In a recent interview, actress Kim Ha Neul stated that she is seeing a lack of scripts being offered to her and other actors. In the past she would get multiple offers, but now she is lucky to get one. She did not reference ageism as a reason. But it could reflect an accelerating decrease in the number of productions. In 2022, 135 k-dramas were produced, in 2023 it was 125, and this year it will be less than 100.

It is getting bad enough that the Korean government is getting involved to help producers. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Science and ICT formed a 600 billion won ($454 million) investment fund to finance Korean entertainment. The government will utilize the fund to help domestic production studios adapt popular Korean intellectual property across multiple formats rather than selling its rights to overseas streaming platforms. Domestic investment firm Korea Growth Investment Corporation will manage the fund; firms including SLL JoongAng, CJ ENM, Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK) and the Korea Development Bank (KDB) will contribute capital in addition to the government.

But this fund does not immediately help studios that pre-produced series without a network or distributor. Overseas OTTs want to own the IP and not pay residuals. And they have studios who completed series over a barrel since local Korean networks and streaming platforms have been cutting back.

But Kim’s plight can also be viewed as cost cutting higher paid actors. Fro example, rookie actress Hong Hwa Young beat out 100 other actors for the lead in the new SBS series Treasure Island. It is a risk to have an inexperienced actor lead a series, but clearly the lower appearance fee is what the network wants as a hedge and to appease a big actor agency, BH.

Lee Yuri complained two years ago that scripts were drying up. Even though he had several successful series, she got no lead offers after 2022. During the pandemic, she was one of four hosts for a family travel variety show. Variety shows apparently now stunt drama opportunities. Last year, she went to China for a support role in a Chinese series that has yet to air. I recently saw that she is hawking department store products on the internet.

To be fair, TREASURE ISLAND is dual MLs drama with Park Hyungsik and Heo Joon Ho, so this rookie actress likely isn't going to actually headline the show in any form. Hence her questionable skills/star power are hardly an issue. Wouldn't be surprised if her part is in fact rather small/insignificant, but her management just media-plays the hell out of it.

Also the rookie actress is from BH Entertainment so she has Lee Byung Hyun’s name and brand backing her. Lately BH entertainment actors have been booked and busy with many major OTTs backing projects with their actors. She could be an asset towards getting that Netflix or Disney+ deal for international broadcast. Additionally, KHN is over 40 so as long she accepts the fact that she is no longer female lead material she’ll have plenty of scripts available to her. Lead actors refuse to back down to supporting actor roles which leaves them with fewer opportunities.

That too. It's an SBS drama, no word on international distributor yet.

Age aside, I read that KHN hasn't had a ratings hit drama in a while, which probably doesn't help either now that everyone not A-list are struggling big time.

It makes me feel really bad for them.
And it just baffles me how things get to this point.

How do actors' prospects just dwindle to nothing if they were in such high demand? And then as nature does, it tries migrating to other opportunities leading to them moving into the theater world which takes opportunities from theater actors.

(Though from what I understand, there's a few or many actors who started in theater, moved into dramas, and continued to go back & forth between the two)

1

I think she's still female lead material; it just depends on the roles. Like wasn't she the lead in Red Swan?
An older woman was the female lead of K2.

The best part of Miss Day & Night was the older actress.

Dr Cha was lead by an older actress who was making a comeback after a few years.

Not to mention many of the older actress don't even necessarily *look* like they're that much older than their juniors.

I think people would be willing to watch dramas with older female leads as long as the stories are interesting and entertaining.

Its for producers to decide who is lead material and who isn't. As far as they are concerned she isn't. There is a reason for this massive dichotomy between A-list actors and the others exits. Back in the day people cribbed about why lesser known actors were ignored for 'popular' ones but its clear why it happened. Yoona and Suzy may not have talent but they have a legion of fans that would go to great lengths for them and are loyal. Additionally producers now look at Instagram followers and number of endorsements before hiring actors for projects so obviously the older actors without star power will be at disadvantage. As silly as it all seems it matters to those who invest money into making these dramas. Actors are after all only just products that are sold on the basis of their sales value. Now those associated with big acting agencies will benefit especially those in Namoo, BH and SOOP.

2

Agree --> "The best part of Miss Day & Night was the older actress."

I don't understand why if shows are already made, they aren't just aired. Don't dramas often air on broadcast stations as well as streaming sites? So if it can't air place, it can't air anywhere? There are so many empty spots.

I don't understand the business and money aspect at all.

I don't understand why streamers *have* to own the IP when they could just do distribution. Or a joint thing.

Something like that happened with Kingdom. The korean production company was mad/disappointed that they sold their IP or whatever to Netflix because then they couldn't do anything else with the property. When Extraordinary Attorney Woo came around, I don't remember if it was another production company or the same one, but they considered it a lesson learned and negotiated a new deal that kept the rights in their hands. The show was a success, everyone made money, and the show was later adapted to a webtoon.

