Brewing Love: Episodes 5-6

This week, our brew master wrestles with his growing feelings for our beer saleswoman, while she is forced to choose between her promise to him and her promise to save her beloved sales team.

Brewing Love: Episodes 5-6

After wrestling with his feelings in response to Yong-joo’s hoobae’s supposed crush on her, Min-joo concludes that the emotions coursing through his veins aren’t his. There’s no way he likes Yong-joo. But when he asks the hoobae, KANG BEOM (Ryu Won-woo), about his feelings for Yong-joo, Beom laughs off the idea and insists that it’s just respect and admiration for his sunbae. Min-joo doesn’t believe him, though. I mean, Mr. Empath’s spiking heart rate has to be a side effect of his absorption of Beom’s emotions, right? Hehe.

The TF team meets to fix a six-month timeline to launch the Min-joo × Jisang collaboration beer, and Ah-reum’s Gen Z hoobae refuses to be assigned any extracurricular tasks during the meeting. Yong-joo is a little upset when she thinks about it, and she gets into another round of “I’m fine” vs. “you are not fine” with Min-joo. Yong-joo expels the negative emotions when she joins Beom to — non-maliciously — badmouth Gen Z, and she thanks him for trying to make her feel better. But Min-joo turns pouty because he wasn’t the one who made her feel better. Lol. Maybe next time he will actively think of ways to lift Yong-joo’s mood instead of simply calling her out on whatever emotions she’s trying to hide.

Brewing Love: Episodes 5-6

JooJoo end up having drinks together at the village pub (thanks to the matchmaking ahjummas), and Yong-joo shares her K-drama female lead story of growing up without parents and having to work multiple part-time jobs — which is how she learned to hide her feelings because she didn’t want others to see her as weak or pitiful. Min-joo shares that he doesn’t drink as much because it makes him have a headache. However, he likes the buzzy feeling that accompanies heavy drinking, because he’s able to drown out external voices and focus on the sound of his breathing. Yong-joo tells Min-joo to let her know if he ever needs time alone while working with the team, and in return, he tells her to let him know if she ever needs company.

At this point, Min-joo’s grin is wider than a ten-lane highway, but our brew master denies his feelings for Yong-joo — even when he spots his stupid-in-love reflection in the glass. Smh. Min-joo is further charmed when Yong-joo (and Chan-hwi) save a drowning lady at the beach during the TF team’s workshop — and here, we learn that Chan-hwi was also former special forces. No wonder he easily won all the games at the team dinner last week. For what it’s worth, Min-joo is not the only one participating in the falling-in-love Olympics because Ah-reum is starting to feel a little something for Chan-hwi. (By the way, Chan-hwi already found out that Ah-reum is rich after trailing her to one of the convenience stores she owns.)

Oblivious to the ping-pong match between Min-joo’s heart and his brain, Yong-joo lives her best and charming and badass life throughout the workshop — and we get more scenes of Min-joo falling harder in love, catching himself in the act and spiraling at the realization. Lol. For a photography enthusiast who never takes pictures of people, Min-joo captures Yong-joo with his lens, and by the end of the workshop, he comes to terms with his feelings for her.

Min-joo returns from the trip to the news that the villagers have accepted a large order from wholesalers who fell in love with Naro beer at the village festival. They’d need to put in a lot of work to handle the volume of orders, and the village head is skeptical about Jisang’s commitment not to interfere with Min-joo’s work at the brewery. Min-joo affirms his trust in Yong-joo and assures the villagers that she won’t let that happen. Unfortunately, Jisang’s competitor announces their plan to release a new beer, and the TF team is ordered to shorten their launch timeline from six to three months to beat out the competition. Uh-oh.

Brewing Love: Episodes 5-6

Yong-joo’s protest falls on deaf ears, and the marketing director reminds her that the faster she launches the collaboration beer, the faster she can save the Busan branch. A helpless Yong-joo visits Min-joo to apologize for not being able to keep her promise, but he makes her leave and she assumes he’s disappointed in her. But while Min-joo is indeed disappointed, his anger is directed at the situation itself, and his curt dismissal is because he doesn’t want Yong-joo to run into the villagers — who are upset with her because the shortened timeline will affect their production at the brewery.

