand. Very heartwarming and opened my eyes to a new form of wrestling. Could have used more time with the ML and his ?frenemy reconciliation. Felt like that could have added more meat to the bones. Not sure I figured out how/when the FL fell for ML but his puppy devotion to her all along was cute. Did they ever explain the title?

Irish Wish American movie- future community watch movie which per requirements I knew had a happy ending which is exactly what I needed this week.

Started cdrama

Love Game in Eastern Fantasy episode 4. Premise is a bit crazy but somehow it comes across as light, funny and engaging. I hope it stays this way. Another good one for mood improvement.

Judge from Hell Whew, I liked the ending! It's a teensy bit open, but I love how we got all those healing moments with the victims' family and Justitia's interactions with her friends and acquaintances - supernatural and human. Love the callback to the first episode statue scene. Sure some parts didn't make sense sometimes, but it was committed to being fun, campy (in a good way), and cathartic with barely any demon/human relationship angst. And PSH was just killing it week after week!

A Virtuous Business I love seeing these ladies week after week ramping up their business with new sales/marketing ideas and seeing the the town's ladies as being more than gossips. They stepped up to support Jeong-suk and probably saved future women from being the creep's victims. I'm worried about Yeong-bok's husband.

Iron Family: Up through episode 11. I'm not meant for the criminal life. I'm really enjoying the series so far and love how the everyone feels multifaceted, but I'm getting so anxious at the money laundering. So bold to launder a home down-payment's worth of cash at a wedding filled with police!

Go East cdrama. up to episode 35. Got more interesting again once they travelled to Yanle. I have to say that the drama nails it at the warm camaraderie scenes, but really drags out the emotional/serious scenes.

Excited for Fiery Priest 2!

IRON FAMILY: This remains my favorite airing drama thanks to writing that is somehow both comfortingly familiar and surprising. I love how nothing remains a secret for long; that must be a record for fastest reveal of a birth secret, not to mention less intense but perhaps ultimately just as consequential things like the true "forehead kiss/shout joyously outside Da Rim's window" culprit. KJH is utterly charming in this role as a bumbling beta hero who nonetheless might be slowly making his way to the FL's heart thanks to his straightforward loyalty and cuteness. Both the chairman and Tae-woong have similar stoic exteriors with soft, mussy hearts, and although it was a little hard for me to feel for either one this week because the stoic took a turn towards cold, thanks to the writing I do get where they're both coming from: wounded pride. Da Rim needs to abandon her crush on Tae-woong already, though, even if sometimes he appears to send mixed signals (I think she clearly mistook his anger over her saying nice things about Kang-joo as romantic rather than the filial jealousy it actually was). I was thankful, however, that Unni made more sense this week and showed her love for her sister. Finally, what's up with Mom's red cheeks? The actress is obviously wearing extra blush and several characters have commented on them. Was that just about setting up the facial she got? Or her guilt? Or something more?

MR. PLANKTON: It only took 10 minutes for this drama to hook me. It's totally my jam. I'd somehow forgotten how much I love Woo Do-hwan--the voice, the effortless sexiness, the deadpan line reading that somehow still reveals so much--and although I hated "Strong Woman" with a fiery intensity, Lee Yoo-mi is excellent as well. Their chemistry in the flashback round-up of their relationship (which believably captured the highs and lows and all the passion in between) was palpable. This has the same dark fairy tale appeal as "It's Ok," and uses humor similarly well to both break tension and make the characters feel authentic even in the most inauthentic of circumstances. (Case in point: the overwhelmed mom screaming at her husband over the phone because she's pregnant again and he's all like "Kids raise themselves" was darkly hilarious, but then we shifted to the utter heartbreak of Jae-mi begging to take "just one" of that woman's kids.) I devoured the first episode and wanted to watch more, but decided to prolong the pleasure and watch only one episode per day. Can't wait to see how things unfold.

GANGNAM B-SIDES: This is the kind of drama I think people who like to complain about the Westernization of kdramas could point to because like "Queen Woo," it feels like it's trying really hard to be edgy (not as much with the sex--at least not in the first 20 minutes I watched--but definitely in terms of violence and drug use) rather than actually being edgy. I waited until JCW showed up as a pimp (I think?) wearing...