I also don't understand why more actors can't get work. Even if an OTT wants certain actors, can't these thingd be negotiated? And what are stations doing during all this? How did they produce shows before streamers and OTT started investing?

Post Squid Game dramas were being made before anyone was willing to buy them so it didn’t take into consideration things like star power and plot. No channel will buy a drama that isn’t guaranteed to have either ratings or explosive overseas popularity. Which is why many dramas have been left on the shelf because they aren’t worth buying and now they’ve become expired productions that don’t match the current trend. More actors can’t get work because fewer dramas are being produced since there is less money to go around. For example if you had 100 billion won you could make 20 dramas but now you can only make 10 dramas because the per episode cost has gone up since overall salaries of actors has skyrocketed due to Netflix overpaying them. Now the whole industry is suffering because top actors refuse to reduce their salaries to pre Netflix levels.

Again, maybe they should take the risk because it can never be known what will resonate with audiences. Maybe one of those shelved dramas are a hit but it wasn't given a chance.

I don't understand about trends because even if something is somewhat "dated" can't it just be turned into a nostalgic piece? Or concept?

I can't give an example but there was a show months ago (starring one of the guys from Super Junior) and it was a flop. I saw a complaint/criticism that it felt old. I don't know what that means.

Also people say they want the kdramas of the past but then they *don't* want the feel of the kdramas of the past.

Squid Game was just lucky that the stars aligned. I don't understand the mindset of executives and producers who think genuine lightning in the bottle can be recreated just because money is thrown at it.

DNA Lover, Bad Memory Eraser and Serendipity's Embrace are all shelved dramas that were recently released to fill empty slots and they all flopped. At least Serendipity's Embrace is buoyed by CJH's Japanese popularity but the rest will all be forgotten and would better have been left on the shelf. Blackout is the only shelved drama that has managed to survive the ratings curse but it has no overseas popularity. Either way these dramas have now been sold at dirt cheap and it means the producers didn't make any money from it and its likely most crew members didn't even get paid properly. The actors might have also been underpaid since no profits were made. Its better to rely on big name celebs like SHK, JJH, GY, SYJ etc. who can deliver on popularity even if the drama is mediocre and flops. Jirisan got over 10% ratings despite being panned by critics and audiences alike. Star power matters and producers know that as long as they keep casting big name actors and throwing money into big budget productions they will eventually have another Squid Game or Moving or The Glory or Queen of Tears. Earlier B-list celebs still were relevant because the volume of dramas being made was that high but now they spend 10 months filming a 8 or 10 episode drama while before 16 episode dramas could be filmed in 3-4 months max. Most in demand actors are working back to back without rest because without producers don't want to risk spending all that money and ending up with nothing. LJH, PBY, Suzy, PEB, KGE, KTR etc have been filming non-stop since the last 2-3 years. Young rising stars like GYJ, Roh Yeonso, Noh Jungeui and MGY also have an endless stream of drama offers. Same for idols like Siwan, Lee Junho and Taecyeon who have been booked and busy since their military comebacks. The ones who don't have work are the stars of yesterday who don't have the talent to back up demand which is why scripts are not going their way. Even PSH filmed 2 dramas back to back after her marriage and pregnancy. Star power and ability to bring in endorsements are everything. PBG has been filming non-stop since his military return as well. IU works on both music and acting which is why she has big breaks but her supply of scripts is high. BWS recently said he is flooded with scripts which means the number of dramas being filmed is enough to keep actors employed for many years but the actors who have fallen out of relevance obviously will not get scripts anymore since their don't fit the trends. Even Ra Miran is booked and busy and she's older than KHN. Its also an actor problem and not entirely a production problem. Some actors are just not relevant enough to get lead roles anymore. Same with the dramas that aren't getting released. The actors aren't popular enough to spend money on and free channels like MBC, KBS and SBS don't even have enough money to begin with. TVN and JTBC are the only ones with deep pockets.

4

@mango I don't know what Serendipity's Embrace is but those other two shouldn't have even been made. Their premises were terrible and the execution was worse apparently.

And Blackout probably doesn't have more overseas popularity at least in part because people can't even find it.

And is overseas popularity the only metric for success now?

1

"B-list celebs still were relevant because the volume of dramas being made was that high but now they spend 10 months filming a 8 or 10 episode drama while before 16 episode dramas could be filmed in 3-4 months max."

How can 16 epidodes be filmed in 3-4 months?! How was that enough time?

I think Shin Mina said she filmed No Gain No Love over 5 months.