Yong-joo belatedly realizes that she never reported the timeline to the higher-ups, so how did the CEO know their planned launch date was in six months? All roads lead back to Ah-reum — who was ordered to report the TF team’s activities to the planning director. That weasel director must have tattled to the CEO in his attempt to take all the credit for the development of the collaboration beer. Tsk. Yong-joo confronts the weasel and tells him to leave her people out of his fight with the marketing director. And yes, as a member of the TF team, Ah-reum is now part of her people, and she will no longer leak information to the planning team. *Mic drop*

Ah-reum apologizes for being a mole, and Yong-joo says to put it behind them and figure out a way to make the apology count. The TF team can’t do anything about the shortened timeline, so they decide to help out their brew master — who’s drowning in work because the villagers have abandoned the brewery in favor of massage chair PPL. Smh. Thankfully, Min-joo and the team are able to meet up with the wholesalers orders and all is well again.

Chan-hwi notices Ah-reum has been moody the whole time, and he goes down to the River of Isolation to cheer her up. According to Ah-reum, as she advanced in the ranks at work, her juniors looked up to her and she became afraid of making mistakes. It’s exhausting having to wear a facade of perfection, and she compares herself to Yong-joo who doesn’t care about whether or not she appears perfect to others. “[Yong-joo] neutralizes all the effort I put into appearing impressive,” Ah-reum says, and she admits to envying Yong-joo. It’s a vulnerable moment for Ah-reum, and Chan-hwi comforts her with a beer metaphor. But of course he finds time to flirt afterwards, and wraps up the conversation by saying she’s pretty. Heh.

Brewing Love: Episodes 5-6

Speaking of flirting, Min-joo proves to be more than just a master of brewing when he brings Yong-joo to the famous second floor of his house. “You’ve entered a place where no one can,” he replies, when she asks why he’s being so nice to her and why he took her picture at the workshop when people aren’t his photography subjects. Yong-joo immediately malfunctions on hearing Min-joo’s reply, and she decides to flee with the picture before her fluttering heart explodes. Min-joo refuses to yield the picture, and he goes on to say, “I don’t hold back on things I’m sure about. Because I really like it.” *Fans self* Yong-joo about dies at this point, and I think I died a little, too. It is always the quiet guys who do the most.

Anyway, before the tension in the room swallows us all, Min-joo clarifies that the thing he likes is the picture. Why, you little! Is my emotional investment in this scene a joke to this man? Yong-joo’s relief at the turn of events is as palpable as my disappointment. But I understand Min-joo’s intention to step back and give Yong-joo space to make sense of her feelings first. He clearly knows the effect he has on her, and between this brewmaster and his beer, I’m not sure which is smoother.

The week ends with Min-joo’s visit to Busan to see his kid brother. His stepmom informs him that his dad stepped out to escort a guest home — it’s the person who saved Min-joo six years ago, and he’s surprised that his dad is in contact with his savior. Dad returns with the savior in tow, and why of course, Min-joo’s savior is none other than Yong-joo! Ha! From drowning people to accident victims, Ms. Former Special Forces has saved so many people in her lifetime, she can’t keep count; neither can she remember their faces. Until now. But we can’t blame her because a certain dad told her that the son she saved travelled abroad, so she obviously wasn’t expecting to have been interacting with the dude in Korea.

It was fun watching Min-joo work his way up to the acceptance stage of his feelings for Yong-joo, but my good sis is still stuck in the denial stage. For someone who never drinks at home, Yong-joo had no problem drowning herself in soju after being forced to break her promise with Min-joo no thanks to the rescheduled timeline. Let’s not even talk about how she’s suddenly so self-conscious around him. Our brew master’s aura is intoxicating, and for the sake of our collective mental health, Yong-joo needs to accept her feelings so that their romance can kick off ASAP!