There is a You Tube/Rumble channel , America’s Untold Stories, hosted by Eric Hunley and Mark Groubert.

Interesting look at history and politics. Has a wonderful series on the JFK assassination. I have gone down the rabbit hole that is Watergate, which is not what the media said it was. Ted Kennedy and Chappaquiddick. Crazy insane power behind the scenes in all of these stories. JFK wanted to smash the CIA, they need smashing more so today then ever.

The first impressions kinda killed my enthusiasm for Face Me. But, imma try it for the whole main cast. I'm really glad to note that Han Ji-hyun has enjoyed a career since Penthouse. The Penthouse twins really found a leap from the drama that evolved into what I didn't know again.

PACHINKO: I have just two episodes left to watch in season two. I still find it to be an engaging watch. I think season 2 has been better than the first, there have just been some beautiful moments. This is a show that I never even skip the opening---I just love that dancing scene in the Pachinko parlor. Well, let's see how this goes as I approach the last episode.

PRINCESS'S MAN: I went back in time to watch this historical. I enjoyed it. This was my first time watching Park Si Hoo who looked lovely! Judge From Hell (finale): I really like that OST with the chants.
Iron Family: those flashbacks were EVERYTHING. I need more of the siblings in the past and in the present.

And I hope Crosswalk's dad gives him a hug soon. Poor boy.
Family by Choice: kids, and this is how you're not supposed to treat your family.
Let Free of the Taekwondo Curse (finale): awwww. I really liked this one. I wish they had given this story more time to develop everything it had to say.
Brewing Love: go to the hospital, mate.

And of course beanies made the whole beer thing way more interesting than the drama did.
A Virtuous Business: I felt really bad for Yong Bok and Cat boss these episodes. I hope their story takes a brighter turn this week.
And I hope Geum Hee's husband is alright.
Mr. Plankton (EP1): Why isn't this a Netflix interactive drama where I get to make him escape with Lee Da Hee and have a wild romance with her?
They looked so 🔥 together.

Oh, and I'm loving the cast. Glad to see Lee El and Min Seok again after a long time.

One and a half season of Bridgerton worked its magic and I'm well into the swing of dramas again.

GO BACK LOVER (ep 12): Dropped this. The female lead is a terrible person. She's terrified of commitment and has the audacity to ask her very much in love and committed ex-boyfriend to be friends with benefits. And he aquiesce! Despite loving the divorced couple, this is too much.

KILL ME LOVE ME (ep 2 and some youtube material): Despite them having made this into what seems like a whole different drama than the novel - not bad in itself, mind you - the result is not engaging either. I'm out.

FIND YOURSELF (ep 7): After 1,5 years of hiatus, I picked this beautiful drama back up and it's like I never left. I'm looking forward to tea with blankets during the the cold and dark winter months, all snuggled up watching this community.

LOST YOU FOREVER S2 (ep 11): I understand why people didn't like this, the second part of any story is where things are not epic anymore but turns ugly and gritty. It's still well written but I sense a lot more filler scenes and am slightly worried that a lot of important plot points in the novel may not have made the cut.

LOVE GAME IN EASTERN FANTASY: I couldn't resist the rave reviews. Esther Yu is so delightful and I actually like the slightly different style of clothing and accessories.

BRIDGERTON S2 was good, Anthony has by far been my favourite character since S1. S3 and I seem to be going on hiatus midway. I find Eloise spoiled and conceited.

Back from a vacation!! So much back log and jet lag 🙃!! Been catching up. Hope everyone has been well.

Virtuous Business: All caught up. I do like our girls a lot and love their bond.

Iron Family : All caught up. I like the ill-fated set up for the male lead, as it makes for a good challenge. He is really against a perfect Oppa for now.
And how lovely that it was her mother she saw and identified first. 💝
My favorite drama airing right now.

Hyeri: Don’t think I will continue. Have 4 episodes to go. Reviews don’t seem super positive either. Drop.

Judge Hell: 6 episodes to catch up and reached ep 11. I am looking forward to completing this. Hope it remains entertaining. I love PSH’s wardrobe!!

What comes after love: 2 episodes to finish line. I am not too invested in this show. But I am curious to see how it ends.

Brewing Love: Finished 2 episodes. Episode 2 was better. It felt a bit slow and even dated at times. Hoping to see the chemistry between the leads as I like both of them. Lee Jong Won’s beauty mane did not disappoint.