1

SE had CJH and KSH in the lead roles. It was only able to air because Resident Playbook got cancelled and they had to move dramas around and ended up with a hole in their Mon-Tue slot. Luckily CJH had just blown up in Japan and became a Hallyu star so overseas distribution was profitable. Yes overseas sales is everything because Korea is a tiny country with very few TV watchers. Earlier they depended on Japan then China and now after Netflix the US is their main market which they want validation from. SEA is too poor and doesn’t bring in enough money for sales but they suffice for fan meetings. Squid Game only started to get noticed after it broke #1 in the US. Overseas sales determine Hallyu popularity these days and like I said Instagram followers and engagement is a huge deal for getting projects.

All dramas are now pre produced earlier they live shoot and scripts were written to accommodate viewer feedback. The work hours laws also changed so isn’t allowed for people to work beyond certain hours anymore. Previously actors would film an episode even on the day of airing with only 2-3 hours available to the editing team to deliver a finished product. That’s just how things were back then. Obviously a lot has changed since then.

3

@britney Those were the days of live-shoot! Filming nonstop for weeks, having no time to sleep, no time for line rehearsal, no time to reshoot scenes. I remember one drama finale episode that wasn't finished editing, they sent in the first 30 minutes to air, and scrambled to edit and send the second half in time to air!!!!

0

@Mango really sad to hear about this uneven distribution of roles - some having too much on their plates and others forced to find work in other fields. honestly, the people making these casting decisions and choosing the scripts are not doing a great job. there are so many wonderful and capable actors and actresses in their 30's to 50's that just need the right script to shine again. these production heads and agents lack creative imagination and confidence. when creative decisions are made by business-minded people, the quality of the dramas suffer. How did something so trite and forgettable like DNA Lovers even get the green light in this competitive environment? I just shake my head. it's seriously sad because there are so many great older actors viewers would love to see again on the screen. and there are some really hotties such as Lee Dong-gun that are aging like fine wine and at their best right now.

1

@Ahjumma Siwon is from SM the biggest idol agency in Korea with a strong network throughout the entertainment world. SM idols loyal to the company are never out of work. Yoona probably staying with the agency for this reason. Expect Karina and Winter from Aespa to become major actresses in Kdrama in the next 3-4 years once they've made enough money from World Tours and such. This is not uneven it has always been this way but its more visible now. Earlier these A-list celebs considered it to be prestige to have a 'mysterious' image and not 'overspend' their image but with the short attention span of consumers it doesn't work anymore. Since A-list celebs have decided to work fulltime and working conditions have become more relaxed and OTTs are overpaying and drama lengths have reduced to just 8-12 episodes there is no reason for A-list celebs to hold back and hide anymore. Luxury fashion deals also require constant media exposure which is why you see so many older celebs opening Instagram and Twitter accounts. Executives were choosing B-list celebs because they had excess dramas to make and A-list celebs were not available but now things have changed. Someone like SHK doing back to back projects was unthinkable at one point or that KDW would ever return to dramas or that CMS and SKH would ever do dramas. Disney+ must have paid bucket loads to get these major movie stars away from films and into dramas. Since the A-list celebs aren't backing away from doing multiple projects it reduces the opportunities for everyone else in the market and like I said the cost per drama has gone up by a huge margin so much fewer dramas are being made than before and channels like KBS are suffering the most since they don't have the money to compete. TVN has deeper pockets so anyone who is relevant will choose TVN over MBC or other terrestrials. Which means all the celebs who can bring in investors and ratings don't want to work with smaller companies or channels that can't pay their massive fees. Without profits channels can't make dramas. Even weekenders are failing.

2

Squid game weren't just lucky for stars aligned. Director/writer couldn't film that drama for 13 years, because companies in Korea declined his script. But after Netflix interested in it, the script had potential enough for top actors like Gong Yoo and Lee Byun Hun to make a guest roles. And this drama was interesting enough for my parents to finish, who don't care about k-dramas and about hype shows at all.
At that time Netflix didn't have only Squid game: they aired Hellbound, Sweet home, All of us are dead, and these dramas were successful on international level as well. But after them weeker dramas aired, and from NF original dramas seems only The Glory got hype for that level.
I'm guessing, why so many dramas with weak script airing, like just watching Hierarchy I can't understand why Netflix decided to finance that drama. It's either salary, either writers in such small country like Korea just can't write so many good scripts in a short time, while all channels and OTT are hungry and fighting for every potential script.

1

I REALLY miss watching Lee Yuri leading day/weekend dramas. She's such a wonderful FL, feisty and charismatic. But her roles have stuck to the same age (late 20's-early 30's) while she has gotten older. So it's been weird watching her having to act like a girl when she's 40 or so. She needs roles that are more age appropriate so she can be allowed to act her age. Lee Yuri is really a joy to watch on the screen and it's a travesty to hear that roles have dried up for me.