So far, this show is exactly what I was hoping it would be. Beautiful people, beautiful situations, beautiful absence of love triangles. And who knew Ah-reum would end up being the most relatable character with her crippling imposter syndrome? I think the only people in the world surprised that Yong-ju is the one who saved Min-ju were those two characters, but I’m a little trepidatious now that we’ve had a little more detail there. It definitely looked like a suicide attempt and while Min-ju seems to be doing great these days and managing his empathy well for the most part, I’m worried we’re going to get sucked back to some trauma where he absorbed someone’s despair and ended up overwhelmed. I’d rather just slowly show his dad that this is not the weakness the General thinks it is.

I definitely thought those conditions Min-ju had were written into the contract they all signed… Get it in writing next time, Brewmaster! I’m also over here positively snickering at the skinniest ever ex-special-forces member, but I’m giving him a pass because he’s so sweet and fun. One of my favorite moments this week was after he and Yong-ju jumped into the ocean, and she saw Min-ju coming with his suitcase and knew immediately he was about to have everything they needed.

And lastly, whatever Min-ju is doing to his hair, I hope he keeps doing it. Some of my favorite ML hair in a while. (My face when he looked in the mirror and wondered if he should have cut it = 😱) An intoxicating aura indeed, @unit .

💯 The absence of love triangles - yes! I was fully expecting they’d cook up Ah-reum & Min-Joo as potential match, because on paper he is a much better fit than Chan-hwi - given the „expectations“ she talked about with the matchmaker. Glad this detour was not thrown into the plot…

It’s also lovely to see how Min-Joo & Yong-Joo are growing closer, noticing how they can rely on one another. I fully melted when he noticed she was blocking an edge of a table for him in case he might bump into it („This person gets me!“), and now her being so sure about the contents of that magical suitcase 🫠 Adorable!

And yes, I’m enjoying „the pretty“ very much, too. 👏💖🍻
Always enjoy a good Mane of Glory 😂, plus all the diffused, pastel colors… Exactly what I need at the moment. (I also expected to be bugged by the over-the-top villagers, but somehow I’m not. It helps so much that they are meaning well and have their brew master at heart.)

Fully agree on all points! It took me a second to warm up to the villagers, but the fact that none of them is overly screechy goes a long way. 😂

Yes Chan Hwi being a special forces member is not at all believable, but we will believe for the sake of the drama.

LOL yup, Chan Hwi looked so skinny. It was a wonder his jean shorts held on without a belt. I had to replay the scene..to double check. ;D

The show gives me a lot of 'pretty'.. But yet, I have not watched ep 6. There is nothing that makes me want to click next, but while watching it I am satisfied (with little FF).
I like the leads. They are kind and thoughtful. I love that everyone is falling for the FL!! lol. Don't blame them. The whole heartbeat thing was done well.

Yes! Loved the moment when they were all in awe of her and there was universal heart-fluttering!

Lol, we already knew that she was the one who saved him. Right now he is just flirting with her, I'm curious if after this he will go full steam ahead.

I think he was telling the truth when he said he doesn't hold back when he's sure about something! But to me that doesn't mean he's just going to steamroll into the situation. I think he wants to get her thinking about him a bit differently, but if he then gives her a minute to sort things out, that would seem totally consistent with his character - especially given the shock of her being the one who saved him years ago.

Oh I didn't mean steamroll her when I said full steam ahead. I meant finally ask her out instead of just flirting. However, to your point, he wants her to see him differently first. I get that.

I was made very uncomfortable, I'm afraid, by the way he went about his "flirting." He invites her into his sanctum sanctorum, shows her his innermost self (which she fully recognized), came into close physical proximity...and then played the "Korean doesn't need a defined subject so when I say 'I like this,' you're invited to hear 'I like YOU' but instead, no, I totally meant 'I like this photo .'"

Booo, Min-ju. That's teasing, not flirting. You already know exactly how she feels!! You felt her heart race! You don't need to test the waters.

Don't play with her. Love her. Tell her how you feel and let her take her time with this information.

Beanies' result : 100% \o/

Chan-hwi was a soldier too and Yong-Joo was the one who saved Min-Joo.

Beanies have too much experience with dramas, nothing can't avoid their sharp eyes!