Face Me: Might be an easy background watch. It didn’t catch my attention and LMK seems to be typecast in such roles. With the episodic format it would easy to watch as you don’t have to remember much from previous week.

Love Game in Eastern Fantasy: It’s coming to Netflix Sunday. So will start then.

I am one of the less than half of the U.S. that took the election really hard—I’m not just depressed, I have a sense of dread that has been weighing me down all week. Unfortunately, I’m afraid my fantasy of political realignment—that Canada decides to annex the entire west coast of the U.S.—is not going to happen. And although I might follow Lee Min-ki’s character in Face Me and become a plastic surgeon in response to my trauma, the tummy tucks I’d be most skilled at are no longer necessary thanks to GLP-1 drugs. It might give me some consolation in that I’d meet a bright and vivacious female detective, who is the best part of that show.

So I have to turn to other kdrama fantasies. Unfortunately what I’ve been watching does not help. Doubt where a neglectful father destroys his daughters life so that she in turn works to destroy his, is more of a cautionary tale of the consequences of bad parenting, so its too reminiscent of the current U.S. political scene. And a Virtuous Business, where 4 charming women are saddled with 4 male losers also reminds me a lot of what was once my country.

So that leaves Brewing Love Is the show good? Well, not so far. A lot of its laughs are from scenes not intended to be funny. Also, as I knew, its theme of an artisan brewer resisting being bought out by a big corporation is cliched and far-fetched. Most brewers I know would sell the second the offer was made, especially if the corporate representative was Kim Sejeong. Also, its relation to beer making as an activity is more tenuous than the hop vines being leisurely harvested by the two loveably (?) loud ajummas who are the supposed comic relief.

Still, at least this show is not Bad Memory Eraser so I can tolerate Lee Jong Won here. And since I even sat through (most of) Uncanny Counter 2— probably one of the worst kdrama sequels ever made—because I like Kim Sejeong, I can stick with this one.

But mostly, I’ve decided to deal with my despair by lying around drinking beer rather than watching it. Also, to escape any thought of U.S. politics, I’ve subscribed to BWF TV, the official channel of the Badminton World Federation. All shuttlecocks, all the time.

Sending hugs to you as I am also in that less than 50%. I am still reeling from the realization and the unbelievable outcome. Peace.

As another member of the less than 50% I feel all of this too. I guess it's healthy to drown my sorrows in dramas instead of soju though?

I'm right here with you. Kdramas, cat videos, and chocolate have been my consolation and escape this week. Need to find a way to fight but for now it's enough trying to handle depression and anxiety. Hoping Canadian annexation sweeps down to include MN along with the west coast.

I was still in my recovery mode from LOVE IN THE BIG CITY so it was hard to move on.
I tried to watched, but mostly FF through THE JUDGE FROM HELL, but it was not working for me. PSH has never been my favorite (I know many loved her in this), but I'm still not a fan. And as cute as KJY is, the chemistry was not there for me as much as I wanted it to be.
I finally went back into my "never-ending" watch list and chose 2020's MR. QUEEN. What fun this was!! And the perfect "pick me up." Shin Hye Sun was amazing! And Kim Jung Hyun!! Loved it!
It is so helpful to read everyones' reviews to help me decide what's next. Definitely will watch IRON FAMILY and maybe FAMILY BY CHOICE.
I was so looking forward to MR PLANKTON, but not sure I can take a sad ending right now.
Hope all have a great week!

I cannot with corruption in current time. So Dong Jae the good or the bastard is on hold until I get back some emotional bandwidth.

Corruption in ancien time is acceptable, in part because of the beautiful costumes and sets. Empress Ki takes me to another place and time. It took me months to overcome the whining emperor, but now the story is going full speed.

In need of fluff and comfort, I started Love me, love my voice. The promise were : no conflict, no rival, no jealousy, no annoying character. I found : lots of music and food descriptions. (where are the transcripts of the recipes ??). Ok, the story is maybe a little light. However so far each episode made me smile fondly, so that is just what the doctor ordered.

I was watching Black (the one referring to Meet Joe Black, which apparently was more popular in South Korea than here), but felt a need to switch to lighter fare and now in mid A Poem a Day, which is more fun than I expected (somehow the title gave me the impression it's a more moody or melancholy show). The doppelganger is hilarious.