Actresses over 40 have to be certain level of iconic to remain relevant. SHK, JJH, KTH and SYJ have a brand image that over powers their peers which is why they are still in high demand. JDY and KHS are even more impressive to be in such demand despite being in their 50s and still considered sexy by most. However I do believe women in 40s are in a more advantageous stage right now at least the ones who have a successful career like PMY, LBY, SMA and HJM who will never be without drama offers only thing is their male leads will continue to get younger as same/similar aged actors prefer to do male-centric dramas with younger female leads. Its the 20s that has the least number of credible stars and the industry is worried about the ongoing drought. Celebs in their 30s are the most privileged and in-demand right now with an endless supply of roles and opportunities. Global fashion brands are also mostly targeting actors in that age bracket with a few exceptions like the classic beauties LYA and KHA. Roles haven't dried up per se, they've gotten more refined and only the best of the best are being preferred.

I don't know who all these abbreviations are.

And are there THAT many "A List" actors that projects can't be shared amongst others. Lovely Runner was rejected by many "A list" actors apparently before it got to the lead actor.

If producers would just give things chance, it could work.

Like there's no potential for new A list actors to emerge.

I said it before but I'll say it again: I feel so bad for these actors. What are they supposed to even do with themselves if the thing they've trained for or done for years has kinda turned its back on them?

Hello again.

I finished 2 extensive presentations this week, one on korean animals in folklore and one on devils and monsters of Estonia & Korea. If I have a bit of time after all the exhibition deadlines pass, I will try and share some of it here

Tomorrow is the big anime fest where I will give a lecture. and sunday I am picking up my stuff from the previous exhibition.

yesterday we had a visitor form Estonian Embassy in Seoul and it was so interesting: she talked about trade relations and which companies are cooperating between the 2 countries and our Eurovision representative Puuluup will have 3 concerts today and tomorrow in Estonian Business Hub I . We also talked a bit about the inequality and treatment of women.

turns out there are way more korean groups coming than I thought but you barely notice in the city. They usually only got time for a dinner and some introduction.

I hope they take on longer trips in the future.

hmm, I dont have much amusing library stuff to share but perhaps something will turn up today.

Happy Friday, Beanies! Joke of the week goes to domestic LYN's fans begging him to start filming another drama asap so they can rest a bit from his daily updates as a singer lol. I mean, they aren't wrong – man owned media this week, having 2 music show appearances with 4 performances in total on Sunday alone. His October schedule is even worse, btw, and that's without any TSOPG promo events listed so far – there will be some, right?

We open with a bang – literally! - from OUR SONG S6 big finale. Hilariously, just a day prior I saw a complaint (in my native language which took me out, ngl) on sns that LYN's voice is criminally wasted on vanilla pop songs lately and he should go back to his metal roots. Man must've felt that disturbance in the force, because he timely covered Zheng Jun's rock classic from 90s “Naked” together with his bro Da Zhangwei, and oh my lower chakras that was a freaking nuclear blast of the stage! First of all, his voice! I haven't heard him going this sexily smokey in what felt like centuries, even wondered if this kind of sound possible anymore... Short answer is hell yeah – he even screamed to disintegrate all remaining doubts! And overall was vibing to his metalhead heart's content, bouncing around and hyping the crowd into horny insanity. Somehow no guitars were broken in process (I assume fangirls throwing their lingerie on stage is not a thing in China – at least at TV. shame). In fact, I'm shocked this stage happened at all – not only the song is pretty explicit (one strategically removed F-bomb, we'll remember ya!), but they presented it exactly how it is – hot and wild. ”My love is naaaked, you make me going craaazy!”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5blumU7vV0g

Studio fancam – at this point I feel like begging for mercy but he clearly has none:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPg1HuNaeuY

Excuse me for a sec – need to dump a bucket of ice on myself to start thinking rationally again – OK, we're good to continue now. Of course, his second duo had to be NOTHING like the first – mood whiplash is the name of the game here))) To hardly anyone's surprise, his and Malaysian star Shila Amzah's soulful take of Liang Fan's sentimental ballad “That girl, A Chu” was the most popular stage of the night – I knew that local public would be more into romantic ballad about long lost first love than smutty rock, but 1M likes in an hour, damn! Then again, vocals – the harmonies! - were absolutely fabulous. It's rare for him to not need holding back at least a bit to not overpower his partner, esp lady, but here we've got two vocalists with lungs made of the same brand of mithril. Saved him the energy to bring out acting chops – that longing stare at the end!

Second part of the night was dedicated to MELODY JOURNEY show – I've told yall briefly about its format, but for those who forgot/missed: it's a fresh concept including a bunch of songwriters and singers, where former present their fresh unclaimed demos and latter compete with each other to perform track(s) they liked and even potentially record them if result proves to be successful. It's a little complicated to make the whole thing more engaging to viewers – there is a physical race to “order” the song, but also “love match” system with mutual pitches from composers to singers and then back. End result is that 1 track may get performed by a few artists – or not picked up by anyone. Not to mention there's MORE singers than songs... It's on YT subbed and I quite liked the creative chaos vibe of it.

