Seo Hyun-jin packs her Trunk to marry Gong Yoo

The first promos have dropped for Netflix’s new mystery-melo The Trunk, uniting Seo Hyun-jin (Why Her) with Gong Yoo (The Silent Sea) in arranged matrimony — until the one-year contract do them part.

It’s a situation that requires everyone’s informed consent, but when Noh In-ji (Seo Hyun-jin) rolls up with the titular trunk in hand, the air surrounding Han Jung-won’s (Gong Yoo) austere abode is haunted with unease. There’s much unsaid that we’re seeing in the visuals of each scene, emphasizing the contrast between all the mismatching elements and forcing me to stew in my own impatience, wanting to know what the heck is going on.

Eom Ji-won (Cold Blooded Intern) presides over the all-important ceremony, smiling at our not-so-happy couple in an ornately decorated but empty hall. For In-ji, this is all routine having already been “married” four times through her work with the NM company and Jung-won is now her husband number five.

But what’s even more curious is Jung-won’s side of the story in this strange scenario because his ex-wife Jung Yoon-ha (Big Bet) is the who put him up to it. She calls it both a punishment and a vacation that she’s giving Jung-won – whatever that means – and In-ji seems to look at her with scorn.

The final sequence then leaves us with more questions as the teaser ends, with In-ji’s trunk becoming central to the story’s mystery, somehow thrown into a lake before it’s fortunately (?) discovered.

Based on a popular novel by the same title, Netflix’s The Trunk will be releasing next month on November 29 with production led by PD Kim Kyu-tae (Our Blues, Live) and writer Park Eun-young (Hwarang).

It looks dark and cold... Not the marriage contract trope I imagined 😅

But I love both actors!

Who cares? lol

I watch for Gong Yoo. I prefer that it be good, but I'm not that picky.

It’s totally not what I expected and it gives me the Little Women vibe - sleek yet dark.

But, like others, it’s Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin after all. I will watch it when 29 Nov clocks in.

I endured "Why Her" for Seo Hyun Jin. With Gong Yoo in the mix, the show doesn't even have to try.

Honestly, I don’t care what’s in that trunk. You could put me in that trunk as long as there is WiFi and I can stream this show. I only care that Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin will be on screen together.

My favourite Gong Yoo moments have been seeing his sense of humour flash onto the screen, teasing his FL with a smile, or maybe a funny silent side-eyed "whaaat?" look at partner-in-crime (ie. Lee-Dong Wook as the Grim Reaper in 'Goblin'). Of course I loved him in 'The Squid Game' because of the affability he lent to his character, which made you WANT to believe that he and his suitcase of money at the subway, were legit and he would be an okay guy after all. NOT. So as much as I would like his character to bring some light easygoing moments to 'The Trunk', I know I'm being delusional. I just hope he isn't the all-business 'edgy Space Man from 'The Silent Sea'. Having said all that, funny or edgy, my 'ship' will go with him when the drama lifts off in November. Goon Yoo is a treasure... a veritable Korean George Clooney.

Very true... Gong Yoo is a pleasure to watch when there's some humor and bromance in the script, such as in Coffee Prince and Goblin. His role in Silent Sea was just a supporting role and honestly it could have been anybody.

I had read only the blurb for this drama, so I thought this would be a light contract marriage romcom... but this trailer makes it seem more like a thriller.

Based on the novel, now that I look into it, it might be a sharp satire on the institution of marriage and the treatment of women.

It sounds like there will be some romance, though

Presumably all 8 episodes will be available on Netflix on November 29.
Very dark trailer indeed.

It seems Netflix’s PR operation is on the job.
The english translation of the source novel: “The Trunk” (2015) by Kim Ryeo-ryeong will become available on November 19 at (where else) Amazon.
That being said, perhaps a SP0ILER WARNING has to be issued before checking out the novel because the short synopsis has a significant difference in the ML’s story than as presented above in the Netflix dramatization.
Nevertheless I will be there. Believe it or not Netflix’s THE SILENT SEA (2021) is my only Gong Yoo drama and I enjoyed his performance there.

Gong Yoo? Where have you been?!!! Glad you're back. Here's hoping this is a good watch but then, there's Gong Yoo! It does look interesting though so I'll be there.

I'm happy to see him active in dramaland but just curious and confused why he picked this one? Witty script hopefully?

Mystery-melo you say!? Looks more like an edgy dark thriller. Also no romance with Gong Yoo as your ML. Tut, tut. What a wasted opportunity. Anyhow, all nitpicking aside I'll be there come Nov 29. 😂

So looking forward to this! Hoping my that wishes for this to be a sophisticated drama for adults are not dashed however both leads are pretty good at picking their projects. I'm in the minority that loved 'Why Her'.

The cast is the bomb just as a intresting premise but i was way too distracted by how much thin Seo Hyun-jin looks,in my eyes she lost way too much weight :(

We have so many dramas with romance or romance as their sub-theme to choose from these days. But, we don't get to see Gong Yoo in many dramas these days. So, I don't care if Gong Yoo comes with a romance or not, as long as Gong Yoo comes with it.
