[Drama Chat] Pick your secondary character spin-off drama

Between our two recent spin-off dramas (Spice Up Our Love and Dongjae the Good or the Bastard), I started thinking: a) I actually like this trend; and b) what a plethora of options to choose from and dream over!

So, this chat is really just an open space to think about all the possibilities. Remember that secondary love line that you just couldn’t get enough of (what about Love is for Suckers and Call it Love?) — those are great places to start. Or what about that side character who stole the drama, and just didn’t get enough screen time for your liking? *Poof* Time for a spin-off drama.

If you could make a drama spin-off based on secondary characters you loved, what (or who) would you choose?

Let the chatting begin!

(Digression: I’m sure I haven’t watched as many shows as many of you here have, so most of the time, screenshots for Open Thread, WWW, Drama Chat and Caption This are from shows I haven’t touched. It’s interesting to see this post’s header photo, because although I still don’t know which show it’s from, I know it’s @Vienibenmio ‘s profile pic ^^. We need a chat about how beanies choose their profile pic and header photo. I’ve read more than once that some beanies choose not to put up a pic as their profile pic because they have many favourites and a single one cannot represent them!! It’s a serious business :) )

The drama in the picture is a drama within a drama the main drama was Love is for Suckers and the female lead was a co producer for a reality tv dating show and the characters in this post’s header are from that reality tv show. They were a great couple and were much more popular than the main leads by the end of the drama.

Lee Junho and Nam Sang Mi in Chief Kim.

Lee Sung Min and Song Sun Mi in Miss Korea.

Taec and Park Eun Bin in Dream High.

Bae In Hyuk and Kwon Eun Bin in At a Distance the Spring is Green.

Kim Seo Hyung and Ryu Duk Hwan in Nobody Knows.

Kim Young Kwang and Lee Si Young in Lookout.

Etc
Etc
Etc

I rarely get SLS, but I have a lot of beloved couples I need to see more of on screen!

And when I do get SLS:

Bae In Hyuk and Hyeri in My Roommate is a Gumiho. (Hear me out. He comes back after the requisite 3 years in the US, discovers that the Gumiho has outstayed his welcome and is thankfully gone, and his ladylove is free to woo now! Cue new series!)

For single characters that I wished I could see more of:

Honey Lee in Partner.

Jo Jung Suk in What's Up.

Ahn Eun Jin in My Fellow Citizens.

Ha Joon in The Bad Prosecutor.

And last, but not least:
Yoo Seung Ho and Yoo Soo Bin in The Perfect Deal.

😄 Joking aside, my main point of argument about Seo Yul isn't that he is not a secondary character. It's that he is not the villain.

If the drama stars align and create a drama about the adventures of young Cheon Ji Ho (Chuno), I will watch it. If there is a young(er) Dae Gil in the story, even better. But who can fill the shoes of Sung Dong Il and Jang Hyuk?

_ The SML in Lovely Liar (justice for Seo Ji Hoon).

_ Strawberry boy (Kim Young Dae) in Extraordinary You.

_ The secondary couple in Seasons of Blossom.

_ Ji Seung Wan (Lee Yoo Myung) and Baek Yi Hyun (Kang Hoon) in 25-21. She clearly was interested in him when she saw how he had grown up.

_ Han Suk Yool (Byun Yo Han) in Misaeng.

_ Moon Ga Young's character in Live Up to your name (the epilogue was promising).

_ All the secondary couples in The Matchmakers.

_ Lu Di (Zeng Ke Lang) in the c-drama Reset.

And many more, I'm sure.

Yes, I have a fantasy spin off in my head where Tae Song goes around fighting crime /being a police officer with occasional guest appearances from Sun Jae. Tae Song's dad has a repeating guest appearance, where he turns up and is philosophical at the end of every episode.

5

Required fields are marked *

Yes, me too :) I'm envisioning a 10 episode drama of "Tae-songs very good morning", in which he would wake up next to someone else in every episode and solve crimes with the new, bossy CSI-officer.
And maybe In-hyuk and Sun-jaes bathtub should have their own spin off.

1

Required fields are marked *

The bathtub could be a portal to one of the alternate universes. You could have random people showing up, and In-hyuk discovering them during one of his bath raids. Sol and Sun Jae have alternate world memories and are the only people who understand them. They have to deal with whatever problem there is and send them back. An extremely mystified Tae Song helps- he is always thinking something seems familiar, but he can't put his finger on why. (Byeon Woo-seok isn't going to be playing ensemble roles for a while though, so that spin off will die in pre production)

Chef John and Writer Jiwan are definitely getting my votes.

If there's one spin-off I want to see that is romantic, it'll be President Gu Seung-hyo and Peds Dr. Lee No-eul. Even if it is just 2 episodes like Spice Up Our Love, I'll take it like that.

Seo Dong-jae and Young Eun-soo in Stranger season 1. In this world, she didn't die. I didn't watch season 1. I followed via recaps alone and I didn't miss a thing and it was gripping enough. I did watch season 2 plus following via recaps. So I can't exactly visualize how much chemistry Dong-jae and Eun-soo had, but I know how and what they felt for each other quite vividly.

Another is actually a backstory I want to see... Lee Jung-hoon(Kim Dong-wook )and Jung Seo-yeon(Lee Joo-bin). I really want to peek into their love life and see what made it so memorable for the ML.

Can we get alternate reality spin-offs? If yes, I'd like to watch a spin-off where Jang Han-seo(Kwak Dong-yeon) ran Babel as Chairman post-meeting Vincenzo and being enamored by him. Of course, his deadly brother isn't existing in this alternate reality since Vincenzo ensured he had no business with dear mother Earth anymore. Vincenzo also doesn't make a cameo appearance here since his work is done already.

sadly Dong-jae is depicted as married (with child?) in Stranger (!!) whyyy writer whyyy. which is a clear sign that his character was never supposed to be a lead (because leads have to be single of course!) which really makes the Stranger spin-off an anomaly where a married "villain" supporting character somehow makes it to leading a drama of his own.