I agree, the title made me mentally roll my eyes the first time I heard it. I didn't give it a try until my beloved Lee Joon-hyuk happened to be in it. It turned out so sweet!

I remember APAD was expected to be Lee Yu-bi's springboard to lead roles but she went back to playing secondary character roles like Ruby in Yumi's cells and Mo-ne in 'the Escape of the Seven'.

I know right?! I became very fond of her in APAD! And was thinking she is going to be the next in demand FL! She is so good on the screen and has personality and charisma. I really don't understand why this happens...

I mean, I rate her very highly. She's up there with my all-time faves. FL material 100%. She has that perfect blend of sweetness and toughness that I love in FL's. It's very natural and unforced. Some sweet actresses try too hard to act tough on the screen. She doesn't have to. Very charming quality. I haven't watched Escape of the Seven because I just don't like that franchise very much.

If you're in the mood for a similar sweet drama as A Poem A Day, it reminds me a bit of Let's Eat. It also features touching sayings in each episodes and has a warm and sweet vibe. Also features adorable and funny supporting cast. I fell hard for the second male lead.

I watched What Comes After Love. It was okay, but a bit boring. The FL was really immature to push responsibility for her happiness/ loneliness on someone else, but I gave her a pass until the Korea part when her resistance seemed just a bit overdone.

Have started Faith. LMH's role hasn't gotten off the ground yet - I'm assuming it will since I've only watched 4 eps - but he's beautifully coiffed and outfitted so I've got patience :) The FL is spunky but sometimes annoying. We'll see if she grows on me or not...

I finished 'Good Partner' awhile ago and I started missing me some Nam Ji-hyun, so I went back to 2016 and have been rewatching 'Shopping King Louis' (I refuse to call it 'Shopaholic Louis'). No wonder I fell in love with K-dramas back then, its the most charming drama in the world, Well worth the watch

A Virtuous Business 👙 ep7-8 I like that we are exploring more about our ML's story since I'd hate for Yeon Woo Jin just to be there as a possible love interest. I like our four ladies so much and I am glad that the show is also taking turns to explore the story of each. I worry for Yeong Bok's husband but they are lucky that they have a detective on their side. I kinda wish there were more episodes so we can stay with our characters a little more. Also I think we already know Do Hyeon's mom.

The Judge From Hell 👠ep13-14 *finale* And we have a somewhat hopeful ending. It still went into the typical test of goodness by our resident angel. The theology need work since the characters created are confusing me. But Gabriel acted like expected since the HEA needed a heavenly intervention. I am okay with the ending since Kang Bitna/Justitia, as a character, couldn't have the cookie cutter HEA. It will be a continuous test for her so she potentially have her real HE. This show was entertaining but do not think too much about the plot.

Gangnam B Side 🚔 ep1-2 I watched for Ji Chang Wook and I am staying so I can watch the bad guys get caught. The show is making me rethink all the scandals in k-entertainment particularly Burning Sun. The character Jooni makes me wonder if any of the idols involved are like him irl. Its particularly scary and makes me angry too. Its just driving home the possibilities of how awful any person can be given enough money, power, and influence but lacking in morals and conscience. These people should be caught and put in jail for a long long time.

Love Of Nirvana 🎭 ep31-40 *finale* There will always be winners and losers in any war. Casualties are a given. Some could've been avoided but this will not be a wuxia if everything is happy in the end. We tied up the loose ends and not everything is rosy. I am not crying. 😭😭😭 I think I have become an Allen Ren/Ren Jia Lun because I liked his portrayal of the ML. Enemies to Lovers is my favorite trope and it is done so well here. Anyone in the mood for a rollercoaster of emotions should watch this. Any recos for an Allen Ren drama?

Kill Me Love Me 🗡 ep3 on pause. I needed to wrap up LoN first.

The Story of Pearl Girl 💎🦪 I will wait for this to show in Netflix.

Varieties:

Europe Outside My Tent: Romantic Italy - I love watching this show. I get to see the parts of Italy I wasnt able to see when I toured around before the pandemic. Ra Mi Ran got to lead a new group of actresses to go camping with her.

