Sohn Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook

  • A new sageuk called Scandal is in the works – potentially under Netflix – with Sohn Ye-jin (Thirty-Nine) and Ji Chang-wook (Queen Woo) in talks to play leading roles. The series will be a remake of the acclaimed 2003 film Untold Scandal (starring Lee Mi-sook and Jeon Do-yeon), which is itself an adaptation of the French novel Dangerous Liaisons re-imagined in a Joseon era. With filmmaker Jung Ji-woo (Somebody, Tune in for Love) attached to direct, production is aiming to start filming in March. [Newsen, YTN]

  • Also set in Joseon times, KBS is preparing a new fantasy rom-com titled Dear Bandit (roughly translated). Reportedly headlined by Nam Ji-hyun (Good Partner) and Moon Sang-min (Cinderella at 2AM), the story follows our Robin Hood-like heroine and prince pair as body-swap shenanigans paint the way for love. [Star News]
  • Back in the present, the office rom-com Let’s Go to the Moon (roughly translated) is busy with casting as well, courting Ra Mi-ran (Jeongnyeon – The Star is Born), Lee Sun-bin (Boyhood), Kim Young-dae (No Gain No Love) and Jo Ah-ram (The Auditors) to star as our story’s everyday salary people enslaved living the corporate life. [JTBC (1), (2), Newsen]

Clockwise: Ra Mi-ran, Lee Sun-bin, Jo Ah-ram, Kim Young-dae

  • Choi Min-soo (Numbers) has confirmed casting for MBC’s upcoming Motel California, playing the romanticist motel owner and dad to Lee Se-young (What Comes After Love). Expected to broadcast early next year, the novel adaptation also stars Na In-woo (Marry My Husband) and has production led by PD Kim Hyung-min and writer Lee Seo-yoon (365 – Repeat the Year). [MBC]
  • Lee Joo-myung (Like Flowers in Sand) has been added to the melo romance My Youth (working title), joining Song Joong-ki (Reborn Rich) and Chun Woo-hee (The Atypical Family) in the cast lineup. Helmed by PD Lee Sang-yub (Yumi’s Cells) and scripts by Park Shi-hyun (Run On), the series is planning to release in 2025. [JTBC]
  • In the meantime, KBS’s Face Me will soon be on our screens in just one more week, showcasing leads Lee Min-ki (Crash), Han Ji-hyun (Spice Up Our Love), Lee Yi-kyung (Marry My Husband), and Jeon Bae-soo (Dear Hyeri) in new character posters. The medical crime-mystery premieres on November 6 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot. [Sports Donga]

#1. Ji Changwook has been working nonstop, for which I am grateful because I will always have something to anticipate. I hope he has enough rest though.

His projects are not always to everyone's taste, but he always delivers. His acting ability has been refined through time and now it's sheer joy for me to watch him on screen.

I can tell you one thing, @tccolb, you've sold me on the 2003 movie Untold Scandal simply by putting the words "Dangerous Liaisons" and Lee Mi-sook next to one another. Thanks for the intel (I see it's on all the streaming sites)!!!

If Scandal is a Netflix Original, I wonder how risqué the remake will be. Also interesting that Untold Scandal lists Lee Mi-sook before Jeon Do-yeon but leaves out Bae Yong-joon.

Kim Young-dae never needs to worry about being unemployed.

I'll be tuning in for My Youth. Love Song Joong-ki and Chun Woo-hee.

I think Lee Mi-sook did have first billing as she's listed first on the movie poster and then Jeon Do-yeon second. Bae Yong-joon is third and I prob should have included him, but I wanted to keep the list short, hehe 😅

In my opinion, Jeon Do-yeon's film career truly took off four years later with "Secret Sunshine," where she became the first and only K-actress to win a major award (Best Actress) at the Cannes Festival. While she had already established herself as a leading lady, "Secret Sunshine" elevated her to the pinnacle of her career.
Bae Yong-joon was very popular in dramaland. He had to earn his place in Chungmuro and "Untold Scandal" was his 3rd movie.