Yuning being, well, himself managed to charm his way into grabbing two songs (in this episode – 2 more in next). Gotta say, his taste is impeccable – I can see how he got stuck with not enough music to fill his album with such a perfectionism in selecting demos. Hope CICADA producers already presented him better choices for OST, because now I fully believe he'd rather not sing one at all than pick a random track First song is uplifting rock ballad “Do you dare?” and I'm so floored that we've got not one, but two rocker LYN stages in one evening! I do think they should've get him more genre-fitting clothes – always pack a leather jacket for fashion emergency! - because visuals and sound clearly clash here. But whatever – his voice!

Just a few days ago I heard/saw that performance for Melody Journey. Youtube randomly showed it to me.
I thought that was a beautiful song.
I understand LYN decided to grab it.

I wouldn't mind if they recorded that song as a duet. Even better if I could listen to it in Spotify XD

And yes, I have confidence in LYN's script choices :)

1

@isagc well, he has a brilliant opportunity to do just that with his supposedly soon-to-be-released collab EP. We'll see)))

I guess I should have that confidence too... but I want to be reassured one more time first^^

1

Exceptional this week, Gikata. This is a great write up. Thank you. Loved the hard metal, loved the duet (quite the songstress, little bit of Ella F there [will forgive the ratty fedora]), but most of all loved the new song and the arrangement. LYN shined there, obviously loved that song.

Also, so much better production here on Our Song than last weeks inept Music Awards show. (Still miffed over that ugly production.) And Our Song has a great crew of musicians to work with -- terrific drummer.

My pleasure)))

Yes, her voice is fantastic. Now everyone wants them to do an OST together, which I'm totally in for. Not just any drama would've been able to afford that tho...

Ratty fedora somehow gave many people impression that he's fashionable))) For the sake of man's already troubled reputation I won't argue with this ridiculous claim further. Or give ANY comments regarding even more ratty cardigan he was spotted in yesterday...

I always liked OUR SONG arrangements, even back then in S1 the band(s) show worked with did a consistently fine job no matter the genre. Maybe that's the problem - they snatched all good musicians for themselves, leaving none for WMA^^

I've been thinking lately (always fatal words) ...

My very first great streaming watch was the Amazon series MOZART IN THE JUNGLE (2014). For anyone who hasn't seen this, it's truly unique, full of heart, and the music is so important it's a character.

Some smart cdrama screenwriter should be creating a similar series using the cdrama studio orchestra/band (like Hengdian World Studios) as the basis for the characters and the story. You could then bring in a sub-storyline like LYN/Hao Du as a breakout star of a drama (can't dub him because his voice is unique). You get the idea. If you watch MOZART, you'll see the possibilities.

Back in the day, many Hollywood studios had their own orchestras. So, it's not fanciful in modern times where these fabulous cdrama productions have great scores and sometimes exceptional songs that are a story in themselves.

1

@cliosservant1846 Amazon series?! *cringes in LOTR fan* That's a lot to digest even by the idea alone)))

Somehow I have no idea how musical - specifically cinema musical - genre fares in c-ent. I think I spotted few stage plays/operas turned web-movies on YT, but that's not quite the same thing and those seem to focus more on traditional c-theater, idk if modern counterparts to that even exist. Would've love for someone more informed to provide a needed context here.

Hengdian orchestra/band sounds like a cool idea tho. Maybe costume drama stars that also happen to be singers can unite and make it a thing for real. I do know that some hit dramas held their own concerts with cast performing OSTs and dance numbers etc - MYSTERIOUS LOTUS CASEBOOK, to name one, and it was a raging success iirc. This reminds me that it's been a hot minute since Yuning performed with any of his costars - I think last time was him and longtime friend Joseph Zeng on NYE gala nearly a year ago:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aanhGgVpgEs

And a short acapella of their duo OST "Pursuit" from HEROES (2022) feat their another costar Meng Ziyi clapping along:
https://youtu.be/_gBp-OFnjJQ?si=DMmspOX0MStU8cyw&t=65

That's for stage performances, ofc - he did a duo OST with his female costar for this year's HEROES, but it hasn't gotten live version yet, sadly. Probably no such luck this year at all, maybe next one will be more fruitful...

1

Really, check out MOZART. It's totally not what I expected, and I loved it to pieces.

Acapella, and on key. Atta boys.