Road to Kingdom: Ace of Ace - the groups all did great. One of my fave groups got to win as runner ups. They were amazing in their final performance. I personally think their stage performances were always well done and they are the only ones who I think are consistently doing live singing. I also like the other younger groups who are great dancers. Look up Oneus finale stage and also their other 3 stage performance. For the finale I also enjoyed Younite's. Sadly another group I liked, Tempest, was eliminated in the last episode. They almost made it to the finals.

Still watching 'Family By Choice', but I'm struggling to care for the female lead's character. That character was a much more interesting and fully-rounded person in the original version. Here she feels like she is whatever she needs to be for plot purposes, making a sudden leap from cute & dumb student to acute businesswoman...

'Face Me'. Oh, my word. It's like the writer had a tick list of tropes. (Male Lead with Traumatic Memories? Check. Competent Female Cop? Check. White Truck of Doom? Check.) And I'm really in the mood for a no-brain, trope-filled k-drama at the moment, so this is great.

Just started 'Mr. Plankton'. It's a bit darker than my normal tastes, but still unexpectedly funny. And Woo Do-hwan and Lee Yoo-mi are both fabulous. I don't mind if it has a sad ending, as long as the ending stays true to the rest of the story. (Ahem. 'The One and Only'. Ahem.)

Tried 'The Story of Pearl Girl' but it seems I just don't get on with short format dramas.

TSOPG is not a short drama, it's 40 episodes ~45 minutes each. Did you watch it on YT? They only have highlight videos there, not full version. Try Youku or wait a bit until it shows up on Netflix.

You're not alone in this confusion - usually Youku uploads their dramas fully there, just slower than VIP schedule, but this time they REALLY wanted those sweet subscription money it seems))) Maybe it will be added later after drama finishes, idk.

Having finished Dear Hyeri whenever that was, last week sometime, I didn't get into anything else right away. I watched the first few episodes of Love in the Big City, which were amazing and marvelous and everything. Then I was afraid to keep going because it could only go downhill! Ha! Maybe I'll finish it this week.

I also watched the first two episodes of Brewing Love. I wasn't into it but I did watch until the end, so maybe I'll keep going.

Am I being weird, not finishing one show because I liked the start too much but maybe finishing one I didn't like? Whatever.

I watched all of Hellbound this week. Usually I would just skip something like that. In fact, I ignored the first season when it came out. But this week I watched all twelve available episodes on Netflix.

Hellbound fit in incredibly well with the alienation I was experiencing about the US election. Like, basically, 100% mental mapping--the giant monsters were like the COVID pandemic & the other fallout from global warming. The two teams of people trying to capitalize on the scariness of people suddenly being dragged to hell were like...the two political parties in my country. Except then there was also a political party as well. I guess everything is like this now. Also no one cared about children or old people or sick people, all insisting that they were "good" while engaging in acts of extreme violence. Yes, well. (Was it a problem that one of the lead actors was replaced in the second season? No, they actually made that work pretty well.)

Last night I watched the first episodes of a Japanese anime called Dandadan. The opening credits theme song is by Creepy Nuts. I got into Creepy Nuts last year by accident through one of my students.

I also finished a couple of library books, mostly older books I had been meaning to read. One book that came out recently that I just started (and have not yet finished!) was Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Older. I really liked her Centenal Cycle trilogy, which was all about idealism gone wrong.

Also, I'm hosting the Beanie Bookclub today. I'm not going to tag everyone on this thread too! If you've read the book, Almond by Sohn Won-pyung, come on over to my fan wall.

I feel you on Love in the Big City, and I hope that you will be able to finish it. It was so beautifully made and was an emotional watch, but I loved every minute of it. All of the cast were wonderful. It didn't end the way I wanted, and it left me a bit traumatized for several days, but I am definitely glad I watched it. So, maybe, I am talking myself into watching MR. PLANKTON??

After The Judge from Hell ended I don't have any ongoing drama that capture my heart. Still watching Family by Choice but it just to fill in my week.

Instead, I rewatch Secret Garden and then since I miss Hyun Bin I rewatch Crash Landing on You and I'm obsessed with this drama and Hyun Bin all over again.

I didn't know I'll feel this same again after so many years past. I knew I love Hyun Bin since Secret Garden but I didn't remember I love him this much XD

I even more obsessed with Hyun Bin that I watch his movies!! The thing that I've never done before LOL