Otherwise, for the drama... I find it a little bit bland.

As often is the case, I find myself agreeing with all the comments above-I don't think anyone is arguing that this is an all time great rom-com, and as @kurama says, its (maybe more) than a bit bland, resembling a most Korean beer I've tasted.

But so far all the leads are not just beautiful, they are also decent people--even Ah-reum is just trying to hard to please, maybe win a little belated love as a successful adult from her neglectful professional parents. And who cannot adore Kim Se-jeung, able single-handedly to face down a group of beer distributor thugs who are trying to undermine her product! That was an exciting action packed moment--the threat of Likey Beer not being available at bars or restaurants!

I'm with @unaspirated, I'm a little worried about a descent into trauma. Every character, even excessively confident Chan-hwi, is at risk, given the fact there is half the show left. That's why I'm hopeful all leads will keep having these little heart to heart chats, soothing each other using bad beer metaphors that don't make sense if you think a lot about them. (How did reinheitsgebot, the German beer purity law, apply to Ah-reum's insecurity again?)

Anyway, my only real regret about these last two episodes is that Poto, the cat, was no where to be seen when Min-joo was giving Yong-joo a "tour" of his place. Does Poto not approve of the relationship? Now that would be a relationship crisis, like when good beer turns "skunky" when exposed to light. And if you don't understand what I'm trying to say by that metaphor, you are not alone!

I liked that there wasn't a love triangle after how things look last week! Instead, it was a little challenge for Min Joo to figure out the new emotions he was feeling were actually his, heh. He was uncertain at first, but oh man, it was lovely seeing him all smitten! And then he had that sly confidence when he sensed her mutual attraction. That scene in the photography room was well played, haha.

Thank goodness Ah Reum isn't so bad. Yong Joo taking charge of her team and confronting the planning director was delightful.

I thought the drowning lady looked kinda close to the shore so it took me a minute to focus on the scene. Anyway, any type of rescue situation puts me on edge and fills me with relief when the person is saved/crisis averted. It was still heart fluttering watching both Yong Joo and Chan Hwi. He just slayed me because he was being serious for once. And this is before he took off his shirt! XD

So far, I'm liking this easy-going, charming drama. Kind, good people. Hidden smiles, nice flirting going on. There's no frustrating angst or conflict yet. Hopefully, it won't be a major damper on the show.

Thank you very much, @unit, for the recap! I've been waiting for this since the site I've been watching the drama from is down right now. I could watch ep. 6 but not ep. 5, ergo, I haven't seen both. I would have loved to see Min-joo bumbling about confessing his feelings!

@unit, your writing keeps getting better and better, I had to read some of these lines out to my brother. Keep up the good work. I LOVED these episodes and then they did the "REVEAL". Next week is going to be rough. The scene when he sees himself in the mirror smiling like a fool, Oof my heart. Then the whole second floor scene, THIS MAN !!!! I was holding my breath.... Poor Yong ju, she's in trouble and she doesn't know it.

Has anyone noticed that he keeps touching her? Like you can only use "dust" as an excuse so many times...

Chan hwi, Chan hwi, Oh Chan hwi. I lowkey love this man. Baek Sung chul was the only part of " Once Upon a small town" I missed.

Thank you for the recaps Unit.
I just don't know with this show, it's a weird watching experience.
I really want to like it but episode 5 was a bit boring to be honest. Episode 6 is only slightly better.
I"m tired of the show continuously hitting me over the head telling me how great the FL is and how many people she has saved, for example watching her go and rescue some random person on the beach and do CPR while on a business trip.
Yet, she leaves her only family member, her grandmother at home to manage by herself (yes she has a career but not full time) when she very obviously is portrayed as about to fall and not able to cope. Who means more to her?
I like both lead actors but I don't see any chemistry.
There are a lot of slow motion close ups but all that does is show how pretty they both are.
I don't think the show has made me care in any way for them to be together and feels somewhat lacking and empty of substance.
The ajumma's, village chief and other local characters feel cartoonish and very much used as "paint by numbers" plot devices.
Why has the cat dissapeared? Bring back the cat.