Next track was also all rage hype-wise – trending crazily even after just a preview release lmao. I can see why – it's more of a standard ballad, but not quite at the same time, it just... soars, both thanks to music and his vocals. Title is “This (sky) blue”, composed by Zhou Fujian whom he worked with multiple times before – on “Fall in love” and few game/anime OSTs. Still unclear whether any of these will be recorded in the future at least this one must be pretty secure given composer's delight with the result, but I really hope Yuning snatches both – if not for his very next album, then the one afterwards. Even show's AI kept insisting this is a hit in the making!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG8sjUc8ZuI

Studio fancam – it's cute how he claimed he couldn't sing it very well and needs more practice. Like I get it, the song IS hard, but come on, someone's totally being coquettish here)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mv3FoCgQFA

Lyrics again – so fitting the season!
https://x.com/Just_Lice0304/status/1840631387172250007

Upd.: I think he has no option to NOT record it now – it's already out there as BGM for tons of unrelated videos, including on CCTV tourism and culture official account (huge fans of his and regular “customers”). Might as well just accept the fact and be fast at securing them royalties!^^

Bonus: making of WMA photoshoot last week – on behalf of hand fetishists crowd, thank you!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeDJVFcSjSQ

Bonus2: remember that smexy photoshoot last week? Well, if you wanna preserve fond memories of its hot vibe, don't watch the making below lol. Yep, that's more like LYN I know – buttoning up back (crookedly lmao) right away and screeching “enough!” once he doesn't want to take any more pics. I swear, this man calls his bathroom mirror a pervert for seeing too much!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9GUKNCS7Jk

Bonus3: vlog of Zhang Bichen's concert. Bwahaha, the repeated “not nervous”)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVw-ZGUe5SY

P.S. Good news: he's been resting... somewhat. Went to amusement park, where happily posed for fans AND muggles who wanted a selfie with handsome giant, and music festival, where, shockingly, didn't sing (dude, jumping UP so Penny Tai who was performing could notice you wasn't very considerate to other, normal sized humans around lmao). Still brought a filming crew with him, but hey, baby steps)))

P.P.S. Thought we're done with OUR SONG since their finale aired, but apparently they decided to do another live-air gala this Sunday! Yuning, ofc, will be attending and performing. Ain't no rest for the wicked, huh? I mean myself and his other overworked fans)))

Everyone is, it's THAT good. "Do you dare?" was nice too, but if he doesn't record this one, I'll join the riots!

While watching the episode I've got an impression that songwriter wanted Yuning to sing it from the start - perhaps even composed with him in mind. Vocal range aside, song's emotional depth and inspirational vibe has him written all over it.

As much as his mere existence tends to give me indecent inconvenient temperature jumps on a regular basis, it haven't gotten this bad for a while, I swear! Certainly not the entire month+ I was sick not so long ago))) So nothing to worry about - I hate ice with my all cells and very rarely turn to it for calming effect.

But him going full rock out of nowhere was a RUDE overkill move. And what a song choice - that beat, those lyrics! If I was still in high school I'd totally add it to my collection of unholy phone ringtones to annoy everyone around with (already consisting Warrant's "Cherry pie" and Def Leppard's "Pour some sugar on me"). My hopeless glam metal... heart was NOT prepared for any of that and suffered a huge damage both physically and emotionally. Hope he'll do it again^^

You're certainly the lucky one here - he's got no shortage of ballads. Rock, in other hand... oh well, even such crumbs are hella delicious!

Now that Spice Up Our Love is over, I'm really feeling the loss of NGNL.

Also, Spice Up Our Love (the fake novel, not the two episode drama) reminds me a LOT of I Can't Get Enough of You, a webnovel that's also been adapted into a webcomic. There's an overarching story and a romance between a chaebol boss and his employee, but also just a ton of smutty scenes. Not to mention a childhood connection and a vengeful employee. But I'm also sure that stories like this are a dime a dozen on Naver!

Speaking of webcomics, Lee Hye has a new webcomic up and I am super excited. I am also still following the Korean release of Obsidian Bride, which is insisting on dragging out a potential love triangle and confusing readers about who the ML is (sigh). And Operation True Love remains on hiatus without a return date to be seen. There's a new webcomic that sort of has the same vibe, In Between, that I'm enjoying but I'm already caught up to the English translation and can't find translated newer episodes. Daily Jojo updates on Tuesdays and Fridays, so I'll check out the Kr release of that this morning (less than an hour now). I mainly follow it to see the S1 couple that I love, but I haven't seen them yet this season.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

Long time no see! I haven’t seen my home as much as usual these past two weeks, and well, home is where the Dramabeans laptop is.🫡

During the first week all our windows, shutters and blinds got replaced and this week my parents have been busy painting, cleaning and finally putting things back in their rightful place. While they tackled room by room, I spent a couple days in work formation away from all the dirt and noise.👷👷

The escape to work was convenient, but once I returned home chaos and exhaustion would reign. I could not reach or even find my stuff underneath all the old blankets that served as protection during the renovation, so my October schedule is still missing!🤭

Tomorrow I am having my regular city meet-up with my friends for another escape from home. As much as I want to see my friends, I cannot help but yearn for a cozy weekend binge on my sofa. Fortunately I have some time off work coming up!😴

I am knitting again, which at this time, for me, is improving productivity.
As almost always I have decided that what I need is something that can only be put together from three or four different patterns, and so I am right now making a chain (fair isle) of roses, the same rose turned this way and that and polstered with a few less or extra stitches so the whole thing looks more rose bed-ish. I have a an incredibly bad working memory, and so, I count, and count, and count, ... Why did I decide I needed these roses?
Anyways, this too will pass.