BTW, Son Ye-jin is apparently playing Lee Mi-sook’s role. The whole Dangerous Liaison - Scandal franchise is just not my cup of tea, including the most recent one with Jang Dong-gun, Cecilia Cheung and Zhang Ziyi.

Lee Yi-kyung’s poster says “multi face”… which means there’s about a 90% chance he turns out to be the bad guy, right?

There are some star-studded dramas in the works! I love how much there always is to look forward to in dramaland!

Dear Bandit maybe my first Moon Sang Min drama that I will watch after Under the Queen's Umbrella. Its because of Nam Ji Hyun and I love her in 100 Days My Prince. I love both her and Doh Kyung Soo ofcourse since they had great chemistry. Hopefully her new drama is good and can have a similar charm as 100 Days.

One difference for Nam Ji-hyun from acting with Do Kyung-so in tvN’s 100 DAYS MY PRINCE (2018) (Viki US) (I loved it.) and with Moon Sang-min in BANDIT is that with D.O. she (at 5’5”) could almost look him in the eye (D.O. height 5’8”). With MSM (at 6’3”) she will be looking up a lot lol.

Nam Ji-hyun is used to looking up to tall actors: Seo In-guk (Shopping King Louie), Ji Chang-wook (Suspicious Partner), Kang Hoon (Little Women), Park Hyung-sik (What Happens to My Family?). Do Kyung-soo is the exception.

In CINDERELLA AT 2AM the height difference between leads was obvious with FL Shin Hyun-bin at 5’6”. Whoever was responsible for MSM’s wardrobe in CINDERELLA did an excellent job. He looked great in suits. I am sure he will look excellent again in hanbok.

Motel California, My youth, Lets go to the moon all sound promising, The body swap sageuk needs further investigations, if its comedy it’s a yes if it has a Forbidden love dark themes mixed with comedy then it’s a clear no. 2025 could be a good year as some looooooong awaited dramas are due out.

2, 3 and 4) I'm not really fan of the main male actors...

5) I like this casting.

1 - whoa, heard the movie was pretty spicy but after watching at least two different adaptations of DANGEROUS LIASONS I never felt the urge to try it as well. Guess Netflix is planning to go all out with this one too. Who's gonna play Merteuil tho - I assume SYJ is in talks for Tourvel's part? Female antagonist's role is a deal breaker here.

2 - body swapping sageuk is a very weird hottest drama topic for 2025, but I guess world has become insane enough for it to fit just right.

1 - At least any sex or nudity in the remake won't come as a surprise since we already know what to expect from the film, and neither Son Ye-jin or Ji Chang-wook are new to these scenes after filming April Snow, which also starred Bae Yong-joon, and Queen Woo.

Late Ancien Regime France was so different from Joseon that I do not see how this adaptation of DANGEROUS LIASONS could really work. The story has been reset in different places and times before, but it is not suitable for every setting and time.

As a film adaptation, the earlier sage ik movie version with LMS, JDY and BYJ is not bad but the story is simply not my cup of tea.

ICYMI, Colin Firth did this too early in his career together with Annette Bening and Meg Tilly. He’s not keen to talk about that movie - but people remember that one due to his relationship with Meg Tilly afterward. I watched Valmont (the movie name) for Meg Tilly because I like her in

Kudos for trying definitely. Maybe she will surprise us!! 😂 Anyway it would be a better fit than playing the innocent one at her age. That seemed more off.

2

You’d be surprised. SYJ played seductress many a times during her movie career earlier though mostly as comedies, such as My Wife Got Married as a wife opting for bigamy and Art of Seduction who charms all the men around her. I watched all of them in those years - at a time when kdrama wasn’t a thing for me.

3

@epyc2010 Now I'm hyped!! 😂 I truly hope she accepts it then. I would like to see her and JCW play off each other.

1

@epyc2010 it's not the seduction part I'm unsure about, but the utter moral depravity of that character. Did she ever play a villain?