Frustrated webtoon editor (Kim Seul Gi) in Flower Boy Next Door

Nam Cheong Mi, Pyo Sang Seob and The Gray Witch from It's Always Dark in Hagwon. They all need their own show.

Chang Hee's bestie Hyeon Ah in My Liberation Notes. Maybe with an assistance from Bit Na's from Judge from Hell, because her boyfriend was trash...

Aziz and Ma Tan from Gaus Electronics. Those two were responsible for like half of the hilarious moments in the whole show. Give them their own!!!

Sol B from Law School. And I hope in her spin of we get to see if Sol A and Kim Beom got together or not. Since we never got that season 2. 🙃

The parents (in their dating and newlyweds era) from My Perfect Stranger and Twinkling Watermelon.

The secondary couples from BTIMFLife, High Society, Lovestruck in the City and Roomie Gumiho.

Jeong Je/Ji Hwa/Jae Yo from Beyond Evil.

Lee Rang and his little found family in TOT9Tailed.

Seo Kyeong from Tell Me That You Love Me. Make at least half of the show just about her past with Jin Woo. They were too precious.

The two cool exes from Love Next Door

Song Hae Rin and Wi Ha Joon from Romance is a bonus book. I don't know that there would be much drama or angst happening, you might have to insert a serial killer. Or preferably, have a story that revolves around the dog, with lots of happy dog scenes. I loved the actors so much- Jung Yoo-jin just sparkled on screen. ( I haven't watched her recent DNA lover- it sounded like a bit of a hot mess, sadly)

Lee Jae-kyoon as Park Tae-Seo from Secret Royal Inspector and Joy.
A spin-off where he lives and becomes happy, yes please. He has killed a lot of people, so normally he couldn't be allowed to live, but let's say he saves a lot of people. He risks his life to do it, which is not unlike him at all. And in the end, he gets love ... of some kind. Friends, and the woman he thought was his mother, or whoever has maternal instinct enough to make him feel at home and wanted. And he can have romantic love, too, I'd cherish that moment just before a kiss, but most of all, just any kind of love, peace, and happiness.
Maybe he had actually saved those orphans, secretly. And the "bastard" children. And he stayed alive because he had to return to them and protect them.
What do you say, @sicarius @miso2019 @ladynightshade @kurama ?
I would like to see more of Royal Inspector's servant, Gu-pal, too, who definitely needs romantic love, and it could be the shaman, or it could be someone else, I wouldn't mind.
Apart from that, I have many ideas, but the above is so needed.

***
***
From Matchmakers, I would like to see ML's servant ... it would be a small spin-off, or a series of short stories, rather than a 16 ep. story arc.
There really isn't any of the couples I wouldn't like to hear more about. If about the crownprince, then about their growing and harmonious friendship, and the Crown Princess's just Gals being pals for example with one of the Crown Prince's sisters, while he maybe experienced romantic love with a concubine who had the same age as himself.
***
I would like to see what happened to some of those Joseon women who end up not married, but travelling. That includes FL's in Knight Flower, Matchmakers, Rookie Historian, and Captivating the King.
How are their travels? What skills do they need, apart from "being smart"? Do they meet each other?

Am I the only one wanting two alternative universe situations:
Yumi’s cells its about rectifying a situation where a male lead becomes a second male lead unnecessarily😬: Babi does not go rogue and he and Yumi marry and have gorgeous babies.
King the land: the best friend Daeul leaves her useless husband who steps up to coparent but accepts he is not husband material and that he should stay single as his family take too many liberties. Daeul and secretary Sangsik get together and live happily ever after.

My other wish is for a one off special 25,21 the missing years: they have the Ajumma and Ahjussi reunion to reminisce on all the side couples that occurred on and off screen during their time apart. It will be in flashbacks so we see the original young cast with their energy and the fun elements.

My first thought was Ma-pi in Unlock the Boss, but you know. Maybe a prequel, or Kim Sung-oh's character in Fight My Way, running a martial arts studio or something.

Another idea is the other Princes in Coffee Prince, specifically Kim Dong-wook and Kim Jae-wook's characters. They were hilarious bantering in the Coffee Prince reunion show (again in supporting roles). Maybe have them still serving coffee together twenty years later.

I don't want to relist all the couples from the favorite secondary couples thread, but I would love to see Hwang Bo-ra and Kwon Oh-joong reprise their Arang and the Magistrate characters in The Adventures of Bang-wool and Dol-soe.

Coffee Ghost from Masters Sun actually being a secretary to the dark overlord and he became obsessed with coffee because it keeps vaprating from his cup in Hell so he follows Gong Sil around. But other than that he is actually the one taking the bad ghosts to hell. he has a ghostly surveillance system better than CCTV that can see anything and some other ghostly underlings.

Second. What if all Secretariy Kim´s were from the same agency? Also sole shareholders and secretly super rich, but still working as secretaries. Except, one day at their annual meeting they get abducted by aliens and end up in the space ship, the whole bunch. and on earth, all secretaries get replaced by aliens. I guess my budjet is blown already... this requires every male lead ever... so the aliens are trying to learn Earth ways through the most ease of Access job ever to all human trade secrets and the secretaries Kim are trying to figure out a way to take over the space ship and return to earth. They accidentally start a teleporter and end up in funny places, also there are spaceship sightings but with unexplained cries for help being heard. They try to broadcast SOS but it is automatically stranslated into alien language.
