[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Flickering lights
by Dramaddictally
Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.
Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.
There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.
And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.
This week’s treasure:
Flickering lights
Your mission:
Track down any and all scenes where the lights flicker to mimic, express, or reflect a character’s emotional state or inner thoughts. We saw it in the latest episode of No Gain No Love and we’ve certainly seen it (somewhere!) before.
Thanks @Britney for this treasure hunt idea!

The ones I remember the most are the heart lights I first saw in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and Strong Woman Do Bong Soo. I know those were used in other dramas but I can't remember the rest at this time.

The flickering light in Extraordinary Attorney Woo - the hallway outside the apartment when they first kiss. Beautifully shot and the flickering light was the perfect creative emphasis on that scene.

This!!! It was gorgeous!!! I usually have trouble with these treasure hunts but the flickering lights scene in Attorney Woo is one I'll never forget. It was so beautifully filmed!!! I wish we could interview the screenwriter and director and hear how they came up with this scene.

Not exactly flickering lights but in Hometown Cha-cha-cha had a scene where the lights go off in the FL's house and as she puts on the shoes ML got for her, the lights come on - very sweet moment. Lights were a bit of a motif in the show - ML getting a street light repaired for her, finding her with a flashlight when she's scared, etc.

Does this count as a trope? Either way, it's something that I think I like haha

Definitely AoS2.
It goes beyond the use as sympathetic background to reflect the inner emotional landscape of characters, it's practically a character in the story & key plot device at one point.
Whether it is On, Off, Flickering will determine if our heroine gets recognised as the true successor of her sect, her priestess powers affirmed, and if she gets her marriage secured or annulled by the Ice-stone hero & true love.
Of course, the wattage of that flaky magic lamp is also a pretty good indicator & running commentary of the ups and downs of their rocky path to true love

Joo Won's (Ryu Seung Ryong)
wife and then daughter Hui-soo (Go Youn-jung) waving their hands to switch on the light which gets switched-off while he is bending down to wear his shoes before going out is a very memorable part of Moving.