2

SYJ is one of the rare ones who has been in lead roles since her debut. As such, I don’t recall her ever having acted in a villain role. But I could see her pulling it off with her cheeky streak. It might signal her pivoting to a different acting path which is probably a good thing in the long term for her career.

No. 1 (Maybe Netflix’s) SCANDAL. Even though my man Ji Chang-wook is 37 (and still looking great) is it an actor’s right of passage in SK to act in a “Dangerous Liaisons” remake? SCANDAL will be a pass for me.

Favorite Wo Do-hwan (appearing soon on Nov. 8 in (not maybe) Netflix’s MR. PLANKTON) did his bit in 2018 by appearing in MBC’s TEMPTED/THE GREAT SEDUCER (still available at Viki US). I didn’t watch at the time because I didn’t think TEMPTED/THE GREAT SEDUCER was a good fit for him after his great performance in 2017 KBS’s MAD DOG (also still available at Viki US). TEMPTED/THE GREAT SEDUCER had a average nationwide Nielsen rating of 2.2%. Now that rating was fairly awful back then but probably would be considered ok today.

No. 2. KBS’s DEAR BANDIT. Noona romance? I am one of the faithful few here who enjoyed Moon Sang-min’s recent performance in Channel A’s CINDERELLA AT 2AM. This will be a maybe. Body swapping 6’3” MSM with 5’5” Nam Ji-hyun will be interesting say the least.

No. 3. MBC’s MOTEL CALIFORNIA. Choi Min-soo. Enough said. I will be there. The plot line has become rather standard.
Note. Based on the 2019 novel “Home, Bitter Home” by Shim Yoon Seo. After a cursory search I can’t find an english translation.

Netflix stated that SCANDAL is under consideration but the project has not been green lit for pre-production. The 2003 Korean movie was controversial (it received an Unrated rating instead of R). It did draw 3.5 million viewers. It is assumed that the Netflix version would be R rated.

The scripts to JCW and SYJ may be a trial balloon media play to gauge public reaction. SYJ's vocal fans are against her doing such a racy project. But for the entire year, Korean actresses have lamented the lack of script offers especially for those in their 40s. Sometimes, an actor has to do something different in order to keep relevant like SHK did for THE GLORY series.

Which is interesting because Song Hye-kyo was the only actress in The Glory who didn't have to film any racy scenes, while all the rest of the actresses did (Lim Ji-yeon, Cha Joo-young, Kim Hieora).

I won't be surprised if she turns it down. She has a solid standing in Chungmuro and Dramaland. She is currently shooting a movie directed by Park Chan-wook, and that's huge.

Some actors have specific contract clauses that limit situations involving nudity and related content. Based on some of her earlier films, Son Ye-jin doesn't seem to have such a limitation.
I'm with her fans, though. She doesn't need this drama.

Son Ye Jin's the one to decide of she need that drama or not. I can't understand fans, who demanding for actors what they want, and ignoring what actors themselves want.

1

The only one person who saw the script and knows if this is good or bad drama are Son Ye Jin. And yet, fans already demanding for her if she need that drama or not, just because of nudity scenes, not asking if Son Ye Jin herself against it or okay with it.

1. Dangerous Liaisons in Joseon. Hmm, seems legit. ✅

2. A Joseon Robinhood in a rom-com caught in a body swap!? Isn't there a bit too much happening here. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Like someone dropped the scripts for four different dramas but couldn't put them back together again so they put them in a blender. 😂

3. Office rom-com!? Now that is a Business Proposal to which I must say "pass". 🙅‍♀️ Thanks but no thanks. 🚫

4. Romanticist motel owner!? So will he write his daughter's lovestory. Does Na In-woo have a little blue heart on him again. Will we get the reveal of the 💙 in another shower scene. Hmm, so many interesting questions. Hope the drama is half as entertaining.

5. A melo romance, if done well, can really tug the heartstrings. Also the OTP can really deliver in this genre. An angst afflicted lovelorn Song Joong-ki is a good look. 🆗️

6. Interesting, how everyone has the same picture except Lee Min-ki in the two sets of posters. 🤔 So which is his secret face and which is his true face.