Why did I decide I needed these roses?

😂 I just finished embroidering a dish towel with a floral pattern that was far too elaborate and too much work for its humble purpose because I needed to stitch *those particular flowers, right now,* to the point of not caring about the substrate. Sometimes it's all about the process, not the product.

I don't knit so I'm having trouble imagining what your roses look like - maybe next time you do one of your craft fanwall posts?

I was watching a reaction video about the drama Happiness and it made think about korean zombie movies and shows. Over recent years, people keep saying how koreans do the zombie genre so well and maybe it's just me but I don't get how they take such a novel approach. Zombie stories are almost always about stories of survival and that's my takeaway (I don't think on it too deep). Now, I'm not much of zombie or horror watcher but I've seen The Walking Dead and 28 Days Later (though I don't remember much of the latter) and I saw the same or similar beats play out as in Train to Busan or All of Us are Dead.

In this video https://youtu.be/jQ9KsATrlvc?si=F5Ue9YR0OgKv0DGQ
The youtuber says korean zombie stories seem to have a different emphasis and appeal because of the culture. The language difference, the default collectivism.

This also reminded me of @welh 's comment weeks ago about how the western movie making world was entranced by korean movies but it was like chefs trying to recreate foods and missing that *something*.

Sometimes I feel that way about how dramas are preceived nowadays. It all seems the same to me but the formulas are out of whack for others.

I'm glad you say that so now I don't feel so alone haha.

I think in zombie movies and shows, the same types of people are always gonna end up being the "hateable" people and they are the cowardly selfish people.

Even in the individualistic Western world, I think it's fair to say people know they *should* cooperate and have some levels of empathy & compassion in a disaster situation. I don't get why that aspect would be different in a korean movie vs a western one.

I've read korean webtoons that took place during a zombie outbreak and it's that same "collectivism" until it becomes "us vs them".

I think that was in Happiness too. There was a class divide even in the middle of that situation.

I've never seen Zombie Detective.

I was really disappointed in the ending episode (actually the last two episodes) of No Gain No Love, mainly because I was enjoying the rom-com a great deal, and the writer up to that point had been deft at using tropes but slightly subverting them; but then got heavy handed in the sentimental messaging and the FL’s “growth” at the end, totally neglected the story of the ML— not to mention the entire main couples romance—until an extremely unsatisfying “happy” resolution. I was NOT happy. In fact the ending of this show ranks among my most disappointing ever.

When I say “most disappointing” here I mean a drama that up until the ending, I really liked, and then after the ending, felt totally let down about the whole production. We’ve talked a lot about bad endings here, but there are some endings that are bad, but for bad dramas (like Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol, or Bad Memory Eraser recently—it was a terrible ending, but the drama itself was terrible).

There are other endings that end unhappily, and become notorious for their endings— but since the whole drama was trending that way, while the endings were widely disliked, (and I also disliked them) they weren’t deeply disappointing to me since I already knew what was coming (Heartbeat, 25-21).

But I was wondering for anyone willing to respond what your most disappointing ending was, with the criteria that you really liked the drama up until the ending, and then were “What the..?” and your whole opinion of the show soured after the last episode. I want to be sure to prepare myself if I ever watch them!

Also, Let Me be Your Knight, Doctor Cha, and Suspicious Partner. Although, Suspicious Partner had steadily been falling off of the rails in the second half so maybe it shouldn't count. Even A Business Proposal had a pretty unsatisfying ending that made me less gung-ho about the rest of it.

@vienibenmio I understand. I was very much used to lukewarm endings in 2005-2010, and this show felt very old-fashioned, that is probably why I didn't feel let down.

1

Hmmm, none of those endings ruined the shows for me as a whole.

Though I can never watch the ending of Heartbeat again haha.

Suspicious Partner. I don't know what would be unsatisfying about it. All the couples are together. Everyone has a job. The old man continues ruining meetings by going on tangents haha

I enjoyed Kiss Sixth Sense almost all the way to the end, but it went in a direction that was both logical (for characters and plot) and extremely annoying in the last two episodes. I considered stopping after ep. 10/12 and I'd have been much happier with it overall if I had. It's easy enough to guess the plot bits you'd miss.

The comparison of NGNL to Business Proposal is apt. It didn't make me dislike that whole show in retrospect, but I certainly wouldn't ever watch the final episode again. It ends just fine at 11/12.

May I Help You? had a lot going for it until the last two episodes decided needless violence and tragedy would spice up our love for it.

Jealousy Incarnate had plenty of flaws and plenty to be irked at, but also some great secondary characters and relationship dynamics and an excellent performance from Jo Jung-suk. I mostly enjoyed it until the last episode saw the FL give up everything she'd struggled to achieve for no good reason I could see except to support her man. 😒 That one made me want to throw things, but not to wish I hadn't watched the show.

Wedding Impossible's damp squib ending made everything that had gone before look like a dud, too.

Sometimes (often) a cruddy ending will taint a whole drama for me, but strangely I didn’t feel that way about May I Help You. I wish I could figure out the magic thing it did to be less disappointing for me (or more likely the magic state of mind I was in not to be disappointed!) but I’ve never been able to figure out why I still like that drama even though its last quarter or so wasn’t nearly as good.

I think none of these except Business Proposal fit my own personal disappointment criteria, because I didn't love them that much to begin with, although I didn't think Business Proposal's ending was totally disastrous--just undermined by a strange separation trope. But is there a timeline jump/separation trope that ever is satisfying?

Two time travel shows that I really liked up to the end had hugely disappointing endings for me--Signal, partly because I could never figure out whether the ending indicated another alternative time line, or was left open for a sequel that never happened, but apparently now will in an alternate time line.

And then one where I apparently was the only person in the world watching who found this upsetting--Twinkling Watermelon, where the "happy ending" of the changed timeline undermined the lesson the ML was supposed to learn and instead taught that by going back in time you can change things in a way that will render meaningless every memory you have of your childhood and lead your family to institutionalize you as delusional. Of course, I guess that could have been the lesson it wanted to teach--don't go back in time or watch a show that features time travel. in which case I probably should have appreciated the ending.

You're definitely not the only person who found that aspect of TW's ending frustrating and counter to the rest of the show's messages, implicit and explicit.

Lovely Runner could also have gone a different and arguably more satisfying way in handling the FL's disability, but with that one it was clear long before the end that it wouldn't and thus doesn't fall in the "loved until I didn't" category for me.

That would be Because This is Our First Life for me. I watched it very early on in my drama-watching journey and it was the first time I’d had an ending disappoint me that much. I have a very distinct memory of watching one of the final episodes early on a Saturday morning and then trying to make waffles with my husband but it took me forever because I kept forgetting what I was doing - I was so thrown off by what I had just watched. The very very end of that drama was not so bad as the last few episodes, but it still lives as one of my biggest disappointments.

Because I'm missing No Gain No Love, I've been rewatching it and I still enjoy even though I know how it ends. Rewatching made me think about when I've rewatched other dramas. From what I remember, I don't tend to change my feelings when I rewatch a drama; if I thought it was okay during the initial viewing, that's usually my take and it doesn't change. However, my outlook or appreciation maybe affected by fanvids or reaction videos.

For example, I didn't like Hwayugi/A Korean Odyssey much. I especially didn't like the ending (a little tidbit: that was the first show I commented about on here YEARS after it aired and I was unregistered so whatever comments I made are just lost in the sea of comments for that show haha)

Anyhoo, I didn't like the show much, it was alright to me, but once saw fanvids for it, specifically the videos for Son O Gong, I gained a new appreciation for it and rewatched it focusing on his character rather than the romance. I ended up liking it much more when I think about the parts rather than the whole.

Similarly, I felt that way with Happiness and Sh**ting Stars. The shows were whatever but the fanvids and edits ended up making me interested in the shows more. But when I actually watch the show, my feelings are generally the same haha

I wonder how other people feel when they rewatch shows years later. Like if you disliked Kokdu: Season of Deity in the past, can you like it in the future?

Honestly, I only consider a drama in my favorites list if I have the urge to rewatch it. There are dramas I enjoy but have no desire to revisit, but then there are dramas I just can't let go of, and the latter is how I define my favorites list. My top favorites are the ones where I rewatched episodes in between new episodes (No Gain No Love has now earned that honor, too).

I do think that rewatching CLOY years later made me feel better about the ending.

There are so many shows and dramas airing that I doubtly rewatch drama I didn't like in a closest future. I rewatched drama I liked, Fight for my way, and it got more impression on me in a second time. In the first time it was light rom com drama I liked, but on the second time I saw more depth. I still remember the scene when Park Seo Joon's character saw his father tried to please his drunk boss, while that boss rudely spoke with him. Just how heartbreaking it was. On the first time I didn't play much attention to it, but on rewatch this scene made impression on me, as many others scenes and topics writer wrote. I guess when I rewatch it on a third time I can see something else in that drama.
